By crystallographic and X-ray methods, the existence and isonzorphism of Ti3Rh5 and Hf3Rhs were confirmed. Both phases are of the orthorhombic Ge3Rh5 type; lattice parameters and refined positional parameters are given. The structure is related both to the filled-up NiAs-B8 and Cu-AI types. An analogous phase with zirconium does not exist; the effect of ternary substitutions for titanium ad hafnium suggests a size factor limit to be active. A recent survey of phase diagrams of the T4 metals titanium, zirconium, and hafnium with the T, noble metals rhodium and iridium indicated the existence of the A3B5 phases Ti3Rhs, ZrsRhs, and HfsRhs. Ti3Rhs and Hf3Rh5 were found to be isostructural, based on the line-rich powder patterns which had not been analyzed. Zr3Rh5 was considered to have a substructure of the NbRu type (orthorhombically distorted B2-CsCl type).&apos; Because, in combinations with other transition metals, hafnium and zirconium are generally more likely to form isostructural phases than hafnium and titanium (with the significant exception of the Ti2Ni-"E93" type phases based on T4 metals2), the reversal of this relation for the A3B5 phases was of interest. As shown in the following, the nonexistence of Zr3Rhs has been established, the structures of Ti3Rh5 and Hf3Rh5 have been worked out, and crystal chemical relationships and stability criteria are reported. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS AND RESULTS Alloy Preparation and Phase Diagram Work. Alloys were prepared from high-purity (99.99+ pct) elements by arc-meltin3,4.Heat-treated alloys were annealed in a vacuum of 3 x X torr for 24 hr at 1300DC. Metal-lographic samples were etched electrolytically in concentrated HCl with 5 v ac for 5 min.3 X-ray diffraction powder patterns were taken on a GE XRD-5 dif-fractometer with Cum radiation at low scanning rates (0.2 deg per min for 28). It was confirmed that Ti3Rhs and Hf3Rh5 have similar diffraction patterns, and that an alloy with the composition Zr3Rhs has a different pattern. Six Zr-Fh alloys with 59 to 69 at. pct Rh were therefore prepared and investigated in the as-cast state by X-ray diffraction and metallography. Alloys at 59 and 61 at. pct Rh were found to be a single phase, with the distorted B2-CsC1 type structure typical for the off-stoichio- metric region of the phase (Zr,-,Rh,)Rh. This phase forms a eutectic with ZrRhs at about 66 at. pct Rh: accordingly, alloys between 61 and 69 pct at. pct Rh consisted of two phases. There is no evidence for the existence of Zr3Rh5. Based on the results in Rafs. 1 and 5, on the present work on Zr-Rh, and on several additional alloys investigated, the portions between the AB and AB3 stoi-chiometry for Ti-Rh, Zr-Rh, and Hf-Rh are as follows: Further, several ternary alloys near Ti3Rhs and Hf,Rhs were prepared in which it was attempted to replace titanium and hafnium partly by zirconium, niobium, tantalum, and germanium. The results will be discussed in a later section. Structure Determination of Ti3Rh5. Since Ti3Rh5 and Hf3Rh5 are isostructural, the following discussion will largely deal with the former. Although the powder pattern of TisRhs is complex, as found previously,1 it could be indexed by comparison with other structures of A3Bs stoichiometry. Ti3Rh5 was found to be isostructural with Ge3Rh5, whose orthorhombic structure had been elucidated by Geller.9 As both the sizes and atomic numbers of germanium and titanium are comparable, the unit cell volume and the peak intensities could be expected to be similar; however, significant differences exist in the atomic positions, as will be shown. All lines in the powder patterns of Ti3Rh5 and Hf3Rhj could be indexed with primitive orthorhombic unit cells with the lattice constants: The fractional errors are 10 The low-angle portion of the indexed powder pattern of Ti3Rh with sin2 8 < 0.30 is listed in Table I. The extinction laws Okl only with k = 2n and hOl only with h - 2n are compatible with the space group Pbo2 and the more symmetrical space group Phnm of Ge3Rh5. Finally, the positional parameters of Ti3Rh5 and HfsRhs were refined under the assumption that titanium and hafnium occupy the germanium positions in Ge3Rh5. Integrated intensities were obtained from the diffraction patterns by planimetry. Intensities of overlapping reflections were separated by an iteration process incorporated into the least-squares positional refinement program according to a method described previously. The intensities of Ge3Rh5 were used in the first separation cycle, while the atomic parameters of Ge3Rh5 were used as starting values in the first refinement cycle. Absorption due to specimen

FROM the first days on the Norman beaches to the last days on the Elbe the Army Engineers of World War II lived off the countryside for the great bulk of the construction supplies needed for the fulfillment of their ultimate mission-to keep the army moving. To accomplish this end, vast tonnages of rock, timber, and steel were required in the construction of roads, railroads, and bridges. Combat Engineer battalions operated quarries under shell fire as a routine matter. An Engineer forestry company was decimated while cutting bridge timber on the Siegfried line. Oneof the more spectacular feats of the Army Engineers in obtaining construction materials was the operation of the Hadir Steel Works during the fall and winter o f 1944.

AfteR investigating the work of coal-dust fired reverberatories of the Canadian Copper Co., at Copper Cliff, Ontario, the management of the Washoe Reduction Works decided to experiment with and ascertain the advantages of using coal dust as a fuel in their reverberatories. Consequently, during the month of June, 1914, reverberatory furnace No. 8 was changed in order to use powdered coal as a fuel. The results obtained by this method of firing are gratifying and show a decided saving in cost of smelting as compared to grate firing with lump coal. The furnace, as remodeled, is 124 ft. long by 21 ft. wide, and varies in height from 8 ft. 6 in. at the back end to 5 ft. 7 in. at the skimming end. The general construction of the furnace is similar to that of the other furnaces at this plant. There are no side doors to this furnace, as it was thought that with the present arrangement for feeding no "fettling" or "claying" would be required. The interior of the furnace can be inspected through the burner port holes, after shutting off the burners and giving a few seconds&apos; time for the gases inside the furnace to clear away. The charging is done on either side of the furnace from longitudinal hoppers, extending a distance of 74 ft. from the back end of the furnace. Leading from the hoppers into the furnace are 6-in. pipes, spaced 191/4 in. apart, through which the charge is intermittently dropped. The charge is kept well above the slag line at all times; in this way the side walls are protected and no fettling is needed on this portion of the furnace. The remainder of the furnace requires fettling. After operating for three months, we found that the bricks were eaten into along each side wall from the skimming door back to the point where the charge had been dropped. The depth of this cutting away was 8 in. close to the front end and gradually tapered to zero at a distance of 50 ft., and was greatest on the side of the furnace having the larger flue connection. Hoppers will be put in for the entire length of furnace, from which fettling material will be dropped, to prevent this cutting. After the run of three months, the roof was in excellent condition. At the back of the furnace the bricks were not cut into at all; at 30 ft.

FIRST of several sessions at the Annual Meeting devoted to mining methods was a joint program with the Coal Division devoted to the use of Diesels underground. Fred W. Stiefel, in the first paper, stressed the saving in original cost and in operation. Wm. B. Harris then presented the paper of which he was a joint author, and S. H. Ash stressed the poisonous nature of nitrous fumes from Diesel engines even in minute quantity. Determination is difficult but in exhaust gases they are present in amount two to five times that of carbon monoxide. Jay A. Carpenter, in the closing paper of the session, stated that state laws in general prohibit the use of Diesels underground, and that almost all mine inspectors are opposed.

The creep behavior of an aluminum alloy hardened with a finely dispersed phase of aluminum oxide was investigated. The as-extruded alloy shows an approximate steady-state creep in which the creed rate depends exponentially on the applied stress. The activation energy of creeb is abbroximately 150,000 cal per mole. The recrystallized alloy shows no steady-state creep. ONE method of improving the creep resistance of a metal is to introduce a finely dispersed second phase into the metal matrix. The improvement of the creep resistance has been qualitatively explained by assuming that the dispersed second-phase particles act as obstacles to dislocation motion. If the main effect of second-phase particles is simply to hinder dislocation motion then it is possible to derive a high-temperature creep equation for a dispersion-hardened alloy in a straightforward manner. In the Appendix of this paper such an equation is derived from a creep model which works very well for pure metals. Recently, F. V. Lenel has fabricated, for the first time, powder extrusions of aluminum-aluminum oxide in a large-grained recrystallized form. This alloy, designated as MD 2100, consists of a fine dispersion of aluminum oxide plates in a matrix of commercial purity aluminum. A considerable amount of investigation has been carried out concerning the microstructure and physical properties of this alloy.&apos; ) The aluminum oxide is present in the form of flakes 130A units thick and 0.3 u on edge. They are dispersed in the aluminum matrix with an average spacing of approximately 0.5 jx. The spacing varies in the range of 0.05 to 1.5 µ. The alloy structure is extremely stable at high temperatures. For this reason the alloy offers a unique opportunity for a fundamental study of creep of a very finely dispersed two-phase alloy. Lenel supplied specimens in both the unrecrystallized and recrystallized condition. This paper reports high-temperature creep experiments carried out on these specimens. The results obtained were rather unexpected. No steady-state creep was observed in the recrys-tallized material. In fact, after some transient creep which takes place upon loading, the creep rate is essentially zero ( < 10-8per min). If the second-phase particles acted solely as obstacles to the motion of dislocations, measurable steady-state creep would be expected. Since none is observed it appears that the main effect of the fine dispersion in the recrystallized material is to inactivate the dislocation sources themselves, rather than hinder the motion of dislocation loops created at these sources. EXPERIMENTAL DETAILS Specimens were tested in wire form, 0.087 in. in diam for the as-extruded alloy, and 0.035 in. in diam for the recrystallized alloy. These samples were held in friction-type wire grips; a gage length of 2.5 cm was used for all the creep tests. The specimens were held at 600°C in the test apparatus for at least 15 hr prior to each test. The tests were run under the condition of constant loading and, since the creep strains were small, can be considered as constant stress tests. The temperature of testing was held constant within 3°C. Elongations were measured with an optical cathetometer which was capable of measuring strains as smaIl as 0.00012. This allowed the measurement of strain rates as low as l0-8&apos;per rnin. In addition to the creep tests optical micrographs were made in order to determine both the grain size and microstructure of these materials. RESULTS Fig. 1 shows a few typical creep curves obtained from the as-extruded material. The elongations were somewhat erratic, but each curve shows a region of quasi-steady-state creep from which an approximate steady-state creep rate can be obtained. In general the higher the stress at a given temperature, the greater the total elongation before fracture. The lower the applied stress, the longer is the region where the creep rate is almost constant. Summary data from the creep tests of the as-extruded material are listed in Table I. The steady-state creep data of the as-extruded material for a range of stresses at a constant temperature follow a creep equation of the type creep rate = K&apos; = A exp (&) [11 where A and B are constants, k is Boltzmann&apos;s constant, T is the absolute temperature, and a the stress. The standard error of estimate of the data received is less than one order of magnitude. As shown in Fig. 2, if one compensates the creep-rate data for the effect of temperature over the range of test temperature, the steady-state creep data roughly follow a creep equation of the type Temperature compensated creep rate = K* = A exp

On the part of the men I venture to interpret the character of your greeting, not only as a recognition of the position to which you have been good enough to elect me, but also as an expression of your friendly attitude. However, I cannot pass over the tribute of the ladies so casually: Nor does it seem possible to do justice to my sentiments in addressing them collectively. I would feel more equal to the task if I could have the opportunity to talk to them singly, in doing which I know I may count upon their good sportsmanship not to compare notes. There has been some discussion between Mr. Kelly and myself as to our respective duties on this occasion: The precedents are not clear as to whether the retiring or the incoming president is expected to speak at length. Mr. Kelly&apos;s argument was that as the incoming president confines himself to promises for the future his field is a broad one and his opportunities for extending his remarks correspondingly unlimited.

Considering the great advance in the development and application of electricity, it is not strange that eventually a big field for its use has been found in oil-field operations. So far as is known, the first electric drive in oil-field operations was in the Russian field of Baku in 1900. The first application in this country was made by the South Penn Oil Co. near Folsom, West Va. in 1903. In 1916, electric power was first used in the Burma fields of India for drilling and pumping. Between 1916 and 1922, The Empire Gas & Fuel Co. made the first large electrical installation in the Mid-Continent fields. But although the first application was made 27 years ago, it is only within the last 10 years that oil companies have begun to look upon its use with much favor. Within the last few years, there has been a steady increase in the use of electricity in the oil fields. The first application of electricity for oil-field operations in Wyoming was in the Lander field in 1919; the second was in 1924 in Salt Creek; and the third, and last to date, was made by the Continental Oil Co. in the Big Muddy field during 1926. Lander Field The electrification of oil-field operations in Wyoming was initiated by J. W. Steele, superintendent of the Producers & Refiners Oil Corpn., in the Lander field in 1919. At that time, 32 wells were being pumped from five band-wheel powers, with oil engines as the prime movers. Eight barrels of fuel oil were used for power per day and at the price of 90 c. per bbl. the fuel bill was $36 per day. It was decided to try a 15 to 35-hp. oil-field motor on one of these powers. Electric power was generated with steam at the old Wind River refinery station. This test was so successful that in 1920 all five powers were equipped with 15 to 35-hp. oil-field motors, the power being obtained from the Sinks Canyon hydroelectric station. Four of these powers pumped wells at an average depth of 1450 ft., and the fifth pumped wells at an average of 2100 ft. In 1920, the average production per day from the 32 wells was 325 bbl. THE demand for "production control" has, like the poor, been with us always. With the development of the nation, the accumulation of business experience, and a maturing understanding of how our many and varied industries work, it is increasingly evident that an uncontrolled output is a source of great mischief and that order and performance demand a control of production. To see clearly the demand for "production control" we must look in detail at the ways in which industries operate. General pictures, grand aggregates, situations as "wholes," and smoothed curves are likely to be deceptive. An industry may seem to keep the even tenor of its ways, and yet the establishments which made it up may experience a great range of fortunes. A nice bundle of statistics may show in the aggregate a lovely regularity which is not shared by the firms which make up a trade. An industry may appear to be reasonably profitable, and yet the profits may be very unevenly distributed. The people in an industry, and dependent on it, are managers, laborers, stockholders, creatures of flesh and blood, such as you and I. General pictures and abstract statements must not blind us to what is happening to firms, corporations and individuals.

THE large-scale manufacture and use of uranium in conjunction with the atomic energy development during the war led to a need for knowing the equilibrium diagrams of uranium with various other metals. The alloys of uranium with aluminum and with iron were among the first that were studied for this purpose. Much of the work was done in the manner of a survey since it was necessary to determine the important features of the phase diagrams rather than to obtain completely detailed results. For this reason no attempt was made to locate exactly such features as liquidus lines, solid solubility limits and compound and eutectic compositions. It is believed, however, that there are no great inaccuracies in the diagrams reported here and that no important points were overlooked. Earlier work on alloys of uranium with aluminum and iron is almost nonexistent and in each case is considered to have been of little value by M. Hansen. It is interesting to note, however, that the compound UAl3 was first reported in 1902 by L. Guillet. Experimental Procedure Materials: The uranium used for making most of the aluminum alloys was obtained from material prepared by Metal Hydrides, Inc., and melted in vacuum at M.I.T. Because of the lack of an adequate supply of metal, it was necessary to use material from several different batches and hence it is impossible to state an exact analysis. However, a few results indicated about 0.01 to 0.03 pct iron and probably about 0.03 to 0.05 pct carbon. Toward the end of the work a small amount of metal was obtained from Brown University and from Iowa State College and this was used in determining the transformations in pure metal and in some dilute alloys. All of the aluminum used in this investigation came from a supply of high purity metal (greater than 99.9 pct aluminum) which was obtained through the courtesy of Dr. Mehl of the Carnegie Institute of Technology. The uranium used for making the alloys with iron was produced by the bomb reduction process which has been described by J. Chipman.² This metal, after vacuum melting, contained about 99.9 pct uranium by weight with carbon and iron as the chief impurities. Electrolytic iron containing about 0.012 pct carbon, 0.020 pct nickel and 0.009 pct copper was used in making the melts. Melting Equipment: The melting of the alloys went through a stage of development which culminated in the use of beryllia or beryllia-lined crucibles and in the use of high frequency heating in either vacuum or in an atmosphere of argon. It was found that uranium at a few hundred degrees above its melting point would pick up aluminum and to a lesser extent silicon from an alundum thimble while aluminum above 1000°C would extract silicon from the impure alundum. No reaction of either metal with beryllia was noted at temperatures as high as 1800°C. The distillation of aluminum from the aluminum-rich alloys was quite troublesome at temperatures above about 1300°C and was only partially avoided by the use of argon instead of vacuum. From the title of this chapter the reader could expect an attempt to out- line the anticipated shape of things to come, mineralwise. We have no crystal ball and if we possessed one we could claim no expertness in its use. In the first place no one can tell the future status of man. No one has any way of knowing to what extent peace will prevail, nor to what extent changes may occur in national sovereignties or forms of government or in international relationships. So future man is an uncertainty. Nor can we predict new developments that may result in significant changes in man&apos;s status or in the mineral industry or both. If, for example, this chapter had been written in the middle 1930&apos;s, nearly everything that has happened since in the fields of atomic energy and space technology would have been missed. Yet what vast changes these I have made in the status of man! Also the changes in the mineral industry have been important. A writer would have been bold indeed had he prophesied that uranium would play such an important role. But we need not confine our foggy vision to these fields. The steep rise in the use of aluminum, titanium, and germanium reflects the unpredictable in what may be thought of as the more normal pursuits. This should not discourage one from using the past and currently observable trends as bases for limited predictions. To do this, however, it is desirable to make certain assumptions about man&apos;s status without pretense that these assumptions have a high probability of fulfillment: 1. Only minor changes will occur in the geographical boundaries of the nations of the world. 2. World War III will not take place in the near future. 3. As a consequence of (2), man will not destroy himself by wanton use of atomic weapons. 4. Disarmament will take place, if at all, gradually rather than all at one time. Under the above assumptions the world will enjoy a period of relative peace even though the status may be one of an armed truce. The assump-

The term metamorphism as commonly used means any change in a rock in either form or composition, from whatever cause. By metasomatism, according to Lindgren, is meant a metamorphism that involves a change in the chemical composition of a rock by the addition or subtraction of substance. Certain types of metamorphism are due to the action of mineralizing solutions, and are closely connected with ore deposition; they form, therefore, valuable guides in the exploration for ore-deposits. Other types of metamorphism are due to regional processes, and are not connected with ore deposition. By dynamo-regional metamorphism is meant a primary alteration of rocks over large areas under conditions of pressure, flow- age, and heat. This process produces schists and gneisses from either sediments or igneous rocks. It is thought that there is little migration of minerals or of elements in dynamo-regional metamorphism, and that the changes are due chiefly to recrysallization and rearrangement of original minerals in bands with their major axes oriented normal to the direction of greatest pressure. Under these conditions limestones are commonly altered to marble, and sandstones to quartzite, basic igneous rocks to greenstone or serpentine, while rocks of normal or acid com- position commonly yield the usual types of schist or gneiss. Dynamo-regional metamorphism, extending over large areas, has no connection with mineralizing processes, and is, therefore, no guide to ore deposits; while this process has certain features, such as characteristic mineral associations, in common with contact metamorphism, the results of the two processes may usually be distinguished without difficulty.

In the United States, fully 98 per cent. of the anthracite and bituminous coal tonnage obtained from underground operations is mined by the room-and-pillar system. Under this system, the total cost of the coal f. o. b. railroad cars contains as its greatest single item the money paid for "labor." Each labor dollar in an average bituminous mine may be subdivided into 85 c. paid for work done inby the gathering turnouts (including all work at the face), and 15 c. outby that point (including all work in and under the tipple). In an average anthracite mine, the corresponding figures are 70 c. and 30 c., the larger breaker force accounting mainly for the difference between these and the bituminous figures. The next largest single item after "labor" is usually "supplies and power;" and a division of this item inby and outby the gathering turnouts shows somewhat the same relative proportions as has been noted under the case of "labor". During the past 10 years, the chief advances made in the coal industry have been to obtain economies through complete mechanization covering that portion of the work which lies outby the gathering turnouts. These results have been accomplished by applying scientific principles to railroad yard layout, to cleaning and sizing machinery, to dumping facilities, to roller-bearing haulage equipment, and to heavy-rail, well-ballasted trackage. But these improvements, while gratifying in their resulting economies, apply only to 15 to 30 per cent. of the important cost items. Obviously, then, the big problem before the engineers of the coal industry today has to do with the methods of mining and the layout inby the gathering turnouts. Four years ago, Weston Dodson & Co., Inc., determined to have an exhaustive study made of the conditions which must be met in order to gain complete face mechanization, and in order that such a mining layout would be based on correct underlying principles. The result of that study, which was made by the writer, led to the adoption of a method of longwall mining wherein the roof is worked on the caving system and is supported as an overhang along the face by steel jacks.

AN enthusiastic crowd, cheerfully confident that the upturn in the oil industry has arrived, gathered in Los Angeles on Sept. 29 for a Petroleum Division meeting arranged by the Southern California Section. The assembly room of the California Oil and Gas Association was the place of meeting. H. Norton Johnson was in the chair for the morning session, with about eighty members and guests present. Four papers were presented before lunch and a fifth, on electrical coring, was withdrawn as the work on which it was based is still confidential. Joseph Jensen read his contribution on the "Kettleman Hills Middle Dome Unit Plan" and, as he had an active part in framing the plan, his outline and discussion of it was authoritative and informing. J. H. Woods asked concerning the operation of the casing-head gasolene plant under the plan and was informed that one company would operate the plant and royalties would be paid participating companies

LONG before the Stone Age, when man first sought shelter where there-were no natural shelters, such as caves and clefts in the rock, he uprooted trees and planted them upside down so that the roots formed the roof. By selecting trees whose roots grew out in a horizontal direction and; by planting these trees close enough - together, a crude shelter was formed. He then took mud, formed a plaster and covered over the&apos; roots. Later the walls were made by using sticks and twigs and plastering between them. It is natural then, that he wiped his muddy hands on- his own hairy body and soon found that the mud was difficult to remove when, dry. It is due, to this discovery that we mix animal hair in &apos;our modern plaster to increase its strength. The use of fibrous asbestos in some refractory cements has followed this same principle.

INTRODUCTION ACCORDING to the classical theory of elasticity, the elastic portion of the stress-strain curve is represented by a straight line. Such a representation implies that there is a linear relationship between strain and stress and also that strain is a single-valued function of stress and vice versa. Actually, such a one-to-one correspondence between strain and stress does not exist in real metals. A well-known example is the elastic after-effect on unloading. Another familiar example is damping or internal friction, that is, the dissipation of energy attending vibration. In an extensive review of such phenomena, Zener1,2 has proposed the term "anelasticity" to denote that property of a solid in virtue of which strain is not a unique function of stress in the non-plastic region. The phenomena arising from anelasticity are called anelastic effects. The measurements on inelastic effects are, important in many fields of metals technology. Thus, in precise instruments such as watch springs, difficulties often arise from the slight dimensional changes after fabrication. The internal friction or damping capacity of metals is often an important factor in deciding whether they are appropriate for instruments in which there are accompanying vibrations.&apos; However, for metal scientists, the study of anelastic effects furnishes a powerful tool for understanding many properties of metals in terms of their microstructures or atomic interactions. In order to utilize the anelastic measurements to their fullest extent for acquiring such information, the experimental studies of anelasticity must be interpreted by appropriate mathematical analysis. For a great many problems, however, the necessary information often can be obtained by general qualitative arguments. From the definition of anelasticity, any physical changes occurring in a specimen as a result of the applied stress will cause anelastic effects if such physical changes are accompanied by a delayed change of elastic strain. Under these circumstances, we have the condition that strain lags behind the stress. We may mention the stress-induced transportation phenomena as examples. These include the stress-induced thermal diffusion," the stress-induced diffusion of particles,8-12. and the stress-induced viscous slip along the microelements in metals.12-15 The differential equations describing the microscopic mechanism in these phenomena lead to relations in which stress is linear with respect to strain (and/or their derivatives). Thus if we can - demonstrate that the superposition principle is valid under the circumstances in which the anelastic effects are observed, we would expect in. the macroscopic relation a linear relationship between stress and strain and their derivatives. Fresh water or brine drilling fluids may be kept free of suspended drilled solids by the addition of a water soluble acrylamide-carboxylic acid copolymer at the flowline. Addition of from .01 to 0.2 lblbbl of the polymer solution to drilling fluids containing less than 5 per cent clay solids by weight causes the solids to flocculate and settle rapidly to the bottom of the pits. Solutions of the polymer injected at the pump suction reduce the loss of water to permeable formations without impairing the permeability to oil. The use of drill-itlg fluids clarified with the polymer has resulted in increased drilling rates, extended bit life, and lower drilling fluid costs. INTRODUCTION Field experience and the results of a number of investigations have established that the accumulation of solids in drilling fluid reduces drilling rate.&apos;-&apos; Drilling with water makes possible higher drilling rates than can be achieved with mud but in many areas drilling with water may not be feasible because of the possibility of encountering high formation pressures or by-dratable formations. To combat these conditions, the drilling fluid must possess certain physical properties such as viscosity, density, fluid loss, etc., which require the presence of solids. The current trend in drilling fluid treatment is to maintain as low a percentage of solids as is possible without harmfully affecting the mud properties needed for drilling. Mechanical separating devices such as wet cyclones and decanting-type centrifuges are proving to be an economical means of controlling the percentage of solids and thereby maintaining low solids muds. Also: special muds have been developed for the purpose of retarding the hydration of drilled solids so that they may be more easily removed by shale shakers or settling pits. In some areas, such as West Texas, the characteristics of some formations will permit drilling with water. However, because of the dispersion of drilled solids, it is usually not possible to maintain clear water even with the aid of mechanical separators, or by utilizing large settling pits. For this reason the commonly used term "water drilling" is a misnomer since the water usually contains some solids. Because of the improved drilling rates and other benefits which might be effected, a laboratory and field study was made of the use of flocculating agents for maintaining clear water for drilling. PROCEDURE Laboratory—Solids Settling Two techniques were employed to determine the effectiveness of flocculating agents in settling solids from drilling mud. First, the rate of fall of solids was measured in graduated beakers containing mud treated with various flocculating agents. Natural gum, oil-in-water emulsions prepared with ethoxylated nonyl phenols and diesel oil. and a powdered synthetic acrylamide-carboxylic acid copolymer* (hereinafter referred to as "polymer") were tested as flocculating agents in both fresh water and salt saturated muds containing 4 per cent solids. The polymer was not added in the powder form directly to the muds but was first dissolved in water in a concentration of 3.5 lb/bbl. The polymer solution was then added directly to the mud. The concentration of the flocculating agents, including the polymer, was varied. High rates of fall of the solids indicated high flocculating efficiency. A second technique consisted of measuring the time in minutes required to obtain clear water at the pump suction after addition of the various flocculating agents at the flowline. These tests were made using a model mud circulating system having a total volume of approximately 10 gal. The natural fresh water and brine muds used contained 4 per cent solids. This paper records the results of the earth resistivity surveys made in the Godavari River in connection with the Ramapadasagar project. After describing the topographical and geological features of the area, the results of the investigation at the several sites have been mentioned. Further, a detailed account has been given of the resistivity methods adopted, the apparatus used and the interpretation of the curves. The resistivity measurements carried out over the water course have been specially outlined, and a review of the verification of the electrical indications by drilling in a number of cases, has also been presented. Introduction The Government of Madras has under consideration the Ramapadasagar project which is estimated to cost some Rs.660,-000,000 (about two hundred million dollars). The most essential feature of this project is the construction of a high dam across the Godavari near Polavaram for impounding the waters of this great river of South India, whose maximum discharge is 2 million cu secs in flood time. It is estimated that when the proposed reservoir is constructed, about one million tons of rice could be produced annually under irrigation. To those who have had any acquaintance at all with the recent distressing famine conditions which India has passed through and is still undergoing, the Lounteous effects which this project will bring about to the country in the future, are obvious. In the region of the proposed reservoir, the river flows for several miles through a hilly tract, hemmed in between flanks of hard, solid rock; but the river bed is mostly sandy. A few bore holes put down in this sandy bed touched rock at a depth of 180 to 200 ft. The river bed is about jo ft above the mean sea level (m.s.l.) and the bedrock was found at —125 to —160 ft m.s.l. The crest of the dam is proposed at +162 ft m.s.l. The proposed dam mould therefore be about 120 to 130 ft above the river bed, and the foundations would have to reach down nearly zoo ft below the bed at the deepest part. A number of alternative sites were proposed for investigation, and it became necessary to quickly ascertain the bedrock topography at these sites. Dr. M. S. Krishnan,* who was consulted in the matter, furnished a detailed account of the geological features of the region and suggested a geophysical investigation which the writer carried out from February to April 1944, employing solely the electrical resistivity methods. The total length of the survey lines for the electrical measurements amounted to 62,600 ft and the number of resistivity determinations was about 2500. THERE has been very little, if any, uniformity in the reference datum used for magnetometer surveys. It has been the practice to choose a base station at which the magnetic field is assumed to be normal and call the difference in field strength between a given station and this base the anomaly at the given station. For small-scale surveys latitude and longitude corrections may or may not be applied, but for large-scale surveys such corrections usually are applied. The United States Coast and Geodetic Survey maps showing lines of equal magnetic intensity are commonly used to determine the normal latitude and longitude variation by scaling values from the map for given points and computing the change per mile north and the change per mile east. This method has been quite satisfactory for isolated surveys, but when two surveys originating at different base stations were extended until they joined, difficulty arose, not only because of discrepancies between base-station values, but also because of differences between the latitude and longitude correction factors used for the separate surveys. It is the purpose of this paper to describe a reference datum for magnetometer surveys which, it is believed, will eliminate most of the difficulty arising from this source. In order to be satisfactory, a general datum for magnetometer sur-veys should be as close as possible to the observed field and still he based on some assumed distribution of magnet poles, in order that the "normal" value of any component of the field for any given point may be computed to as many significant figures as desired. Such a field has been com-puted, and a comparison of the intensity of its vertical component with the average vertical intensity for the United States as shown by the U.S.C.G.S. map of lines of equal intensity for 1935 is shown in Fig. 1.

The term metamorphism as commonly used means any change in a rock in either form or composition, from whatever cause. By metasomatism, according to Lindgren, is meant a metamorphism that involves a change in the chemical composition of a rock by the addition or subtraction of substance. Certain types of metamorphism are due to the action of mineralizing solutions, and are closely connected with ore deposition; they form, therefore, valuable guides in the exploration for ore- deposits. Other types of metamorphism are due to regional processes, and are not connected with ore deposition. By dynamo-regional metamorphism is meant a primary alteration of rocks over large areas under conditions of pressure, flowage, and heat. This process produces schists and gneisses from either sediments or igneous rocks. It is thought that there is little migration of minerals or of elements in dynamo-regional metamorphism, and that the changes are due chiefly to recrystallization and rearrangement of original minerals in bands with their major axes oriented normal to the direction of greatest pressure. Under these conditions limestones are commonly altered to marble, and sandstones to quartzite, basic igneous rocks to greenstone or serpentine, while rocks of normal or acid com- position commonly yield the usual types of schist or gneiss. Dynamo-regional metamorphism, extending over large areas, has no connection with mineralizing processes, and is, therefore, no guide to ore deposits; while this process has certain features, such as characteristic mineral associations, in common with contact metamorphism, the results of the two processes may usually be distinguished without difficulty.

The purpose of this paper is to present the results of the application of the earth-resistivity method of subsurface investigation to the problem of locating seams of anthracite coal beneath a mantle of soil and subsoil. Details are given of the successful use of this method in locating the outcrops of anthracite seams in actual prospecting. The presence of the outcrop of an anthracite seam is indicated at points where electrical resistivity tests showed relatively low readings. The reason for this is that in some localities the resistivity of anthracite was found to be about 0.0001 megohm-cm. compared to 1 to 200 megohm-cm. for shales and sandstones. For two reasons it is believed that the data summarized in this paper should be of particular interest. In the first place, most of the interpretations of the resistivity survey have been checked by subsequent drilling and some by the removal of the overburden and the exposing of the anthracite seams. It is infrequent that the opportunity for checking results so thoroughly is given. In the second place, the fact that recent commentatorsl,2,3 on the application of geophysical methods to mining have concluded that direct prospecting for anthracite and other types of coal is not promising makes the good results obtained more significant. So far as the authors can learn, the only previous experiment with electrical methods in the Pennsylvania anthracite field was one made by Sherwin F. Kelly in 1921, when he used the self-potential method at Wilkes-Barre4. The profile he made does not show a very marked correlation with the geologic cross section. Kelly points out that stray currents from electric motors in the mines undoubtedly affected &apos;his results, but the experience of the present authors with stray currents from mining machinery suggests the possibility that the potentials measured by Kelly were due almost entirely to this effect.
