Pegmatites occur in abundance in certain areas of South West Africa and in adjacent parts of northern Cape Province in the Union of South Africa. Some of the pegmatite deposits were prospected before World War I, and intermittent mining was done during the period between the two World Wars. The deposits of the Jooste lithium mines became an important source of lepidolite, and beryl, columbite-tantalite, wolframite, and other minerals were produced. Since World War I1 prospecting and mining have been carried on vigorously, with the result that South West Africa produced nearly 3000 tons of beryl during 1949 through 1953, together with more than 40,000 tons of lithium minerals, chiefly lepidolite and petalite. Small amounts of tantalite, columbite, and other minerals have also been produced during the postwar period. Most of this mineral production has come from two pegmatite areas roughly outlined in Fig. 1. One is the Karibib-Omaruru area of north central South West Africa. The second is the northeastern part of the Orange River pegmatite area, which extends into adjacent parts of Namaqualand, in northern Cape Province of the Union of South Africa

Crystallization of ammonium paratungstate (APT) is frequently the last effective purification step in producing high-purity tungsten. However, crystallizer mother liquors are often several times higher in tungsten than predicted by the solubility of APT. The formation of heteropoly anions, particularly those containing phosphorus and silicon, is largely responsible. Solubility of tungsten in APT mother liquor can be linearly correlated with the concentration of these and other impurities. The problem can be overcome by direct treatment of the crystallizer feed solution with aluminum sulfate. By appropriate treatment, the aluminum hydroxide flocculates and is easily filtered, resulting in a purified low-aluminum crystallizer feed from which high APT yields can be attained.

THE mechanism by which age-hardening takes place is still not completely understood. The principal theories range from the extreme of "precipitation-hardening" to that of "order-hardening," with many intermediate gradations. In the hope of obtaining new data on which to base a choice among the many theories, the authors have made electron micrographs of formvar replicas taken from metallic specimens at various stages of age-hardening. The results so obtained on an alloy of 2 per cent beryllium in copper and one of 20 per cent molybdenum in iron will be described in the following pages, as well as the technique used in preparing the replicas. PREPARATION OF FORMVAR REPLICAS OF METALLIC SPECIMENS This section is concerned with the techniques that have proved successful in preparing formvar replicas for studying the microstructure of metals with the electron microscope. Because of its simplicity and accuracy, the formvar replica1 method developed in the General Electric Research Laboratory has been used exclusively, since it is much simpler than the silica replica method of Heidenreich and Peck2 and produces as good results. The formvar method to be described requires a technique acquired only by practice, and no foolproof set of rules can be given. It is a rapid method and a replica can be obtained in less than five minutes under favorable conditions. This does not mean that perfect replicas can be produced every five minutes, but rather that one can well afford to take several strippings* in order to produce a replica of high quality. The metallographic technique required for replica work-very fine polishing and etching with very dilute solutions-is described here. It can be said, in general, that almost any surface that has been carefully prepared for a photomicrograph at 1000 or more diameters can be used to obtain a replica for the electron microscope. PREPARATION OF METALLOGRAPHIC SPECIMENS The preparation of the metallographic specimens is somewhat more exacting than that usually given to samples to be used for inspection under the light microscope. After much experimentation, it was concluded that the best method consists in polishing the metal through to the coarse cloth, then etching and repolishing on final cloth until the layer of distorted metal is removed. INCREASING demand for improved strength-weight ratios made on aircraft structures has resulted in a gradual increase in the tensile strength requirements for steels used in such applications. As the cyclic loads often are more critical than static loads, and the fatigue properties are generally the design criteria, the question arises as to whether an improvement in fatigue properties accompanies the increased tensile strength. The present investigation was undertaken to determine the relationship between fatigue and tensile properties for an aircraft quality steel in the 155 to 280 ksi (1000 psi) tensile strength range, using the Prot method of fatigue testing. Procedure and Results After preliminary work to establish proper heat treating procedures for this heat of aircraft quality electric furnace steel (a Ni-Cr-Mo-V steel," AMS- Prot Fatigue Testing Method—The determination of the endurance limit by the conventional Wohler method can be time-consuming and easily require 20 specimens when statistical variance is to be established. This is also true when endurance limit loads are determined on actual parts or subassem-blies, and the desirability of a reliable accelerated method has been evident for some time. The primary advantage of the Prot method of fatigue testing is in reducing the number of specimens and the time required for each test. Unlike the Wohler method, every Prot specimen tested con- tributes to the determination of the endurance limit, and the authors have been able to duplicate Wohler results obtained with 20 specimens with only half the specimens and a fourth of the total cycles. This new technique for defining the endurance limit was proposed in 1948' by Marcel Prot and consists of progressively increasing cyclic stress until fatigue failure occurs. Attempting to analyze a 25-year forecast after less than a third of the time has elapsed may seem premature. The President's Materials Policy Com- mission's report necessarily painted with a broad brush and made no claim for pinpoint accuracy in its predictions. More importantly for present purposes, it made no attempt to predict the detailed courses of production and consumption during the period forecasted. Several statistical highs and lows may very well lie between now and 1957, so comparing recent figures with points taken from the report on a straight-line basis would be illogical. Moreover, the report assumed that the general trend of consumption-domestic and foreign-would be upward. Contrarily, domestic figures were lower in 1957 than in 1950. Therefore, to project curves from 1950 through 1957 leads to conclusions that are probably false. Many in the industry would feel more uncertain about forecasting 1975 domestic conditions now than they would have been in 1950, even though nearly a third of the 25 years has elapsed. In making comparisons, several statistical problems are encountered. The Paley report figures for 1950 were estimated in several cases and corrected figures vary as much as 10 pct. For example, the report placed 1950 lead consumption at 800,000 tons, whereas actual consumption was 885,000 tons. Obviously, in comparing more recent figures with the report's projections, adjustments must be made for positions taken in error from the start. Over the long pull, such discrepancies will probably be insignificant, but they must be noted in comparing short-term changes.

The latter, although no specific amount may be assigned to it, is an ever-present problem, and is receiving increased attention as the science of mining progresses. Indirectly drill-steel performance affects consumption of compressed air, maintenance of drills and drilling speed. The latter, in turn, increases or retards the tempo of mining and development. These factors, while not all inclusive, are preponderant in their importance. Thus it is evident that in an extensive operation drill-steel expense may run to many thousands of dollars and that thoughtful research leading toward more efficient practice is warranted. Monotonic tension and controlled cyclic-strain tests have been conducted on an annealed steel at various strain rates and temperatures in the weep range. Evidence of a strain-induced precipitate reaction abozle 500°C was determined from pronounced cyclic-hardening effects, increase inflow stress, inter granular fracture, drastic decrease in low-cycle fatigue resistance, and loss in tensile fracture ductility, as well as through electron-microscopy examination. It was found that strain rate as well as temperature had a pronounced effect on these observations. A parameter of the form P = T(7.95 - log ip) was determined, which was directly related to the ductility, defined either as the true strain at fracture in the case of simple tension, or as 2N 1/2 ? E p in the case of cyclic plastic strain. A highly satisfactory comparison of the cyclic life as measured and as computed from the ductility predicted by this parameter was obtained for a range of temperatures from 400° to 650°C and for crosshead speeds of 0.002 to 0.2 in. per min. MANY metals subjected to sustained loading at elevated temperatures derive resistance to creep from solid-state reactions of various alloying constituents. These reactions can be many and varied, and occur as a consequence of time and temperature according to reaction-rate principles. Strong evidence exists that many of these reactions are influenced by plastic strain, the argument being put forth that dislocations act as sites for nucleation and growth for the new phase.' Many examples can be cited where plastic strain during transformation influences the structure, and as a consequence affects the properties.2 The low-alloy steels serve as particularly good examples for investigating the effect which aging reactions have on resulting properties. Alloying elements such as carbon and nitrogen, and carbide formers such as manganese, chromium, molybdenum, and so forth, can, by the particular aging reaction which occurs, produce strengthening effects at various temperatures, and so endow strength to the alloy over a broad range of temperatures. These effects have been systematically studied by Glen both during creep3 and for constant strain-rate tension testing.4,5 The work of Glen is of considerable interest in connection with the present study, particularly in regard to the effect of various alloying additions on the true stress-strain curve and on fracture ductility at various elevated temperatures. He has shown that strain-age hardening occurred during plastic straining, which was quite specific both to the temperature of the test and to the alloying element involved. When strain-age hardening was noted at a particular temperature, a .minimum in reduction of area was also obtained. Provided the temperature for the minimum reduction of area exceeded 300°C, all minimum ductility fractures were found to be inter-crystalline in nature. THE changes that have occurred in metal mining in the past 75 years include almost everything that we know about modern mining. It is true that in odd corners of the world mining is still carried on as it was before that period, but in the United States such instances are rare. Everything has changed to some extent. Even picks and shovels have changed in design and materials. At the beginning of this period steam power had been used for pumping and hoisting for nearly 75 years, but almost every other operation underground was performed by manpower. Although mining was carried on in a small way east of the Appalachian Mountains before the Revolution, and continued thereafter on an increasing scale for more than 100 years, it was not until the discovery of the iron and copper deposits in Michigan and Minnesota and the opening of the mineral areas of the West after the building of the transcontinental railroads that the real development of modern metal mining began. In the same period many problems of deep mining in South Africa were solved by new techniques in shaft sinking and hoisting. Before this time knowledge of mining and skill in its performance were handed down from father to son by the apprentice system, and the son learned to do things in the way his father and grandfather had done them. THE great work of Gorgas in stamping out yellow fever in Panama during the construction of the Canal was one of the chief factors contributing to the ultimate accomplishment of the task, two previous attempts having failed largely through the demoralization of workers by epidemics of contagious diseases. Mining camps, rapidly constructed during the boom days of the rushes to new fields, have been frequent sufferers from typhoid when, as so often used to be the case, little or no attention was given to bacterial examination of the water supply or to the method used for disposing of the sewage.

Some of the broader relations between structure and ore deposition along the London fault, deduced from a thorough study of the geology of the eastern part of the Mosquito Range, should be of general interest to economic geologists. The first part of this paper is a generalized statement of the geology of the region in which the London fault is located; it may be supplemented by reference to several earlier publications by the writers and to the U. S. Geological Survey's Professional Paper 148, on the Leadville district. The second part deals with the structure of both the fault and the disturbed zone adjoining the fault. The third part discusses the salient features of the ore deposits, particularly emphasizing structural control. The two generalized maps are complementary to one another but contain too many data to show on a single small map. The London fault is between Leadville and Alma, and the ore deposits along it are said to lie in the Alma district. Field work in this district, during six summers since 1927, has been a part of the cooperative work of the U. S. Geological Survey, the State of Colorado, and the Colorado Metal Mining Board. The writers have made use of work by R. D. Butler, J. W. Vanderwilt and R. E. Landon. G. F. Loughlin and C. H. Behre, Jr., who have worked on the west side of the range, have contributed valuable suggestions. Mining men of the district have aided in many ways. General Geology Pre-Cambrian Rocks.—The oldest rocks in the district are schists, correlated with the Idaho Springs formation of the Front Range. Quartz-mica schist predominates, but other types occur locally; almost everywhere the rocks show considerable lit-par-lit injection. Intrusive into the schists are two varieties of granite, only one of which is widespread. It is a fine-grained, porphyritie, gray granite correlated with the Silver Plume granite of the Front Range. A method is described for measuring two- and three-phase relative permeabilities in sandstones or sand packs using a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) technique to determine fluid saturations. Two- and three-phase relative permeabilities have been determined on Boise sandstone using the NMR technique of saturation measurement. Three-phase relative permeability to water was found to depend only on the water saturation, whereas three-phase permeability to oil depended on both the water and oil saturations. Relative permeability to gas in three-phase flow was found to depend only on the total liquid saturation. INTRODUCTION Three-phase relative permeabilities are extremely useful in calculating field performance for reservoirs being produced by simultaneous water and gas drives. Three-phase relative permeability data are also needed for analyzing solution gas-drive reservoirs which are partially depleted and are being produced by water drive. Some thermal recovery processes involve three-phase flow which require three-phase relative permeability data for predicting reservoir behavior. Unfortunately, three-phase relative permeability measurements have rarely been made. Also, because of the scarcity of three-phase data, it has not been possible to date to relate other measured rock characteristics to the relative permeabilities with a great certainty. Leverett and Lewis,l Reid2 and Snell3 have reported three-phase relative permeability data on unconsolidated sands. Leverett and Lewis used ring electrodes spaced along the length of the sand sample to measure the resistivity of the sample which was assumed to be monotonically related to brine saturation. Gas saturation was determined from pressure-volume measurements. Oil saturation was obtained by material balance on the cell containing the sand sample. This method is involved and time consuming. Another difficulty arises from the fact that the resistivity of the sand is a function not only of saturation of brine but also of the distribution and saturation history of the brine in the pore spaces. Reid2 used a gamma ray absorption technique for measuring liquid saturation. This method has the disadvantage that total liquid saturation rather than oil or brine saturation is all that can be measured and still another method is required to determine the saturations of individual components. snel13 used a neutron bombardment method which also required a separate determination of the individual component saturations. Caudle et al.4 measured three-phase relative permeability on consolidated sandstones using vacuum distillation for determining fluid saturations. Distillation after each reading makes this technique very lengthy and time consuming. Corey et a1. 5 and Naar and Wygal 6 measured three-phase relative permeability on sandstones by the capillary-pressure method. Semipermeable diaphragm assemblies were used at each end of the core specimen to keep the water phase in the core. Gravimetric methods were used to determine fluid saturations. Sarem7 recently reported an unsteady-state method for measuring three-phase relative permeability on sandstones. This method is an extension of Welge's method8 for measuring two-phase relative permeability. Although Sarem's method is simple and comparatively fast, the assumptions involved may oversimplify the problem. Sarem's assumption, that in all rocks relative permeability to each fluid will depend only on the saturation of that fluid, seems to be rather unrealistic. Neglecting capillary effects at the end of the core is also a weak assumption. Donaldson and dean9 measured three-phase relative permeability using a method similar to Sarem's.

MANAGEMENT and control of any body of workmen can be effected through various - well-known methods ' though many managers hold certain personal theories of control that range from an absolute dictatorship to what might be called the principle of laissez faire, or the "let alone" method. Managements of many mines, factories, smelters and refineries have been compelled in recent years to accept certain restrictions in hours of labor as well as in methods employed, imposed either by federal or state laws, or by labor agreements. Broadly speaking, regulations of the above character were brought on the industry by managers who failed to recognize fully the rights of their employees to proper sanitary, safe, and compensatory working conditions, as well as working hours that were proper and just. As an example of poor management and worse psychology, we have only to hark back to the days when many bituminous coal operators maintained an inadequate number of pit cars for the number of miners or loaders employed, or if the pit cars were available, the haulage facilities

SANDBERG, LONDON, ENG : † I think we should all be grateful to the Pennsylvania Railroad Company, and to their chemist, Dr., Dudley, for spending so much time and money in order to solve an important question ; nor are we less indebted to the public spirit which leads them to impart the experience thus gained. In Europe nothing similar has hitherto been done, either by a company or by any private individual. In England the great railway companies employ their engineers in other ways, and do not keep a chemist or specialist to study rails; but even if they did they would probably not publish the results. The chief professional engineers are so occupied with their private practice of railroad construction generally, that they cannot be expected to devote their time and energies to so special a question. The German Railway Union has, in my opinion, missed the real object of its elaborate researches by falling into the error of specifying costly, impracticable tests for rails-tests at the same time which do not infallibly expose the impurities that may be in the rails under examination. There has, therefore, been nothing done on this side of the Atlantic in the way of exhaustive study to determine the best composition for steel rails. America should consequently have full credit for the enlightened example which she has set. I wish, however, to make a few remarks on Dr. Dudley's second paper, a paper which follows very much upon the same lines of argument as the first read three years ago, upon which I have previously touched in my paper on the same subject read at the meeting in August last. If Dr. Dudley had discovered a new metal he could hardly, I think, have taken more pains to prove that he was correct in his first formula for the best chemical composition of steel rails. But I have seen so much done in the way of proof by experiment that I am inclined to think that almost anything can be proved by experiments and by samples. If Dr. Dudley would only give up his formula, which would not suit any country-not even America- * For the convenience of members it has bees thought best to insert the continuation of this discussion at the Virginia meeting in tide place, rather than to delay its permanent publication until the issue of Volume X, Transactions, where it would properly belong. When ore was discovered on the Tintic Standard property in the spring of 1916, new developments were immediately started both north and south of that property, on the supposition that in East Tintic the ore would be found to occur in northerly trending channels, similar to those so characteristic of the older camp. But 9 years of developments have failed to establish the existence of such a channel. This is due undoubtedly to important differences in the geology of the two camps, that were not recognized, and is indicative of the danger in the general tendency toward interpreting the geology of East Tintic too strictly in terms of that of the older camp. It should not be forgotten that while the two sections have had practically the same geological history, the net results of a long series of geologic processes have developed in them conditions that differ so widely and in so many particulars that the necessity of regarding them as essentially different districts seems apparent. In an effort to emphasize this fact, this paper is devoted chiefly to a comparison of the geological conditions as found in the two camps and is addressed more particularly to those familiar with the geology of the Tintic district. Following a short description of the several ore discoveries and of the Tintic Standard mine is a brief discussion of the evidence of ore channels in East Tintic. For my information regarding the Tintic Standard mine, I am indebted to the courtesy and generous assistance of Messrs. Wade and Snow of the Tintic Standard Mining Co. East Tintic District The Term East Tintic district is here used to represent that eastern part of the Tintic mining district lying between the productive portion of the old camp of Tintic on the west, the foot hills of Goshen Slope, on the east, the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad on the north, and Silver Pass on the south, all in Utah County. As represented by the geological map, Fig. 1, it includes an area about 4 miles wide, east and west, and 5 miles long, north and south, within which the Tintic Standard mine is about centrally located. INTRODUCTION The objective of this chapter is to inform the industry, as well as the public, of the challenges in dealing with the problems associated with the contamination of air and water from coal preparation plants. The need for an informed industry is most important. It is hoped that some contribution may be given to a more efficient and economical approach to the problems of plant waste contaminants at individual plants. The problem has many facets, and consideration to specific area should begin early before any significant problems develop at a given plant. It is then possible to have a reasoned approach before the pressures of an emergency environment force hasty and incomplete solutions. It will be necessary to anticipate these problems in the design of new preparation plants and advance consideration should be given to all the problems concerned with contaminants. The first part of the chapter will concern itself mainly with the contamination aspects of fine-coal cleaning and "black-water" disposal. Also attention will be given to the nature and formation of water from coal-mine drainage systems and the treatment of these waters for industrial use. Some attention will be devoted to the cost of installing and operating the various beneficiation systems for the removal of suspended solids. The second part of the chapter will analyze the problems of air contaminants from coal preparation plants. The nature and the effects of these contaminants and their potential for air pollution will be examined. One of the most critical is the measurement and analysis of these contaminants. As a result of identifying and determining the extent of the problem, better control can be planned. One of the most serious contaminants in air involves the element sulfur, and its elimination as a source of air pollution is one of the most challenging areas in coal preparation today. The last part of the chapter will emphasize the long-range problem of refuse disposal and control. Minimum operating and maintenance costs are functions of the proper selection and geometry of refuse disposal areas. Disposal procedures are varied but must be rigidly pursued or difficulties will result. Maintenance of refuse areas, including monitoring of burning refuse, is critical. It should be recognized that fine-solid refuse disposal systems must be carefully designed to minimize contamination.
