As I drove in from the airport on Sunday somebody said 'On the right you will see Duntroon, which is the military training school of Australia.' So I asked the driver, where did they get that name? 'Oh,' he said, 'from some people who built a house there. That was it's name- Duntroon.' It strikes a note with me because, that's the name of a 12th century castle on the west coast of Scotland where I spend what leisure hours I have and, therefore, it establishes the long connection between Australia and my native land. There is also a story I should tell you about the oil industry and its upsurge in Scotland recently which has resulted in great prosperity. And in Edinburgh, the walls of the banks are bulging-because of the incursion of foreign exchange and other resources. Charlotte Square, as some of you know, is the centre of the Scottish financial world and at one of the corners of Charlotte Square, where ho streets intersect, there are three stores-three emporia on the ground floor. Two of them at opposite corners are banks: The Royal Bank of Scotland, and not to be beaten by that, The Bank of Scotland. But the third building is occupied, or was occupied, by a furniture store over many years-very high-grade, high quality furniture that the elite of the Edinburgh society always supported. And suddenly, the store was cleared out and in came a bunch of carpenters and other people busily engaged in rebuilding the store, and finally the new tenants arrived on the scene.

WHAT does management expect of W and from an engineer? First and foremost, it expects that he should become, and therefore should fit himself in every way to be, a part of management so that he may assume as much and as many of the responsibilities of management as his ability and the opportunities of the job permit. Let me make clear at the start that the profession of pure, technical engineering offers but limited opportunities at the top levels because of the inherent organization of engineering work. The line of succession to top jobs may be likened to a cone with a broad base and an extremely sharp point. Consider any oil company, large or small, or any operating function of that company, and you will find few top engineering jobs in the organization. This is true by the nature of the work handled. There will be a few district engineers depending on the spread of operations, a chief petroleum and production engineer, perhaps a few research engineers, possibly some technical executive assistants, and that is usually all. The road to these jobs is a long one and the competition is tough. The larger the organization the greater the opportunity, but always the ratio of engineers to top engineering jobs is only a small one.

RENEWABLE VS. NONRENEWABLE NATURAL RESOURCES Nonrenewable resources, such as minerals, are the inevitable center of attention in discussions of depletion and exhaustion. Nevertheless, it may well be proper to regard some nonrenewable resources as not subject to exhaustion, and renewable resources may sometimes be treated as if they were finite stocks. Thus, the availability of nonrenewable resources is not and probably never will be known completely Chap. 2.5A, and therefore is not subject to firm predictions concerning exhaustibility. Moreover, because exploration and discovery are more or less continuous processes it is often appropriate to regard mineral supplies as flows, and to treat the estimated reserves as working capital, an inventory, continually depleted by use and augmented by discoveries.23 The aggregate economically exploitable stocks of a given mineral are seldom estimated (or estimatable) with precision, as Chap. 2.5A shows, and even when they are, forecasts concerning years of remaining life can be and often are falsified by changes in one or more of the multidimensional conditions of supply and demand; or the productive services formerly derived from an exhausted stock may continue to provided without material impairment by one or more substitutes b Conversely, the renewable resources are all subject to depletion when the rate of use exceeds the natural or induced rate of replenishment, and cases of exhaustion or near exhaustion, as through soil erosion, overcuttmg of forest lands, and overfishing, are rather common c Where exhaustion is a clear possibility the resource may either be exploited on a consciously adopted "sustainable yield" basis or be treated as an exhausting asset." The general term "tar sand" refers to sand that contains varying amounts of dense, viscous petroleum. Tar sand deposits have been found throughout the world, often in the same geographical area as conventional petroleum. The largest one by far is known as the Athabasca Tar Sands, in the province of Alberta, Canada. Actually a group of three deposits, these particular sands underlie an aggregate area of more than 12,000 sq miles. Current estimates place the contained raw petroleum at about 700 billion bbl; and via currently available technology, the amount of recoverable synthetic oil may be as much as 300 billion bbl-which is roughly equivalent to five times the combined US and Canadian total crude oil reserves. With the ever-widening gap between energy supply and demand, mining and petroleum companies are now evaluating all possible energy resources-both developed and underdeveloped-and, certainly, the Athabasca Tar Sand deposit is one of the more important ones to merit such attention. The first section in ME deals with the geology and historical developments; the other four sections, with mining methods, extraction technology, economics, and outlook.

The most important area of the so-called Keewatin rocks of northern Minnesota is that which runs westerly from Lake Saganaga, near the national boundary, and finally disappears beneath the drift (or has not been farther traced), in the neighborhood of Vermilion Lake. With this belt we have a general acquaintance, extending back some four years. During the past year we have had the opportunity of studying in considerable detail a small part of it, embracing an area of about 12 square miles on the south and east shores of Vermilion Lake. In this paper we desire to record our observations and conclusions, which seem to us important. II.—Literature. Outside the Minnesota Geological Survey, the list of the investigators who have studied the geology of the Vermilion Lake area is not long. Whittlesey, in 1876,* mentioned the occurrence, in the area about Vermilion Lake, of rocks resembling the Canadian Laurentian. Chester,? in 1884, described the iron-ore at Vermilion Lake as occurring in connection with jasper and quartzite, intimately bedded with the country-rock, chiefly sericite schist, and standing in a nearly vertical attitude. The Vermilion iron-bearing rocks, and those of the Mesabi range, he says, are of the same age.

ALASKA'S coal consumption is now about 130,000 tons annually. About one-quarter of this amount is used in the southeastern part of the territory and in settlements on the western coast and comes from Seattle and from British Columbia mines. About 60,000 tons is sub-bituminous coal from the Healy River mine in central Alaska, and is used mainly at Fairbanks, sixty miles to the north, for heating and the development of electric energy, for the city and the gold-dredging operations of the Fairbanks Exploration Co. The remaining 40,000 or 50,000 tons is bituminous coal from Matanuska Valley, in the south-central part of the territory. These coal deposits extend intermittently for about forty miles along the valley, which trends eastward from the upper end of Cook Inlet.

NONFERROUS alloys upon which desirable properties can be conferred by heat treatment are becoming of increasing industrial importance. The alloys of copper with a constituent which has a solubility varying with temperature are materials of this character. Some of the constituents which are effective in producing a change in the mechanical properties of these alloys upon heat treatment are, according to Corson,1 nickel and silicon, iron and silicon, cobalt and silicon, and chromium and silicon. In addition to these elements, Gregg2 states that the combination of beryllium and silicon is effective in producing age-hardening characteristics in copper. The effect of these elements, however, as dispersion-hardening constituents in the copper alpha solid solutions does not seem to have been studied in any considerable detail. This paper deals with the heat treatment and properties of three alpha brasses containing 3 per cent. of nickel plus silicon in the proportion necessary to form the compound nickel silicide, Ni2Si. Some information of a preliminary nature in regard to the hardening by heat treatment of phosphor bronze containing the same percentages of nickel and silicon is included. The method of hardening the alloys, which is effective in increasing the tensile strength and proportional limit, is similar to that used in, the case of duralumin type aluminum alloys. It consists of a quench from a temperature at which the hardening constituent is in solid solution, followed by an aging at a lower temperature to precipitate the dissolved constituent in a dispersed condition. This results in an increased resistance of the alloy to deformation with an attendant improvement in the tensile properties.

In metallurgical process industries a knowledge of true melting and casting temperatures is very essential for increasing the operating efficiency as well as improving the quality of the finished product. Optical pyrometers are widely used for the purpose because of their cheapness and ease of operation. It is an unfortunate fact, however, that this mode of measuring temperature entails a source of severe error inasmuch as with all non-black bodies, the temperature observed is always below the true temperature owing to deficient emissive power. Hence, the need for emissivity correction arises. In 1913 Bidwell1 obtained emissivity values of 0.36-0.48 for a temperature range of 1520-1800°C. He measured the true temperature of molten iron by sighting into a carbon cavity immersed in the iron under an atmosphere of hydrogen. In 1914 Burgess2 determined the emissivity of a smooth surface of liquid iron free from oxide to be 0.37 under an atmosphere of hydrogen. He claimed to have attained an accuracy of within 5°C at 1500°C with an optical pyrometer using monochromatic light. He reported that no difference appeared to exist between the emissivities of pure iron and of steels containing considerable percentages of carbon, nickel or manganese; nor was there any appreciable variation of emissivity with temperature from 1530 to 1571°C. Wensel and Roeser3 found an elnissivity value of 0.4 for temperatures above 1375°C for cast iron. The average emissivity value for carbon steels reported by Leiber,4 odd,5 Hase6 and Umino7 range from 0.4 to 0.45. Knowles and Sarjant8 made an extensive study of emissivity of molten iron and steel over a wide range of workshop and laboratory conditions. Observations of true temperature were made with immersion thermocouples, and correlated with apparent temperatures indicated by optical pyrorneter readings taken on the pouring stream as it passed over the lip of the crucible. The emissivity of Armco iron was shown to be of the order of 0.4, rising slightly with increasing temperature. But for plain carbon steels containing up to 1.0 pct carbon the emissivity was shown to fall slightly with increasing temperatures. The results of their investigation are in agreement with those of Guthmann.9 Naeser,10 Spencer," Todd5 and Hase6 in regard to the relation between emissivity and temperature for plain carbon steels. However, Goller12 has found a rise of emissivity with increasing temperature for the same steels. Results of several investigations are given in Fig 1. Measurement of True and Apparent Temperatures The necessity for an accurate optical temperature scale for liquid iron in studies of gas-metal equilibria led to this investigation. Experimental measurements were carried out in the induction furnace used by Dastur and Chipman13 in their studies of the reaction of hydrogen with oxygen in liquid iron. The furnace as modified for this work is shown in Fig 2. The atmosphere of the furnace was a mixture of purified argon with hydrogen containing a small controlled amount of water vapor. GENERAL. THE Tooele plant of the International Smelting & Refining Co. is situated at the mouth of Pine canyon, Tooele county, Utah. It is connected with the main line of the San Pedro, Los Angeles & Salt Lake railroad by the Tooele Valley railway, and is about 7 miles from Tooele Junction. Fig. 1 is a general view of the plant. The location of the plant was selected on sloping ground with the idea of using gravity to the fullest extent and thus keeping labor at a minimum. THE etched microstructures of cold-worked alpha brasses, after reduc-tions in excess of about 20 per cent, exhibit dark lines or markings, which have been termed "deformation bands," "etch bands," and "strain markings." The terms will be used synonomously in this report. The markings are similar in their general appearance to etch figures found in cold-worked iron, aluminum and other cubic metals but in certain respects may differ noticeably. At reductions of from about 20 to 50 per cent in brass, they appear as straight dark lines of irregular spacing and at random directions in different grains, but apparently intimately associated with definite crystallographic planes, usually {111}, in each crystal. At higher reductions, the markings on the rolling plane tend to appear in a direction transverse to the rolling direction in all crystals but may bend away at considerable angles, particularly near grain boundaries. Samans,1 on the basis of X-ray and micrographic studies of two single crystals of brass, rolled to a 50 per cent reduction, showed that the lines of deformation were the edges of thin mechanical twins parallel to octahedral planes. Barrett and Levenson2-4 have made comprehensive studies of the deformation of iron and of aluminum. They show that in these two metals the deformation markings originate by division of the original homogeneous crystal into banded areas differing in orientation by an amount that increases with the degree of deformation. The markings thus cannot be twin bands, and Barrett, in a review of this subject,2 attributed Samans' results on brass to an accidental choice of deformation that left the bands in approximately a twinned relationship. On the other hand, Mathewson5 has suggested that in some cases mechanical twinning offers a better rationalization of the coverage of some (111) pole figures of worked brass than the assumption of band rotation into sym-metry positions. Considering next a deformed and annealed alpha brass, the most striking aspect of its microstructure is the multiplicity of twin bands.

A thoroughly modern coal-handling system has been installed at the Pittsburgh Terminal H. H. &. Coal Co.'s new No. 8 shaft, or Cover-dale mine, about 11 mi. (17.7 km.) from Pittsburgh on a spur of the Montour R. R. The Pittsburgh scam, which is the one worked, is reached at a depth of 342 ft. (104 m.). Power is delivered to the mine at 22,000 volts over a transmission line of the bow-arrow type of construction. A private telephone line connecting the various mines and the main office in Pittsburgh is carried on the same poles. The high-tension line is brought to an outdoor, step-down, transformer substation, where three 833-kv.-a., single-phase, 60-cycle, oil-insulated, self-cooled transformers reduce the potential to 2300 volts. The transformers are protected by electrolytic, aluminum-cell lightning arresters, horn gaps, and choke coils. High and low-tension busses, together with fuses, choke coils and air-break horn-gap switches with thcir remote-control operating mechanism are mounted on a substantial structural-steel tower 25 ft. (7.6 m.) in height. Mine Substation The transformer substation is adjacent to a. pressed-brick building that houses direct-current substation equipment together with switchboards, etc., for the control and distribution of power. This building also contains the hoist for the men and supplies. Main Switchboard The 2300-volt circuit is carried underground in a conduit from the transformer substation to an oil switch in the substation and supply hoist building. This is the main switch controlling the 2300-volt busbars mounted back to a twelve-panel black-slate switchboard. From the switchboard, 2300-volt circuits are carried to transformers feeding the street and house lighting systems and to other transformers furnishing power for the elevator and lighting circuits in the store building. MORE has been said about the iron and steel situation on the Pacific Coast than has been done .about it; but perhaps as much has been done as conditions have warranted. The production of finished steel in an amount sufficient to take care of the local demand for certain sizes and shapes is an established industry on the .coast. The amount .and the variety of products, so made, changes with the demand or them which is largely dependent upon the growth in population. An increasing demand will not always increase the quantity of steel produced locally because the cost of production may rise so -high as to let in steel from the outside. The reason for this is that all of the steel made in the West comes from steel scrap, the supply of which is .limited. From the standpoint of the metallurgist, it would. be desirable to subititute pig iron for some of ' the steel scrap, but this cannot be done profitably because the pig iron now available is too expensive. In other words, the large future demand for steel and pig iron on the Pacific Coast must be supplied by reduction of ores in the West, unless we are to be content with paying high transportation costs for material produced elsewhere. ."

A STUDY of the various ores that have been discussed impresses one with the need of beneficiation, in many cases. This applies to the ores that have lain dormant, due to necessity for further preparation, or to ores that now find a market due to a changed condition. Processes of beneficiation will come into their own as our richer ores become exhausted. Many efforts at improvement have been commercial failures, due to prematurity. Thomas A. Edison, with characteristic foresight, attempted concentration of the low- grade New Jersey magnetites some thirty years ago. Due to high costs and the discovery of the Mesabi range, his efforts were futile. However, a successful crusher, designed by Mr. Edison, resulted from this attempt. Agglomeration of concentrates had not, at that time, been brought to its present efficiency, when sinters and briquettes of excellent physical condition are obtainable. Recent efforts in the beneficiation of the lean magnetites of the East Mesabi resulted in an excellent sinter, but that operation is also ahead of its time.

During the past several years Climax Molybdenum Co. has been engaged in testing various types and sizes of hollow drill steel. The majority of tests have been on 7/8-in. hexagon st.ee1, inasmuch as it represents approximately 70% of total drill steel consumption at the Climax operation. Prior to December 1960, tests on 7/8-in. hexagon drill steel were conducted on steel with a forged collar and, in most cases, with a threaded bit connection. Through these tests and research, some improvement in steel life was achieved by making changes in heat treatment, design and alloying constituents. However, during that month, research and testing commenced on a rubber collar which was designed to replace the forged collar on 7/8-in. hexagon drill steel. Manufactured by the LeRoi Div. of Westinghouse Air Brake Co.. the collar. is very simple in design, consisting of a 1 ½ -in. diam steel cylindrical sleeve 2 in. long, containing a bonded rubber insert and attached to the steel with an epoxy cement

The classical explanation for formation of the fine equiaxed "chill zone " in ingot solidification is that local supercooling near the chill wall causes copious nucleation in this region. This work indicates, however, that convection is an essential element in formation of the chill zone. In the absence of convection, no chill zone forms even though rate of. heat extraction is extremely vapid. Alloy studied was Al-l.5 pct Cu alloy solidified against a copper chill wall. When solidification was initiated at the chill wall in absence of. cor-vection, surface grain size was large (>I cm diam). When it was initiated in the presence of convection, it was fine (<0.05 cm diam). It is concluded that some form of "crystal multiplication" plays an important role in formation of the chill zone. INGOT macrostructures are generally classed as containing one or more of the three zones: "chill zone", "columnar zone", and central "equiaxed zone". These three zones are sketched in Fig. 1; their origin has been discussed in some detail.&apos;-&apos; The classical explanation for formation of the chill zone is that supercooling occurs in the region of liquid metal adjacent the mold wall, and copious nu-cleation then takes place in this region forming numerous small crystals. The columnar region then results by growth of favorably oriented grains (den-drites) which crowd out their less favorably oriented neighbors."5 The mechanism of the columnar-equiaxed transition has been the subject of considerable interest. The generally accepted mechanism, until recently, was that constitutional supercooling developed in front of the growing columnar grains with eventual nucleation of new, equiaxed, grains ahead of the growing solid front.&apos; Recently, it became evident this explanation was not completely satisfactory and it is now evident that "crystal multiplication" plays an important role. This crystal multiplication occurs by separation of dendrite arms from growing dendrites,8?"&apos; and has been shown to be strongly influenced by convection.6, 10-13 Reduced convection results, for a given alloy, in longer columnar zone, larger columnar grains, and larger equiaxed grains.7, 12

THE high copper price during the war stimulated the capacity to produce far beyond a possible normal consumption. The curves in Fig. 1 show this. The line YZ indicates, what the world production and consumption of primary copper nor-mally would have been, had not the 3 war upset the rhythm of industry. Granting that the maximum world production of 3,150,000,000 lb. in 1917 was obtained by crowding both the equipment and the grade of ore mined, yet in many instances addi-tional capital was invested, upon which the producer will be driven to earn at least a reasonable interest. During the period of deflation, or C liquidation, which we have entered, the consumption of copper will nat-urally be below the normal. Fig. 1 shows the actual consumption ex-pressed-in per cent. of normal : 1919, 96 per cent.; 1920, 94 per cent.; 1921, 70 per cent. The copper industry, consequently, faces: (1) Potential over-production capacity; I (2) Diminished consumption. To deny the existence of these factors would be illogical. To minimize the menace of this potential producing capacity might lead to regret. All past attempts at artificial control have not proved very successful. Obviously the remedy is to increase, if possible, the consumption of copper to a point where these factors cease to be dangerous. In ultimate analysis, this means: Produce an article so cheap and so good that no one can afford to use substitutes. The problem can be solved by: (1) Re-ducing price; (2) Improving product offered.

MORE than 70 igneous pipes and dikes are known to occur in Cambrian sediments throughout an approximately circular area of about 75 sq miles in southwestern Ste. Genevieve County and southeastern St. Francois County, Mo., across the southern portion of the Farmington anticline, which is outlined in fig. 1. From evidence obtained from fossil fragments taken from some of the intrusive, and from the similarity in composition of the more basic intrusives to those of known age in surrounding states, these pipes and dikes are believed to be at least post-Devonian and probably Cretaceous in age. As first postulated by Rust, these intrusives are believed to represent explosion tubes, or diatremes, punched through great thicknesses of solid rock by gaseous pressure. The particular intrusive studied is located about 1 mile north of the small town of Avon at an elevation of 880 ft in the EM SES NE% of sec. 2, T. 35N, R. 7E. Outcrop is through the Bonneterre dolomite in two separated exposures. The larger outcrop extends east and west for about 50 ft along a tributary in a small ravine (fig. 2). The smaller exposure occurs as a few scattered patches over an area 20 ft square about 100 ft to the north. The area between the exposures is covered, but scattered patches of the Bonneterre dolomite outcrop throughout the area surrounding the diatreme. Where exposed, contact relations show the surrounding dolomite to be shattered and metamor- phosed to a fine-grained rock for a distance of 15 to 20 ft from the intrusive. The igneous rock occurs as a dark greenish-gray porphyry near the center of the diatreme and as a fine-grained, greenish-gray material containing lapilli and metamorphosed fragments of dolomite near the contact with the country rock. The most abundant original mineral of the porphyritic rock is olivine now largely serpentinized as the result of extensive hydrothermal alteration at time of emplacement. The most common constituent of the fine-grained rock, which occurs near the border of the intrusive, is calcite. Mica is a common constituent of both types of rock, occurring as tufts or

The effect of transition element binary solid-solution additions upon the recrystallization temperature of vanadium has been investigated. Cr, Fe, Co, Ni, Mo, Ru, Rh, Os, and IY lower the recrystallization temperature, while Ti, Mn, Zr, Cb, Pd, Hf, Ta, W, Re, and Pt raise it. The majority of elements have their greatest effect in less than 0.15 at. pet. Both the rate of change of recrystallization temperature with atomic percent solute and the limit of initial linearity are found to Correlate with the free atom grozdnd state outer electron configuration of the sollte element. THE work of Abrahamson and Grant1 and Abraham-son and Blakeney2 has shown that the solute&apos;s elec- tron configuration appears to be a prime determinant of both brittle-to-ductile transition and recrystallization temperature in dilute binary alloys. It has also been shown by Abrahamson3 that the limit of linearity, i.e., the limit of initial linear change of recrystallization temperature with atomic percent solute, is also a function of the electron configuration of the solute in iron base alloys. Because of the systematic nature of the solute electron configuration correlation, it is to be expected that some systematic variation might be observed upon changing the solvent. Thus, this study of recrystallization in vanadium base alloys is the first of a series aimed at defining the role played by the electron configuration of solute in determining the recrystallization characteristics of dilute transitional alloys.
