During the last three or four years I have had occasion to examine, chemically, various samples of matter commonly called flue-dust or cinder, found deposited in the flues and hot-blast chambers and under the boilers of blast furnaces, and also in the flues and under the boilers of puddling and boiling furnaces. Recently several of these examinations mere made quite in detail, and as the results reveal, I believe, information of no inconsiderable importance, I am induced to communicate them to this Institute. A sample of deposit obtained from the flues of one of the blast furnaces at the works of the Phœix Iron Company, at Phœnixville, Pa., was found to have the composition given in Column I of the following table: I. 11. 111. ClameR,* Philadelphia, Pa.—Unfortunately, prior to the war no serious attention was given to the conservation of tin, notwithstanding that this country is practically dependent upon outside sources for its entire tin supply. Tin is of vital importance in many industries, but it is surprising how many and how excellent are its substitutes when we become acquainted with them. Tin has always been a relatively high-priced metal, and it is part of the human attitude to associate high prices with high standards; it is not until the price of a commodity becomes well-nigh prohibitive that we hunt for substitutes, because the idea of substitution seems always to involve an assumption that the substitute must necessarily be inferior. The history of the development of bearing bronzes is a striking example of this policy. In the early days, copper-tin alloys were almost universally used, the idea then being prevalent, which is still held by many, that a bearing to resist wear must be hard, and the harder the better. The favorite bronze bearing contained 90 per cent. copper and 10 per cent. tin; frequently, in service which was considered severe, even higher proportions of tin were used. ON May 5, the Washington, D. C., Section, A.I.M.E., devoted its meeting to the many-sided and perplexing question of mineral stock-piling for peace. Opening the symposium, Harry J. Wolf, of the War Production Board, outlined the problem under six heads: (1) Technical. Mechanical, chemical, or metallurgical importance of specified materials, emergencies that might arise, relative scarcity, and critical value of stock piles during emergencies. (2) Economic. Cost to Government, influence of Government stocks on commercial relationships and markets, effect of availability of items as a con¬structive influence on industry, Administration policies now and during postwar period. (3) Legislative. Need for immediate legislative action, need for legislation on postwar conditions as well as on current requirements, a constructive basic policy to prevent political manipulation. (4) Military. Consideration of re¬quirements and supplies bearing on national safety and needed for manufacture of equipment, and adequate reserves of scarce materials for research or experimentation by military agencies. (5) International. Interests of the United Nations in contradistinction to those of the United States; effects of nonisolation policy on nature, location, and administration of stock piles. (6) Negative stock-piling. Question of United Nations' legislation to prevent stock-piling by Axis nations after the war and who shall purchase stock-pile materials and during what periods.

This paper presents a preliminary analysis of the fundamental relationship between the net energy used and the respective product size throughout the entire range of sizes covered by crushing and grinding, and an attempt to find a sensible correlation between the existing theories. Walker, Lewis, McAdams, and Gilliland' have given the following differential equation of a general form for comminution: dE = -C§ [1] where E is the net energy required per unit weight in a certain process of comminution; x is the factor indicating the fineness of the product; n is the exponent indicating the order of the process, and C is a constant related with the material, units chosen, etc. H exponent n in the above equation is replaced by numerical figures 2, 1, and 1 1/2, the integrated form of the general equation leads to the well known fundamental theories represented by the law of von Rittinger,' law of Kick, and the third theory of comminution by Bond, respectively. The total net energies (E) from infinite feed size to a product of size x are as follows: The net energy required in a certain process of comminution is proportional to the new surface developed according to the law of von Rittinger, to the weight or size of the bodies treated according to the law of Kick, and to the length of the new cracks formed which initiate breakage according to the theory and explanation by Bond. On a logarithmic paper, where particle size is presented on the abscissa and energy consumption on the ordinate (see Fig. 21, all three relationships are represented by straight lines. The slope m of the line according to the law of von Rittinger is equal to -1.0; of Kick, 0; and of Bond, -0.5. Experimental evidence in favor of the law of Rittinger has been presented, e.g., by Gross and zimmerley5 on quartz crushed in a drop weight crusher and evaluated for surface by the method of dissolution, by Dean on magnetite crushed by a similar method and evaluated for surface by the determination of coersive force, by piret7 and co-workers on a group of minerals crushed again by a similar method as well as by compression and evaluated for surface by permeability and gas adsorption methods, and by schellinger8 on a group of minerals ground in a calorimetric ball mill and evaluated for surface by gas adsorption. Experimental evidence in favor of the law of Kick seems to be scant in the field of comminution. On the other hand, in the field of mechanical engineering Kick's law seems to be of fundamental nature in processes such as cutting, pressing, shaping, and rolling of metallic substances. Experimental evidence in favor of the third theory has been provided by Bond." To a large extent, data are based on the vast amount of grindability tests performed in the laboratories of Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Co. In addition to the devoted proponents of one or the other of the basic theories listed above, certain investigators have indicated that one of the theories might be applied for a certain range of sizes, while another theory might be used for other sizes. In a discussion of a paper by Bond," Dobie" presented a statement at the International Mineral Dressing Congress in London (1952) indicating that 1) for large particles, the law of Kick was approximately correct; 2) for finer particles, von Rittinger's suggestion was nearer to the truth; and 3) Bond's new

SO many variations of lead-zinc ores occur in nature that it is impossible to state any rules that will apply to the concentration of ores of this type. Some have lead and zinc in approximately equal amounts; others may have pre- dominant amounts of one or the other metal. There are gradations from all sulfide to completely oxidized minerals. Some such ores carry little pyrite, others contain much more pyrite than they do lead and zinc combined. The behavior of ores in flotation is largely a function of their lead-zinc ratios. their content of pyrite or pyrhotite, the nature of existing soluble salt conditions, the character of the gangue constituents: and the speed with which the minerals float. For the purposes of this paper only those lead-zinc ores handled commonly in present-day flotation practice will be considered. These are practically all-sulfide ores with relatively minor degrees of sulphatization or oxidation.

CONSIDERABLE deep hole prospect drilling has been done in the last few years in the Globe-Miami mining district about 70 miles east of Phoenix, Arizona, and in the San Manuel-Tiger area about 50 miles south of the Globe-Miami region. More than 205,000 ft of churn drilling have been completed by the San Manuel Copper Corp. at their property in the Old Hat Mining District in southern Pinal County. The deepest hole on this property is 2850 ft; there are 49 holes deeper than 2000 ft. At the adjoining Houghton property of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., where only one hole reached 2000-ft depth, there were 27,472 ft of churn drilling and 3436 ft of diamond drilling. Three churn drill holes were deepened by diamond drilling methods. Near Miami in the Globe-Miami district the Amico Mining Corp. drilled four holes by combined churn and rotary drilling methods, the total amounting to 13,879 ft, of which 2256 ft were drilled with a portable rotary rig. In the same district, besides doing a large amount of shallow prospect drilling, the Miami Copper Co. drilled two holes of 2560 and 3787 ft, respectively, which were completed by churn drilling methods. The rocks encountered in drilling at San Manuel and Tiger are described by Steele and Rubly in their paper on the San Manuel Prospect' and by Chapman in a report on the San Manuel Copper Deposit? The rocks are well-consolidated Gila conglomerate, quartz , monzonite, and monzonite porphyry. In some places these formations stand very well while being drilled, and three holes were drilled without casing, the deepest of which was 2200 ft. In other holes faulted and fractured ground made drilling difficult. In the Globe-Miami district the deep drilling was done in the down-faulted block of Gila conglomerate east of the Miami fault and in the underlying Pinal schist. The geology of this area is described by Ransome.3 In the Amico holes the conglomerate varied from material consisting entirely of granite boulders and fragments to a rock made up of schist fragments in a sandy matrix; in the Miami Copper Co. holes there were more granite boulders and the material was poorly consolidated. Drilling was much more difficult and expensive in the Miami area than in the San Manuel district, mainly because of the depth of the holes and the formations drilled. All the deep hole prospecting described in this paper was done with portable rigs. The churn drill rigs were of several types, of which the Bucyrus-Erie were the most popular. Bucyrus-Erie 28L, 29W, and 36L rigs were used on some of the deeper holes on the San Manuel property. A few Fort Worth spudder types were tried, and the deepest hole at San Manuel was drilled with a Fort Worth Jumbo H. The spudder type is considerably larger than most other rigs used on this work and required a larger location site. The spudders were belt-driven machines with separate power units, and time required for setting up and moving was much longer than with the more portable drills. All the churn drilling was done by contractors or with machinery leased from them. A few of the contractors had complete equipment, including most of the necessary fishing tools. Unusual and special, fishing tools were obtainable from the supply companies in the oil fields of New Mexico or in the Los Angeles area. Most of the contractors used equipment with standard API tool joints, so that much of it was interchangeable. Failure of tool joints is one of the principal causes of fishing jobs. It can be minimized if the joints are kept to the API specifications and the proper sized joints are used in the various holes. The minimum sizes that should be used with various bits are as follows: 12-in. and larger bits, 4x5-in. tool joints; 10-in. bits, 3 1/4x4 1/4-in. tool joints; 8-in. bits, 2 3/4x 3 3/4-in. tool joints; 6-in. bits, 2 1/4 x3 l/4 -in. tool joints; 4-in. bits, 1 5/8 x2 5/8-in. tool joints. Two rotary drill rigs were tried at San Manuel on the same hole, and a portable rotary drill rig was used on the Amico drilling for test coring the formation and for drilling in holes 3 and 4. Rotary drilling differs from churn drilling or cable tool drilling in that the bit is revolved by a string of drill pipe and the cuttings are removed from the hole by a thin solution of mud pumped through the drill pipe. The principal parts of a rotary rig are the power unit, a rotating table to revolve the drill pipe, hoists to raise and lower the pipe and to handle casing, and a pumping system to circulate the drilling liquid. The rig used on the Amico property at Miami was mounted on a truck. The larger rig used on the San Manuel property was hauled by several trucks and had separate turntable and pumping units. Diamond drill coring equipment was used successfully with the rotary rig in the holes on the Amico property, To allow for 2 3/8-in. drill pipe with tool joints, 3 1/2-in. core barrels and bits were used. With the standard 3 1/2-in. core barrel there was considerable difficulty in maintaining circulation with mud, so a barrel was designed with a smaller inner tube and a broad-faced bit. This allowed coarser material to circulate between the barrels. Rock bits of 5 5/8 to 3 7/8 in. were used with the rotary rig for drilling between core runs. Diamond drill equipment is much lighter than churn drill tools, so that fishing tools can usually be obtained from supply houses by air express when needed. Three churn drill holes on the Houghton property at Tiger were deepened by diamond drilling with Longyear UG Straitline gasoline-driven-machines. The open churn drill hole was cased with 2 1/2-in. black pipe. SCOPE THIS paper is a running commentary on metallurgical problems and developments, stressing ilmenite flotation, since the start of operations five years ago, at the mill of National Lead Company, Titanium Division, Maclntyre Development, Tahawus, New York. [ ] GENERAL In early 1941, when, world conditions threatened to cut off the supply of ilmenite (obtained largely from India) to this country, the National Lead Company started to develop and bring into production their Maclntyre Development. This operation supplied the bulk of the ilmenite used during the war period for the manufacture of the much needed titanium pigments. Maclntyre Development is at Tahawus, New York, on the headwaters of the Hudson River in the center of the scenic Adirondack Mountains. A general description of the operation was given in the Adirondack Issue of Mining and Metallurgy for November 1943. Operating tonnages and production have increased since 1943, however. Nearly 10,000 tons of ore and waste is broken and loaded daily in the open-pit mine. About half of this tonnage is ore, from which is produced nearly 800 tons of ilmenite concentrate and 1600 tons of magnetite concentrate daily. ORE-TYPES From an ore-dressing standpoint, there are five rather distinct ore types and two waste-rock types in the mine. The ore types are shown in Table 1. The anorthosite waste is a coarse-grained white rock, largely labradorite feldspar. The gabbro waste is generally finer grained, and contains, in addition to feldspar, 35 to 75 pct iron silicates such as hornblende, pyroxene, garnet and biotite. (communication to the Secretary*).:-Mr. Hansell conies from a country where charcoal is the fuel, and fuel is therefore costly. The Swedes appreciate more than most Americans the value of ore-concentration, not only in fuel-economy, but also in its influence on the quality of metal produced. Neither in these particulars nor in our knowledge of the dressing of iron-ore do I think. we can claim to be their equals. A 60 per cent. ore is not merely- twice, but more than four times, as valuable as an ore carrying 30 per cent,. Failure to appreciate this fact explains many idle American stacks, erected in defiance of it. Next to the rule that the equipment-cost of a blast-furnace increases approximately as the square of the hearth-diameter, I know of no mathematical relations involved in smelting iron which are less appreciated than the disadvantages of lean ores. Mr. Orn told me, when I was in Stockholm, that 2,500 patents on magnetic concentration had been taken out. He may have been joking as to the exact figure, but his remark indicated the great activity of inventors in this field. The magnetic separators seem to represent two main ideas, namely, wet and dry separation. The wet separators, such as the Gröndal, are applicable to ores requiring the greatest comminution by reason of the small particles of associated minerals or because of the occurrence of magnetite with a soft mineral likely to cake, as in those of Cornwall, Pa. Of the dry magnetic separators some are well suited for large-grained ores, such as those of Mineville, N. Y. We have also magnetic separators, like the Wetherill, for ores not usually classed as magnetic.

The contribution of grain boundary shear to total elongation, CS/E&apos;, has been measured in an Al-Zn eu-tectoid alloy that was quenched from above the invariant temperature, then annealed at 250° C to a grain size of&apos; 1.8 p. At 250°C, ks/E&apos; is low at both high and low strain rates, but reaches a maximum, estimated as 60 pct at an intermediate rate of 5 X 10 per rnin. Rate sensitivity, as measured by the index m = a log a/a log E&apos;, follows the same trend, and furthermore the maximum values of m and -cur at approximately the same strain rate. This result, combined with the metallographic observation that boundary migration enhances boundary shearing, is interpreted as supporting a previous suggestion that the high rate sensitivity characterizing super-plasticity is the result of combined boundary shearing and migration. It is suggested that the latter event relieves stress concentrations at triple points, and smoothes boundaries so that stress is governed largely by a viscous boundary shear. GrAIN boundary shear has been considered in relation to superplasticity in several recent papers.&apos; The problem has been to explain the high strain rate sensitivity of flow stress, and the variation of rate sensitivity with strain rate (E&apos;) and grain size (L). The requirements for superplasticity, small L and high T, suggest the reasonableness of an approach to high rate sensitivity involving grain boundary shear. Further support came from experiments on the A1-Cu eutectic alloy,&apos; where it was found that strain rate sensitivity of cast material annealed to produce an equiaxed, micron-size grain is always low; taking as an index of rate sensitivity m = a log a/a log <, m < 0.3. However, m in hot-worked alloy of comparable grain size can be as high as 0.7. In the cast and annealed material, each phase is a single crystal, the only boundaries are interphase boundaries, and it is, consequently, geometrically impossible for boundary shear to contribute to deformation in any major way. Other observations (for hot-worked material) were a-L at constant (low) strain rates and indications that the rate of recrystallization was enhanced as strain rate increased. As a result of this work, it was proposed that high rate sensitivity arises from a deformation mode of boundary shear associated with boundary migration. Migration serves to relieve stress concentrations at triple points, and smoothes boundaries so that they assume properties of fluid films. On the other hand, the low rate sensitivity observed at high and low strain rates reflects deformation of bulk material. Measurement of the variation of grain boundary shear with strain rate and m have not yet been made. Such measurements are important, especially in view of a proposal, differing in detail from the above, that high m arises merely from a transition between a grain boundary shear mode of deformation at low rates to a transgranular mode at high rates.2&apos;4 In the present work, the contribution of boundary shear to total deformation is measured and in addition metallographic observations are made on surfaces of deformed specimens to look at the interaction between boundary shear and migration. The Al-Zn eutectoid alloy was chosen for its homogeneous, fine-grained structure, which is obtained readily without hot-working. It has also been the subject of a previous phenom-enologically directed study. EXPERIMENTAL Material. Compression specimens, cross section 4 by + in., length \ in., were machined from a sand-cast ingot of composition 77.5 wt pct Zn, 22.5 wt pct Al. (The melt was prepared from 99.9 pct Zn and 99.99 pct Al.) After homogenization at 375°C for 50 hr, the specimens were quenched in brine and removed before the heat evolution that accompanies de -composition of the high-temperature phase.5&apos;6 The resulting microstructure, see Fig. l(a), was too fine for grain boundary sliding to be easily studied; coarser structures were obtained by annealing for various times at 2 50°C. Annealing was terminated by a brine quench. Final average intercept lengths between all grain boundaries (both interphase and those lying in a phase), L, were: 0.5 p [annealed for 15 min, Fig. (a)], 0.8, 1.1, and 1.8 p [Fig. l(b)l. Testing Procedure. An Instron machine was used for most of the compressive deformation. Tests were of two types: those in which crosshead velocity was changed in steps to measure m as a function of strain rate15 and tests at constant velocity to a fixed (engineering) strain of -0.2 (20 pct). Stress reached a steady-state value (a) which was plotted, on a logarithmic scale, against log strain rate (E&apos;). An alternate and equivalent evaluation of m was to take the slope of the log o vs log 6 curve. Time at temperature before testing was 15 min. Strain rates covered by the Instron (4 x lo-&apos; to 4 x 10&apos; per min) were insufficient; at a higher rate of 5 x lo2 per min a gas-operated testing machine was used, the gas driving a piston to compress the specimen at a controlled velocity.&apos; To obtain points on the log a vs log E&apos; curve at low rates, specimens were compressed by a dead weight. strain rate was an average value computed by dividing strain at the end of test by loading time. In some tests strain was measured at fractions of the loading time; creep rate was found to be reasonably constant.

THE existence of large saline deposits in that flat arid basin, known as the Great Salt Lake Desert, has long been recognized, but the extent and great commercial value of these deposits has not been generally appreciated. That a very considerable interest has recently developed is indicated by the fact that about 263 prospecting permits-each covering about 2560 acres of land in this Desert-have been issued under the Potash Leasing Act (Act of 0ct. 2, 1917-40 Stat. 297), and patents granted on approximately 40,000 acres. It is reported that patents and leases have, or will be applied for on an additional 80,000 acres in the basin. , Tests have been made on probably less than 10 per cent. of the total area of the basin, but these have proved a practically unlimited supply of brine available -sufficient, probably, to. furnish the potassium and magnesium chloride requirements of this country for at least a hundred years.

THE New Cornelia Branch of the Phelps Dodge Corporation is at Ajo, Pima County, Ariz. It is at the southern terminus of the Tucson, Cornelia and Gila Bend Railroad, which connects with the Southern Pacific Railroad at Gila Bend, Ariz., approximately 43 miles to the north. HISTORY Early history of the Ajo district has been related by A. W. Allen1 and by T. A. Rickard.2 Briefly, steps looking to the large-scale development of the ore body were instituted as early as 1912. This work culminated in the equipment of the property for open-pit mining by steam shovels. Ores initially mined carried economic amounts of copper carbonates as the principal copper-bearing mineral. Treatment methods developed for the extraction of the copper content involved leaching and a 5000-ton leaching plant was constructed and placed in operation in early 1917. Description of methods and equipment employed in this plant has been given by A. A. Tobelmann and James A. Potter.3 As exhaustion of the carbonate ore body neared, and mining operations exposed an adequate tonnage of sulphide ores, a 5000-ton concentrator was constructed for their treatment. That plant has been described by H. Kenyon Burch.4 Construction was completed and the plant was placed in operation in early 1924. Changes made in the original plant to improve practices and increase production will be the subject of subsequent paragraphs of this paper.

USE of gold leaf goes back to biblical and even to prehistoric times. Both gold and silver, as well as other metals, were employed in illustrating or illuminating manuscripts. The medieval monks also used bronze powders. Metals were subdivided as finely as possible by mechanical methods, or by granulation and then were pounded into finely divided flakes. Substances such as honey have also been employed, since early times to keep the flakes of metal apart during grinding. Stearic acid is a more modern agent used in flaking aluminum and other metals. Finely divided "blue powder" is a by-product in retorting zinc ores, and contains from 78 to 90 per cent of zinc metal. This has been used as a precipitant for precious metals in the cyanide process and for chemical reduction processes. The making of zinc dust by atomizing is a step well known in electrolytic zinc plants. The Thermit process of Goldschmidt also requires the use of finely divided aluminum.

IN the early fall of 1025, the writer was conducting, in the Ledoux and Co. labora-tory, New York, experiments directed to-ward ascertaining the effect on its impurity content when cathode copper was subjected to a current of various gases at an elevated temperature below the melting point. The apparatus consisted of a vertical I-in. dia. silica tube about 12 in. long, heated on the outside. The cathodes were broken to pass 3/8-in. mesh, and a current of various differ-ent gases was passed up through a 4-in. long column of these loose cathode particles in the vertical tube furnace. Temperature was maintained to 1500° to 1600°F. and the gas treatments lasted from 3 to 6 hr. The writer observed that whenever reducing gas (H2 or CO) was used, these cathode par-ticles stuck together at points of contact with each other. The cohesion was so marked and tenacious that an examination was made of the fractured surfaces, when cathode particles were broken from the cluster. Crystal growth was always found to have taken place across the surfaces where separate particles were in contact, but only after all oxides, sulphates, etc., had been completely removed. The idea of a possible new process was then conceived and was disclosed to A. M. Smoot (V. P. Ledoux and Co.) with intent to obtain his views. The first conception as given Smoot was "to gas-clean broken cathodes, put them in an extrusion press, solidify and extrude them at around 1500°F." Smoot&apos;s reaction, after a few moments considera-tion, was, "It looks perfectly all right to me." The writer and his assistants, W. H. Osborn and H. H. Stout, Jr., after confer-ring as to ways and means, decided to go ahead with preliminary laboratory experi-ments, which, it was thought, would move the new process from the possible to the probable. This program followed a course indicated by three basic considerations: I. Since brittle cathodes were often unin-tentionally produced, it seemed probable that the laws controlling this type of deposi-tion could be ascertained. 2. We had already proved the gas-clean-ing feature. 3. There remained to prove: whether a sound, homogeneous metal billet could be produced with crystal growth established over the entire surface of each individual particle in the billet; and, if so, what would be the physical properties? Osborn arranged with Columbia Uni-versity for conducting experiments in its research laboratory to prove or disprove the third item; Columbia assigned C. A. Phillipi, Jr. to assist in the project. A press with a cylinder 2 in. high and of I-in. dia. was used. It was surrounded and heated by a resistance coil of Nichrome wire. Broken tough cathodes were used.

The petrographic microscope is a well known tool in nonmetallic materials research. Its utility in the study of perlite is, therefore, not surprising. Valuable information has been derived on samples smaller than those needed by most other methods of analysis. Relatively little has been written about the petrographic analysis of perlite for two chief reasons: perlite is a material of relatively new commercial interest; and the independent prospector or expander, responsible for most studies, attacks the problem from an immediately practical viewpoint. Hence, petrographic studies of perlite have been limited to academic aspects. Rapid development of commercial interest in perlite has changed the situation. Mining and expanding companies now have effective research tools; and such instruments as the petrographic microscope have added materially to practical knowledge about this mineral. Petrographic techniques employed in the search for suitable deposits screen worthless samples rapidly and inexpensively compared with large-scale expanding tests. Hence, only samples of potential quality are selected for further testing. Field appearance of perlite reveals little about its true identity and practically nothing about its commercial significance. Consequently, any method that can be used to separate the "wheat from the chaff" is valuable. In addition to the conventional thin-section and immersion methods used in evaluation of crude perlite, petrographic microscope techniques have contributed to the study of expanded perlite. When apparently similar materials behave as differently in use as perlites, the internal structure of the individual particles becomes a subject of great interest. The purpose of this paper is to discuss some of the petrographic techniques used to characterize this material. WHAT IS PERLITE AND WHERE IS IT FOUND? Perlite was at first described as a glassy rhyolite possessing a pearl-like luster and exhibiting numerous concentric cracks resembling an onion skin appearance.&apos; Fig. 1 is an illustration of perlite in this classical sense. Recently, its definition has taken on a commercial connotation: an acid volcanic containing 2 to 5% of combined water that, when heated rapidly to the softening point of the glass, coincident with the volatilization of the combined water, expands or "pops". Fig. 2, although hardly fitting the classical description given by Johannsen, is an excellent perlite in the commercial sense. It may occur as a breccia in rhyolite, (Fig. 3) and sometimes it is associated with obsidian nodules, as illustrated in Fig. 4. The term perlite includes the expanded product also. In the United States, perlitic rocks are restricted to the western part of the country. 2 Elsewhere in the northern hemisphere, European occurrences follow a belt beginning in Iceland and extending in a southeasterly direction through Scotland, County Antrim in Northern Ireland, and through the Massif Central of France, Germany, and Hungary; thence, into Italy and Sardinia, and through some of the Aegean Islands. A general oriental belt extends from Japan through Australia and New Zealand. Rhyolitic areas elsewhere in the world undoubtedly contain perlite.

It is the purpose of this paper to summarize, as far as possible, the metallurgical information and experience gained by the Ordnancc Department, during the war, in the manufacture of artillery cartridge cases, to describe the tests to which artillery cartridge cases were put, and to summarize the knowledge and experience gained in this testing. The authors wish to acknowledge the aid given by manufacturers, army officers, and civilian employees of the Department in obtaining data. Artillery cartridge cases are cold drawn from circular disks punched from strips of rolled brass. The rnanufacture involves from 25 to 30 main operations, which are done almost entirely on a punch press. Descriptions of the operations have appeared in various periodical:: and, therefore, will not he given here. After each cupping, or drawing, operation, except the last, the cases are annealed at from 540" to 650" C. (1000" to 1200°F.), to remove all the hardening stresses set up in the metal and to allow complete recrystallization. After each annealing, the cases are pickled in niter cake or sulfuric-acid solution and then washed in water to remove all traces of acid. In some instances, the cases arc then immersed in a cyanide-salt solution, and afterwards rinsed in water, to remove the thin layer of copper that forms on the surface of the cases during the acid pickle. The last cold-drawing operation is followcd by the heading operation which, by flattening the head of the case on the outside, causes the metal to flow on the inside to approximately the proper finished dimensions. The mouth, or open end, is then annealed at 430" to 450" (&apos;. 1800" to 900" F.) by immersion in a salt bath or by gas flames. After being washed, the eases are tapered, when they arc ready for machining, inspection, and testing. The oil embargo and increasing disillusionment with nu- clear power have put this country&apos;s abundant coal reserves in growing demand. Both the government and industry are looking toward increased coal mining, and with this goes an increased interest in new and advanced methods of coal utilization. One advanced coal system stands out among the rest-magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). Its high efficiency, strong probability of sulfur dioxide control, and limited consumption of cooling water place MHD in a unique position to help the power generation industry. Another point in MHD&apos;s favor is the capital costs of operation, which are lower than those of other advanced technologies. However, initial costs are higher and realization of a commercial MHD plant in this country may be more than a decade away.
