BERYLLIUM, magnesium, zinc and cadmium, together with mercury, constitute a coherent sub-group of the periodic system and these metals, excepting mercury; have been studied in sufficient detail by the new X-ray diffraction methods to prove their common adherence to the hexagonal close-packed type of crystal structure with a progressive increase in axial ratio as we pass through the group from beryllium to cadmium. The first four columns of Table 1 summarize the data on crystal structure of these metals reported in the International Critical Tables.1 The last two columns are based on results obtained in the present investigation. SEVERAL notable papers, and free discussion on many controversial subjects, marked the various sessions of the Petroleum Division at the annual meeting. The Division first convened on Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 16, and wound up with a dinner and technical meeting on Thursday night. H. C. Fowler presided at the opening session, which was devoted to problems of engineering research and production engineering. Joseph Chalmers abstracted his paper on the flow of air and gas through porous media, in the preparation of which E. L Rawlins and D. B. Talia-ferro contributed. G. H. Fancher told how much he and his associates at Pennsylvania State College were interested in this field, and described the problems they had met in conducting test work. He made a plea for standardization of testing methods. Mr. Fowler then read an abstract of written discussion by Professor Barb, which was followed by discussion by Dr. Fancher and Mr. Chalmers of technical points in connection with the Chalmers' paper. H. H. Hill abstracted written discussion from Messrs. Wilde and Moore, of the Humble company. The second paper, by K. B. Nowels, on computing pressure drop in the pipe of flowing oil wells, was abstracted by the author. Messrs. Blair Smith, G. W. Coggeshall, and I. I. Gardescu participated in the discussion, and the chairman abstracted written discussion prepared by Mr. Rawlins. Most of this had to do with the viscosity of gas¬oil mixtures, on which subject Mr. Nowels said there was great need of accurate technical information.

RAPIDLY rising world demand for mineral products has accelerated depletion of the more readily accessible ores, particularly those of premium grade. Operations must proceed at a faster rate to deeper horizons, where there are problems of ground control that restrict economic recovery of the mineral and introduce new hazards to mine personnel. For some of the new Canadian mining fields severe problems of ground stress are still in the future, but much of Canada's mineral output comes from well established mines that have reached considerable depths. It must also be anticipated that the depletion of premium grade ores will eventually necessitate mining low grade material at competitive cost, and unsolved problems of ground control can materially increase costs. Studies of ground stress phenomena in underground workings are therefore considered a present-day necessity, especially since these investigations must be a long-term effort owing to the highly complex nature of the problem and the difficulty of making full-scale observations. In recent years the Mines Branch of the Department of Mines and Technical Surveys in Canada has conducted such an investigation. This report of the work is primarily concerned with stress problems in some Canadian coal mines and, in particular, with mine bumps. Mines Branch investigations of this and related problems are carried out by a small team of mining engineers and physicists who, with assistance from geologists, pool their special skills in an integrated program. These Canadian investigations combine a field and laboratory approach. Since data obtained under contrasting mining conditions allow useful comparisons of ground behavior under stress, this article will present data gathered under a wide range of Canadian coal mining conditions. Two contrasting longwalls in eastern Canada will be discussed and two dissimilar pillar extraction operations in western Canada. Locale of Observations In eastern Canada observations are being made in the collieries at Springhill, Nova Scotia. The district's No. 2 mine, which has a history of bump occurrences dating back to 1917, is currently being worked at a depth of 4200 ft. The mining method is longwall retreating along the strike and the practice is to retreat three walls in line, each about 350 ft long. There is no machine cutting or shooting—the coal is hand-picked and hand-loaded onto face conveyors. There are three rows of hardwood chock block supports parallel to the coal face. These supports are built during the two daily coal loading shifts, and the rear line is withdrawn during the midnight shift. The goaves are partially packed by stone midwalls 12 ft wide which are built forward daily in step with the face advance. The seam dips at 15° and averages 9 ft of strong, well cleated bituminous coal enclosed in competent beds of shales, sandy shales, and sandstones of Carboniferous age. The bumps rarely disturb the retreating longwall faces but manifest themselves as violent upthrusts of pavement in the levels leading to the walls. Observations have also been made in Springhill's No. 6 mine, which operated in a 5-ft seam of coal at a depth of about 2500 ft. Although No. 6 mine was

IN 1943, we found, in the new Mather operation, a very unusual and disappointing condition in the footwall rock where all of our main haulageways were to be located. With the exception of a few hundred feet out of the thousands then planned and since driven, all of the openings require support. In general, the ground is not particularly heavy, at least by our standards, but it must be supported and the back carefully covered. Also, our operations require rather wide plat openings (16 to 18 ft) and rather flat curves at the turn-outs, all of which adds to the problem. When this completely unforeseen condition was discovered, ordinary timbering was the only answer, because of the impossibility of obtaining adequate steel supplies in time due to war shortages. Then by the time steel supplies were obtained and a practice developed, we found ourselves with between four and five miles of main haulage drifts and plat openings of a permanent nature, all of which were supported by hardwood timber, some of which had already rotted to an unsafe degree. You can appreciate our surprise when we discovered that we had added very little to an existing record. Attention was called to a footnote in a copy of "Carnegie Pocket Companion" year 1923. The note read: "Full information as to uses of H-Beams is given in pamphlet entitled 'Steel Mine Timbers.' " A search of our Engineering Library brought to light a pamphlet printed in 1911 showing extensive use of steel for this purpose. Except for welding in place of riveting, we have added very little to the designs in that book. We have, however, developed an experience which proves, at least to our own satisfaction, that steel mine supports pay off under the proper conditions. We are now convinced, in spite of the relatively high initial cost of materials, that steel sets, because of comparatively low installation cost, are actually cheaper than either treated or untreated wood sets, if they are properly designed and adapted. Several Sections in Use: Convenience guided our first experiments in steel sets, since for a number of years, we had used the 4-in. WF, 10 lb per ft section in 10-ft lengths as safety forepoles along with wood forepoles. This section replaced the 40-lb rail which had formerly been used for the purpose. Having the 4-in. WF sections on hand, it was natural that our first experiments in steel sets involved their use. Later, the rolling of the 10-lb section was discontinued in favor of the much stronger 13-lb section, which is now standard for both legs and caps in areas of no particular weight, but which, none the less, require permanent support. Our experiments involved the use of the 10- and 13-lb sections as legs and 6- and 8-in. I beams, 16 and 23 lb per ft, respectively, as caps. Experience soon indicated that, if the ground were heavy enough, and the opening wide enough to require a cap stronger than 13-lb, the 8-in, 23-lb should be used, eliminating the 6-in. I beam. We now know that the 8-in. WF section of the same weight, which we propose to use in the future, is considerably stronger for the amount of money involved. Comparative Strengths: Tables I to IV giving strengths of several species of timbers as compared with the structural sections that we now use have been prepared in accordance with accepted practice. Experience indicates that failure due to compression perpendicular to the grain of the wood does not destroy the effectiveness of a wood set frequently enough to be a practical factor. Therefore, no table of these values is included.

The author presents a history of the development of the Port of Long Beach from its beginning in 1905 to the present construction of a new bulk loading facility. In describing this new facility, emphasis is placed on such aspects as rail car and truck handling, gravity yard, rotary car dumping, bottom dumping, car dumping equipment, feeding and conveying, ship-loader-stockpiler, stockpiling and reclaim, dust control, and construction problems. Development of the Port of Long Beach, Calif. (see Fig. I), began in 1905. In that year private Long Beach interests acquired 800 acres of marshland in the Inner Harbor area and initiated a program of channel dredging and land reclamation. Efforts to establish a municipal port began a short time later and culminated in the opening of Pier 1 in 1911. An event of even greater significance to the port future also occurred in 1911. This was the tideland grant enactment by the state legislature that conveyed to the city of Long Beach all of the state's rights in the tidelands located within the city boundaries. The grant stipulated that all revenue produced from the tidelands be used for the development of navigation, commerce, and fisheries. During the next 15 years up to 1926, the port's commercial growth was steady, although relatively slow. During this period, several fundamental steps in the development of a major harbor were accomplished. These included the creation of the Board of Harbor Commissioners in 1917, the dredging of the Inner Harbor and entrance channel to accommodate deep draft vessels, and the correction of a serious silting problem through construction of the Los Angeles River Flood Control Channel. These efforts bore fruit during the ensuing 10 years in the establishment of more than $30,000,000 worth of industrial plants and private marine terminals in the Inner Harbor. Commerce over municipal wharves also increased more rapidly, and it became necessary to start the development of the harbor in a seaward direction. In 1936, oil was discovered in the harbor area, and the first Harbor Dept. well was brought in 2 years later. It soon became evident that the city of Long Beach would receive substantial revenue that, under the terms of the state grant of 1911, must be used in the development of the port. It was further realized that to properly guide and coordinate such development, a long range comprehensive plan was essential. The Board of Harbor Commissions contracted with G. F. Nicholson and J. F. Collins, consulting engineers, for the preparation of such a report that was completed in 1940. The Nicholson-Collins report proposed the development of an East Basin, between the entrance channel and the Los Angeles River, and a West Basin in the area now occupied by the Long Beach Naval Shipyard. Twenty full-size berths were to be provided in the East Basin and more than fifty berths in the West Basin. The report recommended extensive modern terminal facilities for handling waterborne cargo. Attention was given to improvement of the street and highway system to give better vehicular access and to avoid congestion within the port. To a large extent the recommendations of the Nicholson-Collins report were followed in the subsequent development of the East Basin. This development was greatly accelerated by World War 11, with its need for increased oil production and additional shipping facilities. The wartime and immediate postwar construction was largely concentrated on Pier A, with the development of Piers B, C and D following in more recent years. An important factor in the planning of these piers was their dual function as oil drilling sites and cargo piers. The Navy's acquisition of the West Basin area made it necessary to depart from the Nicholson-Collins plan and find other areas for future expansion. At the present time only one Inner Harbor Port-owned area having protected deep water frontage remains undeveloped. This is the property fronting on Channel 2 in the Inner Harbor acquired in December 1957, from Pacific Dock and Terminal Co. The growth of the port has been in a southerly direction since the construction of the Long Beach Naval Shipyard in the West Basin area. Recent extension of Piers F, G and J into the ocean follows typical port construction methods developed during the expansion of the Middle Harbor during the last 20 years.

TAE chemical industry is constantly looking for new materials which either are more resistant to corrosion than those now available or have improved physical properties to meet the requirements of higher temperatures and greater pressures. Attack by acids is-one of the more important forms of corrosion-and in the last few years the development of acid-resistant alloys has been quite rapid. Perhaps the most notable example is that of nitric acid, 'the problem of which has largely been solved by the chromium-iron and chromium-iron-nickel alloys. Sulfuric acid may be handled in lead, iron, or the iron-silicon alloys, depending on conditions. As to hydrochloric acid, no metal or alloy can be called entirely satisfactory for handling. this acid under plant conditions.1 The results of our investigations on the resistance of the nickel-molybdenum alloys to hydrochloric acid have been confirmed by those of Guertler, Rohn, Schulz, Jenge, and others,' but thus far only one such alloy has approached commercial production in Germany; this contains approximately 15 per cent. chromium and 7 per cent. molybdenum with the remainder chiefly nickel. Dr. S. W. Parr, as far back as 1914, developed a complex alloy known as "illium," with a nickel base and containing some molybdenum.3 Dr. Parr was primarily interested in an alloy for lining bomb calorimeters, and while illium does show good resistance to acid it is too expensive for general use. This work has for its purpose the establishment of a new method for determining the structural composition of alloys. The area occupied by a constituent on a few representative photomicrographs of the alloy is measured, by a planimeter, especially designed for metallographic work, and the volume and proportional weight of the constituent calculated. Experiments have shown that the results are accurate enough to justify the application of the method to many problems in metallographic research instead of chemical analysis. The advantage of the method is the possibility of determining the amount of the constituents without separating them from the alloy; their composition may also be determined if the ultimate chemical analysis of the alloy is known. Suppose Fig. 1 represents a part of a photomicrograph on which the total area of the black figures is to be found. By a system of parallel lines drawn short equal distances apart all figures may be divided into trapezoids. As the area of a trapezoid is equal to its median multiplied by its altitude, the relation between the total areas of the black and the white figures comprised within each strip is equal to the relation between the sums of medians for these figures respectively. This is also true for the whole area of the photomicrograph. Therefore, to determine the total areas of the black and white figures we must first find the proportion between the sums of the medians and then divide the area of the whole photomicrograph in the same proportion.

THE recrystallization of cold-worked metals is studied ordinarily by determining the temperatures required for complete recrystallization to occur within a given arbitrary time period, usually within 15 min. to 2 hr. The results obtained are conventionally assembled in a three-dimensional diagram relating this temperature to the amount of cold-work (percentage deformation) and the resultant grain size, though sometimes other modes of representation are employed.1 Such three-dimensional diagrams are not complete, for the number of variables exceeds the number represented. The process of recrystallization is characterized by a time-rate, a fact that is not portrayed upon ordinary recrystallization diagrams. It is known that recrystallization consists in the formation of new nuclei and the growth of these nuclei, a process that continues until the matrix is completely consumed and the original set of grains entirely replaced by the new. This knowledge is old.2 Truly heterogeneous reactions invariably proceed by nucleation and growth; the decomposition of eutectoid solid solutions provides an example about which much is known,3 and freezing, originally studied by Tammann, provides the classic example. Although recrystallization is not a heterogeneous reaction .within the orthodox meaning of the term, the mechanism of the process is the same. As in eutectoid inversion and freezing, it should be possible to study the rate of isothermal recrystallization as a function of time, and it should also be possible to analyze the isothermal reaction curve into the component rates of nucleation and growth that determine them.* Other methods, not employing the rates of nucleation and growth, have been used to represent the rates of such reactions, but these in general have been artificial and have not led to progress.4,5? The theory of recrystallization is not in advanced state; if recrystallization data were obtained, in terms of the rate of isothermal recrystallization, and in terms of the rate of nucleation and the rate of growth of recrystallized grains, and in particular if the temperature coefficients of these rates were measured accurately, an adequate theory should be more readily developed.27 Such an effort requires proper experimental technique, but especially requires suitable methods of mathematical analysis to convert measurements made upon a surface of polish into values for the rate of nucleation and the rate of growth and to combine these into a rate of isothermal recrystallization. These methods are now

As sphalerite is such a common constituent of many types of ore, the present investigation was undertaken to determine what its relations are to the other minerals in the deposits, and also whether these are of any genetic significance. The data presented herewith were obtained from a mineralographic study of about 200 ore specimens from some 43 different localities, represented by suites of specimens in the Cornell University collection. The variation in hydrogen content of basic open-hearth steels during refining and the effect of changing from steam to air atomization were studied. The water content of the furnace atmosphere, the slag basicity, and the degree of oxidation of the slag-metal system largely control the hydrogen in the steel. SMALL amounts of hydrogen have an adverse effect on the ductility of steel and a wide range of hydrogen contents has an adverse effect on the internal soundness of both ferrous and nonferrous castings. This has been of major concern to the metal industry, both manufacturers and fabricators, for many years. As one of the results of continuing investigations of the hydrogen problem, much has been learned about methods of reducing the hydrogen content of liquid metals below the relatively high levels that are normally associated with such phenomena as rising ingots and excessive porosity in sand casting. However, it was not until a reliable and simple method for sampling and analyzing liquid metal was developed that much progress was possible in quantitatively evaluating the effect of steelmaking practice on hydrogen contents at levels below 6 to 8 ppm. Throughout all the work described in the following presentation the Geffner pintube technique was used to obtain samples of liquid metal1 * and the tin-fusion method, developed at Massachusetts Institute of Technology,2 was used to analyze the samples. Before attempting a systematic experimental program for minimizing the hydrogen content of open-hearth steels, it was necessary to determine the variation in hydrogen in the open-hearth bath during the normal processing of a heat. The logs of ten heats are illustrated in Figs. 1 through 7. The number at each point on the graphs refers to the number of pintube samples analyzed for hydrogen. An increase in the hydrogen content of the liquid metal during the early period of refining is apparent in all heats. There is evidence of a decrease in hydrogen later in the refining period, see Fig. 2, for example. Therefore, the existence of a maximum hydrogen content at some intermediate time during the refining period is anticipated. To test for the existence of a maximum, the data illustrated in Figs. 1 to 5 were grouped together so that they could be examined on a collectively comparable basis. The grouping was effected, as illustrated in Fig. 8, by superimposing Figs. 1 to 5 so that the apparent hydrogen maxima coincided at a fixed position, indicated by the zero on the time axis. Also, by vertical adjustment until the graphs appeared to the eye to be superimposed, the hydrogen scale was made to show the change in hydrogen content. That is, a standard amount was subtracted from the hydrogen values for each heat. Therefore, Fig. 8 represents a generalized presentation of the data and, for this reason, cannot be used to predict the actual hydrogen content of the bath during refining, but rather to show the probable rate of change in hydrogen during refining. Statistical examination of the grouped data in Fi.g. 8 shows that the apparent. increase and suhsequent decrease in hydrogen are real and confirms the existence of a maximum in general. The average increase In hydrogen during the early period of refining is between 0.8 and 1.3 ppm per hr, and the

This paper brings within the compass of one comparatively brief article a general description of the situation concerning the nation's water resources. It touches upon the phenomenal growth in the demand for water supply and emphasizes the problems facing the coal industry both with regard to acid mine water drainage discharged from active and abandoned mines and the suspended solids discharged to the stream system from wet coal preparation plants. IT must always be remembered, with regard to the problem of water-borne industrial wastes, that stream pollution from any cause is just one factor in the comprehensive problem of water supply in modern times. Industries nonexistent 25 years ago are now flourishing, and supplies of water piped to homes and apartments, as well as the greater number of plumbing fixtures per dwelling and per building, have created an ever growing demand on the country's water resources. Indication of this rapid growth in demand is shown in Table I, which is quoted from Abrams. of Texas increased 287% and the water consumption 7000 per cent." The domestic load varies greatly, depending on the extent of the available supply and the habits of the community. According to the report of the President's Water Resources Policy Commission' the United States Public Health Service reported a national average of 127 gal per capita per day, varying from 60 gal in communities of 500 persons to 140 or 150 gal in cities of 10,000 or over. Other critical areas may be cited to illustrate the inter-relation between new industrial processes and the demands for water in the area where the new enterprise is located. Powell and Wilson have pointed out that during World War 11, in the vicinity of Louisville, Ky., a rapid expansion of industry took place, consisting of numerous synthetic rubber plants. The demand for water increased from 37 million gal per day in 1937 to 62 million gal in 1943. These heavy requirements drew down the supply stored in the water-bearing aquifers to such an extent that urgent plans for recharging were considered. Similar situations have developed in the Los Angeles area and in the vicinity of Texas City. Warne4 has drawn attention to the situation in Los Angeles area, where in the West Basin the withdrawal of ground water in 1945 was 90,000 acre-ft, almost double the amount of the natural fresh water recharge. The draw down has been so severe that the level of the ground water is now below sea level, and sea water is invading the West Basin aquifers at rates up to 300 ft per year. In the Report of the Engineers Joint Council it is pointed out that in the area of Texas City the ground water table has been critically lowered. RAPID colorimetric estimation of the amount of transparent minerals has been applied success- fully to instream mill products at the cryolite flotation plant of the Pennsylvania Salt Mfg. Co., Natrona, Pa. Apparatus used was a Bausch & Lomb monochromatic colorimeter. The optical assembly of the colorimeter, shown in Fig. 1, passes light from a 6-v, 32-cp, prefocus incandescent lamp through two condensing lenses, a heat-absorbing filter, an aperture-control diaphragm, an interference filter, and a sample container. The light finally strikes a barrier-layer photocell and the output current of the photocell is measured by a galvanometer. The engraved index line of the collective lens, located between the lamp and the galvanometer, is imaged upon the transmission scale of the colorimeter by the galvanometer mirror. Reflected light from the galvanometer mirror, the position of which is determined by the output current of the photocell, enables reading of percent transmission throughout the mineral sample being tested. J. C. WRIGHT.-The problem of organizing and maintaining a vocational class for those employees who are engaged in the mining industry depends on several most important factors. The first is the sympathetic cooperation of employer and employee; the second is to find the subject matter that must be presented to these men; and the third is to find the instructor who can present that subject matter. This is perhaps the most difficult, for we usually find a man who knows the material that is to be presented but is not a teacher or does not know how to organize his material. The man must know the subject matter from the standpoint of absolute contact with industry in order to be a successful teacher. I have come into contact with two kinds of schools organized in connection with mining occupations. In one type the instruction leans very largely toward elementary subjects, arithmetic, reading and writing and spelling; it is not of such a character as to help or improve the working man in his occupation in the sense that we are attempting when we speak of vocational education. In the other type of school, an engineer is usually employed as a teacher. He immediately begins to give the things with which he is most familiar and the instruction becomes such as only those who possess a high-school or college education, perhaps, are able to receive. In between these two schools is the school we are trying to, promote, a school that will meet the needs of those employed. MARGUERITE W. THE WORK OF THE DRILLER and of the oil geologist is seriously handicapped by the impossibility of actually seeing what is going on inside a borehole as it is being drilled. Visual information of the position and condition of the casing, and of the characters and attitudes of strata passed through would be of inestimable benefit. The best substitute for putting a periscope down a hole is the taking of photographs of its interior at points where information is desired. An apparatus for this purpose has been constructed by Dr. Thomas Reinhold, of Heemstede, Holland, and one instrument of his design has been put into practical use by the Geological Survey of The Netherlands in searching for water. To the best of our knowledge, this instrument has not been applied to oilfield problems, although the possibility has been mentioned in the one or two brief notices of the camera which have appeared in the literature.' The purpose of presenting this description of the instrument, with some examples of its work, is to suggest that it might be adapted to serve a variety of useful purposes in American oilfields, and with the hope that discussion will bring out any modifications necessary to make the apparatus more valuable to drillers and geologists.

The record of the largest magnesium plant in the country utilizing sea water as a primary raw material stands as another victory in the struggle for large-scale production of pure chemical elements from the oceans. Bromine was the first element to be economically and commercially recovered when, in 1933, a six million pound per year unit was built on the Atlantic Coast near Wilmington, North Carolina, by the Ethyl-Dow Chemical Co.' The bromine was reacted with ethylene to produce ethylene dibromide, a necessary associate of tetraethyl lead in ethyl antiknock fluid. Within eight years that plant was doubled and redoubled, and another large unit was put into operation at Freeport, Texas, taking bromine from the Gulf of Mexico. In 1940, in fortunate anticipation of the impending demand for magnesium and the limitations of the production from natural brines, the Dow Chemical Co. turned again to the sea, and designed and erected a plant at Freeport to produce 18,000,000 lb. of magnesium per year from sea water.2 In March 1941, two months after the new plant had been put into successful operation, construction of an 18,000,000-lb. Government-financed addition was started. Late in 1941, as a part of the $400,000,000 defense program intended to produce 600,000,000 to 700,000,000 lb. of magnesium per year, Dow was asked to build and operate for the Government a 72,000- ooo-lb. plant near its original plant at Freeport. Within a few days after the Japanese made their attack at Pearl Harbor, preparation of a site was started at Velasco, Texas, for the construction of the Texas plant of the Dow Magnesium Corporation—the largest known magnesium plant utilizing sea water as its raw matcrial. Less than six months after the first piling was driven, urgently needed magnesium was in steady production. Five months later, the plant had exceeded its rated capacity. It remained above rated production until the general magnesium curtailment was applied to Government-owned plants in September 1944. Credit for the construction and operation record of the Dow magnesium plant must be divided among the efforts of a very determined group of men, an extremely favorable location, and a simple process. It is with the two latter aspects of the plant that this article will deal. The site for the new enterprise was chosen near Velasco, Texas, on property bordering the Brazos River at a point approximately 6 miles inland from the original magnesium plant and 7 miles inland from the Freeport Harbor on the Gulf of Mexico. This location was far enough away from the operating units to reduce both interference from construction and the vulnerability of closely bunched manufacturing operations to the then feared air attack. LASH, Cleveland, 0.-I have found in practical experience that it is not objectionable to have some blow-holes in ingots. They enlarge during solidification and have a tendency to cause the steel to rise. If they are of fairly small size they weld up quite readily, especially where they are some distance from the surface. In that way a pipe, which is much more detrimental than a few small blow-holes, is prevented. There is a very great difference in the formation of blow-holes in steel. You get one condition in soft steel and entirely another condition in rail carbon, or the still higher grades. The figures that are given in Mr. Gathmann's paper I imagine are taken from the higher carbons, as it is very seldom that piping occurs in soft steel. J. W. WHEN a new material becomes available to industry, it is useful to describe its properties as a guide to its most effective application; and when the new material may be produced in compositions having a series of graded properties, tests to select the combination of properties best adapted for various uses are helpful. The class of materials to be con-sidered in this paper are hard tool materials produced by processes of powder metallurgy from hard carbide constituents and various matrices of iron, nickel or cobalt, or alloys of them with tungsten, or tungsten and carbon. The customary use of carbide hard alloys is for metal-cutting tools; although wire-drawing dies, lathe centers, follow rests, grinding rests, burnishers, rolls, extrusion dies, measuring gauges and micrometers, and a number of other tools are also made with these hard alloys as the essen-tial wear-resisting parts. The properties and tests to be considered are those affecting these uses. In the development of tool, materials since the industrial revolution we have had carbon tool steels, Mushet steel, high-speed steels, stellites, and now cemented carbide compositions. For an understanding of the latter category of materials their properties and uses relative to the older and more familiar tool materials will be considered.

The bituminous coal industry faces a real problem, if it desires to retain the position in the power-generation field to which it is economi-cally entitled. More power is probably produced today for electrical energy, for steam-driven and steam-heating industries and processes, for transportation by rail, water, highway and air, collectively, than ever before, and yet the total bituminous coal production has decreased about 38 per cent, from 575,000,000 tons in 1926 to 357,500,000 tons in 1934. It is not the intention of the writer to recommend coal as a fuel for automobiles and airplanes, but rather to point to these forms of transpor-tation as being responsible in a very measurable degree for reducing the coal consumed by railroads. Petroleum products may still further reduce consumption of locomotive fuel through the extension of the use of Diesel-driven trains. Oil-burning steam-driven locomotives are replacing coal in some places, where railroads operating high-speed pas-senger trains are willing, temporarily at least, to pay a premium for the fuel, that is low in ash and produces less smoke and practically no cinders. In the navy and ocean-going passenger ships, oil is so firmly estab-lished, and has such definite advantages over coal as formerly fired, in steaming radius, in ease of bunkering, cleanliness, and reduction in firing labor, that very outstanding developments in the handling and burning of coal will be required in order to replace oil. For freighters on the Great Lakes, coal is the logical fuel, but there is great and immediate need of radical improvements in its use, else that market also may be lessened. It is not within the scope of this paper to discuss in detail bitumi-nous coal for either locomotive or marine use, but, rather, generation of power in stationary plants, consisting of electrical generating stations and that very large group of miscellaneous industrial plants, such as paper, rubber, textile, steel and other industries that use electrical, mechanical, and steam power, derived from either hydro or some form of fuel.

A new method is described for the production of cold-bonded pellets using a hydraulic binder, such as portland cement. Large-scale pilot-plant tests have proved that self-fluxing pellets of high reducibility and good handling strength can be made by the method. Blast-furnace trials have shown that the pellets are an acceptable burden material, comparable with self-fluxing sinter or heat-hardened pellets. Economic factors of commercial-scale production are discussed. The Grangcold Pellet Process—for which patents have been applied or already granted in a number of coun-tries—uses a hydraulic adhesive such as portland cement, slag cements, pozzolanic cements, etc., for the production of cold-bonded pellets. The idea of using a hydraulic binder for the agglomeration of iron-ore fines is not new. Portland cement was proposed as an adhesive for cold-bonded iron-ore briquettes in patents granted more than 50 years ago.' In a report on the briquetting of iron-ore fines, published in Stahl und Eisen in 1959; it is stated that briquettes bonded with portland cement are used on a small scale at an ironwork in Germany. According to the report, the briquettes showed excellent strength in the blast furnace although their general use was made impossible because they required a long hardening time, during which they are sticky, soft, and difficult to store and handle. The Grangcold Pellet Process has overcome this particular disadvantage by mixing the balls with a suitable amount of the balling concentrate before storing them. The pellets are embedded in the concentrated during storing in such a way that they are isolated from each other and thus prevented from sticking together to form clusters. Thanks to the embedding concentrate, the pellets are subjected to a more or less uniform pressure from all sides which does not deform them. Thus, the mixture can be stored in a stockpile or in a bin until the pellets have hardened sufficiently. The concentrate is separated from the pellets by means of screening. The concentrate is returned to the balling operation and the pellets are either shipped to the blast furnace or stored for final hardening. The binder preferred for the Grangcold Pellett Process is portland-cement clinker, ground without the admixture of gypsum in order to avoid sulfur in the pellets as far as possible. Usually a 10% binder content is used. Two-thirds of the portland-cement clinker consist of lime and the rest is silica, alumina, and ferric oxide. Thus, self-fluxing or overbasic pellets are produced with this binder if the amount of silica in the concentrate used does not exceed 4%. The Grangcold Pellet Process was developed by the mineral Processing Laboratory of the Granges Co. Work started in 1963 with batch-scale tests. In 1966, a small pilot plant was put into operation in which 1800 tons of pellets were produced using 10% of rapid-hardening portland cement as a binder. Favorable results from a blast-furnace test with this batch led to the decision to erect a larger pilot plant which went into production in the summer of 1967. Since then, approximately 100,000 tons of cold-bonded pellets have been produced, mostly with 10% gypsum-free portland cement as a binder. Several full-scale blast-furnace trials have been performed with the pellets. The results of the trials indicate that the Grangcold pellets constitute a satisfactory blast-furnace feed. An industrial plant for the production of Grangcold pellets with a rated capacity of 1.5 million tpy is now under construction at the Granges Co.'s mine at Grangesberg. The plant will come into operation in the summer of 1970. Results from Laboratory Work Pellets made from iron-ore concentrate bonded with portland cement harden slowly and their handling is very critical until they have hardened enough to loose their stickiness. It is therefore especially important to study the progress of the hardening action and the factors influencing it. This is best achieved by investigating the relationship between the compressive strength of the cement-bonded pellets and the curing time under varied conditions.
