A MEMORABLE year has just passed in the field of coal utilization. Because of the war, oil conversions in industrial, commercial, and domestic installations have been made to the equivalent of 20,000,000 tons of coal. The war emergency has resulted in a great shifting of various types of coals to various markets. Huge tonnages of metallurgical-quality coals have been withdrawn from steam and domestic business and sent into the iron and steel industries. Marginal coals have replaced these coals in the steam and domestic field.

Precipitation of the phase Co3Ti (Cu3Au type) from a Co-5 pct Ti a11oy has been investigated using single-crystal X-ray diffraction techniques. Oscillation and transmission Laue patterns of specimens aged for short-time periods at 600" C indicate the formation of titanium-rich and titanium-poor zones coherent with the {100} matrix planes. Longer aging times at 600° C establish that the equilibrium phase also forms on the {100} matrix planes as platelets. These observations are corroborated by electron metallography; electron diffraction studies show the phase Co3Ti to be ordered. A probable sequence of the precipitation reaction is discussed. A previous publication by two of the present authors reported on the phase relations and precipitation in Co-Ti alloys containing up to 30 pct Ti.1 The results of this investigation established the existence of a new face-centered cubic inter metallic phase, ranging in composition from about 17.0 to 21.7 pct Ti at temperatures below 1000° C The decomposition of the fcc supersaturated solid solution was studied employing hardness and electrical resistivity measurements. The changes in hardness upon precipitation in alloys containing 3, 6, and 9 pct* Ti were found to be associated with an initial increase in hardness followed by a plateau and then a second, more pronounced hardness increase. Investigation of this behavior by electrical resistivity measurements suggested that two different kinetic processes were involved, which, when interpreted in terms of the kinetic relation,2-4 indicated that initial precipitation was in the form of thin plates. On continued aging, the plates impinged during the growth process. The general features of these findings have been confirmed by Bibring and Manenc,5 while, in addition, they report the phase to be ordered. The present investigation was undertaken to provide more definite information on the structural relationships between the precipitate and the matrix. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Single crystals of a (20-5 pct Ti alloy were prepared from the melt employing the Bridgman technique. Poly crystalline rod, 1/2 in. in diam, prepared from vacuum-melted material, was machined to 3/8- in. diam to remove any surface contamination that may have resulted from hot-working. The crystals were grown under a purified hydrogen atmosphere in high-purity alumina crucibles heated by induction. Considerable difficulty was encountered in attempting to grow monocrystals because of the high melting point of the alloy and the high solute concentration. However, one crystal about 6 in. long was obtained which was essentially a single crystal except for one or two very small grains around the periphery. The as-grown crystal was solution heat-treated for 24 hr at 1200°Cin a purified argon atmosphere and water-quenched. One-quarter-in. slices were taken from each end of the solution heat-treated crystal for chemical analyses, and the remainder of the crystal was mounted and oriented by the back reflection Laue Method. The chemical analysis of the crystal was as follows: Pct Ti Pct 0 Pct C Pct N Pct H Pet CO 5.29 0.08 0.004 0.002 0.0003 Balance By proper tilting of the crystal, it was possible to obtain slices 1/32 in. thick of [loo] and [110] orientation. The solution heat-treated crystal slices were sealed in silica capsules for the aging treatments, with titanium sponge placed at one end of the capsule to act as a getter. All slices were water-quenched from the aging temperatures, the capsules being broken under the water to ensure a rapid quench. Thinning of the slices for transmission X-ray studies was accomplished by a combination of mechanical and electrolytic techniques, the final thickness being about 0.1 mm. Laue patterns of the solution heat-treated crystal indicated that no strain was introduced by the thinning technique. ELECTRON METALLOGRAPHY After X-ray examination, the structural changes attending the precipitation were followed by examination of direct carbon replicas of polished and etched surfaces of the single-crystal slices and extracted phases. The earliest indication of significant structural change was observed after aging at 600°C The structure of a heavily etched, solution-treated crystal is shown in Fig. l(a). Aside from the etch pit pattern, no regularity of background structure is observed. On the other hand, in the background of the specimen heated for 500 hr at 600°C, the etching pattern shows a directionality indicating the influence of minute precipitate particles, Fig. l(b). An experimental study has been made of the solubility of nitrogen in liquid iron and liquid Fe-C alloys using levitation melting and a rapid quenching device. Iron alloy droplets were equilibrated with nitrogen gas at 1 atm pressure, quenched, and analyzed. Previous techniques for studying the Fe-C-N system have produced data which me in marked disagreement. This disagreement is due largely to errors caused by reaction between the molten alloy and the crucible material. With the levitation procedure, errors from this source have been eliminated and precise solubility data obtained for temperatures between 1450° and 1750°C. C-N interactions in molten iron have been expressed in terms of first- and second-order free energy, enthalpy, and entropy parameters. ALTHOUGH the solubility of nitrogen in iron base alloys is in general small, the effects of nitrogen on the properties of steel may be quite profound. For most purposes nitrogen in finished steels is undesirable, particularly in the low-carbon grades, since on cooling to room temperature the solubility limit of nitrogen in the steel may be exceeded and this can lead to embrittlement and loss of ductility on aging. On the other hand, nitrogen can improve the work-hardening properties and machinability of steels while in certain stainless grades nitrogen is important in order to stabilize the austenite phase. It is, therefore, desirable that one should be able to predict the solubility of nitrogen in liquid iron alloys. To do this, information is required concerning the interactions between nitrogen and the various alloying elements which may be present in liquid iron. There have been several investigations of these effects in recent years1"7 and the interactions between nitrogen and many elements dissolved in liquid iron are now known to a high degree of precision at steel-making temperatures. Unfortunately, a number of iron alloy systems which are of interest in steelmaking have been difficult to deal with by the experimental techniques generally used for this type of investigation. Among the most important of these are the Fe-C alloys. In the past, two methods have been widely used for determining nitrogen solubilities: the Sieverts' technique, in which the amount of nitrogen required to saturate a given mass of liquid metal at a particular temperature and pressure is measured volumetrically, and the sampled-bath technique in which liquid metal held in a crucible is equilibrated with a gas phase containing a known partial pressure of nitrogen, and samples drawn from the melt are quenched and analyzed. These two methods have been discussed in detail elsewhere.5,8 With the Sieverts' technique, errors may be introduced from the following sources: i) Gas adsorption on metal films which have condensed on the cooler parts of the reaction chamber. ii) Uncertainty in the determination of "hot volume" calibrations. iii) Crucible-melt interaction, particularly if a gaseous reaction product is formed or if the melt becomes contaminated with material from the crucible walls. The sampled-bath method may also suffer from errors due to reaction between the melt and the crucible material. In addition, there is the possibility that gas may be lost from the sample during solidification and cooling. In the present investigation, the solubility of nitrogen in liquid iron alloys has been studied by means of a new technique based on the use of levitation melting equipment and a rapid quenching device. In addition to the fact that problems of the type outlined above are avoided, this particular approach has the following advantages: i) The high-frequency current induces vigorous stirring within the levitated droplet so that gas-metal equilibration is rapidly attained. ii) The gas phase surrounding the melt can be changed very quickly and is easily controlled. For example, a droplet may be levitated in helium, deoxidized in hydrogen, equilibrated with nitrogen, and quenched, within a period of 15 min. ii) Melts can be readily under cooled or superheated, thus extending the effective temperature range of an investigation and allowing temperature-dependent data to be determined with a high degree of precision. Excellent reviews of levitation melting techniques and their application to physical-chemistry studies at high temperature have been published recently by Jenkins et al.,9 Peifer,10 and Rostron.11 In the present investigation a levitation melting technique has been used to obtain data for the solubility of nitrogen in pure liquid iron and liquid Fe-C alloys at temperatures between 1450° and 1750°C. COAL occupied a large place in the technical sessions of the Institute at its annual meeting for in addition to three sessions specifically de- voted to coal the two sessions on mine ventilation and the two on ground movement and subsidence, which are reported under their own headings, were primarily concerned with coal. The first session on coal was a joint one with the Iron and Steel Division, on Wednesday afternoon, with F. H. Crockard and J. R. Campbell presiding as joint chairmen and the latter actually officiating. The principal topic of discussion was G. S. Scott's paper "Evaluation of Coal for the Making of Blast- Furnace Coke," which has been published as T. P. 159. The author made a brief statement of its con- tents to start the discussion and the chairman, after briefly reviewing it himself, called on C. A. Meissner to start the discussion. He briefly reviewed the economic factors in the use of coal for coke-making, saying that not only .does the removal of 1 per cent of ash from the coal reduce the cost of pig iron 12 or 13c. per ton, but it also permits coke of satisfactory structures to be made from a coal which otherwise could not be used. He stressed the importance of uniformity in blast-furnace fuel and discussed the benefit of mixing different coals as raw material for the coke oven and cited experience with Illinois coals.

THE history of the production of sulfur from salt domes in Louisiana and Texas originated with the operations of the Union Sulphur Co. at Sulphur, La., followed by the Freeport Sulphur Co. at Bryanmound, Tex. Including the present development of Grande Ecaille by the Free-port Sulphur Co., which constitutes the tenth dome to be equipped for the production of sulfur in the Gulf Coast, less than 10 per cent of all the known domes have proved to contain sulfur in commercial quantities. The Grande Ecaille salt dome is in the tidal marsh of the Mississippi River delta in Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana. It is 10 miles southwest of the right descending bank of the river approximately 45 miles below the city of New Orleans and is within 4 miles of the shore line of the Gulf of Mexico.

AT the present time, the coal industry is greatly interested in any method or machine that will cut the cost of producing a ton of coal, while at the same time producing a product of quality and grade suitable to the customer. Comparatively new and, as yet, little known, auger mining is proving a profitable method of coal recovery. It may be used for the production of low-cost, high-quality coal with equal success from both the hard-to-mine seams, those with banded impurities and bad roof conditions, and the more easily mined seams as classified according to conventional mining methods. A number of units are now in operation and production information is available that should be of particular interest to coal operators and of general interest to anyone associated with the coal-mining industry. Auger mining refers to coal extraction with large size augers capable of drilling to great depths and having a high capacity. Consideration of the equipment and methods used in drilling an ordinary shot-hole will give a picture of auger mining on a smaller scale. At present, auger mining is used largely for recovery of coal from the highwall after strip mining becomes uneconomical because of the type and the thickness of the overburden which must be moved. Coal augers have many of the advantages of present continuous mining machines, along with many more. The four distinct operations of conventional mining-—cutting, drilling, shooting, and loading— are eliminated and replaced by the combined operation of boring and conveying of the coal. The coal recovery auger is an adaptation of the horizontal rock drill used for drilling shot-holes to shatter and loosen overburden in strip mining operations. During the war the Becker County Sand and Gravel Co. of Summersville, W. Va., experimented with drilling coal with 6 and 9-in. rock augers. The results led to the successive development of the 20, 24, 30 and the 36-in. machines, the latter having appeared in the coal fields within the past six months. The sources of energy dissipation for concentrated loadings on rock are considered in an attempt to account for the experimentally measured magnitude of the work required to break out a unit volume of rock from the free surface of an essentially semi-infinite medium. It is concluded that most of this work probably represents the elastic strain energy developed by the loading in a much larger volume of rock beneath the loaded region than the volume of the rock fragment broken out to the side of the loaded region. This strain energy is largely dissipated in the form of stress waves generated by the high rate of unloading produced by the propagating cracks. The energies associated with the formation of the new surfaces of the cracks and with the stress waves generated directly by the loading process are computed to be negligibly small. Possibilities for improving the utilization of energy to drill rod. subject to the geometrical limitations imposed by down-hole operation, are discussed. It is pointed out that any such possible improvements would probably have to be differential ones, since each rock configuration of more favorabIe loading geometry that can be created down the hole is accompanied by a complementary configuration of less favorable loading geometry. INTRODUCTION Dislodging each cubic inch of rock from the bottom of the hole by the action of a bit requires the expenditure of an amount of energy that varies from approximately 5,000 in.-lb to approximately 100,000 in.-lb, depending on the hardness of the rock, or, more technically, upon its fragmentation strength.1 In this paper we will discuss (I) why the energy expended in drilling is so large, (2) what happens to this energy upon completion of the drilling process, and (3) what are the possibilities for reducing the magnitude of the energy required to drill rock. DETERMINATION OF ROCK DRILLING ENERGY The volume of rock removed per unit time from the bottom of a hole of diameter D is evidently (7/4)D2R, where R is the rate of penetration of the bit. If P is the rate at which work is done by the bit on the rock at the bottom of the hole, the energy required to break out a unit volume of rock is given by: Ev =(4/p) P/D2R............(i) For rotary drilling, of either the rolling-cone or drag-bit varicty, P = 2pLN, where L is the torque resistance to rotation at the bottom of the hole and N is the rate of rotation of the bit. L is essentially the same as the torque measured at the rotary table only when drilling in shallow holes. The energies expended in rotating the drill string against the frictional resistance of the walls of the hole and and against the viscous drag of the drilling fluid are extraneous to the subject under consideration, although these may be much greater in magnitude than E, when drilling in a deep hole. For percussion drilling, P = fE where f is the percussion frequency and E is the work done on the rock per impact. The latter quantity can be both computed and measured for a percussion drilling machine. 2 (Under satisfactory drilling conditions, defined in terms of ranges of numerical values of certain dimensionless parameters, E is only 30 to 50 per cent less than the impact energy of the striker.2) Alternatively, E, may be measured directly by dropping chisels shaped like bit edges, backed by rigid weights, onto the surfaces of laboratory rock samples of effectively semi-infinite extent. Under these circumstances, essentially all of the impact energy is converted to work done on the rock, and the relationships among volume of rock broken out, chisel shape, impact energy and indexing distances can be obtained.3 The values of the energy required to break out a unit volume of rock under favorable circumstances are substantially in agreement for rotary drilling, percussion drilling and drop testing at atmospheric pressure. The energy per unit volume is a quantity of the order of magnitude of roughly twice the com-pressive strength of the rock as measured by a uniaxial loading test. The phrase "order of magnitude" in this paper means from about 1/3 as much to 3 times as much; i.e., the energy per unit volume may range from roughly the same up to several times

USBM designed, constructed, and operated an 18-in.-diam fluidized-bed combustor for highly caking coals to evaluate the method for possible application to power generation. In initial tests, combustion was carried on successfully, with carbon losses as low as 0.8%+ Coal ash was not satisfactory as a bed material, but mullite proved to be acceptable. Overall heat-transfer coeffients from the bed (-20 t 50 mesh mullite) to a water-cooled tube were about 75 Btuper hr-sq ft. Fluidized-bed combustion is being investigated by the U. S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) as a potentially cheaper method of firing power plant boilers. Lower combustion temperatures in fluidized beds—only 1400" to 1800°F-—should reduce fireside deposition and corrosion and nitrogen oxides production. Fluidized-bed combustion also offers possible advantages in the use of additives to control SO, emissions and amenability to processing of high-ash, high-moisture coals without special preparation. This paper describes development of a fluidized-bed combustor and the results of preliminary tests. Equipment and Procedure Fig. 1 shows the 8-ft-high combustor. A cone-shaped plate perforated by I/8-in.-diam holes supports the fuel bed and admits the fluidizing air; water passing through the 3/4-in. pipe extracts heat from the combustion bed. Fig. 2 is a flow diagram of the system. Coal is fed pneumatically to the base of the fuel bed. BACKGROUND Before addressing the above topic in any detail, it is pertinent to provide some background on Australia for those people who have not been there or who have a limited knowledge of our continent. Australia is approximately the size of the continental U.S.A. (excluding Alaska) covering an area of approximately 7 million square kilometres. It has a very dry climate which has led to a concentration of people in major cities scattered around the continents perimeter. Australia's population is currently approximately 15 million. Of the work force of 6.3 million, 72% work in tertiary industries, 20.2% in manufacture, 6.5% in agriculture and 1.3% in mining. Agriculture accounts for 46% of exports, mining for 31% and manufacturing for 23,. Economic activity is based on:- Agriculture This is capital intensive and covers extensive areas and is reliant on low cost farming. A.range of foods and fibres are produced with over 70% of production being exported. Such products are of course subject to the usual vagaries of world market demand and market access, particularly in regard to the operation of trade blocks such as the E.E.C. Mineral Resources A wide range of minerals and an abundance of iron ore, coal, gas and uranium resources provide an increasing volume of exports. However, Autralia's oil resources at present only supply approximately 70% of local requirements. Industry This is diverse and encompasses the processing of agricultural products and mineral ores as well as helping to supply the consumer and capital goods needs of the whole community. However, the small scale of local markets, the geographic isolation of Australia and relatively high wage costs have limited the scale of Australia's industry. Advanced technology has overcome some of these difficulties and high tariff and import quotas protect local producers from the full force of international competition. In 1980/81 Australia's Gross Domestic Product amounted to $130 billion with approximately 24% of this being devoted to investment. In the past decade Australia has experienced inflation rates ranging from 5% to 17% and only modest real growth rates ranging from 0.4% to 5% per annum. We have also experienced, as have many other industrialised nations, continuing wage and price increases. Unemployment presently stands at 6%. MINERAL DEVELOPMENT As the above figures indicate, Australia's continuing prosperity is very dependent on the mineral and agricultrual sectors of our economy. The dependence on these sectors is highlighted by the table below which indicates our position in a global context. This prominence in the world mineral production has largely been achieved in the last 15 - 20 years. In fact, in the early 1960's, Australia had only 2 major mining export centres, Broken Hill in New South Wales and Mt. Isa in Queensland. This growth is highlighted by the fact that in 1963, for example, we exported only 9 tonnes of iron ore and less than 4 million tonnes of coal. In 1980/81 we exported 75m. tonnes ',of iron ore (valued at $1,117m.) and 47m. tonnes of coal valued at $1,965m.). The growth in our mineral industry has come about because of a number of factors. Abundance of Mineral Resources We are particularly well endowed with mineral resources, as indicated below.

The rapid increase in reliability, the low cost of operation, the ready application of safety devices, and the growing availability of central-station power have made the question of installing a hoist of the electric type no longer debatable. Where adequate electric power is available, there are few cases where it would be advisable to install a steam or air hoist. The type of electrical equipment depends largely on the nature of the power supply, its capacity, and the form of the power contract under which power is purchased. In a large majority of cases, the available electric power is alternating current, three phase, 60 cycles. There is, however, considerable 25-cycle power in use; and in a few instances constant voltage direct current is the only power available for a small or an occasional medium-size hoist. Where a new hoist is to be installed, the designer of the mechanical parts can readily take care of the maximum stresses likely to be imposed by the motor. Where the hoist is already installed and operated by steam or air and it is desired to substitute an electric motor for the engine, a careful check should be made to determine the advisability of using the old mechanical parts. In most cases it is better to install a complete new hoist than to attempt to use old mechanical parts. A steam engine has a definite maximum torque, which the hoist has been designed to withstand, while a motor may be able to deliver momentary torques beyond the strength of the mechanical parts of the hoist. The selection of the proper type of electrical equipment can only be made after complete information is obtained and certain calculations made to determine the capacities required. There are several methods used in making hoist calculations, but no matter what method is utilized a fair degree of familiarity with hoists and hoisting conditions is necessary before an intelligent analysis and proper selection can be made. FOR the mineral industry, as for many others, the year 1944 brought to fruition the seeds planted in previous war years. Accomplishment in attaining ends in the production of minerals has given more time for the consideration of postwar problems, such as plans for resuming production for civilian uses and measures to prevent possible mass unemployment. The hectic atmosphere in production circles lessened during the latter half of 1943, conditions becoming static during 1944 as peak production rates were reached. Withdrawal of deferment of young men from the mining districts by Selective Service connotes that man power at the battlefronts became more important than the persistence of pressure for metal production. This is in contrast to the return of soldiers in 1943 to augment the labor ranks in the mining districts. The year ended in the midst of changing needs. Over-all metal production in the United States in 1944 will record a lessening, compared with the previous year owing to labor shortages which affected both development work and ore output.

A galvanic cell, using liquid MgCl2 or MgC12-CaC12 mixtures as the electrolyte, has been used to determine activities in Mg-A1 liquid alloys between 700' and 880°C. The incovporation of a chlorine electrode in the cell also allowed measurements to be made of the standard free energy of formation of MgCl2(l). The results are shown to be in good agreement with thermo-chetrlical values from the literature, and this is taken as evidence that the small, known solubility of magnesium in iMgCl2 introduces no significant error in galcanic cell measurements. Within experimental error, the activity coefficients and relative partial molar enthalpies at 800°C are shown to be represented by the following "subregular" solution equations: logy~~ =-0.68(1 -xMgj3 log yAL =-1.02(1 - XMf + 0.68(1 - XMf H.M = -4400(1 - %)3 / cal Mg 7Ag' HZ =-6600(1 - xA1)' + 4400(1 - XMf cal SCHNEIDER and toll' have used a transpiration technique to measure the vapor pressures of magnesium over Mg-A1 alloys between 544" and 594°C. amsstad,' however, has since suggested that the extrapolation to zero flow rate, used by these authors in interpreting their apparent pressure vs flow rate data, gives unreliable results. Rogers, Tomlinson, and Richardson,3 in interpreting the results of solution equilibria between Mg-A1 alloys and liquid MgC12, also considered the measurements of Schneider and Stoll to be unreliable and preferred to derive activities for the alloys from the earlier boiling point determinations of ~eit~ebel~ and the partial molar heats recommended by Kubaschewski and ~atterall.~ These latter heats were based substantially on the early calorimetric work of Kawa-kami but, unfortunately, his work on other systems has sometimes been found to be inaccurate.7 Rogers et al., in the above-mentioned paper,3 tentatively concluded that the most likely species responsible for the limited solubility (0.3 mole pct at 800°C) of magnesium in MgC12 were Mg° (neutral) and Mg2++. Two more recent studies8,9 have supported Mg2++ as the soluble species. In the present study, activities in Mg-A1 alloys have been determined by means of a galvanic cell involving liquid MgCl2 or MgC12CaCl, mixtures as the electrolyte. Since the reactive nature of magnesium precluded simple Faraday yield experiments, a chlorine electrode was incorporated in the cell in order that the performance of the cell could be checked by measurements of the heat and free energy of formation of MgC12. This procedure was considered necessary since it has been suggested1' that the solubility of a metal in a molten salt might introduce electronic conductivity; also, previous determinations of the standard electrode potential for MgC12 differed by as much as 70 mv11-13 EXPERIMENTAL Materials. Analyses of the materials used in preparing the alloys and the electrolyte mixtures are presented in Table I. The alloys were prepared by induction melting weighed amounts of the metals in a graphite crucible held under an argon atmosphere. Pure anhydrous magnesium chloride was prepared by heating the mixture MgCl, . 6H20 +NH4C1(1:1) to 650°C, followed by melting under dry argon. The melting point of the dry MgC12 was found by differential thermal analysis to be 714.8oC, which compares well with the accepted value of 714C.14 This agreement was taken to be an indication of the high purity of the dried salt. THOUGH recent months have seen a rapid decline in lead-smelting activity and consequent uncertainty as to the future, the first half of the year showed progress in keeping with similar activity in other metals. Demand for scrap increased and various lead-bearing materials found their way to plants producing secondary lead. Some of these materials introduced complications into normal smelting procedure and were the cause of many conferences among plant officials attempting to find the most satisfactory method of treatment. If a blast furnace is to do itself justice it must be run with an open charge. Troubles inevitably result when materials are added to a charge which tighten it up and pre- vent free burning of the coke and con- sequent rapid smelting with a clean hearth This fact has long been recognized by plants producing primary lead, but only recently only it received the attention it deserves.

CHARLES E. WILSON'S second quarterly report "Meeting Defense Goals" was encouraging on the outlook for the mining industry, as prolonged demand for minerals seems assured; but for the individual engineer things are not so rosy. Ten percent of the gross national product is going for defense but the gross national product has been increased by 9 pct since the national emergency was declared apparently a commendable rate of progress. The increased production does not seem to have had the stabilizing effect on prices it should and housewives have been revising domestic budgets upward on a quarterly basis. Government economists have reached the conclusion that more taxes and wage and salary freezing are necessary to counteract inflation.

The minerals barite (BaSO4 barium sulfate) and witherite (BaCO3 barium carbonate) are the chief commercial sources of the element barium and its compounds whose many uses are nearly hidden among the technical complexities of modern industrial processes and products. Barite, the major ore mineral, is extremely vital to the petroleum industry which in 1973 consumed at least 80% of the world's produc¬tion of 4.4 million tons as a major ingredient of the heavy fluid, called mud, that is circulated in rotary drilling of oil and gas wells. The re¬maining 20% of the barite production was consumed chiefly in the manufacture of barium chemicals and glass and as a pigment, filler, and extender. Barite occurs throughout much of the world and is available from three major geologic types of deposits-vein and cavity fill¬ing, residual, and bedded-in sufficient quantity at competitive prices to meet current demands. The world's demand for barite is expected to increase, and geologic circumstances are favor¬able for the discovery of new deposits of com¬mercial value. Witherite is much less common and abun¬dant than barite, although it is more desirable in many ways as a raw material for the pro¬duction of barium chemicals. The United States has not produced witherite since about 1950; England is currently the chief producer of witherite. End Uses Most of the world's barite production since 1926 has been used as a weighting agent for the muds circulated in rotary drilling of oil and gas wells. The muds fundamentally are mixtures of water, clay, and barite in different proportions that vary according to local reservoir condi¬tions. Muds with a specific gravity as great as 2.5 are used. The mud is pumped down the hollow drill stem, passes through the bit at the bottom of the hole, and rises to the surface in the space between the drill stem and the wall of the hole. In the course of this circulation the drill bit is cooled, cuttings are removed, the drill stem is lubricated, the walls of the hole are sealed, and the hydrostatic head of the column of weighted fluid helps to confine high oil and gas pressures. The latter feature aids in prevention of gushers, thus reducing both environmental pollution and waste of oil and gas resources as well as conserving the natural reservoir pressure for greater production and rate of recovery of the products contained in the rocks. Barite is particularly well suited for drilling mud because it is clean, easy to handle, soft (nonabrasive), heavy, virtually inert chemi¬cally, and relatively inexpensive compared to many other available heavy materials. Barite is used in the manufacture of glass in continuous tanks. The addition of barite ho¬mogenizes the melt and gives greater brilliance and clarity to the finished glass. Ground barite, both unbleached and bleached by sulfuric acid, is a common industrial filler, extender, and weighting agent. The rubber in¬dustry is a major consumer of barite as a filler. Barite also is added to bristolboard, heavy printing paper, playing cards, rope finishes, brake linings, clutch facings, plastics, and li¬noleum, to name but a few uses. Bleached barite has long been an extender in white lead paint because of its weight. The low index of refraction of barite, however, makes its ability to cover marks poorer than some other sub¬stances, but its low capacity for absorption of oil is a good feature. Off-color or unbleached barite can be used as a filler in colored paints. In the construction industry, some lump barite is used in concrete aggregate to weight down pipelines buried in marshy areas and to shield nuclear reactors. Because barite absorbs gamma radiation well, its use reduces the amount of expensive lead shielding otherwise

They were prepared by a committee of the Society designated as Committee B-1 on Copper Wire. The committee consisted of eleven members; representatives of five manufacturers of -copper wire, of four manufacturers of electrical apparatus, and of two firms of consulting and contracting engineers. The members of the committee were designated by the officials of the companies to act as their representatives in the committee.

Fletcher Mill is located in the southern part of the New Lead Belt in Southeastern Missouri, in the northwestern part of Reynolds County. Shaft sinking began in July, 1964. The mill went on stream in February, 1967, and reached the designed rate of 5,000 tons per day in July, 1968. The ore occurs approximately 1,000 feet below the surface as disseminated deposits of galena, sphalerite and chalcopyrite. There is no oxidation within the ore body and dissemination is not fine enough to present liberation problems with a normal grind. Mining is by the room and pillar method with rubber-tired diesel- propelled drilling and loading equipment. The ore is dumped through a 27-inch square grizzly into a 5,000-ton pocket. The underground primary crusher is automatically fed by a vibrating feeder and discharges directly into skip measuring bins. Hoisting is automatic, in balance, with 8. 5-ton skips dumping into a 1,000-ton mill bin. MILL The concentrator is a 5, 000 tons-per-day single section plant equipped to produce lead, zinc and copper concentrates. Contained under 35, 347 square feet of roof, without fine ore storage or remote crushing, and with sufficient automation to be operated by one man, the plant is compact, unique, and efficient in operation. THE INFORMATION AVAILABLE on the rolling characteristics of the precious metals-gold, silver, the platinum metals and their alloys-is incomplete and mostly from scattered sources. In the present paper an effort has been made to assemble and correlate it and to fill in some of the gaps that exist. GENERAL ROLLING CHARACTERISTICS SOME EFFECTS OF IMPURITIES Gold and its alloys are generally considered to be hot short and hence are usually rolled cold. Cold rolling of the yellow, green, and pink gold alloys. Which customarily contain gold, silver, copper and zinc and frequently some nickel as well, introduces no new problems since reasonable reductions are quite feasible and the alloys show little tendency to fire crack in subsequent annealing. The white gold alloys. which usually contain little or no silver and 10 pct or more nickel, are very susceptible to fire cracking1 and hence wrist he given relatively heavy reductions, i. e., 8-10 pct or more per pass with a total reduction of about 50 pct between anneals, to minimize this tendency. In addition, it is preferable to keep the bar as flat as possible during rolling. 8.5-1. Bucket Line Dredge. INTRODUCTION. The modern bucket-line dredge for mining placer deposits is a combined floating excavating machine and a gravity concentration system. Material is excavated at the forward end by the buckets, elevated, washed and screened, concentrated for recovery of valuable mineral, and discharged off the stern as coarse and small fractions. The end product is a concentrate consisting either of the valuable mineral(s) and associated heavy minerals, which are taken to a treatment plant on shore; or in the case of gold, a clean amalgam ready for retorting. The bucket-line dredge may be adapted for purposes other than mining for valuable mineral by installing, in lieu of a concentrating system, machinery for pumping all of the solids ashore in a pulp, or for producing washed gravel in selected size fractions of which all or a selected fraction is pumped to disposal areas on shore or into side barges. The two principal types of bucket-line dredges designed for mining are: 1) those having an inclined belt conveyor stacker to discharge the coarse fraction of washed tailing well astern of the hull, and sluices to discharge the sand fraction (Fig. 8.5-1), and 2) those having only sluices for discharge of all tailing astern. Use of the latter type has been confined, with few exceptions, to mining cassiterite-bearing deposits in Malaysia and at sea off Indonesia. Small dredges having only flumes for washing and concentrating all material dug by the buckets have been used for mining shallow stream valley deposits. GENERAL ARRANGEMENT. The general arrangement of a modern bucket-line dredge for mining tin, with a primary concentrating plant on board, is shown in Fig. 8.5-2. The hull and superstructure of most dredges are fabricated of structural steel; wood also has been used for both small and large dredges with complete satisfaction.
