THE oxide scale that forms upon magnesium at elevated temperatures is nonprotective in the sense that the rate of oxidation is constant and thus does not decrease with the growth of the scale as it does with other common metals. This generality was first stated by Pilling and Bedworth1 and has been verified by Suzuki2 and by Scheil.3 Pilling and Bedworth argued that the nonprotective characteristic could be predicted from the fact that magnesium oxide occupies less space than does the metal from which it springs, wherefore the scale is not expected to cover the metal so completely as to exclude all direct access to the atmosphere. Linear oxidation is thought by Scheil to be common to all cases where the reaction occurs at the oxide-metal interface. According to Suzuki,2 the product of high-temperature oxidation in the air is MgO contaminated with no more than traces of a nitride. When the metal is allowed to burn freely a fume composed of cubic crystals of Mg04 is given off. Delavault5 observed that excrescences form upon liquid magnesium and alloys in the course of oxidation. Beyond this it is known that the use of atmospheres containing small quantities of sulphur dioxide6 or carbon dioxide serve to retard the oxidation of solid magnesium and that beryllium7and calcium8 minimize the oxidation of molten magnesium exposed to the air. Many studies have been devoted to the nature and rates of "protective" oxidation, as exemplified by the cases of copper and iron, wherein the rate is characteristically parabolic. The theory of parabolic oxidation is well developed.9 Linear oxidation, on the other hand, has received but little attention and the theories proposed by Pilling and Bedworth and by Scheil have yet to withstand careful examination. There exists no comprehensive survey of the high-temperature oxidation of magnesium (or of any other metal that exhibits linear oxidation) over a broad range of temperature, under a variety of atmospheric conditions and covering a large group of alloys. It has been the purpose of the present investigation to provide such a survey, with the object of gaining a fuller understanding of linear oxidation, especially as applied to magnesium. THE structures of quenched eutectoid and hypereu-tectoid Fe-Cu alloys have been examined by X-ray diffraction and by optical and electron microscopy. The relevant portion of the Fe-Cu phase diagram is given in Fig. 1. Several values have been reported for the solubility of copper in a Fe at the eutectoid temperature, including 1.4 wt pct by orton' and 2.13 wt pct by Wreidt and Darken.2 Alloys containing 4.8 and 7.5 wt pct Cu have been prepared from two batches of Ferrovac E iron (0.005C and 0.013C) and electrolytic tough pitch copper (99.90 Cu). Specimens of dimensions 0.8 by 0.8 by 0.1 in. were cut from hot-rolled material, austenitized, and quenched into brine at 25°C. Similar specimens were also cooled in the furnace, after a short soaking treatment at 1100°C, at a rate estimated to be 10°C per min in the temperature range of 900" to 500°C. X-ray diffractometry was performed on quenched and on furnace-cooled bulk specimens using iron radiation. Only a bcc phase could be detected in all samples. Lattice parameters were calculated from measurements on four lines, made up of two resolved high-angle doublets. Comparisons were made against a silicon standard. Results are shown in Table I. Based on X-ray diffraction studies of a series of alloys of lower copper concentrations, orton' estimated that the tattice constant of a Fe at 25°C increases 0.0014A per wt pct Cu in solution. Extrapolating Norton's data, it may be concluded that all copper was retained in solution in the brine-quenched 4.8 pct Cu alloy, and that approximately 5 pct Cu was also held in solution on quenching the 7.5 pct Cu alloy. Typical microstructures of brine-quenched specimens, as observed by optical microscopy, are shown in Figs. 2 and 3. Precipitation of the E phase (copper-rich) occurred along the y grain boundaries on quenching the 7.5 pct Cu alloy, rendering them readily detectable in the microstructure, Fig. 3. The original boundaries in the 4.8 pct Cu specimens were gener- ally not discernible, however. This indicates that the z phase which was seen in the higher-copper alloy was probably of proeutectoid origin. Thin foils for transmission electron microscopy were obtained from bulk specimens by spark machining to 0.006 in. thickness, followed by electrolytic polishing. J. L. JONES,* Pittsburgh, Pa.-If a nickel anode is cast under commer-cial conditions, will it contain nickel oxide? Will the nickel oxide affect the rate of corrosion in a double sulfate solution; or will the nickel oxide dissolve in a double sulfate solution? I would also like to ask whether a 98 per cent. pure nickel anode will corrode as fast as a 96 per cent. nickel anode; whether electrolytic nickel will corrode less rapidly than nickel containing a small amount of carbon; and whether the materials some-times used in coating molds for casting nickel anodes will affect the rate of corrosion of the anode? In other words, whether an electrically non conducting coating is likely to be present that will prevent the nickel anode from corroding rapidly. JOHN F. THOMPSON.-The nickel oxide will not dissolve in the double sulfate solution, as far as we know. We do not make the ordinary nickel anode of commerce, but we supply nickel to the nickel anode makers. Those makers almost invariably buy a high-carbon nickel shot, ranging around 0.45 per cent. carbon. In their process, they even further, car-burize it so as to get nickel that will melt easily and be fluid enough to fill the mold, so that the ordinary cast anode on the market is unquestion-ably oxide free. The only time that such an anode will have oxide will be through an error in melting. Some cupola makers of anodes have had trouble with oxidation, but as a rule the anodes are thoroughly carburized; so much so that they probably carry a couple of per cent. of carbon of which around. 1.6 per cent. is graphite.

Mobile cranes on tires are perhaps the most important accessory in truck-haulage pits. They usually are of 20-ton capacity at short radius and with outriggers but have considerable overload capacity. Standard booms are 30 ft but have 10-ft extensions with which they are usually operated. Cranes have two engines, both originally gasoline, but 150-hp Diesel engines have been found more reliable for the propulsion motor, the 100-hp gasoline motors being retained for hoisting. Pro- visions are made for dropping the ballast counter- weight to reduce axle weights to legal limits for highway travel. The weights are carried on a regular truck or are transported on an extra trailer axle behind the crane. Tractors-Probably equalling the cranes in usefulness are the track-laying tractors which are used to prepare roads and other surfaces, to clean up at the shovel, and for dozing on stripping dumps. A new type of tractor mounted on rubber tires has been tried out on the Mesabi Range for the past year and a half. The advantage of this design is its mobility which makes it capable of taking care of the spill at the shovel and then running to the dump to clean up. Alternating between these two jobs, it relieves heavy tractors that can be used to better advantage on heavier work that does not require so much traveling. This tractor can travel at speeds of 12 to 13 mph and is designed to facilitate repair of the expendable parts. Weaknesses have developed in the internal construction which have seriously marred the performance record of this unit, but when used within its capacity it is quite successful.

PRESIDENT DWIGHT'S invitation to be a guest of the American Institute of Mining and Metal-lurgical Engineers was the first of the subsequently very numerous invitations to dinner I have received from my American friends. When I received his telegram I had not yet been even formally appointed Ambassador. I cannot tell you how deeply I appreciated it. It was a hearty welcome in returning to your country which has been for me a second home and it came from the American mining brotherhood which has been my second family.There are two distinct periods of learning in life. The first one are the years spent in school where we learn many things we after-wards forget; the second one are the years of prac-tical apprenticeship which engrave indelible signs in a man's character and shape his life. These latter years I spent in the United States and they have influenced the whole course of my life. I owe very much to my American friends who trained me. The earliest was Prof. Robert Peele, of Columbia University. At the Daly West mine, in Park City, Utah, he curbed my futuristic English spell-ing and had a hard time at it. Prof. James F. Kemp taught me that geology is a guess work just as unre-liable as the prediction of international events; he taught me also that a frank, honest and loyal character will lead a man equally straight through a mining report and through public life.

9.1-1. Description and Basic Function. A conventional railroad haulage system for a surface mine performs the function of transporting the ore and/or waste out of the pit to a crushing plant or dump. Trains consisting of a locomotive and gondola or side-dump care suitable for loading by power shovels are used. Gondola cars are restricted to hauling ore as a rotary dumper is required to unload them. Side-dump cars are more versa- tile, being satisfactory for carrying both ore and waste; but because of their additional dumping mechanism they are likely to be more expensive to maintain (12). Also they weigh up to two times as much as a flat-bottom car of the same capacity, and, therefore, fewer cars can be hauled per train. Standard-gauge track is most commonly used. Track systems incorporate temporary track of low quality in areas where moves are frequent and permanent track of high quality on main lines. Rail haulage enabled open pit mining to establish its reputation, for efficiency. Prior to World War II it was the principal type of transportation used in large pits. Other successful surface mine haulage methods have been developed since that time. These have served to supplement railroad transportation, permitting selection of a method that is best adapted to the peculiar requirements of each mining project. 9.1-2. General Applicability and Controlling Physical Conditions. For handling rough rock, the shovel-train system is unexcelled (6). The ideal application is in a physically large, but not excessively deep, open pit mine from which the coarsely blasted ore and waste must be transported distances in excess of three miles. If, in addition, a high production rate is to be maintained, railroad haulage will probably afford a lower cost per ton transported than will any other haulage method. Relatively gentle

The conventional wire saw, introduced in the slate district of Pennsylvania by the Bureau of Mines in 1927, and used thereafter with remarkable success, consists of a three-strand steel cable having a diameter of 93/16 or 54 in. The equipment, methods used, and accomplishments have been described in previous reports.'-I Similar wire saws have been used extensively in Europe, in quarries and in shaping blocks and slabs. During the period 1932-1937, competition in European marble quarries was keen, prices were declining, and orders were not abundant. When orders were received, there was generally an urgent call for speedy delivery. Because of the diversification of demands, it was impossible to maintain in stock marbles of the color, size, and thickness called for, therefore the material generally had to be fabricated after the order was received. The wire saw enabled stone mills to fill such orders promptly. With skillful handling, 7/8-in. slabs could be cut accurately and rapidly with this equipment. It was found, however, that, as the three-strand wire became worn, the cutting speed dropped rapidly and the cut became less accurate. To overcome these difficulties the junior author of this paper, after much experimentation, developed a new type of wire consisting of a single ribbon-shaped strand, twisted as shown in Fig. I. To ensure straight sawing, the twist of the ribbon is reversed from right to left and vice versa every 25 ft. The reversal of the twist is shown in Fig. 2. This is not a new feature; it has been used to advantage with the three-strand wire both in Europe and America for several years. However, some difficulties arise in splicing the three-strand reverse-twist wire, and the claim is made that cutting is less accurate as the wire becomes worn. To make an endless belt, the ends of the single-strand wire are brazed together with Pyrophyllite is a hydrous aluminum silicate (A1²Si4O10(OH)²)1 that, occurs in both the foliated and the massive forms. The foliated variety resembles talc in that it has a greasy feel, a pearly luster, perfect basal cleavage, and usually is white, although in some deposits apple green, gray, brown, russet, and nearly black specimens may be found. The massive deposits of pyrophyllite yield pearl gray to light tan aggregates, some of which are so friable that they may be crushed with the hands into a fine gritty powder. Frequently specimens of the massive variety are studded with crystals of radial structure. The mineral has a specific gravity of about 2.7 and a hardness of 1 on Mohs' scale.' The chemical composition of commercial pyrophyllite reflects the mineralogy of the deposits, which, according to Stuckey12 contain pyrophyllite and quartz, together with chloritoid, sericite, and a few other minerals of negligible importance. The latter, he says, ('are noticed in but small quantities to the extent they might occur as accessory constituents of an igneous rock or as products of regional metamorphism or weathering. . . . Quartz is abundant everywhere except in the very best grades of pyrophyllite." Analyses of specimens from several deposits are listed in Table 1, showing that the silica content varies from 57 to 73 per cent and the alumina from 22 to 33 per cent. Oxides of iron and the alkaline metals are collectively present, with one exception, to an extent of about 1 to 1.5 per cent. Sources At present, North Carolina is the only commercial source of pyrophyllite, although the mineral has been found in small quantities in many parts of the world. The North Carolina deposits are in the "Carolina Slate Belt," which traverses the center of the state in a southwesterly direction. This belt varies from 8 to 50 miles in width. A study of the structures arising from the decomposition of the ß solid solutions in the Cu-Zn and the Cu-A1 systems is of peculiar interest in the study of the mechanism of precipitation from solid solutions. It is possible in these alloys, by varying the composition within the ß field, to precipitate from the same basic lattice phases having different lattice structures. It has been rather generally assumed heretofore that the type of structure originating from the decomposition of a solid solution— the Widmanstätten structure—-is determined by the lattice structure of the parent solid solution alone. In the first paper of this series1 evidence was advanced which threw doubt upon this hypothesis; but definite proof of the correctness or incorrectness of the hypothesis should be forthcoming from a study of these alloys, for if the structures originating, for example, from the precipitation of the a phase from ß and of the ? phase from the ß in the Cu-Zn system should be shown to be crystallographically different, the hypothesis would necessarily be held as definitely disproved. Furthermore, the newer proposal enunciated in the first paper of this series—that the origin of the Widmanstätten structure lies in a cooperation between the lattice of the parent solid solution and that of the precipitate-—which at present seems the only a1ternative hypothesis, would in such an event be given added weight. The work here reported shows that the Widmanstätten structures originating in the precipitation of the a phase from the ß and in the precipit'at.ion of the y phase from the y in the Cu-Zn system are indeed crystallographically different; and incidentally presents some new descriptive information on the Widmanstätten structure from a more general point, of view.

(Read at Amenia Meeting, October, 1877.) AT the Wilkes-Barre Meeting of the Institute, Dr. J. Lawrence Smith, in the course of his remarks on some peculiarities in the composition of irons, alluded to the so-called " buckshot" iron, and exhibited a specimen of this material. He said that when the small granules, or shot, were separated from the mass, they could be flattened under the hammer, and inferred that these particles had been decarburized by the blast before sinking into the hearth of the furnace, and thus we had the exceptional production of wrought iron in the blast furnace. I have recently obtained a characteristic specimen of this variety of iron from one of the furnaces at Orbisona, Pa. Considerable uncertainty existed as to its true nature and the conditions of its production. Its weight seemed to preclude the idea that it contained much or any slag, yet its lack of strength indicated that it was not homogeneous cast iron. At times considerable quantities had been produced, which could only be utilized by charging in the furnace and remelting. The specimen, on the freshly fractured surface, appeared to consist of flattened globules of iron cemented together by a bluish material which one would naturally suppose to be slag, and qualitative examination for lime strengthened this supposition. It was quite difficult to obtain drillings, as there was a tendency to split in several directions as soon as pressure was applied ; but enough was obtained to undertake quantitative determinations. They were found to consist of two portions-one attracted by the magnet, and the other not. By repeated separation the magnetic portion was found to be 94.44 per cent., and the non-magnetic 5.56 per cent. Analyses of these gave the following results :

(written discussion ?).-Firebricks intended for, the same purpose, but supplied by different manufacturers, may be of entirely different clays, contain different proportions of flint, calcined and plastic clays; the particles may vary widely in size; the water used to make the brick will vary; the pressure in molding will vary, depend-ing on whether the brick is hand made or power pressed; and the degree of burning in the same kiln will differ. These variables affect the melting point and the strength of the brick when heated. An important property, of a firebrick is its ability to resist heat and, at the same time, weight or load without serious deformation. The soft-ening point and the melting point of a firebrick may be several hundred degrees apart, and two bricks may show considerable difference in their softening points, but the melting points may be approximately the same. Bricks are not usually employed at temperatures close to their melting points. If they must withstand very high temperatures, the firebrick is discarded and a brick of more refractory material is used. Under these conditions' it is doubtful whether the determination of the melting point of a brick has much practical value. If the determination of the melting point is necessary, the test should he made on a portion of the original brick and not on a specially prepared sample. A small triangular pyramid with a base about 1 1/2 in. and 3 in. high can be sawed from the corner of the brick with a thin-bladed car-borundum wheel, without injuring or destroying the size of particles, the bond, or degree of burning of the original brick. This specimen can then he compared with standard Seger cones or tested by any other method desired.

The Crandon deposit, located in northern Wisconsin, is a 65.8 million ton Precambrian volcanogenic massive sulfide deposit which averages 1.4% copper and 5.8% zinc. The deposit is classic in origin, mineralogy and shape. Comprehensive understanding of the geology of both the deposit and the project site has been fundamental to the credibility and success of project feasibility studies and regulatory permit preparation. Mine development in the current investment and regulatory climate requires thorough and timely application of geologic tools. From 1977-1980 geologic activities were focused on the typical objectives of orebody delineation, reserve estimation, depositional geology, and general site investigation. Results from these programs formed the basis for the project's preliminary feasibility studies. Since 1981 further geologic investigations have provided criteria for project design, site management, and operational permitting. Activities have included mine entry position definition drilling, developing geostatistical reserve modeling, large diameter (150 mm) core drilling for mill pilot samples, rock mechanics testing, and evaluation of the glacial overburden/deposit geohydrology for computer simulation.

The North Texas district, as herein defined, includes the counties of Archer, Baylor, Clay, Cooke, Foard, Hardeman, Knox, Montague, Wichita, and Wil-barger. This area covers generally the crest and south flank of a system of buried mountains known as the Red River uplift. The oil and gas accumulations along this feature are in traps, which, although localized by structures incident to the regional uplift, are usually modified by stratigraphic changes in the sediments. Excepting the fields in southeastern Baylor, southern Archer, and southwestern Clay Counties, all the fields within the district are on this Red River uplift. These exceptions, which have the same type of oil and gas accumulation as the other fields, are on the extreme north end of the Bend arch, which is a broad anticline plunging northward from the Llano uplift in central Texas to Archer County. The larger part of past oil and gas production has come from Pennsylvanian strata, with less important amounts from the Permian, and minor but increasingly important quantities from the Ordovician. Developments during 1940 The encouraging outcome of exploration and development in Montague and Cooke Counties and generally greater activity throughout the district resulted in the drilling of some 1700 wells during 1940, about 350 more wells than were drilled in 1939. Approximately 1250 of these tests were completed as oil wells. Production likewise increased during I940 to the extent of 8 million barrels more than the 25 1/2 million barrels produced in 1939. In spite of this large increase in production, known oil reserves again increased substantially. As is usually characteristic of this district, the new reserves were from a large number of fields, none of which were of such magnitude as to be important to the oil industry. Nevertheless, the Fargo field, Wilbarger County, deserves mention as one of the more important discoveries in this district during 1940. Following seismic surveys, the hmerada Petroleum Corporation located its No. I Goodpasture in sec. 35, block IS, H. and T. C. R. R. Co. survey, and drilled it to a total depth of 6717 ft. This well was completed in July 1940 through perforations in the casing from a pay between 3230 and 3252 ft. for an initial production of 241.5 bbl. on an 8-hr. pumping test. Other potential producing horizons were found in the Pennsyl-vanian at depths of 3960 to 3995 ft., 4208 to 11.234 ft., 4407 to 4422 ft., and in the Ordovician at 6300 ft. Wells completed to date in the several Pennsylvanian horizons have an average daily potential of 600 bbl. of oil. Although no wells have yet been completed in the Ellenburger dolomite (Ordovician), the discovery well swabbed I5 bbl. per hour from this formation before plugging back for completion in an upper horizon.

Nevertheless, the Fargo field, Wilbarger County, deserves mention as one of the more important discoveries in this district during 1940. Following seismic surveys, the hmerada Petroleum Corporation located its No. I Goodpasture in sec. 35, block IS, H. and T. C. R. R. Co. survey, and drilled it to a total depth of 6717 ft. This well was completed in July 1940 through perforations in the casing from a pay between 3230 and 3252 ft. for an initial production of 241.5 bbl. on an 8-hr. pumping test. Other potential producing horizons were found in the Pennsyl-vanian at depths of 3960 to 3995 ft., 4208 to 11.234 ft., 4407 to 4422 ft., and in the Ordovician at 6300 ft. Wells completed to date in the several Pennsylvanian horizons have an average daily potential of 600 bbl. of oil. Although no wells have yet been completed in the Ellenburger dolomite (Ordovician), the discovery well swabbed I5 bbl. per hour from this formation before plugging back for completion in an upper horizon.

Chemical squeeze treatments have been used to provide temporary relief from certain production problems. The chemical fracture-squeeze technique, combining the effects of a fracturing treatment and a squeeze operation, has been more successful than conventional squeeze operations. Knowledge derived from well stimulation and reservoir engineering research provides a means for predicting the theoretical effective life of such a treatment. Analysis of theoretical equations and concepts developed allows selection of improved treatment techniques based on specific formation conditioins. Theory used in this analysis was developed as an extension of previous electrical model studies made to establish the expected flow and pressure profiles adjacent to a fracture system. The chemical fracture squeeze technique can be utilized in the economic application of corrosion inhibitors, emulsion breakers and paraffin and scale inhibitors. Application of this technique is shown to be effective. The slow return rate of injected chemicals, controlled by the resultant flow profiles and treatment variables, permits extended periods of chemical effectiveness. Results of field treatments are given, showing that the concepts outlined above for chemical fracture-squeeze treatments are valid and that applying this technique can help alleviate many current production problems. INTRODUCTION Much progress has been made in the last 10 to 15 years in developing chemicals for use in stimulating wells, maintaining production and protecting well equipment from damage due to corrosion. Not too many years ago, some wells seemed to dry up or wear out. In many cases the wells were produced as long as possible without any attempt at maintaining productivity. Even with the advent of new and better stimulation techniques, a rapid decline in production was observed. Methods of removing and, in some instances, preventing damage have been developed. Among thosc factors responsible for uneconomical production are scale, paraffin, corrosion, bacteria, water blocks and emulsions. Soluble scale-prevention chemicals have been developed1,2 that can be placed in a formation along with frac- turing sand. As the water produces back across this bed, the solid material dissolves slowly and can provide long-term protection from scale. However, bottom-hole temperature and salinity of produced water vary widely and both these factors influence the rate of solubility. Scale inhibitor composition is also a controlling factor. Some of the solid material may be crushed, increasing the surface area exposed to water and increasing the rate at which it dissolves. Some of the material may never be contacted by water and can be lost. However, this type of treatment has been very successful in many instances and has helped maintain economical production for extended periods of time. Liquid scale inhibitors, which are more widely applicable and more stable, have been developed in recent years; however, because they are liquids, their use has been restricted to treatment down the annulus, using metering pumps to provide proper concentrations in the produced fluid. This has prevented use in wells containing packers, in dually completed wells and in gas-lift and flowing wells. Wells that operate with an open annulus may also experience severe corrosion problems due to introduction of oxygen. Paraffin inhibitors3 have been developed that can be fractured into a well as particulate solids to be slowly dissolved in the produced fluid. These materials are not usually effective in wells with a bottom-hole temperature in excess of 120F since solubility rate may be too fast if that temperature is exceeded or if aromatic content of the oils is unusually high. Corrosion inhibitors have been developed that can be fractured' into a well for long-term feedback, but development of a material with proper solubility or feed rate has been difficult. Corrosion inhibitors are available in many different forms. Liquids have been lubricated down the annulus or sticks or pellets dropped down tubing. Inhibitor squeeze treatments5 devcloped a few years ago led to development of inhibitors with particularly strong film-forming properties.6,7 This technique basically involves displacing a highly concentrated solution of the inhibitor into the formation through the tubing. Kerver and Hanson8 studied the adsorption properties of inhibitors on various types of formations. They showed that, even though the inhibitor was displaced radially into the true permeability, it could be produced back for a long period of time because of slow desorption from the rock. Methods developed for monitoring the return of these inhibitors generally have established 1 to 6 months as the effective limit before retreatment is necessary.9 Inhibitors displaced into the interstices of the formation sometimes cause emulsions that either hamper production or cause treating problems on the surface.

BY COMBINING the sessions on reduction and refining of copper, lead and zinc it was possible to devote an entire day to nonferrous metallurgy. Four interesting papers were presented at the morning session and four more in the afternoon. In the discussion of papers on copper, F. R. Pyne acted as chairman, with H. M. Shepard as vice-chairman, whereas for those on lead and zinc, F. F. Colcord acted as chairman, with C. R. Hayward as vice-chairman. The paper by P. D. I. Honeyman on the smelting of raw concentrates in the reverberatory furnace was presented by Mr. Pyne and discussed by Messrs. Mazany and Hayward. The interesting paper by E. S. Bardwell, com- paring the use of various fuels in copper-refining furnaces at Great Fails, Mont., was presented by Mr. Shepard and discussed by Messrs. Boggs, Gronningsater and Hayward. That by R. G. Knickerhocker, describing the stationary basic copper converter at Messina, Transvaal, was presented by Mr. Pyne, together with a written discussion by c. R. Kuzell, of the United Verde Copper co. It was an interesting illustration of how well-known processes may sometimes be modified to fit into unusual conditions.

THE primary objective in laying track in panel sections is to reduce the number of track laborers required. This is possible because the work is mechanized. Moreover, because the work is mechanized and each of the operations needs only a few men, and each is self-contained, the work can be carried on at night as well as in daylight; therefore, the method provides a means of preparing tracks on more than one shift. The laying of tracks in open pits and quarries in panel sections is not new but new methods have been made possible by the introduction of new types of equipment. The purpose of this paper is to describe the methods that are followed in' the Morenci open pit. GENERAL MINING OPERATIONS Full-scale ore production at Morenci is about 50,000 tons daily. The normal yearly output of ore and waste is 32,000,000 tons, of which 30,000,000 tons is handled by rail haulage. This requires the building of approximately 47 miles of loading and other temporary tracks during a 12 months' period (Fig I). Broken ore and waste, is loaded., into 90-ton capacity dump cars with 5-cu-yd full-revolving electric shovels. Shovel banks are uniformly 50 ft high:. They are blasted- with churn drill holes, and the broken material from a blast is loaded out with two shovel cuts, the first one being called (locally) the "splatter" cut and the second one the "clean-up" or "face-up" cut. When a shovel is making its clean-up cut, the loading track is about 70 ft from the toe of the bank and, under normal conditions, a bank is blasted against it without removing the track. It is thus evident that each track is used for two shovel cuts before relocation is necessary, inasmuch as a single position serves for both the clean-up cut prior to blasting and for the splatter cut following the blast. The normal advance of a solid bench by a single blast is 40 ft (Fig 2). PREPARATION OF PANEL GRADE In preparation of panel grades bulldozers and rooters are used for the bulk of the work and an auto-patrol road grader for the final stage. At Morenci, bulldozers have always been used for track-grade preparation, but before the introduction of the other two types of equipment grades were uneven and irregular at best, and always necessitated a big gang of track laborers to hand-block under the ties with rocks after a track was laid into place. High blocking also made poor track because of instability and caused frequent derailments. Under these conditions derailments were generally bad as re-railing became difficult. Much track was torn up and many ties broken in the process. The inadequacy of the hand-blocked track, together with the inefficiency of hand blocking, constantly pointed to the desirability of reducing the amount of labor required, so various means were tried to improve conditions, such as wood

FRANCE will be given a large portion of the Marshall Plan funds for relief, reconstruction, and industrial development in France and in her colonial possessions. At present that country is not in position to export any large tonnages of the mineral products needed in the United States. However, if, through Marshall Plan aid and private capital investment, production of these products can be largely increased, agreement should be made by which the United States is to get a substantial portion of such increased output in part payment for the material and technical aid they receive. France issued a decree, published in the "Official Gazette" on Feb. 3, 1948, which permits conversion into dollars of dividends derived from dollar investment in Government-approved projects and will agree to a scale of capital amortization to be determined in each individual case. This decree is to encourage private capital to cooperate with local capital in industrial undertakings. THE greater part of the literature on the plastic behavior of magnesium dates back to that active period of research in crystal mechanics immediately following the widespread preparation of isolated metallic crystals large enough for the application of conventional methods of mechanical testing. These investigations, performed on single crystals, revealed an analogy between zinc and magnesium with respect to their fundamental mode of deformation, in the operation of glide and twinning, respectively, on crystallographically similar planes. Mathewson and Phillips (1928)1 by geometrical analysis identified the {102} ? plane in magnesium as the twinning plane, Schiebold and Siebel (1931)2 confirmed this twinning plane, established the basal plane as the plane of slip, and a digonal axis I as the slip direction. They also reported twin formation in a secondary role on the {101} plane. Schmid (1931)3 summarized and discussed the earlier evidence and presented the results of his own experiments on the effect of temperature and small amounts of soluble elements. From X-ray studies on extended wire single crystals, he concluded that slip along the basal plane in the direction of the digonal axis I closest to the stress direction was the sole slip system operating at atmospheric temperature. This conclusion was based on experiments with crystals of many different orientations relative to the stress axis. Special attention was directed to the basal plane and the digonal axis I, as the plane and direction of greatest atomic density. Determinations of resolved shear stress at the onset of plastic yielding-i.e., the critical resolved shear stress-were also made; the average of these calculations showing 82.9 grams per sq. mm. This value varied only slightly up to 300°C., at which temperature it was found to decrease to 70.5 grams per sq. mm.
