Dilute alloys of silver and of thallium in tin have been solidijzed unidirectionally under controlled conditions, to study the segregation associated with a cellular interface under conditions where both thermal and solute convection are present. Autoradiography and radioactive tracer counting techniques were combined with electron-probe microanalysis to study both macro- and microsegregation. It was found that, for concentrations giving only small amounts of constitutional supercooling, cell formation had little effect on the macroscopic distribution of solute along the specimen. At higher concentrations the effective distribution coefficient was higher than that expected for a smooth interface. Node spacing was independent of initial solute content at lower concentrations, becoming greater as keff increased. Silver content at the segregation nodes of silver in tin alloys was independent of initial concentration and considerably in excess of the eutectic composition. SINCE the investigation of cell formation at advancing solid-liquid interfaces by Rutter and Chalmers,' a large volume of work has been dedicated to the determination of solidification conditions under which a planar interface will break down into cellular form. Early experiments were explained satisfactorily by the concept of constitutional supercooling,2 but, due to poor measurement of temperature gradients in the liquid, lack of accurate data on liquid diffusion and equilibrium distribution coefficients, and uncertainty about the effects of thermal and solute convection, these experiments cannot be used as proof for the theory. More recent work, however, has shown that under conditions where convection is eliminated or can be ignored good correlation is observed.3,4 Investigations into segregation at cell caps5 and at cell nodes6-'' have been made, but no measurements appear to have been done on the overall, macroscopic segregation down a unidirectionally solidified rod of material which has solidified with a cellular substructure. This has practical importance in casting, where regions of material with cellular substructure are often encountered, and also in zone refining where the thermal conditions necessary for a planar interface are unattainable. Further, as will be shown, the macroscopic segregation can give information on the following question. Granted that a cellular solid-liquid interface develops from a planar one when the conditions for constitutional supercooling are exceeded, how much supercooling is present after the cells have formed? EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE AND RESULTS Specimen Preparation. Specimens 25 cm long with a square cross section 0.6 by 0.6 cm were grown in graphite boats by solidification from one end. Alloy compositions are given in Table I. Two specimens of each composition were grown. The tin was 5-9 grade and the silver and thallium both 4-9 grade. Ag110 and Tl204 were used as tracers. Each composition had the same quantity of tracer so that auto radiographs of specimens containing different concentrations of the same element could be easily compared. Thermocouples inserted through the lid of the boat into a dummy specimen showed that, over the first 10 cm of growth, thermal conditions were quite steady, with a rate of interface advance of 5.8 cm per hr and a temperature gradient in the melt ahead of the interface of 3.0°C per cm. The specimens were seeded from tin crystals of a common orientation to eliminate orientation effects. Dilution of the specimen by seed material was minimized by the provision of a narrow neck between specimen and seed crystal. Macrosegregation. After growth, the specimens were sectioned with a spark cutter. The rods of silver alloy were cut into 1-cm lengths and analyzed for Ag110 using a y -ray counter with fixed geometry. The specimens containing thallium were cut into 2-cm lengths and analyzed for T1 204 by taking 13 counts from each end of the cut lengths through an aperture in lead sheet approximately 0.4 cm square. The results are summarized in Figs. 1 and 2. To find the effective distribution coefficient for the silver in tin alloys under smooth interface conditions, the region of substructure at the bottom surface of one of the 10 ppm specimens, see Fig. 3, was removed by spark machining before counting. Autoradiography. For both alloy systems the samples were polished on sections taken alternately parallel and perpendicular to the growth direction, and autoradiographed by placing the polished surfaces in contact with Kodak "Process Ortho" film. Figs. 3 and 4 show the structures revealed. The alloy containing 10 ppm Ag showed substructure only after a few centimeters of growth, and then substructure was limited to a narrow layer at the base. The "speckled" substructure reported previously in this system4 is here clearly seen to be an intermediate stage between planar and cellular interface conditions. The question arises as to whether any increase in capacity accompanied the 11-ton addition. It is hardly conceivable that all of the balls making up the l l-ton addition were sterile. However, as the work done in the ball mill is not by kilo-watthours per se or balls per se but by kilowatthour-balls, it is possible that the kilowatthourballs in the mill before the ll-ton addition had a different amperage, voltage or robustage than those in the mill after the addition and that the overall outcome was that equal work was done before and after the addition. The authors can keep the efficiency that they got with the 45 pct volume 1-in. ball charge and get additional capacity by putting more kilowatthourballs to work in the form of the addition of 11 tons of 2-in. balls to the present ball charge, and subsequent makeup additions by weight of 20 pct 2-in. balls and 80 pct 1-in. balls. J. F. Myers (authors' reply)-—Mr. Garms points his finger at the 11 tons of "sterile" balls added to the Tri-cone mill. A fact so interesting to us that we felt it should be reported. Clearly, ball slippage at the existing mill speed prevented any further transfer of power from the shell to the ball mass. We agree that the kilowatthourballs would increase, were we charging rough 2-in. balls as suggested by Mr. Garms. The assumption is, of course, that we would get a corresponding increase in work done. Our reported data (CIME meeting, Vancouver, 1946) shows a gain of work accomplished of 7.6 pct as we decreased the ball size from 2 in. to 1% in. and a further gain of work accomplished of 2.1 pct when we went from 1 % in. to 1 in. The small ball results reported by H. R. Banks at Chapman Camp are also very convincing. In the case of 2-in. balls they would take the conventional ball path and start cascading. Magnesite both Massive and Crystalline MAGNESITES are. of two general classes-massive and crystalline. Massive magnesite occurs in serpentine, being formed by the breaking down or decay of serpentine-making minerals or rocks as olivine, etc. (All the magnesia contained by the olivine is not liberated, as a portion goes to make up the serpentine; the breaking up of this serpentine later forms more magnesite.) Serpentine in various stages of transformation is found in the vicinity of magnesite deposits. Massive magnesite is very widely distributed. It is found in Greece, . California, Africa, India, Australia, Mexico, South America, and deposits of varying sizes occur in several of the European countries. Those on the Island of Euboea, Greece, are probable the most important deposits of this character of magnesite. They have been worked for a number of years, the principal quarries or mines being 3 miles in the interior from the village of St. George. (St. George is on the west coast of the island, between the towns of Limni and Khalkis.) (Figs. 1 and 2). -The magnesite occurs in veins or lenses in serpentine. Some of these lenses are very large; one worked several years ago was approximately, 50 ft. in thickness, 75 to 100 ft. high and 300 ft. or more in length. The magnesite is pure white and makes a very prominent feature of the landscape. While massive magnesite is widely scattered over the world, many of the deposits are in veins too thin to work. The usual mode of occurrence is in the form of stock work, the deposits in Venezuela, Mexico, and many of those in California, being of this form. The veins vary in thickness from the thinness of paper up to several inches, running in all directions, occasionally leading to a mass or nucleus of some,size. The spaces between the veins are filled with a disintegrated serpentine in the form of sand. Several of the deposits in California would probably be workable, if they were more favorably situated with reference to transportation, but by far the majority of the deposits are too poor to work. SOME nonmetallic minerals and their products, such as portland cement, common brick and hollow tile, sand, gravel, crushed rock, vitrified salt-glaze clay pipe, and the like, are a necessity in every community. They are mineral in nature but the establishment of plants for their production is usually a local and elementary problem. Yet it is probable that an economic study of the problem in every locality will show that such nonmetallic mineral commodities are not always obtained in the most economical way, or in the best quality. Other nonmetallic minerals are of such value that they may be shipped for long distances and sold in sufficient quantities to establish prosperous commercial ventures. Among these are phosphates, barium compounds, borates, nitrogen compounds, magnesium compounds, sulfur, asbestos, and potash. Success in marketing such products depends on quality, production cost, transportation, and similar conditions.

This report is a brief discussion of the impurity levels both in primary aluminum and super-purily alnminim in connection with raw materials and proc-essing methods. Particularly, truce amounls of im-purities were analyzed by introducing nittss-speclro-gruphy and nenlron-aclivalian analysis techniques. Vanadium and gallium content in primary aluminum metal corresponded to theor amounls in anode coke. but the nickel content in primary aluminum was hide-pendent oj its amount in the anode cake. Sulfur in the anode colic might result in an increase of the iron content in the molten metal in the reduction cell. The content of sodium and calcium increased with increasing bath ratio. In the holding furnacc sodium content decreased rapidly, and nonmetallic inclusions merit separated front the mollen metal. Three-layer elctrolysis was effectire in eliminating many impuri-ties with the exception of copper, aluminum oxide. aluminum nitride, and some rare-earth elements. THE amount of impurities and nonmetallic inclusions in aluminum metal depends on impurities in the raw materials and various production processes. This paper presents an investigation of the behavior of impurities and nonmetallic inclusions in aluminum during the electrolysis process, the period in the holding furnace, and the process of three-layer electrolysis. Chemical analysis and emission spectrometric analysis have generally been used as methods to determine small amounts of impurities in both primary aluminum and super-purity aluminum; however. mass spectrography and neutron-activation analysis have been recently introduced into this field, and trace amounts of impurities can accurately be determined by these latter methods. EXPERIMENTAL WORK Common impurities were determined by means of absorptiometric. polarographic, flame-photometric. and emission-spectrometric methods. However, in the determination of trace amounts of impurities and non-metallic inclusions, the following methods were applied. In the analyses of trace impurities by mass-spec- trographic analysis, samples were exposed in the vacuum spark of double-focus ing Mattauch-Herzog type mass spectrograph (Japan Electron Optics Laboratory, Ltd.). Ilford Q2 photographic plates were used as ion detectors. Fe was used as the internal standard, and the atomic concentration of each element was calculated by the following expression and converted into the weight concentration: where E, and Ei are the exposures (coulomb) when isotopes of the internal standard and impurity elements (on which the estimate is based) show the same density, X is the percent (atomic) concentration of the standard, IF and Ii are the percent abundances of the isotopes of the standard the impurity elements (on which the estimate is based), and Ms and hfi are the mass of the isotopes of the standard and impurity elements (on which the estimate is based). The coefficient of variation in this method is about 40 pct in the range of 0.1 to 1 ppm. In neutron-activation analysis, irradiations were done in the nuclear reactors TRIGA-I1 (neutron flux: 4.7 x 10 11 n per sq cm per sec; Rikkyo University) or JRR-2 (neutron flux: 2 x 1013 n per sq cm per sec: Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute). After the chemical separation, a NaI (3 by 3 in.) scintillator connected to a 256-channel y-ray spectrometer (R.C.L.) was used for counting and recording various activated impurities. The coefficient of variation in this method is about 20 pct. In the analyses of nonmetallic inclusions, aluminum-oxide determination was carried out according to Fischer's method, 3 as follows. A slice of sample was cut off and the surface was cleaned. It was dissolved in bromine-methanol. The solution was filtered and the residue was washed. The residue was fused with potassium bisulfate flux. Then it was dissolved in weak acid, and oxine solution was added. The aluminum oxinate was extracted with benzene. Finally, aluminum was determined absorptio-metrically. Aluminum nitride determination was carried out as follows. A slice of sample was cut off and the surface was cleaned. It was put in the distillation apparatus and decomposed with sodium hydroxide solution. The solution was distilled. Then ammonia was absorbed and

LEACHING of mined-out areas at the Arizona property of the Ray Mines Division, Kennecott Copper Corp., was started on Jan. 20, 1.937, and by July 1, 1938, 10,000,000 lb. of copper had been produced by this method. Leaching operations at present are confined to the western portion of the ore body and over an area of approximately ten acres. The ore in this area was extremely high in pyrite and the copper content, which averaged slightly in excess of 1 per cent, was the result of incomplete secondary enrichment by solutions which apparently worked laterally from the main ore body. Above the ore was an unaltered zone of primary or protore averaging 125 ft. in thickness and containing approximately 0.6 per cent copper. Above this was the capping or leached zone averaging 50 ft. thick.

INTRODUCTION Additional work has been done on the CIP circuit at Creede, and a brief description of this work is presented in this paper. DREDGE The original dredge for the Bulldog was built by Al Hack, Inc. of Denver. The dredge cutter head is mounted on a boom made of 6-inch diameter pipe which is raised and lowered by a cable-pulley system. Maximum cutting depth is 8 feet. Slurry from the dredge flows through a floating 6-inch diameter pipe supported on 55-gallon drums which runs from the dredge to the shore and then to a trash screen and pumping system. See Figures 1 and 2. The cutter head, suction pump, winches for dredge movement, and all other operations are controlled from a small operations house located toward the rear of the dredge. All of the basic dredge equipment is mounted on a chassis about 8 ft x 16 ft in size. Additional buoyancy was originally provided by sealed 55-gallon drums supported along the sides of the chassis by a small wooden framework. Additional framework and barrels on the front of the chassis on either side of the cutter boom provided additional stability, particularly when digging in hard material. The dredge was quite stable, but two problems were apparent. For one, it could have been sunk by someone from the shore firing a rifle into all of the barrels. (Reprinted With some additions and changes from the Engineering and Mining Journal)] THE death of Prof. Samuel Benedict Christy on the 30th of November,. at the age of 61 years, cuts short a brilliant and influential professional career. He was born in San Francisco, Aug. 8, 1853, and was graduated as Bachelor of Philosophy at the University of California in 1874. For the five years that followed, he studied mining and metallurgy as a post-graduate in the same institution, serving also as instructor in analytical chemistry, and becoming in 1879 instructor in mining and metallurgy¬a position which he held until 1885. During this period he became known also by his contributions to technical literature, the earliest of which, perhaps, was his report on the Monte Diablo coals (in 1875); but the first which drew my attention to him was an exceedingly able discussion (in 1879) of the genesis of the quicksilver deposits of California, in which he followed with much acuteness and originality the lead of Professor Becker, who had been teaching at the University of California. The notion of the thermo-aqueous formation of such deposits was then new; and the laborers in a field now familiar to every student deserve the credit due to pioneers. For some years the subject of quicksilver seems to have occupied much of Christy's attention. In 1877, he described the mines and works at Almaden, Spain; in 1884, the Imperial quicksilver works at Idria, Austria; in 1889, the New Almaden mines of California. But his great work was the creation of the school, of mining and metallurgy at the University of California, which may be said to have begun with his occupancy of a full professorship of these branches. It is not necessary here to recount the early difficulties and perils of the University, and its long struggle for academic independence of political control or interference. The battle is over, and the institution is now upheld by the intelligent loyalty of the citizens of California, without regard to party. But while the issue was uncertain, the development of special schools of applied science was scarcely practicable. Doctor Becker and William Ashburner had given up the school of mines as a hopeless task when Christy, younger and less experienced, took it up. As he wrote me in February, 1901-

DURING the last few years, the trend in the aircraft and automotive industries has been toward higher and higher operating engine temperatures. This has created considerable interest in the effect of temperature on the properties of alloys. In the magnesium field, it has been recognized for many years that the addition of cerium imparts high strength and good resistance to creep at elevated temperatures. Beck,1 in his treatise on-magnesium, has summarized the work of German investigators. This includes the unpublished data of Menking, showing the increase in strength and hardness of extruded alloys containing 2 to 20 per cent Ce at temperatures from 200 to 300°C. (68° to 572°F.) and the results of Vosskühler, who demonstrated the improved resistance to creep of alloys containing 6 per cent Ce plus 2 per cent Mn and 0.5 per cent Ce plus 2 per cent Mn at 150°C. (302°F.). Wellinger and Keil2 have also reported the creep properties of a forged magnesium-cerium-manganese alloy at 200° and 250°C. (392° and 482°F.). Haughton and Prytherch have determined the tensile properties of various forged magnesium alloys containing cerium, cerium plus manganese, cerium plus calcium, cerium plus nickel, cerium plus nickel plus manganese, and cerium plus cobalt plus manganese at temperatures up to 290°C. (554°F.). Magnesium-cerium alloys have been used in some commercial applications. It is reported that an alloy containing 3 per cent Ce plus 0.5 per cent Mn plus 0.5 per cent Ca is being used on a forged impeller in Great Britain. Two forged parts made from an alloy with a nominal composition of 5 per cent Ce and 2 percent Mn have been found on the German .BMW-801D aircraft engine. These two forgings consist of a supercharger impeller and a rear cam-follower guide. In this country, several types of pistons have been made experimentally in both .the cast and the forged conditions from an alloy containing 6 per cent Ce plus 2 per, cent Mn and in the cast condition from an alloy of magnesium plus 10 per cent Ce. The cast pistons have been tested in various types of internal-combustion engines, with promising results. This paper presents the results of an extensive investigation on the properties of various cerium-containing magnesium alloys in both the cast and the forged conditions. Data are presented to show the beneficial effects of increasing amounts of cerium on the mechanical properties of magnesium at elevated temperatures. The effects of heat-treatment on the properties of these alloys and the attendant changes in the microstructure are discussed. The

RECONNAISSANCE of a part of southeastern Idaho and small strip of western Wyoming lying between longitudes 111° and 111° and 45' W., and latitudes 43° and 43° and 30' N., comprising an area of approximately 1330 sq. mi., was undertaken during the summer of 1923 for the collection of data regarding the oil possibilities of the region. TOPOGRAPHY, SETTLEMENT, AND ACCESSIBILITY The entire area lies within the upper Snake River drainage basin. Snake River flows through the northeastern and eastern part of the area in a northwesterly direction. The entire drainage system has been controlled by the structure of the sedimentary beds in the area, which exhibit numerous alternations of hard and soft strata with consequent unequal erosion. When the United States Government started buying gold at varying prices per ounce, set by the President and the Treasury Department, the gold miner found himself facing new conditions, as gold became a commodity with a fluctuating market price. While it was self-evident that the miner was to receive more for his gold than the old established price of $20.67 per ounce, there was an element of uncertainty, which made it difficult, and perhaps dangerous, to decide to invest his time and money to produce gold, especially if the profit would represent only the difference between $20.67 an ounce and the new price as set from day to day by the Government. When, however, on Jan. 30, 1934, the United States went off the gold standard, the price of newly mined gold being rather definitely set at $35 per ounce, with some assurance that the price would be maintained at or near this figure for a long time to come, the gold miner was justified in revaluing his property on the basis of the new price, and the prospector was offered inducement to spend his time and energies hunting for new mines, or going back to old locations previously abandoned as of doubtful value. It is interesting to see what this new price means to the producer of newly mined gold, and how much of the increase is passed on to the producer. It will be found that, as with the base metals, the nearer he can get to producing a finished product himself the greater his reward will be; the net returns for bullion being necessarily higher than for the same amount of gold shipped in concentrates to the smelter. Bullion can be shipped to the United States mints or Government assay offices under the following terms and conditions. An affidavit must accompany the shipment, stating, among other things: 1. The source of the gold; whether ore, tailings or placer. 2. The tons of ore, tailings or cubic yards of gravel from which the shipment was recovered.

(written dlscussion ?) .-It is interesting to observe how closely Mr. Hansen agrees with other investigators to the effect that the art of electrolytic zinc has left the realm of mystery. In his introduction, lie has said practically what Thomas French said in his paper "The Future of Electrolytic Zinc. "1 The successful electrolysis of zinc from sulphate solutions has not been an easy matter, and it is only within recent years that the difficult problem of depositing high-grade zinc has been satisfactorily: accomplished on a commercial basis. The principal requisite is. that the electrolyte shall be quite free from certain impurities. The methods by which freedom from these impurities is assured are now very well understood, and with experienced superintendents there is little difficulty in obtaining a high efficiency in that part of the process. When certain underlying principles are recognized, the difficulty encountered in dealing with the filtration of the acid and slimy solutions also largely disappears, although it has been a very serious one to the uninitiated. Drilling for oil today involves exploration at depths ranging to 21,000 ft, nearly 4 miles. Geological formations encountered at these depths offer a tremendous challenge to the production, research, and service facilities of any drilling mud company.

Coal companies in the anthracite region are studying various methods of mining, seeking one that will shorten considerably the life of the gangway and thus decrease the maintenance charges. In steep pitching measures, the maintenance charges of the gangways are high because of the cost of replacing timbers and cleaning up falls. Therefore, if the length of the gangways can be decreased and the mining made more concentrated, the life of the coal gangways will be decreased and the maintenance charges per ton of coal produced will be smaller. The practice in the anthracite region is to drive long coal gangways and to work the breasts as the gangway from which they were driven is advanced. In many cases these gangways are from 4000 to 6000 ft. in length; and some are even longer. As these must be maintained not only until they have reached their limit but until second mining begins (which may be some years later), the maintenance charges are high. If the gangway is allowed to close, when the time comes to remove the pillars the cost of re-opening it may be as expensive as the original driving cost. The Lehigh and Wilkes-Barre Coal Co., at its Wanamie Colliery at Wanamie, Pa., has been using a system of mining that, as far as the writer knows, is not used in any other place in the anthracite fields. Laboratory and pilot scale tests have been made to determine the utility of heavymedia separation, particularly a cone-type separator, as a means of recovering aluminum and other values from shredded municipal solid waste. The effect of the method of shredding on the behavior of aluminum in a heavy-media system was determined. Two-stage pilot-scale heavy-media separations were made with size fractions of shredded refuse. Recoveries of aluminum, as well as other components of the refuse, were measured and medium losses determined. The experimental results indicate that with certain reservations a heavy-media cone system can be utilized for aluminum separation and recovery from shredded and air-classified municipal solid waste. Observations made using two-stage heavy-media separation in a drum unit are included. Qualitatively, the results from the two types of separators are similar.

AN excerpt from the Alabama State Mining Law, pertaining to, transporting men' into and out of the mines, reads as follows: "A trip of empty cars may be operated for the purpose of taking employees into and out of the mine, where the distance to and from their work exceeds one mile." The State Mining Department of Alabama includes in its inspection the transportation of men into and out of the mines, also studying and noting improvements, or progress made, that would tend to create a greater assurance of safety in this practice. Everyone is familiar with the original safety methods employed in man-trip transportation, such as passing a rope around the trip of cars, or through the cars, fastened in the conventional manner, and with the usual "clog," commonly called a drag, on the rear end. Also there is a more advanced method of transporting men, such as the double-rope system, which is feasible on slopes used exclusively for this purpose, and is very satisfactory. Under existing economic conditions, the treatment of gold ores occupies an outstanding position in metallurgical activity. The increased price of gold has automatically brought about a reclassification of old dumps and low-grade orebodies, and many that formerly were considered valueless are now being vigorously investigated and worked. This situation has developed problems that have taxed the ingenuity and ability of metallurgists to the utmost. Some gold ores give a high extraction of gold by standardized methods of treatment; other ores of apparently similar character yield but a relatively small percentage of their gold when treated by the same processes. Surface Contamination The experience gained by microscopic study of numerous gold ores and tailings has shown that there are pronounced differences in the physical characteristics of the minerals composing them, more especially of the gold. Repeated studies of tailings from flotation and cyanidation of gold ores has established the fact that surface contaminations on gold particles are often directly responsible for high gold losses; comparison of gold particles isolated from flotation concentrates and the resulting tailings have showed that the clean gold has been recovered and the tarnished or contaminated gold invariably lost in the tailing. Obviously, it is not possible to make such a comparison of gold ores treated by cyanidation, as the clean gold has been taken into solution; but when the gold found in cyanide tailing has a tarnished or coated surface, one may infer, with a reasonable degree of certainty, that the clean gold has been extracted. This premise is supported by experimental evidence obtained by isolating particles of tarnished gold and exposing them to cyanide solution in small parting cups. In one such experiment, tarnished gold particles picked from a cyanide tailing showed but slight evidence 01 dissolving at the end of 27 days.
