The work reported in this paper was carried out to supplement the existing information concerning directional properties and recrystallization textures of annealed brass sheet and strip. These characteristics are of direct interest when the forming and drawing properties of such material are being considered. Among those who have made contributions in this field are Bass and G1ocker;l Bauer, Göler and Sachs;2 Phillips and Samans;3 Pratt;4 Price;5 Cook;6 Richards;7 Brick;8 and Brick and Williamson.9 These investigators have found, in general, that in brass strip that shows directional variations in properties, tensile strength has a minimum value and elongation has a maximum value at 45' to the rolling direction. The most pronounced directional properties have been found in material given the greatest reductions in rolling followed by high annealing temperatures. Recrystallization texture of brass has been variously reported as (II3)[II2], (ooi)[ioo], and a combination of (II0)[II5] and traces of the primary rolling texture, (110)[112]. The directional studies have been very informative, but actual tests appear to have been confined to material in its final condition. Tests at intermediate stages have received little attention although previous history of some materials has been partly considered. Perhaps the most comprehensive investigation was made by Cook,' who studied the directional properties of 70-30 brass strip for which the final and penultimate, or next to the last, anneals and the final reductions were varied. He found that, for any given combination of penultimate anneal and final reduction, the tendency toward the development of directional properties was reduced as the temperature of the final anneal was decreased. In addition to drawing cups and making tensile tests of the finished material at various angles to the rolling direction, he measured the frequency and the angles of twins in grains for several specimens. Plots of his twin counts showed directionality for the materials that produced eared cups. Test Materials and Equipment For this investigation, one commercial heat of 68-32 brass was cast in the form of bars for cold-rolling, I31/2 in wide and I1/2 in. thick. The analysis was as follows: 68.83 per cent copper, 0.04 per cent lead, 0.01 per cent iron, 31.12 per cent zinc (by difference). The bars were so processed to the final thickness, 0.020 in., as to obtain on this thickness all possible combinations of the variables listed below except those involving the sequence of 84 per cent penultimate reduction and 84 per cent final reduction: I. Penultimate reductions of 37 per cent, 50 per cent and 84 per cent; 2. Penultimate anneals at 800°, 900°, 1050° and 1200°F.; 3. For the last 4 years political leaders have found a new subject on which they can safely generalize wihout creating opposition. That subject is commodity prices. Since the four-fold increase in OPEC crude oil prices, public attention has focussed as never before on the subject of commodity prices. To advocate stabilizing commodity prices is akin to supporting motherhood or peace or better schooling. Everyone gives lip service to the concept that stable commodity prices are desirable. It is easier to state the principle than to achieve it. Prices that are stable in terms of one currency may be clearly unstable in terms of a different currency. This has become a troublesome matter since 1971, when the world's leading trading currencies were set free to float in relation to each other. To illustrate: consider copper prices in the interval between the end of 1974 and the end of 1977. During those 3 years, the copper price in pounds sterling on the London Metal Exchange rose by 25 per cent. During that period, however, in terms of the USA dollar equivalent, the price was unchanged. And during that period, in terms of the German mark equivalent the price shrank by 13 per cent while the Japanese yen equivalent fell by 20 per cent. Thus a price that appears stable in dollars, rose in terms of pounds sterling and fell in terms of marks and yen. Had this result been achieved as a consequence of an international effort to stabilize prices, an American would have said the effort was successful. An Englishman would have said it had failed to prevent a price rise. And a German or a Japanese consumer would have been happy to have covered his copper needs at a lower cost in terms of his own currency.

DESCRIPTION. ACCORDING to the estimates prepared by the U. S. Geological Survey, the area underlain by workable coal-beds in the United States is 496,776 sq. miles. Of this total area, 480 sq. miles contain the entire anthracite coal-fields of Pennsylvania. The bituminous coal-fields are estimated to be contained in areas aggregating 250,051 sq. miles. The grade of coal between bituminous and lignite, and which is designated by the Geological Survey as " sub-bituminous," is estimated to be contained within areas aggregating 97,636 sq. miles, while the areas containing lignite aggregate 148,609 sq. miles. The coal-fields are divided, for the sake of convenience in classification, into six main provinces, as follows: 1. The Eastern. Province, containing the anthracite coal-fields of Pennsylvania and the bituminous coal-fields of the Appalachian region-namely, those of western Pennsylvania, Ohio, Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, and small outlying areas in North Carolina. 2. The Interior .Province, containing the bituminous coal-producing regions of Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, western Kentucky, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Texas. 3. The Gulf Province, containing the lignite-areas of Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Texas. 4. The Northern or Great Plains Province, containing the lignite and sub-bituminous areas of North and South Dakota, eastern Montana, and northeastern Wyoming. 5. The Rocky Mountain Province, containing the bituminous and sub-bituminous areas of western Montana and western Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, and New Mexico. 6. The Pacific Coast Province, containing-the areas of Washington, Oregon, and California.

The recent emphasis placed upon the use of molybdenum as a geochemical indicator has stimulated considerable inquiry into the behavior of molybdenum in the zone of oxidation. This paper represents a summary of recent and continuing experimental work and calculations in an investigation of a portion of the system Mo-Fe-S-H20 and treats the stability of various iron and molybdenum compounds with respect to oxidation potential and pH. Using experimentally determined free energy values for ferrimolybdite, diagrams of the stability fields of this mineral have been calculated with respect to ilsemannite (?), molybdenite, pyrite and limonite. This theoretical approach is the one utilized by Garrels3'4 in studies of the relationships of various minerals in the zone of oxidation. Use of this approach is particularly suited to the study of geochemistry in the zone of supergene processes because of the low temperatures, low pressures and other relatively easily determined and duplicated factors that exist in the near surface environment. Such a study of molybdenum, however, is complicated by several factors. One of these is the fact that the strong amphoteric behavior of molybdenum makes possible a wide variety of substances and complexes whose exact chemical natures are unknown. The second factor is the dearth of thermodynamic data for many of the simplest of the possible compounds and ions important to the study. For the purpose of this study, the problem of complexes has been approached through considering only the simpler possibilities realizing that the complexes and systems so treated may be gross oversimplifications. All the complexes considered, however, have been suggested in the chemical 2,7,9,12 or geologi-cal literature. EXPERIMENTAL WORK Studies of the behavior of molybdenum ions and ferrimolybdite have been carried out in aqueous sys- tems, and reactions have been followed by simultaneous measurement and recording of pH and oxidation potential. A major problem involved in this study was the long periods of time necessary for equilibrium to be established in some of the systems considered; in a few instances, these periods exceeded four weeks, that is, four weeks during which measured conditions changed continuously. Another problem, in some instances, was the indeterminate nature of the reactions that have taken place. Because of the tendency of molybdenum to complex, reactions which take place under some of the more extreme imposed conditions of oxidation and acidity or alkalinity are unknown. However, useful data for the present work were obtained from studies of the molybdate ion and ferrimolybdite between pH 2 and 8 and under only moderately oxidizing to nonoxidizing conditions. Instruments used in the experiments were a Hewlitt-Packard Model 412A VTVM, a modified Beckman Zeromatic pH Meter and two Varian model 11 recorders. pH was measured between glass and calomel electrodes and Eh was measured between calomel and platinum electrodes. Conditions of pH were varied with 1N H2SO4 and 1N NH4OH and 1N NaOH. Eh was varied with gaseous nitrogen, oxygen or aqueous H202. Ambient temperature was essentially uniform at 24ºC and was increased in the reaction vessel by the positioning of a magnetic stirrer whose temperature was sufficient to bring the temperature to 2S°C in the reaction. The temperatures of reaction did not vary more than 1/2ºfrom 25°C. Two reactions were investigated, the ferrimolybdite-limonite-water reaction and the reduction of molybdate ion. Studies of both reactions yielded useful data that were used in preparation of the Eh-pH diagrams. The traces of the reactions are shown on Fig. 1. Ferrimolybdite-Limonite- Water: Studies of this reaction involved analysis of the solution of ferrimolybdite and simultaneous formation of ferric hydroxide. The data are summarized on Fig. 1. In this reaction, equilibrium was attained at various pH's when coexistence of the two solid phases (ferrimolybdite and ferric hydroxide) was attained. At the proper pH, controlled by the amount of ferrimolybdite and thus the dissolved content of molybdate species, both phases were observed and reaction times to complete the transition were on the order of weeks. AT present the Federal Government represents the only organization applying geophysical methods of prospecting in Brazil. The geophysical work of the National Department of Mineral Production, which will be described in the following pages, must be considered as a program of experimental work designed to demonstrate the applicability of the more or less "standard" methods of geophysical prospecting to various problems of economic interest in Brazil by means of practical examples of results obtained in certain typical areas. Our work is somewhat similar to that of the Imperial Geophysical Experimental Survey of Australia, but our task has been greatly simplified by the ever increasing number of technical publications relative to the theory of instruments and methods.

The flotation rate of coal has been studied using a continuous laboratory flotation cell and a multiple exposure photographic technique. The effects of particle size, reagent additions and cell turbulence on the flotation rate of coal have been investigated. The results have been analyzed in terms of current theories of particle bubble encounter and adhesion. The rupture forces which occur during particle bubble encounter have been shown to have an important effect on the flotation rate of coarse coal particles. The flotation of coal is a time dependent process, and in order to obtain a complete understanding of the operation it is necessary to determine the kinetics of the process. In coal flotation, the flotation rate and the associated values of cell productivity in terms of tons per kilowatt-hour and tons per cubic foot of cell volume are of greater importance than in most other mineral flotation operations. The reasons for this are associated with the low unit value of coal and the relatively high cost of coal flotation compared with other coal cleaning processes. An important aspect of coal flotation kinetics is the design of coal flotation cells. The cells used in many coal cleaning operations are often replicas of those used for the treatment of sulfide ores and are not necessarily suitable for the treatment of coal washing pulps, which usually contain a higher percentage of coarse and floatable material than the sulfide pulps for which the cells were designed. This disadvantage of many coal flotation cells has been recognized by Russian engineers who, by the addition of baffles to their subaeration coal flotation cells have increased the cell capacity by 100%. Investigation of the variables which influence flotation kinetics and cell productivity are, therefore, important to the coal industry where flotation is the only accepted method of cleaning the fine (-1/2mm) coal. The kinetics of the flotation process have been investigated in detail by Schumann10 who developed a continuous flotation cell which permitted the study of flotation under steady state conditions. This technique has been used by Gaudin et a1.,6 Brown and Smith and recently by Jowett and Savfi.7 The latter authors have developed a refined mathematical treatment for interpreting the results of continuous laboratory tests. Attempts have also been made to study flotation kinetics using conventional batch testing techniques. The experimental difficulties, however, and the problems of determining the order of the flotation rate process have made this technique of dubious value. A summary of the proposed rate equations for batch testing and the difficulties associated with this technique is given by Brown and Smith. 2 The experimental techniques described above are concerned with the rate of production of froth product. EVERYONE is familiar with the story of the poor Indian and his leaking tepee. He couldn't repair the leak while it was raining, naturally. And when it wasn't raining, where was the incentive? Even if this traditional Indian was apochryphal, his counterparts are certainly alive today, and operating on a world-wide scale. - A recent issue of the Wall Street Journal, for example, carried an impassioned letter from an old cocoa planter, who wants the world to know why the price of cocoa has gone skyrocketing. For years, he says, British and American interests have bought cocoa at the cheapest possible price and, incidentally, from growers willing to sell at that price. Between them, they didn't put enough money back into the business, either to fight disease in the cocoa groves or to plant new cocoa trees. Until new trees are planted and come into bearing, we will be paying exorbitant prices for our cocoa, and getting less of it.

A MAN who is a first-class metallurgist, engineer, and scientist and an outstanding organizer, administrator, and executive and who, at the same time, has an innate ability to "make friends and influence people" everywhere he goes is an exceptional personality at any time. And if such an individual can retain this combination of virtues during a great war despite the fact that the Government loaded him with enough work and responsibility for three such men. he is a most exceptional personality. And if he can keep his head and maintain an unfailing sense of humor during the trying war years and, while dealing with hundreds of jittery metallurgists and metalworkers, with Army and Navy brass, and with red-tape-entangled war agencies by the dozen, he is a rare personality indeed. Such a man is Clyde Williams, director of Battelle Memorial Institute. who will be President of AIME in 1947. The Institute is fortunate in having him as its mentor during what may be a critical and important year.

The electrolytic zinc plant of the Sullivan Mining Co. is in Government Gulch, at Silver King, Shoshone County, Idaho, in the Coeur d'Alene mining district, about one mile from the Bunker Hill smelter and about three miles from Kellogg. The Sullivan Mining Co., which owns both the zinc plant and the Star mine, is itself owned jointly by the Bunker Hill & Sullivan Mining & Concentrating Co, and the Hecla Mining Company. The Tainton high-density, high-acid process is used at this plant, therefore some parts of its flowsheet differ markedly from those of electrolytic plants using the low-density process. While it is a custom plant and has treated a variety of zinc concentrates originating from various sources in a number of states, it has obtained its main supply of zinc concentrates chiefly from the zinc-bearing ores of the Coeur d'A1ene mining district, of which the principal important sources have been the Bunker Hill and Star mines. Thus the main feed has been zinc concentrates obtained from complex lead-zinc-silver ores. For the year of 1935 the concentrates had the following composition: water, 9.5 per cent; Zn, 50.6; Pb, 3.3; Fe, 9.4; S, 31.0; Cu, 0.2; insoluble, 2.9. Flowsheet The concentrates are delivered to the plant in railroad cars, which discharge into storage bins directly under the track. Bottom-dump cars are dropped directly into the bins while a slip scraper, pulled by an air tugger hoist, is used to empty box cars. There are five storage bins for concentrates, each of approximately 300 tons capacity. At the bottom of each bin there are individual belt feeders that discharge onto a common conveyor belt, which in turn discharges to another belt that carries the concentrate onto a weightometer belt for weighing. Immediately after the weighing, the crushed oversize return from the roasters is added to the load on the belt and then the ground-up sweepings, lumps and roaster cleanings. An electromagnet at the end of this conveyor removes tramp iron from the feed. The belt discharges to a set of 30 by 12-in. rolls, which break up lumps or frozen chunks of concentrate, etc. Beneath the rolls there is a screw conveyor, which conveys the roll discharge to a

The two calcium sulfate minerals-gypsum and anhydrite-occur in many parts of the world, and gypsum has long been of economic importance in the family of industrial minerals. Gypsum, the dihydrate form of calcium sulfate (CaSO4•2H2O) and anhydrite, the anhydrous form (CaSO4) are frequently found in close association, and it is seldom that a calcium sulfate deposit will consist exclusively of one mineral or the other. Although known gypsum deposits are extensive, anhydrite makes up the largest part of total calcium sulfate reserves. However, it has very minor economic use, and most of the following discussion will be devoted to gypsum. Calcium sulfate is one of the principal constituents of evaporite deposits, and when pure, has the following composition: [Sulfur Combined Lime Trioxide Water (CaO) (SO,) (H2O) Gypsum 32.6% 46.5% 20.9% Anhydrite 41.2% 58.8% -] Deposits of pure gypsum or of pure anhydrite which are large enough to be considered commercial have never been found because of both the metastable relationship between the two minerals, and the presence of impurities such as calcium or magnesium carbonates, chlorides, other sulfate minerals, clay minerals, or silica. As a result most mine production of gypsum will range between 85 and 95% pure. Often it is used as mined, although in certain cases, one or more forms of mineral beneficiation are employed to upgrade the product. End Uses The largest use for gypsum is based upon the unique property which calcium sulfate has of readily giving up, or taking on, water of crystallization. With the application of a moderate amount of heat in a process known as calcining, gypsum is converted to plaster of paris (the hemihydrate of calcium sulfate, CaSO4 ½ H2O) which when mixed with water will set or harden as the calcium sulfate returns to the dihydrate form. This semifinished product, usually called stucco, is then manufactured into a large variety of plasters, wallboard, and block for construction use, or into plasters for industrial applications. About 75% of the gypsum used in the United States is calcined for these purposes. Uncalcined uses of gypsum are principally as a retarder for portland cement, as a soil conditioner, as a mineral filler, and other minor industrial applications. About 25% of the gypsum mined in the United States goes into these markets; however, in less developed countries where construction and other industrial uses may be quite limited, the use of uncalcined gypsum for portland cement retarder may well be the dominant-if not the only-market for the mineral. It has often been noted that calcium sulfate constitutes the world's largest reserve of sulfur, and minor use of both anhydrite and gypsum has been made to produce sulfuric acid or other sulfur compounds such as ammonium sulfate. However, because sulfur is readily available at lower cost from other sources, use of calcium sulfate has been limited to only a few locations where it could compete economically. No such use is reported in the United States at this time. Mineralogy Anhydrite, CaSO4 because of its geologically rapid conversion to gypsum, and relatively high solubility (about 0.2 g per 100 g H2O) is not often found outcropping in climates wet enough to support abundant vegetation except on steeply dipping slopes or other places where hydrated material is continuously removed. THE Chief Consolidated properties are situated in the Tintic mining district of Utah, being included in Juab and Utah Counties, about 70 miles south of Salt Lake City. The drilling referred to in this paper has been carried on in the Chief Consolidated No. 1 mine, the Gemini mine, and the Eureka Hill mine at Eureka, the Grand Central mine, above Mammoth, and the Apex Standard mine just south of Dividend. The occurrence of ore through the district is typically in lenses on bedding or breaks, and in connecting pipes, without accurate geometrical trend so that the ratio between the total length of development in drifts and crosscuts to the square feet of ore exposed is very high. A section of one of the western channels (Fig. 1) through the Tintic district, shows, roughly, the irregularities calling for excessive development work, so typical of the Tintic mines. This irregular trend of the ore constantly calls for excessive cutting up of the whole area for offshoots and the connecting links always present.. In the planning of prospecting and development, no regular system may be laid out without overlooking some orebodies or segments of orebodies. It was with these facts in mind that Cecil Fitch, the general manager of the Chief Consolidated Mining Co., decided that some method of drilling was the more feasible way of successfully cutting up and bringing about the discovery of ore believed to exist; yet this drilling had to compete with a great. margin of cost over crosscutting, as a crosscut in the Tintic district, even though barren, brings out geologic facts that, in many cases, are worth the price of the working itself. Diamond drills met with the success that might be expected in a district that has a reputation for the wear and loss of diamonds; after 6 or 8 months, this method was discarded on account of the high costs. Simultaneously, a small churn drill outfit was set up underground but a few shifts proved its inapplicability. At the same time, the ordinary hammer drill was usd to drive prospect holes with jointed steel.

Those who have followed the rapid progress in rock-dusting bituminous-coal mines must admit that opinion crystallized during the year just closed in support of this preventive of coal-dust explosions. Up to 1924 only one mining company in America practiced rock-dusting on a large scale, but during 1924 forty-two companies had adopted this safety measure, and the "boom" is expected to extend over the next two or three years. Alabama is represented by 1 company, Colorado by 3, Illinois by 4, Kentucky by 1, New Mexico by 4, Pennsylvania by 20, Utah by 8, and Wyoming by 1. A total of about 500 miles of entry has been dusted. Illinois leads with 275 miles of dusted entries and Pennsylvania holds second place with about 175 miles. In each case there is a sense of great security, not only on the part of the operator but by the miner as well. It is also interesting to note that during 1924 the compensation rating or inspection bureaus in twelve of our coal-producing states revised their rating schedules so that a credit would be given for rock-dusting. This credit ranges from 10 to 20 cents per $100 payroll. Recent drastic federal and state regulations approved by mine operators made rock-dusting compulsory in bituminous coal mines in Utah, beginning July 1, 1924. Legislative action favorable to rock-dusting may be expected in other states. Colorado has already proposed a change in its laws, and Pennsylvania, Maryland, Washington, and West Virginia are giving the matter consideration. If the rock-dusting problem is handled properly and proves to be entirely successful, no mining man of any standing will delay applying it in his mine. State legislation regarding this matter may or may not solve the problem. At present, the mining companies that are rock-dusting of their own choice are doing it carefully and thoroughly. In Utah, some are doing it conscientiously, trying to get what benefits can be obtained while others are reported to be doing it only to keep within state regulations. In any event, if we are to have new legislation, it is essential that the various states know what they are about and then, if possible, work for uniform regulations.

Vapov pressure data of solid and liquid alloys along with phase diagram data WERE employed in calculating the thermodynamic properties for the Ca-Zn system. Relations for the standard free energy of fortnation for the eight cornpounds were developed. ThE phase diagram for the Ca-Zn system as determined by Messing et a1.' is reproduced in Fig. 1. Earlier work on the phase diagram has been summarized by Hansen and Anderko2 and the very limited thermodynamic information for this system has been reviewed by Hultgren et a1.3 The heat of fusion for the compound CaZn2 has recently been determined to be 9260 cal per mole.4 Solubility data for calcium in zinc for the temperature range of 650" to 725°C were fitted by the relation and reported by Johnson and Dilloon5 In the present investigation zinc vapor pressure data were obtained by both the dewpoint and Knudsen methods in order to calculate the thermodynamic properties for liquid and solid alloys. The dewpoint method as employed in this work requires that only one of the components be significantly volatile, in this case zinc, and that the vapor pressure of pure zinc be known. For calculation purposes the vapor pressure data for pure zinc3 were fitted to the relations; for temperatures below 692.7K, the melting point of zinc. The corresponding free-energy relations for vaporization and sublimation of pure zinc are respectively. Some of the calculations also required knowledge of the free energy of fusion of zinc and calcium and the free energy for the 721°K allotropic transformation of calcium. The free energy of fusion of zinc was taken to be the difference between Eqs. [4] and [5], or The free energy of fusion and transition for calcium were based on the enthalpy values of 2040 and 222 cal per g-atom, respectively, as reported by Chiotti et al. 4 and the heat capacity data given by Hultgren et a1.3 and are represented by the relations, In the latter expression the difference in heat capacity between the a and 0 forms of calcium was neglected. MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES The metals used in preparing the alloys were Bunker Hill slab zinc, 99.99 pct pure, and Ames Laboratory calcium. The average impurities in the calcium in parts per million by weight, ppm, were N-17, H—77, Ba—216, Mg-15, Si—7, C—157, and Fe—9. The zinc was cleaned in dilute nitric acid and the calcium was used as received. The calcium was stored and handled in an argon-filled glove box and when removed from the dry box it was kept in an argon-filled desiccator. Tantalum was found to be a suitable alloy container. The Waelz process produces oxides of volatilizable metals from ores, metalliferous products and residues. The process was originally used for recovering zinc and lead, where tailings and residues containing those metals had accumulated at mines or smelters, but it is applicable for obtaining tin, arsenic or other volatilizable metals. It is useful when other methods of obtaining the metals from the ores or residues are too difficult or expensive or show too low a recovery. The Waelz process was developed in 1923 for the treatment of large calamine dumps in Upper Silesia, which showed zinc contents of 8 to 10 per cent. and lead contents up to 3 per cent. The rapid development of the process, from the first trials up to the plants now working or in course of erection, is shown in Fig. 1. The first industrial Waelz plant was started in 1925. BY taking advantage of the fundamental difference between screening and classification-namely, that specific gravity has no effect on screening but is one of the important factors in classification-a combination of the two may be used as a process of mineral concentration. Although this fact is not new, so far as is known it has had little or no commercial application. The scheme is not presented now as a process for producing finished products but rather as a preliminary operation rejecting part of the barren material from an ore before it is subjected to more costly treatment. That is largely the function of the new heavy-media concentration processes that have been widely accepted. Original installation costs for the present sink-float processes are relatively high, however, which confines their use to operations where large tonnages are handled. Sink-float has been successful on only the relatively coarse (approximately plus 10-mesh) portion of an ore, and it is in this same range that classification screening can function most satisfactorily. Theoretically, there is no upper limit to the size of particles that can be handled in a sink-float operation, but the degree of liberation in the very large pieces usually limits this. With classification screening, particles from 3/8 to 1/2 in. would be the largest that could be handled, but the lower range could be extended somewhat below 10 mesh. In order to take full advantage of the difference in specific gravities of the minerals being separated, sorting in the classifier should be under as extreme hindered-settling conditions as possible. Laboratory tests have been made on a galena ore and on an artificial mixture of quartz and magnesite to determine the separations that may be expected. Although more than one scheme may be followed, in these tests the separations were made by cutting the underflow from the classifier as a concentrate and then screening the overflow. The screen oversize was rejected as a tailing. Classification was done in a hindered-settling teeter column and screening was done by hand, using the standard [v2]series. THE occasional occurrence in metalliferous veins of rounded fragments of rock, matrix or ore, lying loose, embedded in clay, or enclosed in some kind of cement, may be attributed to four causes:¬ I. They have been washed in from the surface, or from an upper portion of the vein. II. They are of concretionary origin. III. They have been produced by movements in the country-rock or in the walls of the vein. IV. They have been found in situ, by the upward, downward or lateral flow of water in the vein itself. In this paper the word " conglomerate " is confined to a rock composed of rounded fragments or pebbles cemented together, as distinguished from a " breccia," in which the rock-fragments are angular. I. BOULDERS AND PEBBLES WHICH HAVE BEEN WASHED IN FROM THE SURFACE, OR FROM AN UPPER PORTION OF THE VEIN. In this type it is presupposed that the vein at onetime com¬municated by a fissure or open space with the surface, or with the upper portion from whence the fragments have been washed. One well-authenticated occurrence was described long ago by Fournet. Owing, no doubt, to later dislocations in the lode, pebbles from an old alluvium and sands containing titaniferous iron, as well as fragments of wood, were found in a vein at Huelgoët, in France. Screening by centrifugal force is a unique subject, for all vibrating screens, with but one exception, depend on gravity alone to pass material through a sizing mesh or screen cloth. Centrifugal screening is one of the greatest advancements made in screening since the development of vibrating screens. It makes possible sizing in a range previously im-practical by mechanical methods. The centrifugal screen is specially designed for fine sizing from No. 4 separations to finer than No. 100 separations. Centrifugal force provides a positive control of factors that make fine particle separation practical and effective as opposed to gravity which is a fixed force acting only in a fixed direction, The centrifugal screen provides a control of the force of material against the screening surface, and also controls the distance of departure of the material from the surface and its rate of return. The centrifugal screen has a rotating drum that becomes a natural fan blowing air outward through the material being screened and carrying float dust and fines through the apertures with it. Screening by centrifugal force is an unique subject, for with the exception of only one vibrating screen presently on the market, all vibrating screens depend upon gravity to pass material through a sizing mesh or screen cloth. This one screen that sizes by centrifugal force and utilizes gravity only to convey material along the screen, is the Symons V-Screen. The requirements of the industrial minerals industry to meet ever-increasing stringent fine sizing specifications by a practical mechanical method accentuates the weakness of gravity, a fixed force acting in a fixed direction, as a prime force for fine sizing. It was apparent a force other than gravity was needed. This led to the development of a centrifugal screen to meet modern demands for practical fine sizing operations. Gyratory-type screens in use today were originally designed in a day when a 1/4-in. separation was normally considered fine sizing and 1/8-in. separations were extremely fine sizing. Although gyratory-type screens are sometimes used for separating below 1/8-in., they are not practical screens for this purpose. They were not designed to do this type of work. A growing demand for a practical means of making positive mechanical separations in a range of from 1/8 in. downward led to the development of the vibrating screen. THE practical importance of a knowledge of the rates of diffusion of carbon and of alloying elements in steel has often been pointed out 1,13 This importance ties chiefly, though by no means only, in the study of carburizing and in the study of reactions involved in the eutectoid inversion in steel The present paper is one of a series in which the rates of diffusion of carbon and of alloying elements in y-Fe and their mutual effects are measured with precision The present paper reports the results of meas¬urements of diffusion coefficients D of manganese in -y-Fe over wide ranges of temperature, and concentration, and of the effect of carbon and impurities and of grain size upon these diffusion coefficients [$] Data on the rate of diffusion of manganese in y-Fe have been reported by Fry2 and by Paschke and Hauttmann 3 Claussen4 calculated the diffusion coefficient D from Fry's data as 3 X 10-10 sq cm per sec at 960°, which will be shown to be incorrect by many orders of magnitude Paschke and Hauttmann gave a rough value of 9 6 X 10-8 sq cm per sec at 1400° Neither of these workers considered the variation of D with concentration and with temperature, and neither studied the effect of carbon METHOD AND MATERIALS Method -The method employed is identical with that used earlier 5 Owing to the volatility of manganese and the consequent loss of manganese from the outer surfaces of the welded diffusion bars, these surfaces were discarded The diffusion anneals were performed in argon, except one (test 18) in which hydrogen was employed for purposes noted below The temperatures reported are accurate to about 3° and constant within I°C , the diffusion times are reported to the nearest half hour The specimens were furnace-cooled after the diffusion anneal at about 2° per min Layers, usually 0 004 in thick, parallel to the welded interface, were machined from the specimens after the diffusion anneal and analyzed for manganese to 0 01 per cent Mn, the distances of these layers from the interface was measured to ±0 0002 in The concentration-penetration curves obtained were analyzed by both the Grube and the Matano solutions e The D values calculated by these two methods do not differ appreciably 5 The Grube solution was used except in tests in which the effect of concentration upon D was greater than 50 per cent, in such cases the Matano method, which explicitly provides for the variation of D with concentration,1 is the more reliable In general, the number of layers machined from the zones of variable composition were large enough to permit the use of the average layer composition as that of the center of the layer In 3 of the 30 tests, however, this is not justified, and the D values
