The Grace mine magnetite deposit, located 2 miles north of Morgantown in Berks County, Pennsylvania, was discovered in 1948 by an aerial magnetometer survey. It is situated on the southern border of the Triassic lowlands section of the Piedmont province. Cambrian sandstones, shales, and limestones overlie Precambrian crystalline rock and were folded and thrust-faulted during the late Paleozoic Appalachian revolution. Late Triassic continental sediments were deposited on the deformed basement rocks and were intruded by Late Triassic diabase dikes and sills before regional tilting and normal faulting occurred. The Grace mine magnetite ore is characteristic of the Cornwall type. The ore has replaced a Cambrian limestone lens isolated between Triassic diabase footwall and Triassic sedimentary rock hanging wall. The ore body is roughly tabular in shape, dips 20° to 30°NE and plunges about 20°N80°E. The ore is granular, fine- to medium-grained, typically consisting of unevenly distributed magnetite in a matrix of light green to white serpentine gangue. Magnetite is the major ore mineral, pyrite and chalcopyrite are common accessory minerals, and pyrrhotite occurs locally. Sphalerite, marcasite, galena, hematite, digenite, and goethite are uncommon. Serpentine, talc, and chlorite are the major gangue minerals; calcite and dolomite are common, and phlogopite, tremolite, and biotite are present locally. Apatite is a common accessory; sphene is rare. Calcium-magnesium silicates were formed first by contact metamorphism of impure limestone by the intruding diabase. Later, the silicates were altered hydrothermally to the serpentine- talc-chlorite assemblage now present. Magnetite, the first ore mineral, formed by replacing serpentine and was followed by pyritepyrrhotite and then by chalcopyrite-galenasphalerite. Marcasite, secondary pyrite, goethite, and hematite are secondary minerals resulting from alteration of pyrrhotite and magnetite. It is estimated that confining pressure was about 1500 bars and the temperature range was 500° to 675°C during ore formation.

THE following note describing the behavior of copper under rather unusual conditions is offered here for its suggestiveness rather than as a complete study of the question. The examinations described were made because of a request for information concerning the embrittlement of copper when heated in a molten salt bath (sodium chloride) for the purpose of cleaning it, as well as for softening it. It is well known that metals may be rendered very brittle by electrolytic action, in aqueous solutions, in all probability by the action of nascent hydrogen, and it was suspected that perhaps the embrittlement of the copper by means of the molten salt was produced in a somewhat similar manner. It was found that the copper was in contact with iron (or steel) while immersed in the molten salt, through the occasional use of an iron stirring rod, iron forceps for handling the pieces, and an iron pot for containing the fused salt. In the electrochemical potential series iron and copper stand some distance apart, copper being electronegative to the iron. Assuming that the two metals bear a similar relation to each other, when immersed in a bath of molten salt, as they do in an aqueous solution, they would be expected to form a galvanic couple, the copper being the cathode. By this means the copper might be embrittled, as often happens in aqueous solutions, by the action of the liberated hydrogen. In this case, however, the embrittlement must be attributed to some other agent than hydrogen. To demonstrate how copper may be embrittled under these conditions, two small rods, one of copper and the other of mild steel, approximately 3/8 in. (9.5 mm.) in diameter, were immersed in a bath of sodium chloride that had been heated somewhat above its fusion point (melting point of sodium chloride is 819° C.) and an electromotive force of approximately 6 volts from a storage battery was impressed upon the system. MY YEAR OF SERVICE as president of the A.I.M.E. came at a time when the mineral industry had suffered severely because of disturbed economic conditions throughout the world. The Institute, an integral part of this industry, had been similarly affected. Its membership and revenues decreased; it was confronted by problems of retrenchment at a time when its vigorous operation was especially important to its members, of some moment to the mining industry, and of value to the nation. Throughout the last year, the recession of activity in our industry continued with slight abatement. Your Board accordingly exercised such economy within the Institute as was possible without impairment of essential functions. It endeavored to aid in sustaining the morale of members, their sense of professional unity, and their interest in maintaining research and the interchange of scientific and technologic data upon which the progress of our industry depends. Effort was made to assist in the difficult task of finding employment for needy members; our endeavors have met with some success.

THE Comstock Lode is in Storey County, Nevada, and extends in a north and south direction through the towns of Virginia City and Gold Hill, with a total length of 4.27 miles. Its mines have produced silver and gold to a known value exceeding $400,- 000,000 since 1859, when the work first began. More than $126.000,000 was paid in dividends by the mining companies, although much more than this was probably realized from the ore, because many milling companies were independent companies owned by the directors and superintendents of the mines. The milling companies' contracts called for an extraction of only 65 per cent and, as much of the ore was worth $100 a ton and up- ward, they must have recovered substantial amounts for their own accounts over and above this guarantee. Gold was discovered in the spring of 1850 by a party of Normons bound for California. The discovery was made at the mouth of Gold canyon near Dayton, on the Carson River, about 10 miles south of Virginia City.

MUCH progress in -blast-furnace construction and in the manufacture of firebrick for furnace linings has been made since the publication of Bulletin 130 of the U. S. Bureau of Mines on "Blast-Furnace Breakouts, Explosions and Slips, and Methods of Prevention," by F. H. Willcox in 1917. At the time of publishing this report comparatively little information was available to blast-furnace men as to the fundamental facts relating to the character of blast-furnace refractories. Some of the accepted theories of only a few years ago have been completely reversed. The mortality of blast-furnace linings used to be so great that nearly every furnace plant had one or more complete linings in the brick shed ready for use in case of a lining suddenly "going out"; it was generally accepted that a furnace could not "keep her lines" more than two or three years at best, and often a hot spot in the shell would develop, or a breakout occur in the hearth or bosh within a year or two after blowing in on a new lining. In some respects these frequent relinings were not so detrimental as to he a complete loss because they afforded opportunities to take advantage of advances in blast-furnace practice. At present the cost of relining has greatly increased, but the life of a lining has also increased. Anything less than five years on a lining is now considered a short blast.

IN all special branches of the chemical and metallurgical industries, in which large electric furnaces became necessary for carrying out new processes or for the improvement of old ones, the development of the electric furnaces took place on much the same lines. The endeavors to make a success of a new idea brought forth many ingenious designs, which, however, almost without exception, furnished the proof that the safest and shortest way to practical success is the utmost simplicity of construction of the necessary apparatus. Our knowledge of the qualities of materials for building electric furnaces and of the constituents of the furnace-charges, especially their electric conductivity and their chemical affinity . towards one another at high temperatures, is still far from being complete, and from this fact we must conclude that the smaller the number of elements in the construction of a furnace, the fewer the number of unreliable factors both in the construction and in the operation of the electric furnace. This conclusion deserves special attention when an electric furnace for making steel has to be chosen from the constantly growing number of inventions, inasmuch as the chief con¬stituent of steel, the element iron, is a substance which in its liquid phase has so great an affinity fir those elements which are to be removed from the charge, that it is very difficult to comply with the following conditions: 1, to beat the refining-slag to the highest point of its chemical activity ; to prevent the iron from entering the slaw, or, where this cannot be done, to make it enter so that it finally appears in the end-product

From presently available components a portable, rugged, reliable apparatus can be built which will be able to detect methane concentrations of 0.1% and lower in air. Sensitivity and design considerations of the apparatus are given. Ways to build even simpler and cheaper apparatus in the future are indicated. Traditionally the problem of detecting and monitoring the presence of dangerous gases present in small concentrations in air has been a difficult one. Whether canaries,' or sophisticated chemical or thermal conductivity methods are used, they seem to be either slow, cumbersome, or otherwise not completely satis factory. A seemingly natural way of gas detection is to measure the strength of absorption undergone by light of a wavelength that the gas to be detected absorbs. This method has been difficult to apply in view of the low power output over a narrow wavelength range in the infrared from traditional glow bar light sources. Besides, the apparatus to select such a narrow band of wavelengths is quite costly and complex. The use of a laser solves these problems simultaneously. Although a variety of lasers are available to detect a variety of gases (such as carbon monoxide or methane) whose early detection would be desirable, this paper deals exclusively with the use of lasers for methane detection. ABSORPTION SPECTRUM OF METHANE IN AIR The absorption spectrum of pure methane is very well known.2-4 There are four fundamental vibrations, all occurring in the infrared of which only two absorb strongly. They occur at 3.3 µ and 7.7 µ. The absorption spectrum is quite complicated due to the fact that the methane molecule can rotate in a variety of rotational quantum states. These rotational states are furthermore split by anharmonic forces such as the Coriolis force.4 When methane is present in air at atmospheric pressure, much of the very fine structure due to the anharmonic force is washed out since the pressure broadening is of the same magnitude as the splitting due to anharmonicity. For most of the spectrum at 3.3 µ, the rotational lines are typically separated by 0.01µ while the individual linewidth is 0.0001 µ. It is thus very important that the laser emit at a wavelength that coincides with one of these rotational lines. This paper is concerned with possible transport mechanisms which occur during segregated burning (i.e., burning in an oil reservoir in which the oil-bearing formation is overlain by a "clean" porous zone containing only gas). ,Two analytical models are presented. In the first, burning is assumed to occur at the gas-oil interface, and the dominant mechanism is taken to be the rate at which oxygen diffuses to the interface. The second model assumes that combustion occurs within the clean zone, with the dominant mechanism being the mechanism of fuel deposition from the oil-bearing formation to the clean zone. ,Comparison of the results of the analyses with limited experimental data indicates that the latter mechanism is much more plausible. Both models are idealized representations of the actual process and are somewhat conjectural, however, owing to the lack of more definitive laboratory or field data. INTRODUCTION In recent years there has been considerable theoretical and experimental research directed toward understanding the recovery of crude oil by underground combustion. Although two different recovery schemes have been proposed, known as forward and reverse combustion, it is only forward combustion that shows promise of becoming a practical recovery technique.17 Most of the analyses of the forward combustion process have considered it to be pistonlike; i.e., oil is displaced by a vertical combustion zone which, with its ensuing gases, pushes die oil forward as the flame front is propagated through the reservoir.l-8,ll,l2,14-16 However, information gained in field pilot studies indicates that, at least to a certain extent, forward combustion proceeds in a segregated manner in oil reservoirs.10 An ideal segregated system is one in which the oil-bearing formation is overlain by a "clean" porous zone containing only gas. The location of the combustion zone in such a system is not immediately evident, although combustion is believed to occur either at the gas-oil interface or within the clean zone. In either case, the combustion zone may be horizontal and it moves in parallel rather than in series with the produced oil. The purpose of this paper is to explore the likely mechanisms by which segregated burning can occur, and to determine the sensitivity of the resulting models to changes in various physical parameters. Two governing mechanisms are considered: the case of a horizontal combustion zone at the gas-oil interface with the rate of combustion governed by the rate at which oxygen diffuses to the interface, and the case of combustion within the clean zone with the combustion process controlled by the transport of fuel from the oil-bearing formation to the clean zone. Both models are somewhat hypothetical and involve considerable simplification of the actual process. However, the results allow some preliminary understanding of segregated burning which is useful in the absence of more definitive laboratory or field pilot data.

IN reviewing the field of mineral industry education last year reference was made to recent assertions, mostly emanating from sources not in a position to know the facts, that mining engineers as a class are disappearing. Attention might also then have been called to a statement that appeared in Engineering News, August 11, 1892 (p. 130), ". . . the great absolute decline in number of mining graduates, which last amounts almost to a complete abandonment of mining engineering as a distinct branch of study." Gardner[$] THE present known petroleum reserves are limited, and unless important new fields are discovered the Nation will be dependent, in the not too distant future, upon imports or upon synthetic liquid fuels to supplement domestic petroleum supplies. As a national defense measure, it would appear desirable to develop a substitute source of liquid fuels within the borders of the country if new discoveries of petroleum should prove disappointing. Congress undoubtedly had this in mind when it passed the Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act (78th Congress, approved April 5, 1944). The act directed the Bureau of Mines to construct and operate demonstration plants for producing synthetic liquid fuels from coal and oil shale, and from forestry and agricultural products. As a part of this program, the Bureau of Mines has built a demonstration plant at Anvil Points, near Rifle, Colo., for retorting the oil shale, and has developed a mine to supply the plant with oil shale. At the beginning of mining operations, the physical qualities of the oil shale, which would have a bearing upon the selection of mining methods and practices for exploiting the deposits, were largely unknown. A comprehensive mining-research program has been set up to determine the best methods and practices to follow to obtain the lowest overall practicable mining cost for producing the oil shale on a large scale. Unusually low mining costs will be necessary for shale oil to be produced commercially. Consideration now is being given to exploiting a series of flat-lying beds 70 ft thick by a room-and-pillar method of three benches with the advance heading at the top. This report is one of a series giving the results obtained in research on mining problems. INTRODUCTION The structure and physical qualities of the oil shale indicate that the 70-ft interval of the oil-shale measure can be safely mined in open stopes; studies indicate that this method would be the most economical one to use.1 As labor will be a major item of expense, the largest equipment that could be operated efficiently in the workings would be required to obtain the lowest practicable mining cost. It was therefore desirable to know the maximum safe span of unsupported rooms and the size of pillars necessary to support the overburden. This paper describes the work done at the Columbia School of Mines Barodynamic Laboratory in determining the maximum safe unsupported roof spans and the minimum safe pillar dimensions for the oil-shale mine at Rifle, Colo.

THE Board of Directors of the Institute has authorized the appointment of a committee to draw up rules of procedure under which awards can be made from time to time to petroleum engineers for outstanding contributions to the art of finding and producing oil and gas. These awards will 11e sponsored by the Petroleum Division and are the first recognition by any professional society of outstanding achievement in "oil mining." They will be in the form of either a gold medal, scholar- ship, or other suitable prize. The awards will be financed from the income of the Anthony F. Lucas Memorial Fund, which was started about fifteen years ago, shortly after' his death, by admirers of Captain Lucas.

Since the U. S. Metals Refining Co. works was established, around the turn of the century, near the town which is now called Carteret, N. J., it has grown to be a major producer of refined copper and the main source of that special brand known as "oxygen-free high-conductivity copper." Owing to the complex metallurgical problems arising from handling a variety of raw materials such as copper concentrate from Matahambre, Cuba, copper and brass scrap from the New York area, and domestic blister copper, the organization is geared from top management down through its 2000 employes to maintain a high degree of flexibility in plant operation. The Company is a subsidiary of The American Metal Co. Charges for the smelter furnaces, one reverberatory furnace and one blast furnace, are made up in. bedding bins so that they may be tailored to the production of a constant grade of blister copper. The reverberatory furnace smelts the .sulphide charge, which may be a blend of ten different materials but principally the Cuban concentrate, and the matte from the process is poured into a converter. This reverberatory is 80 by 20 ft, silica lined with a slag bottom, fired by pulverized coal, and continuously side-charged from the top by bottom-dump cars which keep the side walls covered. It produces a 40 to 50 per cent copper matte. The fuel-charge ratio is 4.35 tons of solid charge per ton of coal. The furnace has a capacity of 10,000 tons of charge per month and produces from 5000 to 6000 tons of slag per month which must be disposed of. About 5000 tons of converter slag is produced monthly and returned molten to the reverberatory furnace. The paper describes an improved process for the recovery, purification, and concentration of copper values from acidic dump leach liquors. The process employs a new liquid ion exchange material (LIX® 64 reagent) capable of separating copper values from iron and other impurities common to dump leach liquors in the typical pH range of 1.4-3.0. Properties and performance of the reagent are discussed. Design scale-up information for both pilot plants and commercial installations, including preliminary economics, are presented. Economic considerations include the production of electrolytic copper from the purified copper aqueous concentrate. INTRODUCTION Since the commercial acceptance of the liquid ion exchange process in the mineral processing industry, it has been predicted that a wide selection of chemical reagents to efficiently and economically separate many metals in solution under a wide range of conditions would be commercially available. Several years ago, General Mills began a basic research and development program to determine if it were possible to develop a reagent to extract economically metallic ion from existing process streams. Progress toward reaching this objective was reported in late 1963, when development of quantities of LIX -63 reagent, a highly selective reagent for the extraction of copper, was introduced. The properties of this reagent are described in a previous paper.' The development work with this reagent indicated that perhaps the largest potential application for a copper extractant, the treatment of acidic dump leach liquors, would not be economically possible with LIX-63 because of limitations of the reagent to extract copper below a pH of 3.0. The relatively small pH adjustment required with LIX-63 would result in a significant processing cost and the undesirable precipitation of ferric hydroxide from the liquor. This pointed to the need for another copper extractant which would extract copper from dump leach liquors without pH adjustment. General Mills was successful in synthesizing a molecule which does not have the pH limitation of the LIX-63, yet possesses the selectivity-solubility properties required of a metallic extractant. The resulting LIX-64 reagent broadens the pH range from which copper can be effectively extracted and separated from other metallic impurities. Of special significance is the fact that the reagent, LIX-64 was developed by combining the technical requirements of a specific problem in hydro-metallurgy with theoretical organic and physical chemical principles.

As expected from similar crystal structures and favorable atomic size factors, titanium, vanadium, and molybdenum are completely soluble in one another above the transformation temperature of titanium. The fl phase parameters of the continuous solid solution are shown graphically. Limiting compositions for retained fl phase have been determined. VANADIUM and molybdenum both have body-centered-cubic structures at all temperatures and, from the atomic diameter comparison factor, 3.9 pct, would be expected to form a complete series of solid solutions. The existence of complete solubility has been confirmed by work' at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Furthermore, vanadium and molybdenum have favorable atomic size factors to form complete binary solid solutions with the B phase, high temperature form of titanium, which also has body-centered-cubic structure. Pietro-kowsky and Duwez' and Hansen et al." have established the existence of the complete series of solutions in these binary systems. It would be logical, therefore, to expect that p-titanium, vanadium, and molybdenum would be completely soluble in one
