WE are approaching the depletion of our principal source of iron ore-the Great Lakes deposits, which have provided 85% of the nation's requirements for the past fifty years. This situation presents a threat to our standard of living and our position as a world power. Fortunately, in the Great Lakes region there are still tremendous quantities of potential iron ore in the form of the low iron, high silica rock called taconite. The economical extraction of iron from taconite will insure our future steel supply if no new deposits available to the United States even in time of war are discovered. In the new process presented here, the iron is reduced directly by a simple method and then separated from the silica. The product is "feed," not to the blast furnace, but to the steel plant. This process requires very much less plant, less physical and chemical treatment, and less fuel and auxiliary materials than the conventional ore concentration-blast furnace method. In my opinion, this new, fundamentally different approach offers a better hope for the solution of the iron ore problem.

KNOWLEDGE of the Cu-Zn constitution diagram was critically examined in 1944 by G. V. Ray-nor,1 who suggested the diagram reproduced in Fig. 1 as the best evaluation of available data. No pertinent work on the constitution has been published since that time, although a number of authors have discussed transformation kinetics and theory. Despite the large amount of work that has been done on the constitution of these industrially important and scientifically interesting alloys, minor uncertainties still exist. For example, it is still not possible to say definitely whether a two-phase region exists between the ordered and disordered forms of the 8 phase. A careful re-examination of the phase boundaries in this part of the diagram was therefore undertaken. Two methods were selected for the new investigation—quantitative metallography for the higher temperatures and precision lattice parameter measurement for lower temperatures. Because of the relatively narrow two-phase regions flanking the ß phase in these alloys, quantitative metallography is particularly suited for their examination, since the relative amounts of the two phases are very sensitive to their compositions. The method, however, is useless below about 350°C because of the inadequate resolution of the two constituents. Below 400°, however, the X-ray diffraction method is applicable, although it is of somewhat lower sensitivity in this system. The changes of composition that occur during quenching from above about 500°C entirely vitiate X-ray measurements at room temperature though they do not affect metallographic area measurements. The two methods overlap and supplement each other admirably. Both methods depend on the attainment of equilibrium composition of the two phases in a more or less intimate mixture and thus avoid the difficult problems of nucleation and long range diffusion involved in the conventional metallographic bracketing method. The alloys were melted from a master alloy made from re-electrolyzed cathode copper and Horsehead 99.99 pct Zn. Melting was done under a cover of either borax or charcoal and the alloys cast into a 7/8 in. sq graphite mold for the a-ß alloys or a 3/8 in. diam cylindrical graphite mold for the ß-? alloys. The a-ß alloys were rolled at 750°C to 5/8 in. sq; annealed for 24 hr at 800°C and quenched; then rolled and swaged at 200°C to 3/8 in. diam rods, annealed 24 hr at 200°C, quenched and cold rolled 2 pct reduction. This treatment was intended to obtain a small grain size and to produce many nuclei of the minor phase for growth on subsequent heat treatment. The unworkable ß-? alloys were given preliminary treatment by sealing in Vycor tubes in vacuum and annealing for 4 hr at 800°C followed by cooling in air. Samples of homogenized alloys were checked spectrographically for impurities, but the principal components were determined on samples subsequent to heat treatment. The impurities analyzed averaged approximately as follows: Ag, 0.0002 pct; Fe, 0.004; Si, 0.0008; Cd, 0.005; Mg, 0.0002; and Pb, 0.002. For metallography, samples of appropriate composition were cut into rods 5/8 in. long, sealed in pyrex tubes in vacuum and annealed for eight weeks at temperatures of 470°C and below, two weeks at 480°, 500°, and 600°C, and 4 hr at 700°C, followed by quenching in cold water. The desirability of bringing about greater uniformity in specifications governing iron and steel is generally recognized, and has found expression within recent years, in the efforts of numerous technical societies in that direction. When the International Association for Testing Materials was organized at Zurich in 1895, a committee was appointed, charged as follows: " On the basis of existing specifications, to seek methods and means for the introduction of international specifications for testing and inspecting iron and steel of all kinds." The American representation on this international committee consisted originally of five, and now of eight members. In view of the magnitude and importance of the subject, the Executive Committee of the American Section of the International Association for Testing Materials, since incorporated as the American Society for Testing Materials, appointed a committee of 34 members, including the American members of the above-named international committee, to frame standard American specifications for iron and steel. This committee reported on specifications for (1) Structural Steel for ridges and Ships; (2) Structural Steel for Buildings; (3) Open-Hearth Boiler-Plate and Rivet-Steel; (4) Steel Rails; (5) Steel Splice-Bars; (6) Steel Axles; (7) Steel Tires; (8) Steel Forgings; (9) Steel Castings ; (10) Wrought-Iron. These specifications were designed to be fairly representa-tive of the best current American practice, and were adopted by letter-ballot of the Society in August, 1901. The leading engineering societies have participated at various times in the discussion of these specifications and have lent valuable assistance through the appointment of special committees on like, or closely related, subjects. ATHOUGH the magnesium industry in this country is about thirty years old, not until American industry began to amaze the rest of the world and confound our enemies with the extent and variety of our war production did the industry begin to come into its own. At the outset of the war, only three companies were producing and fabricating magnesium in this country. Today, about sixty companies are producing, casting, forging, extruding, rolling, and stamping this lightweight champion of metals. Experience in alloying, processing. and fabricating the metal gained during the war years is now being translated into hundreds of civilian peacetime applications. In no sense should magnesium be considered as a substitute for other metals. It has come into popular favor because If many unique properties in addition to is being the lightest known structural metal. INTRODUCTION SINCE 1921, when Hull' discovered that cobalt can exist in the face-centered cubic and hexagonal close-packed modifications, the transitions that occur in cobalt have been extensively studied. It is generally agreed that on heating the hexagonal lattice changes to the cubic structure at temperatures ranging from 400 to 500°C although considerable doubt exists as to the exact temperature. Data concerning the temperature of the transformation on cooling are much less concordant and their interpretation has not been satisfactory. The study is further complicated by the fact that many investigators have reported the existence of a high temperature allotropic change in the range 850 to 1020°C, at which the cubic lattice reverts to the hexagonal modification. The transition on cooling, which has been reported as occurring at various temperatures from approximately 400 to 100°C, is of particular interest. Troiano and Greninger2 have recently suggested and considered the possibility of allotropic transformations occurring in pure metals by a shear-type, diffusionless (martensite) transformation. The case of cobalt was specifically discussed and certain observations of previous investigators evaluated in terms of this type of transformation. Table 1 briefly outlines the methods and results of previous investigators of the transformation temperatures of cobalt. MATERIALS AND METHODS The major portion of this investigation was performed with cobalt sheet containing a total of 0.2 pct impurities with carbon present to the extent of 0.1 pct. After melting in an induction furnace under an atmosphere of hydrogen, the carbon content analyzed 0.03 pct. Some observations were repeated with hydrogen reduced cobalt compresses analyzing 99.9 pct pure. No significant variations in results were observed employing the as-received sheet, the remelted stock, or the cobalt compresses. Filings for X ray diffraction analysis were sealed in evacuated glass ampoules. Pyrex glass tubing was used for temperatures below 600°C and for higher temperatures clear fused quartz was satisfactory. After appropriate heat treatment at various temperatures, the specimen ampoules were furnace cooled, air cooled or quenched by crushing under distilled water. This allowed a range of cooling velocities from less than one degree C per sec to greater than 1,000°C per sec. X ray diffraction patterns were taken with a Debye camera and filtered characteristic cobalt K-alpha radiation. The proportion of the existing phases was roughly approximated by visual examina-

The Rocky Mountain region is defined with some variations for different purposes or by different organizations. For oil and gas development, Wyoming, Montana, Colorado, northwestern New Mexico, and Utah are included in the order of their apparent importance. Portions of adjoining states, such as North and South Dakota, Nebraska, Arizona, Nevada, and Idaho, arc attributary to this region, but have little or no oil or gas production. Nebraska and New Mexico are considered separately (see pp. 412 and 415), and most of the discussion in this report will be confined to Colorado, Montana, and Wyoming. Utah has produced about 200,000 bbl. of oil from the San Juan and Virgin fields, which are isolated and shut in at present. The Clay Basin field in northeastern Utah produces natural gas and distillate, and the Farnham field in central Utah produces carbon dioxide gas. Other Utah areas of some interest are listed in Table I. The Cedar Creek (Baker-Glendive) field in southeastern Montana extends into North Dakota, but is listed under Montana. The other states are in the main wildcat areas, and exploration in 1944 was at a minimum. However, geological and geophysical parties are reviewing them for further testing. Oil production in Colorado, Montana and Wyoming was 459,000 bbl. more than in 1943. Increases of 713,000 bbl. in Colarado and 731,000 bbl. in Montana offset a loss of 985,000 bbl. in Wyoming. This was the first decline in Wyoming since 1938. Field production figures and state totals are given in Table I. Total drilling activities in these three states and Utah increased from 687 wells making 1,442,511 ft. of hole in 1943 to 916 wells making 2,245,803 it. in 1944. Wildcat drilling increased from 163 wells making 331,193 ft. of hole in 1943 to 171 wells making 389,144 it. in 1944. These figures include all drilling wells making footage, not starts or completions, and represent an all-time high in drilling. The year 1944 witnessed the greatest concentration of seismograph activity that the region has had. The Rocky Mountain Oil Scouts Association reported that in 1943, the previous peak year, 91 crew months of work were performed; in 1944, the time was 254 crew months. About 67 per cent of the work was in Wyoming, 18 per cent in Montana, and 12 per cent in Colorado. Twenty-three blocks totaling 400,000 acres were reported assembled in Colorado, and 161 blocks totaling 4,000,000 acres in Wyoming. Information about other states was not given. Fourteen unit agreements were approved by the Department of the Interior, as compared with 13 in 1943. The 1944 agreements were all in Wyoming. Recrystallization of aluminum single crystals after plastic extension is carefully studied in relation to the structure of the deformed matrix. The shapes of the new grains are analyzed with regard to slip planes and to the presence or absence of deformation bands. A mechanism by which the orientations of the grains are related to the parent lattice is described. EXPERIMENTS previously reported&apos; have been extended to develop some of the characteristics of the new crystals which are formed on annealing axially strained crystals whose deformational characteristics had been documented with special care. Thus, the presence of deformation bands affects the growth contours of the crystals, some of the strained crystals produced single crystals anew, and some, polycrystals, on annealing, while others merely "recovered" or "polygonalized" after the 600°C annealing treatment generally adopted in these tests. In the matter of orientational relationships between new crystals and the strained matrix, the present experiments have added little to previous experience, which had demonstrated great variety in the range of orientations encountered and no simple theory or correlation. For example, there has been ample evidence for the predominance in various face-centered cubic metals of a favored orientational relationship; viz., a rotation of 30° to 40° around a <1ll> axis, between grains growing in a matrix with a strong single orientation texture and the matrix itself.&apos;-&apos; This reorientation has been interpreted by various investigators in support of both the "oriented nucleation" and the "oriented growth" hypothesis. In the case of axially extended single crystals of aluminum, no general relationship, such as the one stated above, can be used to correlate the orientations of the recrystallized grains with that of the original crystal. Thus, Carpenter and Elama and Burgers and Basart7 were content to assume that the orientational relationships so developed were random in nature. Mathewson, however, in the Campbell Lecture of 1943 "rgued on the basis of <112> slip that a complex strain, chiefly characterized by rotation around a variable axis in the slip plane combined with a principal rotation around the pole of the slip plane, could be responsible for such devious relationships. Nevertheless, owing to the limited data now available dealing with orientational relationships between new grains and the single crystals strained in tension from which they have recrystallized, no adequate examination of the above generalization could be made. Here, there is the disturbing preliminary condition that any desired orientational relationship may be expressed by means of two rotations about mutually perpendicular axes, so the process lacks a certain critical flavor and any successful choice of axes meeting certain theoretical requirements could be replaced by another differently selected pair. With this reservation clearly in mind the process of double rotations, as previously indicated, was used to relate the orientations of the single crystals which grew out of the strained single crystalline matrix and was construed as certain evidence in favor of the theory of incongruent shearing action proposed by Mathewsons as a necessary element in the (111) slip process with close-packed metals. INTRODUCTION Conditions for formation of porphyry copper deposits appear to have been propitious in the Appalachian orogen from the end of Precambrian into Middle Ordovician, and again from Middle Devonian into Mississippian. In the Appalachians we can now record the evolution of a porphyry copper province within a developing orogen, one that reached metamorphic and structural maturity by the end of Devonian. Fig. 15, after Irwin and Coleman (1972), locates that portion of the Appalachian orogen included in this study, and Fig. 16 illustrates general geology of the area. Deposits mentioned in Table 3 and in the text are shown in Fig. 16. Data presented summarize personal observations by the author, published descriptions of specific areas noted in the bibliography, and abstracts from Provincial assessment files. Sources of previously published data are acknowledged. Few comprehensive descriptions of individual porphyry copper deposits in this area exist, so much of the data presented is new to the literature. Porphyry mineralization has, for this chapter, been restricted to porphyry copper de- posits, although porphyry molybdenum de- posits (Clark, 1972) are also shown in Fig. 16 (Hollister, et al., 1974). Copper- molybdenum and tungsten-molybdenum skarns are also omitted to simplify discu sion, though each is known in the area studied. Gaspe Copper is included, however; min- eralization in this deposit is present in the intrusion as well as in the skarn adjacent (Bell and Scott, 1954). Porphyry deposits listed in Table 3 are included because of some important feature, although other deposits have been reported (e.g., Kirkham and Soregaroli, 1975 ) . Clearly, no table now compiled could be complete. The pace of exploration insures that new occurrences will probably be found. Summaries of features exhibited by intrusions shown in Table 3 should remain valid, however, since they appear representative and are based on an adequate number of deposits in the area studied. Paleozoic porphyry copper prospects (shown in Fig. 16) are more common, apparently, in the northeastern part of the orogen, rarely having been found south of Catheart or west of the Logan Line. Occurrences of molybdenum and other associated lithophile elements are, however, known to the south and west as well as further north. Killeen and Newman (1965), King (1970),

The purpose of this paper is to further the understanding of reservoir response to hot-water injection by desuribing a two-dimensional, mathematical model of the process. Key assumptions are that no gas phase is present, and that the injected fluid reaches thermal equilibrium instantaneously with the reservoir fluids and sand. The resulting system of three partial differential equations is solved simultaneously through the use of a "leap-frog" application of standard alternating direction implicit methods for the solution of the mass-balance equations and the method of characteristics for solution of the energy-balance equation. The utility of the mathematical model is demonstrated by comparing numerical and analytic temperature distributions for hot-water bank injection and by comparing calculated with observed field behavior. Additional calculations show that hot waterfioding can recover significantly more oil than cold waterflooding, and that a hot-water bank recovers, with less energy input, nearly as much oil us continuous injection. Introduction Consistent field success with hot fluid injection processes requires good reservoir description and a thorough understanding of recovery mechanisms. The latter is fostered by a combination of well designed experimental studies and physically sound mathematical modeling. The purpose of this paper is to further the understanding of reservoir response to hot-water injection by describing a two-dimensional mathematical technique, indicating its validity, and demonstrating its utility for studying the effects of reservoir and operating parameters. Published experimental studies of hot fluid injection processes are few." Even if extensive data were available, two considerations discourage exclusive reliance on laboratory or field work. First, because of the severity of scaling requirements," laboratory results must be interpreted with care. Second, because of the one-shot nature of field experiments — injectivity/productivity tests and pilot floods—results seldom are available over the desired range of operating conditions. These factors emphasize the need for devoting attention to mathematical modeling to complement laboratory and field work. Through the use of mathematical models, scaling uncertainties can be bridged and response can be predicted for unique combinations of reservoir and operating conditions. Numerous mathematical models developed during recent years enable us to calculate temperature distributions, thermal efficiency (or conversely, fraction of heat lost), and oil recovery behavior for hot fluid injection. Ramey" and Spillette&apos; recently have provided reviews of these methods. Most models have concentrated on predicting temperature distributions and thermal efficiency; few have been directed at predicting oil recovery.&apos;."1° Although these techniques are useful for estimating effects of reservoir parameters and operating conditions on process performance, results are limited by the assumptions made and by the methods of coupling independently solved fluid-flow and energy-balance equations. A computer-based method is presented for predicting total reservoir response to hot-water injection that obviates most simplifying assumptions. The model simulates fluid flow and heat transfer in two dimensions within a vertical cross-section spanning the oil sand and adjacent unproductive strata. Known numerical procedures are used to solve the governing partial differential equations. The mathematical model handles the effects of reservoir heterogeneity, gravity, capillarity, relative permeability and temperature-dependent fluid properties. In addition, a wide range of operating conditions can be modeled, including hot-water followed by cold-water injection. Mathematical Description of Hot-Water Injection Key assumptions in the mathematical model for hot-water injection are that (1) no gas phase is present and (2) the injected fluid reaches thermal equilibrium instantaneously with the reservoir fluids and sand. Relative permeability and capillary pressure are assumed independent of temperature. Darcy&apos;s law for multiphase fluid flow relates the velocities of the oil and water phases to the phase pressure gradients by the following relations:

Experiments have been carried out to study the effect of an applied stress on strain aging in steel. It was found that the stress-induced strain aging reaction proceeds rapidly in the temperature range of 0° to 60°C. The variation of stress-induced strain aging with plastic strain, aging time, and temperatures is reported. The activation energy for the stress-induced strain aging was found to be 10,000 cal per mol for the steel used in this investigation. VARIOUS observations1-5 have been made of the influence of an applied stress upon the yielding of iron and steel. However, there have been only cursory studies of the effect of an applied tensile stress upon strain aging in iron and steel1,2 The following represents the results of a preliminary study of strain aging as influenced by the application of an external tensile load during the aging process. For the most part, previous experimental work on strain aging can be classified into two parts. First, the experimental technique involved a direct determination of mechanical properties of a suitable specimen that has been plastically deformed to a constant strain and aged generally at a temperature of the order of 200°C, with the aging times varying from about 1/10 to 2 hr.6-8 The second classification of strain aging experiments involves an indirect determination of strain aging by means of physical property such as electrical resistivity or internal friction as a function of the aging time at a constant temperature and strain.9-12 The latter results have

A back- reflection precession-type X-yay camera for determining the crystallographic orientation of the crystallites of both phases in small areas of thick specimens of polyphase alloys is described ad the geometry, advantages, and limitations of the apparatus are discussed. Metallographic obseg-vations of interfacial angles (or habit planes or growth direction are made on the same specimen so that the crystallographic and metallographzc orientation data call be directly correlated. An example of the application of tile technique to a unidi-~~ectionally solidified CuA12-A1 eutectic specimen is presented. The interfacial planes ad growth directions of each phase were established, and the orientation relationship between the phases was observed and found to be approximately intermediate between two previously reported relationships. The crystallographic interfacial relationship between two solid phases is an important parameter in a variety of metallurgical phenomena because of the energy associated with the interface and because this energy is at least partly associated with the way in which the two space lattices are in contact along the interface. In order to describe the interfacial planes in the crystallites of both phases it is necessary to determine the crystallographic orientation of each phase in a specimen relative to each other, and to directly correlate these data with met-allographic measurements from which the interfacial planes can be determined on the same specimen. The back-reflection Laue technique is the easiest way to determine the orientation of thick single crystals or large grains and the method can be combined with metallographic techniques to provide the necessary data, provided the reflections from each phase can be distinguished from one another. However, if the crystallites are small or of varying orientation or if one or both phases has a unit cell with less than the maximum symmetry, many overlapping and complex Laue patterns are recorded simultaneously and it becomes impractical if not impossible to interpret the photographs. All of these complexities were present in a unidirectionally so- lidified A1-CuA12 eutectic alloy1 for which a crystallographic analysis was desired. Consequently the method described here was developed since no known X-ray or electron diffraction technique had all of the following attributes which were required. 1) Method should yield data from which the crys-tallographic orientation of every crystallite or diffracting unit in the irradiated area can be determined. 2) Method should be adaptable to the study of small areas. Depending upon the degree of preferred orientation in the specimens, it should be possible to obtain reliable data in a reasonable length of time on irradiated areas as small as 1.0 or even 0.1 mm in diam. 3) Method should permit direct correlation of crystallographic data with microscopic orientation data pertaining to crystallite axes, habit, morphology, and growth directions as determined by optical microscopy. 4) method should be such that selected areas of large specimens can be easily studied. Trepanning of a small specimen (such as an electron microscope specimen) from larger specimens was undesirable since it would greatly increase the problem of correlating the crystallographic and microscopic directional data. Requirements 3 and 4 dictated that an X-ray back-reflection pinhole technique should be used on large samples, such as metallographic specimens which had previously been examined and analyzed for their microscopic characteristics. Similarly, requirement 2 could be satisfied by choosing a collimator of appropriately small diameter. Exposure times would not be excessive provided the detector were close enough to the specimen. Because of space limitations film was chosen in preference to a Geiger counter. Requirement 1 was fulfilled by using monochromatic radiation and providing enough additional degrees of freedom in specimen rotation to compensate for Bragg law restrictions on diffracted beams. The Mather Mine property is composed of a 5.2 sq km (2 sq mile) area within the Cities of Ishpeming and Negaunee which are located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Production in this mine started in 1943; it ran continuously until its closing in 1979, having produced slightly over 55 million tons of iron ore. This mine was a joint venture between several steel companies and The Cleveland- Cliffs Iron Company (CCI), with CCI being the fee holder and operator. For the first 17 years of operation, the ore was shipped in its natural state directly from the mine to the steel mill. By 1960, iron ore pellets were on the market and they proved so superior to the natural soft Mather ore that the latter became difficult to sell except for the coarser portions. It was decided to develop a pelletizing process for the Mather ore, and this was accomplished by 1965 when the first Mather pellets were produced. From this date, all but the coarse fraction of the Mather ore was shipped as pellets. The geological setting is that of a large east-west trending synclinorium which plunges to the west. The lowest member of this trough-like structure is, for the most part, a quartzite-like graywacke, the upper 20 m of which grades into a softer, fine grained slate. Lying conformably on this graywacke footwall member is an iron- formation member which is over 1,300 m in thickness. This iron-formation is cow posed of thin alternate bands of iron oxides and chert and is intruded by a number of diorite sills - some up to 122 rn (400 ft) in thickness. The north limb of this synclinorium dips at approximately 45&apos; and bottoms out at about 1,000 m from surface in the central part of the mine. There are two sets of faults, many of which are intruded by diorite dikes, which trend east-west and southeast-northwest. Displacements are varied, reaching a maximum displacement of 243 m (800 ft). The ore is found lying directly on the slatey footwall and its position is largely controlled by the faults and dikes, with the bulk of the ore being on the upper side of these structures. The ore is composed of soft earthy hematite and martite with vertical thicknesses up to 122 m (400 ft) although the average thickness would be closer to 46 m (150 ft). The ore averaged 60% iron and 7% silica on a dried analysis. The Mather Mine is located on the north limb of the syncline and was worked from two shafts, the deepest of which. was 1,09 7 m. These two shafts are about 2 km apart and serviced a total of 8 working levels between them during the life of the mine. The level spacing was about 61 m (200 ft). The main haulageways were driven parallel to the ore/footwall contact in the hard cow petent graywacke wherever possible. On the lower levels, deeper into the footwall, naked development was common. This material graded into roof bolting ground towards the upper stratigraphic portion. As drifting progressed further into the upper stratigraphic portion of the footwall, progressively stronger steel sets had to be used. From the main haulageway, cross-cuts were turned into the orebody on 61 m (200 ft) centers and extended as far as needed to recover the ore available to that particular cross-cut. The main haulageways and cross-cuts were driven 3 m (10 ft) high, 3 m (10 ft) wide at the top and 4.6 m (15 ft) wide at the bottom. This configuration would accomodate a set composed of a 2.7 m (9 ft) cap on top of two 2.7 m (9 ft) legs angled out at 18&apos;. A sill plate was used under each leg to prevent its sinking into the ore below. The type of steel used was dependent on the expected weight to be experienced. Sets were placed on 1.63 m (5 ft 4 in.) centers; however, in extremely heavy areas, it was sometimes necessary to install sets on 0.8 m (2 ft 8 in.) centers. On the top two levels (5th and 6th), the ore was considerably hard-er and was mined by sub-level stoping and long hole drilling. Very light steel sets were used in the main haulageways and cross-cuts and timber was used in the production drifts. Some con- crete production drifts were installed on 6th level, but proved to be uneconomical. However, as mining reached greater depths, the ore became softer and more massive, reaching its maximum vertical heights on 11th and 12th levels. The American mining industry is vigorous today because it is young. At a time when the ore deposits of central Europe, for example, were being exploited actively, those of the United States were lying practically untouched. The founding fathers of our republic were not interested in mineral wealth because they were ignorant in such matters; their preoccupations were with defence against the Indians, the clearing of the forest, and the starting of agriculture in their new domains. They had no idea of establishing a mining industry. The Indians whom the American colonists dispossessed had no mines; they used only the metal that was to be found lying on the surface of the ground. Their arrows and spears were tipped with flint, which likewise called for little digging, if any. The native copper that glacial action had torn from the lodes of the Lake Superior region and had carried into the valleys of the Ohio and Mississippi was employed in the making of earrings, bracelets, knives, and scrapers. The same useful metal was found in many other places, in Virginia and Carolina, in Vermont and New Jersey, for example, but the Indians did not know how to melt it, much less how to smelt the ore, therefore they shaped it into tools and implements by hammering. Fortunately for them the hammering of the metal caused it to harden and therefore to become serviceable for implemental use. During the past 4 or 5 years, much has been added to the detailed geologic knowledge of the Mesabi Range. This has not been in the direction of discovery of any new fundamental facts, but of detailed study, subdivision and correlation of different parts of the whole formation and of individual orebodies. Prior to this time, mining engineers in the district were so engaged with the commercial interests of exploring and developing orebodies that close geologic study and subdivision were done in a few instances only. The demand for refinement of work in .this direction has led &apos;the engineers of the Oliver Iron Mining Co. to do extensive structural subdivision and correlation in all exploration work during the past 4 years. Such work has become a commercial necessity rather than a scientific refinement, and at the present time is being extended to all parts of the Range. In the summer of 1914, the author of this paper wrote a series of articles on the orebodies and special features of the Mesabi Rangc, which was published in the Engineering and Mining Journal, issues of July 17 to Aug. 7,1915. Since that time studies of subdivision of the iron-formation have been extended considerably. The principal feature of this paper is the presentation of the subdivisions of the iron-formation. To this is added a discussion of the relations of the orebodies to the gentle folding and fracturing of the formation, and special features of the Range. The outline will be as follows : I. Many attempts have been made to write a formula by which to calculate the strength of steel from its chemical composition, but most of these endeavors have failed because there were too many disturbing conditions. It is idle to collect from the pages of trade-papers, books, or the proceedings of scientific societies, a multitude of observations. The combination of such results will simply show that steel of the same composition will vary in tensile strength through wide limits—a fact that has been known for generations. That cold-working, overheating, and many another form of heat-treatment alter fundamentally the strength of steel, is ancient history, although it is only recently that the microscope has pointed out the road to an explanation of the phenomena. It mag be urged that the microscopic structure must betaken into consideration in any formula giving the ultimate strength, but from the standpoint of the present investigation this is unnecessary. We are trying to determine primarily, not what changes in ultimate strength may be made by variations in the condition of carbon, but what effect is produced by changes in the amount of carbon, when its condition remains constant. For such an inquiry, in order that the condition of the carbon should remain as nearly uniform as possible, it is essential that all testrpieces be made under the same conditions; and it is believed that the tests described in this paper satisfy that requirement. The object of the present paper is to suggest injecting into the hearths of iron blast furnaces, whose temperature has become unduly lowered, some form of fuel whose calorific intensity, under the peculiar conditions existing there, is considerably higher than than of liquid petroleum, the rose of this substance for melting out chills having grievonsly disappointed the high hopes which were at first entertained of it. A chill being a fall of the temperature below that needed for the complete liquefaction of the slag, which requires, according to Plattner, about 1800&apos; C., one would suppose that the chief thing to be accomplished in curing it would be to raise the temperature in the crucible of the furnace. The most obvious ways of doing this seem to be to raise the temperature of the blast, and to increase the amount of fuel in the crucible itself. Simply increasing the rate at which the blast enters the furnace, if carried beyond a certain point, should lower the temperature in the crucible. The existence of a chill shows that the fuel is arriving too slowly at the tuyeres. If air be introduced so rapidly as to he in excess of that required for the combustion of the fuel, all that excess will simply lower the temperature around the tuyeres, carrying the region of intense heat upwards, and weakening its intensity by increasing its size. Up to a certain point, increasing the rate of introducing the blast will increase practically pari passu the rate at which the fuel reaches the tuyeres. But when mechanical obstructions, which so often accompany chills, retard the descent of the fuel, there must be a point beyond which this does not hold good, and beyond which farther

DESIRABLE as it is to summarize what has been set forth in preceding chapters, the task can only be approached with great hesitation. What follows represents the personal views of the author at the moment of writing, reserving the privilege to change them on more mature reflection or in the light of further evidence. With that reservation they may be stated somewhat as follows. Education for the mineral industries falls into two categories; general education and technical vocational, using the word vocational not in its usual sense but to signify preparation for specific activities, in which sense a law school is a vocational school. Even at the beginning, as indicated in the first chapter, mineral industry education was partly general and, partly technical and that relationship still persists, because technical education requires a firm basis of general education. Our general American system is to provide free public&apos; general education through the twelfth grade, or completion of high-school work, though there are already many technical vocational high schools, and even in a community where nearly all the young people are preparing for entrance to college there will be some who wish to qualify for employment at the end of the high-school course, or even on completing junior high. Our educational system, therefore, has not only to provide education for those who intend to proceed beyond the twelfth grade but also for those who, for a variety of reasons, may wish or be forced to cease full-time education at any level between the first and twelfth grades. This study has been chiefly concerned with the problem of what kind and how much technical education to provide for those who have completed the twelfth grade and who wish to make their living in the mineral industries. RAPIDLY rising world demand for mineral pro- ducts has accelerated depletion of the more readily accessible ores, particularly those of premium grade. Operations must proceed at a faster rate to deeper horizons, where there are problems of ground control that restrict economic recovery of the mineral and introduce new hazards to mine personnel. For some of the new Canadian mining fields severe problems of ground stress are still in the future, but much of Canada&apos;s mineral output comes from well established mines that have reached considerable depths. It must also be anticipated that the depletion of premium grade ores will eventually necessitate mining low grade material at competitive cost, and unsolved problems of ground control can materially increase costs. Studies of ground stress phenomena in underground workings are therefore considered a present-day necessity, especially since these investigations must be a long-term effort owing to the highly complex nature of the problem and the difficulty of making full-scale observations.
