These notes should be considered as a further discussion of Mr. S. W. Miller's paper on "Some Structures in Steel Fusion Welds."l In that paper and the resulting discussion, several conflicting opinions were expressed as to the identity of the needles or small crystals present in oxyacetylene and electric welds. An interesting specimen of an electric weld examined by the writer seems to afford new evidence regarding the needles, that may be worth presenting at this time. The specimen consisted of a piece of 3/8-in. (9.5-mm.) steel plate, about 21/4 by 13/4 in. (5.7 by 4.5 cm.) in size, on which some iron had been deposited by arc-welding to a depth of about 3/16 in. (4.7 mm.). The weld appeared to be a very good one, with no noticeable break or boundary between the plate and the deposited iron. Sections for microscopic examination were cut in three planes at right angles to each other through the deposited metal, two of these sections also extended through the steel base. After polishing in the usual way, the microscope showed that the deposited metal was full of very small, round, gray, oxide spots, while the steel plate contained quite a number of alumina inclusions and a little slag. The sections were etched with nitric acid in ordinary alcohol, and structures similar to those described by Mr. Miller were then displayed. Fig. 1 shows the typical appearance of the deposited metal, which was quite uniform in all three of the planes examined. The round dark-gray spots are oxides, and the pale angular crystals are evidently what Mr. Miller called cem-entite and Mr. Jeffries martensite, while Mr. Ruder and Professor Boyls-ton think that they might be nitride. The boundary between this structure and the steel base was sharply defined under the microscope. Fig. 2 shows the structure of the plate just under the weld; this is almost martensitic and resembles a coarse-grained casting. This coarse cast structure soon became finer as the distance from the weld increased, finally becoming very fine, with numerous small particles of sorbite. The response of beryl to sulfonate flotation was examined. The dependence of flotation recovery on sulfonate concentration, pH, and the absence or presence of various ions is also demonstrated. The response of quartz and feldspar to sulfonate flotation at various values of pH is given to. show the conditions necessary for selective separation. Finally, beryl was successfully concentrated from a natural ore using a technique devised from experimental observations on systems of pure minerals. With the possible exception of quartz, the flotation characteristics of silicate minerals are rather poorly understood. This is due in part to the com- plexity of the mineral systems themselves and in part to an insufficient amount of flotation data. The complexity of the systems arises from the wide range of chemical composition that the silicate minerals can assume. This is reflected in the variability of such physical properties as hardness and cleavage. Although the chemical composition of silicate minerals can vary considerably, a general grouping can be accomplished conveniently on the basis of the assemblage of SiO4 tetrahedra in all the silicates. That is, it has been shown that six basic groups can be obtained, depending on the arrangement of oxygen sharing between adjacent silicon atoms (or substituted aluminum). When all four oxygen atoms are shared, a framework structure such as quartz or feldspar is obtained. When three oxygens are shared, infinite sheets are obtained as in the micas and clays. The lead district of Southeast Missouri covers an area of over 3000 square miles, including Maries County on the west, Jefferson on the east, Franklin on the north, and part of Madison on the south, or parts of ten counties. A general section of the rocks of the southeast part of this region would be about as follows, numbering from the top: 1. Sandstone (the second of Missouri geologists),.... 20 feet. 2. Granite, The thickness is approximate, for it is not possible to obtain the correct thickness of the various beds. No. 1 may be seen as detached outliers or loose masses of a hard sandstone or quartzite, and is found on the hilltops in the southern part of Madison County, in like topographical position in Reynolds County and the western part of Washington County. No. 2 consists of alternations of chert, clay, and quartzite. It is the formation which contains most of the limonite deposits of Central and Southern Missouri. In Reynolds County shafts have penetrated it 75 feet. Outcrops there and in Madison would indicate it to be at least 125 feet thick. Fossils obtained in various places prove it clearly to be of the age of the calciferous saudrock of the New York system, and Nos. 1 and 2 may also be referred to the age of the second sandstone of Missouri. No. 3 consists chiefly of thick beds of ash, drab and flesh-colored magnesian limestone, both coarse and fine-grained. These beds, where they occur, in Washington, Jefferson, and the southern part of Madison Counties, contain a good deal of quartz in drusy cavities. In Washington County the limestones are beautifully ramified by a system of connected drusy cavities generally lined with minute quartz crystals arranged in botryoidal and mammillary forms, and called " mineral blossom " by the miners. This is the lead-bearing rock of Washington County, but in the southern part of Madison it does not appear to be galeniferous. It is also undoubtedly the equivalent of

Performance of a high-pressure, vaporizing gas-drive project in a volatile oil reservoir is discussed. The project has been in operation for over 8 years. Present recovery from the over-all displaced portion of the reservoir is 40 percent, and an ultimate recovery of 60 percent is indicated. Calculations reflect an over-all displacement volume of 50 percent for the entire reservoir; therefore, ultimate oil recovery will be 30 percent of the entire reservoir oil originally in place. Laboratory vaporization tests conducted prior to project initiation also are presented and discussed, along with an analytical method of determining stock-tank oil production and gar injection requirements related to over-all volumetric displacement efficiency from these data. Introduction The Shoats Creek field is located in Beauregard Parish, La., in the extreme western part of the state (Fig. 1). Discovered in 1956, the field is productive in three Cockfield sand zones, ranging in depth from 8,000 to 9.000 ft. The upper two zones, 1st and 2nd Cockfield, are condensate-bearing gas reservoirs. The lowest zone, the 5th Cockfield, is a volatile-oil reservoir. Laboratory work conducted on crude oil from the 5th Cockfield zone shortly after field discovery demonstrated that, when contacted with dry gas, signidcant volumes of the oil could be vaporized at reservoir temperature and at an appropriately high reservoir pressure. Further study led to the conclusion that early initiation of a crude vaporization project in the 5th Cockfield zone would be superior economically to other methods of reservoir depletion. Consequently, the zone was unitized and gas injection operations started late in 1958. This paper discusses laboratory work performed in conjunction with the project, and project performance to the present. History of Development The 5th Cockfield zone in Shoats Creek is composed of a thin, very shaly, low-permeability sandstone. Oil accumulation is controlled by a structural trap bounded by faults along the north and west and by a water contact on the southern boundary (Fig. 2). The zone covers a productive area of 1,550 acres at an average depth of 9,000 ft. The net sand section is thin, having a maximum thickness of 10 ft and an average thickness of 5.5 ft (Fig. 3). Average reservoir rock properties, as determined from core analysis are presented in Table 1. Shaliness of the zone is illustrated by the typical electric log of the 5th Cockfield section in Fig. 4. Because of the thinness and poor quality of the sand, the 5th Cockfield was developed on a wide spacing. Eleven completions were made in the zone between 1956 and 1961 for an average density of 140 productive acres per completion, with the majority of wells being dually completed in the 2nd and 5th Cockfield. Average initial potential for producers in the 5th Cockfield was 130 BOPD. Oil from the 5th Cockfield has a stock-tank gravity of 50.5" API; with a bubble-point pressure of 3,515 psia, the oil was highly undersaturated at the original reservoir pressure of 4,675 psia. Pertinent properties of the oil as determined in the laboratory are presented in Table 2. Because of the volatile nature of the crude, laboratory studies of its susceptibility to vaporization, as well as a vapor-liquid phase study, were conducted in addition to a standard PVT analysis. Deformation and recrystallization textures of the a solid solutions of Cu-P, Cu-As, and Cu-Sb alloys are examined as a function of composition. It is found that the deformation texture of copper is unckanged up to a composition of 0.43, 0.41, and 0.24 at. pct of phosphorus, arsenic, and antimony, respectzvely, and then the transition to the 70 : 30 brass type of deformation texture proceeds linearly as the logarithm of the solute content. Recrystallization textures consist of strong, new components that do not all bear the usual<111> rotational relation to the deformation components. The dependence of the deformation texture transitions and the recrystallization orientations upon composition and solute-element type is discussed. A systematic evolution of individual recrystallization components in the annealing texture of copper was portrayed as a function of germanium or tin content in a previous study.&apos; Similar patterns of tex-tural change have been observed with copper-zinc alloys,2 and in less detailed studies of other systems.3,4 In fact, most of the literature dealing with preferred orientations in copper alloys indicates that the influence of solute elements upon textures in copper is of one general type. As the alloy content of copper is increased, the deformation texture changes from the copper type to the 70:30 brass type, and the annealing texture undergoes a comparable change from the (001) [ loo] orientation of unalloyed copper to the {113} <211> type of 70:30 brass, with the notable exception of copper alloyed with Periodic Subgroup V-B elements.4-8 In almost every case it is possible to describe the reorientations after annealing as 30 to 40 deg rotations about <1ll> poles of the deformation components. Since there is apparently not much difference in the final textures of the copper binary systems already investigated, only a limited variety of preferred orientations has served as the basis for current theories of the origin of annealing textures. In order to test the validity of the proposed theories, and the possibility that the <111> rotations are not unique, it would be most desirable to study the reorientation relationships of additional, and heretofore unanalyzed, recrystallization components if such components exist. Examination of the literature reveals a good deal of uncertainty concerning preferred orientations in copper alloyed with elements in Subgroup V-B of the Periodic Table. Phosphorus is known to inhibit the cube texture in copper when present in amounts as low as 0.01 wt pct,8 but the recrystallized matrix that occurs instead of the cube orientation was reported as either random or weakly textured, with orientations not observed in Cu-Zn, Cu-Ge, or Cu-Sn alloys.4-9 A Cu-0.75 at. pct As alloy apparently contained, along with the (001)[100] and (113) <211> type of recrystallization components, {110} <112> and (110) <001> components, whereas an almost random distribution of orientations was found in alloys of higher arsenic content.4 A {110} <001> component also appeared in rolledand annealed Cu-Sb alloys, but otherwise the recrystallization textures of Cu-Sb alloys seem to con-

The microstructure of TD-Ni has been examined by transmission electron microscopy in the extruded, annealed. and deformed states. The tensile properties hove been correlated with the observed microstructures and the results ore com-pared with those obtained from pure nickel. The important conclusions are that the thorin particles in TD-Ni act as strong burriers to dislocntion motion during both deformation (slip) and annealing (climb). During deformation. the dislocations tangle around the particles and a cell structure is devleloped after 10 pct or more strain. The cell size appears to be determined by the spacing of the largest particles and is about five times smaller than that in pure nickel for the same strain. The higher work-hardening rate in TD-Ni compared to nickel is probably due to the more rapid rate of dislocation multiplication in the alloy as a result of dislocation-particle interactions. The Th0,particles inhibit recrystallization and twin growh so that some strengthening may arise from the high density of small annealing twins. THE strengthening of materials due to the presence of a dispersed second phase has been the subject of considerable experimental and theoretical investigation in recent years. One of the newest dispersion-strengthened alloys to be developed is TD-Ni,1 a system of approximately 2 vol pct thoria (ThO2) dispersed in a matrix of commercially pure nickel. This material is fabricated by powder-metallurgical techniques and offers high-temperature stability and useful mechanical properties virtually to the melting point of the base metal. While the mechanical properties of this system have been investigated,2,3 there have been no reports in the literature concerning the microstruc-ture of TD-Ni and its correlation to mechanical properties. This paper describes a transmission electron microscopy investigation of the micro-structure of TD-Ni together with its mechanical properties. The results are compared with the structure and properties of pure nickel.

The immense commercial value of the Gayley dry-blast process has been established beyond controversy. The testimony of practical blast-furnace managers, on both sides of the Atlantic, agrees that it reduces the cost of pig-iron about $1 per ton; but from the same testimony it appears that this direct economy does not by any means cover its commercial advantages—in fact, that under conditions frequently encountered in practice, it presents other benefits of even greater immediate financial importance. To this point I shall recur in a later part of the present paper. The history of the reception given to this invention, especially on the other side of the Atlantic, has repeated an experience familiar to American engineers. First, the reports of our practice were rejected as theoretically impossible, according to generally accepted notions and formulas; then the figures were reluctantly accepted; and finally the attempt has been made to explain how they could have been obtained. As to the Gayley dry blast, me Americans have been for several years in the last stage of the discussion, and the rest of the professional world is rapidly coming to it. Meanwhile, the remark has been repeatedly made that, whatever Mr. Gayley&apos;s process may turn out to be worth, it was not an invention on his part, but simply the energetic and persevering execution of a procedure already proposed by others. This question I wish to discuss first in the present paper. I. What Did Mr. Gayley Invent? Realizing that this is not the place for detailed argument on an issue of patent law, I shall not undertake to quote and criticise the publications prior to Mr. Gayley&apos;a first patents. CANADIAN gold production is forging ahead annually and the prospects are that it will continue to do so for many years. Table 1 shows recent annual increases. Production for 1933 will probably reach $70,000,000, and further increases are likely in 1934 and 1935. (Data for November and December, 1932, are estimated throughout this article.) The depression sent many prospectors to the woods so during the last two years many new gold areas have been discovered and are attracting real capital for exploration and development. Several mills came into production in 1932 and mills now under construction will start production in 1933. The offices of mining lawyers are busy. Capital for this new work is obtained from well financed mining companies, syndicates, and individuals who were fortunate enough to invest in the dividend-paying gold mines of the north country in the early days. Prospectors and capital are cooperating. An interest is always retained by the prospector or vender and usually a small amount of real money is given the prospector.

(communication to the Secretary*): The recent papers in the Transactions by Vogt,&apos; Lindgren2 and Weed: on ore-deposits that have formed as a direct result of igneous intrusions, show that deposits of this class are widely distributed over the world, and are occasionally of commercial value. This is especially true if we consider under this head all deposits in the zone of contactrnletamorphism, the origin of which may be ascribed to the gases and vapors generated by the heat of the intrusive rock. Mr. Smith&apos;s description of the Chillagoe garnet-formations containing copper, leads one to regard these depoaits as of contactrmetamorphic origin, although he gives certain reaeons for supposing them to be of igneous origin.

Production of oil in Indiana during 1944 is estimated at approximately 4,950,000 bbl., a decline of 6 per cent from the preceding year. Shortage of labor and material, together with governmental regulations resulting from the war, largely account for the drop in output and limited new developments. Three new pools were discovered in the state during 1944. Two of these, New Harmony, South, and Hovey, West, are in Posey County. Six wells in the New Harmony, South, field produced 66,422 bbl. of oil last year. A third field, Cato, in Pike County, did not market the oil from its discovery well during 1944. Several wells discovered oil in the Henderson field of Jay County along the Ohio state line. An important south extension of the St. Thomas field in Knox County was discovered during the year. Active drilling took place in the Inman, East, and Upton fields, Posey County, both discovered in 1943. Twenty-two wells in Inman, East, produced 151,1gr bbl. in 1944 and 12 in Upton produced 107,052 bbl. Owensville, and especially Owensville, North, in Gibson County, made large gains in production as a result of active drilling. The Dodds Bridge field in Sullivan County continued good production from deep sands reached in 1942. The Griffin continued to be the largest producer among the oil pools of Indiana, accounting for 2,004,180 bbl., over 40 per cent of the state&apos;s output. The next largest producing fields are Mt. Vernon and New Harmony, both in Posey County. The largest gas well brought in during 1944 was in the Rockport field, Spencer County, and had an initial output of 2,680,000 cu. ft. per day. The most productive gas fields in Indiana are Rockport, Spencer County, Greensburg, Decatur County, and Unionville, Monroe County. Total production in the state is . hard to estimate, as considerable gas is consumcd in farm homes and for other local uses, and never is reported, but was near 1500 million cubic feet. Some oil from the Trenton field is also used locally and is unreported from pipe-line runs. A total of 606,145 ft. of new hole was drilled in Indiana in 1944. Most of the completions were in Posey and Gibson counties, although wells were drilled in 36 different counties. During the year 331 wells were completed. Of these, 145 found oil in commercial quantities and 28 were gas wells. The initial production of the 145 oil wells was 11,908 bbl. per day. Settled production would be less, of course. The largest wells reported during the year were two on the J. W. Mann farm, in the Mt. Vernon field, with a flush flow of 500 to 800 bbl. each.. Six pools, all small "one well" affairs, were abandoned in 1944; i.e., Fleenor and Patoka in Gibson County, Grafton and Rapture in Posey County, Vaughn in Vandei-bwgh County and Millersburgh, Warrick County.

The desirability of employing the centigrade scale for the measurement of temperatures is becoming more and more recognized in this country, particularly in view of the fact that this scale is used almost exclusively in technical papers and publications—exclusively in those published in French or German. There are, however, a large number of factories and laboratories which still employ the Fahrenheit scale. It therefore frequently becomes necessary to convert one into the other and the accompanying chart (Fig. I) has been found very convenient for this purpose. The Gooseberry Mine is located 38 krn (24 miles) by road east of Reno, 13 km (8 miles) south of Interstate 80. The mine was originally discovered in 1906 and remained in the control of the Martin family of Fresno, who worked the-property with Mexican ranch hands for 68 years. Westcoast took over the property in 1976 from Apco Oil Corporation. During the time the Martins operated the mine, a 305 m (1,000 ft) inclined shaft was sunk with drifts developed on eight levels exceeding a total of 3,000 m (9,000 ft) in length. It is interesting to note that for over one -half century all development ore was stockpiled. West- coast, the United States mining subsidiary of Home Oil Company Ltd., Calgary, Alberta, completed sinking another vertical shaft to the 396 m (1,300 ft) level. Development work between 122 m and 305 m (400 ft and 1,000 ft) levels has proved the existence of a fine ore body over 300 m (1,000 ft) long. The silver-gold ore grade is fairly consistent in the vertical section, but copper, lead and zinc may show slight increases with depth. Average width of the ore bearing portion of the vein is 2.5 m (8.3 ft). Stoping is by cut-and-fill method. Average silver values within the ore zone have increased from the 152 m (500 ft) level to the 305 m (1,000 ft) level, although the gold values do show some decrease. It is not possible for the geological staff to predict the depth of the ore. However, several years of ore reserves have been proved in the existing mining areas. Important ore minerals are argentite, native gold, and electrum. Trace amounts of galena, chalcopyrite, and sphalerite are associated with the precious metal mineralization. The vein is mainly composed of calcite and quartz. Mine-run underground ore is dumped from the hoisting skip into a coarse ore bin followed by a jaw crusher, an impact crusher, and a 600 mt (650 st) fine ore bin. The mill has a capacity of 317 mt per day (350 st per day). Two-stage grinding is done by a rod mill followed by cyclones with the underflow sent to a ball mill in closed circuit with the cyclones. Cyclone overflow after conditioning receives a primary float in four 1.7 cu m (30 cu ft) cells and a second stage of conditioning ahead of 24 0.8 cu m (30 cu ft) secondary flotation cells. No cleaning stages are used. Flotation tailings are cycloned for a sand-slime separation with the sands used as underground stope fill and the slime portion to tailing dam storage.

IT is characteristic of most scientific investigators that they are not satisfied with the discovery of new facts, no matter how curious or unexpected, but that along with the factual discovery there is a constant effort to understand It appears that. one&apos;s interest in, and satisfaction with, the discovery of an array of news experimental facts is enormously increased if one has at the same time a theory or hypothesis guiding one&apos;s expectation of what sort of new experimental discovery may lie around the corner Conversely, as a theoretical physicist one&apos;s satisfaction with his theory is greatly enhanced if along with the development of the theory can go the discovery of new experimental facts, confirming or perhaps modifying the theory as it grows Of course, there have been long and stretches in the history of physics in which new data of unquestioned ultimate importance ham e piled up, without much inspiration or illumination in the way of understanding For 50 years spectroscopy had such an and history, but how irksome this was felt to be is plainly shown by the almost audible relief that greeted the first success by Bohr in injecting understanding into the situation, and by the fresh rush of experimenters into this field when the prospect of understanding had once been offered The investigations in the field of high pressure, which have occupied me for a long time,1 until the last few years have been in very much the Same sort of situation as spectroscopy before the advent of Bohr A great many kids, of data were collected for a great many solid and liquid substances, and there could be no question of the importance of these data, because the uniform change of dimensions produced by hydrostatic pressure is perhaps the simplest conceivable type of alteration to which a body can be subjected But except for a few isolated flashes, there was no theoretical illumination, so that it had to be to a large extent the enthusiasm of the collector that kept me going However, within the last few years the wave-mechanics theory of solids has progressed so rapidly that

Uranium, discovered in 1949 at Rum Jungle, 40 miles south of Darwin, N. T., was mined and processed to U3O8 from 1954 to 1963 by the Territory Enterprises Pty. Ltd. TEP is a Government company managed by Conzinc RioTinto of Australia Ltd. During this period, the uranium oxide was sold under contract to the Combined Development Agency, a joint Anglo-American uranium procurement agency. When the contract terminated in 1963, more than 31/4 million pounds of uranium oxide had been delivered which had been mined from three open pits. Copper ores, found with the uranium, necessitated the addition of a copper circuit to the concentrator. Copper concentrates containing 12,981 pounds of copper were also produced. Rum Jungle was the largest single industrial enterprise in the Northern Territories and, as such, was an important economic and social factor in this sparsely settled tropical region. To stretch out the life of this enterprise for the above reasons, and with the added possibility that the uranium market might improve, the Commonwealth mined out and stockpiled 650,000 tons of ore containing 9.6 lb of U,O, per ton, which is sufficient to sustain the treatment plant at 200 tpd until about 1971. In the plant, uranium is recovered from solution by solvent ex- traction. Current output is being stockpiled pending suitable market conditions.

TWO American students entered the Ecole des Mines in 1856, Joseph Lesley of Philadelphia and Thomas Egleston of New York. Lesley remained there only one year, but Egleston completed the whole &apos;curriculum and received, in 1860, the certificate given to foreign students .in lieu of the official appointment and degree. awarded French students. Returning home he received, in 1861, an appointment by Secretary Henry of the Smithsonian Institution to sort, label, and arrange the collections of mineralogical and geological specimens which had been brought to Washington by the various government exploring expeditions in the West. Thomas Egleston, born in New York City on Dec. 9, 1832, was the son of Thomas Jefferson Egleston, who came to New York from Massachusetts some time before 1829. The first American ancestor of the family had settled near Dorchester. in 1630. T. J. Egleston and Joseph Battell established an iron-merchandizing business* at 166 South St., New, York, which prospered exceedingly; so much so that when Thomas J. Egleston died, July 12, 1861, his estate had a book value of over $500,000. Since an older brother was expected eventually to take over this business, Thomas, who had a liking for science, went to Yale,, where he completed the regular four-year course in 1854, and then remained another year for advanced work in chemistry under Silliman. I One biographer says he went to Europe, . early in 1-856, on account of his health. It was the custom at that time for wealthy young men to make a tour of Europe after completing their academic education. Whatever the precise reason, he began scientific work at the Jardin des Plantes in Paris but soon trans* It still operating as Egleston Bros. Although Greater New York does not bear any resemblance to a great mining district, the mining operations that are being conducted in and about the city are both extensive and interesting in character. With regard to the extent, it may be mentioned that, at present, there is more dynamite used in New York than in any mining district in the United States; that there are under construction about 38 miles of tunnel, and that 66 miles more are projected, most of which must be constructed .in the near future; that since 1903 at least 2,000,000 tons of earth has been removed in underground work, in addition to about 3,500,000 tons that has been removed in open-cut in connection with tunnel-work, and many times this quantity that has been removed in excavating foundations for buildings not connected with tunnel-work; and that there are to-day probably more than 5,000 men engaged in mining-work in and about New lrork City. These undertakings include almost every operation connected with underground work, from exploration by means of trench and boring, to the sinking of large shafts and the driving of large tunnels through every kind of ground from hard rock to soft, semi-fluid silt and quicksand. It is proposed in this paper to give a general description of some of the methods and appliances used in the opening-up of a " mine " in a large city, and a brief description of some of the &&apos;mines" now being developed in New York, connecting as far as possible the methods described with the particular work for which they were designed, in order to give a general idea of the

IN 1934, when Gregg and Daniloffl wrote their excellent monograph on the alloys of iron and copper, the most recent literature on the constitution of the alloys indicated a narrow single-liquid area for 20" above the liquidus with a closed liquid mis-cibility gap above this. Since that time, however, a number of investigators have confirmed the much earlier studies of Mushet2 and Stead3 who, among others in the nineteenth century, had described the true state of affairs. Liquid copper and iron are completely miscible in the absence of carbon, but small amounts of carbon cause liquid segregation. In 1934, one of the writers&apos; mentioned evidence for the absence of liquid separation in carbon-free alloys at temperatures up to 1700°C. Two years later, Mad-docks and Claussen5 unequivocally established the absence of liquid segregation and published a revised diagram, reproduced in fig. 1. They also studied the limits of the two-liquid area in ternary alloys of iron, copper, and carbon as a function of carbon and iron content. In the same year Simpson and Bannister" and Schumacher and Souden7 described in some detail the properties of alloys containing 50 to 75 pct Cu. More recently Hodges et al.16 have developed the copper-rich alloys for use as high-strength conductors. In 1937, Iwase, Okamoto, and Ameniya8 published data on the miscibility gap in ternary alloys of iron, copper, and carbon that supported the conclusions of Maddocks and Claussen, and definitely located the two-liquid area at temperatures of 1450" and 1540°C. They also reported that additions of 1 pct Al, Ni, Pb, Sn, or Zn caused no segregation in 50 pct Cu alloys at 1540°C. The use of copper in amounts approximating 1 pct has found industrial employment to an increasing degree in both wrought and cast steels, for such steels are capable of being precipitation-hardened following normalizing, and have high yield strengths. This is summarized by Gregg and Daniloff,1 Sallitt,9 and Lorig and Adams,10 while Alexander" gives additional information on the heat treatment of copper-steel castings. Lippert12 has described Digby&apos;s two-phase steels containing copper and chromium. The work described in the present paper was done in the years 1932 to 1934, at which time much of the information was new. The excellent work subsequently done in other laboratories but more promptly published makes the present paper in part only a confirmation of what is now well known.
