A few years ago, the writer encountered a problem that, at first, seemed to be due to peculiar conditions affecting grain growth. Large cups made from heavy metal failed in the first drawing operation in the process of making seamless tubes. The metal, as cast, appeared to be sound and strong; it rolled successfully and withstood the first cupping operation, but on the first draw it failed, with a crystalline fracture. The failure appeared in the slightly worked part of the bottom of the cup, and microscopic examination revealed exceptionally large grains. Knowing the general conditions governing recrystallization of brass, which were later published by Mathewson and Phillipsll an investigation was outlined with the idea of including various conditions under which new grains might form, and which would include the effect that a previous anneal might have upon the anneal following. These conditions were produced by annealing specimens of brass at five different temperatures, indenting them with a 10-mm. ball under four different pressures, and then reannealing at each of the five temperatures five specimens each of which had been annealed at one of the five temperatures. Preparation of Specimens The material used was cartridge brass 0.400 in. thick, having the following composition: Copper 66.60 per. cent., zinc 33.35 per cent., lead 0.02 per cent., iron 0.03 per cent. This was rolled with 35 per cent. reduction after a 700" C. anneal. Fig. 1 shows the structure of this original bar on which all subsequent anneals were made. Pieces 1 in. (2.5 cm.) wide and 3 in. long were prepared and annealed for 1/2 hr. at 450°, 550°, 650°, '750°, and 850" C. Each of these pieces are indented under the Brinell test with a 10-mm. ball at 500, 1000, 2000, and 3000 kg. pressure. Then, sets of five pieces from each of the original anneals were reannealed at 450°, 550°, 650°, 750°, and 850" C.

The appraisal of an oil lease may often be mad,? through production decline analysis, which requires description of the functional relationship between the oil production rate and either cumulative production or time. Heretofore, attempts to define the function appropriate to a given set of production data have depended to some extent on subjective procedures. The purpose here is to introduce an objective solution, obtained by combining the principle of least squares with the theory of equations. MATHEMATICAL ANALYSIS The fundamental differential equation appropriate to a general class of decline curves may be written. Solution of Eq. 1 for general boundary conditions may be written in terms of either the cumulative oil production or time: These equations constitute the mathematical expression of the so-called hyperbolic decline. Their complete description for a given set of production data requires the numerical evaluation of the three parameters1.', n, D, and (go),. For the special case of n = 0, Eq. 2 becomes q. = (q.), - DiN with the corresponding expression in terms of time being q. = (qa),e...........(5) Similarly, for the special case of n = 1, Eq. 3 becomes with the corresponding expression in terms of cumula- tive oil production being q. = (q.),e " '.......(7) Eqs. 4 and 5 constitute the mathematical description of the so-called exponential decline; Eqs. 6 and 7 are the mathematical description of the harmonic decline.',' Returning to the hyperbolic expressions, Eqs. 2 and 3 may also be written, q: = sNp + b........ Note that both Eqs. 8 and 9 are linear in either time or cumulative production with respect to an exponential function of the production rate. In other words, a straight line relationship results for both variables when associated with the appropriate power of q,. This fact is of prime importance in the application of statistical analysis. . STATISTICAL ANALYSIS For a given oil lease, the time, production rate and cumulative production are recorded records. To establish predictive formulas from Eqs. 2 and 3, it remains to determine numerical values for the three parameters [n, D, and (q,) .] through an investigation of the past history. Upon interpreting a, s and b as parameters, Eq. 8 may be expressed for every time interval of interest, i, over the past history as follows. (q,): = s(Np), + b........(10) In general, Eq. 10 will not be satisfied exactly, because of the assumptions in the expression of Eq. 1, and the errors and anomalies universally associated with production data. This paper was prepared upon request as a contribution to a symposium covering the manufacture, properties, and uses of the important non-ferraus metals. In approaching a subject as broad as this, there is a natural desire to build up a comprehensive and finished production which shall constitute a dependable source of information on all questions properly belonging to this branch of metal technology. There are, however, a number of circumstances, apart from the mere routine of labor and thought involved, which operate rather effectively against the possibility of completing such .an ambitious program at the present time. First of all, as far as any public record of results is concerned, the commercial rolling, drawing, and forming of zinc with relation to changes of structure and properties—and this we consider to constitute the clement~ of metal technology—might as well be an unpractised art. We have never seen a published photomicrograph showing the structural characteristics of either hard or soft sheet or strip, although the structure of castings has been frequently described, and other coarse-grained structures resulting from hard-hammering and annealing have been reproduced. Thus, an author in this field must proceed to his task without much assistance from the literature, and the outcome can represent only a personal estimate of principles, facts, or findings, and not a summary or survey of progress in the entire field as determined by varied experience, practice, and settled opinion.

Referring to the article by R. J. Charles and P. L. de Bruyn, let us assume that W = weight of glass bar; P = weight of hammer; e = total deformation; K = unit of deformation; K = potential stress energy; E = modulus of elasticity; L = length of the bar; 7 = coefficient of inertia; h = height, ft; V = velocity, fps; and a = cross section area. The portion of kinetic energy which is effective in producing stress energy in a fixed bar struck horizontally is given by the formula" 1 + 1/3 W/P K =1+1/3w/p/(1+1/2w/p)2 P.V2/2g = Ph where 1 + 1/3 W/P ? (1 + 3W/P/(1=1/2w/p)2 [8] Putting e e = W/P =------------ From the above equation it can be seen that the maximum transfer of kinetic energy to stress energy is when e = 0 or W/P = 0 which indicates that the weight of the hammer must be very large as compared with the weight of the impacted rod. Eq. 8 diametrically opposes the conclusions reached by the authors of this article. In fact, if their suggestions were followed to the extreme when e = co when P = 0, there would be no transfer of kinetic energy to stress energy at all, as 7, becomes zero. Eq. 8 presumes that the velocity with which the stress is propagated through the bar is infinite, whereas the authors claim that the compression waves reflected are reaching the struck end of the bar prior to the complete transfer of the kinetic energy to cause such modification of the conditions there as to make them reach the reverse conclusions demonstrated by the above formula. That such interference exists is unquestionably demonstrated by the authors and others. However, if my observations are correct, such interference for this specific experiment and also for practical comminu- tion is insignificant, and the conclusions of the authors are in error and must be reversed to comply with Eq. 8. Eq. 5, w. = AE 2/2, given by the authors on page 51, is derived from the following equation (Eq. 9): K = 1/2Pe, where P = Sa, S = ?E, e = EL, and L = 1. The above formula, Eq. 9, cannot be applied in this case. This formula is applicable for static loads where the load increases from zero up to its final value, P, in such a way that the deformation at different instants is proportional to the loads acting at those instants and actually represents the area of a right triangle in the strain load diagram of base e and height P. The typical photographs shown in Figs. 3 and 4 represent the familiar strain load diagrams, and since the line of the wave marks the existence and intensity of the strain with the unquestionable conclusion that such strain has been caused by the action of a load acting continuously all along the wave until it reached the horizontal axis, the work stored at this point is represented by the area under the wave line and the horizontal axis and not by the area of the fictitious triangle given by the authors. Then if this is correct, even visual estimation of these areas at gage stations given in the typical photographs of Figs. 3 and 4 suffice to contradict the authors' calculation given in Figs. 6a and 6b and Figs. 7a and 7b. The typical photographs presented by Charles and de Bruyn show a considerable variation of the intensity of the strain at different stations but very small variation of areas which actually represent the stress energy at the corresponding stations. And, apparently, by squaring the small quantities, the authors magnified their error tenfold. J. M. Frankland's paperV iscusses the relative strain intensity and not the total energy for different types of impact loading. He states in his paper, "The reader is explicitly warned not to confuse the results in this report with those obtained when the load is applied by a blow as from a hammer. In this case the peak load rises to very large but mostly unknown values. The accompanying large deflections and stresses are the result of high values of P, not of the dynamic load factor n. According to Frankland "the dynamic load factor" is the numerical maximum of the response factor. It therefore appears that the authors followed the same procedure in obtaining the relative strain energy ab-

The solubility of nitrogen in liquid iron alloys containing chromium and nickel has been measured in the temperature range 1550° to 1700°C at nitrogen pressures to 1 ah. The solubility surface has been determined for the iron corner of the liquid metallic ternary to 21 pct Cr and 11 pct Ni. The nitrogen solubility increases markedly with increasing chromium concentration. The effect of nickel and the bilinear effect of chromium and nickel are less pronounced. The solubility data are presented, and interaction coefficients are determined from them. THE solubility of nitrogen has been determined in liquid Fe-Cr-Ni binary and ternary alloys. The work in this laboratory has been directed toward a relatively limited composition range, that is to 20 pct Cr and 10 pct Ni. Humbert and Elliott1 studied the entire ternary; but their investigation was, understandably, limited in this region. The region considered here is of the greatest commercial interest. Knowledge of the solubility in these alloys is important for accurate control of the nitrogen levels in various stainless alloys. Also, the solution behavior is of theoretical interest because of its deviations from ideal dilute solution rules at moderate chromium levels. The nitrogen solubility in the iron binaries has been reviewed extensively by Pehlke and Elliott,2 particularly with respect to the dilute solution interaction parameters. More recently, there has been some interest in accurate descriptions of solute interactions in non-dilute solutions. Most of the investigators have adopted a power series fit to accommodate any non-linearity of the data. The Taylor series expansion is adopted here, using Scimar's notation3 for the interaction coefficients. An alternate method, instead of requiring higher-order expansions, is to restrict the range of the composition variables. A planar solubility surface may be fitted to the data and its range of validity determined. If the axes of this region are displaced from the usual origin—the solvent pure iron—a change in standard state is required for the solution reaction. The standard state for nitrogen in iron is commonly taken as the hypothetical 1 wt pct solution of nitrogen in pure iron. However, for an alloy of appreciable solute concentration, e.g., 13 pct Cr or 18 pct Cr-8 pct Ni, it would be convenient to use that base composition as the solvent and redefine the solution reaction in terms of that particular solvent. A brief derivation follows, defining the free energy of solution in an alloy solvent. Following the treatment by Darken and Gurry,4 for a nitrogen pressure of 1 atm: N (pure component) = N (1 wt pct in solvent) [l] AG=RT ln100/ wt pct N in solvent Taking this reaction for an alloy solvent less the same reaction for a pure iron solvent the relation between nitrogen in pure iron and an alloy is: N (1 wt pct in Fe) = N (1 wt pct in alloy) [2] AG = RT[ln(wt pct N in Fe) - ln(wt pct N in alloy)] Adding ½ N2(g) to each side and subtracting N (1 wt pct in Fe) = ½N2(g), the total free energy for solution of nitrogen in an alloy, referred to nitrogen at infinite dilution, is given by: ½N2 (g) = N (wt pct in alloy) L3] AG°3 = -RT ln(wt pct N in alloy )PN =1 atm Interaction parameters have their usual meaning when ?G°/RT is differentiated with respect to the proper composition coordinate. If desired, the dilute alloy treatment may be utilized with the new reference composition as the solvent. This has. indeed, been done by Small and pehlke5 in their analysis of nitrogen solution in liquid 18-8 alloys. The Sieverts' technique was used for this investigation on an apparatus previously described.6 The materials used in this program were: Ferrovac-E iron, 99.95 pct, Crucible Steel Co.: chromium, 99.95 pct, Union Carbide Metals Co.; nickel, 99.9 pct, International Nickel Co. Recrystallized alumina crucibles were used with no evidence of crucible-melt reaction. RESULTS The locations of the ternary compositions investigated are shown in Fig. 1. The data of Turnock7 and small8 have been alluded to in other papers.5'6 There were no departures from Sieverts' law observed for

BY the term making an "electrical log" the authors designate an operation conceived for the purpose of determining electrically the characters of formations traversed in drilling, the determination being carried out by means of measuring the electrical resistivities of the rocks along the uncased portions of drill-holes. As in the case of an ordinary core record, this process connotes a geological studs of the strata, and for that reason it is given a similar designation. The paper is divided into three parts, of which the first deals with the resistivities of rocks in general, since it is through this electrical parameter that they are to be characterized. The second deals with the technique, and the third with the description of practical applications of the electrical logs.

Falls of roof account for over 50% of the fatalities that occur in coal mines in the U.S. Thus, roof control is one of the more important phases of underground mining. In reality, the control of roof influences the system of mining and is a major determinant of the width and spacing of working places, operations at the mining face, ventilation control, and surface subsidence. Frequently, the control of roof is the largest single cost item. Roof control is a never-ending task, not only at the working face and throughout sections where men are working, but along haulways and airways that must be maintained for the life of the mine. This is because roof, even the best of roof, slowly deteriorates, so it must be frequently examined, with corrective support applied when needed. As coal is excavated, stresses are set up in the roof became the previous equilibrium is upset, resulting in pressures that cause fractures and slight, movements that are, frequently, hard to detect. Unless the immediate roof, in the excavated area, is given support by artificial means, it might fall or there might be a succession of falls, varying from a thin scale to several feet, depending on the nature of the top. Exceptions to this are those rare mines, or sections of mines, with hard, strong, nonweathering roof that requires no support. GENERAL CLASSIFICATION OF ROOF There are two broad types of roof as far as support is concerned, the immediate roof above the coal and the main roof. Artificial support for mining purposes is only concerned with the immediate roof as nothing except large blocks of solid coal, or massive concrete, will support the main roof. The immediate roof is generally a few feet thick but can vary from inches to 20 ft or more. There are examples of where there is no immediate roof as the massive main roof lies directly on the coal bed, but this is rare. Impossibility of supporting the main roof and all of the cover

This paper addresses a process by which both the disposal and utilization of preparation plant coal refuse can be simultaneously accomplished with an attendant benefit of significantly increasing the percentage of extractable coal. A laboratory study is described in which coal refuse was successfully utilized as an aggregate in low cost concrete (coal-crete) mixes under simulated mine environments. Coal-crete specimens with compressive strengths of 14 000 kPa (2000 psi) were consistently produced. A construction sequence and mining plans are offered for placing the low-cost coal-crete pillars in accessible areas in room and-pillar mines so that a substantial portion of the remaining coal pillars could be extracted. The method could be applicable in areas where mining procedures do not permit pillar extraction became of possible surface subsidence, roof problems, or other conditions. Possible structural difficulties with the coal- crete pillar support system are discussed. Using a discounted cash flow analysis, the economic feasibility of mining with the coal-crete pillar system is investigated. The cost of the system is compared to the cost of a mining system which would have less coal recovery. The analysis indicates that although at higher coal selling prices the coal-crete mining system may yield an acceptable rate of return, the alternative of leaving the coal pillars is more attractive at the present time.

Various models are discussed for the evaluation of the negative pressures which may occur in solidifying materials which exhibit various deformation modes: elastic-plastic, Bingham, viscous, or creep flow. The inadequacy of the previously proposed elastic-plastic solution for solidifying metals is revealed by comparison with the more reliable creep results which are given graphically for aluminum, copper, nickel, and iron. The maximum tensions experienced in the liquid phase of solidifying spheres ranging in size from large castings to submicron powders are in the range from —10' to —105 atm for these metals. THERE has been much recent interest in the negative pressures associated with the volume change on solidification and in the possibility of the occurrence of cavitation. Considering the freezing of a highly supercooled liquid, an attempt to evaluate the stresses in the liquid ahead of the rapidly moving solidification front has been made by Horvay1 on a microscale and by Glicksman2 on a macroscale. In a casting of a wide freezing range alloy, the pressure differential due to viscous flow of residual liquid through the pasty zone has been discussed by Piwonka and Flemings,3 In a previous publication4 the author has attempted to estimate the negative pressure occurring in the residual liquid of a spherical casting, employing an elastic-plastic model to describe the collapse of the solidified shell under the internal tension. An earlier model assuming a rigid shell was shown to be inaccurate by many orders of magnitude. The elastic-plastic model is critically reviewed here, and other models are developed which are thought to be more closely related to metals and other materials near their melting points. The spherical geometry (Fig. 1) is chosen because the highest shrinkage pressures would be developed, although the analyses are readily adaptable to cylindrical geometry. A parallel sided casting experiences little internal tension because of the relatively easy dishing inward of the sides. (This commonly observed phenomenon has previously been attributed solely to atmospheric pressure.) Furthermore, small regions of confined liquid in a large solidified volume of a casting approximate reasonably well to spherical geometry. ELASTIC-PLASTIC MODEL The author has shown4 that as solidification proceeds the internal hydrostatic tension builds up until the elastic limit of the shell is exceeded. At this point the internal pressure is closely -2Y/3. Subsequently a plastic zone spreads from the inner surface toward the outer surface of the shell. When the whole casting is deforming plastically a rather more generalized analysis taking account of the externally applied pressure PA + 2y/b gives the internal pressure as: P = Pa + 2y/a + 2ys/b - 2 Y In(b/a) [1] The 2y/a and 2ys/b terms result from the tendency of the liquid-solid and solid-vapor interfaces to shrink, reducing their energy, and thereby helping to collapse the solid phase and compress the liquid phase. The 2y/b term would be important only for powders. The last term arises because of the plastic restraint of the solid, resisting collapse and so effectively expanding the residual liquid. From Eq. [I] it is easily shown that there is a minimum in the pressure at the radius amia= y/Y [2] which is of the order of 103K for the metals aluminum, copper, and iron, and corresponds to the minimum pressure Pmin = 2 Y[l-ln(bY/y [3] The results of a fully worked out elastic-plastic solution are given in a previous reporL4 The main criticism which may be leveled at this analysis when applied to metals at their melting points is the strong dependence of the yield stress on the strain rate. The strain rate varies with both solidification conditions (e.g., whether chill-cast or slowly cooled) and during solidification, as is indicated in the following section. Thus an appropriate choice of Y is very arbitrary. Before proceeding to a discussion of models which are strain-rate-dependent, it is necessary to evaluate the strain rate as a function of the rate of solidification. SOLIDIFICATION RATE Various empirical relations have been deduced5 for the rate of thickening of the solid shell by pour- out tests on partially solidified spheres. These, however, are unsatisfactory for our purposes since they become very inaccurate when the liquid core is very small. A theoretical approach is therefore necessary, and some solutions are set out below. Making the assumptions of constant surface temperature of the casting during freezing, no superheat, and a material freezing at a single temperature, Adams8 deduces the approximate solution: which becomes when b » a: Employing a semiempirical approach vallet6 finds:

Although some of the observers who first paid especial attention to the occurrences of oil and gas in the strata (such as Hunt in 1859, Andrews in 1861; Winchell in 1865, Mendelejeff in 1876, Höfer in 1876, Minshall in 1881, and I. C. White in 1883) seem to have been impressed with the fact that oil and gas deposits were connected with the disturbances in the rocks caused by their upheavalll yet, with the exception of Mendelejeff, and possibly Andrews, these observers do not appear to have understood what is really the one essential factor in the occurrence of oil and gas in the strata: viz., the faulting, uplifting, fracturing, fis-suring, and jointing always accompanying even slight rock disturbances, and in certain districts (petroliferous provinces)2 allowing solfataric hydrocarbon emanations to force their way up from the interior and to reach and impregnate the porous portions of sediments subjected to the disturbances. Instead of this simple explanation to account -for the observed connection between petroleum deposits and rock disturbances, most of the observers mentioned above, and many others who have foliowed them on the same lines since, have entirely reversed the problem. To them, instead of the dissemination of gases from fissures into the sediments, it presented the accumulation and concentration, according to anticlinal or other geologic structures, of oil and gas originally present throughout the whole mass of the strata where they were produced by the decomposition or distillation of organic remains. Whether this important problem involves accumulation from sources within the strata themselves, or infiltration and dissemination from outside sources, may be easily determined if all preconceived ideas are put aside and the established facts only are considered. Flaubert, as we know, laid stress on the selection of the right word, le mot juste, the precise epithet, the word that belongs to the thing. A sentence, or even a paragraph, may be spoiled. by the use of a word that is not proper, that does not fit or is foreign to the meaning intended. An Australian mining expert is reported to have said: You have a property of considerable value, and what I saw warrants s good development of very rich cubicular galena, with gossan intermixed. 'Cubicular' means 'belonging to a small bedroom', a 'cubicle' being a sleeping compartment. He meant 'cubic', of course. This is a malapropism, and reminds me of the lady from Chicago that, on her return from Europe, said how much she had enjoyed the rural parts of France, because, among other things, it was "so delightful to hear the French pheasants singing the mayonnaise to the tune of the Los Angelus". It is impossible to amalgamate coal-tar thoroughly with the pulp in the agitating-tank. In metallurgy, 'amalgamate' refers to the combination of mercury with one or both of the precious metals, forming an amalgam, which is an alloy of mercury with another metal. It differs from other alloys, such as brass or bronze, in being made without the aid of heat, inasmuch as mercury is molten at the ordinary temperature. The word comes to us from the Greek through Old French and means 'something soft'. It is a mistake to use technical terms, having a specific meaning, for purposes that are foreign to that meaning. The writer of the quotation is not discussing any combination of metals; he is dealing with the physical process of mixing and is using 'amal-

INTRODUCTION THE recent application of lineal analysis1,2 to the austenite-martensite reaction has made possible a quantitative study of the kinetics of this transformation during rapid cooling. Martensite range curves can thus be constructed to portray the onset of the reaction at [M.] and its subsequent progress as a function of temperature down to and below the ambient. It now seems in order to investigate other aspects of the martensite transformation, using this quantitative method of approach. One of the least understood characteristics of the austenite-martensite reaction is that of stabilization which has been defined by Troiano and Greninger3 as "a lowering of [M.], resulting from aging, without change in chemical composition of the parent solid solution." In other words, if the hardening quench is arrested at a predetermined subcritical temperature (Th) for a sufficient period of time, more austenite may be retained at a given lower or reference temperature (Tr) than if the steel had been cooled directly and rapidly to Tr in the first place. For the purposes of the work at hand, the extent of stabilization produced by the isothermal treatment at Th, is measured explicitly in terms of the excess austenite [(S)] that exists in the steel at Tr, over and above the amount that is normally present after direct quenching to Tr. Tr is conveniently taken to be room temperature, but this choice is not essential and is sometimes undesirable. The holding temperature (Th) may be above or below [M], and still cause stabilization depending upon the chemistry of the austenite. Stabilization has been found to occur in the presence of bainite4 and of martensite5,6,7,8 as well as in the absence of either.9 The phenomenon of stabilization is not concerned with (and may even be obscured by) ferrite formation or any other type of phase change occurring at Th that alters the chemistry of the remaining austenite. Such a structural change would obviously influence the martensite transformation during subsequent cooling. Stabilization, however, is more subtle; it appears to manifest itself without detectable variation of the austenite composition, whether in the presence or absence of transformation products. There are relatively few direct references to stabilization in the literature. The stabilizing effect of room temperature aging and tempering on the subzero transformation of retained austenite has been clearly shown in plain carbon,6.8 low alloy 6.7.8 and high alloy tool steels.10,5 Starting with the as-hardened steel, the degree of stabilization increases with tempering time and temperature through

This paper presents a suitable method for predicting gas-free oil viscosities at temperatures up to 500F knowing only the API gravity of the oil at 60F and the viscosity of the oil measured at any relatively low temperature. The API pravity and the one viscosity value are used as parameters to determine the slope of a straight line on the ASTM slanaord viscosity-temperature chart. Then, knowing the slope of the line and one point on the line, the vrscosities at higher temperatures can be determined. The line slope correlations were developed at I00 and 210F since viscosity data are frequently measured at these temperatures. A procedure is given for predicting line slopes from measurements at other tetnperatures. A nomogram is furnished for solving the relationship. The correlation has been evaluated at temperatures up to 5OOF for oils varyzng in gravity from 10 to 33 " API. The correiution is applicable only to Newtonian fluids. Comparison at 500F of true viscosities and those predicted from values at 100F shows an average deviation of 3.0 per cent (maximum deviation of 6.0 per cent). Predictions from the values at 21 0F for the same oils how an average deviation of 1.5 per cent (maximum deviation of 3.4 per cent). INTRODUCTION Correlations have been developed by Beal' and by Chew and Connally' for predicting viscosities of gas-saturated oils at reservoir conditions. Each of these correlations requires a knowledge of the solution gas-oil ratio and the viscosity of the gas-free oil at the reservoir temperature. For temperatures below 350F, measurements of the gas-free oil viscosities can be made easily using commercially available equipment. In thermal recovery processes, however, reservoir temperatures well in excess of 350F are encountered. Viscosity measurements at such conditions are more difficult and time consuming and require modification of existing equipment or the construction of new equipment. Measurements are further complicated by the difficulty of handling highly viscous oils associated with thermal recovery processes. Therefore, it is desirable to have a correlation which allows accurate prediction of viscosities at high temperatures. A commonly used technique for predicting viscosities at high temperatures is to measure the viscosities at two lower temperatures, plot the values on ASTM standard viscosity-temperature charts and extrapolate to the temperatures desired. If either of the values is slightly in error, the extrapolated value can be significantly in error. To justify an extrapolation, three points are actually necessary. This procedure can consume much time, particularly with heavy oils. Considering the cost of viscosity measurements, it would be desirable to eliminate the need for direct measurements by having correlations which would allow viscosity predictions from other physical or chemical properties. Beal1 investigated the possibility of correlating viscosity with oil gravity at temperatures from 100 to 220F. While showing that a general relationship exists, he also found significant deviations. It is possible that correlations will be developed based on oil composition as more information becomes available. While not eliminating the need for viscosity rneasurements, the method presented herein requires that only one viscosity measurement be made. The API gravity must also be known. The theory is based on the fact that the viscosity of paraffins (high gravity) changes less with temperature than does the viscosity of naph-thenes or aromatics (low gravity). The gravity. therefore, is used as a parameter to determine the slope of a straight line on the ASTM standard viscosity-temperature charts. The correlation is applicable only to Newtonian oils, and deviations due to thermal decomposition and nonhomo-geneity cannot be predicted. Oils containing additives have not been evaluated. PROCEDURE Fifteen oils were used in developing the correlation; eight were crudes and seven were processed oils. Oil gravities varied from 9.9" API (naphthene base) to 32.7' API (paraffin base). The temperature range studied was 81 to 516F. Each oil used had a minimum of three viscosity measurements and each plotted essentially as a straight line on the ASTM charts. In all, 91 viscosity measurements were used in the correlation. Saybolt, rolling ball and capillary tube viscometers were used for the measurements. Viscosity data for Samples 1, 2, 4, 7, 10, 11 and 14 were obtained in Texaco, Inc. laboratories. The data for Samples 3, 5, 6, 8, 9, 12 and 15 were from Fortsch and Wilson,3 and data for Sample 13 were from Dean and Lane.' All data points used in the correlation are plotted in Fig. 1. Copper concentrates produced by many operations in the United States and South America contain chalcocite (79.9% Cu) as a major component, yet the grades of these concentrates rarely exceed 25 to 28% Cu. Mineralogical studies made by E.P. Cadwell indicated that the low grades were caused by dilution by pyrite rimmed with secondary chalcocite. Laboratory and plant tests proved that concentrates could be significantly upgraded by using a simple, low cost cyanide leaching technique to dissolve the rims and reject the pyrite. The many advantages of this new procedure are cited and the process steps and a typical flowsheet are described.

Meeting of Mar. 27, 1914.-President Thayer announced the appointment of H. S. Munroe as a member and E. Gybbon Spilsbury as Chairman of the Library Committee of the Institute. The President announced the appointment of the Committee on Papers and Publications, the Technical Committees, the Committee on Increase of Membership, and the Committee on Junior Members and Affiliated Student Societies. The President announced the appointment of Dr. George F. Kunz as a member of the Reception Committee of the International Engineering Congress, 1915. It was voted that the Institute accept the invitation of the Mining and Scientific Press to occupy space at the Panama-Pacific Exposition next to them and avail itself of the service of their representative to receive and register members of the Institute who visit this space during the exposition.

Although it was known some years ago at the Utah Copper Co. mills that fine grinding improved flotation recoveries, no accurate data were available until recently as to just how far the grinding could be carried economically. In 1923 the ultimate degree of fineness for flotation feed was supposed to be about 10 per cent. on 65 mesh, with approximately 55 per cent. through 200 mesh, which meant that most of the mineral would pass 100 mesh. At this time Garfield and Wilfley tables were used ahead of flotation and a good deal of the coarse mineral removed prior to the ball mill regrind. Shortly afterwards, mill-scale tests developed the fact that on a feed containing not over 10 per cent. +65-mesh material flotation alone would give a copper recovery equal to that obtained by the combination of tables and flotation, but that on much coarser feed the recovery with flotation alone was lowered. This was at a time when all the sulfide minerals were floated if possible, so that the only requisite was to grind fine enough to free the mineral from gangue. Earliest Use of Microscopic Examination of Tailings As early as 1921, the writer had attempted to determine by chemical analysis the relative proportions of copper minerals in tailings from an ore that made extremely poor flotation results. Chemical analysis was not satisfactory or conclusive, and samples of these tailings were sent to the U. S. Bureau of Mines Station at the University of Utah for microscopic examination. The question at that time was to determine, if possible, which copper minerals had been lost and why, but R. E. Head, in his report, revealed other interesting data. He said in part: Briefly stated, the mineral partieles or grains may be classified into scparate groups as follows: 1. Free grains of pyrite, chalcopyrite, chalcocite and bornite, respectively, which contain 110 other included sulfides; 2. Grains in which all three of the copper sulfides are representel (the core may be of chalcopyrite, partially altered to boruite, these two minerals being cntirely surrounded by a shell of chalcocite); 3. Grains composed of equal amounts of bornite and chalcocite or chalcopyrite and chalcocite. The grains of free mineral particles are perhaps the most numerous, taking the ore as a whole, but it is noticeable that of the grains of combined or associated sulfides
