In late 2007 Neptune Minerals Plc. commissioned Genesis - a leading consultancy and engineering company affiliated to the Technip group - to undertake a Seafloor Mining Conceptual Study for mining of Seafloor Massive Sulphides (?SMS?) in Neptune?s New Zealand licenses. A key deliverable of the study was information to de-risk the perception of SMS mining for investors the minerals, and that deep-sea mining of SMS material is technically feasible, commercially viable and can safely be managed as a sustainable marine resource industry. The aim of the study, completed in April 2008, was to evaluate alternative existing marine technologies for seafloor mining, ore lifting, dewatering and surface offtake, considering the following parameters: ? A blast furnace test of approximately 5,000 tons of PelleTech Corporation (PTC) cold bond pellets was successfully run at Kaiser Steel Corporation (Kaiser) Steel Manufacturing Division at Fontana, California. The pellets were produced from mill scale, BOF dust and blast furnace flue dust. A 15 day base period, during which time the metallic burden was 2/3 heat indurated pellets and 1/3 sinter, preceeded the test. During the test period the metallic bur- den was 10% cold bond pellets, 56.7% heat indurated pellets and 33.3% sinter. A 15 day post test base period followed during which the PTC pellets were replaced by conventional pellets. The pellets were produced in the 3.C Semi-works Facility located on Kaiser property. The facility incorporates the Michigan Technological University Hydro-Thermal Agglomerating Process.

This study investigated the operating parameters that affect the kinetic dissolution of copper and cobalt from sulfidic ores. The sulfuric acid concentration, temperature, sodium chloride concentration, particle size range, and leaching time were selected to deduce the kinetic mechanism of the leaching reaction. Other parameters, such as a stirring speed of 250 rpm and the percentage solid 10% w/v, remained constant. The results reveal that an increase in acid concentration enhances the leaching rate of copper and cobalt. Copper and cobalt dissolution was positively affected by the addition of sodium chloride. The highest leaching rates of copper and cobalt were 24.71% and 15.65%, respectively. The chemical control and diffusion control by shrinking core models are well fitted as the kinetic models representing the dissolution of the minerals. The respective activation energies for copper and cobalt dissolution of 10.92 and 31.023 kJ mol− 1 for the chemical control and 18.83 and 37.28 kJ mol− 1 for diffusion reaction control were established from temperature-based experiments.

Use of geostatistics to solve mining problems is gaining importance as the cost of developing new mines is increasing and there is a need to mine more marginal deposits. But, until recently, coal companies have shown little or no interest in geostatistics. However, the stringent quality controls on coal burning has led to a surge in interest in improved methods for estimating clean coal characteristics. Until now, most of the geostatistical applications have centered on the problems of estimating in-situ coal characteristics (Sabourin, 1975; Wood, 1976, 1979; Fang and Stark, 1976; Pauncz and Nixon, 1979; and Knudsen et al., 1980). Little work has been done in applying geostatistics to coal washability, except that by Armstrong (1980). Applying geostatistics to coal washability basically means the estimation of cleaned coal characteristics, with the aid of geostatistics. Cleaned coal estimation plays a very important role in overall emission control strategy, as can be seen by the general flow diagram of such a strategy shown in Figure 1. The scope of this paper is limited to one aspect of the overall emission control strategy shown in Figure 1; namely, the prediction of cleaned coal characteristics using geostatistics.

The Tunnel of Guillermo Gaviria Echeverri, spanning 6.05 miles, will be Latin America’s longest road tunnel, is currently under construction in Colombia’s Antioquia Department with a single bidirectional tube connected to a parallel rescue tube through multiple cross-passages. The study faces challenges in implementing the prescriptive semitransversal ventilation system due to design restrictions. Different ventilation concepts are eplored to nd the most suitable system for regular operation and re scenarios. A quantitative ris assessment evaluates each alternative system and identies the longitudinal ventilation system, accompanied by ris mitigation measures, as the safest choice, since it surpasses the prescribed semitransversal ventilation concept.

Mr. Chairman, members of SME, and guests It is indeed a pleasure to have the opportunity to appear before this group. The topic of this paper is, "Current Trends in Related Industries and Their Influence on Electric Shovel Design and Size". Before getting into the major items, it is well to point out that this text will deal with loading shovels primarily, since their application is almost universal in major open pit mining operations throughout the world. Related industries influence our design in many ways. For the sake of simplicity, these industries will be broken down into two major categories. The first category to be discussed will include industries that will indirectly influence design and size, while the second category will include industries whose products can directly be incorporated by the engineer in the design of shovels.

Mining activity is important for the development of humanity. This development must be understood from the Academy where it allows showing alternatives for the industry performance. Likewise, these mining companies need to improve their results. Historically, a few years ago the application of the ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) criterion was verified, which is positioned as a factor/regulator in the design of the performance of industries in general. ESG as an integral part of the concept of sustainability serves as a tool to conceive mining without conflicts and with a reputation based on trust in the interrelation of the university, industry and society. Therefore, the academy must strive for new knowledge in a way that allows it to continue in the virtuous circle of constantly feeding it. In this context, the best mining practices are implemented in constant questioning of their activities. The scientific essence of the industry supported by the academy developed in an operational dynamic is addressed. Finally, the objective of this research work is to interrelate 3 variables: ESG, Academia, and the Mining Industry, where the transition of knowledge and the role of each variable in relation to each one can be understood. This allows for an additional understanding of mining in the future with new mental attention.

Raw water supply in the central Rocky Mountains often relies on trans-basin conveyance. Many of these older diversions incorporate high-elevation, miles-long tunnels driven over a century ago in hard rock. Tunnels were excavated using conventional drill-and-blast mining and weak ground was supported by timber sets and other various means. Over time, timbers rot and fail, rock quality deteriorates, and the timbers are gradually replaced by more timber, steel patches and braces, formed concrete, rock bolts, split sets, shotcrete, and other means which are commonly applied over existing support, thereby reducing tunnel cross sections, obscuring previous support systems, and rarely addressing the failing rock itself, leading to further deterioration of both the rock and the existing support. Traditional investigation techniques to assess compromised areas are often unfeasible due to access, depth, rubble and voids behind weight-bearing existing supports, confined space, poor invert conditions, poor ventilation, and flowing water. This presentation will discuss design procedures for assessing obscured ground conditions, assigning support classes which accommodate for unknowns, and implementing contractual means to address inevitable surprises or quantity overruns. Case studies include raw water supply tunnels in the Rocky Mountain region constructed between early to mid-20th century.

Atlas Dewatering was contracted to install and maintain a groundwater control system for the new Bessarion Subway Station and the Tail Track Structure on the Toronto Transit Commission’s new Sheppard Subway Line. Atlas met the challenges presented by the project by closely reviewing the contract documentation provided by the Program Geotechnical Consultant, Golder Associates and by working with the general contractors, Bondfield Construction Company and PCL Constructors Eastern, inc., throughout the duration of both projects. In addition to concerns about soil loss, excessive settlement and seepage, the consultant was concerned about spreading hydrocarbon-contaminated groundwater between the two aquifers present at the Bessarion Station site. By installing a system of multi-level vacuum eductor wells around the perimeter of the excavation, Atlas was not only able to provide a dry excavation for construction, but, due to a unique well design was also able to prevent cross-contamination of the aquifers.

INTRODUCTION Dynamic (seismic or microseismic) methods of determining the stability of structures in rock are based on detecting and analyzing the characteristics of seismic energy that has originated from or traveled through the rock mass. This seismic energy can be in the form of naturally occurring rock noise energy resulting from structural adjustments within the rock or can be introduced into the structure by physical means, such as by blasting or impact. In either case, the seismic energy radiating through the rock mass can be detected using standard equipment and can be analyzed by established techniques to reveal a wide variety of information concerning the condition and stability of the rock mass through which the energy has traveled. In the following sections, the basic instrumentation required for seismic and microseismic studies is described, and some of the presently used applications of these methods are discussed to exemplify the state of the art. INSTRUMENTATION Seismic disturbances in a rock structure generate two types of seismic wave radiation, body waves and sometimes surface waves, which radiate outward in all direc¬tions from the source of the disturbance. Underground mining applications are generally concerned only with discerning the characteristics of the resulting body waves, i.e., the compressional (p-wave) and the shear (s-wave) energy. As these two forms of energy travel through the rock structure, the particles of the rock mass are caused to vibrate, and the vibration character¬istics resulting from each of the two types of wave are distinct. Some important differences are: 1) Compressional and shear waves travel at different velocities through the rock structure. 2) The frequency at which each wave causes particles to vibrate is different, and may range from about 50 to 100 000 Hz. 3) The amplitude or energy level of each wave is different, with the shear energy usually being the greatest. These differences form the basis for equipment se¬lection for individual studies and for modern data analysis techniques. The following sections describe the basic equipment necessary to detect and record seismic wave energy data and show several examples of analysis procedures and how these procedures have been used. In principle, seismic equipment is very simple. It consists of a geophone (or geophones) to detect the seismic energy vibration and convert that vibration to an electric signal, an amplification system to increase the level of that signal, and a means of monitoring and/or recording the signals detected. Fig. 1 is a block diagram of a typical system. The following sections offer a very brief discussion of system components and their individual functions. A more complete discussion is given by Blake, Leighton, and Duvall (1974). Geophones The function of the geophone is to detect the vibrations caused by the passing of the seismic wave energy and to convert that vibration into an electrical signal that displays both the amplitude and frequency characteristics of the vibration. Particle motion or vibration can be quantified and measured by measuring displacement, velocity, or acceleration of the particles. Thus, there are three types of geophones: displacement gages, velocity gages, and accelerometers. The choice of gage depends on the characteristic frequencies of the seismic energy to be monitored and the sensitivities of each type of geophone. In general, displacement gages are used for low-frequency monitoring (periods to 1.0 Hz), velocity gages for medium-frequency monitoring (1.0 to 250 Hz), and accelerometers for high-frequency monitoring (250 to 10 000+ Hz). Experience has shown that in underground studies, the choice of which gage to use lies between velocity gages and accelerometers. An easy, accurate method for selection of gage type is discussed by Blake, Leighton, and Duvall (1974). Once the type of geophone has been selected for use, it must be properly installed, and in the installation procedure the most important step is insuring that the gage is firmly attached to a competent portion of the rock structure. Poorly mounted geophones may entirely fail to recognize low-level seismic signals and will distort the information from signals they do see. Amplifiers Seismic events associated with mine structures occur over a very broad range of energy which results in a broad range of geophone output levels. In general, geophone output levels occur in the microvolt to low milli-volt range, and it is necessary to amplify these signals in order to drive recording or monitoring equipment. WHY DO AN AUDIT? There is increased enforcement of environmental laws and regulations at State and Federal levels with attendant steep fines and even the possibility of jail sentences. We are all aware of environmental and public health and safety incidences (i.e., Love Canal, Bhopal) which have led to stringent laws and regulations (i.e., CERCLA, RCRA, SARA). In some cases, the courts have specified that a company institute an audit program as a condition of settlement of claims which related to lack of environmental control. The U.S.EPA issued an Environmental Auditing Policy Statement in the November 8, 1985 Federal Register (pp. 46504-46508) which encourages the use of environmental auditing by regulated entities. Elements of what EPA considers to be an effective environmental auditing program are outlined and briefly explained. These factors combine to indicate why there is a growing number of companies which have instituted an audit program. Briefly, the program can and should be used to monitor compliance with environmental regulations and corporate policy, to prevent violations, to improve policies and procedures, to raise the level of environmental awareness, to encourage communication among operations and all management levels about environmental problems, and to measure risks and control costs. AMAX Inc. has had an environmental audit program since the early 1970's. The AMAX Environmental Affairs Department, working with the Law Department, oversees and coordinates environmental audits and analyzes the findings which an audit reveals. Facilities are audited on a regular schedule; those having the greatest potential for environmental liabilities are audited at least annually; other facilities are audited less frequently. The question of who performs the AMAX audits was settled in favor of the audit team being independent of personnel from the facility being surveyed. Other methods of auditing could be the following: - Independent contractor (Appendix A) - Combination of independent contractor and in-house staff - Self-audit by site personnel The merits and demerits of who should conduct the audit can be analyzed to suit your particular needs. Next you need to decide on the procedure for the audit and the form for reporting and follow up. Environmental publications referenced in Appendix B can be helpful to you at this point. After deciding on the form of auditing, a schedule is prepared and followed to the closest extent possible. This schedule should be published and distributed to the sites so facilities know when they are being audited. This is not designed to be "a game of hide and seek." Various elements of the AMAX Audit Program are as follows: Team selection Pre-visit preparation Site visit Exit interview Report Using the audit Follow-up Team Selection The usual make-up of the team is the audit manager, the environmental specialist who normally provides assistance to the site or has knowledge about the operation, and a legal representative if his or her schedule allows. The legal representative will review the findings of the audit team if a personal visit is not timely or necessary. Size of the team can be expanded, but a minimum of the audit manager and the environmental specialist is best. Two sets of observations are better than one. The environmental specialist can also provide the rapport which is beneficial to creating the appropriate tone so that the site people will be as cooperative as possible. This is not to be an antagonistic exercise.

The 2,250-MW, coal-fired Navajo Generating Station located in Page, AZ draws water from Lake Powell using submersible pumps installed in five inclined shafts. Drought threatens to lower the reservoir to below the existing intakes. A system of new steel-lined intake shafts located on the same site was required for uninterrupted plant operation. The small size of the site, and the need to keep the existing system in operation, required detailed designs and placed significant limitations on construction equipment and activities. The Navajo Sandstone that forms the near vertical shoreline of the reservoir is 98 percent very fine grained quartz, highly abrasive and contains highly fractured intervals that presented numerous challenges to drilling the new 152-m (500-ft) deep, 109-cm (43-in.) diameter intake shafts inclined 23° to 26° from vertical. Spatial constraints, submersible pump design and operational criteria required that each shaft have a unique inclination and orientation and hit a small breakout target located 76 m (250 ft) under water. Sophisticated drilling equipment and techniques as well as state of the practice downhole survey technology and methods were used to make adjustments and maintain drilling accuracy with less than 1 percent deviation. Environmental requirements mandated water as the drilling fluid and grout was not allowed in to the lake under any circumstances. The shafts were videotaped and the breakout locations were examined using an underwater remotely operated vehicle (ROV) to verify shaft locations and rock conditions, and to guide placement of pneumatic packers to ensure grout did not transmit to the lake during the steel liner installation. In anticipation of the invasion of quagga mussels, the shaft design included an allowance for a chemical dosing system and a copper-rich alloy at the exposed portions of the steel liner.

Pyhasalmi is a massive sulfide orebody located in central Finland. The mine has been in operation since 1962. The flotation concentrator produces Cu, Zn, Pb and pyrite concentrates. The plant has used an on-stream analyzer for process control since 1968. The original analyzer has overlived a few generations of minicomputers, but the analytical parts are essentially unchanged. The on-stream analyzer is a critical component in plant process control system, which has made Pyhasaltni one of the pioneers in the art of computer control and optimization of flotation plants. The paper summarizes the experiences gained from the use of the high performance elemental analyzer system and the proven benefits from the use of on-stream analyzers at a complex sulfide flotation. The aging analyzer is approaching the end of its useful life. A new state of the art analyzer system is undergoing testing at Pyhasalmi.

The prolonged exposure of equipment operators to shock and whole-body vibration (WBV) is linked to cumulative back, neck and abdominal disorders. In low coal mines, space restrictions make it difficult for seat suspensions to isolate operators from shock and WBV. Researchers at NIOSH's Pittsburgh Research Laboratory are responding to these issues by investigating viscoelastic foams. For the full-load case, an ergonomic seat made with viscoelastic foams can isolate the shuttle-car operator from shock at 15 Hz. Researchers used results from additional foam testing using an analytical model to identify viscoelastic foams that provide shock isolation at a frequency below 5 Hz.

Stillwater Mining Company has an extensive history with tunnel boring machines (TBM) at the Stillwater and East Boulder underground PGM mines in Montana. The first use of a TBM was a 4 m (13 ft) diameter main beam unit at the Stillwater mine starting in 1988, where 6.4 km (4 mi) of tunnels were driven parallel to the J-M Reef orebody on four different levels. TBM?s were central to the development of the East Boulder Mine as two 4.6 m (15 ft) TBM?s drove two 5,639 m (18,500 ft) parallel tunnels to access the J-M Reef; one of these units is still in service driving a 2,591 m (8,500 ft) access West of the East Boulder mine for the Graham Creek project. For the Blitz Project, a 5.5 m (18 ft) diameter main beam unit will be utilized to drive a 6,858 m (22,500 ft) ventilation and rail haulage level East of the Stillwater mine. TBM?s have been preferred method for developing new mines and sections of the J-M reef as the geometry and geology of the Stillwater Complex allow for faster development compared to conventional methods.

The stability of gateroad pillars is crucial in deep-cover longwall mining, especially during transitions to wider panel layouts. This study evaluates the transition from a 700-foot to a 1,000-foot panel layout with an inter-panel barrier in a deep-cover longwall mine in Southwestern Virginia to identify a configuration that enhances stability and reduces operational risks. Using the LaModel program, three pillar configurations were simulated to assess their performance based on stress distributions and pillar safety factors. These included the previously used 4-Entry Yield-Abutment-Yield layout, the current 3-Entry Yield-Abutment layout with a 220-ft inter-panel barrier, and the proposed 3-Entry Yield-Yield layout with a 320-ft inter-panel barrier. The findings of this study suggest that the proposed 3-Entry Yield-Yield pillar layout is more effective in managing stresses in deep-cover mining environments. By optimizing pillar placement and improving load management, this layout could positively impact mineworker safety and health. The study underscores the importance of advanced simulation tools in developing innovative solutions to address the challenges of modern longwall mining operations.

This paper presents the results of a study conducted on a slope failure that occurred in the Q7 mining cut at Rio Tinto's Bingham Canyon Mine. The slope failure occurred in a weak rock mass with an estimated rock mass rating of 25%. The failure mechanism was of the circular type, involving ten 15-m (50-ft) benches and covered a total width of 152 m (500 ft). The analysis used Adam Technology's photogrammetric method with a two-dimensional rock fall simulation program (RocFall software) to design a 3-m- (1 0-ft-) high berm located 7 m (24 ft) from the toe of the failed mass. Back and predictive analyses were performed on a cross-section through the slide using Slope/W software, resulting in flattening the interramp angle (IRA) from 44° to 38°. This design modification produced a factor of safety (FOS) of 1.14. Sensitivity analysis involving FOS vs. pore water pressure showed that FOS is sensitive to water saturation. A dewatering system using a series of horizontal holes drilled below the slide and dewatering holes drilled from a drainage gallery has since been established to improve the stability of the slope. Throughout the one-year period since this investigation, no significant slope movement has been detected by the slope stability radar, and mining is in progress below the failure.

Many minerals float best with fatty acids in the intermediate pH range. For example, fluorite, a semi soluble salt mineral, exhibits a maximum contact angle and a maximum flotation recovery in the pH range of 6-8 after conditioning in a palmitate solution (fig. 1). The maximum in flotation coincides roughly, as many researchers have observed, with the boundary of bulk precipitation of the fatty acid. According to fig. Z this boundary is in the above case of 5xl0-7 M palmitate approximately at pH 6.3. For assessing the phenomena occurring at the bulk precipitation boundary of fatty acids, the surface tensions of carboxylate solutions have been measured under various conditions. Fig. 3 shows the surface tension development of palmitate and myristate solutions of increasing concentration at pH 12. Also shown are the bulk precipitation edges (BPE) of the respective solid species that is stable under these conditions, that is the potassium acid soap, HKAZ. Both curves display a similar behavior. As the concentration of carboxylat,e increases, the surface tension decreases, until a minimum is reached at which the curves level off. The decrease of surface tension with increasing carboxylate concentration is generally taken to indicate the surface excess of the carboxylate ion. The point where the curve suddenly levels off has not yet been explained. While it is well known that the onset of micellization (CMC) may cause such an inflexion of the surface tension curve, this cannot be the case here because the position of this point depends, as shown in fig. 4 for palmitate, on pH (the CMC is generally independent of pH). We believe that this point indicates the precipitation of a colloidal acid soap (colloidal precipitation edge, CPE) before the bulk precipitation of this species sets in (BPE).
