IIT Research Institute has initiated several multi-sponsored research programs. In this paper the methods for developing four of these programs are discussed. In general, a broad area of investigation must be proposed to interest a spectrum of different industries. The work must not touch upon proprietary data and will probably involve a number of scientific disciplines. Thus, the problem to be solved will attract sponsors who need to know more about the area under study but do not wish, as a single company, to commit the resources required to obtain the necessary know-how for their needs. The paper draws on the background of four IITRI multi-sponsored projects: Size Reduction, a study of grinding of material to reduce their particle size; Melt-Formed Ceramics Research, a method of producing dense, polycrystalline ceramics using glass forming methods; Binders in Ceramic Processing, which addresses the problems associated with the use of organic aids for ceramic processing; and a Study in Air Pollution Technology, a program to review and assess pollution control equipment for current and future applications.

Dolomite is an objectionable impurity in phosphate ores, due to its MgO content. Even though dolomite and apatite liberate at a coarse size, the very similar densities of dolomite and apatite makes density separations difficult. However, if operated correctly, jigging can be a very efficient process. This has led to the development of a unique laboratory scale jig that allows for easy alteration of effective jigging properties. Key jigging parameters have been investigated for the separation of dolomite from phosphate ores. It was found that a pulsation rate of approximately 200 pulses/minute worked best for separating dolomite from apatite.

According to the scientific views formed by the middle of nineteen seventies there should be no possibility of commercial diamondiferous kimberlites in the north of the west European platform. However a later analysis of the geological data gave rise to the concept that diamond bearing kimberlites would be present in the north but on the mineralogical level they would differ from kimberlites of South Africa and Yakutia. Further investigations resulted in the confirmation of these conclusions and with discovery at the beginning of 1980 of diamond bearing kimberlite pipes in the Arkhangelsk region.

"Coal Worker’s Pneumoconiosis (CWP) is an occupational lung disease caused by chronic exposure to respirable mine dust. After decades of steady decline, CWP incidence appears to be on the rise since the mid-1990s, particularly in some regions of Appalachia. Alarmingly, many of these cases have rapidly progressed to the most advanced form of CWP, referred to as Progressive Massive Fibrosis (PMF). Most of what is currently understood about respirable mine dust has been gleaned from routine regulatory monitoring, which tracks total mass concentration of respirable dust (mg/m3) and, less frequently, silica mass content. This paper focuses on the use of thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) as a way to provide basic characterization of the whole composition of the dust, allowing it to be classified into three mass fractions – coal, carbonate, and non-carbonate minerals. TGA was conducted on 59 dust samples collected by miners from eight coal mines in central Appalachia, and the results are discussed in terms of differences between mines, regions, and primary occupations. Consistent with prior results on area dust samples from some of the same mines, results of the personal samples generally show that the coal mass fraction of the dust is relatively low. Carbonate and non-carbonate minerals thus tend to make up the bulk of the dust mass, and vary across occupations and specific mines. INTRODUCTION After nearly four decades of decline, the prevalence of Coal Workers’ Pneumoconiosis (CWP, or “black lung”) in the US has been on the rise since the mid-1990s (Laney et al., 2014; Laney et al., 2010; Suarthana et al., 2011; Pollock et al., 2010; Antao et al., 2005; Blackley et al., 2016). Particularly alarming is the number of cases of progressive massive fibrosis (PMF), which is the most advanced form of the disease (Pollock et al., 2010; Antao et al., 2005; Blackley et al., 2016; Laney et al., 2017). A recent study by Laney et al. (2017) observed 192 US coal miners participating in the Coal Workers’ Health Surveillance Program (CWHSP) who had been diagnosed with PMF since 2000. Of the 163 (85%) that had a normal radiograph on file to use as a baseline, 27 (17%) of these individuals had progressed from a normal radiograph to PMF diagnosis in less than 10 years. Moreover, 162 (84%) of the individuals in that study worked in KY, WV or VA, and 169 (88%) had only ever mined underground. Blackley et al. (2016) also reported on a group of 60 PMF cases that were discovered by a single black lung clinic in eastern KY. Since seeking care at such clinics and participation in the CWHSP are voluntary, and could be influenced by a number of factors, these recent reports may well overestimate the degree of resurgence in severe disease (i.e., versus disease that was previously under-reported). Even so, they highlight a critical need to better understand the cause(s) of disease development and progression – such that effective interventions can be devised."

This paper summarizes the Bureau of Reclamation's experience in the use of boring machines to excavate six major tunnels on the Bureau's water resources development projects in the western United States. The summary of experience is presented as a compilation of brief case studies for each of the six tunnels. Each compilation presents data on the tunnel dimensions, geological characteristics of the excavated rock, the tunneling machine used, machine operation, muck handling, method of tunnel support, ventilation system, and related information. The listing of the six tunnels in Table 1 reflects a diversity of tunnel lengths and diameters. However, despite this diversity of dimensions as well as the variety of rock encountered during excavation, the six tunnels have one major characteristic in common: their excavation was significantly expedited by the use of boring machines. Beginning with the 10,079-foot-long Tunnel No. 1 on the Navajo Indian Irrigation Project in New Mexico - the Bureau's first tunnel to be excavated by a boring machine - the boring machines, or "moles," have demonstrated their effectiveness in rapid and economical tunnel excavation. Tunnel No. 1, virtually 2 miles long, was bored through in 9 months, an unprecedented achievement in Bureau engineering experience, as compared with tunnels previously excavated by conventional means. Subsidence events occurring above inactive room-and-pillar (R&P) mines, including abandoned mines or sealed portions of active mines, are classified as unplanned subsidence, because of their timing and distribution are unpredictable. When investigating such subsidence cases, many uncertainties exist and disputes often focused on whether the observed structural damages are caused by mine subsidence or other natural or artificial causes. However, solid evidence to identify the cause is often lacking. In order to conduct a complete and impartial investigation, thorough knowledge of subsidence theories and other ground control topics, as well as broad experience, are required.

Recent advances in analytical methods, experimental techniques, thermodynamic, phase equilibria and process modelling tools provide new opportunities to increase the productivity of pyrometallurgical reactors, the treatment of complex feeds and metal recoveries. Fundamental theoretical models can now be used to make a significant next step towards the development and implementation of computerised models describing real industrial processes—Virtual Reactors, and computer-aided smart-decision-making systems that may be called Pyro-GPS by analogy to GPS; these developments can facilitate knowledge-based improvement and optimization strategies. The liquid phase mixing in Western Research Centre (WRC) pilot plant flotation column with diameter of 0.76 m has been characterized using a salt tracer. The process variables studied were gas and liquid flow rates. The response of the column to a tracer pulse input was monitored at three axial and two radial locations. For all the experimental conditions investigated in the present study, radial and axial concentration gradients were not observed. It is thus concluded that the 2 tph flotation column is behaving as a well mixed tank. This finding is consistent with the observed poor recoveries of coarse fractions in the column flotation circuit. Based on the findings of this report, it is recommended that several schemes of reducing the backmixing be implemented and evaluated for their effectiveness in improving the column recoveries.

Disintegration of the immediate shale roof in coal mines interferes with ventilation, production, and safety. The effect is seasonal and correlates with high levels of moisture in the intake ventilation air. Disintegration, though not completely understood, is caused by shale dilation and weakening upon exposure to atmospheric moisture. Fluctuating moisture conditions are particularly deleterious, and may be at least partially controlled by "tempering" the air before it is brought to the working places. Roof behavior was studied in an operating mine during a 12-month monitoring period. This approach can be used in developing criteria to reduce or prevent shale roof deterioration.

Industry requires higher speed sheet stacking. High speed sheet stacking requires equipment and techniques to solve several inherent difficult problems, such as the tendency for sheets to sail, and the need for a means to absorb the kinetic energy of the sheet without damaging the sheet. Accurate alignment of the sheets on the stack is another problem difficult to solve. The paper first analyzes the process of sheet handling into its basic elemental steps. It then describes equipment and techniques presently used for moderate sheet handling speeds, with emphasis on how each step in the stacking process is accomplished by the present equipment. The limitations to speed-up of present equipment is discussed. New high speed equipment, either recently introduced to the market, or in the process of development, is described. Magnetic, air float and vacuum conveyor stackers are compared.

The decreasing supplies of natural gas and low-sulfur crude oil available for electric power generation in the United States will unquestionably shift the emphasis to nuclear and coal fired steam power plants in the immediate future. Failure to do so will ensure our dependence on mid-east low sulfur crude oil comprising some 70% of the known world reserves, and imported liquid natural gas. By contrast, the United States has 43% of the known world reserves of anthracite, bituminous and semi-bituminous coal and 48% of all known coal reserves of the world including lignite. It is evident, therefore, that coal is alive and well and will continue to be a significant energy source for the production of electricity for many years. Of course, concern for our environment and the development of new technologies will ultimately curtail the utilization of coal for the generation of bulk power, but information released by the National Electric Reliability Council and the Federal Power Commission is worth repeating. In the year 1972 the total capacity of generating units in the United States was 379,552 Mw of which 149,974 Mw, or 39.5% of the total, was produced by coal fired steam turbines which consumed 344,700,000 tons of coal. New capacity additions planned or in construction show that in the year 1981 our total generating capacity will be 843,503 Mw, of which 257,995 Mw, or 30.6% of the total, if from coal only. Translating this increase into terms meaningful to the bulk material handling industry suggests that ten years from now the utility industry will require 590,000,000 tons of coal per year - a monumental task - if we are to sustain our current demand rate for power.

Providing adequate airflow to effectively dilute and remove diesel pollutants in large mine working headings is a little researched area. A simulated diesel mucking operation was carried out in the Exxon Colony Pilot Mine in Colorado to establish expected levels of diesel pollutants in dead-ended working headings. This heading was nominally 15.3 m (50-ft) wide by 9.2 m (30-ft) high. Two face ventilation systems were tested using sulfur hexafluoride tracer gas to represent the diesel pollutants. The results of these tests showed that conventional face ventilation systems operating at high flow rates could adequately ventilate diesel equipment in the 447-522 kw (600-700 hp) range, even in a dead heading 91.4 m (300 ft) in length.

The exclusion of coal fly ash from regulation as a hazardous waste has led to increased interest in returning ash to the coalfields for co-disposal. A multi-year column study used coal refuse with high potential acidity (4% total-S), and two alkaline ashes in various bulk-blends. The unamended refuse acidified rapidly, producing acidic (pH 1.7) leachates, high in dissolved metals. Treatments blended with sufficiently high amounts (20 to 33%) of alkaline ash produced alkaline (PH >8.4) leachates with low metal levels, while lower ash blending rates acidified over time to produce metalliferous leachates. Examination of solid materials indicated that pyrite oxidation was occurring to some extent in all treatments. A regression equation (r = 0.95) was developed to estimate time to net acid release for mixtures of these materials. Ash alkalinity and refuse potential acidity must be balanced to insure water quality for co-disposal environments, or the ash materials should be isolated away from acidic drainage waters.

En un proyecto patrocinado por el Instituto Nacional de Seguridad y Salud Ocupacional (NIOSH), los investigadores de la Escuela de Minas de Colorado utilizaron un enfoque innovador de mallas, el cual permite una fácil adaptación del modelo CFD para adaptarse a una variedad de geometrías de minado de tajos largos ventilados por canales (bleeders) y progresivamente sellados (referidos a menudo como bleederless en los Estados Unidos), con la porosidad y la permeabilidad de la cámara escalables en un amplio intervalo. En este trabajo se presenta la metodología del enfoque de enmallado y escalado junto con las recomendaciones para el uso de modelos CFD en aplicaciones de ventilación para las cámaras en tajos largos. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling involves the creation of a computation domain called a mesh or grid to solve the equations defining the physics of fluid flow. This process often comprises the majority of time spent in modeling efforts. In a project sponsored by the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), researchers at the Colorado School of Mines used an innovative meshing approach, allowing easy adaptation of the CFD model to adjust to a variety of longwall bleeder-ventilated and progressively sealed (often referred to as bleederless in the United States) mining geometries, with gob porosity and permeability scalable over a wide range. This paper presents the methodology of the meshing and scaling approach along with recommendations for using CFD modeling in longwall gob ventilation applications. The new meshing technique was utilized to evaluate the function of a back return in a progressively sealed gob and a bleeder-ventilated gob.

In July of 1974 a study team comprised of the authors was formed by the Department of the Interior. It was supported in part by funding from the National Science Foundation. The purpose of this study group was to visit coal mines and research and manufacturing facilities in England and Germany, to review the status of mining in these countries, and to identify mining technology which might have application to U. S. mining conditions. The duration of the visit was 18 days. The first week of the trip was spent in England. Time does not permit a complete recitation of the team's impressions but a few of the more interesting technologic developments will be discussed. Of all the industrial clay minerals, attapulgite probably enjoys the widest variety of applications. A review published over three years ago by Haden and Schwint (18) cited some 80 individual uses, a list which continues to grow. In its near half-century of commercial life, attapulgite has received a generous share of research study and patent development effort, both on the part of producers as well as consumers. This work has been divided between understanding the mineral's structure or properties and applying it to specific end-uses. Naturally, information gained from the former has pointed toward opportunities in the latter. References of particular significance are cited throughout the text. Attapulgite's variety of uses derives from the unique three-dimensional structure and needle-shaped particle form of this crystalline hydrated magnesium aluminum silicate. Its inherent colloidal and sorptive properties are well known, and distinguish it from its sister clay minerals. Attapulgite is characterized by its high surface area, porosity, sorptivity, and decolorizing power. Its slips or slurries are viscous and thixotropic, however, unlike bentonite are not flocculated by electrolytes. In Table I are compared the general properties of attapulgite, bentonite, and kaolin. The properties in Table I are documented in greater detail by the wealth of scientific literature which has been published on the composition (14)(15), structure (6)(16), surface (16)(4)(22)(24), adsorption (31)(4)(5)(25), rheology (10-11)(12)(13)(26)(27)(32), plasticity (30) (31), and chemistry (23)(3)(7) of attapulgite. Attapulgite is the principal mineral constituent (70 to 80%) of attapulgite clay as it is commercially produced in the Georgia-Florida area of the United States. As mined, this clay also contains 10 to 1S% montmorillonite, sepiolite, and other clays; 4 to 8% quartz, and 1 to 5% calcite or dolomite. The indirect method of drying coal fines is applied to filter cakes which ordinarily contain 22 to 30% moisture and are not readily transportable. The "Thermal Dryer", which operates on the mass transfer principle, has found wide use in coal preparation plants. The thermal dryer is penalized in operation by the necessity of adding coarse coal to the wet fines before entering the dryer body in order to produce a permeable bed, and thus enable hot gases to uniformly contact the wet mass. The ratio of coarse coal to fines varies from 2:1 to as much as 4:1, depending on the average particle size, moisture, and ash content of the fines.

Ongoing economic success for mining companies is dramatically enhanced when they really know what they are harvesting, such that they can accurately forecast their head grades for any time period in excess of a month. This is an uncommon experience. It is a very common scenario for resource/reserve estimates to overstate the concentration (grade). Grade is a critical input of revenue, and hence, it is to cashflow projections. With the current direction being taken by the legal climate, it is no longer adequate for directors to accept the resource/reserve estimates of experts at face value. This is because resource/reserve estimates are the foundation of primary mineral economic decisions. Directors of mining assets need to undertake their own due diligence analysis of these estimates, in the best interest of themselves, and the company's shareholders. In the light of the industry's past achievements, this is quite a challenge. This paper suggests a set of new objective tools for directors to undertake an overview of the unique commodity concentration pattern and assess associated economic dynamics of each mineralization. These tools allow the examination of global graphical trends that can be helpful to directors and others in undertaking due diligence of resource/reserve statements. Ensure that it smells right.
