Solving ventilation networks of natural air splitting is a classical problem in mine ventilation. A common approach to this problem is to formulate it based on Kirchhoff's voltage and current laws and obtain the solution by an iterative technique known as the Hardy Cross method. In this paper, it is shown that the problem can be formulated and analyzed as an unconstrained optimization (minimization) problem. The computational experience with the method of conjugate gradients is also discussed.

The propensity of coal spontaneous combustion can be evaluated using various laboratory testing methods, such as R70 adiabatic tests, thermal gravimetric analyzer (TGA) tests and critical self-heating temperature (CSHT) methods. Each of the methods has its unique characteristics and index for classifying the propensity of self-ignition of coals. Accountable relationships among the propensity indices of different methods should be established. Using the newly established R70 and TGA testing setups in our ventilation laboratory, samples from U.S. coal mines have been collected and tested. The TGA is a relatively new quantitative method. A test can be conducted in a relatively short time, within about one and a half hours, compared to the adiabatic tests. The temperature and weight of the sample can be measured with high precision and then used to determine the activation energy of the coal, which is a good indicator of the potential for self-heating. Under a specific experimental design, the TGA technique could perform the proximate analysis for determining coal quality parameters (e.g., moisture, volatile matter, fixed carbon and ash content). These parameters can be used in an empirical equation for assessing the potential for coal self-ignition. The trend of activation energies determined using TGA techniques is reasonably consistent with the trend of activation energies determined using adiabatic tests. As a case study, a comparative analysis of these two methods for determining activation energy was made on coal samples collected from Indiana. The kinetics of the spontaneous combustion mechanism has been explained. If the functional groups of a coal such as hydroxyl (-OH), carboxyl (-COOH), methyl (-CH3), etc., activate more easily with a small amount of activation energy at a relatively low temperature, the coal will have a higher potential for self-heating. With the kinetic and coal quality parameters determined by the TGA setup, it has been found that the coal with a low potential for self-ignition has low self-heating rate, a high activation energy and a high minimum self-heating temperature.

"The success of a tunnel project relies on many factors, but one of the most important is also the most overlooked: coordination by all parties involved during the design stages. This is particularly true of segment design and TBM design. Tunnel lining with segmental rings is usually designed according to the standards of reinforced concrete construction based on a given GBR. However, for TBM tunneling, the determination of loads during ring erection, advance of the TBM, earth pressure, and bedding of the articulated ring are all part of the tunnel lining design as well. TBM design can be heavily affected by the segment arrangement, dimension, and weight, but these are usually given as a fixed input to the TBM manufacturer—a process that can cause unnecessary complications. The authors propose that the industry evaluate the process as it stands. In order to find the optimum balance between lining design and TBM cost and operational workflow, both designs should be finalized concurrently. This requires coordination between the TBM manufacturer and segment designer from the early stages. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the influence of the segment lining design on TBM cost and performance, and to provide commentary on existing design guidelines to optimize lining and TBM procurement. INTRODUCTION The conventional project setup for tunnel lining design and the design and manufacture of the tunnel boring machine (TBM) should be coordinated in a timelier manner. It is widely acknowledged that the design of segments must consider the forces exerted by TBM rams during tunnel construction, but other inputs are most frequently provided to the TBM manufacturer as fixed parameters to design around. This paper describes other important factors in TBM design that impact not only the interaction with the segments, but also the construction of the tunnel in terms of overall production and even safety. For example, the segment width and tapering have direct influence on shield body length and thrust cylinder size. Furthermore, TBM geometry can also affect the backup (trailing gear) layout and length."

The recent non-equilibrium electro-phoretic mobility measurements by laser-Doppler electrophoresis coupled with the stability and prevalence of collector colloids in soluble salt flotation systems suggest that the selective flotation of alkali halides is due to the adsorption of oppositely charged collector colloids by hetero-coagulation. Previously reported flotation results confirm this surface charge/collector colloid adsorption model. However, the nature of the inter-particle forces responsible for hetero-coagulation of such oppositely charged particles at high ionic strengths remains to be determined. In this regard, atomic force microscopy was used for inter-particle force measurements at high ionic strengths. Model systems such as polystyrene/quartz and silica/sapphire were studied to measure the particle interaction forces prevalent at high ionic strengths. Results from this study indicate that while repulsive hydration forces exist between similarly charged hydrophilic particles, attractive forces exist between oppositely charged hydrophilic particles in high ionic strength solutions. The repulsive forces between similarly charged hydrophilic surfaces at high ionic strengths (2-4 M) are described by a double exponential function with decay lengths of 0.17 and 1.4 nm depending upon the surfaces involved. On the other hand, attractive forces were observed between oppositely charged hydrophilic surfaces at high ionic strengths (2-4M) and were described by a single exponential function with decay lengths of up to 9 nm depending upon the surfaces involved.

The planning and development of new coal mines is requiring the increased use of geologic, geologic engineering and hydrogeologic investigations. This is caused in part by the fact that new mines must deal with less favorable conditions than existing mines as well as higher costs of development and in part by the dictates of regulatory authority. High costs of new mines require greater reliability of geologic assessment using best available geotechnical and geophysical methods and technology. Although the increased cost of additional subsurface data is significant, the more important factor may be the impact on project lead time.

The Groveland Mine. Concentrator and Pellet Plant are located in Dickinson County in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The construction of the Groveland Mine in 1959 was the first United States operation for the Hanna Mining Company in mining and beneficiating low grade iron formations. (1) The plant produced concentrates at 675,000 lt/yr. (746,600 mt/yr.) which was used as sinter feed in the steel industry from 1959 to 1963. Upon completion of a pelletizing plant in April, 1963 production increased to 1.6 million lt/yr (1.77 million mt/yr) of pellets. After the plant expansion, mill capacity increased to 2.2 million 1t/yr (2.43 million mt/yr.), producing 2.0 million It/yr (2.23. million mt/yr.) of pellets assaying 63.0% iron and 7.0% silica. (1) Prior to April, 1971 the concentrator operated with a flowsheet consisting of spirals and a petroleum sultonate iron notation circuit. This was presented in a paper by R. R. Smith and E. E. Sougstad, "Flotation at the Groveland Mine" in the 50th Anniversary Volume entitled "Froth Flotation". The ore body at the Groveland Mine consists basically of two types of iron formation (34% total iron, 20% magnetic iron head), the most abundant of which is a bedded magnetite-chert-silicate rock. This is intermingled to varying degrees with non-bedded to poorly bedded hematite-clastic quartz-chert rock. (1) In developing the Groveland flowsheet, Humphrey spirals were used because of their ability to produce a coarse size concentrate at a low cost. Tests run in the lab and pilot plant on the Groveland ore showed a. spiral weight recovery in the 27 to 33% range. (2) However as the ore body was opened up, it became evident that the most abundant ore type did not liberate at the coarse size fraction needed for spirals. Plant recoveries for the first five years operating the spirals only averaged from 10 to 15% weight recovery. In 1971 the weight recovery on the spirals had dropped to a low of 5%. To increase iron recovery and at the same time increase plant capacity with the least effect on the present operations the mill flaw-sheet proceeded from a spiral-notation circuit to an all flotation circuit to a magnetic separator-flotation circuit. During this changeover the concentrate grade also had to be improved to meet market demands. To do this the following changes evolved

This paper describes laboratory techniques and subsequent results of Bureau of Mines research to produce chlorination-grade feedstock from an abundant, low-grade, domestic, rock ilmenite ore. The research is part of the Bureau-effort to devise technology that may help decrease U.S. dependence on imported raw materials. A rock ilmenite containing about 46 wt pct Ti02 was smelted in an electric arc furnace with coke, woodchips, and Na2C03 to separate most of the iron as pig iron and to form a low-iron, titanium-enriched slag. The slag was ground, pelletized, oxidized, and then sulfated with mixtures of SO2 and air in a continuous 4.5- to 9.1- kg/h apparatus at 1023 to 1223 K. The sulfated slag, containing 60 to 65 pct TiO2, was reground and leached in water at ambient temperature to decrease the combined levels of the troublesome Ca, Mg, and Mn impurities from 7.0 to 1.7 wt pct. At levels of more than 3 wt pct, these impurities contribute to operating and disposal problems, The final product was upgraded to about 84 wt pct TiO2. This material potentially is suitable for chlorination in a fluidized-bed reactor. The most favorable results were achieved with leached slag sulfated at a feedrate of 4.5 kg/h and at temperatures of 1073 to 1123 K.

The two Agrico Chemical Company self unloading Phosphate Rock barges put into service in 1976 operate at over their design carrying capacity. Each barge now carries 26,000 short ton instead of the planned 25,000 short ton at 32 foot of draft. They are in service between Agrico's Tampa, Florida Terminal and the Donaldsonville, Louisiana Fertilizer Complex, moving a total of 2,500,000 short tons each year. This was the first use of the Parascrew design for a marine application. The barges, with their 3,000 STPH unloading and matching loading rate is the vital link in this total transportation and handling system. Rock is moved from the Pierce, Florida Mines through the Tampa Big Bend Terminal, across the Gulf of Mexico, and up the Mississippi to the Agrico Faustina Phosphoric Acid Plant 30 miles below Bacon Rouge, Louisiana. The trip from the terminal to the plant is 600 miles and the turnaround time is just about six days. Seven years operating experience has proved that the system works. Fittingly, the two barges are named the "Faustina" and the "Pierce". They have a beam of 85-feet and are 495 feet long. folded depth is 43 feet, with a ballasted light draft of 19 feet and a typical loaded draft of 32 feet. There are four separated holds with the machinery room located forward of 101 hold. Each hold is 51 feet wide at the coamings with an 18 foot straight section on the side, and a 24 foot long, 600 slope sheet for a 23 foot clear reclaim width at the bottom. The Parascrew in each of the holds is 37 feet long between the bearings and is supported on a 14 inch diameter hollow shaft. The screw pitch varies and the diameter of the flights step up from l'-9" diameter to 2'-6" diameter on the discharge end. By sloping the centerline, a minimum four inch bottom clearance is maintained across the hold. Some bending of the tube does take place.

The success of any industrial mineral project requires an accurate forecast of the demand for the material. This paper develops a general method of evaluating these needs and applies it to the case of graphite. The basic method is to explain graphite consumption in each of its major uses by the output and manufacturing technology of the using industry. Once these underlying factors are determined, they can be projected to establish future requirements. This demand forecast is critical to the evaluation of a new source of supply, such as the graphite resources of upper Michigan.

Each new period of public concern, whether rooted in things political, social, economical, or technological, brings with it new words or phrases which highlight that new interest. With people's awareness of our rapid depletion of readily available energy sources and the enormous increase in energy .costs came the new, and now often heard, terms "energy intensive", "energy sensitive", and "energy conservation". Since its birth in 1926, Fuller Company had been directly associated and involved with energy intensive products and processes. We are located in the heart of the Cement Industry. Many of our products and processes are geared to the needs of the portland cement manufacturer, and a look at the inferno within an operating cement or lime kiln will certainly convince anyone that here is an energy intensive process. Fuller Company, then, has always been energy sensitive. Process kilns, hard rock crushers, tube and roller mills, fluid bed thermal reactors, pneumatic compressors and conveyors, material coolers - all are Fuller Company products utilizing or transferring large amounts of energy. Consequently, much of our success in the marketplace depends on how wisely we design and plan for efficient use of power and for conservation of each unit of heat available.

The degree of injury and days lost from work due to an injury are examined for selected electrical sources, occurring in conjunction with falls of the injured miner or with selected machinery, that could have been eliminated by use of diesel equipment. Although the number of electrical source injuries that could have been prevented is small relative to the total number of injuries during the period examined, many lost-time injuries could have been precluded and thousands of days lost from work could have been avoided.

Fire hazards can cause severe and irrecoverable damage to reinforced concrete (RC) tunnel linings, threatening the serviceability and resilience of transportation networks. This paper first examines the existing methodologies that are used to classify damage to tunnel linings from fire. These approaches are then supplemented with the results of advanced modeling and inputs from industry experts to propose new fire damage/ repair classifications with the associated thresholds. The results of the presented research can be used to guide fire risk assessment as well as the performance-based design of tunnel fire protection.

For many years the green and dry compressive strengths' of pellets have been, considered as possible criteria of pellet performance during induration. Although widely quoted throughout the industry, little attention has been given to standardizing the unfired pellet compressive strength test or to determining the characteristics of the test. The purpose-of this study was to compare the constant deformation rate test with that using a constant loading rate in addition, the dependence of these tests on such pellet properties as size, weight, and method of balling was to be investigated.

The effect of the chemical composition of pulverized bituminous coal particles on their physical transformation during the initial stages of combustion has been investigated. The results suggested that cenosphere formation does not require extensive thermal decomposition of the coal particles. The vitrinites in the bituminous coal softened earlier and developed larger cenospheres than the othe macerals. The coal particles swell to a higher extent during combustion than in pyrolysis; however, the cenospheres formed in the former process experienced a higher extent of fragmentation. The development of microporosity occurred predominantly after the resolidification of the swelled char particles. The type of macerals originally in the coal did not significantly affect the microporosity of the chars. Conversely, the morphology and anisotropy of the chars were strongly dependent on the maceral composition of the coal.

The first reaction in organizing a project of magnitude is that it's the same as smaller projects -- just bigger. This is not totally correct. The industry's record of completing big-money jobs on time and within budget is not outstanding. From a personal point of view, my question is: What is the project size at which controls are lost? Is it controls? Is it the number of pieces of equipment? Is it the number of decisions to be made? The slowness of communications? Or is it a combination of all of these? In working on multimillion-dollar jobs, the percentage of overrun seems to be lower or show an underrun when the following basics are followed: 1) Preplanning is intensified 2) Data gathering is complete 3) Approach is optimized 4) Planning is realistically scheduled 5) Changes are minimized 6) Decisions are expedited

When paraffinic gases (ethane, propane, butane) are used as the gas phase in flotation systems, the initial rate of flotation and recovery are generally increased as compared with air. The mechanism of the effect of paraffinic gases in flotation was studied and it was shown that they co-adsorb with the collector ions on the mineral-aqueous solution interface. The effect of this co-adsorption was interpreted in terms of apparent increase of the effective chain length of the collector by the co-adsorbed gas. Adsorption densities, contact angles and flotation behaviour were studied on the following systems: a) Quartz - dodecyl ammonium chloride - ethane and propane b) Calcite - sodium oleate - propane and butane. The positive effect of the co-adsorbed gases is a maximum at low collector concentrations or where critical conditions for flotation with air prevail.

Operational excellence is generally known as a management system integrated across critical functions that is geared towards continually improving operational performance. Functional areas such as health, environment and safety, quality and human resources are the focus of many corporate-wide operational excellence programs. Operational excellence also focuses on improving areas such as customer orientation, employee empowerment as well as process, and systems optimization. It is widely viewed as critical to sustaining business performance improvement. Although it is difficult to find a universally accepted definition, or even common foundation in many respects, operational excellence remains a popular term in the business world. Many organizations have developed their own version of organization excellence, influenced by such individual factors, other similar institutions or even third-party service providers. A mining organization is no different from other organizations in that adopting and implementing effective operational excellence programs can dramatically improve business execution and performance across regional or global interests. This paper brings together various perspectives of operational excellence and reconciles them for a useful composite for the mining industry. While most agree that operational excellence should include normal functions in a manufacturing operation such as production, maintenance and engineering and processes such as quality, environmental and continuous improvement, many other factors for operational excellence seem to vary from perspective to perspective. Thus, programs that manufacturers engage in may seem the same, but may, in fact, be different in key areas. This may affect organizational performance in tangible ways. Management must buy into the company?s definition of operational excellence and be dedicated to achieving it. A review of many of the existing definitions of operational excellence, explicit or embedded as part of a program, seems to yield the following common factors: ? It should help organizations better execute their processes and services. ? It should be geared towards improving quality ? It requires that the various operations should be aligned with the overall enterprise strategy. ? It should be geared towards continuous improvement. A composite of operational excellence definitions suggest that it is: ? Geared towards helping the organization achieve sustained profitability; ? tied to strategic alignment and business objectives; ? tied to solid investment strategies; ? integrated as part of the culture, process, time plan and performance; ? a relevant performance measurement system; ? extended to include all aspects of the supply chain (including external suppliers); ? integrated with health, safety and environmental (HSE) aspects. And, while the pursuit of operational excellence intuitively suggests that businesses should improve, it is very difficult to achieve given the difficult challenges facing companies today. Mining businesses face numerous pressures to perform in a global marketplace such as demand, energy cost, variable cost and pricing fluctuations as well as infrastructure challenges to further confound the environment. "From June 16 to 19, more than 1,400 tunneling and underground construction professionals gathered in Chicago, IL for the bienial Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference (RETC). There, they were greeted by a full technical program and an exciting exhibit hall that provided a comprehensive look at the world’s bustling tunneling and underground construction industry.The successful conference was a reflection of the industry itself, which is to say, busy. As much of the world has begun to focus on creating a cleaner and greener environment, the global tunneling industry has seen an uptick in infrastructure projects move from design-build to construction phase. With a global shift away from the use of fossil fuels, major cities around the world are looking to increase public transportation options, which leads to the need for more transportation tunnels. And as urban populations continue to grow, the need for clean water calls for more tunnels, and as urban footprints continue to expand, the need to increase and update combined sewage overflow tunnel grows with them.During two and a half days, more than 20 sessions covering all of these topics were presented at the Hyatt Regency in Chicago, many to packed rooms in which every seat was taken and people were standing along the side and back walls.RETC is a biennial conference and one of the largest in the North America for the tunneling and underground construction industries. As such, it hosts a robust exhibit floor. This year 172 vendors occupied 205 booth spaces. The exhibit included everything from tunnel boring machine manufacturers, like Robbins and Herrenknecht, to the companies that supply all kinds of parts and services to the industry."

The mining complex being analyzed consists of four mines and two processing plants located in an area where there are several existing modes of transportation. Figure 1 shows a map of the general layout of the four proposed mines and the two existing processing plants. The mines are identified by the numerals "I" through "IV" and the plants by the letters "A" and "B". A proposed overland conveyor would collect the product from all four mines and convey it to Processing Plant A. Alternate transportation systems are as follows: Railroad transport from Mines I and II to Plant B; Highway trucking from Mines I and II to Plant A; Off-the-road truck haulage from Mine III to Plant B and from Mine IV to Plant A. River transportation from the mines to the processing plants was not considered in this study under the assumption that the high capital investments for the loading and unloading facilities, in addition to difficult traffic problems, would make this mode of transportation unattractive.
