Tests were conducted to assess the potential of column flotation for beneficiation of a talc ore from Montana. This ere contained approximately 80% talc, with the gangue comprised mainly of chlorite, silica, and dolomite. A tributylamine, MIBC, and sodium silicate reagent suite proved effective for talc flotation. Rougher-cleaner column flotation in a continuous open-circuit produced a final talc concentrate which contained 0.90% Al2O3. 0.17% CaO, and 1.28% Fe2O3. These analyses represented impurity rejections of 77, 85, and 65%, respectively. Weight recovery for this open-circuit was 52%; however, weight recovery was estimated to be 75% with cleaner tailings recycle. Results from this investigation show that column flotation is a viable means for beneficiating talc.

Cu-As feedstocks are among the most problematic copper sources that have been avoided over the past years. The high arsenic content of such ores/concentrates combined with their refractory nature have directed the metallurgical industry towards developing efficient technologies for the treatment of high-arsenic copper ores/concentrates. As the most important member of Cu-As-S mineral system, enargite (Cu3AsS4) is frequently encountered in some of the important copper deposits. Several hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical processes have been examined for the treatment of enargite concentrates, but currently, no commercial operation exists. In an effort to develop an original processing option, an acid bake-leach process has been identified and applied to an enargite concentrate containing ~67% enargite, ~27% pyrite (FeS2), ~3% chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), ~6% sphalerite (ZnS) and <1% galena (PbS). Sulfuric acid baking of this concentrate resulted in the transformation of the concentrate to S8, As2O3, HFe(SO4)2?4H2O, PbSO4 and Cu0.47Fe0.53SO4?H2O, all of which (except elemental sulfur and PbSO4) dissolved during the water leaching step. More than 87% Cu and 64% As were leached when the concentrate was baked at 200°C over 7 h with a sulfuric acid to concentrate weight ratio of 1.6. Less than 1% As was lost to the gas phase. Upon water leaching, copper and arsenic were released to the solution at a concentration ratio of about 3:1. While enargite is very reactive during the sulfuric acid baking reaction, other minerals present in the concentrate such as pyrite, galena, and sphalerite may compete to consume sulfuric acid and be converted into their corresponding sulfates at different levels. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate phase transformations during the acid bake-leach process for the treatment of an enargite concentrate, and to study the effect of sulfuric acid dosage on the extraction of Cu, Fe, and As. In this regard, the concentrate, baked concentrate, and the leach residues are characterized and a conceptual process flowsheet is described for the acid bake-leach process for the treatment of enargite concentrates.

Coal preparation is based on the properties of noncombustable materials (impurities) in coal being different from the organic constituents. The most commonly used property difference is density, via its affect on settling rates; and either gravitational or centrifugal forces can be used to remove impurities. However, examination of various particles settling rate correlations shows that at smaller sizes, particle drag becomes a very important factor. Classification, based on differential settling rates, becomes impractical and some property other than density must provide the basis for fine coal cleaning. Froth flotation and agglomeration employ differences in surface properties to clean coal. These methods are very successful except that the oxidized surface of a pyrite particle is somewhat hydrophobic and will tend to be collected with the organic portion of the coal. Surface property cleaning techniques have not been very effective in rejecting sulfur, except for two-stage flotation.

Mechanisms involved in the depression of the sulfides: pyrite, chalcopyrite, galena and sphalerite with potassium permanganate have been investigated. Flotation tests were conducted using potassium amyl xanthate, Z-6, and pine oil in the absence and presence of potassium permanganate at around pH = 6. 5 naturally yielded by the sulfides in the pulp. On the basis of crystal chemistry considerations, the amount of xanthate adsorbed by the sulfides depends on the amount of sulfur and metal ions present on the surface; thus, the avidity of the sulfides for xanthate should increase in the order: sphalerite C chalcopyrite 4 galena 4 pyrite, and the ease of depression response to the permanganate action should be in the same order. Depression of the sulfides in the system occurs primarily due to the removal of the collector ions by the permanganate ions to form manganese dioxide and dixanthogen according to the reaction: 3 M(RX)2 + 2 Mn04 + 4 H20 2 ? MnO2 + 3(RX-XR) + 3 M+2 8OH where M represents the metal ion, RX the xanthate ion and (RX-XR) the dixanthogen molecule. Results seem to indicate that the permanganate ions play a triple role in the system: (1) they convert xanthate ions into dixanthogen, (2) they further oxidize the mineral surface and (3) if present in excess, they may oxidize the xanthate beyond the dixanthogen stage with the formation of CO2, H20 and SO4. All sulfides, except for chalcopyrite, showed a depression response in the order predicted regardless of the order of addition of xanthate and permanganate reagents. Chalcopyrite did not depress as easily; this behavior may be due to the avidity of the colloidal MnO2 to adsorb Cu+2 ions on its surface, this would destabilize the colloid making it coalesce with the formation of a layer of precipitated MnO2 on the surface of the mineral. The presence of this layer would prevent further action of the permanganate ions on chalcopyrite.

The hydrometallurgical residue generated during the hydrometallurgical processing of waste automotive catalysts is valuable as a secondary resource. In this study, a process of platinum recovery from the hydrometallurgical residue by high-temperature smelting process was proposed. Results of lab- and pilot-scale experiments show a high recovery of more than 98% of platinum and glass slag was successfully obtained by controlling the Fe3O4 addition, C/Fe3O4 mass ratio, CaO/SiO2 mass ratio, smelting temperature, and holding time at 15 wt%, 0.4, 0.6, 1500 °C, and 120 or 60 min, respectively. Results from the pilot-scale show that the platinum contents in the glass slag and alloys were less than 4 g/t and more than 0.6 wt%, respectively. Therefore, the process proposed in this study is a prospective and effective approach for reutilization of hydrometallurgical residue containing platinum.

The company has been: 1. in uranium exploration and production 2. a drilling company 3. a manufacturer of Geiger counters 4. a major tungsten producer 5. then dormat for several years and 6. now we are back into exploration on a broad scale. We have been in underground lead and zinc production in the 1970&apos;s but we are now involved primarily in "wheeling and dealing" in mineral exploration. The company has had diverse interests in the past and we are presently diversifying to some extent into oil and gas ventures.

Does your company reward its top people? Does coal or copper pay more? Production or engineering? How is the synfuels industry going to influence mining salaries? Do high salaries attract and retain the best people? Do modern compensation systems ensure fairness or destroy entrepreneurial spirit? With our tax system and high standard of living why are we so salary conscious? Salary is not only important for what it can purchase but it is also a yardstick, measuring how well we are doing. We all need money to pay the bills and maintain our standard-of-living, but once we reach a certain point the psychological ramifications become more important than the purely practical side. Even necessary payments like the mortgage and the car are a function of our egos. Are our choices of cars and homes based on simple transportation and shelter?

Separation of geochemical anomalies from the background using various methods for identifying areas of higher mineral potential is a critical first step in Greenfield and Brownfield programs. There are several methods for differentiating anomalous regions from the background. The U-spatial statistics is an effective technique that provides the opportunity of reaching this goal by considering the geochemical sample locations in the separation of geochemical anomalies. In this study, a developed form of the U-spatial statistics method is introduced, which not only considers the existence of anisotropic spatial variations in input data but also reduces the computational (CPU) time. While the previous method is based on the isotropic assumption in the study area and a set of search windows at different times, here, the geochemical anomaly is determined by pasting only one ellipsoid window, effectively combining the flexibility of the U-spatial statistics method with the advantages of geostatistical approaches. This paper compares various approaches (the previous and developed version of the U-spatial statistics method, concentrationarea (C–A) fractal model, and probability diagram modeling) for the separation of anomalous areas in the presence of heterogeneous spatial variations. This is done with an application to a Baghqloom porphyry copper deposit located in southeastern Iran. The high potential areas identified via different approaches show an anomalous region in central parts of the Baghqloom area, which partially coincides with an intense potassic alteration area. Compared to other methods, our algorithm separated the high potential areas at a greater spatial resolution.

In most open pit operations mining porphyry type deposits, production planning rests on an are reserve inventory block file which is derived from diamond drill hole data. With such a practice, the way by which block values are generated is critical and in the recent years many studies deal with the comparison of different estimation methods for block grades (Mueller, E. (1), Knudsen et al (2) (3), Barnes, (4), Williamson and Mueller (5). Typically in such studies, one selects a bench or a group of benches where there is a "sufficient" number of blast holes (BH) with assay values in each of the blocks (generally 30.5 x 30.5 m (100 x 100 ft) or 15.2 x15.2 m (50 x50 ft). Then the arithmetic mean of the BH values in each block is computed and it is assumed to represent the real block grade against which different estimated values are compared. However it is sometimes observed that the variation of these BH values within a block is high and that their arithmetic average may significantly differ from the real average grade of the block (Barnes (4). The problem of the precision of the mean BH grade in a block has been examined by Williamson and Langlois (6) in an experimental way. They strove to find a better estimate of the average block grade than the mean BH grade but their results were not conclusive. The purpose of this study is to investigate the same problem within the frame of geostatistical models (David (7). Besides practical results obtained with these models, two general points are emphasized and illustrated in the text. First, "good results" are obtained if "good geostatistics" is done (David et al (8).

The solid-acid character of the activated montmorillonite is imparted by the manufacturing process, giving it unique properties that are exploited in these industries. Several international companies and a multitude of local clay producers are focusing on improving the efficiency of their standard and specialized products. This paper will describe the use of acid-activated montmorillonite in traditional sorbent applications, as a solid acid catalyst, and other new uses.

My presentation is from the viewpoint of the industrial mineral geologist, which is a relatively rare breed. Very few geologists become involved with industrial minerals for two reasons, I think: (1) Much of the industry utilizing non-metallic minerals has developed without the use of geologists in the begin¬ning and many of the management people, who generally derive from the processing plant supervision, tend to take raw materials for granted; and (2) non-metallic minerals are a very insignificant part of the curriculum of virtually all colleges granting a geology degree. One learns about the geology of industrial minerals by working with it. This "on-the-job-training" is probably best because it brings the geologist into close quarters with the production people and the production process. And the industrial minerals field has a distinctiveness when compared with the petroleum or metal mining field in that each deposit can yield a material differing in some aspect from that in any other or within the same deposit. The petroleum from a well in a given field will be similar to that from any other well, but a limestone on one side of a hill can differ signifi¬cantly in elemental composition, calcinability, soundness, specific gravity, or some other factor from the same ledge on the other side of the hill. This characteristic of almost certain variability creates problems sooner or later and provides for much of the employment of industrial mineral geologists. My job seen from the viewpoint of management is "Find us some rock we can extract and process at a profit." The industrial non-metallic geologist has much the same problems and approach as a detective. I do not mean the TV variety with the big mouths and the unfailing knack of spotting the wanted criminal immediately in a city of ten million people. Any real detective will tell you it takes leg-work, knowhow, and persistence to make a case. The same is true for the geologist who finds rock which can be quarried at a profit. In a minerals-recovery context, the object of exercising control over milling operations must be threefold, 1) To achieve maximum recovery at 2) minimum operating costs and 3) making maximum use of installed equipment, Milling is one of a sequence of operations which have as their objective the economic recovery of minerals from mined ores, All operations in the sequence are interdependent and each is both influenced by and itself affects all other unit processes. The part which grinding plays in achieving each of the above objectives is indicated in the following analysis: In South Africa, the most important mining operations are still the gold mines, A vast reservoir of knowledge and experience in treating the Witwatersrand and associated ores has been accumulated. and recoveries are consistently high, However residue values do vary and frequently this is due to fluctuations in the degree of grind, The significance of changes in residue values is indicated by the following example: On a modern mine, the residue values varied from 0,25 to 0,33 dwi; per 2000 lb, during a period of 6 months, The cash value of the gold thus lost varied therefore between $0.44 and $0.58 per 2000 lb, ton. A residue which assays 0.30 dwt per ton would contain approximately 0.26 dwt as undissolved gold and 0,040 dwt per ton as dissolved gold present in residual solution after filtration. This dissolved gold loss is a function of efficiency of filtration and varies from 0.030 to 0,.070 dwt per ton of residue.

Crushing and grinding practice in Sweden follows largely the international pattern. Certain special circumstances, however, have had an influence on the development. Most mines are worked underground in either quite small or in very large units. To utilize small sulphide ores, custom milling is rather common. Apart from the cement industry, the rock species treated are hard and abrasive. Another important factor is the increasingly strict requirements placed on the mechanical condition of different products, especially lump ores and coarse iron ore concentrates. A significant feature in the design and development of Swedish crushing and grinding practice has also been close cooperation between machinery manufacturers and the users. An account of these conditions and an outline of the crushing and grinding techniques employed in Sweden are presented in this paper with emphasis on the mining industry. For background purposes it may be mentioned that crude ore production in Sweden last year included 45 mill. tonsx) of iron ore, of which some 20 mill. tons from Kiruna alone, and 4 mill. tons of sulphide ore from 22 other mines, fig. 1. In addition 8 mill. tons of limestone were quarried for cement production and several million tons of stone and sand for roads, aerated concrete, etc.

Copper electrowinning operations have dramatically improved their ability to produce high quality copper at low costs over the past several decades. Even so, some fundamental knowledge is still lacking that could allow operations to run even more efficiently. For example, a rule of thumb exists that estimates a current efficiency loss of 2-3% per gram per liter of iron in the electrolyte. While several laboratory studies have been performed that demonstrate this rule of thumb is likely true, no definitive relationship exists. In this paper, the first steps in developing a definitive relationship are presented. The effective diffusivity of ferric ions in synthetic copper electrowinning solutions was measured using chronoamperometry and the Cottrell equation. The effective diffusivity of ferric ion was determined as a function of electrolyte concentration and temperature. Synthetic electrolytes were then used in laboratory-scaled copper electrowinning experiments, where relationships between current efficiency and solution composition were found to exist under stagnant conditions. Potassium, is one of the three basic plant nutrients along with nitrogen and phosphorus. There is no substitute for potassium compounds in agriculture; they are essential to maintain and expand food production. Potash is found throughout the world in both soluble and insoluble forms. It is only the soluble forms that are economically attractive to process, primarily chlorides and sulfates, with potassium chloride by far the most important potash salt. Sylvinite ore, a mechanical mixture of sylvite (KCl) and halite (NaCl), is a natural mineral of potassium. This ore is found in commercial quantities in the Permian sin region near Carlsbad, New Mexico. Vast tonnages of high-grade de, low-clay-content ores have been mined and concentrated during the past 40 years; however, these deposits are rapidly being depleted leaving high-clay, low-grade ore reserves of over 135 million tons. These ores, containing 13 to 22 percent K20 and 3 to 8 percent clay slimes; cannot be effectively processed by current commercial flotation methods. The present concentration processes for potash minerals in Carlsbad relate mainly to ores containing 1 percent or less of clay-slimes with a K20 content of 20 to 25 percent to yield products to meet the requirements of the agriculture market, namely, 95 percent KC1 equivalent to 60 percent K20. Discoveries of potash ore in Saskatchewan, Canada, have shifted the emphasis on expansion outside the United States. Presently, the American companies are looking to Canada for future growth, expenditures, and expansion. Four of the seven companies operating near Carlsbad are produces of Canadian potash despite the large investment sons required for shaft sinking and milling installations.

Critical path modeling (CPM) has been used widely as a tool to manage large-scale projects having many activities which are conducted in series or parallel. The construction industry is a regular user of critical path modeling as a planning tool. In this context, the method is used to provide an orderly schedule for all activities to forecast delays, slippages, and problem areas and to identify critical activities where resources should be directed. It also identifies others which have slack time, and provides information on the degrees of freedom and flexibility available in completing the project. The purpose of applying critical path modeling to an underground mining system is not primarily for scheduling, but as an analysis tool. In observing underground mining systems, it Is clear that repeated sequences of activities must take place for mining to proceed efficiently. Some of these activities must be sequential, while others be carried out in parallel. The fundamental difference between critical path modeling applied to mining versus a large-scale construction project are: (1) The activities in a mining system are cyclic in nature. (2) The location of the activity varies, and the entire process is not thought of as co-located, as is the case in a construction project. Another important aspect of the network development for mining systems is the degree of detail that is desired. One can be concerned with very macroscopic networks which represent, for example, an entire mine life cycle. Networks representing this problem would be more closely analogous to those of a large construction project. On the other hand, one might be interested in evaluating alternative ways of developing a property or of mining in a given section. More detailed networks representing the section activities are necessary to evaluate system parameters and their impact on long-term production.

In longwall mining, the progressive caving of the roof allows stored energy to dissipate over an extended time. However, in some cases, the roof strata above the longwall panel are unusually strong and do not break with the movement of the working face. Instead, the roof material bridges over the expanse of the longwall, forming an unstable beam. Later, when this beam breaks, the stored energy can release suddenly, causing a seismic event to propagate to surrounding mine workings. The focus of this paper is to estimate the size of beams that form over longwall panels to the seismic energy recorded by the mine. Analytical calculations are used to verify two-dimensional models of longwall roof beams to determine the strain energy and gravitational energy developed, which is then released upon strata failure to surrounding mine workings. Models are developed using RS2 to model the stress, strain, and deflection along the bottom of the longwall roof beam to calculate gravitational and strain energies. Gravitational energy is shown to be the main driving factor in energy release, except for the beams with low heights. Analyses allow the determination of beam characteristics based on seismic data. The analysis is refined using swelling factor to compare various beam drop heights. The models show an increase in seismic magnitude for higher drop heights. However, the actual data provided by the Buchanan mine displays a decrease in seismic magnitude with increasing drop height, indicating that energy is dissipated into the broken gob material as drop height increases.

A new coal boom is under way in western Canada. As recently as the mid-1960&apos;s, the coal industry in western Canada was considered stagnant and, by some people, dying. But Japan&apos;s growing need for coking coal, which became more pronounced in 1966, sparked great interest in western Canadian reserves.&apos; As a result of a rapidly expanding export market and growth in domestic demand, Canadian coal production spurted to 16.6 million tons in 1970. Production in 1965 was 11.5 million tons. Today, about 60 percent of Canada&apos;s output comes from western Canada, but by 1975, 87 percent (23.1 million tons) is expected to come from this area, and 96 percent (68.3 million tons) by 1990. Opening, developing and operating new coal mines to meet the needs of a rapidly expanding market for western Canadian metallurgical coals pose some unique and difficult problems. Covering nearly every aspect of opening properties in remote areas, the problems are met in exploration, transportation, construction, mine operations, coal preparation, manpower and ecology. Paul Weir Company has been involved as coal consultants on various projects in western Canada for some years. In presenting this paper, we make no attempt to present an in-depth or detailed analysis of any one specific situation. This paper attempts to answer whether or not the mill performance at Bougainville could have, in fact, been predicted by the population balance approach, or whether other special considerations are required to explain their behavior. In recent studies, the plant tests were performed at Bougainville and batch tests were carried out at the Utah Comninution Center. In all tests power measurements were made and several levels of energy input to grinding were evaluated. Also, tracer tests were performed for mill residence time determination. The performance of Bougainville&apos;s 5.5 x 6.4 m mill has been very successfully predicted by population balance methods. The prediction errors are only about 1% on product size distribution and 4% on power with a mill volume scale-up of 3790 to 1. It is significant that this approach will reduce the risk of failure in large mill design that has been recognized in traditional methods.
