Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B. Sc Eng (Extractive Metallurgy) degree Screening is an industrial process that splits material at a specific cut size into one fraction of particles larger than the cut size and another fraction of particles smaller than the cut size. Particles are vibrated to increase the probability of them being accurately classified and to move the oversize particles off the screen surface. In conventional screening, the screen mesh vibrates with a single frequency and the particles on the screen are all exposed to this same frequency. The Ultimate Screener (see Figure 1) is a new screen technology that imparts multi-frequency vibrations to the screen mesh so that different parts of the screen surface vibrate at different frequencies. The Ultimate Screener incorporates an additional deck that holds the multi frequency adapters as shown by Figure 2. These special adapters can transform single frequency vibrations into multi frequency vibrations. When the screen motors are switched on they begin to vibrate. This vibration is transmitted to the adapters via the body of the machine. The adapters then modify the vibration to have multiple frequencies, which are transmitted to the screen surface via resonating rings.

The objective of this paper and presentation is to review the different criteria and methodology used by AEL and other organisations to create a pre-split design which delivers a stable highwall for the life of that part of the mining operation. It will look at the need to adapt and change the way, size and direction of the production blasts as the mining phase approaches the highwall position for which a pre-split has been created. The mining industry worldwide is currently facing a significant restructuring process. In most underground mines, widespread mechanization of the mining processes increases production while reducing staff numbers. At the same time, mining depths as well as the lateral spread of the mine workings are increasing. This ever-changing mining environment requires sophisticated solutions for the design and operation of underground mines. In fact, a reduced number of mining engineers is taking responsibility for everincreasing mine operations. This applies not only to the excavation of the minerals, but also to all other aspects of the mining operation, including health and safety, disaster management, and mine rescue organization. Most mining engineering graduates entering the industry lack experience in mine emergency management. Young engineer trainees must learn mine emergency management and rescue work in addition to their normal training experience on the job. Often, and unfortunately, emergency and rescue training at different mining companies is not carried out to the highest level and standard and with the best possible training outcomes. The tasks and challenges a young engineer faces while being trained in a new position do not leave much room for additional training in mine rescue and emergency management. At the same time, experienced, ?old hands? are retiring and cannot easily be replaced due to limited graduation numbers. Strategies are being developed at mining universities worldwide to train mining engineering students in handling mine emergency situations and to provide hands-on experience for managing potential accident and disaster scenarios underground. Two of these strategies, from the USA and from Central Europe, are presented in this paper. These specific strategies have to be seen under special consideration of the local and regional boundary conditions, but might serve as case studies for mining schools and universities in other countries.

Black Mountain, a polymetallic base metal mine located in the Northern Cape territory of South Africa has been blessed with high grade economic ore for many years. Now that the Broken Hill orebody is nearing the end of its life, a lower grade orebody (Swartberg) is being exploited to supplement production from Broken Hill. In addition, ore from stopes in the upper levels of the Broken Hill orebody is considerably tarnished (oxidized). As a natural result, the remaining ore contains a higher percentage of magnetite, pyrrhotite and pyrite than in earlier years. Bismuth, cadmium and cobalt also occur in the ore in higher quantities. The life of the mine has been lengthened with the discovery of further deeper-lying ore reserves extending from the Broken Hill orebody suitably called the Deeps section. However, to bridge the gap between development of the new reserve and the exhaustion of the old reserve, these lower grade and tarnished (oxidized) ores have to be treated. The mine has had reasonable success in identifying unfavourable or problematic ore types and stockpiling them separately to blend in small quantities with more favourable ore. Bench and plant scale tests have aided identification of the various ore types and significant improvements in flotation metallurgical results have been seen. Copper, lead and zinc metal occur as sulphides in the ore. The mill consists of a differential and sequential flotation process that extracts copper concentrate, lead concentrate and zinc concentrate respectively with silver metal recovered in the copper and lead concentrates. This paper describes the ore blending strategy employed at the mine to maximize the econo-metallurgical efficiency of the operation.

Utilizing a very large database from a mined-out area on a South African gold mine, the relative efficacy of a method to mitigate the smoothing effect introduced by the algorithmic constraints imposed by kriging was investigated. Smoothing effects arising from limited data availability are differentiated from the smoothing arising from the application of estimation algorithms. Very little can be done to ameliorate smoothing of estimates because of too little data, barring additional drilling or sampling. However, the smoothing effects resulting from the kriging process are shown to be mitigated by use of an alternative algorithm. The primary criterion in the development of the new algorithm was to avoid re-introducing conditional bias. This paper examines firstly the smoothing effects introduced into estimates via the kriging covariance matrix, secondly the process for ameliorating the smoothing effect, and finally it uses a case study to demonstrate the effectiveness of the new algorithm on a very large database. The database was used to introduce a 60 m by 60 m drilling pattern which in turn was used to model the semi-variogram and produce 30 m by 30 m kriged block estimates. The follow-up database was then re-introduced (roughly 5 m by 5 m grid spacing) and averaged into 30 m by 30 m blocks to provide a direct comparison with the initial estimates. In this way the extent of smoothing and accuracy of the estimates before and after the corrections was tested.

"The study presents a control strategy implemented at the Nkomati nickel mine flotation plant for process stabilization and improvement. The control strategy involves flotation concentrate volumetric flow rate stabilization and the flotation cell mass pull control. The flotation concentrate volumetric flow rate is operated at a fixed set point. The initial control strategy involved varying the flow rate to maintain the concentrate tank level thereby reducing pump cavitation. The flotation cells mass pull control comprises air rate manipulation into the cells with the exception of the recleaners. The air rate into cells is automated to adjust based on the concentrate tank level variation. The control strategy was implemented on the roughers, cleaners and the recleaner circuit. The recleaner cells air flow rate is adjusted based on the MgO content in the concentrate. The stabilization of the flotation concentrate volumetric flow rate and the mass pull by aerate automation will increase the scope of optimization for further process improvement. The immediate benefit of the control strategy implementation was plant stability. Disturbance to the flotation cells downstream was minimized due to stable flow rate, and the air addition manipulation ensured that the concentrate tank levels are maintained, minimizing pump cavitation. INTRODUCTION Froth flotation is a challenging process because it is influenced by a large number of factors, including the flotation feed characteristics. One of the ore types mined at Nkomati nickel mine is the main mineralized zone (MMZ). The MMZ ore is hosted in the Uikomst complex, a Ni-Cu-PGE-Cr- mineralized, layered basic to ultra-basic intrusion which hosts commercially viable magmatic base-metal sulphides (De Waal et al., 2001). The MMZ ore is a heterogeneous sulphide mineral resource with a varying sulphide mode of occurrence and texture. The beneficiation of the complex sulphide ore is challenging due to the presence of impurities in the ore. The impurities report to the flotation final concentrate and penalties are levied if the impurities are beyond the contractual limits."

Hydraulic support instability (HSI) is one of the most common causes of disasters in underground coal mining, posing a threat to the safety of mine workers and normal operation of the equipment. It is prone to occur in fully-mechanized mining faces with a large mining height (FMMLMH), especially when the dip angle of the coal seam is large. The key to controlling HSI is to deduce its mechanism and employ effective control techniques. This paper focuses on the analysis of HSI types, the key parameters and techniques to control HSI in FMMLMH, the establishment of a model of HSI in FMMLMH, and a multi-parameter sensitivity mechanical model of different HSI forms in the no. 7219 longwall face in Xutuan Coal Mine, Huaibei Mining Group, by using sensitivity analysis . The results show that HSI mainly presents in three forms: hydraulic support gliding (HSG), hydraulic support tilting (HST), and hydraulic support tail twisting (HSTT). The occurrence of the above three forms depends mainly on support anti-instability capability. In the no. 7219 longwall face, HSG and HST are the main two forms of HSI. The dip angle of the working face and the friction coefficient between floor and hydraulic support are the sensitive parameters for HSG, while HST is strongly dependent on the dip angle of the working face and the friction coefficient between roof and hydraulic support. By the applications of measures such as the oblique layout of the working face, cutting the floor into a step pattern, moving the support under pressure, and raising the setting load, the support stability was controlled effectively.

In recent years the requirement for high carbon ferro-manganese (HCFeMn), which is the key product of our company, has increased due to bullish demand for steel products. In our Tokushima works, we have 2 closed types of electric furnaces (1F and 2F), with which we are manufacturing HCFeMn. In order to meet the increase in demand, we made various modifications to these furnaces and we tried to increase the furnace operating loads. Especially for 1F, we deepened the furnace. In this paper, we report the results of this modification. The operational situations of the above-mentioned two furnaces are different because they have different individual profiles. As for 1F prior to modification, the depth of the furnace was one meter shallower than2F, because 1F was designed for the manufacturing of SiMn. On the other hand, our Tokushima works specialized in HCFeMn 14 years ago. However, the profile of 1F was not optimized for HCFeMn. In comparison to 2F, 1F was more difficult to stabilize due to the smaller tolerance for the adjustment of the electrode length, the metal / slag level, and the coke-mixing ratio. We deepened 1F by 770mm by disposing of the furnace rolling mechanism. We consequently achieved a 10% increase in production capacity. This meant the operating load was enhanced from 24.5MW to 27MW, the furnace became more stable and the tapping speed of both metal and slag increased, all which made the tapping easier than before.

Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, zinc, electrowinning Zincor has been producing zinc since 1969 via the roast-leach-electrowinning process. It is the only primary zinc producer in South Africa, and currently supplies the entire country with zinc. The plant was built by Goldfields of South Africa, on the site of an old gold and uranium mine. Since then, the ownership of the plant has changed a couple of times, and the plant and process have also been improved. Production output has increased from around 80 000 tons per year to more than 110 000 tons per year. This was done mainly through increasing the capacity of the roasters and acid plant. Zincor produces four main grades of zinc: SHG, Zn1, Zn2, and Zn4, in three shapes: a 25 kg ingot and 1 and 2 ton jumbos. In 2005, a pre-alloy furnace was built that enabled the production of jumbos pre-alloyed with aluminium. This has allowed Zincor's customers to improve the efficiency of their continuous galvanizing lines and to lower their production costs.

Scaling of rockpasses was problematic at Tau Lekoa Mine prior to production commencing in 1991. High horizontal stress levels relative to the host rock mass strength have been instrumental in causing the observed scaling. Scaling has been more pronounced in the deeper rockpasses and these are monitored regularly. Rehabilitation of one of the reef passes and one of the waste passes was required in the period 1999 to 2001. This paper describes the extent of the problems experienced to date as well as the rehabilitation completed.

Direct reduced iron (DRI), produced by the reaction between iron ore and reducing gasses, is used as a source of low-residual iron, in addition to ferrous scrap and pig iron, in the production of steel mainly through the electric arc furnace (EAF) route of steelmaking. The main DRI technologies in use are those of Midrex and Hyl, but in recent years a myriad of newer processes emerged based on variations in feedstock, reducing agent and fuel sources. Since the beginning of the nineties, DRI has increasingly emerged as a cheaper, low-residual iron feedstock for EAFs, which have traditionally relied almost entirely on ferrous scrap feed. The main stimulus behind the interest in DRI has been the increasing popularity of the EAF and the ?mini-mill? set-up as the favoured steelmaking option compared to the traditional and much less flexible blast furnace/ basic oxygen converter. This, however, has been creating a problem with regard to availability of low-residual scrap, resulting in upward pressure on high quality scrap prices and leaving DRI, traditionally the ?expensive alternative?, as a much more competitive consideration. The second main determinant has been the increasing production efficiency of existing steel plants which, in the light of improvements such as continuous casting and near net shape casting, has been constraining the supply of low-residual domestic scrap, traditionally the prime source of EAF feed. The explosion of current and proposed DRI projects has been accentuating the mounting interest of global role-players in assuring the availability of reliable sources of low-residual iron units for the future, especially in cases where definitive competitive advantages exist with regard to proximity to primary sources of iron ore and fuel (gas or coal).

The CSIR-Ti process employs lithiothermic reduction of titanium tetrachloride feedstock to produce titanium sponge. The product is therefore contaminated by a range of lithium and chloride species. In this study we examine the effects of particle size, temperature, and HCl concentration as input leaching variables on the removal of chlorides from the crude titanium sponge. A review of the aqueous chloride chemistry of Li and Ti provided initial conditions for leaching of impurity species from the sponge. Experimental results confirm that the effectiveness of leaching and removal of dissolved impurities from the sponge are dependent on leaching kinetics, which are influenced by temperature, particle size, and morphology. Of the variables tested, reaction temperature had the strongest influence on the oxygen content of the leached product. The HCl lixiviant concentration had a negligible effect under the conditions tested. Leaching of crude titanium sponge (−10 mm size fraction after crushing) at 14°C in either 1 M or 0.032 M HCl yielded a titanium sponge product that met the ASTM standard specification for commercially pure Grade 1 titanium, i.e., oxygen content < 0.18 mass% and chloride content < 0.15 mass%.

The Hoek-Brown failure criterion is often applied to a wider range of rocks than the isotropic rock masses to which it is strictly applicable. This paper evaluates the patterns of defects in rock masses using spherical projection contour plots of samples of randomly-generated orientations and datasets from mapping of New Zealand closely-jointed greywacke rock masses. Two indices from the contour plots - the area within the 1% contour (A1%) and maximum concentration (Cmax) are introduced for distinguishing uniform (isotropic), random or regular defect patterns. The indices provide a potential extension to current guidelines on the use of the Hoek-Brown failure criterion. The paper also outlines kinematic checks to assess the influence of defect clusters on rock mass strength. Das Hoek-Brown Bruchkriterium, das strikte nur fuer isotrope Gefuege gilt, findet oft einen viel weiteren Anwendungsbereich. Diese Arbeit bewertet diverse Dispersionsmuster der Defekte einer Gesteinsmasse. Wir vergleichen in sphaerischer Projektion (1) Beispiele zufaelliger Orientierung von Defekten und (2) Felddaten ueber neuseelaendisache engstaendig geklueftete Grauwacken. Die Projektionen werden durch die Indices A1% (Flaechenanteil des 1%-Bereichs) and Cmax (Hoechstkonzentration) gekennzeichnet, welche isotrope, zufaellige und regulaere Muster unterscheiden und die aktuellen Richtlinien zum Hoek-Brown Kriterium ergaenzen. Wir testen ferner Defektgruppen der Gesteine kinematisch auf ihren Einfluss auf Massenfestigkeit. Ce travail évalue la distribution des défauts au sein d&apos;une masse rocheuse en utilisant une projection sphérique des contours d&apos;échantillons d&apos;orientations générées aléatoirement et de données de cartographie provenant de greywackes à joints rapprochés de Nouvelle Zélande. The purpose of the project was to propose a coal clearance system (coal transportation system from the mining face to the plant) that could be used for the planned underground operations at Zondagsfontein Colliery. Components of the current coal clearance system were overlooked during feasibility studies. Subsequent studies of the coal clearance system revealed that the combined capacity of the two trunk belts does not match that of the shaft (main) belt. As a result production downtimes will be encountered due to bottlenecks in the system. Ways of addressing this challenge were analysed by weighing both advantages and disadvantages and ultimately a surge bin option was selected. Belt conveyor simulations were conducted in order to determine the optimum capacity of the surge bin. The configuration of the surge bin in relation to the two trunk belts was chosen by considering development cost, advantages, and disadvantages of each option. It was concluded and recommended that a 500 tonnes capacity surge bin is required to remove the bottleneck from the system.

Base metals and platinum group metals can be collected in metallic alloy form, via a wide variety of smelting processes. The recovery, or degree of collection, of the valuable metals is a function of the extent of reduction in the furnace, which, in turn, is indicated by the fraction of iron present in the feed materials that report to the alloy. An equation has been developed that relates the recovery of various metals (such as Ni, Co, Cr, and PGMs) to the recovery of Fe. This recovery equation (for each metal) is characterized by a single parameter (K?) that can either be empirically fitted to the data, or expressed in terms of the equilibrium constant and the ratios of the activity coefficients involved. Data from a number of varied DC arc furnace campaigns are presented to illustrate this behaviour.

Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, furnace, Bindura, nickel The smelter at Bindura Nickel Corporation processes concentrates from its own mines and other external sources. Concentrates are dried, smelted, and converted to a desulphurised matte (leach alloy) for further processing at the refinery. The smelter comprises a drying plant, submerged arc electric furnace, electrostatic precipitator, and three Peirce-Smith type converters capable of treating 150 000 tonnes of concentrates per year. Concentrates are dried in a rotary coal-fired kiln, blended with fluxes, and smelted in a six-in-line submerged-arc 15MW electric furnace. Slag is tapped and granulated for disposal, and matte is tapped at regular intervals for blowing in Peirce-Smith converters. The paper details the 37-year history of the smelter, including furnace rebuilds and operating parameters as they have evolved in response to changing feed compositions. Special challenges, particularly relating to the treatment of high talc concentrates, are also described.

The Tati Activox® Project (TA®P) is the first step towards the implementation of the Norilsk Nickel Activox® process. The ultrafine grinding (UFG) and autoclave pressure leach process conditions are the heart of the Activox® patent. Low grade base metal sulphide concentrates are leached in the process to recover the base metals and to produce LME grade nickel and copper cathodes and cobalt carbonates. The downstream processing of the metal-containing liquor produced by this process includes solvent extraction circuits to extract and concentrate metal-rich solutions, before the various final products are obtained. This paper gives an overview of many of the relevant design aspects taken into consideration in the design of the Tati Activox® solvent extraction circuits. It addresses key design elements related to leach process conditions such as scaling, materials selection for corrosive solutions, pH control, crud formation and treatment, multiple SX trains designed to prevent organic cross-contamination, and design aspects related to the mitigation of fire risks.

The new South African Mineral Policy has major implications on the way mineral rent will be collected and shared between the stakeholders in future. Although the policy does not supply details on how this will be done, drastic departures from practices under the previous dispensation require a new approach. For example, there introduction of the ?right to mine? principle implies that the repealed lease consideration concept will be expanded to all minerals. The new policy also makes provision for predetermined standard terms and conditions for all prospecting and mining permissions. It also states that, regardless of whether the mineral rights are state or privately-owned, all prospecting fees and mineral royalties will be determined by state officials after consultation with the registered holder of the mineral rights. This paper proposes a standard mineral royalty formula that complies with the principles mentioned in the White Paper and has been shown to be internationally competitive.

The Faculty of Engineering at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) offers a core first-year engineering design and innovation course, ENGG1000, undertaken during the first and second semesters. This course is highly regarded in the sense that it provides an introduction to many concepts and activities that students will experience over the four-year minimum for which they are undergraduates at UNSW. Approximately 1400 students enrol in the semester 1 course across the Faculty, typically 80 of which undertake the Mining Engineering stream. Students in teams of between six and eight design and construct a physical model to represent an aspect of their chosen discipline. For example, in 2013 the mining engineers designed and built a model dragline. This paper concentrates a major aspect of the course ? the involvement of team members in group activities and the development of the associated skills of peer assessment and peer review as the course progresses over a period of 12 weeks. The term ?peer assessment? in this paper refers to the requirement for students to assess the design components of their peers. This course has a structured requirement in terms of how a successful design is a result of a sound design process rather than a ?try and see? approach. Each student must describe in detail the process they undertook to achieve their final design ? hence the approach is independent of the discipline and/or project selected. Peer review is a process whereby students review the contribution of their team members to the overall design. This activity encourages team involvement and interaction. The final assessment mark can be moderated by the outcome of this peer review, although it is run twice during the semester. The first ?run? is for feedback only during week six and hence no moderation is undertaken. It was found through consultation with students and from questionnaires that both processes are well accepted and highly regarded by students, as they give them a degree of ownership of the assessment process. In addition, the processes provide rapid and relevant feedback on the progress of individual students. Peer review and peer assessment are also considered to be very valuable tools for use in courses in succeeding years. For instance, many of the courses in mining engineering rely heavily on group assessment tasks.
