Excavations in rock are commonly supported with wire mesh, shotcrete, wire mesh and shotcrete in combination, and shotcrete reinforced with various types of fibres. Wire rope lacing and various types of straps are additional forms of support installed over the above types, to cope with severe conditions. These support systems are very important items of ?membrane? rock support. With the recent development of several types of thin sprayed linings, the importance of membrane support is likely to increase in the future. In this paper, a wide range of mechanisms of membrane behaviour and mechanisms of loading of membranes, is described. The concepts of membrane components, which are single membranes that may be used on their own as rock support, and membrane systems, which are combinations of more than one membrane component, are introduced. Different situations have different requirements of membrane support, and differences between civil engineering and mining requirements are highlighted. With the different basic requirements in these two areas, the requirements of rock support are correspondingly different. A thorough understanding of the mechanisms of behaviour of the different types of membranes, and the different mechanisms by which the membranes are loaded, is essential before a selection of appropriate support can be made, before appropriate design methods and calculations can be determined, and before appropriate performance test methods for membranes can be defined. The material in this paper contributes towards the understanding of membrane support behaviour.

Zincite and spinel phases are present in the complex slag systems encountered in zinc/lead sintering and zinc smelting processes. These phases form extensive solid solutions and are stable over a wide range of compositions, temperatures and oxygen partial pressures. Accurate information on the stability of these phases is required in order to develop thermodynamic models of these slag systems. Phase equilibria in the Fe-Zn-O system have been experimentally studied for a range of conditions, between 900 and 1580°C and oxygen partial pressures (pO2) between air and metallic iron saturation, using equilibration and quenching techniques. The compositions of the phases were measured using Electron Probe X-ray Microanalysis (EPMA). The ferrous and ferric bulk iron concentrations were determined using a specially developed wet-chemical analysis procedure based on the use of ammonium metavanadate. XRD was used to confirm phase identification. A procedure was developed to overcome the problems associated with evaporation of zinc at lowpO2s and to ensure the achievement of equilibria. An isothermal section of the system FeO-Fe2O3-ZnO at high ZnO concentrations at 1200°C was constructed. The maximum solubilities of iron and zinc in zincite and spinel phases in equilibrium were determined at pO2=1*10-6atm at 1200and 1300°C. The morphology of the zincite crystals sharply changes in air between 1200 and 1300°C from rounded to plate-like. This is shown to be associated with significant increase in total iron concentration, the additional iron being principally in the form of ferric iron. Calculations performed by Fact Sage with a thermodynamically optimized database have been compared with the experimental results. The high final total moisture content of fine coal after mining and processing is one of the major reasons that this resource is not extensively used in subsequent power generation, combustion, or other conversion processes. Some coal products, like export coal, may be subjected to a variety of environmental conditions during transport and storage, such as temperature and humidity. To understand the mechanisms by which moisture is attracted and held on and within fine coal particles, further information is needed regarding the processes occurring at the coal surface. In order to determine the correlation between physical coal properties and its moisture adsorption and desorption characteristics, a series of sorption experiments were conducted on various coal samples under climatically controlled conditions. Equilibrium moisture data was collected while changing the temperature and humidity. This data was correlated to coal properties such as particle size, porosity, maceral composition, and mineral content. All the coals that were studied were medium-rank bituminous coals. It was found that the best predictors for moisture adsorption and desorption were the mineral and inertinite contents. Keywords moisture, adsorption, desorption, fine coal, surface properties.

The scope of this project was to research, develop and eventually produce a personal occupational hygiene and safety exposure monitor system to assist in recording and analysing various stress factors that could affect the health, wellness and safety of employees, i.e. that could result in injury or ill health of workers, create stress build-up within individual workers that could negatively affect worker alertness and safety, and, may even result in permanent disability or death. Utilized systems at the time were all reactive, whereas the DOHEMS (Proactive Digital Occupational Hygiene and Safety Exposure Monitoring) System enabled the measurement of exposure (and associated risk) in a proactive manner via real-time exposure and digitized recordings. The idea of the development was to create a unit that is so cost effective, small and light that every worker can use a system on a daily basis. The development will eventually replace current, bulky and expensive monitoring equipment. The device must be a portable battery operated device and monitor the immediate working environment by periodic sampling for vibration, noise, toxic gasses (NO/NOX/CO/VOC, etc.), body temperature and heart rate. The samples must be time and date stamped, utilizing a real-time clock (RTC) synchronized with the closest regional secondary time source and related to synchronized real-time video captured samples. These samples are then recorded onto a rugged non volatile storage device with the capacity to store a vast number of samples covering the entire working shift of eight (8) hours plus. The system has been fitted with a clear visual local alarm indication system, indicating any excessive exposures or stresses, for the worker?s supervisor to respond to. This system allows for a pro-active approach. The system is also a wireless system (to the external environment) so as to not affect the mobility of an employee and flameproof to allow for use in explosive environments. Traditionally, iron ore has been reduced with coke in a blast furnace and the hot-metal product of the blast furnace containing carbon, manganese, silicon, sulphur and phosphorous, was subsequently refined in a steelmaking furnace. During iron making as well as during steelmaking, significant amounts of slag are produced. Two decades ago, more than 13 m tonne of blast furnace slag and 4 m tonne of steelmaking slag per annum were produced in the USA alone. It is, therefore, not surprising that many attempts have been made to re-use iron and steelmaking slags. However, these slags are not merely metallurgical waste products but, on the contrary, their compositions and physical properties are judiciously designed to optimize the operations in the respective metallurgical reactors. The variation in composition and properties of blast furnaces lags are largely determined by the gangue in the ore and ash in the coke and much progress has been made in the re-use of such slag. With respect to steelmaking slag, emphasis has in recent years been placed on hot-metal treatment before refining and ladle treatment after decarburization. The bulk removal of silicon, phosphorous and sulphur from the hot-metal product of the blast furnace by specially designed slags prior to refining in a basic oxygen furnace, has reduced tap-to-tap time, lowered cost and produced steel of much higher quality. The use of synthetic slags in ladle refining techniques subsequent to decarburization in the basic oxygen furnace has resulted in reduced hydrogen and nitrogen contents and reduced solute impurities. Moreover, inclusion shape and composition control, again by the use of specially designed slags has led to the achievement of much improved mechanical properties of the steel. In these revised process routes, slag of different compositions are produced in the variety of unit processes and hence the re-use of steelmaking slags has become much more complex. Clearly, a thorough understanding of the design and use of these different slags is a pre-requisite to the development of re-use strategies. Japanese steelmakers have spearheaded attempts to reduce slag volumes in the individual unit processes and to strive towards ‘slagless steelmaking’ by recycling slags internally. Steelmaking slag volumes have been reduced on commercial scale from about 140 kg/tonne steel to 60kg/tonne steel. Moreover, model predictions have shown that, in principle, all slag can be recycled and the phosphorous extracted to produce fertilizer. Geologists, engineers, technicians and surveyors have successfully utilized technical software in the mining industry for over 30 years. Software for processing survey, geology, mine engineering and planning information make these functions more efficient by automating repetitive tasks and reducing data processing errors. While these systems have been improved incrementally overtime, new systems that represent giant leaps in technology have been introduced to help mining operations increase productivity and reduce costs. However, their widespread use within the industry has left individual companies without a competitive advantage. Additionally, the ability of these applications to provide the productivity improvements required in today’s uncertain market conditions has since peaked. The next wave of technology—integration of independent software applications—is just starting to emerge and will have a significant effect on the productivity of mining operations. To reap the productivity gains required to remain competitive, mining companies must exploit the collective knowledge and experience of every employee in the organization. Integration of independent software application allows companies to leverage information from all activities, enabling staff to make better decisions to improve productivity. This paper outlines the importance of integration as productivity enabler. Key performance indicators, strategic mine planning, resources management and mine-to-mill integration are discussed as processes that enable productivity. The Gemcom Enterprise Mining System (GEMS)is introduced as the industry’s first integrated solution that enables these productive processes. The paper concludes with a comment on the level of change required to realize the benefits of integration.

Crush pillars are widely used in mine workings on the Merensky Reef in the Bushveld Complex to prevent panel collapses. Crush pillars are expected to fail as or soon after they emerge from the face and failure should occur non-violently. Unfortunately, violent failure occurs frequently and is said to be the main cause of seismicity associated with mining of the Merensky Reef. Recent work by Napier, Malan, and du Plessis has shown that limitequilibrium quasi-static models are able to simulate pillar failure using three states of strength of rock in pillars, namely intact, residual after failure, and decayed strength after later time-dependent (viscous) weakening. We have previously introduced an additional state of strength to account for the dynamic failure that results in seismic events, and found that this approach could be used to generate synthetic seismic catalogues similar to observed seismicity for deep-level gold mines, where seismicity takes place mostly on advancing faces. The less brittle seam material of the Merensky Reef, compared to the brittle quartzites and lavas of the Witwatersrand reefs, results in little or no face bursting and is modelled with an assumed plastic strain of some 0.005 over an effective stope width of 2 m before failure. When this plastic yield is surpassed, we allow the reef to fail ?seismically?. We show that synthetic seismic catalogues modelled in this way have some of the features of observed seismicity. Analysis is greatly facilitated using our custom-built software that reads the mine?s survey data into a database and presents results in an interactive graphical form.

For many years rockbursts have plagued the mining industry. Although much research has gone into studying this phenomenon only a small proportion of it has been on the actual source mechanism. A study was recently carried out to compliment the previous work done on the micro-structure of these features and to compare it to the micro-structures seen on shatter cones, from meteorite impacts. Both optical and electron-microscopy were used during the study. Samples were collected from rockburst sites by the CSIR Miningtek Rockburst Investigation Unit, and from the collar of the Vredefort Impact Crater. In the optical-microscopy study, the pinnate fractures observed in previous studies were seen in the shatter cones, through all the material. In the rockburst samples, the fractures were observed only in the quartz grains. Quartz micro-crystals were present in the rockburst samples and appeared to be the product of comminution rather than crystallisation. Cataclasite was present on rockburst and shatter cone fracture surfaces. The observations of the shatter cone surfaces with the scanning electron microscope are in agreement with previous work, including the observed presence of melt features, spherules and spheroidal material. The deformation in the rockburst samples is concentrated in the quartz grains, highly complicated with brittle features like sub-conchoidal structures and step structures present. A quartz spherule was identified on one rockburst sample and rhombic-dodecahedra type micro-crystals were present and seen fracturing off quartz grains. It is clear that the rockburst and shatter cone fracture surfaces are quite different; the shatter cone deformation is equally distributed across the sample and involves plastic-deformation, while the deformation in the rockburst material is concentrated in the quartz grains and, with the exception of spherule formation, is brittle. This study agreed with the current explanation for the formation of the rhombic-dodecahedra, and disproved the possibility of it being coesite or fine-grained meta-chert. Although there is no definite evidence of the mechanism of formation of the spherule, it is believed to be the product of vaporization and condensation, and the presence of this material indicates the extreme conditions under which this event occurred.

New technologies, such as computer based learning, wireless computing, internet2, online courses, distance learning, and in general multimedia applications are being implemented in the higher education sector in an increasing manner. However, these implementations are not coherent, and lack standards. However, one example of the existing standards is the development and implementation of the virtual learning environments. These technology tools help in delivering the eLearning objectives. There is a major initiative in Europe (eEurope action plan) in promoting eLearning towards creating a knowledge-based society. Technology implementation is the major driver for achieving the eLearning objectives. A two-year pilot project on implementing technology tools including virtual learning environment (VLE), video-conferencing, and simulation and visualization was carried out for providing a blended learning environment for undergraduate and graduate students in Mining Engineering (undergraduate) and Mineral Deposit Evaluation (M.Sc.) course at the Imperial College London. The pilot project was funded by the Imperial College Centre for Educational Development (ICCED). The project did contribute towards activities for creating an institute-wide eLearning strategy in line with the eEurope action plan.

This paper outlines a simple methodology for mineral characterisation, developed as part of the Australian Mineral Industry Research Association (AMIRA) managed research project P777 ?The Development of Heavy Suspension Techniques for High Density Separations (Replacement of Clerici?s Solution)?. The project was sponsored by De Beers, Rio Tinto and Iluka Resources. Heavy mineral characterisation of samples arising from exploration, mining or metallurgical processes is frequently conducted using laboratory heavy liquid analysis. Unfortunately, there are only a limited number of high density (?heavy?) liquids and these tend to be more toxic as their density increases. Low-toxicity inorganic solutions, based on tungsten compounds, have been developed that can be utilised at relative densities (RD) up to 3.0. Beyond this value organic liquids can be used, however this presents significant health and safety hazards. Diiodomethane (methylene iodide) having a relative density of 3.31 is commonly used. Mixtures of thallium formate and thallium malonate were found in the early 1900?s by Clerici to provide liquids having specific gravities between 4.0 and 5.0. For the characterisation of the heavy components of mineral sand deposits (e.g. anatase RD 3.9, rutile RD 4.2, ilmenite RD 4.4 ? 4.7 and zircon RD 4.6 ? 4.8) there is currently no heavy liquid alternative to Clerici?s solution. Clerici?s solution is highly toxic and testing is now conducted by few laboratories worldwide with costs reflecting the chemical costs, infrastructure costs and health and safety regimes (e.g. blood testing of exposed staff). A simple laboratory technique of density fractionation has been developed, employing suspensions of fine tungsten carbide particles in lithium heteropolytungstates solutions, that can replace Clerici?s solution in the evaluation of fine mineral sands samples (e.g. -250 +150 microns). The developing methodology that can achieve low-cost, low toxic separations at relative densities above 4.0 is outlined and the comparison of results with Clerici?s solution presented. In addition, preliminary work on density fractionation of zircon samples is presented. Zircon fractionation relates to their inclusion, radionuclide content and metamictization.

Behaviour studies of metal dusting processes and associated filamentous carbon formation were undertaken on Alloys 600, 601, and 800 using a simulated metal dusting environment of 25C0-70H2-5H20 (vol.%) at 650°C. These samples were studied visually and by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX), transmission electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (TEM-EDX) and x-ray diffraction (XRD). Visual examination and SEM surface observation showed that Alloy 800 suffered metal dusting attack at an early exposure reaction period. The coke deposit amounts increased significantly with reaction time from 168 hours to 336 hours in Alloys 600, 601, and 800. Alloy 800 showed pitting after 168 hours' exposure, and the degree of pitting increased after 336 hours. XRD showed all these alloys had a common austenitic phase, with Alloy 800 also having ferritic metal particles. Alloy 800 after 168 hours' exposure had a complex phase mixture on the surface, consisting of ferritic Fe and austenitic FeNi phases. For coke deposit, there were also Fe304, Fe3C and graphitic carbon. The existence of Fe, Ni, and Cr metal particles, and also graphitic carbon in coke deposits, was confirmed by EDX analyses.

Traditionally, mineral reserves management at most underground mines in Zimbabwe focus on maintaining large mineral reserves so that the time between development and production is as long as possible. Historical data at Shabanie mine, a Zimbabwean sub-level caving underground mining operation, confirms this practice. However, the high cost of underground development means that the luxury of large buffer mineral reserves cannot be justified. Furthermore significant increases in the costs of production, exacerbated by the current unfavourable economic climate, make the wisdom of extending development workings well ahead of use questionable. Poor ground conditions at Shabanie mine, mean that some development ends have to be re-mined two or three times due to partial or complete closure between the time they are mined and the time they are utilized. In order to reduce the inordinately high support costs associated with closure of development ends a new ?just-in-time? (JIT) approach that provides development ends as and when they are needed, has been adopted. Accordingly a model to determine an appropriate ?just-in-time? rate of development has been created. The JIT development model indicated that the mine could reduce development rates from 330 m/month in 2001, to 160 m/month in 2002 and achieve savings of about 50% on annual support costs, but still assure customers of a long-term product supply. The mine accepted the model in November 2001 and began implementing it in 2002. Results of the implementation will be reviewed in 2003.

The embrittlement of the Ti-6Al-4V alloy by hydrogen dosing at elevated temperature has been investigated. Metal coupons were subjected to isothermal treatments in a partial hydrogen atmosphere in the temperature range from 650ºC?950ºC and the degree of embrittlement after treatment was determined by drop-weight impact testing. Embrittlement was found to be inversely related to reaction temperature as a result of the combined effects of greater hydrogen absorption and titanium hydride precipitation at the lower isothermal temperatures. This paper describes the concept and development of the use of a uni-delay shock tube system in the timing and initiation of the development rounds, specifically in flat development. It was extended from stoping and now constitutes the only initiation system is use at Kopanang mine. The two explosives initiation systems in general use in underground mines are the conventional fuse-igniter cord system, and the more modern Long Period Delay shock tube system, better known as the numbered LP system. Both are well accepted but have many drawbacks which can result in poor breaking and substantial wastage of the blasting material. Both of these deficiencies cause an increase in the cost of a blast. Hitherto, the limited number of delays available has complicated the use of shock tubes in development blasting. Over eighteen month period to the end of 2007, a project team comprising members from Kopanang Mine and AEL developed a method for the use of a uni-delay shock tubes to time any development round. These uni-delay shock tubes are better known as Reef Masters® or EZ-Stopers® depending on the supplier, and the system has particular application in flat development. During the project, two new shock tube system components were designed, tested and manufactured; namely Splitters and Starter Packs. The system has been successfully tested and implemented in both on-reef and off-reef development ends. At Kopanang, it has now been rolled out across the entire mine. Other AnglogoldAshanti mines are conducting trials and implementations into production sections. Initial results indicate improvements in the ground conditions and excavation profiles. The cost of blasting is showing a downward trend. The authors consider that the system is a tool for use in further blast optimization and will contribute to rationalization of the explosives commodities basket on mines.

The deep level gold mining environment is characterized by high stresses that give rise to intense mining induced fracturing of the rock mass surrounding the stopes. In a geologically disturbed region where the intensity of mining induced stress fracturing is high, the degree of faulting and/or the frequency of other geological features such as joints may pose serious strata control problems. Unfavourable intersection of these discontinuities namely, faults, joints and mining induced stress fractures tend to divide the immediate hangingwall into unstable keyblocks which, if not supported, may result in extensive falls of ground. Effective support strategies therefore demand detailed investigation of the predominant inclinations and orientations of these discontinuities. The orientations and inclinations of these discontinuities surrounding a deep level stope have been measured. The results are projected onto the lower hemisphere of a stereographic net to determine the factors that contribute to the falls of ground in the stope. The analyses reveal that unfavourable intersection of these discontinuities divides the immediate hangingwall into unstable wedges that may become dislodged between support units.

The South African coal mining industry is currently disposing of about 10 million tons of ultra-fine coal (<150 µm) per year. Once discarded, these sulphur-containing ultra-fines contribute to several environmental problems. As part of a project initiated by the Water Research Commission to investigate the use of Cleaner Production (CP) in the mining industry, a study was carried out to determine whether a CP approach could be used to identify opportunities to reduce this coal waste, and to determine which of these opportunities would be most feasible. In order to do this, a CP assessment was conducted at three case study collieries in the South African Witbank coalfield. Mass-balancing and sampling, followed by laboratory characterisation tests and site surveys, were used to determine the quantity, quality and sources of the ultra-fine coal at the three collieries. Literature reviews, brainstorming sessions and interviews then followed to generate the CP options. An environ-mental, economic and technical feasibility assessment was then prepared for each option, to determine the most viable interventions for implementation. A number of opportunities were identified through the assessment. By preventing coarser coal from being discarded with the ultra-fine coal, the quantity of coal disposed of could be decreased at all three collieries, and by up to 24% in one case. Increasing the crusher top size would reduce the amount of coal that is milled to less than 150 µm, so that less is wasted. The ultra-fines that have already been disposed of on slurry dams can be completely reclaimed and converted into a valuable product, which can be sold as power station feedstock. The newly processed ultra-fines could be beneficiated using flotation and exported together with the coarser coal. The results of the assessments thus suggested that workable CP opportunities to reduce ultra-fine coal wastage exist at the sites investigated, and that their feasibility is colliery-specific. The associated financial benefits of the proposed options suggested that CP is a realistic approach to addressing environmental problems. The Principality of Asturias is a region situated in Northern Spain with two centuries of tradition in underground coal mining. In addition, its uneven relief has obliged the construction of a great number of tunnels both for railways and roads. Basing on this experience and an ever increasing need to improve on safety, the Barredo Foundation dependent on the Regional Government and the University, provides and manages a Centre for Research of Fires and Ventilation in Tunnels. The Centre has as its most important infrastructure, a tunnel 540 m long, 9,5 m wide and 8,0 m high at centre. This section coupled with ventilation equipment allows the simulation of risk conditions at real scale, which is achieved by modifying the geometry of the section and through two powerful stations situated one at either en of the tunnel. In addition, the Centre houses two test benches for fans and electrical motors at high temperatures. One bench with a re-circulation conduit is the most appropriate for tests in Transversal and Semi-transversal type of installations. The other, is for the testing of electrical motors or fans which operate in zones where the surrounding temperature is high. In this Centre, training has also been developed for Fire Fighters and Civilian Protection Personnel who have to work in fire and smoke rescue conditions in underground structures. Testing conducted at real scale enables this formation and also to improve different computer programmes in the field of Fires and Ventilation.

Surface properties of metal sulphides have a great significance in various areas of engineering and science, such as acid mine drainage, contaminant sorption, and metal separation. In various attempts at producing metal sulphide particles from synthetic solutions, prodigious quantities of nuclei that grow only to colloidal dimensions have been frequently reported. This copious nucleation is promoted by the high levels of supersaturation that characterize most precipitation reactions. Colloidal particle formation in precipi¬tation-based separation processes results in sub-optimal solid-liquid separation, which is alleviated by the production of more highly crystalline particles or agglomerates. The current work approaches this challenge from an electrochemistry perspective, by measuring surface charge potential of precipitant particles during metal sulphide precipitation with respect to the concentration of metal sulphide lattice ions in solution. Electrophoresis was used to measure the metal sulphide particle zeta potential and the settling properties were obtained by performing settleability measurements using an Imhoff settling cone. A suspension of copper sulphide particles was precipitated from synthetic solutions of copper and sulphide ions at equimolar concentrations. Immediately after precipitation the copper sulphide particles had a zeta potential of -50 mV and a settleability of about 7 ml.l-1. With the addition of copper ions the settleability increased by a factor of nearly three times and the zeta potential also increased to a maximum of -40 mV. A decrease in zeta potential to a minimum of -60 mV was observed after the addition of sulphide ions and this was associated with a settleability of 0 ml.l-1.

In surface mining operations, truck haulage is the largest item in the operating costs, constituting 50 to 60% of the total. In order to reduce this cost, it is necessary to allocate and dispatch the trucks efficiently. This paper describes shovel and truck operation models and optimization approaches for the allocation and dispatching of trucks under various operating conditions. Closed queuing network theory is employed for the allocation of trucks and linear programming for the purpose of truck dispatching to shovels. A case study was applied for the Orhaneli Open Pit Coal Mine in Turkey. This approach would provide the capability of estimating system performance measures (mine throughput, mean number of trucks, mean waiting time, etc.) for planning purposes when the truck fleet is composed of identical trucks. A computational study is presented to show how choosing the optimum number of trucks and optimum dispatching policy affect the cost of moving material in a truck-shovel system.
