OBITUARIES The President: "Before starting on the agenda the first item, of course, is unfortunately obituaries and it is my sad duty to announce the death of the following: I would like to start with a person who is not actually a member of the Institute but who, in his capacity as President of the Chamber of Mines, was Honorary President of this Institute three times and I refer, of course, to Mr Herman Calderwood Koch who passed away last Saturday. Then I would refer to Richard Beaumont Tasker, Life Fellow, who joined this Institute in 1932, and who died on the 22nd of October, 1970. Then, lastly, Mr Jean Francois du Plessis, a student, who joined the Institute on the 19th June, 1968, and passed away on the 11th of November, 1970, as the result of an accident. Mr du Plessis was to have received a Student Prize today for his paper entitled, Displacements and stresses in the vicinity of a horizontal long-wall'. We were all most upset to learn of his death last week, and we are now going to make arrangements to hand his prize to his widow on a suitable special occasion. As a mark of respect to the memory of the deceased, and in sympathy with the bereaved, I would ask you all to stand and observe a few moments' silence. Thank you." Ortlepp for their paper entitled 'The development and application of a digital computer method for the solution of strata control problems' written jointly with F. H. Deist (Visitor) and presented in September, 1969. A Silver Medal to Dr Finkelstein for his paper entitled 'The Influence of sulphydryl and cationic flotation reagents on cyanidation of native gold' written jointly with Dr K. G. Ashurst (Visitor), and presented in June 1969 at the Symposium on the Recovery of Pyrite. ' May I congratulate these gentlemen on the high honour they have won with their papers. As new medals are in the process of being designed the actual awards will be made at a later date to be announced to members.

This paper describes the engineering properties of Givi dam foundation. Givi dam will be built across the Givi River on the andesitic rocks (Karaj formation) in Ardabil province (northeast of Iran). Geotechnical investigations including drilling, pumping tests, sampling for laboratory testing and discontinuity survey. Physical and mechanical properties of andesitic rocks such as density, water absorption, porosity, uniaxial compressive strength, triaxial compressive strength, durability and direct shear tests are evaluated in this paper. Discontinuity data are process for the determination of dominant sets and for the rock mass characterization in terms of classification systems ( RMR, Q and RSR ). Correlations between these three classifications are discussed. In Endefekt wrid die Resultate verschiedeneKlassifizierung wie RMR, Q, und RSR besser geachtet und zusammen vergliechen.

In South Africa, the Bushveld platinum group metal deposits are unique in that they are the largest platinum group metal deposits in the world. These deposits occur as two distinct stratiform tabular orebodies and strike for many hundreds of kilometres. Mining is extensive, with depths ranging from close-to-surface to 2 000 m. The mining method is a variation of planar open stoping. Pillars are widely used to support the open stopes. Crush pillars are commonly used in this role, where the residual pillar strength provides the required support resistance to stabilize the stoping excavations. This paper describes the direct measurement of stress within these crush pillars, and describes the stress?strain behaviour of these pillars. These findings indicate that the measured pillar failure stress is too high. The implications of these findings are that roof damage and pillar bursting could occur, and some examples of this type of damage are shown. The paper concludes that this problem could be mitigated if the three dimensional pillar geometry were modified and the pillars were cut smaller.

Debswana together with ADP as their design partner have embarked on an RDP project at Jwaneng Mine. The objective of the project is to install a 2 million ton per annum mineral processing plant that will fast track the recovery of diamonds from the Debswana tailings resource to ensure maximum return on investment for the company. Due to the prevailing economic conditions Debswana has had to review the way they used to build plants in the past and consider simple, fast and effective ways of doing things. The rapid deployment plant concept is therefore the most suitable means of achieving this objective. Debswana is also considering an operating partner who will operate far more efficiently and cheaply compared to the larger more cumbersome and less agile Debswana.

Copper remains one of the most sought-after metals in the industry. Tennantite (Cu12As4S13) and tetrahedrite (Cu12Sb4S13) that occur in pyrite copper, copper-zinc and polymetallic ores are an additional reserve for increasing technological parameters of flotation. Pyrite mass (85% and more) has similar flotation properties to other sulfide minerals, and imperfection of reagent regime is a common problem that occurs during quality copper concentrate processing. Due to tennantite's and chalcopyrite's differences in flotation properties with butyl xanthate at pH > 10, tennantite often reports to the flotation tails. Hight alkalinity of the medium increases the oxidation level of sulfide minerals, thus increasing the concentration of S2O3 2-, SO3 2- SO4 2-. At processing facilities in the Russian Federation, the concentration of thiosulfate ions in pulp is in the range of 0.5 to 1.5 g/l and higher, which leads to a decrease in flotation activity of the tennantite. The effect of butyl xanthate (as standard), thionocarbamate, dithiophosphate and M-TF (a mixture of dithiophosphate and thionocarbamate) on monomineral (tennantite and pyrite) flotation in the presence of sodium thiosulfate was studied. The variable parameters of the "thiosulfate-collector" flotation complex were thiosulfate concentration (100-900); pH (8-12,5). The scientific methods included contact angle for hydration assessment; TEM for surface studies; UV spectroscopy and iodometric titration for solubility control. Comprehensive studies have established a connection between the concentration of thiosulfate ions and tennantite flotation selectivity. Flotation activity of tennantite is higher at pH 8 with a thiosulfate concentration under 300 mg/l. Pyrite remains active with butyl xanthate under the same conditions. TEM images of the surface films of the collectors on pyrite were acquired at pH 8. The MTF provides the biggest difference in adsorption, wettability and flotation activity between tennantite and pyrite at pH 8 and thiosulfate concentration under 300 mg/l, in comparison with butyl xanthate. The results of the research will be applied to improve selective reagent regimes of tennantite minerals flotation. In many practical situations, calculation of the point semivariogram is not necessary. Such a case is analysed in this chapter. The purpose of this analysis is to give a better understanding of the meaning of the mathematical formulae developed in the previous chapters. A similar problem will be studied in Chapter 11, using the point semivariogram.

A description is given of the design of the continuous ion-exchange demonstration plant at Blyvooruitzicht Gold Mine, including details of the process design, the column construction, and the control system. The operating and process results gathered over a period of seventeen months are summarized, and development work and modifications to the process are discussed. It is concluded that the system comprising continuous loading and continuous elution is technically feasible and can be scaled up with confidence.

Improvements in the drilling and blasting techniques used in the stopes of narrow reefs have caused the clearing of broken rock to become the major cause of delay in the achievement of a regular cyclic operation. This paper discusses the development of a scoop in accordance with a predetermined set of performance parameters. The test results obtained to date have shown that the basic objectives have been achieved within tolerable limits of variation.

Background to the Transvaal Iron Age-new discoveries at Olifantspoort and Broederstroom R. J. MASON*, Ph.D. (Visitor) The work being done on Iron Age sites in the Transvaal is described, with particular reference to the finds at Olifantspoort and Broederstroom. The material so far found provides evidence for the production of iron and copper, the farming of cattle and sheep, and the construction of large villages by people who were probably ancestral to the present Bantu population. The material dates from as early as A.D. 270, but clear indications occur from AD. 460 onwards.
