A variety of backfills is presently being placed in different gold mines. The backfills are pumped as slurries to stopes where they are discharged into some form of retaining paddock. The effectiveness of fill as a support medium will depend on a number of factors. These can largely include (i) inherent properties of the material, e.g. particle size, shape, distribution and com- position, and (ii) conditions of placement. The terminology required for describing backfills is introduced, and the various laboratory-measured properties are presented for a variety of fills. Finally, the properties of the fills as they are placed underground are discussed.

Interpretation of Leached Outcrops, by Roland Blanchard. Published by Nevada Bureau of Mines, University of Nevada, Reno, Nevada, 89507, 1968, 188 pages. Price $7.50 (R5.40). This book contains a summary of the author's knowledge of leached outcrops, derived from some 30 years' experience as a geologist operating mainly in the United States of America and Australia. Part 1 of the book provides a comprehensive coverage of the various processes and substances involved in the oxidation of many minerals, under different climatic conditions, to form the final leached products. In Part 2, details are given of the appearance and composition of the oxidation products of the following minerals: pyrite, pyrrhotite, arsenopyrite, cha1copyrite, cha1cocite, bornite, tetrahedrite, oxidized copper minerals, galena, cerussite, sphalerite, molybdenite, chromite, hematite, magnetite, manganite, pyrolusite, calcite, siderite, fluorite, salite and supergene silica. The illustrations, the black and white photographs and the colour plates of oxidation products are of a high standard. The material is presented in a logical order and in terms which are not over-technical; hence it is useful to persons other than trained geologists. Despite the advances in geophysical and geochemical prospecting, the location and interpretation of gossans remains an important method of discovering ore bodies, particularly so since the correct interpretation of a leached material can prevent the fruitless and expensive prospecting of an underlying body of uneconomic concentration. Therefore it is considered that this volume will be a valuable addition to the libraries of universities, exploration companies and geologists. It is of interest to note that the author, who died in 1966, presented a paper, under the same title as this book, to the Chemical, Metallurgical and Mining Society of South Africa in 1939. An investigation is described in which the resistivities of Mamatwan manganese ore, Delmas coal, and Iscor coke, at temperatures or up to 1400°C were determined, as well as the resistivities of mixtures of ore of a constant size range with Delmas coal or Iscor coke of three different size ranges. The resistivities of the ore and the coal were characteristic of those for semi-conducting materials, were strongly influenced by temperature, and decreased by several orders of magnitude between room temperature and IOOO°C. The resistivity of the coke changed only slightly between room temperature and 1400°C, and the resistivity of the coal approached that of the coke at I300°C. This provides support for the theory that the resistivity of carbonaceous reducing agents is primarily a function of heat treatment, and not of the rank and composition of the coal. Above 1200°C, the resistivity of mixtures of ore and coke fell steeply owing to an increase in the volume fraction of coke in the mixture and to the formation of slag. The results were similar for the three different size ranges of coke. The extremely high resistivities of ore-coke and ore-coal mixtures at Iow temperatures indicate that there is unlikely to be much conduction of current in the higher regions of a furnace. Thus, the resistance of a furnace is governed mainly by the conditions at the electrode tips and in the molten regions. To explain the very Iow resistances of furnaces, usually, about I m£?, it would be necessary for investigations to be conducted under conditions similar to those in the active zone of a furnace.

For direct or post solvent extraction copper electrowinning design, key theoretical considerations include current density and efficiency, electrolyte ion concentrations, cell voltages and electrode over potentials, physical cell dimensions, cell flow rates and electrode face velocities, and electrolyte temperature. Practical considerations for optimal project goals are location of plant, layout of tank house and ancillary equipment, elevations, type of cell furniture, required cathode quality, number and type of cells, material of construction of cells, structure and interconnecting equipment, production cycles, anode and cathode material of construction and dimensions, cathode stripping philosophy, plating aids, acid mist management, piping layouts, standard electrical equipment sizes, electrolyte filtration, impurity concentrations, bus bar and rectifier/transformer design, electrical isolation protection, crane management, sampling and quality control management, staffing skills and client expectations. All of the above are required to produce an engineered product that can be designed easily, constructed quickly and operated with flexibility.

The simulation of multi-component classification with modified viscosity model is the key focus in the current study. The classification of the ores using hydrocyclone is a renowned process and has a convoluted flow separation phenomenon. The highly turbulent flow inside hydrocyclone depends on the operating and design parameters apart from the feed mixture. Slurry viscosity also plays a dominant role in the classification of solid particles under the centrifugal settling action. A heterogeneous mixture with different components would result in different settling and rheological behaviour of particles’ suspension in the water medium. The newly proposed multi-component viscosity model (Mandakini et al. 2020) is implemented as a user-defined function to define the material property during the CFD study of the mixture rheology inside hydrocyclone classifier. The multiphase and turbulence model is solved using the modified Algebraic Slip Model and Large Eddy Simulation model. A comparison of the predicted component performance curves is evaluated with and without the corrected viscosity model. The density and size effect on the particle phase distribution inside the classifier are compared, where the misplacements of the finer particles are carefully assessed. Validation of the component classification in hydrocyclone with the laboratory experiments found a close agreement with the rheology based CFD data. In this study, the effects of heat treatment on phase formation and surface morphology of the Cr-Pt coated system are investigated using X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy techniques. The CrPt andCr4Pt (Cr3Pt - A15 type) phases were formed after heat treatment of the coated samples. Heat treating at 1000°C renders a distinct island coating morphology that is non-continuous in nature. A diffusional model is proposed for this coated system with regards to the surface morphology formation after heat treatment.

The kinetics of cyanide loss were found to be first order under any given set of conditions, allowing rate constants to be easily determined. At room temperature and in the absence of activated carbon, some cyanide is lost by hydrolysis to hydrogen cyanide, but this does not occur to any significant extent at pH values higher than about 10. A higher rate of hydrolysis occurs when air agitation is used. When activated carbon is present, an additional carbon-catalysed oxidation reaction is responsible for a fairly high loss of cyanide. The evidence indicates a reaction mechanism that consumes oxygen and produces cyanate ion. Some of the cyanate thus produced decomposes to form a mixture of ammonia, carbonate, and urea, depending on the solution conditions. Additional cyanide is lost as a result of the adsorption of sodium cyanide by the activated carbon. At high temperatures, an additional hydrolysis reaction, which involves the formation of ammonium formate as an intermediate, occurs an/j is responsible for. a high loss of cyanide, leading ultimately to the formation of ammonia, hydrogen, and carbon dioxide. The presence of activated carbon has no effect on the rate of this reaction.

Oxygen enrichment of the converter air at Rustenburg Platinum Mines by J. E. FORBES (Associate Member)* An account is given of the adoption of oxygen enrichment to accelerate converting operations and so permit the handling of larger quantities of feed materials. In addition to achieving its object, the use of oxygen-enriched air (6 per cent oxygen by volume) results in an increase in the concentration of sulphur dioxide in the converter off-gas. The slags have the same composition as those produced without oxygen enrichment, and the operation of the converters is easily controlled.

A system of artificial support for shallow mines is described, analysed, and evaluated. The system can be designed rationally to support a predetermined overburden load, and tests have shown that the design theory gives accurate predictions of strength. The support system, consisting as it does of two basic materials, reinforced granular material and reinforced cemented material, is flexible and can be varied to suit changing requirements of height and load. The system of preloading to the design load by jacking off the roof ensures that the walls are both stiff and prooftested.

Fugitive dust from mineral extraction and processing activities can significantly influence air quality, the environment, and the health and quality of life of workers and surrounding communities. Poor engagement and communication between experts and lay persons, disciplinary silos and polarised viewpoints have made it difficult to develop a holistic understanding of the complex health issues associated with environmental emissions of mine dusts, and consequently to design meaningful and integrated approaches to address such issues. The collaborative Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) Mine Dust and Health Network, hosted by Minerals to Metals at the University of Cape Town, serves as a collaborative think-tank to inform research directions within and across disciplines, government policy and regulations, health monitoring programmes at public clinics, industry best practice, community healthcare and impact prevention programmes. It focuses initially on the southern African region, but with the intention to expand to mining-intensive developing countries within the rest of Africa, South America and Asia. This paper outlines the approach and activities of this global transdisciplinary and intersectoral network and presents some of the key outputs and achievements to date. Kaolin is one of the most important ingredients in porcelain manufacturing. Its main phase is clay mineral containing aluminum hydrosilicate, namely kaolinite. Beside kaolinite it also contains quartz, illite and feldspars, which impair its applicability. Kaolin is a non-reactive material, but metakaolin can be produced by heat treatment (calcination) of kaolin, which is also used by the cement and concrete industry due to its latent hydraulic (pozzolanic) properties. Beside thermal activation, reactive materials can also be produced by mechanochemical activation in general. This paper deals with the mechanochemical activation of kaolin. The raw material was classified into various size fractions, then ground in a batch stirred media mill under varying circumstances (residence time, circumferential velocity). After grinding, the structural changes of the products were investigated by X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). In addition, the particle size distribution of the ground material was determined by laser scattering. As a result of the grinding experiments and analytical measurements of the products, it can be clearly seen that reactivity of kaolin can be improved significantly by mechanical activation in a stirred media mill, but due to its high energy density the circumstances were optimised carefully to avoid aggregation. The objective of this study is to improve the shrinking core model for particles with a particle size distribution and clarify the activation mechanism of rare earth elements dissolution by mechanochemical activation. To achieve this objective, the method, called the doubly integrated micromodel, was applied for a shrinking core model in this study. This method consists of integrating the batch leaching rate of a single particle over the distribution of both feed particle size and reactor residence time to arrive at the fraction unleached. The usefulness of the shrinking core model improved by doubly integrated micromodel was confirmed by comparing it with a shrinking core model. To apply the shrinking core model improved by doubly integrated micromodel to rare earth elements dissolution from weathered residual rare earth ores by mechanochemical activation, leaching experiments were performed for grinding samples by planetary ball milling. The reaction equation of mechanochemical reaction by planetary ball milling for weathered residual rare earth ores was investigated by x-ray absorption fine structure analysis. As a result of a kinetics study, the rate-determining process of leaching changed from reaction to diffusion reaction control by planetary ball milling. Based on these results, it was revealed that the main mechanism of activated rare earth elements dissolution from weathered residual rare earth ores was a mechanochemical reaction by planetary ball milling. Your Council, however, is aware that there are still people in our mining and metallurgical industries, who could qualify for membership, but who have not yet joined the Institute. A drive to increase membership was accordingly organised, and members of Council were given the responsibility for campaigning in sections of industry, and for publicising the objectives and advantages of belonging to the Institute. Up to now there has not been much reaction to this campaign, but I hope we will see results in the coming year. At the same time, Council has recognised the need for change in the conduct of the Institute's affairs in order to meet the changing needs of our membership. Our members, both mining and metallurgical, are in the first place, geographically more widely dispersed than they used to be, and secondly, with the growth of the metallurgical industry, their technical interests are now more diversified. The Institute must cope with these changing needs if we are to continue to perform a useful function. The

The peak in Sulphur price late 2008 caused again intensified investigation into the decomposition of sulphates and spend acid. One option is the recycling of sulphur from spend acid, which already started more than 40 years ago in the field of spend acid from organic processes in refineries and acrylic glass manufacturing. Since this acid couldn't be neutralized and discarded due to high organic contents, another source of SO2 to produce sulfuric acid is the decomposition of metal sulfates. The decomposition of metal sulfates was investigated at the next peak in Sulphur price in the 80?s. The first major scale pilot tests and studies of gypsum decomposition were carried out for clients in Florida. The decomposition of gypsum was quite often mainly influenced by the strategic decision of some countries to get own and independent acid production. In other cases the industry doesn?t have enough space to dump the gypsum. Therefore the company was also forced to convert the gypsum into ?saleable? products to avoid these residues. Other projects were made for the recycling of iron-sulfates from the pigment industry. The motivations for these projects were not only given by acid price. For the German pigment industry it was no longer permitted in the 80?s to dump the iron sulphate residues into the sea. These regulations forced the industry to develop new technology, which allows converting of the FeSO4-residues into iron oxide and acid. Therefore economical and mainly environmental factors influenced the decision of the companies to develop and to build these plants. Beside the above mention iron- and calcium-sulphates many other process exist, which produce metal sulphates as an intermediate product. These cases are not forced by environmental or strategic factors. In cases like Ni, Co or Mn-decomposition the main product of the plant is treated in the decomposition plant and later on used as ferrous-alloys. These final products are higher in price compared to e.g. CaO, which exclude the high-energy consumption for the endothermic chemical decomposition reaction. The reaction of SO2 generation based on acid or sulfate decomposition takes place in the range of 1000°C. The energy demand of the endothermic reaction is considerable and leads due to the high fuel-combustion off-gas stream to a diluted SO2 gas. Energy prices are usually increasing at the same time like sulphur. Sulphuric Acid based on decomposition is therefore more expensive than as acid based on sulphur combustion. The paper describes fluid bed technology and possible process concepts for decomposition plants. Additionally the thermodynamic background of the decomposition process and the main influence factors are provided to receive a better understanding of this technology.

The reaction of SO2 generation based on acid or sulfate decomposition takes place in the range of 1000°C. The energy demand of the endothermic reaction is considerable and leads due to the high fuel-combustion off-gas stream to a diluted SO2 gas. Energy prices are usually increasing at the same time like sulphur. Sulphuric Acid based on decomposition is therefore more expensive than as acid based on sulphur combustion. The paper describes fluid bed technology and possible process concepts for decomposition plants. Additionally the thermodynamic background of the decomposition process and the main influence factors are provided to receive a better understanding of this technology.

"In coal mining in China, the cutting height of the shearer in longwall faces is increasing. Owing to the increase of extraction height, the caved roof strata area is enlarged, and new issues are being encountered, such as determination of a suitable working resistance for the shield and control of the roof. Through field observation and theoretical analysis of the first longwall face with a height of 6.0 m in the Bayangaole mine, a three-stage structural model was developed. Stage I is defined as the period in which the lower immediate roof (LIR) caves into the goaf and is broken into irregular shapes of various sizes. Stage II is defined as the period in which the upper immediate roof (UIR) breaks and impacts the LIR. In stage III, the main roof breaks into blocks and then impacts the UIR. With respect to these three stages, a suitable method was identified for calculating the working resistance of the shield support for a super-great mining height longwall face (SGMHLW). Introduction and backgroundThe coal seams in the Shendong coalfield, located in the northwest of China, are characterized by low dips and large thicknesses and are thus suited for full thickness extraction. Since the mid-1990s, the Shendong coalfield has been developed into one of the largest in the world (Ning, Liu, and Tan. 2014; Ning et al., 2017). Recent developments in mining equipment have made it possible extract entire seams up to 5.0 m thick in a single cut. This method, termed the ‘super-great mining height longwall face’ (SGMHLW) method, has been widely adopted in the Shendong coalfield (Table I) (Ju and Xu, 2013; Peng, Li, and Zhou 2015; Zhang, Fan, and Ma 2011). According to some studies, sudden support-closure incidents often occur when using the SGMHLW method. The key to solving this engineering issue is to have a clear understanding of the structural characteristics and movement laws of the overlying strata. For instance, the load on the supports is related to the movement of the roof stratum as a response to the mining activities."

n order to validate the borehole analysis valuation procedure commonly used in the South African gold mining industry, a simulated orebody was used to create borehole values which would serve as data for the procedure. After confirming the distribution, calculating the variance size of area relationship, estimating the block variance, and calculating a profit measurement for each set, comparisons were made to the known population parameters. Results show only one overall bias (in the estimation of the lognormal third parameter), which is carried throughout the analysis. The remainder of the analysis is unbiased, validating the procedure.

Applying non-explosive expansion material (NEEM) is one of the safest methods for rock fracturing, especially in a hard rock quarry. An experimental study was conducted to determine the pressure exerted by NEEM in a hole, which is necessary for analysing rock fracturing, particularly in a numerical modelling. Stress distribution was developed in a thick-wall cylinder in order to measure the tangential strain on the external boundary. In the experiments, nine pipes of different materials and varying diameters were selected and then loaded internally with a general type of NEEM. Through electrical strain gauges, the tangential strains were recorded on the external boundary of the pipes. The results obtained from these tests and existing data from previous researchers were utilized for the statistical analysis. A new experimentally-derived formula is proposed for determining the pressure exerted by NEEM by multiple parameter regression with a high correlation coefficient. The proposed model has a nonlinear form with three independent parameters i.e. the hole diameter, the time, and the modulus of elasticity of the material.
