This study examined an alternative technique of extracting tungsten from wolframite ore using a fusion method with ammonium phosphate salt. Current techniques use alkali salts to decompose tungsten ores and use various purification methods to produce ammonium paratungstate, which is a key intermediate precursor in the extraction of tungsten. In this study, a two-step extraction process, which involves thermal decomposition of the ore using fusion and a separation stage, is examined. The novelty of this technique is the ability to completely decompose wolframite ore and form an unstable tungsten oxide phosphate (WO2(PO3)2) compound. The instability of WO2(PO3)2 in deionized water enables selective isolation of tungsten as insoluble precipitates of WO3 and WO2. The decomposition reaction of WO2(PO3)2 is influenced by the presence of oxygen and determined to be first order under ambient conditions. Scanning electron micrographs and X-ray diffraction analysis showed above 80% of the tungsten precipitated compared with the amount that remained in the filtrate solution.

Tribo-electrostatic separation is a promising method for effectively utiliing low-grade magnesite resources by removing quartz and improving the grade of magnesite. To determine the chargeto- mass ratios of pure magnesite and quartz, a triboelectric measurement system was employed, and a laboratory tribo-electrostatic separation system was used to separate low-grade magnesite. The results showed that the maximum difference in charge-to-mass ratio between pure magnesite and quartz particles was observed after friction with polyvinyl chloride. The grade and recovery of magnesite increased with temperature and initially increased with increasing voltage, feed rate, and air flowrate before gradually decreasing. The optimal conditions resulted in a concentrate with 46.91% MgO content and 77.36% recovery, while the quartz content decreased from 7.02% to 1.95%. These experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness and potential of tribo-electrostatic separation in removing quartz and upgrading magnesite.

Spiral separators have been widely accepted as one of the most flexible gravity separation devices for several decades. The International Journal of Mineral Processing, 84, pp. 118 – 132 mentioned that spirals are for treating material too coarse for flotation and too fine for dense-media separation. Powder Technology V 102, pp 244 – 252, 1999 stated that there exists a genuine need for extending the performance envelope of spirals – whether to treat finer or coarser material than the traditional size ranges. In recent times there has been an upsurge in interest, particularly in the development of newer fine gravity separators. Spiral separators for the recovery of ultra-fine particles have a unique profile, pitch and features to ensure efficient performance. The flow on the spiral trough must be controlled to minimise turbulence that will entrain fine particles in the outer section of the trough. The experimental test work showed a movement of mass from the outer region towards the centre column of the spiral, i.e., from the fine tailings band towards the concentrate. As recovery on the spiral trough is a function of mass yield and grade, the ultra-fine 7 spiral had a better recovery than the HX5. This makes the UF7 an ideal rougher spiral. In the second of a series of five colloquia with the theme Rescue 91 ..Survival Initiatives for the Mining Industry, the emphasis was placed on the harnessing of improved technology for the benefit of all the industry. The Colloquium was held at Mintek, Randburg, and attracted some 150 delegates and speakers from a cross-section of the industry. Eight papers were presented, and panel discussions were held to round off the morning and afternoon sessions. The purpose of the Colloquium was to allow mines and other groups to put forward innovative schemes in the management of technology that could be shared by everyone in their determination to ensure the survival of the gold-mining industry in the current difficult times. A range of supported gold catalysts was prepared by ion exchange, varying many of the preparation variables, including concentration in the precursor solution, washing procedure, as well as drying and calcination procedures. These catalysts have been characterized extensively. TEM images show essentially the same crystallite size distributions, between 2?5 nm, for almost all catalysts, the only exception being catalysts not washed in ammonia, which did not show any small crystallites. Additional characterization with SEM yielded an interesting discovery. Catalysts that appear identical on the TEM also contain some large crystallites in the range of 50?500 nm. Differences in dispersion due to the drying procedure not seen on the TEM can now be observed. Oxygen chemisorption is being investigated as an additional method to characterize gold based catalysts to complement the typically used electron microscope techniques.

South Africa accounts for the largest global manganese ore production share, primarily from its Kalahari Manganese Field deposit. Despite this, domestic smelting is beset by energy constraints, resulting in most ore being exported for smelting. Mintek is investigating energyefficient pathways for ore reduction, specifically undertaking prereduction tests to reduce energy consumption for manganese smelting. The present contribution considers the effect of methane, anthracite, and holding time, at a fixed temperature, on the extent of reduction of Mamatwan-type ore, primarily from a mineralogical perspective. In particular, the aim was to carburise the monoxide Mn phase to Mn carbide, as this is less energy intensive than producing metallic Mn from the monoxide. Based on thermogravimetric test results, the ore and products from three experiment sets were analysed using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy to assess the phases and textures present. The findings show that carburisation of manganese monoxide and its equivalents is most advanced under conditions of 8% anthracite, 10% methane, and 60 minutes of holding time, thus confirming with the thermogravimetric data. These results show promise for reducing energy consumption for Mn smelting in ferromanganese production.

The BGRIMM process mineralogy analyser (BPMA) is a new automated mineralogy software platform developed in China. This system consists of the BPMA software platform, controlling a combination of commercially available scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive Xray spectrometry (EDS). The BPMA software controls SEM and EDS through their application programming interfaces, to form an auto-SEM and EDS system that automatically acquires BSE images and X-ray spectra, respectively, and classifies minerals by spectrum-matching. After automated measurement and mineral identification, various quantitative process mineralogical data (e.g., mineral composition, mineral abundance, mineral liberation and intergrowth relationships, mineral associations, particle and grain sizes, particle density distributions, calculated assay, elemental deportments, mineral grade recovery and elemental grade recovery, etc.) would be calculated quickly, accurately and automatically. The BPMA could be used for ore characterisation as a new advanced automated mineralogy technology. The use of dual-energy X-ray transmission (DE-XRT) technology in the mining industry has been developing rapidly in the past decade. In many projects, DE-XRT images are analysed to classify ore and waste in sulphide deposits where the sulphides and non-sulphides have distinct characteristics in density. In the current practice of DE-XRT image processing, every pixel in the image gets classified into two categories, depending on the intensity of the pixel from both low and high energy X-ray response. If the pixel’s intensity is above the threshold curve generated in the high-energy and lowenergy scatter plot, it is classified as “higher density” material, and the remaining pixels are classified as “lower density” material. This paper elaborates on an alternative approach to DE-XRT image processing for in-depth characterisation of samples from a lead-zinc sulphide deposit. The detailed characterisation is achieved by providing density distribution of individual rock using DE-XRT laboratory sorting unit (COMEX) located at the University of British Columbia. Instead of classifying the X-ray images into two different classes from one threshold curve, multiple density classes are created between two threshold curves to generate the density distribution. By manipulating the two threshold curves, we can analyse images of samples obtained at different resolutions of density distribution. If the two threshold curves become infinitely close to each other, it will create a single-threshold scenario similar to the current methods being used in the industry. This method provides the ability to change the threshold curves, hence providing more flexibility on material characterisation based on the needs of the operation. Furthermore, the DE-XRT images from individual rock specimens are compared to the test results from hand-held X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analyser as well as assays of various elements for the same set of samples. The data analysis will provide information regarding ore characteristics and also the theoretical performance of the sensor-based sorting. Tailings produced from the iron ore industry present many challenges due to the high economic and environmental impacts involved with their disposal. However, the relative scarcity of high-grade iron ores has driven manufacturers to recover and recycle these valuable tailings (secondary sources). This study aimed at the purification of ultrafine tailings with high sulphur content from an iron ore concentrator via reverse flotation to produce pellet feed fines. A specially designed flotation column featured with a nano bubble generator and a conventional bubble generator were employed to assess the effects of nano bubbles on the desulfurisation performance of iron ore concentrate under different operating conditions. Results obtained from this study indicated that the sulphur content of iron concentrate could be reduced from 1.2% to 0.22% in the presence of nano bubbles. Also, the results showed that use of nano-micro bubbles increased sulphur recovery 20% more, in comparison to micro bubbles. The flotation performance of 2-(benzylthio)-acetohydroxamic acid (BTHA) to diaspore was first evaluated by micro-flotation tests. The adsorption mechanism was further investigated through adsorption experiments, molecular dynamics simulation, zeta potential and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results demonstrated that BTHA had a stronger ability to collect diaspore in comparison with another diaspore collector, benzohydroxamic acid (BHA), especially under the condition of weak alkalinity, the flotation recovery can reach 90%. The more negative interaction energy (ΔE) between BTHA and diaspore from molecular dynamics simulation results revealed that BTHA had an easier adsorption ablity onto diaspore than BHA, which matched with adsorption results. "Pressure leaching is an option for copper recovery from chalcopyrite. Leaching takes place at high temperatures and pressures in the presence of an oxidizing agent. This work shows how the performance of pressure leaching circuits may be improved by optimizing the configuration of autoclaves and the heat removal method. The objective was achieved by creating an autoclave model that combines mass balances, energy balances, and population balances. A base case circuit consisting of a single autoclave was chosen, and this base case was compared with options for increasing capacity by adding more autoclaves to the circuit. These capacity increase options include circuits in which the additional autoclave is added in parallel, in series, and in series with thickening between the two autoclaves. The copper extraction, productivity, and cooling requirements for these options are compared. The series circuit with interstage thickening has the highest extraction and productivity; however, the cooling duty in the first autoclave is high. In addition to comparing circuit options, three options for heat removal were investigated: cooling coils, quench water, and flash recycling. The flash recycle option results in the highest copper extraction, and the quench water option the lowest copper extraction. IntroductionBackgroundCopper sulphide ores and concentrates containing chalcopyrite are typically hard to leach under atmospheric conditions. Smelting of these ores may also be a challenge, due to the inability of smelting processes to handle low-grade ores, as well as impurities such as arsenic and antimony. Alternative hydrometallurgical routes to treating chalcopyrite are therefore required. One option is pressure leaching, which is the focus of this work.In the pressure leaching process, sulphide ores and concentrates are leached in autoclaves at temperatures of 200 to 220°C and a pressure of about 3000 kPa (Schlesinger et al., 2011). An oxidizing agent, usually oxygen, is required to oxidize sulphide ions to sulphate ions. The oxidation of sulphur to sulphate is exothermic; consequently, a method of heat removal is necessary in order to maintain the temperature in the autoclave."

It is not uncommon for gold slurry ponds or screen oversize dumps to contain several different types of carbon-rich contaminants. These contaminants act as robbers of dissolved gold which has a detrimental effect during the downstream carbon-in-leach (CIL) or carbon-in-pulp (CIP) processes. With a renewed interest in the reprocessing of contaminated gold waste ponds and dumps, preconcentration of the feed to either the CIL or CIP process becomes important to maximise profits from these resources. An added advantage in removing these resources, which were once thought of as being uneconomical, is the availability of land that can further be rehabilitated for community development projects. For gravity separation, an example of suitable technology is the Reflux Classifier (RC), which can be used for the separation of materials of different densities and can be used as a pre-concentration step. In this project, a laboratory-scale Reflux Classifier was used to pre-concentrate a gold-bearing sample obtained from a waste dump situated to the east of Johannesburg, South Africa. The material had an average gold grade of 1.9 g/ton and a carbon content of 10%. This material was first fed to a semi-batch Reflux Classifier that was used to fractionate it into several different density intervals by varying the fluidisation water feed rate, followed by continuous runs at fixed water flow rates. The results showed that a cumulative gold recovery of 60%, carbon recovery of 85%, and mass pull of 41% was possible for a fluidisation water feed rate of 15 L/min, while a rate of 20 L/min resulted in a gold recovery, carbon recovery and mass pull of 83%, 92% and 79% respectively, which translated into a concentrate gold grade above the set target of 3 g/ton. Continuous operation at 20 L/min yielded an underflow stream with 84% gold recovery at a grade of 5.4 g/ton. Keywords: Reflux Classification, gold recovery

The copper tankhouse at Rustenburg Base Metals Refinery is an essential component of the Anglo American Platinum value chain. The tankhouse uses starter-sheet technology that was adopted in the 1980s, so dependence on manually intensive labour and overall operational excellence has a significant impact on process performance. An efficient, stable, and sustainable electrowinning process contributes to minimising energy consumption and reducing operational costs, and enables improved product quality and increased throughput. Historic performance of this tankhouse has often been suboptimum over prolonged periods. An in-depth operational review of performance from 2018–2024 was carried out to understand challenges, risks, and high-impact factors that contribute to poor performance. Implementation of adherence to fundamental operational basics identified from global best practice, such as the frequency and quality of cell cleaning and maintenance, preventing backlogged harvesting or maintenance, preserving cell-top furniture conditions and integrity of electrodes, preventing short circuits and poor current distribution, and maintaining a high level of operational discipline, has since contributed to an era of exceptional performance. Root-cause analysis fault trees pertaining to poor current efficiency and high scrap rate are summarised. Current efficiency has significantly improved since 2021, now consistently exceeding 88%. The copper scrap rate, previously believed to be limited to a minimum of 4%, achieved a historic monthly low record of 2.06% in 2023. Chemical and physical quality has considerably improved, and cathodes exhibit minimal morphological defects.

Some years ago, Ferroatlantica developed a new type of electrode known as the ELSA electrode. In this electrode there is a central graphite core that provides support, surrounded by an annulus of Søderberg paste that gets baked during operation. This technology has been implemented on several silicon furnaces around the world, and was reported on during the previous Infacon conference. In all electrodes, but particularly in the ELSA electrode, the quality and consistency of the paste are important for correct operation. As the type of paste varies between customers and between countries, Ferroatlantica has developed a quality control procedure for their customers of this technology. This procedure is geared to the point of view of the customer rather than the paste producer. The analysis is based on the desired flow pattern of the raw paste and on the desired mechanical and electrical properties of the baked paste, as experience has shown that these are the most important parameters to monitor in order to avoid having problems with the resulting electrodes. This paper discusses these methods of paste analysis in the light of complementary studies that have been done when there has been an electrode breakage in the different plants.

As part of an investigation of possible water-saving measures at Anglo American Platinum's Mogalakwena Mine in Limpopo, South Africa, a study was made of conditions on the wet beaches of two adjacent tailings dams, each serving a separate plant on the mine. For one of the dams, a special catamaran was designed and constructed to enable the full length of wet beaches to be accessed and sampled immediately after a layer of tailings had been deposited. For the other dam, the wet beach was accessed using conveyor belting and scaffold planks. The length of the beaches was 400 m on the first dam, and 200 m on the second, and each was sampled at 50 m intervals. The parameters reported in this paper, for both beaches, are: > Water content profiles along each beach from the surface to as deep as 2.5 m, at times ranging from 12 hours to 6 weeks from the end of deposition > Particle size distributions at the surface, down the full length of the beaches > Measurements of feed relative density, tonnage and volume, decant and drain flow volumes, as well as rainfall and evaporation for both dams. The surface water contents shortly after deposition have been used to establish the relative density of the settled, decanted tailings and its variation down the beach. This data, combined with the decant and drainage flows, is used to establish the calculated and actual water recoveries from both dams.

Ti-64, which accounts for more than 50% of the worldwide titanium tonnage, has found commercial importance in industries requiring components with high specific strength and resistance to corrosion. Investment casting is the preferred production method due to the difficult machinability of the alloy. This study was aimed at investigating the mechanism and the extent of alpha case formation on Ti-64 components cast using the investment casting method with YFSZ (yttria fully-stabilized zirconia) shell moulds after vacuum induction melting. The extent of the reaction between the mould hot face and the molten metal has been studied by varying parameters such as soaking temperature and mould hot face composition, and examining their effects on the reaction with the mould. An increase in the soaking temperature had an effect on the alpha case, both in appearance and hardness, but had no effect on contamination levels by carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen. The depth of alpha case increased with soaking temperature, increasing from 35 µm to 161 µm with an increase in temperature from 1200°C to 1400°C. The micro-hardness profiles provided insight into the effect of the alpha case on the mechanical properties of the Ti-64 alloy by displaying hardness values of 1000 HV0.1 and above, but could not be solely utilized to determine the alpha case penetration depth due to microstructural differences in the unaffected Ti-64, in particular the martensitic microstructure that formed with a fast cooling rate from a higher temperature. Levels of expected contaminants such as Zr, Y, 0, and C were low. The addition of the colloidal zirconia binder affected the interfacial reactions. YFSZ proved to be a thermodynamically stable refractory material, with the alpha case possibly forming as a result of segregation.

One of the earliest records of metal recovery by solution leaching is described by Agricola as 'juice of rock' in the 1550s. In these early years of hydrometallurgy and civil engineering, few controls and systems were employed to enhance recovery and protect the environment. Since that time, leaching (dump or heap) operations have made significant strides in increasing metal and solution recovery while protecting the environment, all goals of a sustainable operation. It is now recognized that the design and operation of modern heap leach facilities requires contributions from many fields of study, including hydrometallurgy, civil engineering, geotechnical engineering, unsaturated-flow hydrology, mine planning, geosynthetics engineering, geochemistry, process engineering, mechanical engineering, and electrical engineering. While advancements in these fields have resulted in more sustainable heap leach operations, challenges in the industry still exist. A number of heap leach operations exhibit poor or lower-than-predicted metal recovery, loss of solution flow and control within the ore heap, loss of ore heap stability under leach, failure of liner and/or solution recovery systems, and overtopping of process water ponds. A number of these issues may be the result of several compounding conditions. For example, poor metal recovery may be due to an inadequate scale-up assumption (scaling laboratory tests to field-size heaps), lack of control of the in-heap geochemical environment, changes in ore mineralogy from the original design, changes in mechanical and hydraulic properties of the ore from the original design, ore handling and pre-treatment, inadequate solution management system, and inadequate solution application. The purpose of this paper is to present and discuss issues that may affect the sustainability of a heap leach operation. Since sustainability encompasses a broad range of topics and issues, the focus of this paper will be on issues affecting metal and solution recovery, solution flow and containment, and stability of the ore heap.

This paper outlines an investigation into the recovery of saleable fractions of coal from ?as-arising? South Export Plant effluent streams, using Baleen microscreening technology. South Export Plant, a subdivision of BHP Billiton Energy Coal SA (BECSA) Coal Processing, is a two-module plant treating 2000 t/h. The nominally -150 µm coal is untreated and is therefore passed from classifying cyclones to the thickeners for process water recovery. The thickened underflow is pumped into a series of slurry cells for further settling and recovery of supernatant water. The marginal quality, moisture content, and handlebility of this settled material renders it unsuitable for inclusion into saleable products and it is thus stockpiled and trucked to designated pits for disposal. Over the years, stockpiling and trucking has become an overly expensive exercise. In an effort to recover some of this cost, a task team was assigned to investigate less costly options to process slurry across BECSA plants. Various technologies such as froth flotation, sieve bends, and Reflux Classifier were considered, although the results were generally not beneficial ? this could be attributed to weathered/oxidized coal. A decision was made to pursue an alternative approach by testing the suitability of the new ?Baleen Filter?. The concept is to screen out the higher-grade fraction (+50 µm) as saleable product and reject the finer fractions to the slurry ponds. The Baleen Filter was found to effectively screen at an acceptable efficiency between 94% and 99.99%, with a very sharp cut-point (d50 and Ep). The actual yields from the screening results were better than the predicted yields in terms of both mass and energy as predicted from feedstock analysis.
