To the members of The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy We have audited the annual financial statements set out on pages 251 to 257. These financial statements are the responsibility of the institute's Council. Our responsibility is to report on these financial statements. We have conducted our audit in accordance with generally accepted auditing standards. These standards require that we plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance that, in all material respects, fair presentation is achieved in the financial statements. The audit included an evaluation of the appropriateness of the accounting policies, an examination, on a test basis, of evidence that supports the amounts and disclosures included in the financial statements, an assessment of the reasonableness of significant estimates, and a consideration of the appropri¬ateness of the overall financial statement presentation. We consider that our auditing procedures were appropriate in the circumstances to enable us to express our opinion presented here. In our opinion these financial statements fairly present the financial position of the institute at 30th June, 1998, and the results of its operations for the year then ended in conformity with generally accepted accounting practice.

The Samarco pipeline, the longest in the world for iron ore slurry transportation, started operation in 1977 to transport concentrate from the Germano facilities, in the state of Minas Gerais, to the pelletizing plant, located 396 km away, in the state of Espirito Santo, on the south-east coast of Brazil. Designed for a nominal capacity of 12 million tons per year, the pipeline reached 15.5 million/year due to operational improvement and, in late 2005, it was resized to transport 16.5 million tons per year, with the installation of a booster station. In order to ensure the accurate performance of the system, a pipeline cleaning programme was carried out and, since it has been 29 years from the operation start-up, precise knowledge of the pipe condition would be fundamental to guarantee the success of the project. The cleaning programme demonstrated the potential of operational gains from this initiative, and its effect on the corrosion control and future measures, which should be permanently adopted to maintain the improved capacity. The intelligent pig runs provided essential data used to establish a pipeline integrity programme that allowed Samarco to develop a pipe repair plan based on the severity and significance of the features and to implement a future pipe replacement plan.

The ferrite-pearlite microstructure is the most popular microstructure for alloys used in structural applications, including railway wagon wheels. These alloys have been designed through alloying and thermo-mechanical processing to have a refined microstructure. Ferrite-pearlite alloys are low cost, weldable, have good fabricability, and are reliable under extreme conditions. Given these performance attributes, it seems unlikely then that their dominant position as structural steels would ever be challenged by alternative microstructures. One major achievement in the development of ferrite-pearlite steels has been in the refinement of their interlamellar spacing to very fine distances of the order of < 0.3 µm. A refined microstructure increases the hardness of the alloy, thus increasing its life under wear conditions. The interlamellar spacing in pearlitic steels has, however, been refined almost to its theoretical limit. The increasing demand for speed and increased axle loading on railway wagons requires the use of stronger, tougher, and more durable materials. This has opened the window for the development of novel bainitic steels. Bainitic alloys have a higher level of microstructural refinement than pearlitic ones. They have shown to have good wear resistance and rolling-contact fatigue resistance, and high toughness. This paper will discuss the progress to date on the development of bainitic railway wheel alloys. Four alloy chemistries have been chosen for possible further development.

The aqueous chemistry of niobium and tantalum compounds with hydrofluoric acid is a mature field of investigation. In contrast, very little attention has been paid to reactions of these compounds in non-aqueous environments. Similarly, reactions of elemental fluorine with niobium and tantalum compounds have received little more than cursory attention in literature. This work discusses the isothermal reaction kinetics derived from thermogravimetry, using a less redundant approach than is currently the standard. We also discuss the most likely kinetic models for this reaction.

Pressure leach autoclave circuits are employed in the leaching of ores, concentrates, mattes, alloys and intermediates for the recovery of metals into solution. Once the metals are extracted into solution, the value metals can be recovered by hydrometallurgical means such as by purification followed by electrowinning, hydrogen reduction, pyrohydrolysis, crystallization and other unit operations. In many of these integrated flowsheets the pressure leach step is pivotal to the recovery of the value metals from the host material. Furthermore, the autoclave circuit invariably is a high capital cost component of the plant and an area that is carefully scrutinized when debottlenecking and capacity increases are being considered. This paper identifies a unique proven way of increasing the capacity of existing or new exothermic pressure oxidative leach autoclave circuits by as much as two or three times.

Perceptions of disaster caused by burning fossil fuels have reached such a pitch that they seriously threaten the very future of the industry. Coal is a dirty word. A leader in Business Day(January 192009) claimed ?There is no disputing that renewable and non-polluting energy sources are preferable to the country?the true cost of so-called cheap coal-fired power stations is neither reflected nor accounted for by Eskom?the true and immediate but unacknowledged cost of continued coal mining is apparent in the catastrophic level of acidification from mining runoff of all significant natural water resources in the country?and their waters have been rendered unfit for human consumption. Air quality is in a similar state with?increases in pulmonary disease causing workforce absenteeism and compromised childhood development, among many other health problems recorded in areas polluted by coal mining.? The upshot is that our latest coal-fired power station, Kusile, is being required to use flue gas desulphurization. The costs are considerable, and the benefits minimal. Meanwhile, exports are being threatened by EU directives and an assumption that South African coal gives off excessive quantities of SOx and NOx when burned. The industry needs to arm itself with clear responses to these and similar misconceptions, and to communicate those responses loudly and clearly, if it is to survive.

The UCAR® CHILL-KOTE? freeze lining concept combines wall cooling with carbon and graphite refractories of higher thermal conductivities to ?chill? the refractory lining by transferring heat from the refractory lining. Effective sidewall water cooling, together with the efficiency of the heat dissipating conductive refractories, lowers the temperature of the lining to below that of the molten process materials. This causes a layer of slag and process metal to solidify or ?freeze? and form a protective ?skull? which completely coats the refractory hot face. Once formed, the slag skull insulates the refractories, reducing heat loss and protect the lining from erosion, chemical attack, thermal shock, and other stresses. The result: extended life and greatly improved refractory performance. The Ilmenite smelting process depends on the presence of a solidified slag skull to protect sidewall refractory material from chemical attach by molten slag. No known refractory material is able to withstand this corrosive material. To date, UCAR has not applied their Chill Kote ? technology in the ilmenite smelting industry. This paper revolves around the results obtained from conducting an ilmenite smelting campaign on a 500kW DC open-arc furnace with a UCAR designed refractory system. The purpose of this test was to establish the effects such a lining has on refractory wear and the reduction-smelting process. Proper thermo-couple management enabled the authors to monitor lining wear for the duration of the campaign. Prior to the pilot-scale campaign, modeling work was completed to evaluate the feasibility of applying UCAR® CHILL-KOTE? technology to ilmenite smelting furnaces. The successful operation of a pilot-scale furnace equipped with the UCAR® CHILL-KOTE? lining as well as concise modeling suggest that it should be a viable option to consider for an industrial-scale furnace.

The commissioning of a test facility for the calibration of anemometers by J. J. VAN RENSBURG (Student Member). After the erection of a commercially produced open-jet wind tunnel for the calibration of the anemometers used in mine ventilation, the wind tunnel was calibrated for routine use. There is a choice of five orifice plates. which, together with a variable-speed fan, can give a measurable range of air velocities in the test section from about 0,05 to 35 m/so The orifice plates were calibrated against a standard pitot tube, and it is now necessary only to measure the pressure drop across an orifice plate and to read off, from a set of graphs, the true outlet velocity in the test section. The paper describes the underlying theory and the test results.

"The probability of survival of coal pillars is a more rational indicator of stability than the safety factor. Over time, pillars undergo reduction in size by progressive scaling of the sidewalls. The probability of survival is therefore not constant but reduces over time. The rate of scaling can be quantified, and the reduction of the probability of survival as a function of time can therefore also be quantified. The paper describes the link between the factor of safety, probability of survival, and reduction of the probability of survival. Using the safety factor, probability of survival, and the time at which the probability of survival will reduce to 50% is proposed as a more rational method of evaluating pillar stability than the safety factor alone.IntroductionCoal pillar strength has long been the subject of research in South Africa and several other coal-producing countries. However, it began receiving serious attention only after the Coalbrook disaster in 1960. The most important outcomes of the initial investigations were the groundbreaking research by Salamon and Munro (1967) that resulted in the well-known power formula for pillar strength, and the work by Bieniawski (1969) that resulted in a linear formula for strength. The former approach was based on empirical back-analysis of failed and stable pillar cases, and the latter on in situ strength tests on large specimens.The Salamon and Munro (1967) formula has been widely used in South Africa and even adapted for application to hard rock pillars by researchers such as Hedley and Grant (1972).At the time of the initial work by Salamon and Munro, there were only 27 failed pillar cases suitable for analysis. It was not possible at the time to determine site- or seam-specific strength, and the result was a general formula for use in all seams in all mining districts. Since that time pillars have continued to fail and the database continued to grow – as of 2013, there were 85 cases in the database. Using the additional data, there have been a number of re-evaluations of the strength formula and it has also become possible to differentiate between the different mining seams and areas."

"Mineral Resource estimation (MRE) and classification are highly dependent on the confidence in the model of the orebody geometry, known as the geological model, within which the estimates are constrained. An understanding of the geology of a deposit is thus fundamental to the Mineral Resource evaluation process. The geological model is a function of the structural and depositional complexity of the geology captured by drilling information, which is limited in the early stages of a project. The information effect has a significant impact in terms of the interpretation of the geology as well as the estimation of grade continuity and the resultant risk associated with the Mineral Resource estimate and classification.Therefore, as new drilling information becomes available, it is necessary to update and refine the geological model to appropriately constrain the resource estimates. The grade information is also updated, including statistics and the spatial correlation characteristics. This refinement is based on geological interpretations derived from the drillhole information that becomes available throughout the life of the mine; orebody knowledge that comes from working experience of the deposit, as well as familiarity with the software package used for modelling, is also important.In updating, the potential to identify new resources in previously unknown areas may be realized. The opposite may also occur where previous interpretations of ore continuity are refuted. Both scenarios could result from a better understanding of the geology of the deposit and thus a more realistic MRE, which reduces geological risk. This paper describes how newly drilled advanced grade-control holes for a gold deposit in Mali were used to refine the 3D geological model for the deposit in an attempt to identify the potential for additional oxide ore using conventional geostatistical evaluation techniques."

Geometallurgy represents an integrated approach to mine planning and operation whereby the naturally occurring ore variability and its effects on all key downstream activities in the mine life cycle are considered. Process mineralogy is one of the key components of this integrated approach. This paper focuses on understanding some of the mineralogical variability across the Swartberg Cu-Pb-Zn sulfide ore in South Africa and its consequent effects on flotation performance. This process mineralogy project is motivated by the planned changeover and expansion of the Black Mountain Mines concentrator to process solely Swartberg ore compared to the run-of-mine blend currently being treated at the plant. Eight samples spanning the main lithological units of the ore body are described using quantitative mineral-textural data and bulk sulfide batch flotation performance to establish five process mineralogical or geometallurgical units comprising: quartz-pyroxmangite-magnetite, quartz-amphibolemagnetite, quartz-magnetite, garnet-magnetite-quartzite and mica-quartzite ores. Important mineralogical characteristics affecting Cu, Pb and Zn recovery, grade and selectivity specific to the different ore samples are discussed. Ultimately, the use of ore-specific process mineralogical and geometallurgical knowledge allows for better mine planning and plant optimisation. The effects of welding current, electrode force, and welding time in a resistance spot weld were studied to investigate the effectiveness of welded joints between a thin EN10130: DC04 material and a thicker 817M40 part, through analysis of the microstructural and mechanical properties. All welded specimens were subjected to tensile testing at room temperature (25°C) and sub-zero temperature (–46°C) to test the strength of the welded joints. No full button failure was observed at either room temperature or sub-zero temperature after optimization of the weldng parameters. The fusion zone was observed to consist mainly of martensitic phase, due to rapid quenching, while the HAZ was composed of clusters of martensite in a ferrite and bainite matrix. The base 817M40 metal remained fully ferritic after welding. The hardness was found to increase with increasing welding current. An increase in nugget size, indicating good fusion of the weld, was observed with an increase in the welding current.

South Africa holds approximately 70% of the world’s total chrome reserves. Chromium is an important raw material for the production of stainless steel and ferrochrome alloys. Over the years, China’s ferrochrome market has been dependent on chrome ore imports from South Africa. In 2018, China imported about 75% of its chrome ore from South Africa. With the low platinum price and the rising demand for stainless steel, a growing demand to evaluate new beneficiation technologies for fine chromite was identified. Gravity separation of fine chromite (<75 μm) is inefficient, due to the limitations of the technology to upgrade fine particle size distributions. Potential for the recovery of chromite, specifically fines (<75μm), lost to UG2 PGM flotation tails, but also from MG and LG6 spiral circuit tailings exist. Flotation of podiform chromite ores from India and Kazhkhstan is successful in generating saleable product grade, following acid or alkaline flotation routes. Application to South African stratiform chromite is being evaluated, with the emphasis on evaluating reagent type, optimising dosages and the effect of pH in optimising flotation performance. Flotation can unlock additional value from chromite tailings material. The effect of ore characteristics such as gangue mineralogy, particle size distribution and headgrade are reported. The performance in terms of product quality and yield are evaluated and compared. The impact of this paper will not only prolong life of mine and increase revenue but will also alleviate environmental burdens associated with tailings dams. This paper presents the second of a two part study on density stratification in a laboratory batch jig. The first study, reported elsewhere, investigated the effect of operating conditions on the stratification profile achieved at equilibrium. The study reported in this paper investigated their effect on the kinetics of density stratification under 18 different sets of operating conditions - five for binary systems with different particle densities; and 13 for a ternary system with different configurations of the jig cycle. Although the study was academic in nature (it involved simple systems of 8 mm glass beads) it has a number of practical implications. It found that the most influential operating variables affecting stratification kinetics are the amplitude of water displacement, the pulsion hold time, and, to a lesser extent, the pulsion time. It also found that reasonable rates of stratification can be expected in systems with density differences as low as 237 kg/m3 but below this the kinetics deteriorate significantly. The two studies together suggest that, within a broad range of operating conditions, the equilibrium stratification profile is independent of control variables and it is the control of stratification kinetics that has the primary influence on the quality of density separations in a jig. W. de Klerk, Minister of Mineral and Energy Affairs, announced the change of name at the official opening of the main entrance to Mintek&apos;s premises on 30th October, 1981. Awards for bravery Two men who disregarded the dangers of fiercely burning timber and falling rocks to douse an underground fire, using their hard hats to scoop water from a drain, received the Chamber of Mines Award for bravery at a ceremony held at West Driefontein Gold Mine near the end of October.

Low-grade, complex mineral deposits have resulted in the need for complicated large-throughput processing plants delivering increased productivity, reliability, and utilization, together with reducing operational costs. Complex mineralogy has resulted in complicated process flow sheets designed to recover minerals as efficiently as possible. In addition, the remote location of many minerals¬-processing plants, continuously rising energy costs, and fierce competition pose significant challenges to the modern mine, compounded by a global scarcity of qualified and experienced operational personnel. Over the last decade the Internet and automation technologies have undergone major advancements. Automation technologies, solutions, and concepts that existed, but were considered risky or unreliable prior to the year 2000, have now gained acceptance and matured. Furthermore, new technologies and different collaboration schemes have appeared, offering innovative solutions to the mining industry to address many of the challenges described. These advancements in reliable remote systems that access technology through the Internet provide significant opportunity to support mining operations, enhance process performance, provide engineering services, and proactively anticipate and execute maintenance services. This paper references a global survey of automation trends in the mining industry and the potential for an intelligent collaborative environment using automation technologies to exploit opportunities in operating the plant of the future, increasing effectiveness, and reducing operational costs. A variety of possibilities are described, including asset management solutions, remote access capabilities, performance monitoring solutions, advanced process control technologies, and the formation of an intelligent collaborative environment. A real example where this technology is used to support the operation and maintenance at a cement plant in Egypt is given to underpin the concepts described in this paper.

The minerals industry needs the support of al sections of the population if it is going to be able to supply the new materials required for future development. It will achieve this support only if its image is good. Perceived images of the minerals industry are examined in respect of history, technology, environment, safety, education, and economics. Concern is expressed about the low technological image of the industry and the declining number of students enrolling in minerals-related disciplines. It is concluded that it is the professionals, through institutes like The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, who must take the lead in improving the image of the minerals industry. The Presidential Address gives data to support this thesis; data that, is hoped, can be used in efforts to educate people about the minerals industry.

As a national facility, Mintek?s brief is to conduct high calibre research that allows the most effective utilization of South African resources. The research takes two different forms, with the efforts being directed at both high-risk endeavours that may lead to the development or adoption of new technologies or the reapplication of technologies to potential new operations. Starting in the 80s Mintek began developing a process to upgrade the UG2 ore and invested heavily in projects, equipment and people to service the industry. Some of the highlights of that work that has been conducted here include: ?Development of a milling and flotation process for UG2 ores ?Development of the ?Mintek Process? for maximizing PGM recovery for UG2 ores ?Conversion of the UG2 milling circuits to open circuit ?Development of a robust pilot plant facility for use in plant design studies ?Use of dense media as a waste rejection option ?Use of attritioners in flotation circuits. More recently, and with the future in mind, the following processes are being researched, some of which have already been commercially applied: ?Development of a flowsheet for Platreef ores ?Use of optical sorting technology for upgrading platinum ores ?Use of a mini-plant for reagent optimization studies. Each of the highlights listed above will be discussed in the paper.
