In last decade, along with its booming Chinese economy, China?s higher education has experienced rapid growth. In 2010, the number of various colleges totals more than 3500, with 2.2 million faculties registered. Currently there are almost 30 million students studying in the colleges, 3 times more than 10 years ago. Mineral Processing was initiated in 1949 as a sub-discipline of Mining Engineering, one of the 13 first level disciplines. Mineral Processing is now established in 34 Chinese colleges, recruiting 2600 undergraduate students, 540 postgraduate students and 100 PhD students every year. A further 9 institutes offer postgraduate education in this field. More than 3000 graduates majoring in Mineral Processing join the industry or institutions each year. The four-year undergraduate teaching and practical training in the colleges is designed to produce qualified mineral processing professionals. This includes courses in mathematics and natural science, fundamental engineering and basic and specialization courses. Recently, the ?Excellent Engineer Program? was launched to strengthen students? practical capabilities. This is a 3+1 teaching and training model; 3 years of theoretical course study plus 1 accumulated year of various practical studies, either inside or outside the college. As for graduate employment, mining-related major graduates have been in a good demand thanks to the intensive investment in mineral sector by Chinese companies. The shortage of experienced metallurgists generates a greater than 90% employment rate for Mineral Processing graduates. However, the biggest problem we are still facing is the gap between the quality of the graduates and the requirements of industry, as a result of occupation attraction, teaching systems, faculty quality, and so forth. Another problem is international orientation. Although nowadays Chinese-foreign cooperation in college education is popular, collaborative mineral related projects are far less common, leaving much room for improvement. Looking ahead to the next 10 years, we still have the right reasons to estimate continued prosperity in the minerals sector as well as mineral processing education in China. Chromium ore exploitation has commenced in 1948 in Albania and there are produced about 24.3 million tons up to the end of 2006. Last years the prices and need were increased notably. Main export of chromium ores and concentrates was accomplished respectively 114 500 ton and 13 000 ton in People Republic of China during 2006 year. Location, status, reserves and grade of chromium deposits of Albania are presented in the paper. Chromium ore enrichment is related with their composition and Cr2O3 content, as well as with market requests. Actually, high grade chromium ores with Cr2O3 content over 38% ~ 40% are directly exported or treated in metallurgy, but last time have been exported and chromium ores with 28% ~ 30% Cr2O3 content for the reason that dressing plants can not be operated for investment lack. High grade chromium ores have been treated in heavy media separation plant before 1990. It is presented flow sheet, figures and necessity to put in operation HMS plant in the paper. Actually, low grade chromium ores with content 16% ~ 20% Cr2O3 are not enriched for the lack of investments, but before 1990 they have been concentrated in dressing plants producing chromium concentrates grade 48% ~ 50% Cr2O3. In the paper are shown technological schemes and industrial figures during more than 20 years operation and possibilities to reconstruct these mineral processing plants. Only chromium mineral processing plant of Bulqiza is in operation using as raw material its old existing tailings. The flow sheet and figures show that are possibilities to increase recovery and grade of concentrate in the plant. Separation and concentration of slimes in suitable equipment gives visible improvement of Cr2O3 recovery. Several tests have been carried out with flotation and magnetic separation methods for enrichment of low grade chromium ores. Flow sheet and figures of mineral processing ores content olivine as gangue mineral are interesting, because combination of gravimetric with magnetic methods is necessary in this case. In the paper are presented the tests and good results of low chromium ore pre concentration. Metallurgical treatment of chromium ores to produce Ferro chrome, as well as technological process, figures, consume of electrical power and materials in Elbasani and Burreli furnaces are shown and necessary investments to treat in metallurgy all produced chromium ores in Albania are considered.

The Republic of Tajikistan has large mercury-antimony deposit. The Republic takes the second place in the countries of the CIS by having antimony recourses or the fourth place in the world. Recently, on the mine bottom horizons the resources of gold were found. Gold in the data ore is submitted as nanosize particles. Results of ores enrichment of bottom horizons of Djijikrut deposit are obtained by a method of flotation. The flow sheet includes the rougher flotation, two scavenging flotation and two cleaner flotation. As a result of enrichment of ore, the mercury-antimony concentrate with the contents of 51.5% of antimony and recovery 90.3% from ore with the content of mercury of 3.5% was received. The investigation of thallium, selenium, and tellurium distributions on products of enrichment was carried out. The most effective reagents are a mixture of oksafore and butyl xanthogenate. While applying this mixture of reagents it is possible to refuse of the use of activator - nitrate lead. The behavior of gold is in details investigated during enrichment. To collective flotation concentrate is extracted only 30% of gold. The basic quantity of gold concentrates in tailings of flotation and is not taken by existing traditional methods. The alternative innovative technology of gold extraction was created. Various methods of roasting of a collective mercury - antimony concentrate oxidizing and reducing are investigated. Vacuum distillation of concentrate allocation in serial sublimates mercury and antimony was designed. In the received calcine concentrates gold. At additional roasting of a calcine up to 900°? concentration of gold makes 30.6 g/t. The offered innovational technology in a complex allows to process ores and concentrates unique mercury-antimony?gold bearing raw material. Despite the successful industrial practice to recovery KCl by flotation, the adsorption state of collectors at KCl salt surfaces is still not fully understood. In this paper, the captive bubble contact angle measurements at KCl and NaCl crystal surfaces in their saturated solutions are reported. The influence of different collectors and their concentration are considered. The results show that both cationic and anionic collectors produce a hydrophobic state at the structure breaking KCl salt sur-face, with finite contact angle values of between 30o and 40o. In contrast, the contact angle at the structure making NaCl salt surface is zero at all collector concentrations, suggesting that no collec-tor adsorption occurs, a supposition that is supported by results from molecular dynamics simulation (MDS). Further, it appears that the presence of surface defects such as edges and corners promote the adsorption of collectors at the KCl surface, and that the flotation is achieved by bubble attachment at the edges/corners of KCl particles with the formation of aeroflocs.

The slag produced in metallurgical smelting processes contains considerable amount of valuable metals. The present work focuses on recovery of copper value by froth flotation from the copper smelter slag. The slag samples are subjected to detailed characterization including automated quantitative mineralogy using Mineral Liberation Analyzer (MLA). The MLA results indicate that a part of copper is present in sulphide form in fayalite (iron-silicate) matrix and very poorly liberated. SEM-EDX analyses also reveal that a certain part of the copper is present within the fayalite (Fe-Ca-Si) matrix, perhaps either as lattice impurity or very fine grain. The copper smelter slag is ground in wet mode in a ball mill, to particle size distribution suitable for flotation. Subsequently, the slurry undergoes froth-flotation in lab-scale Denver-type flotation cell. Various combinations of sodium iso-propyl xanthate (SIPX) and alkyl hydroxamate collectors are used along with pine oil as frother. A multiple collector dosage is required for effective flotation of non-sulphide copper phases associated fayalite and alkyl hydroxamate is identified as one of the effective collector for non-sulphide minerals. The copper recovery can be enhanced by 7-10% with a combination of collectors as compared to conventional sulphide flotation using only xanthate type collectors. The bleaching of edible oils, industrial oils, and some chemicals may be achieved using natural and acid-activated clays. These materials remove impurities and pigments from the oils. In this work, a bentonite clay from Turkey (Somas bentonite) was activated with different concentration of H2SO4 and HCl at 70~90°C and 5~8 hours. Under these conditions several cations were removed from natural bentonite (Al, Mg, and Fe) and DTA-TGA, FT-IR curves of the solids obtained after acid treatment were examined. Treatment time and acid concentration increased the degree of destruction of the bentonite structure which was determined by ICP. Activated samples were tested in order to verify their capacity to bleach soybean oil and compared to standard commercial bleaching clays. The experimental results indicate that treated samples with H2SO4 have the same efficient in bleaching crude soybean oil with the standards and treated sample with HCl is more efficient in bleaching than the commercial products.

The effect of the acid anion on chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) leaching has been examined, under care-fully controlled conditions, in a range of acids in stirred reactors and columns at pH 1. Solution speciation calculations were performed to determine possible rate controlling species. The relative leach rates of Cu from chalcopyrite can be explained quantitatively entirely on the basis of solution speciation without the need to invoke any rational relating to surface structure/speciation. The rate of Cu release is first order with respect to Fe3+ activity. The stirred batch reactor experiments at fixed pH 1, Eh of 750 mV (SHE) and 75? showed that chalcopyrite leach rates were rapid in both HClO4 and H2SO4 with 100 % Cu recovery after 73h and 97 h respectively. However, the leach rate in H2SO4 was slower as compared to the HClO4 leach due to a slower increase in the activity of Fe3+ due to the formation of FeSO4-. The presence of Cl- in the leaches (HCl and H2SO4 with NaCl added) led to a low activity of Fe3+, due to the high activity of FeCl2+, resulting in very low leach rates. For the column leach experiments dissolution of Fe and Cu from the pH 1 HCl eluted chalcopy-rite column with quartz proceeded at several times the rate of any other column (chalcopyrite with and without quartz and/or pyrite leached with H2SO4, HClO4, HCl). Three observations indicate that galvanic interactions are not leach rate controlling role: a) The rate of leaching was not uniformly increased for the non-quartz containing columns where the two sulfide minerals, chalcopyrite and pyrite, are in physical contact as compared to the analogous quartz containing columns where they are not; b) there exists a reasonable correlation between the rate of Cu release and the effluent Fe3+ activity for all columns thus indicating that the leach rate is determined by solution speciation; and c) in all cases the proportion of Fe to Cu leached indicates preferential dissolution of Cu over Fe. However, the proportion of Fe to Cu is either the same or greater than expected on the basis of the single mineral columns. This indicates that chalcopyrite is not dissolving preferentially to pyrite.

Over the last twenty years CETEM has been involved in the preparation and certification of reference material from ores, concentrates and related materials for use in analytical laboratories associated with mining, metallurgy and earth sciences. CETEM provides reference materials from mineral samples, not available from the existing sources, to meet the needs of the mining and mineral industry. CBPA-1 and CBPA-2 respectively are samples of copper sulphide ore and flotation concentrate, both originated from Sossego Mine, located in Pará State, Brazil. The batch characterization was carried out by a collaborative measurement program with participation of 20 industrial, commercial and government laboratories from South America, North America, Europe, Asia and Africa. The certificates and report were issued in December 2007 (http://www.cetem.gov.br/ mrc/ing). The objective of this paper was to describe the procedures for material preparation and the collaborative approach involving a collaborative interlaboratory measurement program to certify CBPA-1 and CBPA-2.

In this study, it was aimed to produce glass sand with less than 0.15% Fe2O3 for window glass manufacture and glass ware grade with less than 0.05% Fe2O3 from Yalõköy sand dunes having 0.48% Fe2O3. In order to reduce the iron content of the Yalõköy sand dune, magnetic separation, flotation, scrubbing, H2SO4 leaching and drying were used. The optimum iron removal was achieved by H2SO4 baking at 150oC and 8 kg/t acid consumption. In this way, sand concentrate was obtained with 0.04% Fe2O3 and sand recovery 95%.

The main chemical constituents of waste cooking oil are higher fatty acid glycerides, which can be used to produce anionic fatty acids for most non-sulfide flotation. However, using the mixed fatty acids (MFA) produced by waste cooking oil as collectors directly, the flotation effect is usually not satisfactory, especially at lower temperature or room temperature. There are very rare systematic studies about the reason for poor flotation performance of waste cooking oil. This study aims to investigate the flotation and adsorption characteristic of different types of fatty acids in waste cooking oil to find out what kind of fatty acids results in the poor flotation performance. This will provide technical supports and theoretical guidance for the waste cooking oil application in the field of mineral processing. In this study, MFA were produced from the waste cooking oil, and then separated into saturated fatty acids (SFA) as well as unsaturated fatty acids (UFA), which possessing different flotation properties. The properties of the MFA, SFA and UFA were analyzed by iodine value, melting point measurement, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and quartz micro-flotation tests. The results showed that UFA was composed of fatty acids containing group—(CH=CH—CH2)n—, having an iodine value of up to 162.90, a melting point as low as -17.3 ? and stronger low-temperature floatability. In contrast, the SFA was made up with saturated fatty acids and a few oleic acids, with an iodine value of 48.97 and a melting point of 38.8 ?. SFA had shown poor collectability and required a flotation temperature higher than 35 ?. The results of zeta potential measurements, solution chemistry calculation and FT-IR spectra revealed that both UFA and SFA can be adsorbed on the quartz surface activated by CaCl2 via the chemical and hydrogen bonding. The reason MFA having a poor flotation performance is the SFA has an extremely high melting point which affecting the dissolution of the dispersion.

The worldwide implementation of corrosion protection of low alloyed automotive metal sheets by zinc coating has led to supply shortages of zinc free non-alloyed steel scrap in the foundry industry. In a collaboration project, partly financed by the German government, with partners from the automotive industry, zinc metallurgy, scrap trading, foundry industry, and plant construction, a new acid-based pre-dezincification process has been developed, and a pilot plant with throughput of about 100 t/d has been put into operation at the Clausthal Umwelt-Institut GmbH (CUTEC) together with the Clausthal University of Technology in Germany. During the treatment process, acid from a zinc metallurgical plant will be supplied, which can be recycled to the primary zinc extraction process after raising the zinc concentration to more than 130 g/L zinc. This way, the separation of small amounts of iron by precipitation and the electrolytic zinc winning are outsourced and, as a result, the pre-dezincification process runs waste-free. In Germany, the amount of zinc coated ?new scrap? is approx. 3 million t per year with a zinc content of approximately 60,000 t per year. The possible additional incomes for the dezincified steel scrap are in the order of ?40 to ?50 per ton of scrap, the gained zinc content during the acid dezincification defrays the costs of the process, if the throughput is more than 700 t/d. In comparison to conventional dezincification during the electro arc furnace process followed by upgrading in a rotary kiln (Waelz process), the acid dezincification process running at a maximum of 50°C will cut the energy costs by up to 74% and the CO2 emission by up to 88%. In fact, a demonstration plant is being designed right now and will be installed for processing a part of the zinc coated metal scrap from the Volkswagen AG in Wolfsburg, Germany. In September 2005, after 30 years experiencing in operating an ESF using a falling water film shell cooling system, Antam entered the new era in operating an ESF, after completely modernized its ESF No. 2 from a falling water film shell cooling system to a copper cooling system. Further, in the beginning of 2007, Ferronickel plant No. 3, where its ESF also uses copper coolers, was successfully commissioned. By operating an ESF using a copper cooling technology, Antam has to face some challenges to establish the operation stability. Besides that, the chances to maximize the furnace efficiency are greatly opened. The shielded-arc mode of electrode tip is selected to operate an ESF under relatively high furnace power to produce metal having tap temperature below 1500? and slag having tap temperature below 1600?. It leads to electric current unbalance. Further, operating an ESF using a copper cooler system under high voltage as consequence of the furnace power raise increases metal and slag tap temperature. This condition damages furnace integrity fast. Besides that, relatively high metal temperature increases its pressure during metal tapping. It leads to failure in closing the metal tap hole. The main different ways in operating an ESF using a falling water film shell cooling system and a copper cooling system lie in the electrode tip mode, the water specification used for cooler, metal tap block maintenance and allowed metal & slag level in furnace. Since a copper cooler system allows an ESF to be operated by consuming nickel ore having ratio Fe / Ni up to eight and producing slag having relatively high Fe content in slag, an undesirable silicon reversion phenomenon becomes an obstacle in reaching the operation stability. A copper cooler technology lets Antam to take a chance to increase its capacity. Modernizing the ESF No.2 had increased its furnace power from 17 MWh to 25 MWh. Meanwhile the ESF No. 3 can be operated up to 42 MWh. This technology allows an ESF to be operated under relatively high furnace power above 25 MWh safely as well as prolong the campaign life of ESF brick. Further, lowering ESF power consumption, extending the limitation of ratio S/M in nickel ore consumed and adjusting Ni grade in ferronickel product can be gained by applying this technology.

"The major ilmenite reserves are located in India at Chavara (CH), Manavalakurichi ( MK) and Chatrapur, Orissa (OR). India stands first in terms of ilmenite reserves, which are estimated to be 278 million tonnes out of which, 142 million tonnes are processable. Mineralo-chemical analysis shows that Chavara ilmenite is the most weathered one with about 60% TiO2 while Chatrapur is the least weathered with about 50% TiO2. Co-existence of ilmenite with pseudorutile, rutile and haematite is observed in substantially varying amounts in the three deposits. It is observed that the tropical weathering rather than the source rock difference has apparently played an important role in imparting major compositional and structural dissimilarities among ilmenites in different places.In processing of ilmenite through the Becher process, aeration rusting of pre-reduced ilmenite is found to be the rate limiting step thus, affecting the productivity of the process. Investigations have proved that the addition of some organic compounds such as glyoxal, sucrose etc., to the system accelerates the reaction to such an extent that the rusting time has been reduced to less than half.A new route of processing ilmenite for synthetic rutile has also been developed in which, ilmenite is carbothermally reduced and then processed through plasma route. The slag thus obtained is processed further to get high-grade synthetic rutile, metallic iron and high purity iron oxide. The process has been scaled up in a continuous moving bed plasma reactor. It is technologically and economically more viable where, all the iron values are recovered as salable byproducts. This paper describes the salient features of the technologies developed for the beneficiation of ilmenite to synthetic rutile."

Bioleaching method makes use of bacteria in solving metallic sulphides, so that these bacteria tend to convert insoluble metal sulphides into soluble sulphates. Since the kinetics description of this process is inevitable for better interpretation of relation between metabolism and growth of live organisms, as well as optimization of metals extraction processes, in this paper, this description is represented and designed in mathematic (kinetics) model for copper sulphide minerals based on Monod kinetics model. According to this model, special growth rate of bacteria (?) is a hyperbola function of restrictive substrate concentration (S). By Solving and developing of Monod kinetics model, a comprehensive kinetics model for bioleaching of copper sulphide minerals results. The designed is also applicable for other metal sulphides.

"In this work, a novel compound 4-Amino-5-mercapto-1,2,4-triazole was first synthesized and its selective adsorption mechanism on the surface of chalcopyrite was comprehensively investigated using UV-vis spectra, zeta potential, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy(FTIR), X-ray Photoelectron Spectrscpy Measurements(XPS), and Time of Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) and first principle calculations. The experimental and computational results consistently demonstrated that AMT would chemisorb onto the chalcopyrite surface by the formation of a five-membered chelate ring. The first principle periodic calculations further indicated that AMT would prefer to adsorb onto Cu rather than Fe due to the more negative adsorption energy of AMT on Cu on the chalcopyrite (001) surface, which was further confirmed by the coordination bonding energies of AMT-Cu and AMT-Fe based on the simplified cluster models at a higher accuracy level (UB3LYP/Def2TZVP). The bench scale results indicated that the selective index improved significantly when using AMT as a potential chalcopyrite depressant in Cu-Mo flotation separation.INTRODUCTIONFroth flotation is one of the most important processes to separate valuable minerals from gangue by taking advantage of differences in the physical chemistry of their surface properties(Laitinen et al., 2014), particularly in their surface hydrophobicity. Hydrophobicity differences between valuable and gangue minerals could be regulated by adding different chemical additives (surfactants)(Kor, Korczyk, Addai-Mensah, Krasowska, & Beattie, 2014), such as collector and depressant. It could be conducted economically to selectively separate and enrich the complicated and/or poor ores, by adopting appropriate surfactants. For example, the beneficiation of molybdenite usually relies on a two-stage process to realize flotation separation of molybdenite from other unwanted sulphide ores(Wie & Fuerstenau, 1974). In the first step, a bulk molybdenite concentrate is produced by utilizing kerosene/ diesel oil and pine oil/alcohols as collector and frother, respectively. Second, sodium hydrosulphide, sodium cyanide, ammonium sulphide, or Nokes reagent are adopted as depressants in the separation stage. However, these depressants are usually toxicant and cannot meet the requirements of environmental protection. A large number of efforts have been taken to develop alternative environmentally-friendly depressants (Ansari & Pawlik, 2007; J. H. Chen, Lan, & Liao, 2013; Li et al., 2015; Yin, Sun, Hu, Zhai, & Guan, 2017; Yin, Sun, Hu, Zhang, Guan, Liu, et al., 2017; Yin et al., 2016). Although some novel and environmental-friendly depressants have been reported to achieve good performance in Cu-Mo flotation separation at a laboratory scale, there are still some challenging problems, including toxicity, high price or poor performance in practice, which severely limit their practical applications in Cu-Mo flotation separation on a commercial scale."

"The mining industry is currently facing significant challenges to identify and adopt sustainable collector chemistry that effectively recover value minerals in difficult-to-process low-grade resources. These are typically characterized by complex mineralogy and the presence of significant amounts of penalty gangue sulfide minerals, especially pyrit which is a challenge to separate from value minerals at many major mine operations. Three chemical strategies for dealing with gangue sulfides and penalty elements are: a) selective flotation of value minerals while rejecting penalty minerals in the whole circuit, b) rejecting penalty minerals in an appropriate part of the circuit using selective depressants, c) using a combination of selective collectors and depressants in appropriate parts of the circuit. This paper will evaluate different strategies for dealing with those penalty elements and propose the most efficient alternative. New products and application technologies have been developed in the past 25 years by Cytec for implementing these strategies as dictated by the particular needs of a given plant. However, in recognition of the growing interest in meeting the sustainability challenges, Cytec Research and Development have been focused in the development of greener products (collectors, modifiers and frothers) and processes using FLOTATION MATRIX 100TM approach used to develop the optimal collector system for each specific ore. An overview of these new developments is given in this paper using case studies of application of selective collectors and polymeric modifiers including the newer, greener chemistries."

The large-scale vibrating screens with high processing capacity and efficiency are now in great demand in the mineral processing industry of China. However, as the equipment is always suffering from the strong external harmonic exciting force, the inertial force and the impact from the minerals, the fracture of the beam and the crack of the lateral plate are easy to occur, which has a negative effect on the reliability of the equipment itself and the industrial production. Considering the essential high reliability of the equipment, a new large-scale vibrating screen with duplex statically indeterminate mesh beam structure (VSDSIMBS) was developed. The natural characteristics, namely, the natural frequency (or the modal frequencies) and the natural mode, and the dynamic characteristics of the VSDSIMBS were obtained by the modal analysis and the harmonic response analysis. In addition, the dimensions and the constructions of the statically indeterminate plate and the mesh beam were chosen as the design parameters, to which the sensitivity of the whole mass, the maximum deformation and the maximum stress of the duplex statically indeterminate mesh beam structure (DSIMBS) were summarized for the optimization of the DSIMBS. Now the large-scale VSDSIMBS is being well used in China.

Organo-bentonite production enjoys important applications including solvent based paints and, more importantly, the production of polymer/bentonite nanocomposites. Quarternary ammonium salts in this regard are still considered as the most versatile reagents in the process of hydrophobization. In this study, a purified form of Resadiye region bentonites, which is one of the most significant sodium bentonite deposits in the world, was used. The raw Na-Bentonite was typically characterized by chemical analysis, XRD and DTA analysis and more importantly for its cation exchange capacity (CEC). Other technological properties such as swelling index, pH, apparent viscosity, water absorption, oil absorption were also conducted on the raw bentonite. The mineralogical analysis of the raw bentonite reveals that it contains about 80 % montmorillonite together with other associated gangue minerals including feldspar, quartz, calcite, dolomite, coloured impurities and other clay minerals. The raw bentonite was subjected to two stage processing involving a series of hydrocylones. Different apex and vortex diameters and different pressures were employed in order to produce a bentonite concentrate with 95 meq/100g CEC from a CEC of 71 meq/100 g. This high quality concentrate was used in the production of organo-bentontonite. The modification was performed with two different quaternary amines, i.e. Trimethyl Phenyl Ammonium Chloride (TPAC) and Hexadecyl Trimethyl Ammonium Bromide (HDTMA-Br). In the modification procedure, three parameters, i.e., adsorption density, zeta potential, swelling index and apparent viscosity were studied simultaneous-ly from the same suspension to identify both the mechanism of the process and also the degree of hydrophobicity. Adsorption measurements were made as a function of conditioning period, pH, and reagent concentration. Simultaneous examination of the adsorption density, zeta potential and apparent viscosity enabled us to pinpoint the optimum region of hydrophobicity which was subsequently tested by settling and critical coagulation concentration in both water as polar and toluene as nonpolar solvents. The results are analyzed in the light of experimental data.

"Comparison of the two most commonly used classes of depressant in the South African platinum industry is complicated by the fact that these polymers induce different effects on the surfaces onto which they adsorb. The use of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), which is ionically charged in solution, can lead to increased particle dispersion in addition to the effect of reduced surface hydrophobicity (depression). Guar is typically only slightly charged in solution. Comparison of these two depressants is complicated since it is uncertain whether differences in their action is a result of either depression of dispersion effects.This work investigates the role of dispersion independently to that of depression in the batch flotation of a platinum bearing ore. An inorganic dispersant, sodium hexametaphosphate (NaHMP) was added in parallel to the uncharged guar depressant to simulate the action of depressants with varying degrees of dispersion. By distinguishing between the material recovered by entrainment and the floatable gangue and by including the effects of froth stability it was possible to decouple the effects of dispersion and depression.The results show that both dispersion and depression led to increased grade of the sulphide minerals. Depression leads to a decreased recovery of floatable gangue minerals. Dispersion leads to an increased recovery rate of these minerals and an accompanying decrease in froth stability."

Polymer dispersants, also known as grinding aids, are widely used to reduce the viscosity of mineral particle suspensions and to improve energy efficiency during fine grinding. In this study, the effect of polymer dispersant with different molecular structure on the suspension properties in the wet stirred media milling of limestone was studied. The stability of suspension was studied by combining rheological and zeta potential measurements. The PDI value of polymers corresponds to the width of the molecular weight distribution so that low PDI corresponds to narrow MW distribution and high PDI to the wide one. In this study, two traditionally fractionated polymer dispersants with high PDI (over 2) and one novel polymer dispersant with low PDI (1.2) has been tested. It was noticed that dispersants worked as electrosteric stabilizators and prevented the agglomeration of ground limestone particles. The uses of dispersants could increase solids concentration used in the grinding experiments and at the same time lower the particle size and specific energy consumption. The obtained particle sizes were about 1 µm regardless of which dispersant was used or the amount of it. The novel dispersant with low PDI reduced viscosity most when compared with the traditionally fractionated polymer dispersants. Results indicated that even higher solids concentrations can be used at the same amount of dispersant when the novel low PDI polymer dispersant is used. Alternatively, lower dosage of novel low PDI dispersant can be used compared to traditionally fractionated dispersants.
