Investigations of the Gorda Ridge within the proclaimed U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone off northern California and southern Oregon, and the Mid-Atlantic Ridge extending along the center of the Atlantic Ocean, have received new impetus from the discovery of hot black smokers, sizeable polymetallic massive sulfide deposits, and vent animals at the Mid-Atlantic Ridge by the NOAA VENTS Program in 1985. Prior to that time, the oceanographic community focused investigations of seafloor venting at the faster-spreading oceanic ridges of the Pacific Ocean including the East Pacific Rise, the Galapagos spreading center and the Juan de Fuca Ridge because a consensus held that the faster spreading rates at these ridges were necessary to supply the heat to drive black smoker-type venting. As the only oceanic ridge in the Pacific with slow-spreading characteristics, the Gorda Ridge is an outlier of the slow-spreading ridge system that extends through the Atlantic Ocean and western Indian Ocean comprising more than half the 55,000-kilometer-length of the globe-encircling oceanic ridge system. In response to recent discoveries at the Mid-Atlantic Ridge the oceanographic community is shifting more of its activity to investigation of hydrothermal venting and related processes at slow-spreading oceanic ridges. The source of ore metals for base and precious metal volcanogenic massive sulfide (vms) deposits has been debated for decades. Metals can be obtained from high-temperature sea water-rock reactions in subseafloor circulatory hydrothermal systems, or provided by the magmatic fluids that are degassed from magma. The magmatic signatures are largely erased in the hydrothermal system by the overwhelming, long-term circulation of seawater. Melt inclusions in phenocrysts (plagioclase, olivine, pyroxene) of volcanic rocks provide an effective means of understanding the potential for a magmatic contribution to the ore-forming fluids. We present results of a melt inclusion study on the volcanic rocks that host active seafloor hydrothermal fields in the eastern Manus immature back-arc pull-apart basin of Papua New Guinea and an Ordovician-age back arc in New Brunswick, Canada that hosts the ?giant? (330 mmt) Brunswick #12 vms ore deposit. A fluid phase is typically observed in cavities within melt inclusions, indicating that the magma was saturated with volatiles prior to its eruption. The fluid is CO2-dominated with lesser H2O and CH4 in melt inclusions of mafic volcanics and is H2O-rich in felsic volcanics. Tiny crystals and amorphous precipitates (recrystallized at Brunswick #12) of Fe, Ni, Zn, Cu and Mn chlorides, sulfides and oxides coat the walls of the vapor cavities. The crystals include magnetite, magnesite, calcite, anhydrite, gypsum, barite, pyrite, chalcopyrite, halite, silicates and apatite. At Manus, the compositions of the precipitates on the bubble walls of melt inclusions are similar to those found in the vesicles in the matrix glass of the same sample. The ore metals in the volatile phases changed from Ni+Zn+Cu+Fe ? Cu+Zn+Fe ?Fe+Zn (+Pb?) as the magma evolved from basalt, basaltic andesite ? andesite, dacite ? rhyodacite, rhyolite. Glass of the melt inclusions compared to that of the matrix of the rocks from Manus have significantly higher concentrations of H2O (av. 1.64 vs 0.7wt%), Cl (av. 2500 vs1300 ppm) and S (av. 900 vs 100 ppm) suggesting that these volatiles were extensively exsolved from the magma. A minimum of 1.0 to 1.7wt% of magmatic volatiles is estimated to have been degassed before and during the eruptions. The focused discharge of a magmatic fluid as a result of pre-eruptive degassing could be responsible for the metals in the sulfide deposits on the seafloor. If 1 km3 of magma were emplaced in a shallow chamber, then the associated magmatic fluid would be 35.1 million tonnes. If this fluid contained 2.3 wt% Zn and 7.2 wt% Cu (Yang and Scott, 1996, Nature), a total of 0.8 million tonnes of Zn and 2.5 million tonnes of Cu would be to the hydrothermal system.

Kuroko-type deposits exist in Japanese EEZ. Some of them are present in the Izu-Ogasawara oceanic island arc south of Tokyo. Major two Kuroko-type deposits occur in the area. One is the Sunrise hydrothermal field occurring on the caldera floor of Myojin knoll, which is likely to be the developed stage in sulfide mineralization. Another is present in the crater of Suiyo seamount that is the early stage of sulfide mineralization. The two deposits are here presented on the growth history based on samples recovered by Benthic Multicoring System (BMS).

Every year approximately 22 million tonnes of marine sand and gravel are dredged form British waters. The eastern English Channel (EEC) contains substantial reserves, a proportion of which have been identified by the aggregates industry for potential future exploitation. The main aim of this study is to produce broadscale marine habitat maps of the EEC area. The UK aggregates industry has formed a consortium of representatives (the eastern English Channel Association), and have sponsored an initial baseline survey and follow-up sampling programmes as part of a Regional Environmental Assessment (REA) covering a patchwork of aggregate prospecting areas. To complement this effort, a large-scale geophysical survey was conducted in 2005 to place the REA in a wider spatial context and, thereby, to help assess the environmental significance of any future impacts arising from commercial aggregate extraction over the broader region of the EEC.

Coastal and marine aggregate (sand and gravel) mining on US continental shelves is a major activity that supplies industrial and commercial demands for these raw materials. Because Pacific, Atlantic, and Gulf coasts contain significant shoreline segments that are in a critical state of erosion, sand-gravel and mixed sediment (sands with a high percentage of silt-plus-clay) deposits are mined in efforts to mitigate land loss. Sandy shores, and to a limited extent gravel coasts, erode by shoreline retreat due to relative sea-level rise and sediment starvation in littoral drift patterns. Mostly gravel shores occur in high latitudes and shorelines often advance seaward due to isostatic rebound following the LGM (Last Glacial Maximum 18,000 YBP). Sandy and fine-grained shores occurring in middle and low latitudes of the conterminous United States are problem coasts that require beach renourishment and reconstruction of barrier islands. Muddy coasts of the Mississippi Delta region are especially problematic because some islands are literally disappearing in response to subsidence. Replacement of sediments lost to the littoral drift system or returned to sedimentary sinks by drowning is thus a critical endeavor that involves annually dredging hundreds of millions of cubic meters of sediments from the continental shelf area. The types of shelf sediments that are amenable to marine mining techniques, their occurrence, and means of detection are highlighted in this paper. Minable Sediments on the Continental Shelf Wide varieties of sedimentary bodies that occur on the continental shelf are amenable to mining for beach renourishment and barrier island (beach-dune-marsh system) reconstruction. Relict terrestrial deposits make up a small but important proportion of shelf sediments that were deposited on coastal plains, now drowned by the post-glacial sea-level rise to form continental shelves. Examples of these deposits include drowned moraines, outwash plains, eskers, and kettles along the northern Atlantic coast in addition to siliciclastics along middle latitude Pacific, Atlantic, and Gulf coasts. Special cases include carbonate sequences along tropical costs of Florida and the muddy coasts of deltas, mostly in Louisiana. Specific types of minable deposits thus include shoreface attached sand sheets, dunes, and ridges in addition to offshore inter-reefal sands (between coral reefs in the Florida Reef Tract), bank deposits, and sand waves (ridges) that extend into US territorial waters. Nearshore siliciclastics include ebb-tidal deltas and bars. Drowned river valleys occur along all three US coasts and can be exploited for their fluvial sands if the covering mud sheets are thin.

Swire Seabed is dedicated to being at the forefront of the Autonomous Subsea Revolution. The company is currently working along and developing operational, technical and market strategies where autonomous technology is the driving force. Swire Seabed’s vessel Seabed Constructor is currently mobilized and operating eight Hugin AUVs and 6 Surface going USVs. This significant and revolutionary spread is owned by Ocean Infinity. Ocean Infinity and Swire Seabed is currently involved in the search for the missing MH370 – in about 3 months the vessel and autonomous spread have fine combed an area of deep sea floor spanning over more the 100 000 km2 . With such a considerable spread with a depth rating of 6000 meter – Swire Seabed and Ocean Infinity is challenging long held paradigms in subsea mapping and resource surveys. Highly accurate and precise data can be acquired for large areas in record time, and at a comparatively much reduced cost. As one earlier required several vessels and associated crews and logistical support – Swire Seabed and Ocean infinity are now able to operate a large number of AUVs and USVs, through technological advances in automatic data-processing and interpretation, from a single offshore vessel. This opens up vast possibilities for emerging markets such as subsea-minerals. Swire Seabed is also developing strong collaborative relationships with academic institutions. Along with UIB Swire Seabed is developing methodology for deep sea geological and geophysical resource searches applying AUVs at an industrial scale – this work is based on UIBs groundbreaking work and significant experience in the same fields. In particular Swire Seabed and K.G Jebsen Centre for Deep Sea Research (UIB) have developed methodologies for conducting detailed Seep-Searches at a large geographical scale. UIB and Swire Seabed is further pursuing a formalized long term relationship for academic and industrial cooperation and exchange in AUV operation and methodology development. Whilst K.G Jebsen Centre for deep sea research have been involved in basig deep sea research for years, Swire Seabed have specialized in cost-effective heavy duty operations in water depths greater the 3500 meters. This collaboration affords the subsea mining community a unique pool of both insight and operational capacity.

Marine benthic habitats are vulnerable to the influence of a wide range of anthropogenic activities (e.g. sand and gravel extraction, dredged material disposal and trawling). Traditionally, benthic ecologists have relied on point sampling techniques such as grabs, corers and dredges to provide information on the physical nature of the substrates and their associated benthic fauna. However, information of this nature only relates to the specific point on the seabed from which the sample was collected and the interpolation of such data to predict the wider distribution of substrata and associated fauna may be unreliable. Our approach uses a range of acoustic, photographic and physical sampling methodologies to produce continuous acoustic coverage maps which can be used to assist with the interpretation of faunal distributions. This approach has been used to assess the impacts of marine sand and gravel extraction at the seabed at two sites off the east coast of England in the southern North Sea. The first study site (designated ?Area 222?) is located 20km off the southeast coast of England and was surveyed in 2001 using sidescan sonar, single beam bathymetry, seabed photography and also a 0.1m2 Hamon grab for the collection of benthos and sediment samples. The main objectives of this investigation were to provide an indication of the spatial distribution of the sediments and macrofauna in the wider area encompassing the dredged site, to evaluate the scope for the effects of marine sand and gravel extraction to extend beyond the boundaries of the site and to provide a wider geographical context for time series investigations. At this site, an acoustic basemap was utilised in conjunction with faunal sampling and photographic groundtruthing, to determine the nature and distribution of the seabed sediments and their associated features. Disturbances at the seabed arising from historic sand and gravel extraction activities were mapped, and this information was helpful in establishing biological cause and effect relationships. The acoustic basemap was also used to target biological reference sites against which the effects of adjacent man-made disturbances could be evaluated.

INTRODUCTION Starting in February 2014, 19 partners from EU industry, research institutions and academia joined forces and formed the Blue Mining consortium. In the following four years, they have set out to work on the development of deep sea mining technology, looking into exploration, identification, economic assessment and vertical transport systems for the mining of seafloor massive sulphides and polymetallic nodules. In the beginning 2018 this research & development project has come to an end. The Blue Mining project was one of the first EU subsidised projects embracing the TRL system. This system describes a method of de-risking technology using a simple 9-step approach. This method requires experimental testing in laboratory and relevant environments to be able to reach the higher levels (TRL>5) This paper will discuss the progress in development of the vertical transport system, with a focus on the performed experimental work. This paper will discuss three topics: • Booster station technology • Riser dynamics • Vertical hydraulic transport process. BOOSTER STATION TECHNOLOGY Deep knowledge of transport processes is a prerequisite for a clog free vertical transport One of the key technologies in the VTS is the booster station. The centrifugal pump booster station concept is developed in Blue Mining, it consists of two centrifugal pumps and multiple valves, assembled in member-type frame. Deep sea conditions pose special requirements on all components due to the extreme pressures at large water depths. In the Blue Mining project a Deep Sea Special Motor has been developed and tested in laboratory and in the field. The motor is completely filled, lubricated and cooled using seawater due to its unique open structure, furthermore it does not require any lubricants minimizing the environmental pressure of the motor. The motor is first extensively tested in a laboratory, after these tests have been concluded successfully, the motor is shipped to Norway where it has been successfully tested for more than 100 hours at 425 meter water depth.

This is a framework study financed by the Maritime Innovation Programme of The Netherlands and several institutions actively involved in the research of the environmental impact of deep sea mining; IHC Mining, MTI Holland, Delft University of Technology, NIOZ, IMARES, Boskalis Westminster, AllSeas and TNO. For this framework study the following mining activities have been identified to be relevant to assess the ecological impact of a deep sea mining operation: a) excavation, b) tailings return, c) vertical transport, d) vessel operations, e) ore transport and f) general operations. For this paper, only one mining activity has been selected as an example for the assessment of ecological effects. This is one of the main activities introduced by the new technology envisaged for developing deep sea mining: tailings return.

The Marine Operations and Engineering section of the British Geological Survey based in Edinburgh, Scotland have, over the last 30 years, developed and operate a series of remotely operated, and powered, seabed coring systems. These systems were initially developed to provide a cost-effective solution to ground truth seismic reflection data for regional geological mapping, where the only solution that existed was conventional and expensive drill-ships. Since the early 1990?s these tools have been used for many other applications in industry and science. Currently the systems can operate in up to 2000 m water depth for 5m seabed penetration and up to 4500m water depth for a specialised oriented core drill which collects a scribed core to 0.8m below seabed. Scientific applications focus on determining the geology of an area and follows pre-determined geophysical interpretations. It usually also follows other coring attempts with non-powered coring equipment which is invariably unsuccessful if the strata is over-consolidated sediments or hard rock. Commercial applications include cable and pipeline route surveys, diamond, gold and base metal exploration, beach reclamation and aggregate materials evaluation. In many cases there is a blend of science and commercial investigation typified by coring in hydrothermal vent areas or carrying out geological coring in a frontier oilfield province. The versatility of the drills allows cost effective and rapid operations in remote and hostile areas where a rapid investigation may be the only one possible in a short weather window. The deepwater operational capability also allows science and commercial assay to be obtained ahead of potential exploitation and allows formulation of scientific theories or commercial project plans based on sound core data. Being mobile and compact these corers may be used from suitable (Dynamically Positioned or Anchored) vessels of convenience and thus provide a cost effective platform for sampling different types of seabed geology on an international basis.

At present, marine ferromanganese crusts of seamounts are of great interest as a source of high-tech metals. The metals most enriched in these deposits are essential for a wide variety of green-tech, emerging-tech, and energy applications (Hein et al., 2013). There is a grate number data on the content of major and minor metals (thousands analyses). However, information on the content of such elements as platinum, gold and silver in the world literature is limited. The concentrations (N – number of analyses) of platinum, gold and silver in the Pacific are 418 ppb (N = 105), 35 ppb (N = 72), 1.02 ppm (N = 26), respectively, and in the North Pacific Prime Zone - 477 ppb (N = 66), 55 ppb (N = 13), 0.1 ppm (N = 4); in the Atlantic Ocean is 567 ppb (N = 2), 6 ppb (N = 2), 0.20 ppm (N = 18), in the Indian Ocean, 211 ppb (N = 6), 21 ppb (N = 2), 0.37 ppm (N = 9) respectively; (Hein et al., 2013). The northern part of the Pacific is poorly studied in this question. The samples of ferromanganese deposits (FMD) was recovered from the Govorov Guyot (Magellan seamounts), MZh-33 Guyot (Marshall Islands), as well as the Detroit Guyot (Imperor Ridge) and Yomei Guyot (Fe-Mn placer Holes 431 and 431A DSDP, Imperor Ridge).

We report preliminary results for a group of unique samples collected with MBARI’s ROV Tiburon on August 12, 2005. The samples were collected from the East Blanco Depression (EBD) diffuse-flow hydrothermal field, which was determined in a previous study to cover an area of at least 100 m by 80 m (Hein et al., 1999). The survey reported on here extends that field to more than 1500 m in an approximately N-S direction. The EBD, a pull-apart basin, occurs near the western end of the Blanco Fracture Zone (BFZ), which connects the Juan de Fuca and Gorda Ridge spreading centers (Fig. 1). The samples were collected from a waterdepth range of 3343-3380 m.

Accumulation of cobalt -rich ferromanganese crusts on Pacific seamounts located off-ridge in the Hawaiian EEZ, represents a complex process that involves geologic aging of the seamounts, geographic transportation- of the seamounts on the Pacific plate during the past 80 million years, and geochemical history of the oceans for that period. A comparative study of the building and erosion processes of the young Loihi Submarine Volcano, located south of the Island of Hawaii , and the 80 million year old Cross Seamount, located west of Hawaii , shows that both edifices show wide armchair-shaped talus chutes and intervening ridges of exposed dikes. The similarity between the observed mass wasting process on Loihi and Cross suggests that the slopes of submarine volcanoes are geologically unstable from the time of their origin on the seafloor through their entire geological history. The slopes of Cross are covered by coalesced ferromanganese crust covered talus, steep exposed dike faces, and crust covered dike ridges. A study of the stratigraphy of the crusts shows a range of thicknesses and number of unconformities present. The thickest crusts, up to 8 centimeters, are found preserved within the larger coalesced slabs along the shallower slopes of the talus chutes and along the crests of the ridges between water depths of 400 and 1800 meters. The platinum content was used in stratigraphic correlation between the crusts in the coalesced slabs and those collected from ridges with the PISCES V submersible. A recently completed series of projects funded by the Commonwealth of Virginia and the U.S. Minerals Management Service was designed to assess the distribution of heavy minerals on the inner continental shelf adjacent to Virginia. These projects indicate that a suite of minerals of both strategic and economic interest is present. Analysis of several hundred grab and core samples shows that zircon, monazite, and titanium minerals (ilmenite, rutile, and leucoxene) occur in quantities that probably warrant further study by the mineral industry. Furthermore, side-scan sonography and shallow seismic profiles have provided information on the thickness and areal extent of the mineral-bearing sands. Possible development of the resource is enhanced by a potential use of offshore sand for beach nourishment. The results of the preliminary studies have been presented in open-file publications and oral reports in order that the mineral industry might have an up to date basis upon which to consider more exploratory work. Much of the effort south of the mouth of Chesapeake Bay was made in cooperation with and enhanced by an independent study of sand resources for beach nourishment and other needs. Preliminary review of the quantitative analyses of the heavy-mineral content of several hundred samples demonstrates that the distribution of high concentrations is non-uniform. An international research team working through the Hawai?i Undersea Research Laboratory (HURL) undertook a bold challenge to explore the chemistry, geology, mineral formation and superheated hydrothermal vents of the Kermadec Island Arc. With the mothership, R/V Ka?imikai-o-Kanaloa, scientists from six research institutions explored the active submarine volcanoes stretching over a line of volcanoes 1,000 miles long between Samoa and New Zealand. The expedition left Hawaii on the 18th of March 2005 and returned on the 5th of August having covered a distance of 10,000 miles between Hawaii and New Zealand. Scientists from the USA, New Zealand and Germany used the HURL submersibles, Pisces IV and Pisces V, as well as the remotely-operated vehicle RCV-150, aboard the R/V Ka?imikai-o-Kanaloa to dive into active volcanoes to water depths of 2,000 meters. Scientists from New Zealand, the USA and Germany conducted 41 dives on the previously unexplored (from manned submersibles) submarine volcanoes. Ten active volcanoes were explored during this time. Hundreds of specimens of new and unusual marine life, water chemistry, extremophile microorganisms, mineral formations and volcanic rocks were collected during this expedition with the two submersibles and the ROV. Bizarre natural events, such as the oozing of hot liquid sulfur from the ocean floor onto the skids of the submersible were observed. Carbon dioxide gas was observed profusely streaming into the seawater from the volcanoes, making these one of the greatest contributions to hot house gasses entering the atmosphere.

Hydrothermal circulation that produces sulfide deposits in the marine environment can also produce sulfide deposits in lakes. The major differences in terms of process are (1) in lakes the hydrothermal fluid is meteoric water of low salinity whereas in the marine setting it is saline and (2) the rocks that are leached of metals to produce the deposits are continental crust in one case and oceanic crust in the other. We have examined sulfides that are presently forming in two lakes ? Lake Tanganyika in east Africa and Lake Oyunuma in Hokkaido, Japan. Tanganyika is the second largest lake in the world and the second deepest rift lake, after Lake Baikal in southeastern Siberia. Two hydrothermal fields are known in its northern basin at Pemba and Cape Banza (Tiercelin et al., 1993). At Pemba, CO2 and CH4-rich, low temperature (53-88°C) hydrothermal fluids are forming decimeter-tall chimneys at 2-46 m water depth. Our microscopic and x-ray diffraction study of samples from the Pemba site reveal marcasite and pyrite to be the most common sulfides. Minor minerals include barite, hematite, bornite and chalcopyrite. Quartz and feldspar are also identified and were probably incorporated from the surrounding lake sediments. At Cape Banza, aragonite chimneys, up to 70 cm high, are venting fluids at 66-103°C.

During the last few years autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) technology has evolved from concept demonstrators towards commercial products. The driving forces are the move for energy exploitation towards deeper waters, naval applications and the Internet driven need for more intercontinental underwater communication cables. Other applications emerging for the future will be within environmental research and monitoring and deepwater exploration. Deepwater developments beyond the continental shelf will require the same level of survey data quality and intervention access as established for shallow water. The potential for cost savings is two folds. Firstly, there is a reduction in the survey cost it self and secondly there is a considerable cost saving by avoiding over design of subsea installations due to lack of sufficient documentation of the field. In this scenario, there is an increasing understanding that underwater robotics and in particular AUVs will play an important role in future survey and subsea engineering work. The AUV as a free swimming underwater survey sensor carrier has several advantages compared to cable controlled ROV?s and deep towed systems: The paper prepared for the ?Underwater Mining Institute 2003? on Jeju Island, Korea will focus on the HUGIN AUV concept and field results to date.

Around 235 million tonnes of marine aggregates have been dredged in the last decade from the UK continental shelf alone. The current distribution of marine aggregate production licence areas in North West Europe reflects the relationship between a variety of factors such as the natural distribution of deposits of sand and gravel, the demand for aggregates, the technical capabilities of the dredging fleet and environmental considerations. Whilst the sand and gravel deposits targeted by the marine aggregate industry are generally relict and therefore geographically fixed, the remaining factors have evolved over time and will continue to do so in future. Applications for new licences must not only reflect the current situation, but anticipate future trends. The main markets for marine aggregates are the construction industry, centred around the larger centres of population and coastal protection projects along the coastline of Europe. The aggregate industry as a whole does not create demand but simply meets it. Many factors influence the overall demand for aggregates and guidance exists for those in authority and industry who need to plan for the supply of aggregates. Adequate supplies should be maintained at the best balance of social, environmental and economic cost, whilst ensuring that extraction and development are consistent with the principles of sustainable development.

There is increasing recognition that in order for a development project to proceed successfully, it must first obtain a ?social licence to operate? from concerned stakeholders. Obtaining this ?licence? is in many ways a separate process to the legal one which involves, among other things, submitting an environmental and social impact assessment (ESIA) to the appropriate regulatory authority for review. Essentially, the function of an ESIA is to present a project?s technical, financial and social benefits, together with its environmental and social impacts in a transparent way to enable regulators to make an informed decision about whether the benefits outweigh the impacts, and thus whether or not the proposed project should proceed. The focus in the early days of ESIAs was primarily technical and was aimed to answer two fundamental questions: ?Can the project be built?? and ?Can we minimise impacts to a level that is acceptable to the community?? Basically, the ESIA process was a technical test of competence, but more recently, ESIAs have become much more than this. The main ESIA risk is now more akin to a test of a project?s legitimacy ? i.e., with more weight placed on the social licence, or the political test of moral authority ? with the process involving stakeholders from multiple backgrounds and disciplines, including some anti-development NGOs/civil society groups with their views on mining, (particularly in developing nations), often already pre-determined. Within the backdrop of this potential maelstrom, now enter a proposal for a new industry (such as deep sea mineral extraction).
