Commercial mining of manganese nodules is expected to begin within the next 20 to 50 years in large areas of abyssal sea floor in the Pacific Ocean. While deep sea mining is expected to realize significant quantities of rare metals that are needed for modern technology, the mining operation will cause extensive resedimentation over large areas of deep sea floor, the effects of which are thought to be harmful to the benthic community. Our present knowledge of deep sea benthic ecology is so limited that we cannot predict the magnitude of the impact. In November 1994, the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea was enforced and giving added impetus to improving our understanding of the effects of future mining operations. In order to fully understand the impact of deep sea mining and to mitigate the harmful environmental effects, it is necessary to accumulate more information on the deep sea environment and benthic communities. To achieve these objectives and to understand the relationship between resedimentation and biological reaction, artificial impact experiments are being conducted by the USA and Germany. The former named BIE (Benthic Impact Experiment) began in 1991 and is being performed by NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration of the United State of America) in the North Equatorial Pacific Ocean. The latter named DISCOL (Disturbance and Recolonization Experiment in the Deep South Pacific Ocean) was started in 1989 and is being conducted in the South Equatorial Pacific Ocean by a scientific group from Hamburg University. The Metal Mining Agency of Japan (MMAJ) is also carrying out environmental studies. These studies, commenced in 1989, are being conducted in association with NOAA and include an experiment named the Japan Deep Sea Impact Experiment (JET).

The most exciting frontier in Ocean Technology is represented by a new class of Marine Bioproducts, the source of which lies in marine microorganisms. The microorganisms include microalgae, bacteria and archaea. These organisms represent very diverse, adaptive life forms and in their metabolic processes use carotenoids, polyunsaturated fatty acids, ultraviolet blockers, as well as a wide range of enzymes that are pivotal in the production of new pharmaceuticals and nutraceutical products. These organisms cover a wide spectrum of ocean environments, from the shallow to the deep, from the normal to the extreme. The technological challenge is in the identification of candidate organisms, in the screening for valuable enzymes, and in the industrial production. A whole new range of collecting strategies involving submersibles, ROVs and in situ ocean floor instrumentation is emerging. New non-polluting industrial chemical processes involving the use of photobioreactors and extremophile bioreactors for breeding and monitoring these organisms in neo-farming technology is emerging. The commercial value of these candidate products is immense, as is the range of potential organisms. The dimension of this new industry is global. The Marine Bioproducts Engineering Center (MarBEC), funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), has been established at the University of Hawaii. The vision of MarBEC is to develop a seamless research system stretching from undergraduate education to industry for the purposes of producing valuable marine bioproducts outside of the normal chemical factory production. MarBEC is uniquely and strategically placed in the Pacific to explore, find, and adapt highly bioactive marine micro-organisms found in the tropical ocean. Since industry is progressing into the deep sea, marine scientists have expressed their concern about environmental disturbances which will be introduced by using the deep seafloor for mining metalliferous resources or as a repository for wastes. Environmental studies have been conducted on national levels and in bilateral or multilateral cooperation in the development of manganese nodule mining, as this is generally achieved in marine research. These investigations were partly large-scale and experimental approaches aiming at the assessment of the impacts expected to occur in commercial mining. The results elaborated till today and expected to be acquired in the foreseeable future may remain limited. Reliable impact evaluation will result from monitoring a Pilot Mining Operation (PMO). The lecture will present the broad outlines of a possible program and a preliminary calculation of approximate costs for such a combined industrial test and environmental monitoring event. Although the extent of necessary efforts for the environmental risks evaluation can only be estimated rather vaguely, it will become evident that the required human, technical, logistical, and financial resources to be mobilized will exceed industrial capacities and go beyond national funds. Therefore, such assessment of environmental risks is calling for broad international cooperation. While industrial developments for mining the deep sea will be ruled by competition or probably by restricted joint ventures, environmental care ranges outside competition and falls within the interest of all parties involved. Environmental studies, unlike technologies for the same function, do not primarily need duplication. International cooperation in PMO monitoring would equally well support all mining companies or consortia, it would minimize the efforts for all engaged in this challenging venture of deep-sea mining and it would maximize the precautionary discussion on and the care for the deep-sea environment.

In September 2005 Williamson & Associates, Inc. delivered the BMS2 remotely operated seafloor coring system to the Japan Oil, Gas & Minerals National Corporation (JOGMEC). During acceptance trials aboard the JOGMEC research vessel R/V Hakurei Maru No. 2 the BMS2 successfully recovered 7.44 m of rock core in 3377 m water at a site near the crest of a seamount about 500 nm SE of Japan. Hydrogenous ferromanganese oxide crust, basaltic lava, sandstone and volcanic sediments were sampled with near 100% core recovery. The BMS uses rotary rod coring tools to collect samples to a maximum depth of 30 m in water depths up to 6000 m. Depending on bottom type to be sampled, the BMS tool magazine can be loaded with various drilling tools including core barrels with different bit types, drill rod and bore hole casing. The drill has 9 video cameras, a suite of sensors and 60 hydraulic functions powering thrusters, telescoping legs, seawater pumps and all of the standard drilling controls. The BMS provides deep water investigations with the functionality of conventional diamond bit rod drilling currently the mainstay of exploration programs in land mining.

"Lifting riser in deep-seabed mining (DSM) is exposed to acute and chronic stresses of materials, whose yield will result in the most critical loss of total mining system. For freehanging riser (FHR), the axial vibration and local bending of riser may produce acute stresses, in the meanwhile, vortex-induced vibration (VIV) in relative current, friction and collisions of solid particles with inner-wall, and material corrosion in seawater are representative causes of chronic stresses. The chronical stresses bring about fatigue failure or abrupt failure by material loss. Hydraulic lifting is effective and promising for transportation of minerals, however, ecofriendly treatment of operating seawater is an unease hurdle to come over. Sizing of riser section confronts multi-directional problems, i.e. safety of slurry transportation (flow assurance), material safety of riser (wall thickness), seawater treatment on board, etc.A free-standing riser (FSR) might exclude a part of design problems of free-hanging riser and give a way to sustainable mining. FSR stands vertically by means of sub-buoyancy part(s). The top of FSR emerges above sea surface and is connected with mining platform through jumper line (supported by external yoke). Total amount of sub-buoyancy and location(s) have to be carefully determined in viewpoints of dynamics of FSI (fluidstructure interaction) in waves and currents. The concept of FSR gives more freedom for design of multi-functional riser system in view of sustainability of DSM. In DSM, sustainability concept may be focused on eco-friendly treatment of seawater and sediment, and safety of total mining system. For feasibility of FSR, however, installation, maintenance and repair need to be investigated thoroughly in collaboration with industry experts"

Submarine hydrothermal activity and mineralization related to island arc volcanism along the Tonga arc were explored during two research cruises in October 2009 (KODOS 09H) and February 2010 (KODOS 10H), respectively. In KODOS 09H cruise, geophysical survey, including multi-beam bathymetry, marine seismic and magnetic investigations, was performed on 10 volcanoes to find out possible structural discontinuity that can act as fluid pathway for formation of hydrothermal deposits at submarine caldera system. The result provided acoustic and seismic image maps and magnetic anomaly maps of targeted volcanoes. Then, detailed seafloor observation and sampling as well as deep tow side scan sonar survey were performed in KODOS 10H cruise on 5 volcanoes which are selected as targeted areas from the previous cruise. Among 5 targeted volcanoes, TA26 shows most extensive hydrothermal activity. Hydrothermal vents and alteration zone were observed on western caldera and summit of eastern cone of the TA26. Although only weak hydrothermal alteration was observed on eastern cone, mineralized fragments of chimney and mound were sampled from western wall of central caldera on TA25 volcano. On TA12 volcano, strong hydrothermal plume and alteration zone was detected during video tows operated between SW scoria cone and small ridge. However, only small amount of hydrothermal altered rocks were collected from TA12. Although hydrothermal activity and mineralization might be formed, supported by plume detection and result of geophysical survey, only weak alteration zones were observed on other two volcanoes (TA19 and TA22). The exploration area generally show shallow depth up to several tens of meters on summit where subsurface boiling of hydrothermal fluid might occur due to low hydraulic pressure, which can affect on styles of hydrothermal venting and mineralization process observed on Tonga submarine arc volcanoes.

KIGAM (Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources) has been doing various kinds of research works in marine minerals and energy resources exploration and utilization since early 1990s in Korea. In the presentation, the authors will introduce the recent research and development activities mainly focusing on the rare earth metals of the Pacific deep seabed Mn-nodules and gas hydrates which occur from Korean deep waters. KIGAM has been participating in the polymetallic manganese nodule exploration, mining and metal-extraction project, which is modulated by KIOST (Korea Institute of Ocean Sciences and Technology, formerly KORDI). Now KIGAM puts more focus on extracting precious and rare earth metals from the Mn-nodule as well as underlying sediments. The rare earth elements (REE) from seabed mineral deposits also draw attention to those countries including Korea which are lack in natural resources. KIGAM is doing several kinds of leaching experiments using various kinds of reagents under the different experimental parameters. Extraction of rare earth metals from deep sea nodule using H2SO4 and HCl solution showed good leaching effect. Two marine diamond deposits on concession 2b off Namaqualand along the South African Coast, have been systematically mined over the past year by the mv Moonstar. The two deposits, Smith?s Ulcer and Wedge Point Basin, are comparable in morphology, straddled the same water depths and have similar geology yet have given very different recoveries when compared to their respective grade models. These differences are best ascribed to the different style of mineralisation observed within the two deposits which has been directly controlled by the bedrock morphology. The smith?s Ulcer deposit has been formed in a metagreywacke bedrock displaying a strong north-south trending foliation which dips steeply to the west. Consequently the mineralisation is confined to narrow north-south linear trends with limited lateral extent (less than 5m) making extraction extremely difficult and somewhat variable. RE factors (recovered grade versus estimated grade) for this deposit range from 0.5 to 1.1. The Wedge Point Basin deposit is formed in a micaceous metaquartzite with a conjugate southwest northwest joint set, the southwest lineation being the more prominent, and structural foliation dipping gently to the west. The resultant style of mineralisation is confined to basinal features defined by topographical lows and is fairly lateral in extent (in order of 50m). Extraction of the mineralisation from this deposit is less arduous with recoveries more uniform, RE factors are frequently in the range 2 - 3. This style of mineralisation is more in line with what is to be expected from marine alluvial deposits, the nugget effect of diamond concentration being responsible for the high RE factor. The long narrow linear trends observed in Smith?s Ulcer demonstrably require a specialised approach in successfully sampling, modeling and ultimately mining.

"INTRODUCTIONFerromanganese (Fe-Mn) crusts are a kind of marine chemical sediment composed of Fe and Mn oxy-hydroxides as well as small amounts of clastic sediments, which are ubiquitously found on the surface of slopes of seamounts and oceanic plateaus at depths from 900 to 5500 meters below sea level (mbsl). Fe-Mn crusts contain extremely high concentrations of useful minor metals such as Co, Ni, Te, REEs, and thus are expected as submarine mineral resources. Also, Fe-Mn crusts record the change of chemical compositions of seawater during last several tens million years, which allow us to obtain clues to clarify the paleoenvironmental conditions at the time of its deposition. However, occurrence, chemical compositions, microbial community and growth patterns of ferromanganese crusts are yet fully understood. Hence, a comprehensive study on the genesis of ferromanganese crusts, such as growth rates and enrichment processes of elements, is required to better understand their resource potential as well as their applications to paleoceanographic study.Based on the resource potential of ferro-manganese crust, the project entitled “Next- Generation Technology for Ocean Resources Exploration” was launched as one of the governmental projects to develop the exploration technology based on the scientific research on the submarine resources such as hydrothermal deposits (e.g., a poster by Kawada et al.), ferro-manganese crusts. We have made several research cruise to seamounts in the north-western Pacific such as Takuyo-Daigo and Takuyo-Daisan seamounts (Fig. 1) ."

Drilling into an active hydrothermal system linked to convergent-margin felsic magmatism is a listed priority of the Ocean Drilling Program that addresses several fundamental geoscience issues. Solid and fluid products of felsic rock-water interaction, and the consequences for global chemical fluxes and for ore deposition, should differ from those in basaltic mid-ocean ridge environments already successfully tested by Legs 106, 139, 158 and 169. So, too, will fracturing controls on fluid pathways, and sources for metals and ligands. Researching the subsurface volcanic, structural/hydrologic, and mineralisation/alteration architecture of a drilled felsic-hosted system also has economic implications, especially for land¬based mineral exploration. A first-order hypothesis to be tested states that fluids derived from volatile-rich magmas are more important than recirculated seawater in convergent-margin hydrothermal systems - economic geologists increasingly appeal to this for creating "world-class" massive sulfide orebodies. Another hypothesis proposes "subhalative" massive sulfide deposition within hydraulically expanded volcanic products as a factor in generating large orebodies. Many second-order hypotheses such as leaching fractionated volcanics to cause gold enrichment in back¬arc systems also need testing. The thoroughly surveyed, active, PACMANUS hydrothermal field in the Eastern Manus back-arc basin of Papua New Guinea will be the site for ODP Leg 193 commencing in November 2000. It lies near the crest (1655-1750 m) of high-standing Pual Ridge, a 40 km-long edifice of dacite/rhyodacite with basal andesite all having geochemical and isotopic affinities with modern arc volcanoes of nearby New Britain. PACMANUS includes at least three focussed, high-temperature "smoker" sites with Cu+Au-rich massive sulfide deposits, and a field of diffuse, lower temperature venting through intensely altered dacite where modelling indicates significant subsurface mineralisation. Isotopic characteristics of deposits and vent fluids suggest magmatic contributions to the mineralising fluids.

The Manus back-arc basin behind the New Britain Trench is one of the major sites of active seafloor hydrothermal vent-fields which are considered to be modern-day analogue of felsic volcanic-hosted polymetallic massive sulfide deposits abundant in ancient geological record. Many of these deposits represent multi-million dollar resources, and yet very little are known about the fundamental processes leading to their formation. In November 2000 January 2001, the PACMANUS hydrothermal system in this region will be targeted by the Ocean Drilling Program Leg 193 to investigate the internal anatomy. A number of observations that suggest that the tectonic, magmatic and hydrothermal processes in the eastern Manus basin spreading center are unusual in that they can not be explained by a simple back-arc opening due to subduction of the New Britain Trench. Geochemistry of submarine volcanoes in the eastern Manus basin, for instance, shows affinity to arc rather than back-arc type volcanoes. Yet these submarine volcanoes lie too faraway from the Benioff-Wadati zone. One hypothesis is that the magmatic and subsequent hydrothermal activity of this region is a direct result of the irregularities in the deep crust and upper mantle structure and that the tectonic process is controlled by the sharp inflection of the New Britain Trench. According to this hypothesis, the two major southeast-trending strike-slip faults in the eastern Manus Basin, Djaul and Weitin Faults, should extend farther down and join to the New Britain Trench. They would form a transform arm of the triple junction with the New Britain Trench southeast of New Britain Island and southwest of Bougainville Island forming the other two arms. A trench-trench-transform triple junction can not be stable over time, and therefore a slight change in the plate velocity may lead to a dramatic change in the configuration of the plate boundaries. If so, the instability of the triple junction may cause large tectonic deformations, such as mantle uplift under the Manus basin due to mantle rupturing by transform faults, and therefore may explain the arc-style volcanism and unusual compositions of hydrothermal deposits in the eastern Manus basin.

Present study was stemmed from the survey associated with deep-sea mining in the KODOS area between Clarion Fracture Zone and Clipperton Fracture Zone located in the North Pacific Ocean. The study area, which is located in the southeastern part of North Pacific gyre, is oligotrophic waters with low nutrients and chl-a concentrations below 1µg/l (MOMAF, 1996). This area is also characterized by divergence at 8°N and convergence at 6°N, which moved northward or southward in the range of a few kilometers with seasonal and climate changes. If the waste materials related to deep-sea mining are intruded into the surface waters continuously, unexpected effects to water column ecosystem are anticipated negatively. In order to assess the impact on the planktonic ecosystem, natural variation need to be distinguished from anthropogenically induced variation in terms of the abundance and species composition of plankton. In this study, mesoscale variation of zooplankton community was reported in relation to the physical conditions in the northeastern Pacific during 1998 and 1999. Temperature and salinity were determined using a CTD from surface to 200m depth in July 3-20, 1998 and in June 22-July 1, 1999. Zooplankton samples were collected from two different depths (0-50m, 50-200m) by vertical towing using an opening-closing net (100cm diameter and 300 µm mesh size). The samplings were carried out at every one degree between 5° and 12°N (1998), between 5° and 11°N (1999) along the meridional lines of 131°30´ W. The net was lowered to the depth of interest from a stationary research vessel and towed upward to collect zooplankton at a speed of 25~30 m per minute. Zooplankton samples were transferred to 1-l sampling bottles and immediately fixed with neutralized formalin into the final concentration of 5%. Considering the characteristics of zooplankton such as diurnal vertical migration, all samplings were done during the nighttime. The volume filtered by the net was calculated from the readings of flow meter (Hydro-Bios Model 438-115). Zooplankton were identified to the genus level and enumerated under a microscope. The abundance of zooplankton at each station was expressed as the numbers/100 m3.

Nautilus Minerals is the world leader in exploration and development of deep ocean seafloor massive sulphide (SMS) resources. The company is currently focused on generating its resource pipeline in the Western Pacific and its first development project for recovery of high-grade copper, gold and silver mineralisation from its Solwara 1 site in the Bismarck Sea, Papua New Guinea. The Solwara 1 site is located at a water depth of 1,600 ? 1,800 meters. Over 150 SMS seafloor surface samples have been collected from chimney structures during dives made by remote operated vehicles (ROVs). In order to obtain an understanding of the sub-surface mineralisation, Nautilus carried out 4 drilling programs between 2006 and 2010 which allowed the calculation of a Canadian NI43-101 compliant resource estimate. The initial 2006 campaign was based on conventional offshore surface driven drill equipment. In conjunction with the subsea remote technology industry, Nautilus subsequently developed an ROV operated seafloor drill system with improved drill core recovery and efficiency. This technology was developed further with a 2010 - 2011 drill program to increase the available geological knowledge at Solwara 1 and adjacent prospects. his paper will provide an overview of Nautilus? SMS drilling requirements and recap the evolution of drilling technology and operations undertaken at Solwara 1 from 2006 to 2011. The paper will also discuss the potential of further developments in drilling techniques and equipment to increase or improve drilling depth, efficiency and data quality.

Phosphate deposits on the southeastern U.S. coastal plain have long been the major force in world phosphate markets. World markets continue to grow, but the role of U.S. resources is rapidly declining. This situation results from a complex interaction of economic, political, and environmental factors. Causes for this ongoing erosion of the U. S. market include 1) escalating costs, 2) changes in land-use patterns, 3) environmental pressures oh conventional mining techniques; 4) exhaustion of shallow, high-grade resources in Florida, and 5) increased, low-cost production in other countries throughout the world. In fact, some agencies and commodity personnel predict that the U.S. will become a net phosphate importer early in the next century. If this projection is correct, the U.S. industry must look towards major changes in the near future in order to continue to compete in the world market. One possible change includes development and application of unconventional mining techniques to cheaply recover vast 'new' potential resources in areas with lower land-use pressures. These 'new' resources include 1) deep phosphorites within major sediment basins of the southeastern coastal plain and 2) subsurface phosphorites on the continental shelf and within the U.S. EEZ. These latter resources include extensive deposits in Onslow Bay, N.C.; broad regions offshore of Savannah, Ga. and Cape Canaveral, Fla.; and the central portion of the west Florida shelf. Hydrothermal activity is well known from many locations on most mid-ocean ridges, however no hydrothermally mineralized area had yet been found at the ultraslow spreading southwest Indian Ridge up to October 98 when the Japanese RV Yokosuka with the submersible Shinkai 6500 investigated this area. A massive sulfide field was discovered near 27º51S / 63º56 E in the 11th segment west of the Rodriguez Triple Junction. The Free University of Berlin had joined this cruise and taken over the responsibility for the study of the respective sulfide mineralizations. Hydrothermal minerals were sampled during two dives at water depth of about 2940 m close to the summit of an axial volcanic ridge called Mount Jourdanne. There massive sulfides occur on the seafloor as small smooth mounds with an average area of about 5 m2. Their surfaces are weathered and have a reddish to brownish colour. In addition to these mound-like structures, small tube-like chimneys were observed. These chimneys rise approximately 30 to 40 cm above the floor and are less than 10 cm in diameter. No indications of hydrothermal fauna could be detected. All the hydrothermal features are spatially related to faults and smaller fissures controlled by an E-W trending graben system crossing the summit region of the submarine volcano. Such tectonized areas are generally considered to be ideal for hydrothermal activity because they may have both a magmatic heat source in the deeper underground and pathways for fluid circulation, respectively.

A chemical and geological study of beach samples from the Mexican North Pacific was undertaken in order to evaluate the chemical composition of the beach sediments and it s association to lithology, climate, topography and weathering. The North Pacific Mexican littoral is characterized by arid weather with wide coastal plains and three geological provinces. The sands from the area are mainly finer, well sorted and show high maturity because of the high wave regime and the high energy conditions produced by the California Current in the coastline. The provenance index reflects that the region has a source of deep seated rocks, now exposed and dissected. Factor analysis made using the chemical composition showed the samples can be differentiated by five factors: 1) SiO2, 2) Al2O3; 3) Cu; 4) Sr and P2O2 and 5) Na content. Samples located in the northof the study area showed the highest values of Fe2O3 (17.72%), TiO2 (2.43%), V (576 ppm) and Zn (141 ppm) associated to methamorphic rocks present in the area.

Lemkein seamount located in the west of the Kuwajleen Atoll of RMI is a relatively samll, simple-shaped, peaked type seamount with its base at 4,500 m and summit at 1,452 m water depths. Ferromanganese crusts were identified in the water depth range between 2,000 m and 2,500 m, and they were mostly observed on the northern slopes of the seamount. Among various substrate rocks, breccia occurred most commonly with crusts and formed the thickest crust layers. Average thickness of the Lemkein crusts was about 5 cm. Their chemical compositions were similar to other crusts found in the RMI area; Mn=25.82%, Fe=15.29%, Co=0.74%, Ni=0.56%. Lemkein crusts were characterized by their four distinctive internal layers; 1) Massive Layer 1; 2)Porous, Fe-stained or sediment infilled Layer 2; 3) Massive to slightly porous Layer 3; and, 4)Massive, Dense, Phosphotized, CFA veined Layer 4. Layers 1 and 2 were generally similar in composition, but highest Co concentrations were measured in Layer 1 while relatively higher concentrations of Al, Rb, Fe, and Ti were observed in Layer 2. Layer 3 showed higher concentrations of Ca and P than Layers 1 and 2. Based on the Co-chronography, the age of Layer 1 is 0¡?6 Ma (growth rate = 1.50 mm/Ma), Layer 2 is 6¡?15 Ma (1.75 mm/Ma), Layer 3 is 15¡?27Ma (1.76 mm/Ma), and Layer 4 is 27¡?45 Ma (2.06 mm/Ma). These preliminary results indicated that high Co contents in Layer 1 resulted from slow growth rates; Layer 2 was formed under relatively strong influence of high terrestrial input; and, Layer 3 was probably affected by a minor phosphatization event occurring in 15 Ma.

The occurrences of polymetallic minerals within the Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs) of many Pacific Island Countries (PICs) have been confirmed through marine scientific researches and seabed minerals exploration in the last forty years, and are increasingly being recognized by nations as a future potential source of revenue and economic development. For many of the smaller PICs, this may represent the only exploitable natural resource sector apart from fish. SOPAC (then under the CCOP/SOPAC) was actively involved with deep sea mineral exploration in many countries in the South Pacific between the 1970s and early 1980s that led to the discovery of a number of seabed mineral occurrences within the EEZs of these countries. In collaboration with SOPAC, a number of multinational consortia and national agencies were involved in this early stage of seabed mineral prospecting in the region. This was followed by a twenty-year (1985-2005) marine mineral prospecting in the Pacific through the collaborative effort of the Government of Japan and SOPAC as well as the Ridge 2000 program. Other mineral prospecting and marine scientific research initiatives have been conducted in recent years and the most notable one is the Nautilus Minerals advanced exploration in the Manus Basin in PNG. Based on the results of previous exploration, a number of countries in the region with moderate to high deep sea mineral resources potential are identified. Seafloor Massive Sulphide deposits have been confirmed in PNG, Tonga and Fiji while the Cook Islands and Kiribati have high manganese nodule resources potential in addition to significant occurrences of Cobalt-rich Crust within the EEZs of the Marshall Islands and the Federated States of Micronesia. Despite the recent surge in deep sea minerals interest and activity around the Pacific, specific policy, legislation and regulations necessary for the governance of deep sea mineral resources are lacking. Also lacking is the specific technical and human resources capacity essential to ensure that PICs are able to effectively manage these seabed resources. Consequently, SOPAC under the EU funded Deep-Sea Minerals (DSM) Project will work with Pacific ACP States to develop a regional regulatory framework from which they can develop their national frameworks for the sustainable management of their marine mineral resources. The work is of critical importance if PICs are to have effective environmental, fiscal and social management instruments in place for the exploration and exploitation of deep sea minerals that could support economic growth within the region as a whole.

The Gavia Autonomous Underwater Vehicle is a two-man portable AUV that is capable of performing seafloor surveys in water depths to 2000 meters. The standard survey sensor suite includes a dual frequency side scan sonar and high resolution digital camera. Additional survey sensors are currently being incorporated into the Gavia AUV, include Sub Bottom sonar, Swath Bathymetry sonar and Multi Beam sonar. The modular design of the Gavia AUV allows the end user to quickly incorporate new sensors including client developed propriety sensors.
