This paper offers a brief review of current literature pertaining to vacuum degassing or vacuum casting of steel as practiced in the U.S.A., Germany and the U.S.S.R. The advantages of vacuum degassing of large forging ingots, heavy section casting, for the conversion of rimming bessemer steels to killed steel and for the production of transformer steels are discussed. Operating pressures, reduction in gas contents and improvements in hydrogen segregation, steel cleanliness and mechanical properties, obtained with the various techniques, are described. The paper includes a description of an experimental vacuum stream-droplet degassing unit and some preliminary results obtained at the Physical Metallurgy Division Research Laboratories Department of Mines and Technical Surveys, Ottawa on laboratory steel melts. "Noranda has successfully developed and implemented two leading-edge mineral exploration technologies — hyperspectral remote sensing and 3-D seismic surveying. Airborne hyperspectral imaging provides detailed geological and mineralogical mapping capability at both a regional and project scale that facilitates improved selection of prospective terrain and an accelerated exploration cycle. Noranda, in partnership with Falconbridge, has licensed the exclusive use of the Earth Search Sciences Inc. (ESSI) Probe-1 hyperspectral scanners (128- channel, 0.43 µm to 2.5 µm spectral range) that are capable of mapping in excess of 3500 km2 per day at 10 m pixel resolution. The technology has been successfully deployed on four continents over a broad range of terrain from desert to boreal forest and the high Arctic.To augment the company’s deep search initiatives, Noranda has successfully modified and implemented existing 3-D seismic technology to help targeting massive sulphides located at depths ranging from 500 m to 2000 m. In the fall of 1998 and early 1999, Noranda completed an 18 km2, 3-D seismic program in eastern Canada by successfully drill testing acoustic impedance anomalies locating massive sulphides at depths in excess of 1100 m."

Real options valuation is an alternative net present value framework that is able to incorporate both management flexibility and dynamic project risks. In this paper, management is considering the development of a satellite low-grade zone while operations in a developed high-grade zone continue. If the lowgrade zone is developed prior to high-grade zone exhaustion, mine capacity must be expanded before additional production from the low-grade zone can be processed. This expansion can be avoided only if low-grade zone development is delayed until the high-grade zone is exhausted. The real option model presented here allows the development and capacity expansion decisions to be reconsidered on a discrete half-year basis. It delineates price regions, for given levels of high-grade zone reserves, in which it is optimal to develop the low-grade zone, defer low-grade zone development and abandon the mine irrevocably.

We investigate the relationship between corporate financial performance (CFP) and environmental and social performance (CSP) in a sample (n=165) of large, publicly traded U.S. mining and oil and gas firms. Using optimally scaled principal components analysis to generate aggregate measures of CSP strengths and concerns, we find higher concerns are related to higher volatility of unexpected earnings and discount rates. Furthermore, these earnings shocks are more likely to be negative as concerns increase. Decomposing this relationship shows that negative environmental performance dominates proactive environmental management as a driver of unexpected earnings, but proactive community efforts increase the magnitude of earnings shocks. We document some evidence of the strategic use of CSR, with those firms that have greater risk investing more proactively in CSR.

INTRODUCTION Eighteen years ago about half a dozen experienced prospectors moved from northern Ontario to northwest Manitoba to prospect 'greenstone' areas shown on geological maps of .parts of northern Manitoba prepared by J. B. Tyrrell, D. B. Dowling, and Wm. Mclnnes. Gold-bearing quartz was soon discovered by these men in this new field, and in succeeding years many more prospectors entered the district. A number of the pioneers are still prospecting, and since 1913 mineral deposits have been discovered each year in widely separated areas of the large district extending 150 miles eastward from the 102nd meridian and 60 miles north of latitude 54°30'. The majority of the discoveries, however, have been made near Schist, Elbow, Wekusko, and Kississing lakes. One hundred or more mineral occurrences of some merit are known, the main types being sulphide replacement bodies containing nickel-copper or copper-zinc and gold-bearing quartz veins. Some underground exploration or diamond drilling has been completed on 25 or more of the prospects. Up to the present, three ore-bodies, namely, Flin Flon, Sherritt-Gordon, and Mandy, have been proved. Of these, Flin Flon, the largest, is estimated to contain from 16,000,000 o 19,000,000 tons of copper-zinc ore carrying some gold, silver, and lead. Next in importance in regard to tonnage is Sherritt-Gordon, with a calculated reserve of nearly 5,250,000 tons of copper-zinc ore carrying less than $1.00 combined gold and silver.

"A new process is disclosed for the recovery of gold and/or silver values from activated carbon wherein they are adsorbed as cyanide complexes. A unique chemistry allows the new process to use mill process water containing an inexpensive, non-hazardous compound as the eluant. The new process has an elution period of 5 hours at 98°C. The gold in the eluant can be recovered by electrowinning or zinc precipitation. The new elution process is simple, reliable, and provides an eluted carbon that may not require thermal regeneration before reuse. Retrofitting the new process to existing processes such as Zadra, Anglo, and others will not require significant capital expenditures.IntroductionThe efficient and reliable elution process for gold/silver from activated carbon is a very important process in the gold mining industry. "Raman spectroscopy is used to quantify the extent of disorder in the carbonaceous matter associated with preg-robbing ores. Previous studies of Goldstrike ores showed that the height and width of the peaks for the “D” (disordered) and “G” (graphite) bands, the so-called “Raman ratio” had a strong correlation to the preg-robbing value (PRV) measured for various ore samples. A brief literature review on Raman spectroscopy as it applies to preg-robbing ores is presented. Further, recent studies, presented here, have shown no correlation between the Raman ratio and the PRV for a wide variety of ores. This suggests that the extent of organic carbon crystal disorder is not the main factor in determining preg-robbing characteristics.INTRODUCTION Valuable base metals, such as nickel, cobalt, molybdenum, vanadium and tungsten, are used in a wide range of important technological applications. The demand for many of these metals has increased significantly over the last few decades, driven especially by economic expansion in Asia generally and China in particular. This has led in turn to a large growth in the output of mines in order to satisfy this increasing demand, as shown by the data in Table 1 (USGS, 1994, 2014). These data reflect an even longer trend of growth of these metals, with nickel, for example, showing an average rate of 5.3% per year from 1980 until 2015 (International Nickel Study Group, 2017). This rapid and sustained rate of growth means that annual mine outputs for nickel, tungsten, molybdenum and vanadium have had to double roughly every 11 to 14 years, whilst cobalt mine output has had to double roughly every 7 years, over the period from 1994 until 2014. With the average working life of a nickel mine being between 17 and 22 years (Statista, 2017), this means that from the time a nickel mine opens until it closes, the industry needs to find the equivalent of another three or four mines of a similar output to satisfy this relentless growth in demand for the metal."

The gold district of northwestern Quebec, though it has attracted such widespread attention during the past year, is still in the prospect stage throughout, and one must preface any remarks about it with the plain statement that its capacity to produce gold commercially is still subject to proof. However, this proof may be forthcoming any day, and from widely separated localities. Consequently it is of interest to note some of the features of the region and of the prospects now being developed. First I shall note the relation of this mining development to the province of Quebec and to the Dominion; then will follow a brief resume of the known geological facts; and finally I shall describe briefly some of the more advanced prospects developed during the past twelve-month. Those that have followed closely the fortunes of the new gold-field will find little that is new in what follows, but it may serve a useful purpose for others by bringing together scattered items of information and presenting them as a whole. GOLD MINING AND AGRICULTURE First let us consider the gold belt in its relation to the province of Quebec. Apart from the world-renowned asbestos camp south of the St. Lawrence, it is the only mineral development of major importance the province has experienced. It is the first important development in the province's vast area of Precambrian rocks, most of which remains as yet totally unexplored and unprospected. The relative importance of this first mining camp in northern Quebec cannot as yet be gauged, but it is bound to stimulate an active interest in the other mineral-bearing areas now known to exist, and in the vast unexplored spaces.

A survey of 281 mineral exploration agreements examines the ratios among three ways that may be used to purchase an interest in a mineral property, viz: pay cash, pay shams and make future expenditures on the property. The dollar value of the future expenditures exceeds that of cash or shams by about nine times in most of the 110 agreements that contain cash-expenditure or share-expenditure components. Results suggest that cash and shams are treated about the same in terms of value. Buyers and sellers haw opposing priorities for the way that they prefer to purchase a mineral property. These opposing priorities should give rise to a perceived 50:50 balance between cash/share payment and future expenditures to satisfy the idealized situation described by most definitions of fair market value (FMV). This balance between cash/share payments and future expenditures appears to be rationalized in negotiations to a FMV when expenditures are nine times greater than cash and/or payments. On this basis, it is proposed that the FMV of a property may be determined by aggregating the dollar amount of the cash/share payments plus one-ninth the dollar value of future expenditures, as set forth in the respective purchase agreement, and proportionately applying such aggregate to full property value.

"In the present study, electrochemical measurements, especially cathodic potentiodynamic polarization (CPC) and cyclic potentiodynamic polarization (CPP), have been employed to study the kinetics of ferric reduction on chalcopyrite in aqueous Fe(II)Fe( III)H2SO4 solution at 90 °C and 110 °C. Results from the calculation of speciation in the above solution reveal that, at both 90 °C and 110 °C, the real Fe3+/Fe2+ ratio is much lower than the nominal ratio, which leads to smaller VALUES (for the reversible potential of the ferric/ferrous couple. Exchange current densities of the ferric/ferrous couple were obtained and are on the order of 106 10 5 A/cm2 a t 9 0 °C and 1 07 10 6 A/cm2 at 110 °C, respectively. The Tafel slopes from the CPP method are higher than those from the CPC method at both 90 °C and 110 °C. The transfer coefficients were about 0.360.59 at 90 °C and 0.370.65 at 110 °C. Based on the exchange current densities obtained, the rate constant kc was calculated. It was found that kc at 90 °C was slightly larger than at 110 °C, especially for the results obtained by the CPC method. The average rate constants are 862.17 cm/s for CPC and 65.30 cm/s for CPP at 90 °C, and 477.69 cm/s for CPC and 63.53 cm/s for CPP at 110 °C for nominal Fe3+/Fe2+ ratios ranging from 1:1 to 1000:1. INTRODUCTIONChalcopyrite is one of the most abundant copper-bearing minerals, accounting for approximately 70% of the world’s known copper reserves (Wang, 2005). Most of the currently proposed leaching processes are based on sulfuric acid with ferric ions and/or dissolved oxygen as oxidants. Some of these processes have been piloted in attempts to implement these technologies on an industrial scale, such as Activox (U.S. 5,232,491, 1993), Nenatech (U.S. 5,993,635, 1999), Dynatec (U.S. 5,730,776, 1998), AAC/UBC (U.S. 6,503,293, 2003), Total Pressure Oxidation (U.S. 5,698,170, 1997), CESL (U.S. 5,874,055, 1999) and Galvanox (U.S. 7,846,233, 2010).To date, much effort has been devoted to understanding the kinetics and mechanisms of the oxidative processes (Biegler & Horne, 1985; Córdoba, Muñoz, Blázquez, González, & Ballester, 2008, 2009; Ghahremaninezhad, Asselin, & Dixon, 2010; Hirato, Majima, & Awakura, 1987; Hiroyoshi, Kuroiwa, Miki, Tsunekawa, & Hirajima, 2004; Warren, Wadsworth, & El-raghy, 1982) or the cathode reduction reactions of chalcopyrite itself (Arce & González, 2002; Biegler & Swift, 1976; Biegler, 1977; Nava, González, Leinen, & Ramos-Barrado, 2008), by chemical or electrochemical methods. However, as the most important cathodic processes in chalcopyrite leaching systems, the cathodic reductions of ferric ions or dissolved oxygen are worth measuring due to their effects on the overall leaching rate, as predicted by mixed potential theory."

This paper presents a procedure to prepare input for the computerized pit design system at Iron Ore Company of Canada. The procedure is simple and requires very little training. Also, it is general enough to accept both bench (horizontal cross section) maps and section (vertical cross section) maps. The output of this procedure is data which represent blocks of ore and waste with dollar values based on mineral content. The ultimate pit design is presented in printer-generated graphs, with numbers indicating the depths of pit bottom walls. Roads are added manually by the engineer with the aid of other computer programs. Section maps and bench maps are also printed as part of the output of the ultimate pit design.

"Based on digital image correlation (DIC) method and self-developed code, the global strain field changing and failure properties of rock-like materials with pre-existing double flaws are experimentally studied under uniaxial compression. By theoretical analysis with linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM), the strain approach proves to be practicable to investigate cracking process. Thus, two types of process zone are defined to discuss the specimen’s coalescence evolution at different loading stages. Crack initiation, propagation, and coalescence is a process of zone development and nucleation. DIC strain field results are studied on a meso-level using a strain approach. In the shear coalescence mode, the SPZ (shear process zone) in a bridge area coalesces with each other, while the TPZ (tensile process zone) grows independently. In general, the paper tries to establish the link between microscopic mechanical mechanisms and macroscopic mechanical responses in flawed rock. Further research should be done to study the cracking process and its effect on rock strength in detail by the DIC method.INTRODUCTIONNatural rock contains discontinuities including pores, fractures, inclusions or other defects. The existence of these discontinuities in the rock can decrease the strength and stiffness of the rock and they are a source of initiation of new discontinuities which may in turn propagate and link with other cracks and further decrease the strength and the stiffness of the rock (Sagong & Bobet, 2002). Lots of theoretical, experimental and numerical researches have been done in studying crack initiation, propagation and coalescence in rocks (Hoek & Bieniawski, 1965; Kranz, 1983; Reyes & Einstein, 1991; Park & Bobet, 2009; Gonçalves & Einstein, 2013). But when it comes to multiple pre-flaws, the issue that how the preexisting flaws affect each other becomes complicated and uncertain. The stress field around the tips of flaw can either enhance the impact of single flaw or weaken it. According to the observations have been done before, it is found that the way and function in which these cracks propagate and coalescence depends on the geometric arrangements (Bobet, 1997; Bobet & Einstein, 1998; Wong & Chau, 2001)."

Gas and oil seeps have been known in Quebec for more than one hundred years. These occur in three main areas which contain sedimentary rocks with a total thickness estimated to vary from 6,000 to 20,000 feet. The strata in these areas are similar in many respects to those in producing areas of southwestern Ontario and the Appalachian basin, and the prospects for finding and developing commercial reserves of oil and gas in Quebec would therefore also appear to be favourable. Little of the exploratory drilling to date has been con-ducted in a systematic manner, and most of the drilling has utilized improper or inadequate equipment. Many wells have also failed to adequately test and fully evaluate the principal zones of interest. Relatively high drilling costs have hindered systematic exploration; however, with improved portable equipment, it is expected that future wells can be drilled with greater efficiency and at less cost. Most of the mineral rights in Quebec are held by the Provincial Government, and acreage can still be leased in large blocks on favourable terms.

"Geographic information systems (GIS) provide an efficient means for the recording, manipulation, revision, display and analysis of spatially referenced data. GIS are widely used at the exploration stage of mine development, and are increasingly used for reclamation planning. The ability of a GIS to perform spatial searches and query spatially referenced data make it a powerful tool for use at all stages of mine development. As the amount of data available for analysis increases, so does the power and flexibility of GIS as a planning tool.Starting from the exploration database, this paper describes how a GIS can be used for the development of mining plans based on topography, geology and mineralization information stored in a relational database. Planning decisions approaching the optimal can then be made for a wide range of parameters, including stockpile and waste dump locations, the location of potentially acid generating and neutralizing material for dump design, profitable and risk-controlled mine extraction sequencing, and haul road locations. This is made possible by the overlay and buffer analysis capabilities of a GIS which are explored and exploited to produce a continuous mine production planning program, as well as site remediation and reclamation using a successful case study. IntroductionGeographic information systems (GIS) are a relatively new tool in the mining industry. Although they have existed for a number of years, the potential of GIS for mine management and planning is only beginning to be investigated and exploited. The unique spatial capabilities of GIS make them particularly wellsuited for use in mining, where spatial information is fundamental to the processes of mineral exploration, mine development, and environmental reclamation. A number of potential applications for GIS in the mining industry have been identified, and they are widely used for exploration and reclamation. The use of a GIS as a platform for the development of mine planning routines and software remains an interesting, but as of yet unexplored, application of this technology."

Project Environmental Approval is a multi-faceted issue. From a mining perspective, it is a costly item because of avoidable time delay. The government perspective is that the approvals are a necessary part of meeting departmental requirements to ensure that the wellbeing of other uses of the environment is maintained. This paper outlines some of the problems inherent in the environmental approvals process and makes recommendations to both the proponent and government about improving the efficiency of the process.

IN every co al mine the hazard of fire in the underground workings is always present. This is a natural condition, because the mineral wrought and the supports normally used are themselves combustible and because underground fires may originate in many ways. The main causes of such fires are: (1) Open lights igniting gas, wood, or the coal itself. (2) Explosives igniting gas or coal. (3) Spontaneous combustion. (4) Electric sparks or short circuits igniting gas, wood, or coal. (5) Frictional heat igniting wood, coal, or oily material. (6) Explosions of gas or coal dust igniting wood or coal. The relative importance of these causes, and others less frequently met with, varies from district to district and depends to a great extent on the equipment and supplies used, on the training and discipline maintained among the workmen, and on the liability of the coal to heat spontaneously. It follows, therefore, that open lights should not be used and that, wherever there is the least possibility of methane being encountered, only locked safety lamps of an approved type should be allowed underground. It follows, also, that only 'permitted' explosives should be used and that the it use should be confined to conditions under which they are ?permitted?. Similarly, electric equipment should be of an approved type and all such stationary equipment should be housed in well-ventilated fireproof rooms. Such rooms, as well as entries to stables and oil houses, should be provided with doors which can be easily and tightly closed and which should be constructed of fireproof material.

"At the Falconbridge Limited, Canadian Nickel Division, Sudbury Operations, we investigated the ""NO NOISE"" ear muffs model NN3-F which is a Swedish product with foam-filled sealing rings (the Hellberg Standard Volume Hearing Protector). It is used extensively at Falconbridge mines in Sudbury.The research which was carried out in the four Falconbridge mines was conducted under three different headings: manufacturer's attenuation data (psychophysical method), clamping force and head size (bizygomatic diameter), and attenuation tests (physical methods) under working conditions.Manufacturers of hearing protectors claim their products offer noise reductions of 23 decibels (NRR) or more, but they fail to point out that this reduction is obtainable only under ideal conditions. The reality of attenuation under working conditions, as several studies have found, is quite different.Methods for using short measurements to determine the noise exposure index, and for controlling muff-wearing habits, were developed at the Elliot Lake Laboratory. Measurements taken at Falconbridge on ""NO NOISE"" ear muffs revealed that they have a practical attenuation of some IO to 13 decibels. It is important to note here that measurements also revealed that clamping force (thus attenuation) was in an inverse relationship with ear muff comfort. Measuring attenuation using noise dosimeters was a difficult job. Not a single surveyor would accept these measurements (physical method) for absolute accuracy. Apart from that, it was impossible to measure, in one shift, more than two work stations. Because of this, we sought a solution: measuring head size and clamping force in relation to actual attenuations.A detailed analysis of the relationship between attenuation and head size/clamping force was done at four mines. Standard deviation ellipses (standard error ellipses) for head size versus clamping force are in close agreement with measurements that were carried out. In order to measure clamping force an apparatus was constructed and a method for measuring suspension system durability is described in Appendices Band C of this report. At the same time we sought to reduce deterioration of ear muffs in mines as well as to put in place a system whereby attenuation can be controlled and improved. The clamping force apparatus can be operated automatically. The proposed control system is quick, simple and efficient . This system is equally applicable in small and large mining operations, and it can be totally automated and the data computerized for audit of the results. This control system is a new step in controlling ear muff attenuation in working environments.From these measurements of NN3-F ""NO NOISE"" muffs it can be concluded that ear muffs are not the total solution to protect the worker from noise.As the results were evaluated folio wing measurement, Falconbridge switched from the NN3-F ""NO NOISE"" muffs to approximately 90% Mark V ""NO NOISE"" muffs and 10% Mark V MSA muffs. These new muffs showed much better head size versus clamping force relationship and can be expected to produce 14 dBA or better attenuation of noise. Copper-15 Nickel-8 Tin alloy is a relatively modern material, having been discovered in the 1970’s. It has complexities with casting, hot working and interdependent solid state phase transformations. A key to the high reliability manufacture of wrought rods, bars, plates and tube is the casting technology, which limits segregation, promotes microstructural uniformity and enables hot working. The EquaCast® continuous casting process has enabled the production of a broadening variety of wrought forms with typical yield strengths ranging from 100 to 180 ksi (690 to 1241 MPa) depending on size, shape and temper. This paper reviews the characteristics of wrought Copper-15 Nickel-8 Tin products which have registration in AMS specifications (4596 and 4597) and MMPDS-04 (CN-1) for use in aircraft. The design limits, microstructures, fracture characteristics and tribological behavior will be examined.
