It is always necessary to expand existing buildings, so that they could meet the growing societal needs. Compared with demolishing them and then constructing new ones, the expansion of existing buildings could not only reduce project cost, but also save the use of energy and raw materials in projects. Therefore, it is widely adopted in most under-developed countries. However, the expansion of existing buildings is not an easy task. It has been involved with a lot of issues in defining the scope of work, planning landscape, managing construction activities, etc. This paper investigates the potential challenges in expanding existing buildings. The project of expanding the Al-Agoza Hospital, one of the biggest and oldest hospitals in Cairo, Egypt, is selected as a case study. In the case study, the project documents have been carefully reviewed. The project engineers and the health-care professionals working in the hospital have been interviewed. This way, the point of views from the owner, the architect/engineer, and the contractor have been taken into account. Several lessons are learned through the discussion with these people. The results from this paper are expected to provide pieces of useful advice and suggestion for the expansion of existing buildings in the future.

"It is frequently necessary to excavate a tunnel for Civil Engineering purposes, or wells for petroleum exploitation, in laminated rock mass like schists or phyllites or in highly foliated gneisses. The determination of the pre-existing in situ stresses is essential, in order to assure the stability of these excavations. In most cases, the pre-existing triaxial stress field is arbitrary in relation to the tunnel or well axis. For these rock masses the concept of Generalised Plane Strain can be correctly utilized.There are closed form solutions for the calculation of stresses in anisotropic rock masses under Generalised Plane Strain conditions (Lehknitskii, 1981 and Hong , 1994). Based on these analytical solutions, established for the cases of Generalised Plane Strain, a synthetic problem will be formulated: the theoretical in situ stress tensor acting on this rock mass will be determined, with the aid of Bayesian Inverse Problem Techniques, as developed by de Mello Franco (2009). Additionally, the reliability of results obtained will be evaluated, in accordance with the research performed by this author. INTRODUCTIONThe Inverse Problem Technique, as developed in the paper, is based on the definitions and concepts obtained from the current literature and used for the solution of Inverse Problems, but the innovation to be presented is the utilisation of Bayesian Techniques and the determination of the reliability of the results obtained. This will be shown in a synthetic example where the determination of the in situ stress tensor, from strain measurements in a drill hole is supposedly performed. It is assumed that this drill has its axis arbitrarily placed in relation to the rock mass. Generalised Plane Strain conditions will hold for use with problem. The equations of Beltrami – Mitchel, in agreement to Lekhnitskii (1981) and Ong (1994), will be used in this synthetic case, for calculating strains, hypothetically measured in the hole before the final excavations. Finally a synthetic example for the determination of the in situ stress in a fully anisotropic rock mass, based on Bayesian Techniques and its reliability, developed in de Mello Franco (2009) is presented."

"The purpose of this paper is to introduce to the minerals processing marketplace a viable alternative to conventional mechanical agitation and pachuca airlift agitation. What follows is a brief introduction to the Atara Corporation and the fundamentals of how an Atara ""cannon"" mixer operates. The main body of the paper is concerned with the results of a study to evaluate the cannon mixer for a gold cvanide leach application. A brief summary of research and testing for other metallurgical applications is also presented.1. 1 THE COMPANYThe Atara Corporation is a privately owned Canadian company, headquarted in Dorval, Quebec. Its subsidiary, Atara Incorporated, located in Paramus, New Jersey services the municipal wastewater treatment market in the United States. Dorval focuses on industrial mixing applications in Canada and the US. The Atara Corporation provides design, engineering and specifications of agitators for mineral land other) processing applications. Fabrication of mixers is pursued in either Canada or the US, depending on the ultimate destination.Although Atara and its unique static in-tank mixer are relative newcomers to the mining industry, the cannon mixer has demonstrated its value over the past 20 years in municipal wastewater treatment services. In the past four years the Atara unit has been developed for industrial applications; the bulk of the development work has been for metallurgical applications. To-date the cannon mixer has been evaluated for mixing slurries in the following applications: nickel-copper concentrate storage, copper concentrate storage, coal slurry storage, gold cyanide leaching, uranium acid leaching, silver leaching and zinc acid leaching. ABSTRACT Solvent extraction is used in many acid leach uranium circuits to upgrade and purify the uranium-bearing solution prior to final product precipitation. A number of strip options are available to recover the uranium from the loaded organic. This paper compares seven of these options on the basis of typical capital and operating costs for the solvent extraction circuit and downstream uranium processing and also considers other related issues. The aim is to provide an objective comparative assessment of these options that could be used as a qualitative guide in process selection or improvement.

"Effective control of metallurgy by manual adjustment of cell levels is common flotation practice. With an on-stream XRF analyzer interfaced to a process control computer it is possible to program the computer to carry out this function automatically. This paper describes the development and implementation of closed loop control of the concentrate and tailing grades at the Clarabelle Mill of the International Nickel Company of Canada, Limited, The XRF analyzer was used as the sensor, cell level as the control and the computer as the controller.IntroductionThe International Nickel Company of Canada, Limited recently brought on-stream Clarabelle Mill having a rated capacity of 35,000 tons per day. The plant was required to increase milling capacity in the Sudbury area by 9,000 tons per day and to improve milling efficiencies by replacing the obsolete crushing and grinding equipment at the Copper Cliff Mill. This represents the fourth mill built since 1959 and incorporates the latest thinking in a continuing evolution of instrumentation and control concepts. Table 1 illustrates control progress at Inco since 1959.In 1967 Frood-Stobie Mill came on-stream incorporating a central control room, an on-stream analyzer, a data gathering computer, and a significant change in instrumentation from direct-contacted pneumatic to miniature electronic. The computer successfully controls the analyzer but has very limited process control capability. Based on this experience a process control computer system was installed at Clarabelle Mill with the objective of carrying out extensive supervisory control and a limited amount of direct digital control."

The operation of Falconbridge's Sudbury nickel smelter has undergone significant change since the production was consolidated to a single electric furnace in 1994. In the late 1990's a capital program of about $100 MM (Cdn) was undertaken to expand and modernize the smelter. This project, known as Smelter 2000, was mainly driven by the need to process the new concentrate produced at Falconbridge's Raglan operation in northern Quebec. Included in the scope of the project was the installation of dry concentrate handling facilities, modifications to the roaster feed preparation system, installation of a matte granulation system and modification of one of the converters. Improvements to in-plant hygiene were also an important part of the Smelter 2000 project. Over the past 5 years much has been learned about the challenges in treating two significantly different concentrates. More recently, the introduction of a third concentrate from Falconbridge's new Montcalm operation near Timmins, Ontario has added another dimension to the operation. This paper will describe how the main challenges from the past 7 years have been overcome and discuss the path forward for the Sudbury Smelter Business Unit.

"In 1998, the Iron Ore Company of Canada initiated an aggressive program to improve the performance of its Carol Lake Concentrator located in Labrador City, Newfoundland. This program was termed the Concentrator Upgrade Program. The Concentrator Upgrade Program was a group of initiatives developed with the common goal of improving the overall process and operations of the IOCC Carol Lake Concentrator. The main goal of the program was to increase the annual production capacity of the concentrator from 18.0 million tomes to 21.6 million tomes. This gain in capacity was to be done mainly through improvements in process iron recovery. The target iron recovery value was 80+% versus a historical value of 70%. This improvement in iron recovery would translate to a natural weight recovery improvement from 44% to 50%.The Concentrator Upgrade Program provided the first opportunity in 30 years to make fimdamental changes to the concentrator flowsheet. To accomplish this, several pilot plants were built to evaluate new circuits. AAer 2 years, a new flowsheet was selected for the primary gravity separation circuit and the magnetite circuit. The centrepiece of the new flowsheet was the introduction of Hindered Settling Separators to the metallurgical process.The Concentrator Upgrade Program has since proceeded into detailed engineering and, as of February 2001, construction. The first one of IOCC’s 3 primary AG Mills (Mill 11) has been converted to the new flowsheet at the time of writing and is in the throes of commissioning. This paper will review the flowsheet development program in the pilot plant for the gravity separation circuit and examine the overall benefits to the operation of the IOCC Carol Lake Concentrator."

"In regular CIL circuits, activated carbon is used for two purposes: avoiding solid/liquid separation after cyanide leaching, and minimizing gold losses in the tails. The carbon distribution and gold profiles in the successive CIL stages are operating variables, not objectives. When the CIL feed contains a preg robbing constituent however, such as native carbon, there will be competition for gold cyanide and this conflicts with minimizing of losses of gold to CIL tails. This paper examines some of the limitations of activated carbon in CIL circuits handling preg robbing Carlin Trend ores.INTRODUCTION Carbon-In-Leach (CIL) has been a great success treating regular gold ores, but the technology is still challenged by preg robbing feedstocks. Little information is available in the gold milling literature on CIL gold extraction from “free” milling gold ores which are preg robbing, or on autoclave discharge (POX’ed) slurries of double refractory ores. Neither feedstock is readily available for experimentation. No literature reference could be found describing deliberate modifications to CIL operations or CIL circuits due to the presence of two types of carbon: “native” and activated. There is some literature on the gold cyanide adsorption activity of native carbons (Schmitz, Duyvesteyn, Johnson, Enloe & McMullen, 2001). Various tests have been devised to measure this activity, commensurate with CIP and CIL practices (Tretbar, Arehart & Graves). In this paper, the term “native” carbon indicates (severely) preg robbing carbonaceous materials found in gold ores. There is considerable literature on the gold cyanide adsorption activity of man-made “activated carbons”. Various tests have been devised to measure this activity, commensurate with CIP and CIL practices. These tests are comparative, i.e. results relate to a standard carbon and depend on the test methodology and carbon history. The test results are equilibrium oriented, hence of limited value to CIL circuit designers or plant operators handling preg robbing solids; in CIL circuits most carbons are not loaded to capacity. Information on gold cyanide adsorption and desorption kinetics might be more relevant and that is one subject explored in this paper."

"1.0 INTRODUCTIONThe uranium industry started in Canada with the reopening of the gravity concentrator at Eldorado's Port Radium mine in the North West Territories in 1942. In 1948, uranium exploration and processing was opened to the private sector, and the Federal government offered special pricing incentives to the industry. Eldorado explored the Lake Athabaska deposits in northern Saskatchewan, and in 1953 opened the Beaverlodge mine. Other mines in the area soon followed. In 1953 also, the deposits in the Blind River - Elliot Lake area and in the Bancroft area of Ontario were discovered. Mines and mills were quickly developed in these areas.Canadian uranium production peaked at 15,900 short tons of U3O8 in 1959. In that year, uranium exports at $300,000,000 exceeded those of all other minerals in value. On October 1, 1959, Canadian uranium operations employed 13,900 people.Up to 1956, it was a seller's market. By 1958, world production of uranium was far ahead of requirements. Accordingly, in November of 1959, the USAEC announced it would not renew it's options for continued delivery of uranium from Canadian mines. This led to the ""stretchout"" of existing uranium contracts, and many mines were shut down (see Table 1) .In the early 1970's, a commercial uranium market seemed to be developing. In Ontario, at Elliot Lake and Bancroft, mines reopened. But competition was coming from the Athabaska basin of Saskatchewan. Currently it is these high grade, open pit deposits of northern Saskatchewan which are in the forefront of Canadian uranium developments. Canadian developments since 1942 reflect the political and market forces, as well as metallurgical progress and changes in environmental standards. This paper attempts to show these process changes in broad perspective."

"Under certain conditions useful gravity information of a reconnaissance nature can be obtained with-out measuring elevations by spirit level surveys on the ground. Gravity surveys can become part of a practical exploration program where high cost and slow progress previously hindered their utility. The advantages of the new elevation procedures are realized mainly in remote areas, in areas where ground transportation is slow and difficult and on surveys where the station spacing is large in comparison with the distance of the average optimum level shot. To utilize the advantages, transportation by helicopter or light plane is usually necessary. Methods of obtaining elevation control without leveling include: barometric altimeter survey; photogram-metric -APR spot determinations; methods involving the measurement of gravity gradients. The accuracies of these methods have been tested and compared with the normal accuracy of level surveys. It is felt that each method has its place in reconnaissance gravity work, particularly in the open areas of Northern Canada."

"The application of telerobotics to mining is currently being introduced into production systems around the world. Mining companies in Canada, Sweden, South Africa, and Australia have tended to lead the international charge to this form of technology for mining. While this introduction is taking place, a few basic questions have yet to be answered. How many machines can a single operator run? How many types of machines can a single operator run?A Canadian Research Chair in Robotics and Mine Automation has been established at Laurentian University to investigate these questions and many more through a series of experiments in a telerobotics laboratory that connects Laurentian teleoperation workstations to model mining machines at Cambrian College’s eDome. The laboratory supports many experiments allowing researchers to physically run multiple robot scenarios differing the numbers and types of machines at one quarter scale. Further experiments are being designed to investigate the potential for managing time delays in telerobotics. This paper describes the laboratory, experiments, and some preliminary results."

"The development of means to maximize the selectivity between galena and sphalerite in lead zinc ores is extremely important to the lead-zinc industry. Two challenging studies recently undertaken by Cominco will be reviewed. The first required an unusually fine grind to achieve liberation between galena and sphalerite. The second contained partially altered galena which resulted in unusual early activation of sphalerite under normal flotation conditions. Means by which lead and zinc separation were optimized in these two ores will be discussed.There are two important factors in the separation of minerals by froth flotation: particle size distribution (grind) and pulp chemistry. Pulp chemistry includes a number of factors including pH, Eh, collector type and concentration, inorganic depressants, organic depressants and activators.Grind is important for two reasons. A sufficiently fine grind is required to optimize liberation. However, if the mineral dissemination is too fine, mineral selectivity in the flotation process is impaired. Due to the hydrodynamic constraints of conventional mechanical flotation cells, flotation works best over the single decade size range between 10 and 100 microns. The majority of new ores treated by Cominco until relatively recently were comparatively simple. The major factor in their treatment was defining optimum grind size. Accordingly, the focus within mineral processing at Cominco was on grind and supporting liberation studies. The relationships between grind, liberation and flotation response are intuitively easy to understand. An idealized relationship is shown in the first figure."

Underground tests of slusher cables at first might seem to be quite simple and inexpensive. They do, however, take a long time and give results that may be ambiguous and unreliable. Also, because underground test conditions are not exactly duplicable, tests carried out at different times or in different mines could not be compared. An attempt was made to develop a laboratory test method that would provide for all factors affecting slusher cable performance underground in such a way as to make it possible to achieve comparable results from different series of tests by exactly duplicating test conditions. Such a method should also make it possible to vary individual factors systematically in order to give a proper assessment of the effect of changing conditions on cable performance. A set of tests, comparing the same two types of cable both underground and in the laboratory, is described. The mineralogy of the feed, concentrates and tailings from the Heath Steele mill in New Brunswick was studied in detail to determine the liberation and recoveries of the major ore minerals, and to characterize the occurrence and distribution of the trace elements. The ore milled during August 1977 contained an average of 4.34 wt % Zn, 1.25 wt % Cu, 1.64 wt % Pb and 90 gr/ton Ag. The main trace elements in the ore are silver, cadmium, indium, cobalt, antimony, bismuth, arsenic, mercury, tin and gold. Silver is carried in solid solution in tetrahedrite-tennantlte, galena, Ag-Sb sulfosalts and Pb-Bi-Sb sulfosalts. Approximately half of the silver is recovered in the lead and copper concentrates and the remainder is lost in the tailings and Zn concentrate. As the major silver-bearing minerals also contain Sb and Bi, recovering silver by ore dressing would involve recovering elements that are troublesome in extraction metallurgy. Cadmium and most of the indium and mercury occur in solid solution in sphalerite and consequently are recovered in the zinc concentrate. Some indium is also recovered in the copper concentrate in a second unidentified indium-bearing mineral. Cobalt and arsenic occur principally in arsenopyrite, cobaltite, a Co-Fe sulfarsenide, pyrite and pyrrhotite, and follow these minerals into the tailings. Recovery of the valuable element cobalt, therefore, would involve recovering the environmentally hazardous element arsenic. Most of the tin and gold report to tailings. The ore was ground to about 80% minus 270 mesh. At this grind, 71 wt % of the sphalerite, 66 wt % of the chalcopyrite and 59 wt % of the galena were liberated. Recoveries of free sphalerite, free chalcopyrite and free galena in the Zn, Cu and Pb concentrates were 85 wt %, 76 wt % and 80 wt %, respectively; recoveries of unliberated sphalerite, unliberated chalcopyrite and unliberated galena in the respective Zn, Cu and Pb concentrates were 48 wt %, 5 wt % and 7 wt %. Some of the unliberated sphalerite and chalcopyrite grains in the tailings are large and would have been liberated at a finer grind.

"Automatic flotation control in varying degrees of sophistication is practiced at a number of concentrators throughout the world. Practically, the variable conditions in the flotation circuit and the difficulty in maintaining accurate instrumentation information all add to the complexity of automatic control.Further development at the Kidd Creek concentrator has resulted in a 3075 mtpd copper flotation circuit capable of running twenty-four hours a day under the direct control of an optimizing supervisory computer.Three main streams, continuously monitored by an XRF analyser, supply circuit information to the optimizing computer. Circuit efficiency calculations (from smelter contract terms) and target setpoints allow the computer to determine the economic optimum direction to move the circuit based on the grade/recovery relationship. Circuit manipulation is accomplished by precise pumping of collector and frother reaqents together with accurate control of flotation bank pulp levels. The former uses computer controlled diaphragm pumps and the latter is achieved by control loops utilizing a float type level transmitter, variable position dart plugs and a process computer working to setpoints determined by the optimizing computer.The development of a fully automated flotation circuit is by no means complete, but increased knowledge and major hardware improvements have allowed its progression to a higher level of sophistication."

"This paper reviews the chemistry involved in the recovery of gold from cyanide solution with anion-exchange resins, and also discusses the most critical aspects of the engineering of an effective resin-in-pulp (RIP) process. As far as the chemistry is concerned, the conclusions reached by a great many researchers, as well as the performance of the only operating RIP plant in the Western World, at the Golden Jubilee Mine in South Africa, support the view that the process is technically viable and, in many cases, could prove to be more attractive economically than alternative processes such as zinc cementation and carbon-in-pulp (CIP). On the engineering side, there is still a need for further development before larger scale ( > 50,000 tpm) RIP plants can be designed, built and operated with confidence. However, the experiences gained during nearly 3 years of operation of the Golden Jublee RIP plant indicate that the process can be engineered with confidence for smaller operations ( < 50,000 tpm), and this will probably be the scope of application of the first-generation RIP plants. INTRODUCTIONThe use of anion-exchange resins in gold processing has, for a number of years, been proposed as an alternative to more conventional processes such as zinc cementation and carbon adsorption, and detailed research programs that have been carried out at a number of laboratories have demonstrated the technical viability of the process. The past decade has witnessed a rapid increase in the number and variety of uses found for internal combustion engines in mining operations. Gasoline engines are now widely used for operating core drills, pumps, compressors, small hoists, switching locomotives, tractors, boats, and other equipment. The heavy-oil engine is employed for operating compressors, generators, shovels, ore-milling machinery, and- in the iron, copper, and coal districts- in connection with that&apos; latest newcomer in modern railroading, the oil-electric locomotive. Each of these applications could well form a subject for a lengthy treatise in itself. This paper, however, will be confined to a discussion of some of the features of internal combustion engines as applied to mine compressing plants and mill drive. Perhaps at no time in the history of mining in Canada has the search for new mines been more vigorously carried on, more old properties rejuvenated, or more remote districts exploited than during the past three years. The mine operator of today has a far wider range of equipment and facilities at his disposal than had the pioneers of Rossland, Cobalt, or Porcupine. Each year now witnesses the hinterland driven farther and farther back as improved forms of transportation, machinery, and methods make possible the exploration of properties once considered too inaccessible to warrant serious attention. Howey, Sherritt-Gordon, Callinan-Flin Flon, Jackson-Manion, Picard Gold Mines, and a number of properties in British Columbia, afford excellent examples of work carried out on an extensive scale miles from a railway, or in comparatively inaccessible mountain regions.

THE Pembina oil field is in west-central Alberta, about 88 miles west-southwest of Edmonton. The field, about 35 miles long by 85 miles wide, is the largest in Canada in areal extent, in the amount of oil in place and in the current producing rate. The discovery well was completed in the middle of 1953. The field has grown until its present area is 369,820 acres. There are 74 working interest owners in the field. Early in the producing history of the Pembina field a committee of operators was formed on a permanent basis. The Pembina Operators' Committee has established a permanent staff, which compiles and distributes pertinent field information on a regular basis to all participants. A program to provide technical in-formation on the use of fuels in pyro-metallurgical processes, from the Canadian fuel viewpoint, was initiated about five years ago by a Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy liaison grou1> composed of members from the Coal Research Committee of the Coal Division and the Iron and Steel Committee of the Metallurgy Division.
