"The Acheson D-3 Pool was discovered in August 1950, and contains 88 producing oil wells on 40 acre spacing. Initial oil-in-place was 118 million stock tank barrels and initial well potentials averaged 2,000 barrels per day.In early 1956 studies of hydraulic interference between the Acheson and Leduc D-3 Pools were conducted on the Carter Petroleum Reservoir Analyzer. These studies indicated that the natural water drive to Acheson would be incapable of replacing reasonable withdrawal rates over the life of the pool. To avoid shrinkage losses a scheme of pressure maintenance by water• injection was therefore instituted in March 1957.This pressure maintenance scheme is notable because pressure is being effectively maintained by high volume injection through one well located on the flank of the pool. Close control on reservoir behaviour is maintained by regular bottom-hole pres-sure surveys and observation of water cuts on producing wells. No evidence of pressure gradients or channelling of the injected water has been observed to date, and the water-oil contact has remained level over the whole field. It is possible to control the average reservoir pressure within very close limits by varying the rate of fresh water injection.Ultimate recovery estimated from the rise of the oil-water contact and calculated water influx to December 31, 1958, is 335 barrels per acre foot, or a total of 91.4 million barrels from the pool. This compares to 217 barrels Per acre foot or a total of 59.4 million barrels indicated from laboratory test data."

The Alimak mining method was introduced at the David Bell mine in 1998 to extract an otherwise uneconomic and inaccessible reserve. The success associated with the extraction of these reserves led to major expansion of the method. To date, results have been extremely positive in terms of grade control, reduced dilution, stope recoveries, productivities and mining costs. It is hoped that through further development of the method at David Bell mine we will continue to see positive results in these areas and be able to increase mineable reserves to include proven resources that do not currently meet the criteria of our current stoping plan.

"Good morning gentlemen. I am very pleased to have this opportunity to tell you a few of the things that happen within a completely unrelated activity, the electroplating industry, except that it does consume metals and has some slight similarity of problems so far as cyanide is concerned.First, just a few general terms about the industry. It is a relatively unsophisticated industry technically, and in many instances there are serious problems in obtaining staff that can operate the various systems that are currently available for destroying cyanide or precipitating metals.I would suggest to you that if you are investigating any system that you consider very seriously the personnel that are actually going to run it. The installation people; probably have some idea what it is all about but the operators must be chosen for their ability and not because they just happen to be available.We perhaps have another area in common. There is very little money for capital expenditures that produce no immediate return or even eventual return on the investment.The industry is largely made up of ""Jobbers"" who are strictly electroplating. There is another group in which the electroplating is captive as in large companions where it is a convenience operation. Also there are specialists, who do other things besides plating but it is a very major part of their operation. This applies to the automotive parts industry.Cyanide applications in the plating industry will be for copper, zinc, cadmium, silver, brass, and gold. Cyanide waste solutions come from those solutions adhering to the plated parts, and from the occasional discharge of the plating bath solutions. Also, in a related industry, the heat treating people with cyanide case hardening have some high concentrations of cyanide to dispose of. Concentrations of cyanide that we treat are 2500 parts per million or higher especially in wastes from heat treating. Solution volumes might be as low as 100 gallons per hour in a well run, carefully operated rinsing system. It may be as high as 3000 gallons per hour where dilution occurs."

"General *The mining experiences of the coal mining industry in Western Canada have been extremely varied, with the mining companies having to adjust their operations or fail due to the harsh economy of the country in the first part of the century. The bituminous or mountain mines had the railways as main consumers with, at times, optimism that potential steel producers would require metallurgical coal. The prairie and foothills mines mainly provided household fuels, with the fine coal sold to local thermal power plants at discounted prices. In practically all cases fuel competition was very keen, and the less successful mines ceased operations in short-time spans. Knowledge of the parameters that governed the success or failures of the past coal operations should be of value to the present and future mining companies. The initial coal mines were small and were started to supply local demand. These mines had little in the way of capital machinery, engineering, or transportation equipment; therefore the mining methods and mine plans were very simple. The first industrial-sized mines imported most of their management and mining methods from other mining areas, mainly Great Britain. It took time to change the bias of management and mining methods to the requirements of strata characteristics, with rapid closure to those mines that were slow to adapt working methods. The main markets for coal were for household fuel, thermal power plants and railways, with very few other industrial markets developed. The economy of the period was harsh and cyclic and the coal mines were affected more than most industries by these boom and bust periods. It led to the survival of the fittest or the most efficient. Due to the economy, mechanization was introduced to the mines very slowly, with the inability to sell coal fines at a profit being another reason for the delay. Manual labour with hand tools was the main means of production. The work was heavy and arduous, and the pay was based on contract coal tonnage; therefore both men and management paid close attention to details so that nonessential work could be eliminated. Mine openings were dimensioned so that coal could be loaded easily by hand and support requirements were kept to the minimum. Transporting and handling the timber supports required heavy labour; thus the most efficient dimensions were chosen to suit the strata. On the other hand, during the main production seasons the mines tried to make the strata stress work for them so that the pressure was kept on the coal face to keep the coal loose while the strata, a short distance back, was induced to cave to minimize the abutment stresses. This caused mining to be an art, using skills developed by experience with the strata. This led to the development of efficient mine layouts with the openings dimensioned to the strength of the strata and the type of support available. The lack of capital and mechanization, and the manual labour, induced the mines to correlate their service and haulage systems with their mining methods. This caused many innovations that proved very practical."

ABSTRACT: A prototype test dipper (at 1/20th volume and a geometric operating scale of 2.85) was compared during field trials against a conventional dipper with the same tare weight using the same test shovel. Both dippers followed similar dig trajectories, invoked by the shovel operator. A Microsoft® Visual Basic-embedded spreadsheet was used to interpret qualitative visual and quantitative numerical loading data collected on the hoist and crowd dig response. Overall the concept dipper, even with a 50% greater capacity, provided indications of a smoother dig cycle with lower peak hoist loading events and a lower energy per unit excavated.

"Techniques were developed to determine the oxygen demand of sulphide ore pulps in the laboratory and in concentrators. The effect of variables which influence oxygen demand was studied, and it is shown that the oxygen demand is a measure of the degree of oxidation of the sulphide surfaces. It is suggested that in investigating the significance of oxygen in flotation, the oxygen demand of the pulp is a more suitable parameter than the dissolved oxygen content.Oxygen demand measurements are being carried out with a view to determining the effect of aeration on mill metallurgy and devising improved methods of predicting aeration requirements of sulphide ores.The importance of pulp oxidation in the flotation of massive sulphide ores has long been recognized. At the Noranda concentrator, chalcopyrite could not be floated satisfactorily without a pre-flotation aeration step because the necessary dissolved oxygen was consumed by the large amount of pyrrhotite in the ore. With aeration, pyrrhotite and pyrite were depressed by surface •oxidization, and the resulting thiosulphate level in solution gave a good indication of the end of useful aeration. 1'he present study was prompted by the need to find an alternative criterion for cases where recycled mill water may contain a relatively high concentration of thiosulphate. Preliminary experiments suggested that the rate of oxygen uptake by the pulp -its oxygen demand -might be a practical measure of the end point of aeration as well as a significant parameter in the flotation of massive sulphide ores.Although it has long been realized that oxygen is an important variable in flotation, analytical difficulties precluded detailed plant investigations. Measurements of' dissolved oxygen in mill pulps were first reported by Ralston(i) in 1929. A titration method was used, and because of the delay occasioned by the preparation of clear solution samples, the values obtained were believed to be low. It was quite evident, however, that pulps in the grinding circuit had a lower oxygen content than in flotation. More recently, Woodcock(2,3) used a polarographic probe to carry out oxygen surveys in six Australian concentrators and he generally observed a similar pattern. A large number of other solution parameters were monitored, such as pH, redox potential, reducing power, and reagent and metal concentrations, with the aim of detecting correlations among the measured variables. "Loss of coal fines in reject slurries limits the yield of coal cleaning operations. Difficulties in handling fines also limit the extent of physical cleaning in treating coals with finely-disseminated impurities. Selective oil agglomeration allows even extreme fines to be processed and offers some novel approaches for coal cleaning and utilization.The oil agglomeration process for the recovery and beneficiation of fine and ultrafine coal has now been commercialized by the Chemical Engineering Section/Chemistry Division of the National Research Council (NRC). This paper describes these activities to apply oil agglomeration and related fine coal technologies on an industrial scale. Pilot plant and large scale results are described, as well as aspects of agglomerate utilization in both wet and dry form."

"While pipeline hydrotransport is often the most economical way to transport large volumes of mineral concentrate, tailings, or fine ore slurry over long distances, it is in mountainous terrain that pipelining becomes particularly attractive. These areas are often remote, with limited existing infrastructure and few potential users willing to share in the cost of new infrastructure. The rugged terrain makes the construction of railways or roads suitable for haul trucks difficult and expensive. The elevation difference between the mine and the terminal means that the empty trains or haul trucks need to return up-hill, resulting in high fuel costs. With pipelines, this elevation difference may reduce or even eliminate the need for pumping. As a result, numerous pipelines have been built, or are being considered, in mountainous regions around the world including: Tasmania, New Guinea, China, Madagascar, the Rockies of North America, and the Andes of South America. However, there are technical difficulties that need to be overcome in the design and operation of mountain pipelines that do not affect pipelines on more level terrain. This presentation reviews some of these difficulties and methods used to overcome them.INTRODUCTIONPipeline transport of solid-liquid slurry (“hydrotransport”) is an important and cost-effective means of transporting large volumes of solids over long distances, especially from a single supplier to a single user (e.g., a concentrator to a port, a concentrator to a tailings dam, or a coal mine to a power plant). Pipelines are generally found to be more economically attractive than alternate transportation methods (e.g. trucking, rail, conveyors, shipping, or some combination) over the life of a project (Aude et al. 1974).Hydrotransport systems have been built in a variety of terrains, but it is in mountainous regions that pipelining becomes particularly attractive. These regions are often remote and generally do not have existing transportation infrastructure (roads, railways, navigable rivers). There are few potential users (e.g., farmers, other mines, forestry companies, etc.) who may be willing to share in the cost of new infrastructure. The rugged terrain makes the construction and maintenance of railways or all weather roads suitable for large haul trucks difficult and expensive. Mines tend to be higher than the receiving terminal (e.g. a port). This means that the empty trains or haul trucks need to return up-hill, resulting in high fuel costs. "The Goldex mining and milling complex is operated by Agnico-Eagle Mines Ltd. and is located in the Abitibi greenstone belt of Northwest Quebec, Canada. The mill operates presently at a throughput of 8,250 tpd with gold grade varying between 1.8 and 2.2 g/t. The ore is very high in gravity recoverable gold (GRG) at about 92% and as such a significant emphasis was placed on the gravity circuit. Commercial production started in 2008. Average gold recovery is 93.5% with about 68% of gold recovery coming from the gravity circuit. Over the course of the first several years of production, several gravity audits were carried out. In 2009, a complete gravity audit was completed, including ore, classification, Knelson Concentrators, and the gold room. In 2011, an audit was undertaken of the flotation circuit to determine the efficiency by which GRG is floated. Large samples of flotation feed and tails were collected and process for GRG content. This allowed a link between gravity and overall recovery to be made. This paper presents results of the audits and the development of a model linking gravity and overall gold"

"IntroductionIT HAS BEEN SAID, with good reason, that the future of the coal mining industry, in our mountainous regions at least, depends on ability to extend operations successfully to depths greater than those reached until now. However, at many points, Nature has given definite hints that trespassing there could be fraught with very un-pleasant possibilities, unless the intruder be governed by a series of rigidly observed principles. In the coal mines of British Columbia, so far, bumps have taken place only at the Coal Creek colliery, but there they gave ample evidence of the extent to which they can hamper underground operations. Some of these manifestations have also been experienced at the McGillivray Creek colliery, in Alberta, at Carbonado, in Washington, and at Sunnyside, in Utah.Cognate phenomena, known as 'air blasts', have been experienced also in some deep metalliferous mines in British Columbia. Such occurrences were responsible for three fatal accidents at the Le Roi and War Eagle mines, near Rossland, in 1916 and 1917.In more or less disturbed coal fields, another form of stress release, equally detrimental, has been still more generally experienced than have been the bumps. Coal outbursts have taken place at Morrissey and Coal Creek, in the Crow's Nest Pass district, and at Cassidy, South Wellington, and the Nanaimo Reserve colliery, on Vancouver island. Manifestations of this kind have been made the subject of intensive study in European countries where they occurred on a really impressive scale, which must not be construed as meaning that some of our own outbursts did not approach a comparable magnitude."

"This paper describes some of the methods and equipment used for fine milling of minerals, and gives particular attention to the Vibro Energy system.In addition, the paper describes a specific application in the gold mining industry. This is the 200 tpd plant built by Anglo American Corporation at the President Brand Mine in South Africa in 1985, now a division of Freegold. This plant treats a gold bearing pyrite flotation concentrate which is finely ground to 15 microns prior to cyanidation and carbon-in-pulp (CIP). l .0 INTRODUCTIONFree milling gold ores are those that yield acceptable dissolution and recovery of the gold following grinding to what can be described as normal fineness, frequently between 50% and 90% passing 74 microns.Increasingly, gold metallurgists are faced with ores that are refractory. The traditiona1 treatment route for refractory gal d ores and concentrates has been by roasting, but for environmental reasons this is becoming less acceptable, or in some areas of the world, totally unacceptable. New methods of treating refractory gold ores are being developed and applied in practice. These new methods include pressure and biological oxidation. Higher gold liberation can also be attained by increasing the fineness of grind, although with conventional systems there are economic limits to this.In flowsheet development and test programs on new deposits, a standard procedure is to establish the relationship between the grind and subsequent go 1 d extraction. The normal situation is that gold extraction increases as the ore, or concentrate, is ground finer. Typically, this relationship is as shown in Fig. l, where the incremental additional extraction is very small once an optimum, or economic, grind has been achieved. This generally app1ies whether the material is free milling or refractory. The limits to grinding are set by the type of equipment which is commonly in use, usually ball mills. These mills have the obvious advantage of high capacity, however, they are increasingly inefficient as finer grinds are required. In general, ball mills are used to reduce ore to some agreed percentage passing 74, or possibly 53 microns."

"The rapid growth of the mining industry in Canada necessitates a reevaluation of existing mining surveying techniques and the development of new methods. In this connection, the Department of Surveying Engineering at the University of New Brunswick initiated a research program, and the major points of investigation conducted to date are as follows: 1. Based on practical experience and theoretical studies, all factors influencing classical shaft-plumbing procedures were analyzed. Refined methods were developed to increase accuracy. 2. The performance of electronic and optical distance-measuring instruments in underground conditions were investigated. In this connection, test measurements were made in various mines, employing four types of Tellurometers, two models of Geodimeters and a proto-type optical range-finder. 3. Tests were conducted and methods developed for the mapping of large underground chambers by photo-grammetric means. The aforementioned points are discussed at some length in the paper. The authors have also indicated areas where further research is needed and suggested ways and means to improve and modernize mining surveying as a whole throughout Canada."

The Wabana deposit of Dosco Industries Limited is situated on the east coast of Newfoundland, at Bell Island in Conception Bay. It is a Clinton-type iron-formation of Lower Ordovician age. Five separate beds have been recognized, with others noted locally. Economic production has been obtained from the Lower, Middle and Upper beds, which are second, third and fifth in sequence, al-though at present only the Lower Bed is worked. The potential area of occurrence is about 70 square miles. It i;; bounded by major faults to the north, east and west and truncated by erosion at the south, where rocks of the de-posit crop out on the north side of the island. The iron is contained in oolitic hematite and chamosite, with minor siderite. As the deposit is submarine, conventional exploration methods are not applicable and much interpretation and projection from mined areas is necessary to guide exploration and development. With the interpretation of information from existing mined ores, it is possible, using a minimum of diamond drilling in advance of working faces, to maintain adequate ore reserves.

"The milling of sulphide ores inherently generates “thiosalts”, a series of partially oxidized sulphur oxyanions (S2O3 2-, S3O6 2-, S4O6 2- etc.), which make control of effluent treatment systems difficult because their natural oxidation produces acid with the potential to lower the pH within the treatment system and/or receiving environment.At the Xstrata Copper Kidd Metallurgical Site, thiosalt oxidation in the Tailings Management Area continues after buffer storage Ponds A and C where lime is added to precipitate metals and elevate the pH to within the required range for discharge. If the additional acidity generated during the continued process of thiosalt oxidation is not neutralized there is a risk that the final effluent will be non-compliant with regulated standards.To mitigate this risk, in 2007 a full scale pilot trial was conducted with hydrogen peroxide in order to force the complete oxidation of thiosalts prior to the lime treatment stations. This method of chemical oxidation had been shown to be effective at Xstrata Zinc’s Brunswick Mine. The pilot results indicated that a maximum of 50% of the stoichiometric quantity of hydrogen peroxide is required to reduce the thiosalt concentration in the No. 2 thickener overflow stream (feed to buffer storage Ponds A and C) to less than detection (10 mg/L); however, treatment was only effective in the presence of a 20 mg/L iron (Fe) catalyst. Since the hydrogen peroxide addition point at the No. 2 tailings thickener overflow typically contains <1 mg/L total Fe, a second reagent, ferric sulphate, was used to increase the total Fe concentration to the required level. Tailings and water management facilities are essential and integral components of mine and mill operations. They must be managed for the long term in order to ensure that safe and environmentally responsible stewardship is achieved. Toward this end, in 1998, The Mining Association of Canada (MAC) published A Guide to the Management of Tailings Facilities, which recommended the implementation of a tailings management framework (Figure 1) to integrate environmental and safety considerations into each stage of the life cycle of a tailings facility, from initial site selection and design, through construction and operation, to eventual decommissioning and closure. By February 2000 it was becoming apparent that while mining companies were making significant progress toward implementing and documenting tailings management systems, and integrating them with overall environmental management systems, further effort was warranted in their application at the operational level. In particular, a need was identified for further guidance in preparing manuals that outline procedures for the safe operation, maintenance and surveillance (OMS) of tailings and water management facilities.

Lac Cinquante is a mineralogically simple, vein-hosted uranium deposit in Archean basement rocks (Angikuni greenstone belt) that originally were unconformably overlain by Proterozoic sedimentary and volcanic rocks of the Baker Lake Group (BLG). Basement rocks are mainly pillowed and massive tholeiitic lavas (N-MORB) with interbedded tuff; overlying sedimentary rocks comprise a basal talus/fault breccia that grades upward into fluvial sedimentary rocks and subaerial, trachytic volcanic rocks; granite and porphyry dikes (Hudson and/or Nueltin granitoids) intrude the basement rocks. A typical section through the Main Zone comprises 1) laminated ‘tuff’, 2) altered (carbonate-hematite-chlorite) schistose ‘tuff’, 3) a pitchblende-bearing, breccia-vein, 4) altered ‘tuff’, and 5) laminated ‘tuff’. The vein comprises brecciated chlorite, hematite, and pitchblende with carbonate cementing the breccia. Graphitic ‘tuff’ with sulfide-stringer veinlets locally overlies or underlies the vein. Pitchblende also occurs in the altered rocks and in gash veins that cut basement rocks. U-Pb ages on pitchblende fall into two groups: one at 1828 } 29 Ma reflects primary uranium mineralization, and a second at 1437 } 31 Ma represents resetting. Pb-Pb chemical ages show other resetting events at 1260-1321Ma, 895 Ma, 741-813 Ma, and 660-706 Ma. One possible genetic model for the Lac Cinquante deposit involves leaching of uranium from granitoids and the BLG by basinal brines that migrated to depositional sites where graphitic rocks acted as a reductant. A second model requires that uranium was sole-sourced from the BLG and that granitoid rocks provided heat to drive the hydrothermal system, which leached and ultimately precipitated uranium. The deposit has characteristics similar to vein-type uranium deposits in the Beaverlodge District of Saskatchewan
