This paper examines the recent trend towards sustainability reporting and the application of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) æSustainability Reporting GuidelinesÆ. It also reviews reporting in the context of the Australian Minerals Industry Code for Environmental Management, as well as the status of public sustainability reporting globally in the minerals industry. The public reporting of environmental, health and safety, social/community and economic performance has evolved over the past two decades. Initially, separate and to some degree disparate documents were produced to report performance in each distinct area. In the early to mid 1980Æs some organisations had begun to report their environmental performance through some minor commentary in their annual financial reports or through ætokenisticÆ leaflets, often used as public relations exercises. Due to more media coverage and an elevated level of public scrutiny, organisations are no longer merely reporting their good performance, but also their bad and indifferent performance. In recent years these once separate environment, health and safety and community public reports have further evolved to become more integrated, reflecting organisations embarking on the reporting of their progress towards sustainable development. The primary factor in driving the evolution of sustainability reporting has been the increasing influence of stakeholders. Two groups of external stakeholders that have had a significant influence over public sustainability reporting in recent years have been non government organisations (NGOs) and socially responsible investment funds. Significant expenditure is involved in the preparation and publication of a sustainability report however many organisations do not appear to have examined in detail what they are really trying to achieve from their public reporting process. It is important to establish objectives for the public reporting process to achieve maximum benefits. Without a framework of public reporting objectives, the benefits of the reporting process to the organisation will not be recognised and the considerable expenditure involved will be increasingly difficult to justify. We believe that by focussing on the process rather than the document, significant benefits to the organisation can be gained. Indeed, with a proper framework of objectives and targets, the reporting process can be used as a vehicle to drive organisational change, implement management systems and improve performance. An idealised framework for a public sustainability reporting process sees the organisationÆs sustainability policies drive the entire process and determine the sustainability objectives. Specific targets are then set to realise those objectives. The targets will govern performance indicators that should be used to measure the success of target achievement and which will also define what data need to be collected. Evaluation is a key component of the reporting process to measure the success of target achievement and progress in realising objectives, as well as review the need for new targets to be set. The actual production of a public document is only one, albeit important, component of the overall reporting process. The challenges that lie ahead for sustainability reporting primarily relate to the integration of environmental, social and economic performance reporting as organisations integrate their approach to these areas. This will only happen as the culture of an organisation changes to not only accept the principles of sustainable development but to implement those principles in daily operations. The reporting process has the potential to drive that cultural change by communicating the organisationÆs sustainability objectives and setting challenging targets for their realisation. Public sustainability reporting will only achieve its maximum value when it forms an integral part of an organisationÆs sustainability management system and culture.

The Plumduff sinter occurs at Whenuaroa, near Puhipuhi, approximately 30 km north of Whangarei. It is one of three residual sinters in the southern portion of a mid- to late-Pliocene geothermal system. The deposit consists of many large sinter breccia boulders, including rudrocks (coarse breccias), scattered around the flanks and summit of the small conical hill of Plumduff. Three types of sinter breccia occur: (i) rudrocks consisting of large, angular to sub-angular clasts of layered sinter up to 0.8 m across, as well as smaller clasts of sinter (20 - 100 mm dia), and fragments of stromatolitic structures; all clasts are supported in a matrix of microcrystalline, transparent to translucent to milky quartz; (ii) fragments of layered angular to irregularly mottled sinter of white to grey or bluish hue supported in a translucent to opaque silica matrix; (iii) smaller, matrix-supported breccias with clasts both partially surrounded and/or penetrated, by a clay-like weathering rind, and sinter conglomerates with rounded to oblate clasts. Three principal types of fabrics constitute the bulk of the sinter: (i) stromatolites, including columnar, palisade and filamentous networks, showing progressive silicification, in fenestral, tufted to clotted fabrics; (ii) peloids and pisoids; (iii) plant-rich facies in which various silicified plant species occur in a silica matrix. All fabrics have counterparts in hot spring deposits in the Taupo Volcanic Zone formed at temperatures from 75¦C to 35¦C. Also present is steam-condensate-produced alteration: kaolinite and alunite as well as boulders of quartz lattice texture. Cinnabar only occurs in sinter on the north and south central slopes of the hillside. No quartz veins or geyserite were recognised.

Taking the third meridian as the eastern boundary of proved payable auriferous country, there is a stretch of country, nearly 600 miles in width, in which no appreciable amount of gold has yet been discovered. Many prospectors have attempted to .penetrate or traverse it, but comparatively few have thought it worth while proceeding with the examination.The desolate stretch of waterless desert-the very few and insignificant outcrops through the sand and the almost total absence of feed for horses have, combined, presented such a barrier as to preclude prospecting. The few who have traversed the country are eloquent in denunciation, yet their investigations, necessarily hurried, are not quite satisfactory. The absence of water utterly debars a thorough examination being made. Gold may exist in quantity, yet it would have to be extraordinarily plentiful to render its obtaining profitable. Too fantastic is the idea of its ever being a mining district; shifting sand to traverse, utter absence of wood and water render the notion absurd. Likely looking belts occur, but these in all "cases are small and remote from water. Gold has been obtained from likely look ing quartz reefs, but only by fire assay, and then but a few do to the ton. Without wishing to be pessimistic, I would unhesitatingly declare that east of the third meridian, and between the parallels 25 and 30 degrees in West Australia, there is no gold in payable quantities.

The study of gas emitted from face coal samples at the coal face is part of an investigation of instantaneous outbursts of coal and gas. Normally, seam gas essentially comprises methane of which the origin in the metamorphism of coal is undoubted. The origin of other gases sometimes occurring in high proportion in seam gas, particularly carbon dioxide, is more controversial. A simple meter for rapidly assessing gas in coal was developed. Tests with the meter enabled comparisons of seam gas in face coal at some outbursting and nonoutbursting mines, and under various working conditions. The varying results of widespread testing suggest certain trends, including some prospect of recognising outbursting potential at the coal face.INTRODUCTIONThe aim of this work is identification of differences in gas condition between coals subject to instantaneous outbursts and coals which have not outburst, and between faces of coals which will and which will not subsequently outburst. Any comparative test should be conducted right at the coal face on coal about to be worked and the results of testing should be available after a short period. Moreover, the method and the comparison of results should require no special skill, and be well within the capacity of junior mine officials. THE following notes were accumulated during the years 1905 to 1911, when the writer was employed at Stannary Hills. The writer's duty took him over the underground workings daily. In odd moments the geology of the surrounding country was worked out. As the time for this purpose was limited, many interesting points had to be left, untouched. The faulting system in the mines was of such a puzzling character that it seemed as if the geology of the surrounding district might throw some light on it. Dr Jack, in 1907, reported on these mines for the shareholders, but came to no definite conclusions. Unfortunately, the writer has not had access to this report for many years. At the time of his visit the larger develbpments in the Ivanhoe and, Kitchenen orebodies (see Fig 1, B2) were only being opened up. Mr. H. Herman mentions Stannary Hills on p 320, Proceedings Aust Inst ME, new series, No 14, and on p 326 expresses the opinion that the pipe or joint-veins (as at Irvine bank and Stannary Hills) were more valuable to follow than lodes in the granite in that district.GEOLOGY OF DISTRICTThe main feature of the area mapped is a band of altered sedimentary rocks which carry no fossils. It is a mile wide, and consists of a hard band of greywackes 200 ·t ·300 yds. wide, flanked on both sides by contorted shales which become more micaceous as the granite-area to the east is approached. This paper presents the results of a test program evaluating the impact of sample mass on the precision of Stage 1 gravity recoverable gold (GRG) test results. Four ore types ranging from low to high GRG contents were the focus of testing. A method to predict the influence of sample mass on the confidence limits of the Stage 1 GRG test result is demonstrated. The results suggest that although small samples tend to overestimate Stage 1 GRG in samples with low gravity gold values due to higher mass pull to concentrate, such samples can give acceptable estimates of the Stage 1 GRG content with focussed sample treatment protocols.CITATION:Giblett, A and Napier-Munn, T J, 2015. Lead smelter slags, produced during the last century in quantities ofmillions of tonnes at Lavrion, Greece, have recently been used in theconstruction of Lavrion harbour. In order to evaluate the geochemicalstability of slags and assess their environmental impact on the aquatic environment, a detailed study on lead leachability under conditions that simulate subsea environments was carried out. Leaching experiments using magnesium chloride solutions under mild temperature conditions were conducted and the effect of main parameters on lead solubility was examined. Furthermore, kinetic analysis on the experimental results was performed. Based on the results, lead dissolution increases by increasing the reaction time, magnesium chloride concentration in the bulk solution and temperature, whereas it decreases by increasing the slags particle size. The reaction order was found to be approximately 0.5 at the initial extraction stages and the activation energy value from the Arrhenius plot was estimated to 29.8 KJ/mole. Diagnostic equations applied to all the experimental data reveal that lead dissolution is mainly controlled by diffusion through the ferrosilicate matrix of the slag particles, which is in accordance with the low activation energy value. The JanderÆs diffusion equation [1-(1-a)1/3]2=kt was proposed as the equation representing the reaction of lead dissolution from slags using magnesium chloride solutions.

Stowing has been successfully used in many countries as a means of controlling surface subsidence, minimi ing incidences of spontaneous combustion, maintaining gate road stability and maximising coal recovery.Australian experience in stowing is limited but in the future increased extraction of thicker and/or multiple seams by longwall operations and resolution of conflict of alternative land u'ses may necessitate the use of stowing in coal mining. At present there is little incentive for mining companies to introduce and operate a stowing system because costs have to be borne by the individual companies and benefits spill over to society and the State. Cost sharing by the industry and State incentives may overcome the problem of cost disincentive.

This paper describes new research and development currently being undertaken by the CSIRO Mining Technology Group to advance the automation capability of continuous mining equipment in underground coal mining operations. The effort aims at increasing the overall rate of roadway development as well as providing a safer working environment for underground mine personnel. The activity is funded by the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) and forms part of a larger underground development initiative, known as the CM2010 project. The CM2010 is managed via a consortium of leading mining industry representatives through the Roadway Development Task Group (RDTG). The Task Group has identified three research areas requiring new development in order to realise the CM2010 project objectives: self-guiding (autonomous) continuous miner capability, an enhanced drilling and bolting process and improved mesh deployment. CSIRO's primary role in the CM2010 project is in the development of the autonomous continuous miner guidance capability.This paper reports on outcomes achieved at the half-way mark of a three year research and development project. It details the technical developments undertaken towards demonstration of a 'self-steering' capability to enable a continuous miner to automatically maintain a given mining heading and mining horizon under production conditions. A primary technical requirement of this automated functionality is the means to accurately determine both the location and orientation of the continuous miner in real-time. Testing and validation of the guidance system solution has been implemented using a combination of an instrumentation-grade inertial navigation unit and radar technology. Comprehensive performance evaluations have been conducted using a scale skid-steer mobility platform known as the Phoenix. Results achieved to the present stage of the project are highly promising and suggest that an automated self-steering functionality is achievable under production conditions. This new outcome represents an important move towards implementing a step change improvement for future underground roadway development.

Dynamic simulation (discrete event simulation) is the preferred methodology to evaluate the impact of dynamic aspects of processing plants on the overall plant capacity. This tool can be used to: identify bottlenecks in the plant,justify upgrade and expansion projects by evaluating their impact, oroptimise maintenance and operating practices without disrupting the operation. Iron Ore Company of Canada's (IOC) pelletising plant is a complex operation because of multiple products, varying equipment capacity and shifting bottlenecks. Furthermore, with extensive capital requirements for projects and long lead times, a high level of confidence in project outcome is required. Therefore, a model of IOC's pelletising plant in Labrador City was constructed in 2007 by a joint IOC and Hatch team. The model includes both operational and metallurgical aspects in order to better capture the complexity of IOC operation. In this paper, the justification, boundaries, and functionality of the model are described. A comparison of simulation results to historical plant operation is given. It is observed that projects have interactions and that the benefits of combined projects are not equal to the combined benefits of the individual projects. Projects can have synergies that result in greater benefits when combined or can have overlapping benefits that result in lower benefits when combined. The power of the proposed modeling exercise lies in the ability to assess the impact of projects on overall performance.

The Archaeozoic Willyama Complex at Broken Hill has suffered several periods of deformation and metamorphism. New structural and petrological information together with that available from the literature gives a picture of the metamorphic evolution of the Barrier Ranges. Several epochs of metamorphism are recognized, and potassium-argon dating of minerals has been applied with limited success to the resolution of these epochs.INTRODUCTIONAdvancements in the mineral industry at Broken Hill over the past eighty years have been accompanied by a continual striving towards increased understanding of both the geological history of the Barrier Ranges and the environment of the Broken Hill ore deposits. However, although many detailed studies of selected localities and particular-aspects of Broken Hill geology have been carried out recently, the regional geology of the Barrier Ranges as a whole has received little attention from a petrological viewpoint since the pioneer investigations of Mawson (1912) and Browne (1922). There still remains a great need for regional surveys combining field studies of the habits, structures and outcrop relationships of the various rock types with laboratory investigations of their chemistry, mineralogy and microscopic ,fabrics. Recording observations arising from three brief visits to the Broken Hill area during 1959 and 1963 may stimulate further surveys.During one of these visits, the generosity of the Zinc Corporation Limited in providing field transport and geological guidance enabled the writer to collect material and study field relationships and appearance of the various rock types at numerous localities covering most of the Willyama outcrop. In common with general experience in the iron-making industry overseas, Australia has in recent years suffered a deterioration in the physical quality of her iron ores in their suitability as a direct blast furnace feed. The increasing amounts of fines and the more friable nature of lump ore, especially in the ore from the Cockatoo Island deposits in Yampi Sound, Western Australia, have focused attention on problems of ore preparation and agglomeration, particularly sintering.Although very small pilot scale Dwight-Lloyd type sinter machines were operated at the steel-making centres at Newcastle and Port Kembla during World War II, no sizeable capacity was installed, so that ore was charged to the blast furnaces almost entirely unscreened, and the resultant flue dust was stockpiled.Towards the close of the war, the pilot plant at Newcastle was replaced by a small machine, adjacent to the flue dust stockpile, with a rated capacity of some 20 tons per hour. After approximately five months of part-time operation, this plant was closed down in January, 1945. Production was not resumed until December, 1950, when, due to a temporary ore shortage, it was decided to supplement available ore with sinter produced from the large flue dust stocks of about 300,000 tons. In spite of mechanical and process difficulties, inherent to the design of the plant, operation was continued on a two-shift basis, with several shutdowns for extensive overhaul and plant alterations, until September, 1954, when production was put on a three-shift basis. The demand for gallium has increased significantly over the last few decades due to the expanding use of Ga compounds in the electronics industry. Because it is widely dispersed and rarely found naturally in concentrations greater than 0.1%, Ga is expensive (approximately US$500/kg) and difficult to produce in large quantities.   A previous study of metals in geothermal systems reported significant quantities of Ga present in the muds on the northeast margin of Lake Rotokawa, an acidic lake associated with a high-temperature geothermal field situated in the Taupo Volcanic Zone of New Zealand. Similar muds are present in many other geothermal fields in the zone, suggesting that geothermal muds could be a commercial source ofGa.

Most geophysical and geochemical data collected during regional exploration programmes are in vector form (location, value), and have traditionally been presented and interpreted in a profile or contour map format. However, the human vision system can interpret data presented in image format much more easily and new information is often revealed by the judicious application of powerful interactive computer image enhancement techniques. This paper describes a practical demonstration of the application of such tools to gravity and resistivity datasets from the Central Volcanic Region of theNorth Island.   Filtering, contrast enhancement, relief shading, pseudo-colouring and then overlaying of the gridded datasets in image format has helped identify inter-relationships such as the association between many low resistivity anomalies (epithermal deposits or geothermal resources) and the edges of large gravity anomalies (calderas or grabens). Similar revelations should result from the application of these tools to the integration of other mapped datasets from geophysical, geochemical and geological disciplines.

The occurrence of molybdenite in a small shaft in the western margin of the Wuuluman Granite in central western New South Wales is noted. Full petrographic and mineragraphic descriptions are given of a mineralized contact zone between the granite and a basic hornfels.Mineralogical data .indicate a similarity between this mineral occurrence and other occurrences in larger mines remote from the granite.

Standard petrographic profiles for many Permian seams from New South Wales and Queensland have been drawn up. The standard profiles of seams of the same age and from one or more coalfields were used to compile an idealized or type seam sequence for those coals in which more than half the seam profiles were similar to one another. Winzes are usually sunk 9 ft. 6 in. long by 6 ft. 0 in. wide and are divided into two compartments, 4 ft. 0 in. by 5 ft. 0 in. inside the timbers. The general practice is to sink the winze to a depth of from 9 to 12 ft., put in bearers and three or four rings of timber, and then erect a sinking headframe before continuing sinking operations.GENERALThe main feature governing the design of the headframe was that all parts could be transported on timber trolleys in No. 2 Shaft. Except for some minor details the structural members consist of steam pipe. Joints are sections of steam pipe welded to one member and into which the other member fits and is held in place by a 1-in. bolt. The headframe consists essentially of two bedpieces to carry the winch and to form a seat for the four legs. The legs support the sheave bearers, the tipping door and the brace.Except during tipping operations the door is in a nearly vertical position. For tipping it is lowered to an inclined position and a hook suspended from one of the bracing members of the headframe is attached to a "D" welded to the bottom of the kibble. This causes the kibble to tip when it is lowered on to the tipping door. The capacity of the kibble is 4 cubic feet.THE HEADFRAMEThe dimensions of the headframe are:Height to top of sheave .. .. 14 ft. 10 in.Distance centre to centre of legs 4 ft. 4 in.Length of bedpieces .. .. .. .. 8 ft. 9 in.The weight is approximately 2,000 lb., the tipping door and bedpieces being the heaviest members. Three 3 inch pipes act as spreaders between them.Welded to the top of each bedpiece is a 6-in. by iHn. plate 3 ft. 0 in. long with four 4-in. by 1.5-in. slots cut longitudinally at 10 in. centres. This paper uses the results of research trials by Landcare Research and Forest Research Institute and assessments of reclamation plantings at mines and other drastically disturbed sites to describe methods of enhancing restoration of native forests. The characteristics of mine and forest environments are compared to highlight the difficulties facing restoration and techniques which result in successful restoration are described. Selection of the most appropriate technique is illustrated by describing restoration of lowland beech-podocarp forest at a West Coast coal mine. The key to successful reclamation is to understand the factors controlling and limiting plant establishment and growth, then to design rooting media, surfaces and management regimes to create a favourable environment. This paper concludes with a summary of the planning and technical factors which are critical for successful restoration of native forest.
