THE North Mount Lyell Mine is situated on the southern side of Mount Lyell at an altitude of 1750 ft. above sea-level. The average rainfall is 117 in., and there are generally several light falls of snow during the year. Despite the heavy rainfall, which is fairly evenly distributed over each of the twelve months, the climate is equable and not unduly rigorous, and, provided that the mine employee is suitably clad, it is only on exceptional days that he experiences any discomfort by becoming wet journeying to and from the mine.The majority of employes reside at Queenstown, and are conveyed by special trains to and from the top of the haulage, which is less than a mile from the mine. The mean surface temperature at the mine is 46° F., with a maximum variation from 26° F. to 85° F., the relative humidity generally being higher than in other districts. The rock temperature is 48° F. on the 200-ft. or Main Adit level, and 54° F, on the 1200-ft. level, giving a rise of 6° F. for 1000 ft. in depth.The ventilation of the mine is natural, the downcast being served by the Crown and Blocks shafts and the Crown mullock pass, and the upcast air is carried away from the workings by the Main shaft and the Nos. 1 and 2 mullock passes. The quantity of air circulating varies from 25,000 cub. ft. to 35,000 cub. ft. per minute, the greater quantity moving in the colder weather. The downcast air in traversing the wet shafts becomes saturated and enters the level at the rock temperature of 54° F. in winter and about 56° F. in summer, while temperature readings of the outcast air indicate that it varies very little.In the southern end of the mine the Blocks shaft downcast air upcasts through the different stopes, and their mullock passes, to the level above for each level to the 700-ft. level, where it passes to one of the main uptakes. A mining company has entered into contractual commitments to supply certain quantities of its product to clients in each time period. Failure to fulfil its obligations would damage its reputation as a reliable supplier. The planned production would normally be sufficient unless major problems such as highwall failures, roof falls, natural disaster, or strikes that interrupt production or delays in obtaining environmental permits, occur. To overcome these difficulties, the company may be able to obtain more of the commodity: from its strategic stockpile (if there is sufficient there); by buying it on the spot market; or for some commodities such as gold and uranium, by leasing it. Two sources of uncertainty, the spot price of the commodity and the occurrence of serious incidents that interrupt production, are considered. For simplicity it is assumed that the commodity price follows a geometric Brownian motion, that productions incidents have a binomial distribution, that they are independent from one time period to another and that they do not affect prices. A branching tree structure is used to model the joint evolution of prices and production incidents. The aim of this research project was to evaluate the companyÆs options for fulfilling its contractual commitments. When evaluating these options, multi-stage stochastic programming with recourse was used to solve this problem because in addition to providing the dollar value of the project, it gives decision-makers the æroadmapÆ to reach the optimal value. That is, how much material should be bought/sold on the spot market, how much to add to/subtract from the stockpile, how much to lease and in the worst case what the shortfall would be, for each time period as a function of the current spot price and breakdown status. A case-study over a five-year period is used to illustrate the proposed procedure. In this study the production would be sufficient to cover the companyÆs contractual commitments unless production incidents occur. Focus is on evaluating the impact of the quantity initially in the stockpile on the value of the project when the commodity market is tight, that is, when only small quantities can be bought on the spot market or by leasing.

Copper in zinc/lead sinter charged to the Imperial Smelting Furnace operated by Sulphide Corporation Pty Limited at Cockle Creek, New South Wales, concentrates in a complex lead dross which forms as the bullion is cooled to around 400°C. The 0.35 mm portion of this dross, containing approximatelY 67 per cent of the total copper, is treated via a hydrometallurgical route to produce 5000 tonne/yr of CuSO4 5H2O crystal.Around 3000 tonne/yr of copper-lead dross containing 49 per cent copper is leached at 55°C in continuous leach reactors with ammoniacal ammonium carbonate leach liquors to convert copper to soluble copper amine complexes. Leach ettlciencies of 80-85 per cent are obtained. Leach residues are repulped with ammoniacal liquid diluents from the plant and heated in a four stage steam distillation unit to reduce ammonia levels to between 0.5 and 1.0 g/Iitre. The resultant slurry is directed to an effluent treatment plant for final treatment, and separation and return of solids to the sinter plant.Copper is extracted from leach liquor by solvent extraction techniques based on the use of L1X 54 diluted 3:1 with Shellsol 2046 to give a nominal copper loading of 30 g/litre. The loaded organic is contacted with a sulfuric acid solution of pH 5 to remove the bulk of ammonia and zinc, then stripped at 55°C with a 60 g/Iitre H2SO4 95 g/Iitre copper solution to yield a 15 g/Iitre H2SO4 125 g/Iitre copper solution.This liquor is fed to an adiabatic vacuum crvstalliser operating at 35°C and 5 kPa vacuum where crystals of CuSO4 5H2O are formed. Crystals are separated from mother liquor and washed in a two stage pusher centrifuge, then dried in a hot air rotary drier. The crystal product obtained is of a high chemical purity and readily conforms to both Australian and overseas standards.

The Geological Resource Map of New Zealand (GERM) is a computerised inventory of aggregate, mineral, coal, petroleum and thermal water occurrences, containing summary information on location, production, geology, and geochemistry. The types of occurrences include quarries, mines, gold dredges, wells, outcrops, seeps, springs, and fields. The file contains entries for about 10,300 sites and is used to produce tables of data and maps at any scale, for single or multiple commodities. The published format is the New Zealand 'Geological Survey map series Geological Resource Map of New Zealand 1:250 000'. Seventeen of the 27 map sheets covering New Zealand were published by August 1991, with three more close to publication.

Numerical simulations using the discrete element method (DEM) were carried out to investigate the flow patterns and stress field redistribution at the hopper and feeder interface. The influences of different filling heights, belt speeds and clearances between the hopper bottom and feeder surface on feeder loads were studied. Meanwhile, experiments were conducted by utilising wedged plane-flow hoppers with different configurations and horizontal feeders with various clearances. The simulation results were compared with theoretical values and experimental measurements. In terms of the cases presented in this study, simulation results reveal good agreements with experimental observations regarding the flow pattern. Being similar to the theoretical values, the simulations provide close predictions on vertical feeder loads for steady flow states, but they may show significant overestimations for initial states. The Torington Lodes.This paper describes investigations into mineralogical, petrological and structural associations of cassiterite in occurrences of economic value. The work was carried out in three mines, during a number of years, in the hope that the, data collected might be helpfulin the search for occurrences of cassiterite in stanniferous zones and reduce unproductive exploratory work. Tin-bearing lodes at Torington, in the New England district, New South Wales, have been worked since 1880, and the locality is the most important centre of lode tin occurrence in the, State. The township of Torington is 18 miles westerly from Deepwater, a station on the Great Northern Railway, 446 miles from Sydney.The tinfield forms part of the Mole Tableland, which has an altitude between 3,000 ft. and 4,000 ft. above sea level. The country rock, in which the stanniferous lodes occur, is granite of Permian age, which has been intruded into Carboniferous claystone. An inlierof claystone is exposed to the west of the stanniferous area, 'and in it, close to' its contact with the enclosing granite, are occurrences of wolfram and bismuth. These minerals, together with chalcopyrite, pyrite, arsenopyrite, zinc blende, galena and molybdenite, in very small quantity, are associated with cassiterite in lodes traversing the granite, particularly near the claystone, but decrease in amount with distance from the contact. Their occurrence is sporadic and usually causes no trouble in dressing the cassiterite concentrate, the final product containing less than 1% of total penalisable impurity. In Curnow's mine, pyrite, galena and molybdenite have been observed at 700 ft. from surface.The granite is of the biotite type and its structure may be divided into four groups, or classifications, arising from segregation processes during cooling and consolidation. The four classes, in order of extent of distribution, are:1. Granite of normal type, in which the constituent quartz felspar and mica, have a particle size approximately 14, in.2. Porphyritic granite, in which the felspar particles are from % in. to lin. in size, that of the quartz and mica approximately % in.3. A fine-grained granite, in which the particles of all constituent minerals are % in. or less in size;4. A rock of highly siliceous ground mass containing very small particles of felspar and almost negligible biotite.Type 1 is the general type of granite in all mines of the field; types 2 and 3 may occur as large masses, or all three classes may merge rapidly one into the other, and all be disclosed in 20 ft. of driving. Usually, however, the segregations are massive, but are not associated with any special horizon. For instance, a mass of porphyiiticgranite extends from surface to a depth of 440 ft., for a distance of 350 ft. south from the New England main shaft. The upper levels of Curnow's mine, 14" mile south-east, are in normal granite, but a restricted mass 'of porphyritic granite occurred between Nos. 5 and 6 levels, or 400-500 ft. below the collar of the shaft...

The first mention of gold in Western Australia was in 1848 when some specimens of copper ore, which are believed to have come from the Murchison district, were sent to Adelaide for assay. Gold was present in these specimens, but no particular interest seemed to be attached to this fact as the search at that time was mainly concentrated on base metals and coal. Interest appeared to be shown in gold in 1852 when several parties moved out eastwards from York looking for goldbearing country. Though these parties inmany cases were very near to what is now known as the Yilgarn Goldfield, nothing was found.The next record of gold was reported in some specimens which were brought in from Cardup, some 25 miles from Fremantle. Though this area was investigated, it would appear that all the gold had been contained in the specimens and nothing further was found, though the report had been the cause of a small rush of people interested in gold.From time to time specimens had been brought in by various people from the district east of Northam, and in 1861 a reward emanating from private sources was offered for the finding of gold within a radius of 150 miles from Perth. The Government at this stage took an interest in exploration for gold and in the same year supplemented this privately offered reward on a £ for £ basis. The Government also, about this time, commissioned a practical miner, with prospecting experience in the Eastern States, to examine the country between Albany and Northam with a view to the possible existence of goldbearing veins in that area. This paper describes a mobile laboratory developed specifically for nickel prospecting, and which was designed to be operated by sub-professional staff in remote areas independently of established laboratories. An atomic absorption spectrophotometric procedure was used to determine nickel, cobalt, lead, zinc, and copper ID latentIc and sulphIde samples, with a detection limit better than 25 µg/g for all elements. The procedure was applicable to both soil and drill samples and the accuracy of the procedure, which was ±5 per cent relative at the 1,000 µg/g level was sufficient for the preliminary assessment of mineralized samples and the control of drilling operations. The analytical procedure and the means taken to ensure the necessary reproductibility and accuracy are described. One operator can carry out 400 elemental determinations per 8-hr day at an approximate cdst of 6 cents per elemental determination. The results are returned within a single day, a factor which can contribute materially to the efficiency of drilling operations.

Space-based synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data is becoming available over much of the world, includingNew Zealand. Radar imagery has a number of very advantageous features, including all-weather capability; it also has artifacts, such as layover, which require processing before these data may be used to best effect.   This paper gives an outline of SAR, details the image processing required, and discusses the use of the first New Zealand Japan Earth Resources-1 SAR data to aid geological mapping on the Coromandel Peninsula.

SMC Resources Limited is implementing a selective mining approach at the Hadleigh Castle mine, formerly operated by Aurora Gold Limited. The main ore zone has a length of 250 metres and dips at 40 - 45¦ to the south. Gold mineralisation occurs in a variety of quartz-sulphide lodes in sericitised granodiorite. Shallow dips, alteration intensity and mineralisation style combine to make mining relatively difficult. Previously unworked, high-grade, shallow dipping (30 - 45¦), narrow quartz-sulphide lodes within the hanging-wall of the deposit are also being selectively exploited. Annual production of 35 000 oz Au is forecast from 185 000 tpa ore grading 6.5 g/t Au over a currently envisaged mine life of six years. Operations completed to-date include deepening the decline and access development of the first two levels beneath the previous workings. Longhole stoping operations have commenced in the main ore zone with air leg stoping also underway in the hanging wall lodes.

Highwall stability is a major consideration in optimising opencast mine geometry. It involves assessing the risk of those slope failures that are large enough to have significant cost, safety and/or operational implications. These risks are then balanced against the value of the resource to arrive at an acceptable slope design. Load-deformation models (commonly referred to as ænumericalÆ models) of slopes provide a powerful tool in this decision-making process since they can be verified well before slope failure occurs. This gives the slope designer increased confidence in reviewing designs during excavation, potentially allowing early revision of pit geometry to either increase or decrease safety margins as appropriate. However, these models are not always adopted as they depend heavily on an appropriate choice of constitutive model and material parameters.   A preliminary load-deformation model of a 170m highwall in Solid Energy North (SEN) OperationsÆ Awaroa 4 opencast coal mine in the Rotowaro Coalfield has been prepared. This uses a strain-dependent constitutive model based on laboratory test results, strength parameters developed by SEN and excavation monitoring data. The laboratory testing has included triaxial compression tests on large-diameter fractured samples to characterise the stress-strain response of the closely-jointed soft rock masses that exist in many parts of the mine. Data from the monitoring of a 25m cut made during excavation of a haul road has been used to refine and verify the constitutive model. The resulting highwall model has predicted highwall crest movements corresponding to the excavation of each bench, for comparison with monitored values. Key model outputs are total horizontal movements of about 0.5m near the highwall crest and shear strains of 0.5-0.7% at the locations of potential bedding-parallel shear planes underlying the highwall. Most of the movement is expected to occur as creep rather than as an immediate response to excavation.

A combination of the needs of business, employee desires and safety and health considerations is stimulating increasing attention to the time spent by people at work and the timing of that work. Particularly we are seeing: - innovative work schedules for 24-hour mining businesses; and - response from industry to accommodate the needs, even the desires, of employees in return for systems which are more productive and more capital efficient. There appears to be an evolutionary trend for business management to become more sophisticated and responsive to the need for achieving close to best cost work schedules to sustain continuous improvement. The underlying motivating forces driving this trend for improved techniques in organising attendance at, and time spent at work, is the seemingly inseparable combination of technological advance and ever-increasing accumulation of capital. The mining industry has not remained untouched by this thrust for ever-increasing need for best use of labour, to adopt advances in technology and to provide attractive opportunities for putting accumulated capital to work. An essential component of this on-going thrust is a substantial effort by the mining industry to improve the performance of labour by providing most-productive work schedules.

Approximation of Surface Area of Fines in Blast Induced Fragmentation The surface area of fragmentation, especially in the finer size fractions, is a useful property to characterise the mechanisms of rock breakage. In the past, researchers have made assumptions with regard to the shape of fragments in order to estimate surface area, such as that all fragments are the same shape or all fragments are spheres. Often these assumptions were developed with inappropriate measures and returned considerable variability and error for the calculation of surface area. This paper reports a model to estimate fragmentation surface area from sieve sized raw data and a density measurement, with experimental validation down to a size fraction of -45 + 38 ?m in a range of rock types. After characterisation of particle shape, a range of fragment shapes was found to be in each size fraction. Nevertheless, in the ?2 sieve series the average fragment mass, volume and the size fraction standard deviations could be predicted reasonably accurately. Ellipsoid geometry was used to describe particle shape. Using these parameters and the number of fragments (also predicted) in each sieve size the individual surface area of each fragment was simulated.

It is easy to demonstrate the importance of aggregates in any conversation about infrastructure and other engineering artefacts. Peoples around the world have made use of stone to enrich and enhance their lives since the earliest days of civilisation. In New Zealand, Maori used hard durable rocks for weapons, tools, and basic structures. European settlement accelerated the use of quarried materials and formed the basis for development of our society as we see it today. Logic might suggest that the quarrying sector would be recognised positively for, and encouraged to continue to contribute to, this underpinning of the way we are. The reality is æNot In Most Back YardsÆ. Why? The rock is where it's always been (often overlooked) and our æsocialÆ environment is today's hard place. For a resource-based business in New Zealand, that environment is principally the Resource Management Act, with the widespread power it has distributed to anyone prepared to invest their time. This coupled with a lack of leadership and direction in the implementation of the Act has created a climate that stifles development and diverts energy and resources to æplaying the gameÆ rather than ælifting the gameÆ. Perhaps the real costs of this are not yet widely recognised. The paper will draw mainly on the experience of endeavouring to consent a ægreenfieldÆ quarry in the Waikato region. This is supported by commentary based on nearly 10 years of ælivingÆ with the RMA at sites across much of New Zealand. RMA Scorecard Summary: Effects based? Rarely. Level playing field? No. Maori Consultation? Could do better. Efficient use of resources? No. Timely? No. Is it working for other sectors? Certainly not the quarrying industry's customers and end users.

Field and laboratory data combined with computational modelling have been used to predict the pit water quality for the Highway Reward mine. Open pit mining of the Highway Reward copper-gold deposit has produced a final mining void with a diameter of 600 m and a depth of 280 m. This void will be left to fill with ground and surface water once pumping of pit water ceases. Several leaching tables were constructed to simulate weathering reactions and surface water run-off in the major pit wall units during a 200-day leaching experiment. During investigations of the treatment methods for ore from the Bird-in-Hand gold mine carried out at Kalgoorlie and at these laboratories, it was found that excess alkali caused a lowering of extraction by cyanide, the cause of this being attrIbuted to the presence of a small amount of oxidised lead compounds in the ore. The subject has been discussed by various writers,3 but no satisfactory explanation of existing facts has been put forward. A thermal neutron irradiation technique using a mCf neutron source has been developed and applied to thp.simultaneous determination of iron and aluminium (expressed as AI2O3) in iron ore fines (-6 mm particle size) on a moving rubber conveyor belt.While the determination of iron with this technique is based on the use of a NaI(TI) detector to monitor the characteristic prompt gamma rays (7.64 MeV) emitted by thermal neutron capture reactions in the iron, the etermination of AI2O3 is based on the use of a second Nal(Tl) detector to monitor the characteristic gamma rays (1.78 MeV) emitted after thermal neutron activation of the aluminium. The second detector is located downstream from the first. Although the speed of the conveyor belt has no direct effect on the iron measurements, it must not exceed about 3 m/min if good accuracy is required for the AI2O3 measurements. Consequently an auxiliary conveyor belt is required in order to avoid interference with normal ore processing.Dynamic trials of the technique, using 1500 kg samples of ore on a 460 mm-wide rubber conveyor belt moving at 1.7 m/min, have demonstrated that the method can achieve accuracies of 0.7% Fe and 0.1% AI2O3. At the present stage of development, it is recommended that lump ore be crushed to a particle size of 6 mm before analysis.In addition to iron and AI2O3 determinations, measurements of total moisture content and bulk density are possible. The determination of Si02 is also feasible, but a separate fast neutron source (e.g., Am-Be) and a separate gamma ray detector are required.

Brief descriptions of several types of unit pulverizeI' are given and the functioning of the components that crush, carry, dry and classify the coal is considered. A distinction is drawn between pulverizers which crush particle beds and those .operating by free-crushing. The overall performance of pulverijlers is considered in terms of correlations between mill variables, coal grindability, abrasiveness, moisture and particle size. Brief discussioiJ. of the influence of pulverized fuel quality on boiler operation and of pulverizing costs concludes the paper.INTRODUCTIONModern coal pulverizers function as carriers of materials and as crushers, as dryers and as size classification machines and, thus, the unit pulverizer comprises. several components that normally function as separate apparatus. The controls of the unit pulverizer must have sufficient flexibility to accommodate rapid variations of boiler load or coal quality. Further, the machine must be robust, yet easy to maintain preferably at annual intervals-so that maintenance costs are small (for coal is a relatively cheap material). Usually, the full load of a modern pulverized-fuel fired boiler can be raised with one pulverizer off-line. All coals, from anthracites to brown coal, may be prepared as pulverized fuel (hereafter P.F.) .Each pulverizer of a direct-fired boiler has, broadly, to supply the burners with coal powdered so that about 80 per cent passes a 200 B.S. sieve and only a small proportion, less than about 10 per cent, remains on the 100 B.S. sieve. The classification processes must prevent any appreciable proportion of coarse particles in the P.F. and yet not return excessive proportions of "finished" fines. Since the Eocene, New Guinea tectonics have been driven largely by the south-westerly-directed collision of accreted arc terranes with the northern margin of the Australian Craton, and subsequent westerly-directed transport of these exotic terranes by left-lateral strike-slip fault systems. The subduction of the Solomon Sea plate beneath north-eastern New Guinea in the mid- to late-Miocene led to magmatism and related gold-copper porphyry and epithermal mineralisation in the Maramuni arc and the formation of the Frieda River, Nena, Wafi-Golpu and other deposits.The development of the world-class porphyry and epithermal deposits in the Medial New Guinea magmatic belt, including Grasberg, Ok Tedi and Porgera, is localised by dilational zones formed about the intersections of north-easterly-trending, reactivated basement faults and north-dipping reverse faults related to the southward progression of the Papuan fold belt during the Late Miocene to Pleistocene. These deposits probably formed during short mantle-derived magmatic episodes in zones of regional isostatic uplift, which are attributed to the delamination of the lithospheric mantle beneath New Guinea.CITATION:Garwin, S L, 2015. The increasing pace of modern mining makes constantly greater demands upon the several contributing departments of rock breaking and transport, and rock-drilling, as the spearhead of attack, has received a great deal of attention with respect to both machines and steels. By a series of mechanical improvements, combined with the application of selected heat-treated alloy steels, the rock-drill has now been developed into a machine capable of rapid drilling and long service under severe working conditions. As a factoryproduct made under strict metallurgical control it is as foolproof as, say, the modern automobile, and, like its prototype, it can be kept in efficient operation by a minor amount of attention during use and by periodical adjustments and replacements.The same cannot be said, unfortunately, of the drills with which the machine is supplied; in conventional mine-shop practice these are made of the best tool steel shaped and heat-treated under the poorest of metallurgical conditions.The crudities of steel-shop practice have, in fact, always prevented the full exploitation of the steels available at any time, and even at the present day the general standard of treatment offers a contrast with the quality of the steels which moves the metallurgist to amusement, despondency or outrage, according to his temperament. Nevertheless, the tendency persists to meet the increasing demands of the rock-drill primarily by the use of still better steels, and secondarily by improvement, of the steel-shop practice. Athird type of development is the introduction of factorymade tools in the form of detachable bits and rods.
