Central Norseman Gold Corporation was established in 1935 and has been mining on the Norseman field in Western Australia since then. It is Australia’s longest continuously operating gold mining operation at nearly 80 years, although it has had its periodic challenges in the intervening years.Over the last 40 years, a series of open pit mines around the Dundas Goldfield have supplied lower cost mill feed to the Phoenix Mill at Norseman from time to time but this has largely come to an end for the foreseeable future. Now that underground ore sources are once again the principal mill feed, there are several challenges to be met for an ongoing profitable operation.During the last 20 years, there have been three different owners and this has affected the manner in which the operations were managed quite significantly. These differing approaches are contrasted and examined in some detail from both the operational and financial aspects.Planning of a downsized operation to ensure sustainable profitability in the future in a mining environment where there has rarely been more than two to four years of reserves ahead of the mill for planning purposes has been a significant challenge. Oceana Gold (New Zealand) Limited operates the Macraes Gold Mine near Dunedin on the South Island of New Zealand. The orebody is mineralogically complex and comparatively low grade requiring a series of unit processes and resulting in a relatively complex plant. As part of Oceana GoldÆs ongoing Business Improvement program, a concerted effort has been made to focus on operational efficiency. One aspect of this has been the efficient use of energy in the gold recovery process. A benchmarking process has been developed for the Macraes operation that includes comparison with other operating mines and theoretical design. Criteria for determining operational efficiency have been developed. While benchmarking is, in theory, a simple process, this paper looks at putting benchmarking into practice by catering for variability in ore and associate processing methods. The unit processes discussed include the comminution circuit, flotation plant, pressure oxidation plant and gold recovery circuits.

During most of its history, the metallurgical industry has been seen as a source of pollution for the environment. However, during the second half of the 20th century, as the world environmental legislation became more protective and the global environmental conscience consolidated, this landscape began to change. Metallurgical activities have become increasingly related to the social and environmental impacts caused by human activities. With the adoption of environmental management in steel plants, there has been a significant change in steel-related activities which have begun to introduce modern plants, managed with environmental, social and productive efficiency. More and more, steel companies search for a decrease in negative impacts of their industrial operations on the environment, fitting them to the current environmental legislation and even increasing productivity and profitability. The steel industry has started to become a clean and more efficient industry. This work presents a case study of a sustainable steel plant project, located in an environmental preservation area. The project includes treatment and reuse of industrial liquid effluents, air emissions control, noise control, recycling, recovery and adequate waste management. It also incorporates production processes using clean technologies, capable of coproducing energy resources which may be used in the plant showing how is it possible to produce steel with environmental and social responsibility and even increase the enterpriseÆs profitability.

The completion of the Hot Strip Mill at the Port Kembla works of Australian Iron & Steel Ltd., makes possible the production of steel plates and wide strip of a quality and in quantities not possible previously in Australia, and will also enable the production of tinplate to be undertaken in this country.The site chosen for the mill was a mud fiat underlain by a hard stone bottom at 5, to 801 feet below the surface; and a total area of one hundred acres was reclaimed to a level of 20 feet above the original surface.Three adjoining buildings were constructed to house the slab receiving yard, mill equipment and electric drive, together with the plate finishing line.After slabs have been heated to 2250°F at a rate of 90 tons per hour, they are transferred to the vertical scale breaker which is the first stand in the hot roughing mill. Here the primary furnace scale is first cracked and then blasted off by high velocity water descaling sprays.The next stand is the horizontal scale l;Jreaker, where any remaining primary scale is broken and then blasted off. After descaling, the slabs pass to the broadside mill, where short slabs are turned and rolled on broad side for wide plate.The next step is a slab squeezer which squares up the edges after broadsiding ready for the reversing mill. This is the finishing stand for plate and the last roughing stand for strip, which then passes to the finishing mill.The hot strip finishing mill consists of six stands with a maximum finishing speed of 2,230 feet per minute. Blasting techniques are widely used to fragment rock masses into smaller pieces. Numerical modelling is an efficient method employed by many researchers in the blasting field. It is difficult for a conventional continuum-based approach such as the finite element method (FEM) to model the rock fragmentation by blasting and the expansion work on the rock by explosive and its detonation products. In this paper, the particle blast method (PBM) was employed to model the behaviour of the detonation and a bonded particle model (BPM) was used to model the brittle material to be blasted. A mortar cylinder with a centrally placed hole for the explosive was modelled and the results were compared to the experimental data. The blast process from crack initiation to fragment formation was analysed. The influence of coupling ratio on fragmentation was also investigated.CITATION:Yi, C and Johansson, D, 2015. The Water Delivery Alliance (WDA) was established to design, construct and commission the pump station and desalinated water delivery pipeline to link the desalination plant on the Kurnell Peninsula (constructed by others) with the existing distribution network at Erskineville, Sydney, Australia. The WDA consisted of McConnell Dowell Corporation Ltd (Macdow), Bovis Lend Lease Pty Ltd (BLL), Kellogg Brown and Root Pty Ltd (KBR), Worleyparsons Ltd (WOR), Environmental Resources Management Group Inc (ERM) and Sydney Water Corporation (SWC).Sydney’s Desalination Project is one of the initiatives to secure Sydney’s water supply against the effects of climate change, population growth and drought. The desalination plant, 100 per cent powered by renewable energy, can supply up to 250 million litres of water per day (mld), which is up to 15 per cent of Sydney’s water needs. The project involved the construction of an 18 km pipeline with an ultimate capacity of 500 mld to accommodate any future increase in the output of the desalination plant.The Alliance procured three full-face tunnel boring machines (TBM) from Herrenknecht AG to construct the 6.5 km of tunnel that would provide a conduit for the DN1800 welded mild steel cement mortar lined (MSCL) pipeline at a number of locations along the route. Nineteen shafts and 16 tunnels were required to complete this work.Crucially one of the TBM drives involved construction of a tunnel into Botany Bay under protected marine life habitats; enabling the connection of the MSCL water carrier pipeline into the dredged section of pipeline underwater, approximately 800 m off-shore in Botany Bay.This paper details the retrieval of the 17.4 m long TBM from the ocean floor upon completion of the Botany Bay tunnel allowing for subsequent use on the Project. Elements covered in the paper include the 835 m tunnel, design and construction techniques for the tunnel and recovery, and details of the methods used to install the DN1800 water carrier pipeline.

The Gladstone region, as one of the most industrially intense regions in Australia, uses significant quantities of fresh water. Awoonga Dam, situated on the Boyne River, is the only major source of water in the region. The current typical annual usage is 53 GL (Porteous, 2006) and approximately 80 per cent of the water is used by heavy industry (Gladstone Area Water Board, 2004). Until relatively recently, there has been ready and easy access to raw water for industrial use. The recent drought, which resulted in severe water restrictions in 2002 and 2003, emphasised the importance of water for a dominant industrial region like Gladstone. Although now in the process of changing, the typical contractual arrangements in the past have provided little financial incentive for efficient water use. From research undertaken on potential water reuse opportunities, several key questions have emerged related to water management in an industrial region such as Gladstone. This paper highlights these key questions, presents findings from recent regional strategies and assesses the potential for water reuse. Even though there is no clear-cut financial incentive for reusing water, there could be stronger regional and risk mitigation drivers for doing so. Initiatives to incorporate adaptive capacity through collaborative industrial synergies would allow for robustness and resilience in water security, leading to long-term sustainable water management across the Gladstone region.

Responsibility for the administration of mineral resources is divided between federal and provincial governments. The paper traces the evolution of mineral policies at both levels of government, from the end of World War II to the present. In the immediate post-World War II years, the emphasis was on supplying the raw material needs of a rapidly growing world economy. Policies favouring growth and development of the Canadian mining industry were instituted during this period. Two decades of uninterrupted expansion (the 1950s and 1960s) ensued. The decade of the 1970s was a turbulent one for Canadian mineral producers. Governments intervened more substantially than ever before. Moreover, the industry suffered from an intense period of competition for resource revenues by the two levels of government. At the same time, far reaching changes were taking place in the structure of world mineral markets. To date in the 1980s, the mineral industry has, perforce, adapted to existing mineral market structures. Mineral policies, too, have shown signs of adapting to the needs of the mineral industry. Whether the resulting mix of policies will permit the revitalization of the Canadian mining sector remains to be seen.

The Fimiston Open Pit (commonly referred to as the æSuper PitÆ) is a part of the Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines Pty Ltd (KCGM) operation in Kalgoorlie-Boulder. KCGM manages the Fimiston Open Pit, the Mt Charlotte underground mine, the Fimiston Mill and the Gidji Roaster for its Joint Venture Owners, Newmont and Barrick Australia. KCGM produces up to 850 000 ounces of gold per year. The KCGM operations are located on the historical Golden Mile on the outskirts of the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder, about 600 kilometres east of Perth Western Australia. This traditionally underground mining centre has been worked since 1893, yielding in excess of 50 Moz of gold from ore with an average head grade of 10 g/t. This represents approximately ten per cent of the gold produced in Australia and one per cent of the gold produced in the world. The Fimiston Open Pit is essentially an aggregation of what were known as the Judd, South, Paringa, Croesus/Eclipse, Central, Brownhill, Drysdale, Morrison, North and Horseshoe pits into one continuous large-scale operation. The old Fimiston Underground Operations (included the Main, Croesus, Chaffers, Lake View, and Perseverance shafts) were also located within the area of the Fimiston Open Pit. The underground operations closed in 1992 due to high mining costs.

In New Zealand, volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits are found in three main geological environments associated with: 1.   ophiolitic basalts of Oligocene age in Northland and East Cape (eg Pupuke, Pakotai, Parakao and Lottin Point); 2.   with chert and pillow lava in greywacke sequences of Permian-Jurassic age (Torlesse and Waipapa terranes; eg Kawau Island, Te Kumi and Maharahara) and their metamorphic equivalents (Haast Schist; eg Moke Creek and Waitahuna); and 3.   with greenschists (metabasalts) and metaserpentinite of Permian-Triassic age (Ponamu Ultramafics) in Westland (eg Bowen and Wilberg ranges). The deposits consist of small lenses of disseminated to massive sulfide minerals, mainly pyrite and chalcopyrite. Small quantities of copper ore were mined from some deposits in the 1800s (eg Kawau Island from 1846), with the last mining at Parakao from 1961 to 1966. Several deposits have been recently examined for their gold potential with assays on sulfide rock samples as high as 75 g/t Au (Lottin Point).

For years traditional optical microscopic techniques have been used successfully to carry out mineralogical studies on processing products. Essential information could be obtained by supplementing microscopic data with X-ray powder diffraction data, chemical analyses, etc. However, most of the time the mineralogists working on plant related issues, would supply qualitative information to the metallurgists, due to quantification not being possible in the available time. Since the late-80s, the use of semi-automated to automated techniques for mineral quantification has impacted positively on the use of mineralogy for optimising processing plants. Rustenburg Platinum Mines (now Anglo Platinum) were the first mining company to purchase a Qem*Sem in 1987. With the success achieved in quantifying the minerals in the concentrator streams of the Rustenburg Platinum operations, a second instrument was purchased soon after. These instruments have proven invaluable tools in understanding the flotation behaviour of the sulfide and gangue minerals in the various reefs of the Bushveld. Restrictions in the resolution of these earlier instruments, as well as the time involved in searching for and correctly identifying the fine-grained platinum-group minerals (PGM), meant that these investigations focused on the deportment of the more abundant base metal sulfides, rather than on the actual PGM. The Mineral Liberation Analyser (MLA), which became available in the late 1990s, was well suited to detect and analyse minerals occurring in trace amounts such as the PGM. Anglo Platinum was the first mining company to purchase such an instrument and now has fourteen systems operating at the AR Crown Mines site. One of the applications of these systems involves the study of feeds, concentrates and tailings from the various concentrators on a monthly basis. These routine investigations provide information on a variety of mineralogical parameters, including liberation, association, and grain size. Results are used to emphasise areas for improvement, and specifically underline those areas where improvements will have the most impact on recovery. After new or different technologies have been implemented, mineralogical characterisation of the different process streams is an essential component in the assessment of the impact of these changes on flotation performance. In addition, the knowledge is databased for future reference to draw trends across the various concentrators around the Bushveld complex, and is also used for comparative studies when plants experience high losses to tailings. Due to the success of these investigations the question was posed whether it was possible to obtain data on a daily basis, as compositing samples could hide the impact of daily events. Although the instruments currently used are suitable for a research environment, these are not ideal for mine-site implementation. For that reason Anglo Platinum, together with FEI embarked on a development program to develop a system that can be implemented on-site to measure the important mineralogical characteristics on a daily basis. Important requirements for such a system include time-to-data, ease of use and regular quality control. Highlighting some results from concentrator studies, the presentation will review the progress on the development of automated mineralogical techniques for fast, automated mineral measurements. The terms measured resources and proven reserves denote the highest level of estimation confidence in all of the major classification schemes. But what do they really bring to today’s project or mine with respect to production planning and expectations? Initial reserve declaration does not need measured resources, just indicated resources. Economic viability of a project is assessed on total reserves with nary a bonus for the amount of proven reserves. Production plans are based on grade and tonnage goals that may only coincidently correspond to proven reserves. So are the measured and proven categories still relevant? Historically, and almost exclusively in underground mines, companies only allowed mining in areas of proven reserves. Some companies still follow that philosophy. But many others will mine a mixture of probable and proven reserves without hesitation. Also what of the undeveloped project in a new district – what is to be made of their declared measured resources and proven reserves? Measured resources are commonly set either by some type of proximity to data scheme or a matter of ‘feel’ based on the qualified person’s experience. The parameters for reserve conversion focus on the project as a whole and then a portion becomes classified as proven reserves almost solely based on whether the resource category is measured. So should the mining industry continue to use these categories of resource and reserve classification? This paper will present arguments about making these categories once again more relevant. A more disciplined usage of these categories may re-introduce their relevancy in public disclosures of resources and reserves. As well a more consistent usage in operations may lead to increased confidence in managing production targets and costs.

A comprehensive Australia-wide survey of comminution energy consumption at copper and gold mines was presented by the authors at the 11th AusIMM Mill Operators’ Conference 2012. The database has been extended to include major overseas mines and used to benchmark comminution energy consumption across the industry. The mines included in this study now represent 15 and 24 per cent of the total global gold and copper production respectively, and almost all Australian production. The comminution energy intensity per unit of saleable metal has been presented in a graphical form similar to a cost curve used in economics. The graphical method has been developed to assess the competitive advantage that can be achieved by reducing comminution energy intensity.This benchmarking tool has been applied to three published case studies to assess its applicability. The first case study indicated that a large reduction in size-specific energy (kWh/t -75 µm) was achievable by converting standard semi-autogenous and ball mill circuits to include high pressure grinding roll and stirred mills. The second case study investigated the metal-specific energy reduction historically achieved by Bougainville with the addition of a preconcentration screening plant. The final case study was conducted by Barrick Gold Corporation and involved incremental efficiency upgrades at three of its gold mines: Cortez, Cowal and Mara North. The application of the benchmarking tool to each of these case studies successfully demonstrated the scale and competitive advantage that was achieved by reducing energy intensity.CITATION:Ballantyne, G R and Powell, M S, 2014. It is the role of the exploration geologist to create wealth through the discovery, delineation and characterisation of economic mineralisation. This requires a critical depth of geological understanding.Unfortunately, the resource industry is well known for its cyclic nature. Many of the current generation of workers have only ever experienced the boom of the ‘super-cycle’ and are only just discovering the negative side to the business. For the case of the geologist and especially the exploration geologist, the magnitude of peaks and troughs are usually amplified and may become destructive to all parties. During the uptime a healthy stream of exploration good news becomes the staple diet of company releases, in particular those of junior companies attempting to bolster the share price. The geological knowledge and experience gained thus forms a significant and integral part of the value and therefore, future of a company. On the downturn it is often viewed that geologists are a luxury, an optional extra and a burden on the bottom line with companies entering a period of memory loss and myopia.Retention of geological knowledge however remains critical as projects, companies and cycles mature. Beyond exploration per se, this knowledge becomes both fundamental in de-risking and commercialising an asset (through development or divestment) and in positioning the company for cyclic or counter-cyclic opportunities.The growth and retention of this knowledge base is difficult to quantify in terms of direct value but becomes one of a successful resource companies greatest assets. At worst, its loss can lead to millions of investors’ funds wasted on missed opportunities, drilling, or poorly designed plant and mine.But the rocks are around for the longer haul and pay little notice to the vagaries of the scurrying of Man.This paper reflects on some of the authors own observations through 25 years of iron ore exploration, in why it is critical to always rigorously question the prevailing geological (mis)understanding and the technical and commercial benefits which that may bring, and looks forward to the future.CITATION:Kepert, D, 2015. A critical component of any new tunnel design in a complex geological setting is the development of an integrated three-dimensional (3D) geology model with a full set of geotechnical properties of the rocks present. A novel means of predicting the geology based upon sparse observations of structural geology at the surface and from drill holes has been developed and used in several major tunnel studies in Europe.An example of this is the Lyons-Turin twin rail tunnel which is still in a development phase. This tunnel has been in planning and development for over 15 years already. An important aspect of this work is to characterise geological uncertainty along various possible tunnel paths as an input into early design optimisations for time, cost and risk avoidance strategies. Once the tunnel works commence and more detailed geological data is collected by daily mapping, progressive refi nement of the geological model is desirable; geological conditions still to be encountered can be more accurately predicted. Faults and their offsets, dykes, geological unconformities, folding, as well as standard sedimentary processes are all correctly modelled in the software. It is important to allow for seamless interchange of geological models at various scales with CAD workflows so that sufficient detail can be readily accessed at the required scale. Also, the proposed tunnel in its correct geometry can become a ‘section’ in its own right. Progressive detailed local geology models in the vicinity of the advancing head are created from the regional scale work by cutting and pasting a starting model, then adding all the extra detail for the required engineering geology work.For all rocks, most standard geotechnical quantities such as sonic velocities, Young’s modulus and Poisson’s ratio are handled. These and any other phenomena from borehole observations can have variograms calculated and stratigraphically constrained estimations made in a least biased geostatistical manner, in advance of the tunnel. RQD, or a prediction of rock fractures, is handled by the faulting and folding modelling facilities. This is probably the more interesting issue to pursue, as the fractal nature from small scale fractures and joints, to large-scale faults, can now be characterised more convincingly.

Minnovare identified the potential to improve production drilling outcomes in underground long-hole stopes through the adaptation of new technology which was under ongoing development. An approach to Evolution Mining resulted in the companies agreeing to a collaborative agreement to further develop the technology for use on underground long-hole drilling equipment. During a period of six months in FY2018, a series of trials were conducted to compare drilling accuracy using two different methodologies and the subsequent impact this had on ore dilution. Testing was conducted at Cracow underground gold mine in Queensland, Australia. The drill rig’s existing setup/alignment process was compared to the new technology system with the following observations: • Using the existing process only 20% of holes surveyed recorded toe points within the +/ 300mm (11.8in) tolerance blast-hole deviation. • The new technology was proven to limit rig setup/alignment error, reducing average blasthole deviation and increasing the number of holes drilled within tolerance by 160%. The increased accuracy reduced stope dilution by reducing over-break of subgrade ore: • Stopes drilled using the new technology recorded 62.6% less average dilution. • This contributed to an overall reduction in dilution for the full year (FY18) of 5 percentage points compared to FY17 - from 22% to 17% (a net decrease of 22.7%). • With the system implemented as standard practice following results of the FY18 trial and continued success, overall dilution for full year FY19 showed continued reduction to 12% Evolution has continued use of the new technology at Cracow, where the improved accuracy has allowed the extraction of narrower stopes where drilling accuracy is critical. Evolution has also deployed the technology at the Mungari operation and has stipulated that the contractor use the technology at the Mt Carlton operation, which is currently under development. Future implementation of the Development Optimiser system should be verified by commencing additional trials to include a larger data base for validating the initial trial results.

This paper describes laboratory and in situ tests and determines a set of parameters for stiffness and strength properties for a weak sedimentary rock mass, the East Coast Bays Formation of Auckland. The parameters derived are discussed in relation to peak strength and in respect of deformation limits associated with sequential excavate and support (SEM) or conventional tunnelling.

As part of the AMIRA P843 project Keeney and Walters (2008) describe how the principal components analysis (PCA) method can be used to identify classes of samples with similar metallurgical characteristics. However PCA does not take account of the location of each sample in 3D space. This paper describes a study to analyse the spatial distributions of the classes and determine appropriate modelling methods to control the estimation of the comminution parameters and mill performance indices into a 3D block model. This includes but is not restricted to geostatistical techniques that are used for grade modelling. The starting point for the study is the class definitions and the regression models for estimating the comminution parameters and performance indices. Each sample is assigned a class and the spatial distribution of each class has been analysed using different techniques including the calculation of variograms. This establishes whether the classes can be used as domain control for estimation into the block model – a procedure similar to using geological rock type domains for controlling the estimation of grades for a resource model. However, standard geostatistical estimation methods such as ordinary kriging assume that the variable being estimated is additive or linear. This assumption is valid for variables such as grade but this is not necessarily the case for the comminution parameters or the performance indices. Therefore the estimation procedure must either use variables that are definitely additive or the effect of potential non-additivity must be tested and accounted for where possible.The results of the study show how performance indices such as recovery, throughput and specific power can be estimated into the block model. This model is then combined with the geological model to provide a multi-parametric model that is used to optimise the mine planning and scheduling activities which can lead to significant improvements in NPV.

This paper presents the positive outcomes on an EPCM project, which was undertaken in a challenging environment, whereby the design team had to generate a design with a number of stringent serviceability criteria, any deviation from which would have had significant implications to the proposed design performance. The success of the design implementation within the tight time frame hinged upon the precise installation by a skilled contractor. The overall objective was achieved as a result of close collaboration between the designer and contractor ensuring all stringent quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) aspects were met and opportunities to optimise design without compromising on performance were identified and implemented, resulting in a cost saving of over A$13 M.CITATION:Narendranathan, S, Thomas, R D H, Bungard, G P, Gumba, V and Barker, C, 2012. A major challenge for closure planning at mining operations below the water table is evaporation from final void pit lakes and concentration of salts, which can impact on downstream groundwater (and surface water) flows and quality. Where such impacts are deemed unacceptable, the closure approach that is often adopted is to infill the final voids with waste rock to above the pre-mining water table to prevent the development of a pit lake and subsequent evaporative losses. BHP Billiton Iron OreÆs Marillana Creek (Yandi) mining operations face these issues. The orebody is a channel iron deposit that forms the major aquifer in the region, which will be completely mined as a series of elongated open pits over tens of kilometres. The major constraint on mine closure planning was the stripping ratio of less than one, which means that there is insufficient waste rock to infill all areas to the pre-mining water table. Hydrogeological investigations and groundwater modelling indicated that standard mine closure approaches would result in pit void lakes becoming saline sinks unless the residual void geometry was optimised to minimise evaporation and maximise throughflow. The solution developed is a cost-effective long-term mine plan that meets all mine closure objectives, and involved:the selective infilling of all pits, largely using run-of-mine waste dumping with limited re-handling; the diversion of the major part of up-catchment creek flows around the mining operations to allow mining of the resource under Marillana Creek crossings, which in turn restricted overall aquifer recharge and reduced the elevation of the long-term water table; the diversion of some minor creek tributary flows into specific locations within the mine path to induce hydraulic gradients to maintain groundwater throughflow and water quality; and close integration of mine plan optimisation (mining and waste dumping schedules) with groundwater modelling scenarios to achieve acceptable environmental outcomes. This approach is designed to result in no reduction in downstream surface water flows or quality, maintenance of adequate downstream groundwater throughflow to support groundwater dependent ecosystems, and no reduction in the beneficial use status of the downstream groundwater resource.
