Upstream embankment raises often represent the lowest cost option for increasing the capacity of tailings storage facilities (TSF), but also pose the highest stability risk due to constructing on top of previously deposited tailings.This paper presents an overview of key aspects in the geotechnical investigation and design of upstream raises and some recent lessons learnt from experience across a number of TSFs in Australia. A summary of recommended field investigation and laboratory testing methods is provided with a focus on collecting quality information for design purposes. A strong focus is given in developing an accurate assessment of pore water pressures, which, if not correctly understood can have disastrous consequences on tailings strength parameter interpretation and wall stability assessment in static and post-seismic conditions.The assessment of the contractive or dilative shearing behaviour of the tailings material and rigorous interpretation of design characteristic values are presented. The recent (2005) amendments to the Resource Management Act 1991 have made it clear that there is no obligation on an applicant to consult. However the importance and value in consulting with the community, particularly before commencing a major project, cannot be understated.   This paper looks at the provisions of the Resource Management Act as they relate to consultation and public participation in the process, and will discuss the benefits of consultation both before an application is filed and following the filing of the application. Engaging with the local community can help shape a project to better fit the community, engender support and address opposition. In short, taking the extra step to what is legally required, can help smooth what is potentially a bumpy road. Examples in practice of the value of consultation are given.

The GRE46 Underground Project lies beneath the environmentally unique and culturally endowed shore of Lake Cowal. The ore body is open both along strike and at depth and is currently defined to a strike length of 1.5km and depth of 800m. The Warraga exploration decline commenced in March 2019 and represents the first stage of the Project, which is expected to underpin production at Cowal Gold Operations (CGO) for a period exceeding 10 years. Mining operations at Cowal commenced in 2005, following a period of over 20 years of exploration and permitting. In 2015 Evolution Mining (Cowal) Pty Limited (Evolution) acquired the operation from Barrick Gold Ltd (“Barrick”). Barrick had a life of mine plan that anticipated a cessation of operations in 2024 at a processing rate not exceeding 7.5 Mtpa. Evolution have grown the regional endowment considerably and have a currently approved mine life out to 2032 with a currently approved maximum processing rate of 9.8 Mtpa. This paper examines the history, current status and future path of one part of that plan, the GRE-46 Underground Project. Topics for discussion include discovery, Mineral Resource growth under different ownership philosophies, planning, permitting and commissioning of an exploration decline and bulk sampling project, and integration with the possible future mine. Environmental sensitivities affecting regulatory approvals, timeframes, technical challenges, opportunities and solutions are discussed, along with the path required to fast-track production from the existing 14Mt, 1.4Moz Mineral Resource while complying with the requirements of modern, responsible project development stewardship.

The application of microwave energy as a substitute for conventional heating has drawn interest from many researchers in extractive metallurgy. Microwaves have a heating effect just as many other forms of radiant energy. Microwaves are able to penetrate the substance at which they are directed and in being absorbed heat the material from the inside. As a result of heat generated in the interior of a particle, microwaves can affect the rupture of a particle (in this case a host ore) and break down the matrix of the particle (host ore) and expose the recoverable mineral to the leaching reagent. Two series of leaching experiments were carried out at temperatures above 90????C using a conventional heater (hot plate) and a modified 850 W, 2.45 Ghz microwave oven. One series of tests was carried out at ambient temperature. A pyritic/arsenopyritic gold concentrate was leached with 3.3 kg/t to 6.8 kg/t NaCN for two hours. The extraction of gold at 6.8 kg/t NaCN was higher in microwave assisted leaching (59 per cent) than the extraction obtained in leaching at conventional heating (39 per cent) and ambient temperature (28 per cent). Extraction of gold was dependent on the size fraction used and was 48 per cent for û75 ¦m, 43 per cent for û90+75 ¦m and 37 per cent for û150 + 90 ¦m size ranges.

Andesites are a major source of aggregate for much of the North Island of New Zealand. There are regional differences with respect to some important properties of the andesites. Some are reactive with cement and are designated as potentially deleterious or deleterious by the concrete industry. Other andesites, particularly those that are slightly altered or weathered, have rather high Plasticity or Clay Indices and perform poorly in road construction.   The performance of the andesites has been investigated and can be shown to be determined by: +        the chemistry of the rock which in turn determines the chemistry of the glass in the rock; +        the presence of large amounts of groundmass glass in the rock; and +        the nature of the superimposed alteration processes. Environment of extrusion and how rapidly the rock has been cooled or chilled are also important as they determine the fabric of the rock and how much glass will be present in the rock.   There are three main types of alteration that affect the quality of the aggregate: 1.   hydrothermal alteration, 2.   late magmatic alteration associated with the devitrification of glass, and 3.   weathering.   Each of these alteration types produces different alteration minerals. In fresh andesites the devitrification of glass has an important affect on the rockÆs properties. The Taranaki andesites are shown to have unusually (in comparison with other North Island andesites) high Na2O contents, held in the groundmass glass, which is the fundamental reason for the high alkali û silica reactivity of these andesites.

"To provide an indication of expected performance of the mine and mill, feasibility studies should include an assessment of the expected day-to-day variability in process plant feed. Attempts to do this based on conventional resource models will be flawed as such studies fail to consider and account for the in-built smoothing (averaging) of input data.This can lead to one of two situations: an expensive, over-engineered process plant that can cope with every possible situation, or operational strategies that fail to manage the natural variability within the orebody and the impact of day-to-day operational decision-making.In both cases the value of the project diminishes through excessive capital costs or reduced throughput or recovery during operations.Unlike conventional estimation techniques, the geostatistical method of conditional simulation can reproduce the inherent variability of the deposit. Once a valid model has been developed, it is possible to analyse the model using a transfer function that simulates the proposed mining processes and provides a representation of the likely variation of mill feed characteristics at any time scale.The case study demonstrates how the proposed mining strategy would result in mill feed being considerably more variable than expected, resulting in poor recovery, low throughput and potential breaches of environmental conditions. Mitigation measures included budgeting for additional mining equipment to enable greater flexibility during mining and revised stockpiling and crusher feed strategies.Awareness of the benefits of modelling the variability of geometallurgical parameters will increase the use of this approach in producing more realistic financial models of expected mine performance at the design stage.CITATION:Shaw, W J, Khosrowshahi, S and Weeks, A, 2013. The Favona low-sulfidation epithermal deposit in the Hauraki Goldfield is less than one kilometre southeast of the world-class Waihi deposit. The veins are hosted by Miocene andesite of the Waipupu Formation, have a total strike length of over 900 m, a vertical extent of at least 350 m and are on average 1-3 m wide. Individual veins have been traced for 200 m with vein widths up to 25 m. The dominant vein textures are massive, crustiform and colloform banded veins and vein breccias, with subsidiary textures including comb, zonal, flamboyant, lattice-bladed, ghost-bladed, microbotryoidal, feathery, ripple and dune, and mosaic. Quartz is the dominant gangue mineral in the veins at Favona. Accessory gangue minerals include pyrite, chlorite, adularia, illite, calcite, and apatite. Electrum is the only gold-bearing mineral and is associated with acanthite, tetrahedrite, pyrite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, and rare galena. Whole rock geochemical analyses indicate that gold grades correlate with textures/vein types. The highest gold and silver grades are associated with vein breccias and banded veins, with the former containing 28 g/t Au and 136 g/t Ag on average. To date, veins with significant base metal sulfide minerals, and massive and crystalline quartz veins lack significant precious metals (Au and Ag), except for one banded base metal sulfide-rich vein at Favona. An overall zonation of the veins exists, with base metal sulfide minerals dominant at depth (1050 m RL) of the system are characterised by massive quartz veins.Fluid inclusions from a total of 31 quartz, amethyst, and platy calcite veins reveal homogenisation temperatures of ~190-250¦C, with final ice melting temperatures between 0.0 and -0.8. Ice melting temperatures correspond to apparent salinities of 18O value of the water that formed these veins is approximately -4.3 per mil, which is similar to meteoric water-dominated, near neutral chloride fluids in geothermal systems in the Taupo Volcanic Zone.

The Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences' Mineral Resources Programme is currently carrying out research under two major projects:   HAREM (Hauraki Andesite Rhyolite Epithennal Mineralisation) The Hauraki Goldfield lies within a belt of andesite-dacite-rhyolite volcanics of Miocene Pliocene age which is underlain by a basement of Mesozoic greywacke. It contains some 50 separate epithermal gold deposits and is a world-class gold and silver producer. The HAREM project is aimed at improving models of the epithermal gold mineralisation, and to better understand the processes and controls of origin, transport and deposition of the gold.   MARGO - (Marlborough Gold) The MARGO project is aimed at determining the geological factors that controlled the formation of the Mesozoic mesothermal gold-antimony-tungsten deposits in the Marlborough Schist belt. Following reconnaissance work on 12 deposits, our current work is concentrated on deposits in the Wakamarina valley.

Oceana Gold (NZ) LtdÆs, Macraes Gold Operation currently has two tailings impoundments, the larger of which covers approximately 75 ha. When an impoundment is temporarily out of use, the surface dries and dust can be blown from the surface to the surrounding area. At present water spraying is used to stabilise the surface, but this is not ideal as Macraes mine can experience water shortages during the summer. This paper examines an alternative method of surface stabilisation using vegetation as a ground cover. The tailings have a low natural fertility, so it is important to determine what will actually grow in the tailings, and whether amendments are necessary. Also important is the effect of the amendments on arsenic mobility in the tailings as the schist rock at Macraes has naturally elevated levels of arsenic. Three plants species, rye corn, barley, and lupin, were grown in metre-deep lysimeters at Macraes mine site. The plants were grown in unaltered tailings, and tailings with one of two amendments added: Bioboost (an organic fertiliser containing biosolids), and superphosphate fertiliser. The leachate from each lysimeter was collected and analysed monthly to determine the extent of arsenic mobility. In addition, laboratory experiments were set up to determine arsenic mobility in tailings with amendments at the centimetre scale.   All plants grew best with the fertiliser amendment, with rye corn growing the best overall. Plants growing in unaltered tailings either barely survived (rye corn, barley) or died (lupin). Plants in the Bioboost amended tailings grew only slightly better than in the unamended tailings. Laboratory experiments indicate that the addition of phosphate fertiliser greatly increases arsenic leaching at the centimetre scale when compared to unamended tailings. The addition of Bioboost only marginally increases arsenic leaching, compared to unamended tailings. This trend has not been repeated in the lysimeter trials on the metre scale over four months. Current results suggest that of the plant types trialed and amendments used, rye corn with superphosphate is the most practical short-term tailings stabilisation method at Macraes.

WMC was a late entrant into Indonesia in mid-1996, but had considerable experience and success in exploring in Asia, particularly the Philippines since 1988. Given the geological similarities to the Philippines and IndonesiaÆs superior æcradle to graveÆ Contract of Work (CoW) tenure system, the entry into Indonesia was a logical decision but nonetheless a result of detailed planning. At the time of WMCÆs entry, Busang in Kalimantan was still a 60 moz wonder and the euphoria of this apparent discovery had overflowed into every aspect of exploration. Many junior mining companies and tenement speculators were clamouring for properties in Kalimantan, whilst other serious and capable explorers had to compete for properties and exploration personnel in an era of high and often unrealistic expectations. The picture in late-1998 and through 1999 is dramatically different, as the worldwide downturn in the price of most metals coincides with financial and social crises throughout most Asian countries. The impact of this has been particularly severe in Indonesia and when coupled with the negative sentiment of the Busang fraud has resulted in an exodus of junior companies and also some of the majors. This is understandable given the much publicised social unrest, uncertainty of government, mooted changes to the eighth generation CoW, increasing illegal mining and heightened community expectations. The reality however is somewhat different and although clearly a crisis in many respects, it is also a time of great opportunity.

The Top End of the Northern Territory lies in the monsoonal zone and receives rain during the November-April period. Initially, at the start of the wet season, rain storms are localised, but, following the descent of the monsoonal trough from below the equator, widespread rain occurs. Overflow incidents at mine sites tend to arise midway through the annual wet season when excess water accumulated in ponds begins to discharge to the external environment. Remote-access monitoring may be undertaken at mine sites using equipment to continuously measure water quality parameters with storage of the information on a data logger. The data is then retrieved by visiting the site and transferring it to a portable computer or by remotely accessing the system using a telemetry system and transmission via telephone, VHF/UHF or satellite. Such systems are readily available and vary in cost depending on the sophistication of the data transfer system. Available sensors for continuous monitoring include those for conductivity, temperature, pH and other ion selective electrodes, eg nitrate, and water level. Of these variables, conductivity is most useful due to its inherent accuracy and stability of reading. Remote monitoring capability is able to provide: (i) more intensive monitoring of key issues; (ii) more timely information; (iii) correct perspective on the degree of environmental problem; and (iv) information from remote locations, which would be difficult to monitor by more conventional methods. Examples are given for applications of continuously logged measurement of conductivity of waters discharging to drains and in creeks at Pine Creek, Ranger, Nabarlek and Woodcutters mines in the Northern Territory. These applications demonstrate the timeliness of the continuous monitoring technique.

The Onemana prospect is located on the eastern Coromandel Peninsula, North Island, New Zealand. Systematic exploration involving surface geological mapping, geophysics, rock and soil geochemistry, reverse-circulation and diamond drilling has identified a number of important features of a fossil hydrothermal system at Onemana. This relatively intact gold mineralised system is hosted within a sequence of rhyolitic volcanics and volcaniclastics, overlain by lake sediments, sinters and hydrothermal eruption breccia. The system lies within a graben/half graben bounded by major NE-trending faults which form the approximate boundaries to hydrothermal alteration. Rock and soil geochemistry indicate a broad zone of anomalous gold, silver, arsenic, mercury and antimony. Overlapping elevated rock and soil gold anomalies indicate strongest mineralisation occurs over two zones of hydrothermal brecciation named 'Breccia Knob' and 'Western Ridge'. Geophysical data obtained from Gradient Array Resistivity and Ground Magnetics have been used to produce anomaly maps. The terrain corrected resistivity plot shows a number of well defined linear resistivity anomalies which are believed to represent large silicified and quartz veined bodies at relatively shallow depths. The strongest of these anomalies correspond with 'Breccia Knob' and 'Western Ridge'. Reverse-circulation and diamond drilling targeting these resistivity and geochemical anomalies has confirmed wide intervals of quartz veining, silicification and gold mineralisation. Petrologic data based on drill samples indicates the existence of a laterally extensive gold bearing epithermal system. Hydrothermal alteration is thought to have been caused by strongly convecting, two-phase (boiling), near-neutral chloride fluids which persisted at high temperatures (170 - 220¦C) to the paleosurface. A geological model is postulated of a large, complex, hydrothermal system developed in a shallow lake or marginal lake environment created by rifting and graben development within a recently extinct rhyolitic volcanic centre. Geothermal activity alternated between relatively quiescent periods of unrestricted fluid upflow and sinter development interspersed with violent hydrothermal eruptions caused by near surface silica capping and overpressuring above a major fluid conduit centred under 'Breccia Knob'.  Opportunities for precious metal mineralisation are evident from drilling to date. Upflow of near-neutral chloride fluids to shallow depths favours the presence of strongly mineralised stockworks at relatively shallow depths. Periodic hydrothermal eruptions would have caused fracturing and rapid depressurisation of the hydrothermal system, strongly favouring the precipitation of gold from solution both near surface and within feeder-vein systems at depth.

In 2012 the Bureau of Meteorology, under the banner of the Water Accounting Standards Board, released the Australian Water Accounting Standard 1 (AWAS 1). This standard has been in development since 2007 with key milestones being the release of the Preliminary Australian Water Accounting Standard in 2009 and the exposure draft of the Australian Water Accounting Standard in 2010. Throughout this period, the Minerals Council of AustraliaÆs Water Accounting Framework has developed concurrently with the Australian standards and the standards have informed elements of the framework. However, the framework is not identical to the standard as the objectives between the two are different. The objective of the Water Accounting Framework is to create consistency in water reporting of the minerals industry and to assist companies reporting to corporate sustainability initiatives. The objective of AWAS 1 is to provide information to water management bodies to facilitate decisions about the allocation of water resources. Companies are to report on an annual basis - not only physical flows of water but contractual requirements to supply and obtain water - regardless of whether the transaction has been fulfilled in the reporting period. In contrast, the Water Accounting Framework only reports on flows that have physically happened. The paper will provide summary information on aspects of AWAS 1 that are most relevant to the minerals industry, show the alignment and differences between AWAS 1 and the Water Accounting Framework and explain how to obtain the information for the AWAS 1 reporting statements.CITATION:Danoucaras, A N and Woodley, A, 2013. Pre-concentration of low grade ores via the rejection of low/no value materials based on fragment size is the subject of many published papers and studies over the past decade. However, the possibility of upgrading should not limited to low grade ores given the high cost of capital, energy, water, reagents, and ultimately tailings storage across the mining industry. Mining and processing facilities at Olympic Dam consist of an: 1) underground mine where ore is extracted via sublevel open stoping and 2) integrated processing plant located on the surface which produces Cu-cathode, Au-Ag bullion and uranium oxide concentrate. Blasted ore is trucked/trained to underground crushers which produce an ore feed with a product size P80 = -145 mm. Crushed ore is then hoisted to the surface and delivered to the ROM pads via an overland conveyor. The typical copper grade of mill feed is approximately 2 wt%. A rapid assessment of the potential to upgrade Olympic Dam mill feed prior to the ROM pads via rejection of low value materials based on fragment size was completed using existing data. Three separate datasets were utilised to assess the deportment of Cu, U, Au across size ranges of 200 mm down to sub-8 m. Cumulative grade vs cumulative mass distribution graphs for each element were produced. This data clearly demonstrates that Cu, U, Au grades remain constant down to ~212 m, which happens to be the liberation size of the sulfides. Hence, no potential to upgrade the ore stream via rejection of +200 mm - to ~212 m sized materials prior to milling. Mineralisation within the Olympic Dam Fe-oxide Cu-U-Au-Ag deposit (IOCG) occurs as disseminated sulfide grains within granite- to hematite-rich breccias. The typical sulfide grain size is sub-200 m that supports the outcomes of the grade deportment by fragment size study.

The development of the Australasian Code for Reporting of Identified Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves is a significan step towards informing the financial community and the public about the future profitability and risks of investing in resource companies. The Code is also important from the accountants' point of view because it provides them with a well-defined bash for assigning costs or attributing value to the assets of resource companies and hence improving their financial reports. Although reporting to the public is ultimately the responsibility of management, accountants, like geologists, are frequently required to provide information for inclusion in these reports. Jr the last ten years, there has been a considerable refinement in the reporting of mineral resources which can be attributed mainly tc the progress made towards developing the Code. It seems tha the classification and terminology that the geologists have developed are widely used in the annual reports. However, little progress has been made by accountants in improving the financia information. The purpose of this paper is twofold: (a) to outline briefl) some of the major problems in accounting and reporting fo; mining companies and; (b) to examine the potential contribution of the Code in solving those problems.

For any resource evaluation program, the collection and processing of representative samples for assaying is critical. Sampling, sample preparation and assay protocols must be designed to suit the style of orebody in question. The a priori need is for the characterisation of mineralisation type(s) and domain definition. The proportion and size of gold particles has a direct impact on the effectiveness of sampling protocols employed. Mineralogical studies focusing on gold particle deportment, size and distribution are required. Key issues are the presence of gold particle clustering and proportion of coarse versus fine gold. High-resolution X-ray computed tomography (HRXCT) is a radiographic technique that produces high-resolution 3D computerised models of in situ objects based on density distribution. The ævirtualÆ specimens are made up of voxels, the 3D equivalent of pixels each assigned a grey value based on X-ray absorption. This paper presents the results of recent research on the imaging of in situ particles in coarse gold-bearing ore samples from the Nalunaq mine, southern Greenland. The samples used were previously well-characterised through mineralogical and metallurgical testing, and serve to test the HRXCT methodology. A series of in situ pull tests has been conducted to determine the holding capacity of the standard SS46 Split Set Stabilisers. The experiments have been conducted in a wide range of geological conditions ranging from bedded rock to blocky ground. The results presented in this paper indicate that cement grouted split sets bolts are likely to provide up to three times the initial bond strength per metre of embedment length provided by the ungrouted bolts. The increased load transfer capacity of the grouted bolts provides an alternative for permanent excavation support using split set stabilisers.

WMC Resources Pty Ltd û Copper Uranium Division operates the large underground Olympic Dam Mine at Roxby Downs, South Australia. These operations mine and process the ore to produce refined copper, uranium oxide, gold and silver. In mid-1996, the company committed to the Olympic Dam Expansion Project (OEP) to expand production from 3.0 million tonnes per annum of ore (85 000 tonnes per annum of copper metal) to over 9.0 million tonnes per annum of ore (over 200 000 tonnes per annum of copper metal). Along with the increase in the ore production capacity of the underground mine and the surface ore handling and processing facilities, expansion of the backfill system was required. The target backfill placement rate was 2.0 million cubic metres of backfill per annum which was to be predominantly delivered as cemented aggregate fill (CAF). This paper discusses the engineering activities undertaken to assess and change the method of designing the required strength of fill exposures. In addition, the operational changes that were introduced to achieve the required fill quantities and the mix designs to meet the specified strengths, including the use of alternate binders, are discussed. This work resulted in a large increase in the fill placement rate and a reduction in the overall unit cost of fill.
