Two quantitative methods for Mineral Resource classification have been applied to a copper skarn deposit beneath a large open pit that is mining a world-class porphyry complex. A drill hole spacing study (DHSS) using the single block kriging method (SBK) and a conditional simulation method (CS) were applied to the skarn deposit and the results compared. Inputs to both processes included the proposed mining rate and stope designs to estimate the likelihood of achieving grade and metal production targets. Mineral Resource classification of the deposit considers the relative precision of tons, grade and metal predictions over quarterly and annual production periods. These relative precision estimates are calculated at 90 per cent confidence interval (CI). The SBK method represented the production period as a single large block. Kriging estimates were performed in the large block for various synthetic drill hole grids, and the estimation errors derived. The error was assumed to be normally distributed due to the large block size and quantity of samples, allowing CIs to be deduced. The CS method followed a conventional sequential Gaussian simulation workflow where grades were simulated with a 5 ft × 5 ft × 5 ft grid node spacing inside mineralisation domains. Each realisation was then averaged up to monthly production volumes represented by a combination of designed stopes, and the coefficient of variation (CV) for the averaged grade was calculated. CI on the relative precision of grade predictions were then deduced from the CVs. The two methods produced similar results; despite being calculated independently. CS results were used to report uncertainty in the proposed life-of-mine plan and highlight areas for additional drilling. SBK results were used as the basis for Mineral Resource classification as this method has been previously applied to the skarn deposit.

Northparkes is located 27 km north of the township of Parkes in central New South Wales, Australia. The operations consist of underground block cave mines and an ore processing plant, which produces high-grade copper and gold concentrate. Production is currently sourced from the E48 Lift 1 block cave mine and open cut stockpiles. Mining commenced at Northparkes in 1994 as an open cut operation. Underground block cave mining began in 1997. Northparkes was the first mine in Australia to use the highly efficient block cave mining method, which relies on gravity and natural rock stresses to fragment and recover the ore.The E48 extraction level is located approximately 581 m below surface and consists of ten extraction drives and 214 drawpoints. Several stress measurements carried out at various levels in both E26 and E48 indicated a low underground regional stress environment and a low to moderate stress state in the E48 orebody. The E48 block used a post undercut strategy that was initiated in 2009, with production commencing in September 2010 and cave-through to the surface occurring approximately four months later in January 2011. Changes to the cut-off grade and fixed prices meant that Northparkes was able to develop an additional two drives to the north of the existing cave and one additional drive to the south. Modelling of the cavability of the additional drives indicated that the cave would not readily propagate to sufficient height of draw to mobilise the ore and tended to arch over to the existing cave shape. Based on modelling and a desire to reduce the risk of the project, preconditioning was adopted. Along with the requirement of safely hydrofracturing an active cave, a measure of the success of the preconditioning was desired. Few block cave operations have developed extension drives adjacent to existing caves.This paper summarises the lessons learnt from the development of this extension project, with a specific focus on ground control and monitoring.CITATION:Snyman, L, Webster, S and Samosir, J, 2016. Environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors have always been important to the minerals industry and is now considered one of our most important opportunities (and risks). Getting it right from the beginning is critical for the minerals industry, and that starts with mineral exploration. Exploration, or the process of investigation of an economic mineral deposit, is generally low impact and short-term. Exploration operations vary in size and scale and often shift priority, focus and location relatively quickly. Australia is a highly regulated jurisdiction with different regulatory systems and requirements in every state and territory. Most mineral exploration is undertaken by junior exploration companies or ‘explorers’. Exploration companies are lean operations with limited staffing and resources, traditionally with no income apart from funds raised or work through partnerships. Funds are tight and administrative investment is minimised so that investment into activity on the ground is maximised. All these variables mean that understanding and implementation of ESG frameworks for an exploration company can be challenging. ESG is a fast-moving sector with currently multiple frameworks and reporting standards. Interest from community and government stakeholders as well as investors and off-take partners has been growing, with mandatory reporting soon to be implemented. The upcoming changes to the JORC Code will ensure that ESG considerations will be a key component of all public reporting. Resources have been developed to support explorers implement, manage and report on ESG considerations. Due to their scale, agility and direct importance of land access and social licence, many explorers are not the ‘cowboys’ (or ‘cowpersons’) of the industry, but industry leaders in ESG. Strong interest and leadership have led to innovative practices and strongly embedded vertical frameworks that directly contribute to social licence to operate.

New data on the geology of the Late Jurassic to Holocene sediments cover of the World and associated mineral resources (oil, gas, ferromanganese nodules, ores of massive sulphides and other metals) have been compilled in the Atlas at scale 1:25,000,000 and 1:10,000,000. The work was performed by scientists from four Institutes of Russia (VNIIzarubezhgeologia, VNIIoceangeologia, Vernadsky Institute of Geochemistry and Analytical Chemistry of theRussian Academy of Sciences and Geological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences). The Atlas shows variation of thickness and formational composition of the large complexes (Upper Jurassic-Early Cretaceous, Upper Cretaceous Eocene, Oligocene-Neogene, Pliocene-Pleistocene), distribution of oil/gas and ore deposits in each complex, data of deepsea drilling (leg 1-130),  thermo-pressure condition in the sedimentary basins within Circum-Pacific Rim.

TheFiji Islands are remnants of a once continuous Solomon-Vanuatu-Fiji-Tonga volcanic arc (the Vitiaz arc), located at the boundary between the Indian-Australian and Pacific plates. They record a history of: (i)                  arc volcanism the late Eocene to late Miocene, (ii)                an extensive magmatic response to arc rifting (5.5 - 3.0 Ma) during which volcanism was dominated by shoshonitic to tholeiitic basalts, and as rifting continued, (iii)               a transition from arc to intraplate volcanism.   The Hunter Ridge-Hunter Fracture Zone separates the inactive South Fiji Basin from the actively spreading North Fiji Basin, and has been considered to be a transform zone, almost parallel to the motion vector of the Australian plate. However rocks dredged during the 1993 æAlizeÆ cruise, from along the northern part of the Hunter Ridge are typical arc tholeiites, and therefore demand that subduction has occurred beneath the Hunter Ridge sometime during the last ~5 Ma. The Kadavu Island group, south westernmost Fiji, lies at the north-eastern end of the Hunter Ridge-Hunter Fracture Zone, and possibly results from oblique subduction of South Fiji Basin oceanic crust, which may have accompanied the anticlockwise rotation of Fiji during opening of the North Fiji Basin. These islands consist dominantly of 3.4 - 0.5 Ma old medium-high K andesites and dacites, with many traits typical of subduction-related volcanics, ie predominance of intermediate members (55 - 65% SiO2) no Fe enrichment, TiO2<1%, and negative Nb-Ta anomalies. These features contrast strongly with volcanics from elsewhere in Fiji around this time, where volcanic centres produced Om-like intraplate olivine basalts. The Kadavu Islands become gradually younger to the southwest, and show a significant decrease in K2O with time. The north easternmost islands (Astrolabe islands) containing the oldest rocks (~3 Ma) have shoshonitic affinities and are considered to be of similar age and composition to the youngest shoshonites found elsewhere in Fiji.

Use of Impact Crushing for the Enrichment of Low-Grade Colemanite Concentrates This paper presents the results of an investigation into the enrichment of -25+3 mm low grade colemanite concentrates exploiting differential breakage properties of various minerals associated within the ore sample. Boric acid production process requires concentrates containing at least 42 per cent B2O3, hence concentrates below this grade either stock piled or further treated to increase B2O3 content. The low grade concentrate is obtained as a by-product of Emet Colemanite Concentrator and the B2O3 content may vary around 37 - 38 per cent. The sample used in the experimental studies assays 37.52 per cent B2O3. In the experimental procedures the sample was crushed using a laboratory size horizontal shaft impact crusher and the products were classified into different size fractions by screening so that any improvement by size could be observed. In the tests the effects of parameters such as the revolution speed of the crusher and heat treatment was checked. Test results prove that boron contents show a tendency to increase as the particle size decreases. As a result of the experimental studies a colemanite concentrate assaying 42.13 per cent B2O3 is produced with 76.55  per cent recovery. Arsenic content is seen to change inversely proportional with the B2O3 content of the concentrate such that it drops from 1016 ppm from the as received sample to 676 ppm in the concentrate.

Any hypothesis for the origin of the Otago gold-quartz lodes must account for the following observations. 1. Southeast of Glenorchy, where the schists hosting the lodes are comparatively unaffected by Neogene Alpine Fault deformation, the dominant strike of the vein systems is NW-SE, parallel to the axis of greatest post-metamorphic uplift in the Otago Schist belt (Paterson, 1986). 2. The lodes are fault-hosted, with some developed along steep, low-displacement normal faults (eg Barewood, Bendigo, Nenthorn), implying NE-SW extension, and some developed along low-angle thrusts (eg Macraes) implying, in apparent contradiction, NE-SW contraction (Teagle et al, 1990). 3. The mineralising fluid was of metamorphic origin (McKeag and Craw, 1989), but while some of the lodes developed in a mesothermal environment at considerable depth (eg ~10 km for Macraes), others appear to have formed at very shallow depth (eg <1 km for Nenthorn) (Craw and Norris, 1988). 4. The timing of the mineralisation is generally poorly constrained but postdates the main Rangitata schist metamorphism. It probably initiated during early Cretaceous exhumation and unroofing of the schist belt (140 - 120 Ma?) and may have continued well into the Tertiary (Craw, 1989). Estimates for the relative ages of the different lodes are largely speculative but, based on pressure estimates from fluid inclusion studies, Macraes likely represents the deepest and oldest lode system while Nenthorn (just 12 km to the southwest) is perhaps the shallowest and youngest (Craw and Norris, 1988).

Aurum Reef Resources is a provincially owned unlisted public company which holds a number of prospecting licences over Otago hard rock historically active minesites. The Bullendale Licence 31 1845 was applied for in 1985, granted 1991, including a DoC special condition allowing re-opening of the historic workings. The underground workings were commenced in 1862 and up to the mine's closure in 1906 some 40 000 ounces were produced at an average grade of 15.5 g Au/t. The purpose of the summer 1991 work programme was to enter the workings in an attempt to observe and sample the mullock between the lodes operated by the early miners. This objective was achieved on the third attempt. Samples were taken and subsequently a contract geologist resampled the workings and prepared a report indicating the Bullendale lode zone to be generally mineralised. Mullock interlode and schist foot-wall consistently returned assays over 0.5 g/t.

The Roy Hill Project is an independent integrated port, rail and mine development in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. The bankable feasibility study for the project was completed in January 2011 by Roy Hill Holdings Pty Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Hancock Prospecting Pty Ltd. The Project will deliver 55 Mt/a of premium quality iron ore to a rapidly growing market with a mine life of over 27 years. This study is based on exploiting a 1.2 Bt bedded resource of microplaty haematite-rich Marra Mamba, from which 562 Mt of reserves has been delineated to date. A further 1.1 Bt resource of detritals and low grade bedded is proposed to be mined once the bedded high grade resource is depleted. Roy Hill lump and fi ne ore products will compete strongly with other Pilbara products. As a low cost producer, Roy Hill is on track to capture four per cent of the global seaborne traded iron ore market. The project decision to proceed is targeted for Q2 2011 to enable first ore on ship by Q2 2014.

The emergence of China as a global economic power has not been without its birth pangs and the current coal market is testimony to this. Traditionally the coal market has been controlled by mature economies that functioned along balanced lines of supply and demand. The emergence of China and India as major forces in the international market has shifted this balance of power from mature economies to the developing economies of China and India. Of late Chinese Central Government policy has caused wide swings in the supply of Chinese coking coal and thermal coal to the international Asian markets. This has resulted in huge increases in demand for coal from producers in Australia, Canada, Indonesia, USA and Russia. Additionally since the late 1990s the liberalised Chinese economy has been growing by between nine to 12 per cent per annum. The corresponding rise in the standard of living of their 1.4 billion people has resulted in a strong demand for raw materials, initially met by domestic production and more recently met by the importation of raw materials including iron ore, oil, coking coal and thermal coal. Commensurate with this growth in China has been the emergence of India (pop one billion) as another major developing economy in the region. Whilst the Indian standard of living is lower than that of the Chinese, this subcontinent still has some 300 million people with middle class consumption demands. India is a major importer of oil, coking coal and thermal coal. It exports iron ore to China with growth parallel to China (seven to nine per cent per annum). These combined new demands from India and China have put unprecedented pressure on the global supply of coking and thermal coals. These pressures are reflected in the current world spot prices for coking and thermal coals which are at historically high levels. Whilst current demand from China and India is high it is anticipated that new projects will partially satisfy this increasing demand. Expectations are that overall thermal and coking coal prices will rise steadily. This paper seeks to identify the potential effects of Chinese and Indian economic growth on the international markets for coal.

A number of mineral deposits occur in close proximity to the Pacific plate fronts. Among these deposits are gold-silver and the base metal sulphide deposits of copper, zinc and lead. Gold deposits that commonly occur in these areas are of hydrothermal origin. Of these the epithermal deposits have attracted the attention of the exploration geologists as well as the metallurgists. One vital aspect of the activity of the geologists is the development of models for epithermal gold mineralisation in the Pacific Rim. These models can also be used by metallurgists for predicting gold extraction processes. This paper reviews the mineralogy, fineness and the host minerals of gold and examines the data in the light of gold mineralisation in the southwest Pacific Rim. The gold mineralisation models proposed for the Pacific Rim have been used to predict gold extraction processes suitable for the various mineralisation types. Discussed also are the mineralisation and treatment processes of some selected epithermal gold deposits and gold-rich porphyry copper deposits in Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Fiji and New Zealand.

Cretaceous to Cenozoic sedimentary basins in Western Southland include a wide range of non-marine and marine sediments, in a structurally complex setting dominated by major fault systems. A reassessment of their mineral potential confirms large quantities of nonmetallic minerals (limestone, aggregate, marl), and smaller reserves of bituminous coal, lignite, clays, and oil shale. Hydrocarbon potential is largely untested. Metallic minerals are present in trace amounts, apart from platinum group minerals and some detrital gold. In the offshore area, seismic data suggest the hydrocarbon potential is significant. The Orepuki area has the most interest onshore.

Indonesia over the last 15 years has experienced a surge in coal exploration, which has led to the development of a major export industry. This coal exploration has improved the understanding of the geology of the Indonesian coal deposits. The main economic coal deposits are of Eocene and Miocene to Pliocene age, which mainly occur in Kalimantan and Sumatra and were formed from peat deposits in an equatorial paleoclimate similar to that prevailing today. Some of these peats were domed peats, which grew above the normal water tables, under a climate of year-round rainfall; these peats grew above the level at which waterborne mineral matter can enter the system, resulting in low ash and sulphur, and locally very thick coal. It is believed that such peats have formed the unusually thick, low ash, and low sulphur Miocene coals of Indonesia. Coal deposits of Eocene age are typically characterised by thinner seams, with relatively higher contents of ash and sulphur. The Miocene coals and Eocene coals both appear to have formed in lacustrine, coastal plain or deltaic depositional environments, similar to the modern peat-forming environments of eastern Sumatra and parts of Kalimantan. The Eocene coals formed mainly in extensional tectonic settings. Miocene - Pliocene coal deposits formed in a range of tectonic settings; the most significant, for large economic coal deposits, are the foreland basin setting of the large Neogene coal deposits of South Sumatra.

Concerns regarding the uncertainty of stope dilution at MMG Dugald River Underground Mine led to a trial stoping program to acquire full-scale comprehensive geotechnical information and to test the validity of the geotechnical and mining parameters. Given that stope production drilling and blasting is a key parameter that influences dilution a detailed stope blast vibration project was implemented. The stoping trial consisted of 19 stopes, a combination of both sublevel open stoping and longitudinal and transverse stopes, of which five were monitored for blast vibrations.The blast vibration project utilised 20 triaxial geophones and five triaxial accelerometers installed in the hanging wall of five monitored stopes. For each stope fired, full blast waveforms were recorded along with detailed information of the blast design. Analysis of the blast vibrations used the Holmberg-Persson approach, with potential damage determined by the relative (Holmberg-Persson) K values.The project identified the benefit of parallel, breakthrough slot holes in reducing blast vibration damage. The results show that radial rings toeing or stabbing into the stope wall lead to higher vibrational energy yield which contributed to increased overbreak. Hanging wall overbreak, by comparison, with parallel, breakthrough blastholes with 1 m standoff, combined with lower density explosive charging (0.8 EP) and increased delays limited blast vibration damage. A number of ring burdens from 1.4 m to 2.5 m were monitored with no difference in terms of energy yield being identified. Changes to the stope drill and blast design are suggested to better control the large blast vibrations and recommendations from this project have been implemented into future mine design and planning.CITATION:Hassell, R, Villaescusa, E, de Vries, R and Player, J, 2015. An overview is given of two new developments in mine atmospheric monitoring. A new personal dust monitor (PDM) that gives real-time respirable dust readings is discussed. The unit is mounted within the minerÆs cap lamp battery and internally measures the true particle mass of dust collected on its filter. Samples are available for later mineralogical analysis and results do not exhibit the same sensitivity to water spray as optically-based measurement approaches. The technique achieves microgram-level mass resolution even in the hostile mine environment and reports dust loading data on a continuous basis. The monitor has been evaluated under an Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) grant and is being adopted for statutory mine respirable dust determinations in the United States (US). The monitor has particular application for determining location of high dust sources. It can evaluate the efficiency of engineering means of suppression and other approaches to reducing dust levels. It has been recognised that the PDMÆs unique measurement approach has application to allow real-time atmospheric diesel particulate matter (DPM) monitoring. The industry has no real-time atmospheric DPM monitor at present. Recent surveys in New South Wales and Queensland show significant numbers of miners continue to face full shift DPM exposures in excess of internationally accepted levels. Real-time DPM monitoring will allow the industry to pinpoint high exposure zones where a number of trucks and other vehicles work in areas of poor ventilation. Knowledge of high DPM concentration zones allows efficient modification of work practices to reduce underground minersÆ exposure. Approaches to uses of the DPM form of the monitor and the design of tag boards are discussed. Some outcomes from mine tests with both these new instruments are given.

THE de-silverizing of base bullion at the Port Pirie works is carried out in accordance with the principles of the well-known Parkes process. The base bullion produced by the blast furnace department carries (apart from silver values) impurities, the chief of which are copper, antimony, and arsenic. In order to more clearly indicate the grade of the base bullion, the following analysis, representative of a half-year's production of base bullion, is submitted...Before proceeding with the actual operation of de-silverizing, it is necessary that the impurities, copper, antimony, and arsenic, should be eliminated. This is accomplished in the following steps :- (1) Removal of Coppel - Copper is largely present in the base bullion as dissolved sulphide, and this is removed by liquation in a reverberatory type furnace, of which the following are the essential details :-Working temperature 7500 to 8500 C.Coal consumption per 24 hours 2 tons.The hearth of the furnace is encased in a steel tank 22 ft. 4 in. long by 13 ft. 4 in. wide by 2 ft. 10 in. deep; the bottom of the tank is covered by a depth of composition conforming to the invert :-Cement 39 cwt.Brick dust 8.4 tons.Fireclay 0.6 tons.Sand 0.6 tons...

Belt conveyor transfers are the most likely location for high wear rates and failures. Belt transfers are necessary to change the direction of conveyed material and will remain a part of belt conveyor systems into the future. Burden being accelerated due to fall and changes in direction from one system to the next, prevents steady state flow which introduces component fatigue. The conveyor belt is considered the greatest cost item over the life of a belt conveyor system and consumes considerable downtime to replace, therefore a financial incentive exists to preserve this high-cost item. Other issues created at the transfer include health risks of uncontained dust and product losses due to spillage. Additional consideration to support the belt is one way to improve the life of components and contain dust within the transfer chute. The humble impact cradle/bed has changed little over the years whilst conveyor systems have achieved ever greater flow rates. Further development of the impact cradle is an opportunity to reduce maintenance costs and increase uptime. The peak technology on the market for conventional impact belt support is the dynamic impact cradle, which ensures the belt support area under the chute allows for some dynamic travel, whilst also maintaining a consistent skirt board area. The impact energy at a transfer when installed with Kinder Australia’s dynamic impact belt support system was measured to further understand the forces involved and how they compare with static belt support systems. Adding further dynamic capacity to the load zone has been shown to increase belt life by at least 30 per cent. Other components also benefit from reducing impact energy in the transfer and the incorporation of polyurethane bushes at roller supports has been employed further increase roller and frame life. Kinder Australia has developed a unique and innovative range of belt support technologies that further promote dynamic travel whilst maintaining a consistent skirt board area without a significant increase in belt-friction tension. In this paper the system of an operative expert estimation of innovative policy of mining enterprise technological development on sustainable development principles, created in the laboratory of economic analysis, planning and management of Mining Institute after D A Kunayev is represented. It is based on application of technology of satellite navigation and global positioning system (GPS). It allows to estimate the geotechnological complex functioning efficiency in the automated mode and on the basis of the obtained results to develop a complex of management measures on the competitiveness increase, realised by means of the automated corporative management system of geotechnological complex. The estimation of complex competitiveness is carried out on such basic aspects, as: technical, technological, organisational, ecological and economic as all of it give certain expenses and influence on complex overall performance. The major difference of the given approach is its realisation within the limits of the automated corporative management system of geotechnological complexes. It is based the fact that data of monitoring of complex's work will provide a sustainable development of geotechnological complex of mining enterprise.
