Solutions of copper(II) sulphate in acidified aqueous acetonitrile leach copper from copper-lead matte derived from the drossing of lead with sulphur to produce solutions of copper(I) sulphate. The reactivity of the matte constituents towards copper(II) sulphate is Cu2S> PbS > CuS > > Pb. According to the leach conditions, part or ,all of the copper may be leached 'leaving a residue of CuS/PbS, or S/CuS/PbS04, or S/PbS04, to be recycled to the lead smelter. Complete extraction of the copper requires leaching with oxygen which occurs under mild conditions in the presence of acetonitrile and sulphuric acid in water. Copper is selectively recovered as a pure product by electrochemical or thermal disproportionation of copper(I) sulphate solutions. A notional process is proposed.

The Taharoa ironsand deposit covers approximately 16 km2 and is located 144 km south of Auckland on the west coast of the North Island, New Zealand. The heavy mineral-rich sands predominantly contain titanomagnetite, ilmenite and hematite, along with lesser amounts of amphiboles, pyroxenes, and feldspars. Throughout the Taharoa mine site 142 samples were collected of which approximately 25 samples were used in mineralogical analyses of the magnetic, heavy non-magnetic and light non-magnetic fractions. Mineralogical and petrographic analyses confirmed the high abundance of homogeneous magnetite and magnetite containing ilmenite exsolution lamellae which have oxidised to hematite. A limited number of sand samples were collected from Taranaki beaches. Petrography reveals exsolution textures of magnetite and ilmenite (now hematite), and homogenous magnetite grains similar to those observed at Taharoa. Petrographic analyses from previous research projects were also closely investigated in order to make mineralogical comparisons from along the west coast of the North Island and with other potential source areas. The origin of detrital magnetite grains along the west coast of the North Island is generally presumed to be the eroded volcanic cones of the Egmont volcanoes and active and dormant volcanoes of the central North Island. Electron microprobe analyses of magnetite grains from Taranaki beach samples reveal TiO2 values of between 1.5 and 120 per cent. MgO and A12O3 contents also vary widely from 0.75 to 6.5 per cent. This large variability may reflect different volcanic eruptions, the presence of exsolution textures or alternative source areas for these magnetite grains. Geochemical results from the Taharoa mine site correlate with the Taranaki beach samples suggesting that the Egmont volcanoes are certainly one source area. Variability in XRF results, especially Fe and Ti contents (9.04 - 59.22 and 0.80 - 4.64 respectively), from the magnetic and heavy non-magnetic fractions likely reflect the detrital nature of this deposit.

The evaluation of historical goldfields has been common over the past 15 years, reflecting changing economic conditions, improvements in knowledge and technology and lack of greenfield sites. Many goldfields comprise narrow gold-quartz veins, which are structurally complex with an irregular distribution of gold, have variable geometry and architecture and display late deformational effects. The study of historical mine records can be an important tool during early and advanced project evaluation, since it contributes to understanding the orebody, exploration target size and setting expectations. Mine records include documents such as plans, sections, reports, news cuttings, production tabulations, etc. A major advantage for the modern explorer is the capability of computer modelling to display this data in 3D. Historical records can give the explorer substantial information on various deposit characteristics, not least grade and geological continuity, geometry and architecture, mineralogy, metallurgical properties, bulk density and ground conditions. From an evaluation perspective, historical records can be used to support a Mineral Resource estimate, though its application will depend upon the quality and quantity of the data and judgement of the Competent Person. Effectively used, historical records can reduce geological uncertainty and focus evaluation efforts û thus reducing project risk.

Traditional iron ore wet beneficiation plants are large multilevel structures, often integrated into centralised processing plants. They are characterised by sizeable footprints, substantial water and power consumption, inflexible design and low scalability. Significant design changes that address these issues need to be made before relocatable modular plants become feasible. Firstly, large amounts of processing water are required in standard wet plants, so it is vital that water consumption is reduced to an absolute minimum. Secondly, the process of depositing tailings into tailings storage facilities (TSFs) is environmentally destructive, consumes significant power and requires lengthy approvals to be completed. Thirdly, modules need to be easily and quickly relocatable.The solution to reducing water usage and eliminating TSF requirements is accomplished by providing a tailings dewatering and dry-stacking capability into a separate module. This equipment needs to dewater tailings to a point (typically below 20 per cent moisture) where dry stacking becomes possible – design is mainly driven by material rheology and particle size distribution (PSD). In this respect, a flexible and scalable strategy is employed to dewatering modules, allowing a variety of components such as dewatering cyclone clusters, paste thickeners, fine mesh vibrating screens and filter presses to be used to achieve the necessary moisture level, enabling the final dry stacking to be accomplished by a simple telescopic stacking system. Plant relocatability also requires modules to comply with mass and dimensional constraints, as well as ‘plug and play’ ease-of-use features.For coarse particle upgrade, jigs provide a low-cost and effective solution, whereas fine and ultra-fine Fe units can be recovered using Wet High Intensity Magnetic Separation (WHIMS). Recently, sensor sorting – a dry process using X-ray fluorescence, X-ray transmission, laser or other sensors – has begun to make an impact in coarse particle separation, although capacities are still low. The overall objective of a plant is to provide an Fe upgrade of four to five per cent with a feed of up to 4 Mt/a and a recovery of approximately 50 per cent.CITATION:Graham, T, 2017. In the Broken Hill South mine tile practice of issuing to the miner a quantity of fuse and a box of caps from which he made up the "rods" required for a particular blast, has been abandoned. Instead, capping stations have been established, and the miner can now obtain, from the magazines, fuses cut to accurate lengths with the detonators attached.Various types of fuse-cutting machines and crimping devices are available, but only those used by the Broken Hill South Mine Ltd. are described in this paper.The fuse-cutting machine, designed by the engineering staff, is an electrically driven unit fitted with a gear box for the purpose of adjusting the rate at which the fuse is fed to the cutting device, thereby enabling fuses of various lengths to be accurately severed from the main coil of fuse.The machine in question is designed to cut 4, 6, and 8-ft. fuses, but no difficulty should be experienced in designing a machine to cut fuses to any required lengths.

In the course of an integrated airborne survey in 1975, a uranium-molybdenum deposit was discovered by Minatome Australia Pty Limited in North Queensland, Australia, approximately 70 km by road west of Townsville.The mineralization occurs in a welded tuff unit within the Carboniferous St James Vokanics. It is structurally controlled by a complex of subvertical east-west fractures and is exposed over a strike length of 350 m. Drilling has traced a further 150 m extension underneath a barren capping consisting of a thick pile of vokano-sediments. The maximum width of the orebody is 150 m, and its vertical thickness is approximately 100 m.The primary ore minerals are coffinite, pitchblende and molybdenite, accompanied by various alteration products (particularly uranium molybdates).The vein-type mineralization is considered epigenetic.A comprehensive program of surface drilling and underground exploration is in progress to establish the uranium and molybdenum reserves.

In this paper, three types of value-adding in the minerals industry are discussed: downstream processing, improving the efficiency of existing processing and increasing the knowledge base and expertise of the staff. It is shown that, while downstream processing seems to offer a good way of improving Australia's trade position, there are a number of impediments to such development, notably, limited access to the appropriate technology and overseas markets. Transport costs can also be a problem. To reverse the situation will require more positive policies by government. In the meantime, something can be done towards adding value by increasing the efficiency of existing processes. Examples are given, showing how it might be possible to make economies in reagent costs in the gold industry, how innovative technology has led to more complete processing of a tailings dump, how research might lead to an increase in the throughput in the production of synthetic rutile and how it is possible to leach selectively from gold/copper ores.

The Tasman Orogenic Zone is regarded as a single metallogenic province (the Tasman Province) with four SUb-provinces corresponding with its major tectonic components: the Lachlan, New England, Hodgkinson.and North Queensland orogenic provinces. Within the Tasman Province there are four main ore-rock associations.These are1. manganese and iron with sedimentary and basic volcanic rocks,2. zinc-lead-copper and copper with intermediate-acid volcanic sequences,3. minor chromium, platinum, and osmiridium with ultramafic complexes, and4. tin, wolfram, gold, and copper with syn- and posttectonic granitic intrusions.Whereas the ores of ultramafic and volcanic associations form geographically-restricted metallogenic districts, the ubiquitous granitic ores may be subdivided into twenty-one districts that cover almost the entireOrogenic Zone. The Tasman Province is notably lacking in uranium ores and Mississippi Valley-type deposits.There is a distinct tendency for ores of each association to be progressively younger to the east and north, thus paralleling the progressive growth and stabilization of the Zone. Similar ore-rock associations are present in repeated phases of mineralization from the Cambrian to the Permian-Triassic, reflecting the essential homogeneity of the Tasman Province, and the similarity of the successive tectonic cycles.

The clay slime generatea in many sand washing operations is usually very difficult to de-water. Treatment of these slimes is often limited by economic considerations and the properties of the solids to a gravity-driven process. The moisture characteristics of kaolinitic slimes from two different sand washing operations were measured.From these curves, equilibrium moisture contents for sedimentation and for drainage were calculated using the methods of soil physics. The validity of these calculations were confirmed by column experiments.The results show that the increased de-watering to be gained by drainage, as compared with sedimentation, is significant. Furthermore, observed rates of outflow indicate that water can be removed considerably morerapidly when drainage is possible.The practical application of these results to the dewatering of clay slimes is discussed.

The Yaojialing zinc-gold polymetallic deposit is a newly discovered, large skarn deposit in the Middle-Lower Yangtze metallogenic belt, East China. It is located in the transitional zone between the Tongling uplift block and the Fanchang faulted basin. It is mainly hosted in the contact zone between early Cretaceous granodiorite porphyry and Carboniferous-Triassic limestone, or occurs in limestone xenoliths within the intrusion. Skarn and stratabound massive sulfide orebodies are the primary ore styles. Sulfide ?34SV-CDT values indicate a magmatic sulfur source, in common with most deposits in the Tongling block. Calcite d13CV-PDB and d18OV-SMOW ratios reveal that marine carbonates were the major source of carbon in late-stage hydrothermal fluids. THE object of the present paper is to give a brief description of the metallurgical process followed by the Grand Junction Co, and the results obtained therefrom. All figures quoted are from the actual working of the plant over a period of six months from January to June, 1910. The short ton of 2000 lb. is used by the company. Its gold is valued at 84s. per oz. fine, silver at 2s. per oz. fine. The ore consists essentially of a gangue of quartz and calcite, with 8 to 10%sulphide-pyrite, sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite, and traces of arsenic and antimony. The colmtry-rock is a highlyaltered dacite. Small stringers of highly-mineralized ore penetrate the footwall of some of the lodes, forming a valuable stockwerk up to 3 ft. in thickness. In stoping, this is mined with the well defined lode, thus bringing into the mill at times a considerable quantity of hard country-rock. The gold exists in an exceedingly fine state of division, consequently rendering it necessary to grind very fine to obtain a satisfactory extraction.

Project management is not a task to be undertaken lightly. Mining projects generally present even more challenges due to ChinaÆs remoteness and complexity. Having experiences in project management in the West is certainly an asset, but China can present the uninitiated with any number of headaches. To undertake a project there can have many problems that are unique to China. For the last 15 years, China has seen an increasing number of foreign capital investment projects in the mining industry. Practices involved in mining project development have experienced/are experiencing an evolution. Since 1996, Sino Gold Mining Ltd has delivered three mines in China, ie Jianchaling Gold Mine, Jinfeng Gold Mine and White Mountain Gold Mine. Through the work, Sino Gold has established a solid knowledge base and a capable and skilful workforce in effectively undertaking mining projects in China. This paper is concerned with the experiences accumulated so far by Sino Gold in project management in China. An overall review is conducted regarding the reform of the mining project development in China. Opportunities and challenges are highlighted within the political, economic and culture context. Brief summaries of the development of the three gold mines are presented.

In general, the metallurgical industry has so far been slower than the chemical industry to adopt ion exchange materials for industrial processes. The atomic energy industry presents a marked exception to this general situation, and the literature shows a rapidly increasing use of ion exchange techniques for the recovery of atomic energy metals on scales ranging from the ultra micro up to that of the largest mining operations. In many cases, the processes used would be equally applicable to more common metals and it is hoped that this review will be of interest to metallurgists outside the specialised atomic energy field. The review is intended to describe developments of ion exchange processes made during the last three years. Earlier studies have been summarised by Kunin and Preuss (1956) and Roland (1957). In order to restrict the number of references discussed, purely analytical procedures have been omitted and only those processes which have been conducted on a reasonably large scale or which, from their nature, areclearly capable of being upscaled, have been considered. The Takasima Coal Mines comprise four islands near the entrance to Nagasaki Harbour, and are owned and worked by the Mitsu Bishi Company.There are several unusual features in the occurrence and working of these coal seams, the steep angle of "dip," the numerous seams of good coal separated by hundreds of feet of sedimentary rocks, the extensive faulting of the strata, and the way in which the coal is won, when so little surface is available for works, and where there is the ever present danger of subsidence of the roof and consequent flooding of the workings by the ocean. The author trusts that short notes on these few points will be of interest to members.The Islands are named respectively Hasima (Extreme Island), Nakanosima (Middle Island), Takasima (High Island), and Yokosima, and are situated about one mile from the main land.

THE ore treated is almost pure copper pyrites (chalcopyrite) in a gangue of quartz and quartz-felsite. Very little free iron sulphide (pyrite) occurs, and at the time of the erection of the flotation plant the stopes in the oxidized zone had been almostentirely depleted. This zone only extends to a shallow depth, and, below the l00-ft. level, the sulphide for the most part is clean and bright but in the crushed and brecciated parts of the ore channel, where surface water has circulated freely, the gangue is decomposed and kaolinized, and the copper sulphide badly tarnished. This class of ore gave considerable trouble at the mill, but unfortunately, was very limited in quantity. A sample of rich ore assayed-Copper, 21.2 %; iron, 24:.3 %; silica, 28.9 %; sulphur, 25.1%.The concentration in the original mill was effected by handpicking, jigging, and tabling. A considerable portion of the copper mineral arrives at the surface in the form of large lumps of very pure quality, eminently suitable for sorting out by hand.The rich ore is tipped over a grizzly at the shaft bins; the oversize hand-picked, and the undersize bagged direct.

The epizonal Ag-Pb-Zn vein deposit at San Bartolome is characterised by a base-metal sulphide assemblage containing the spectacular development of interpenetrating, bladed networks of pyrrhotite which have been replaced by marcasite and pyrite. A similar assemblage displaying the same crystal habits and textures are also a diagnostic feature of the Sn and SnAg deposits ofBolivia. On this basis, it is reasonable to conclude that both deposits were formed from fluids of similar nature and origin. Although no economic accumulation of Sn is known in San Bartolome, further comparison of the geologic setting, age, mineralogy, fluid inclusion data and magmatic association of this deposit with the Bolivian systems has highlighted additional similarities consistent with a hypothesis that more extensive Sn mineralisation might exist in the San Bartolome area.

Calcination of samples from the Savage River region of Thsmania containing varying magnesite/dolomite ratios under conditions optimized for the magnesite component, followed by carbonic acid leaching at elevated pressures, leads to leachates of varying composition. For a 3 per cent solids slurry leached at 15.5°C and 700 k Pa carbon dioxide, the leachates have magnesium concentrations in the range 0.71 - 13.2 g/litre. The corresponding magnesium extraction data are 12.5 - 86.4 per cent. The variation in leachate composition would be unacceptable in terms of continuous processing, so that a feed of "constant" composition is essential. Selective mining and physical beneficiation to remove the bulk of the dolomite do not appear to be practical. It is concluded that the most appropriate method of feed preparation is to carry out extensive blending of the magnesite/dolomite ore and the resultant calcine.

An evaluation of a pilot scale Delkor horizontal belt filter at Bellambi's South Bulli Colliery showed high productivities and low moisture contents for a range of feed slurries. When treating flotation concentrate, a productivity in excess of 1000 kg/m2/hr (dry) at a moisture content of less than 22 per cent was obtained. The results indicated the belt filter had a capacity twice that of conventional drum or disc filters, and was capable of dewatering a very fine, thickened, classifying cyclone overflow slurry to an acceptable moisture content. The superior performance of this filter is discussed in terms of the factors influencing cake formation and the stratification of solids in the filter bowl of a conventional rotary vacuum drum filter.
