When the first rush of miners took place on the Molyneux River, in the Dunstan Gorge, the gold was won by means of cradling the gravel, which was shovelled from the various beaches and crevices in the rock-bound sides of the river.The above method of winning the gold was only practicable when the beaches were not covered with water, hence the work was usually carried on during the winter months, the ordinary level of the river during spring and summer months being some ten or twelve feet above winter level. The melting of the spow in the Lakes water-shed being responsible for the high summer level of the river.As the available beaches were worked out, other methods of winning the gold were proposed and worked with more or less successful results the first advance being to work the bed of the river by means of a spoon dredge. The spoon was made with a round lip or ring of iron, having a steel cutting edge on one half of the circumference, at the opposite side a socket being forged to take a long spar or boom, which was securely fitted thereto. At intervals round the hoop, half-inch holes were bored to enable. a bullock-hide bag to be laced on to same. The spoon was worked from a pontoon which carried a crab winch, tackles and the necessary washing appliances to treat the washdirt lifted. The cost and availability of iron ore and natural gas, government support, and proximity to the growing Southeast Asian market all contribute to the competitive position of the area. Owing to the lead-time required, this is an ideal time to develop a new project to supply semi-finished steel to Asia for rolling to a finished product. A project contracted now will start up in about three years, when the market should have recovered.

Iron ore beneficiation plants are facing economic pressures to treat more challenging ore types, improve efficiency and improve product quality. Better control and stability of the plant process in the face of increasing feed ore variability has been a goal for many of the operations facing these challenges.Prompt gamma neutron activation analysis (PGNAA) technology has proven to be a successful measurement technique within an iron ore beneficiation plant. PGNAA was first developed in the early 1980s for the measurement of the elemental composition of bulk materials. Today, PGNAA technology is applied for elemental analysis within the iron ore industry on both bulk materials and slurries.Traditional composite sampling throughout the wet iron ore beneficiation process provides a delayed measurement of average properties but does not capture the true variability of the process in real-time. As such this is a limiting factor towards stabilisation and optimisation of the process. A PGNAA analyser provides real-time slurry elemental analysis of feed, concentrate and tails streams within the processing plant. The analytical data from the analyser can be exploited with a control strategy to correct and stabilise the plant on a much shorter time scale, delivering significant economic benefits and greater operational flexibility. The economic benefits include more stable product quality and a reduction in composite sampling and laboratory costs.Some example results will be presented from the Vale Vargem Grande iron ore beneficiation plants, which are utilising a six stream multiplexed Thermo Scientific PGNAA Slurry Analyser.CITATION:Noble, G, Stabile, A, Portes, E and Roberto, J, 2017. Alluvial platinum was recovered during gold mining operations in Maud Creek, a tributary of the Howard River. Average electron probe analyses give Pt 88.75, Fe 5.27, Ir 0.70, Os 1.06, Pd 0.34, Ru 0.14, Rh 1.29, Cu 1.06. Rare grains of a Pt-Fe-Cu alloy are also present and an unusual feature of all grains is the relatively high rhodium content which finds expression in segregations of rhodium arsenide, cherepanovite. Platinum is found in the Orepuki area of Southland, where it is probably partly derived from the mafic rocks of the Longwood Complex. Rocks of the Rotoroa Complex, similar to those of the Longwood Complex, form bedrock in Maud Creek and are possibly the source of the Howard platinum. Alternatively, it might be derived by glacial transport from the Matakitaki ultramafic block 30 km to the southwest. Origin from the Rotoroa rocks is preferred as, if the Matakitaki rocks are part of the Dun Mountain Ophiolites, they might be expected to contain osmiridium rather than platinum. The ratio Pt:Ir-Os has been widely used to distinguish low Pt:Ir-Os ophiolitic from high Pt:Ir-Os gabbroic assemblages. Mafic complexes such as Longwoods, Darran, Rotoroa, and Riwaka might be expected to show similar high Pt:Ir-Os ratios and be targets for platinum exploration. Detrital platinum examined from the Parapara area, Golden Bay is mainly osmiridium, with rare grains of rutheniridosmine, very similar in composition to that found in concentrates from the Kaniere dredge, West Coast.

SLon vertical ring and pulsating high gradient magnetic separators (VPHGMS) possess the advantages of high efficiency and high reliability in beneficiating weakly magnetic minerals. In recent years, models SLon-2250, SLon-2500, SLon-3000 and SLon-4000 have been developed. Under the Town and Country Planning Act 1977 the Ministry of Works and Development has a responsibility for providing information to local and regional planning authorities on public works and matters of national development and importance, for the exercise of their responsibilities under this Act. One such matter which has recently become a source of concern is the development of South Island lignite. In 1979 the Ministry of' Energy produced a position statement outlining a programme of' research leading to the possible extraction of lignite in Southland or Central Otago for conversion into about 50 per cent of New Zealand's liquid fuel requirements by 1995. Understandably this possibility has caused considerable concern at the local level, expressed particularly by bodies such as Federated Farmers and the local authorities. In the absence of any factual knowledge short of mere conjecture been able to recommend to local authorities is that they limit their planning period to ten years. After this time more information regarding the size, nature, location and certainty of the proposal will permit a more accurate assessment of the implications of the York. While on holiday earlier this year I took the opportunity to visit opencast mining areas in Germany and England to gain an appreciation of the scale of impacts involved and discuss with those concerned the procedures used in planning for such operations. What follows is a brief description of these operations, a comparison with the likely development in this country and the extraction of what may be some relevant principles of' operation for the planning of an environmentally acceptable project. The object of this paper is to give a description of the new office and changehouse building and equipment at the Zinc Corporation Limited, the office section of which has now been in full use for approximately three years, and the changehouse section for approximately two years. As the expectations of the design have been fully realized, it is thought that this description will be of interest to members and possibly of some use to others faced with similar problems.GENERALIn the centralization of the surface plant around the new main shaft the combined office and changehouse building forms a prominent feature, being located between the shaft and the mill and facing the workshops on the northern side.The scheme for housing all employees in one building was proposed by the Manager, Mr. A. J. Keast, who was familiar with a similar successful structure built at the McIntyre Porcupine Mines Ltd. in Ontario, Canada.The principal features of this building were adopted as a basis for design, and the present layout evolved to suit the particular requirements of this mine.Some of the advantages of the design are:(a) Economy in first cost and space occupied when compared with plants having separate office and changehouse buildings.(b) Easier and more constant supervision of employees and of the plant by the senior staff members.(c) Close contact between officials of all departments.(d) Close covered connection between changehouse and shaft.(e) Avoidance of duplication of ,essential services such as electric power, water, heating plant, sewerage, etc.The Managing Director, Mr. W. S. Robinson, further instructed that the following requirements be adhered to in the new building:(a) Ample accommodation to be provided for office staff and other employees.(b) Special attention to be paid to lighting, both natural and artificial.(c) Working temperatures to be controlled to facilitate comfort and efficiency.(d) The buildings and equipment' to be of a permanent nature with furnishings and fittings of modern design.

The main factors which influence disposal of mine waste under New Zealand conditions are identified and discussed: namely, geological conditions which produce soft weather-sensitive waste, wet and cold winters which affect productivity in such waste, elevated seismicity which affects stability and the need for water rights which involve public participation. The waste disposal scheme for the Martha Hill Project is described, thereby illustrating how these factors influence the planning of a current mine strippings and tailings disposal scheme.

An application to mine an ilmenite-rich sand deposit in Westland led to public concern about potential radioactive hazards should the ore be further processed to recover zircon or monazite. A review recommended that any material involved in the heavy mineral sand industry containing more than 0.05% thorium, uranium or their mixture should be considered a radioactive substance and, for mining purposes, a notifiable product. Safeguards for those occupationally exposed would operate via the Radiation Protection Regulations. The major safety requirement would be the minimisation of dust in certain operations.

The Canada Centre for Remote Sensing (CCRS) has developed an airborne sensor, the SWIR Full Spectrum Imager (SFSI) which detects in the short wave infrared range of the solar spectrum from 1220 to 2420 nm. In June of 1995, a demonstration flight was undertaken in the state of Nevada with the support of the companies listed above. The focus of the flight was to collect image data over well known mineral deposits with the objective of evaluating the applicability of this sensor to alteration mineral mapping. Some of the Nevada sites chosen include Cuprite and Goldfield, volcanic hosted acid sulfate systems; Yerington, a structurally complex porphyry copper deposit; and Virginia City, a quartz-sericite-pyrite vein system with advanced argillic pods. Ground spectral data was collected with the PIMA-II spectrometer. Solar reflectance calibration was done by Desert Research Institute personnel at Virginia City and Cuprite. This paper will discuss the configuration of the sensor and present image and ground data for Goldfield and Virginia City.

Centennial Coal operates the Springvale and Angus Place longwall mining operations that extract coal beneath the Newnes Plateau in the Western Coalfields of New South Wales. Springvale and Angus Place mines have a history of difficult geotechnical conditions, where mining operations are conducted with a thick coal roof interbedded with numerous claystone units and relatively high levels of vertical and horizontal stress. The combination of a relatively high stress regime and weak laminated roof has led to numerous roof failures throughout the mine’s life.Following underground roadway development, the mine roadways can experience high levels of roof movement that can lead to roof falls. Two-point wire extensometers (known as ‘telltales’) are extensively used for roadway condition monitoring. Along with extensive other geological and geotechnical data, monitoring data is used to prepare geotechnical hazard plans that are then used in all areas of mine planning to allow for safe and efficient operation of the mine.This paper presents a case study of the use of a new software tool that allows time-scaled visualisation of monitoring data in the context of longwall and development face positions and installed strata support. It can be used in the identification of geotechnical risk factors and their interaction with the mining process to allow a more robust geotechnical hazard process. This study explores two evolving 3D surveying technologies, photogrammetry and laser scanning, and applies them to deformation monitoring of rock faces and mine highwalls. A quantitative analysis focused on 3D coordinate determination is performed. Furthermore, a qualitative assessment directed at the practicality and viability of each system operating near a rock face or in a mining operation is undertaken to reveal one systemÆs deficiencies over the other. Two photogrammetric and four laser scanning surveys aimed at optimising accuracy and precision within a short period of data acquisition are conducted on the rock face at Organ Pipes National Park, Keilor, Victoria. The accuracy and repeatability of each survey is determined using a combination of iWitness photogrammetric, and Cyclone laser scanning software. The 3D coordinates of targets placed on the rock face are determined by triangulation and resection principles within a bundle adjustment. The coordinates determined by each system are then compared in a 3D transformation. Controlled deformation conditions are established to determine the precision to which each system can detect movement in the rock face. An object of known dimensions is placed on the rock face to simulate deformation. The relative orientation of images taken for the pre- and post-deformation photogrammetric surveys provide an overall 3D point accuracy of 1.255 mm and 1.804 mm respectively. A 3D transformation shows discrepancies of less than ¦22 mm (RMS) between the geometry of the photogrammetric and laser scanning models. Both systems are able to detect the simulated deformation to a precision of 50 mm. This work also identifies how to obtain millimetre accuracy for 3D coordinate determination of rock faces, thereby providing a quality data set for surveyors, geotechnical engineers and mine geologists. Photogrammetry is shown to be a mobile, time and cost-effective technique that is more amenable to mining operations than terrestrial laser scanning. However, both systems demonstrate that they are capable of detecting movements that may lead to failures in the rock face, and possibly endangering human life. The implications are significant for surveyors, geotechnical engineers and mine geologists working in mining operations where enhanced safety conditions, increased productivity and lower operational costs are important considerations.

With the goal of reducing injuries and fatalities related to haul truck accidents, this research investigates technologies and intervention strategies for improving worker training using a virtual environment (VE). Funded by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), this research specifically focuses on training workers in preshift inspections of haul trucks to avoid preventable defects from causing worker injuries and expensive equipment damage. Improved training in these inspections is expected to increase uptime. The VE developed to train workers for preshift inspections consists of three phases: the virtual tour, the virtual inspection and the shift simulation. The virtual tour introduces information necessary to conduct a preshift inspection by guiding the worker around a haul truck, identifying parts to be inspected and explaining defects to look for. The virtual inspection assesses retention as the worker navigates around a haul truck and identifies defects. During the shift simulation, the worker is shown a simulation of the work shift, which animates severe consequences of any overlooked defects to emphasise the importance of preshift inspections. To provide multiple training platforms, desktop and CAVEÖ versions of the training VE were created. Flux Studio was used to model the environment and to produce Virtual Reality Modelling Language (VRML) files for the desktop version. DIVERSE, an application programming interface, was then used to implement a more realistic version of the VE in a CAVEÖ, a room-sized visualisation system. Initial feedback from mining colleagues indicates that the training VE may replace normal classroom training for preshift inspections in the future. As opposed to PowerPoint presentations and instructional videos, the training VE provides better spatial understanding of the location of parts and incorporates interactive features to actively engage drivers in the learning process, which may result in better retention. Initial feedback also indicates that minor improvements can be made to the virtual tour and virtual inspection phases.

Bulk cargoes, including iron ore fines, must be shipped according to the rules agreed by the member states of the International Maritime Organization (IMO). One critical safety measure is the transportable moisture limit (T?ML) required for Group A cargoes (cargoes that may liquefy). A number of shipping incidents involving iron ore fines from India, where liquefaction of the cargo was suspected to be the cause, have brought the issue of iron ore fines T?ML into the spotlight. Extensive research has been undertaken by the major iron ore producers from Australia and Brazil to support the IMO in developing regulations for the shipment of iron ore fines. To this end, iron ore companies sponsored the AMIRA P1097 project to establish a modified T?ML test approach specific to iron ore fines. The project was undertaken by TUNRA Bulk Solids, CSIRO’s Centre for Bulk Solids and Particulate Technology and the University of Auckland, with project leadership provided by Creative Process Innovation. The Raub Gold Mines are situated approximately in the centre of the Malayan Peninsula in the State of Penang. Part of the area, now known as "Raubhole," was opencut some 800 years ago by the Mon Khmers, a Cambodian people, whose vestiges mark numerous outcrops in South Eastern Asia. With their decline and extinction the work was abondoned, leaving a large pond in a dense thicket of Beluka (secondary growth).From the year 1885 onwards the history of Raubhole and the water therein records a chain sale starting from an enterprising local "Rajah," who had "assumed" authority, to an equally wakeful Singapore Arab; thence through the agency of a "down-and-out" beachcomber to a hopeful Australian company in the "goldbrick" days. Subsequent catastrophe on a depleted stringer was followed by reconstruction; the deserved reward of a long mining life, and an output of nearly 800,000 ounces of gold. Owing to the loss of notes and data stored in Singapore, this paper is not as complete as it should be, especially in respect to its metallurgical phases. Apologies are therefore tendered in advance for any deficiencies which may be noted.The necessary regional geological data have been taken largely from the admirable investigation of the Raub area by J. A. Richardson, A.R.C.S., B.Sc., F.G.S., of the Malayan Geological Survey*, and, throughout the paper, months represent lunar periods of 28 days and money is expressed in sterling.MINING SECTIONSAs shown hereunder the reef system has been divided by nature into seven isolated sections, which have been of necessity worked as seven separate small mines. From north to south these are:-(a) Sungei Agas consisting of very shallow workings to the south of, and adjacent to, a granite-porphyry mass known as Bukit (hill) Kajang. Effects of DA as a Grinding Aid on Selective Grinding of Low-Grade Bauxite Effects of DA (a copolymer of acrylic acid and acrylamide) as a grinding aid on selective grinding of low-grade bauxite were investigated in this study. The addition of DA into the grinding system enhanced the selectivity of grinding and increased the A/S ratio in the coarse fraction of ground product, leading to improved throughput of grinding mills and alumina recovery. The results showed that DA decreased the viscosity of slurry significantly and hence improved grinding efficiency due to low viscosity at a high slurry concentration. Both the hydrogen bond formation and chemical adsorption existed between DA and the surface of bauxite particles. The adsorption of DA on the surface of bauxite could decrease stress needed for crack initiation and extending during grinding, prevent new-born crack surfaces from rejoining, and promote the expansion of the cracks.

The discussion in this paper centres on examples of mining that are drawn mainly from the coal mining industry. The intention is to review the opportunities that exist for incorporating environmental planning into mining industry practice in New Zealand. The coal mining examples serve to make some general points which have some application for many types of mining.

Safe, efficient production is a common objective for all large open pit mines. Despite comprehensive policies, procedures and regulations aimed at protecting workers, several people die each year in mining equipment-related collisions. The limited sightlines of heavy equipment operators coupled with difficult operating conditions are major contributing factors to the majority of mining equipment collisions. Off road haul trucks are the most common type of machinery involved in surface accidents. These vehicles represent the primary target for improving safety performance by mine operators. Although several commercial products have been introduced to address these issues, none have achieved significant market acceptance. The current collision avoidance solutions lack integration with onboard fleet management and equipment health systems. To achieve acceptance in industry, any collision avoidance system must offer high reliability, minimal false alarms, and value for money. With these criteria in mind, this paper will examine the pros and cons of the various technological approaches to collision avoidance in an open pit mining environment. The unique global positioning systems (GPS) and camera-based proximity detection solution on offer from Modular Mining Systems will be described. This solution uses intelligent filters to minimise false alarms. Tight integration with fleet management provides context information to enhance warnings and enable back-office near-miss analysis. Available today, this combination creates a practical solution to improve the situational awareness of heavy equipment operators, at a compelling price point. Future directions for maximising heavy equipment operator situational awareness will also be examined.

At Appin colliery, geological structural analyses and investigations of roof conditions suggest roof failure may be attributed to vectorial stresses acting on underground openings, and inducing movement along inherent discontinuities in the surrounding rocks. Certain complex joint and fracture patterns tend to exhibit the effect of this movement resulting often in local deterioration in natural support.The following conclusions are drawn.1. Roof failure is related to the inherent nature of the roof rocks, the presence of mechanical discontinuities, and the vectorial stresses imposed upon it.2. Roof failure is not necessarily related to the statistically most prominent jointing.3. Colliery development approximately parallel to the direction of the statistically most prominent jointing sometimes results in favourable roof conditions.4. The maximum principal stress is the resultant of those vectorial stresses acting upon a mine opening and may be inferred from roof adjustments to those stresses after mining.5. Statistical analyses of jointing in the mine workings can provide clues to the tectonic force or forces which have been regionally or locally influential.6. There is a probable relationship between mining induced fracturing, jointing, and micro-fractures in quartz grains, within the sediments of the mine roof.
