Considerable interest has been shown lately in various types of furnaces for the production of high temperatures, both for laboratory purposes and for small industrial uses. Dr. J. A. Harkerl described certain modifications of the Arsem graphite resistance helix for high-temperature work at the National Physical Laboratory. Dr. Northrup also has developed two interesting forms of high-temperature furnaces. In 1911, Messrs. Winne and Dantsizen2 described two forms of resistance furnaces using ductile molybdenum or tungsten as resistors. Since the discovery, by this laboratory, of methods for producing these metals in ductile form, their use as resistance elements in the research laboratory of the General Electric Co. has grown to such an extent that they are now almost indispensable. These furnaces are used here for alloy research, annealing, heat-treating, and practically all of the thermal processes requiring temperatures above 900' C. Various types of furnaces have been developed to meet the general needs of laboratory work, and it is the purpose of this paper briefly to describe some of these furnaces. A tubular furnace wound with a metallic resistor is the simplest type to construct, and almost every laboratory has made such furnaces. The only essential difference between a furnace wound with platinum o base metal and one wound with tungsten or molybdenum is that the coils of the latter must be heated in a neutral or reducing atmosphere It has long been our custom here to build our resistance furnaces with : metallic casing from which the tube could be easily removed for rewind ing. The heat-insulating material—usually calcined magnesia, alumina silica, or silex, depending upon the nature of the resistor-—is used i: powdered form so that it can be readily removed and replaced. The Sub-committee on Safety of the Industrial Organization Com-mittee of the Institute has been asked to cooperate with the National Safety Council, and has made certain recommendations to the Board of Directors of the Institute regarding ways and means of bringing about this cooperation. The National Safety Council has been in existence seven years. Its inception was at a meeting of the American Iron and Steel Electrical Engineers held in Milwaukee in 1912. The first annual congress was held in New York City in October, 1913, at which time the Council was definitely organized. Its membership now consists of nearly four thousand members, representing industrial plants, railroads, public utility companies, insurance companies, state labor commissions, Chambers of Commerce, manufacturers' organizations, etc. These members are in all states of the Union and in eleven foreign countries, and through them the National Safety Council reaches more than six million workers.

Inasmuch as there has been a great deal of activity in this district recently, a paper of this kind should treat of all the various phases of mining, namely, prospecting, developing, and operating. Prospecting .. Where ore is found at a depth of 100 ft. (30 m.) or more, the prospect work is done by churn drilling. Several makes of churn drills are used in this work, both steam- and gasoline-driven machines being used. The drilling is usually started with a 6-in. bit, and the size of the bit is reduced, if necessary, as the hole is advanced. It is general practice to drill from 100- to 400-ft. holes, but this is governed entirely by the location and formation of the ground. In drilling sheet ground, close spacing of drill holes is unnecessary, but in narrow orebodies, the holes are spaced from 15 to 50 ft. (4.6 to 15 m.) apart. Ten years ago, very few assays were kept of the drilling, but during recent years records have been kept very accurately, showing the location, elevation, assays, and also the vertical section of the hole. After the orebody is reached, cuttings are taken every 2 or 3 ft. (0.6 to 0.9 m.) samples being sometimes taken by pouring the water off the cuttings and taking a portion of the coarse material for assay. It has been found, however, that very often the sludge material poured off with the water contains high mineral values. To overcome this, cuttings from each 2 or 3 ft. are put in a container, and, after the water is evaporated, sample for assay is taken by means of Jones samplers. Permanent records of cuttings showing various formations are kept in glass jars or glued on large cards. Drilling at present is costing from $1.25 to $1.50 per foot. In pre-war times, the drilling costs ran from 75c. to $1 per foot. Development After proving property by drilling, shafts are put down to the ore-body. Production of crude oil for 1940 in southwestern Pennsylvania was off nearly 70,000 bbl., largely as a result of the great number oi abandonments, together with the lack of extension of the Washington and Green County pools. Oil wells completed numbered 51, which is 26 more than last year, but the total initial production of 259 bbl. is only 18 bbl. greater than in 1939. There was an increase of 72 over last year for a total of 209f gas wells. However, 68 7 dry holes were drilled, which is 40 more than a year ago. Thus, 328f wells were drilled during the year, and rigs are erected or drilling is progressing on 59 t more. Shallow Development Oil.—Butler County led in number of oil wells completed, with a total of 27 for an initial production of only 69 bbl. Washington County, with 12 new oil wells, one of which made 40 bbl. from the Fifth sand in S. Franklin township, has 95 bbl., while in Allegheny County 9 wells gave an initial of 86 bbl. for the highest Per well average in the area. This initial was given a considerable boost by one 35-bbl and another 2;-bbl. well in West Deer township, where the Fourth sand produced at 1840 feet. Greene County had only one oil well completed during 1940, and Washington County had 12. The subnormal totals for these counties may be explained by the higher cost of completions and the declining price of crude. The first price change in crude during the year occurred on May 22, when a 25 cut was made. A second 25 cut was made July 12, and was followed by a 156 cut on .Aug. 28. This price held until Nov. 12, when there was a restoration of 156. On Dec. 17 a second 156 increase was put into effect, bringing the price to $I.So per barrel. Gas The large increase in the number of gas wells completed may be attributed to three factors; namely, the recently discovered production possibilities of moderately deep, hitherto little tested horizons, together with increased demand and price. The latter has been made possible by a recent decision of the court, which ruled restraining the public service Commision's prohibition of a raise in the minimum monthly charge to small consumers by one of the major gas companies. A portion of the revenue derived in this manner is being passed along to the producer in the form of higher prices in the field. This higher field rate will remain in effect until a new ruling is made, when it will be reduced in proportion to the reduction of the monthly minimum charge. In an effort to extend the chambers Dam Fifth sand oil pool southwest from Amwell township, Washington County, several wells have been drilled. One of these, in Morris township, washington County, had an initial of 3.2 million cu. ft. open flow from the Big Injun sand. This indicates an entirely new productive area for the latter horizon. Allegheny County had one spectacular well in South Fayette township-—at a depth of about 2500 ft. a 4-million-CU. ft.

By means of electrokinetic measurements, the surface properties of the aluminosilicate polymorphs (sillimanite, andalusite, and kyanite) and also mullite have been found to depend on the ratio of A10 bonds to SiO bonds in the surface. The Al-toSi ratio in the surface is dependent upon the crystal lographic properties of the mineral, which in turn determine coordination numbers of A1 and of Si, cleavage characteristics, and density of the various solids. Mullite with a greater bulk Al-toSi ratio has the highest zpc of the aluminosilicates. By treatment in dilute acids or by cycling between acidic and basic solutions, alumina is selectively dissolved from the surface of these orthosilicates. This shifts the apparent zpc to lower pH values as the fraction of SiO groups in the surface increases. Thus, surface properties can be altered by procedures that alter the A l-to-Si ratio in the surface. Flotation of these aluminosilicates results from electrostatic interaction of the collector ions with the mineral surfaces. As a result, flotation response shifts in accord with any shift in apparent zpc by pretreatment. Separation of minerals by flotation is based on differences in the physicochemical properties of their surfaces.'-3 For many minerals, adsorption of flotation collectors results from their functioning as counter ions in the electrical double layer at solid-water interface. In such systems, separation depends on differences in the zero point of charge (zpc) of the various minerals. The zpc is defined as the concentration of potential determining ions in solution at which the surface is uncharged. The potential determining ions for inorganic oxide-water interfaces are hydrogen and hydroxyl.4,5 This work is concerned with the effects of crystal structure, composition, and surface preparation on the surface properties and flotation behavior of aluminosilicates. Differences resulting from crystal structure were studied by measuring electrokinetic potentials and determining the flotation behavior of three different aluminosilicate materials having the same chemical composition (Al2O3 SiO2), namely andalusite, kyanite, and sillimanite. Furthermore, the effect of the Al2O3-to-SiO2 ratio on flotation behavior and surface properties was investigated by including synthetic mullite, 3A12O3 .2SiO2. Gaudin and co-workers 6,7 have clearly shown how crystal structure determines the native floatability of certain minerals. Those solids in which the surface is comprised mainly of broken residual bonds possess naturally hydrophobic surfaces. It was found by Bakakin8 that for a number of oxidized lead minerals, differences in floatability were due to the distance of Pb atom from the surface. Only limited work has been done on relating electrical properties of surfaces to crystal structure and composition. Healy et. a1.9 found that the zero points of charge of various manganese dioxides ranged from about pH 1.5 to pH 7.5, and these differences in the zpc's were interpreted in terms of the atomic packing in the various crystals. The research presented here clearly shows that crystal structure and chemical composition do affect the surface properties of aluminosilicates and, in addition, that these effects can be altered by changing conditions under which the surfaces are prepared. CRYSTAL STRUCTURE OF THE ALUMINOSILICATES Sillimanite, andalusite, and kyanite are composed of regionally metamorphosed rocks differing mainly in degree of metamorphism. All three minerals have the same chemical composition, Al2O3 - SiO2, of which sillimanite is the high temperature polymorph and kyanite and andalusite the lower temperature polymorphs. Andalusite and sillimanite crystallize in the orthorhombic system while kyanite crystallizes in the triclinic system. The structure of these three minerals is essentially chains of aluminum-oxygen octahedra linked laterally by silicon and aluminum. The arrangement of these chains in the three minerals is shown in Fig. 1.l4

The growing popularity in the United States of the vertical-flue even was emphasized when in 1905 the United States Steel Corp. chose the Koppers oven as the type which best suited their requirements. Heinrich Koppers was born on November 23. 1872. at a small farm in Walbeck near Geldern on the lower Rhine. When young Koppers was eight years old, however the family moved away from the farm to the industrial city of Bochum in the Ruhr. Here Koppers attended public school and subsequently served an apprenticeship to a tinsmith before taking a job as a lathe operator with a local steel company. He had ambitions to be much more than a machinist, however, and used his week-ends and evenings to improve his theoretical background by taking courses at a vocational-training school in Bochum. After winning the highest honor the school could bestow (the silver Staats-medaille), Koppers went on to continue his education at the Rheinisch-Westfalische Hüttenschule in Duisberg. One of his teachers there, Fritz Wüst who later became a professor at the Technische Hochschule at Aachen, recognizing Koppers' unusual abilities, predicted for him a great future. In 1894 Heinrich Koppers joined the firm of Dr. C. Otto and Co. in Dahlhausen, and in 1899 while superintendent of the Mathias Stinnes mine he built his first battery of ovens for Hugo Stinnes, the German industrialist. Two years later he started his own organization, and in 1902 he made Essen his headquarters. It was to Essen that a group of engineers from the United States Steel Corp. went in 1906 with an invitation to Koppers to design and supervise the construction of four batteries of ovens at the Joliet works of the Illinois Steel Co. Each battery was to consist of 70 ovens. Arriving in the United States in 1907, Koppers established a branch of his firm in Joliet, and construction began. The first battery was fired on July 27, 1908. Rugged and simple, these ovens incorporated basic design features which were to make the Koppers oven and its future modifications the choice of a very large segment of the by-product coking industry of America. The 280 ovens at Joliet were 35 ft long, 8 ¾ ft in height, and tapered from 21 to 17 in. The total daily capacity of the four batteries was 2240 tons of coke. The ovens were of the new cross-regenerative type; that is, instead of longitudinal regenerators serving an entire battery, as in the older Koppers ovens, cross regenerators for each separate oven were employed. Fuel gas was supplied from the side of the battery through ducts in the brickwork known as gun flues, which reached to the center of the battery under the vertical heating-flues. Removable, ceramic gas-nozzles fitted at the top of each gun flue helped to insure good control over the distribution of the fuel gas, and uniform heating conditions were also promoted by regulating the air supply to, and the suction in, each heating flue. A different refractory w& used for each battery. One was built of American silica brick, one of American quartzite, and two of imported German quartzite. The installation at Joliet proved to be very successful, and in 1911, 490 additional' Koppers ovens were built for the Illinois Steel Co. at the great new steelworks at Gary, Ind. By 1912 the H. Koppers Co. had established its headquarters in Chicago and was rapidly extending its business to include construction for such iron and steel companies as the Woodward Iron Co. at Woodward, Ma. (80 ovens in 1912); the Tennessee Coal, Iron and Rail- road Co. at Fairfield, Ala. (280 ovens in 1912); the Inland Steel Co. at Indiana Harbor, Ind. (86 ovens during 1913 and 1914) ; and the Republic Iron and Steel Co. at Youngstown, Ohio (68 ovens in 1913). In 1914 a group of men in Pittsburgh bought a major shareholding in the H. Koppers Co., and moved the headquarters of the organization from Chicago to their own city. Under its new management the company was highly successful in obtaining a large share of the contracts for by-product installations built during World War I. THE Bingham area in the West Mountain mining district on the eastern slope of the Oquirrh range, some 28 miles southwest of Salt Lake City, has been the most consistent producer for the United States Smelting Refining and Mining Company, production having been continuous, except for minor interruptions, since the organization of the United States Mining Co. in 1899. This production has come from fissures and mantos largely within limestone members aggregating something less than 10 per cent of a thick quartzite sequence of Pennsylvanian age which has been warped into an open syncline plunging northwesterly. Bedding on the easterly limb dips 10°-45° but steep-ens to 90° and even overturns on the westerly limb. Ore bodies cluster about the more northerly of two elongate interconnecting stocks of monzonite which have risen in an axial position within this syncline. Largely within the more northerly of these stocks is the low-grade copper ore body exploited in the Utah Copper open cut of the Kennecott Copper Corp. The values, in seams, minute fracture fillings, and disseminations of pyrite and silica, pervade not only the stock but adjacent sediments, and form a nebulous, sprawling mass which both mineralogically and geographically is the center of the district. The more southerly of the twin stocks appears to be comparatively inert and without obvious relation to mineralization. which

A steam drive of heavy oil was field tested in a shallow, low oil-saturation formation near Deerfield, Mo. The pilot was conducted in the Warner formation, a sandstone containing an 18' API oil having 1,000-cp viscosity at the 60F origind reservoir temperature. The formation war at a depth of 160 ft. Steam was injected into nine input wells arranged in an array of inverted five-spot patterns. In the completely confined center pattern, 14 temperature observation wells were installed to obtain thermal data and observe test progress. Late in the test, slugs of ammonia were injected to trace the flow paths of injected fluids. From the test area about 7,000 bbl of oil were produced. Data were obtained on areal and vertical temperature distribution, steam front advance, reservoir fluid movement and terminal saturations. This field test of a steam drive (I) demonstrated the feasibility of the method, (2) confirmed that the low residual oil saturations observed in the laboratory are obtained in the steam-swept region in the field and (3) provided recovery and conformance data for one set of field conditions. INTRODUCTION The Deerfield steam drive pilot test was conducted in a shallow sandstone containing 1,000-cp oil. The venture was undertaken cooperatively by the research and production departments of Carter Oil Co., which organizations have since been consolidated into Esso Production Research Co. and Humble Oil & Refining Co.. respectively. The production department was interested in steam injection at Deerfield because it appeared to be the most promising method of commercially producing this heavy oil deposit. The research department was interested in applying the new recovery method and in evaluating its performance in the field. At the time the test was begun, the initial oil saturation was not well known. Subsequent air coring and early pilot results confirmed that there was too little oil in place for profitable commercial exploitation by steam. Pilot termination at that time, however, would have been premature for evaluating field performance of the process, and the tert was continued to obtain additional data on steam injection as a recovery method. The test was located in Vernon County, Mo., about 10 miles north of the town of Deerfield and only a few miles from the Kansas border. The pilot site was selected as typical of the area. The location represented neither the highest nor the lowest oil saturation region in the acreage under lease in 1954. The steam drive was conducted in the Warner sandstone of Lower Pennsylvanian age. At the test site the top of the Warner occurs at about 160 ft subsurface and the formation is a fine- to medium-grained micaceous sandstone that dips gently to the northwest at the rate of 12 to 15 ft/ mile. A cross-section and permeability profile of the test location are shown in Fig. 1. At the pilot location the average total thickness of the Warner formation is about 43 ft, but the effective thickness for steam drive is 26 ft. Two distinct types of hydrocarbon saturation are apparent. The lower portion of the total sand, averaging about 17 ft thick, contains a very heavy asphaltic material that will not flow under the influence of a steam drive. This bottom interval, referred to as a dead oil residue, was not considered as part of the net sand undergoing steam exploitation. The initial formation and fluid properties of the upper 26 ft in the test area are summarized in Table 1, and variation of oil viscosity with temperature is shown in Fig. 2. Imbibition tests on preserved core samples taken at the end of the pilot test showed that the Warner sandstone was then neutral or slightly water-wet. Initially, the reservoir may have been strongly water-wet as indicated by low relative permeability to water during both water injection testing and early steam injection. PRIOR HISTORY Initial production tests of wells at the pilot site produced water with only a faint show of oil. No gas was produced except at Well 7-W in the pilot area and at another well about 1/3 mile northeast of the pilot. Prior to the start of the steam drive, a two-well water injection test and a two-well air injection test were conducted. No oil was produced by either. Water was pumped into Well I-W in the northeast corner of the pilot area with simultaneous production from Well 1 (Fig. 3). The air-injection tat was run at input Well 9-W and its offset, Well 2, in the southwest corner. Air and water injectivities were about the same when corrected for viscosity and pressure differences.

Between cross currents of economic factors and international expediencies the iron and steel industry in 1948 made an outstanding contribution to the general economic picture. Were it not for an unfortunate episode during the month of April involving a temporary shortage of coal, 1948 would have been an all-time record year in output. Exceeded in no previous peacetime year, the production of iron and steel in 1948 totaled some 88,500,000 tons. That it was a worthwhile effort of no small magnitude is evidenced by the fact that in three and one half years following the war, this nation has produced as much steel as in the five years preceding the war. This figure of 88,500,000 tons is 68 per cent greater than that for 1939.

IN DECEMBER, 1934, the joint Committee on Fuel Values, of the American Institute of Minim and Metallurgical Engineers and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, submitted a preliminary report, which briefly stated its conclusion that it was not possible to devise any formula for the valuation of coal, based upon the various physical and chemical properties, that would be generally applicable. That report also listed those chemical and physical properties of coal that are generally recognized to have some effect on its use in steam plants, and those physical characteristics of steam plants which affect, in one way or another the relative importance of the properties of coal used in them. Since then, the Committee has considered and discussed in greater detail the interrelationship of the properties of coal and plant characteristics. The conclusions of the Committee are summarized below, with certain recommendations regarding engineering procedure, which will promote the collection of more easily correlated observations with respect to this subject, and thus advance more rapidly the accumulation of data capable of general application.

The surface slip line structure has been investigated by optical microscopy during the easy glide deformation of Cu-A1 single crystals as a function of composition, testing temperature and prior thermal treatment. The slip line structure in alloys of 2.5 or less at. pct Al is similar to pure copper, while alloys of 5 or more at. pct Al show slip tracings typical of a brass. Cross slip is observed in the "a-brass type" crystals and the amount of this type of slip increases rapidly with aluminum content. The cross slip tendency in 14 at. pct Al crystals is signicantly higher when tested at 150°C as compared to 4.2" and 77°K. In addition, cross slip is more pronounced in this alloy in the furnace cooled condition than when quenched from 450°C. The cross slip behavior is analyzed in terms of existing models for this type of deformation. In two previous investigations, reports of yield points1 and solid solution strengthening2 in Cu-A1 single crystals have been given. This paper enlarges upon the brief description of the slip line structure discussed in these reports. Since the easy glide slip line pattern of copper changes markedly with the addition of -30 pct Zn (-brass),3 a study of slip lines as a function of solute additions in Cu solid solutions should help to explain some of these differences. In addition to composition variables, slip lines have also been studied as a function of testing temperature and prior thermal treatment. PROCEDURE The slip line observations were made on single crystals of 0.5 to 14 at. pct Al using a light microscope. Details concerning the preparation and basic testing procedure are given elsewhere.' Prior to testing, each crystal was homogenized at 900°C for 24 hrs, furnace cooled, and electrolytically polished in a 60 pct phosphoric acid solution. The strain rate was-5 X 10 sec-I in each case. Unless otherwise stated, all observations reported upon here were made during the early stages of easy glide. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The maximum magnification generally used was 1000X, and slip lines could be resolved down to about 105 cm (1000A). This resolution is appreciably less than obtainable with electron microscopy replica techniques where the replication can resolve slip lines down to about 40 A. Thus, while many qualitative features could be studied, the type of quantitative data obtainable with an electron microscopy replica study could not be made. Crystals containing 0.5 and 2.5 at. pct Al deform much like pure copper exhibiting a high density of fine slip lines that cover the entire gage length of the specimens. Fig. 1 shows the surface slip line pattern in a 2.5 at. pct A1 extended 0.01 shear strain at room temperature. Crystals having 5 to 14 at. pct A1 showed appreciably coarser slip lines that were generally concentrated at one end of the gage length. During easy glide these coarse slip lines propagate along the gage length in a manner similar to that observed in a-brass single crystals by Piercy, Cahn, and cottrel14 and refered to by them as a Lüders band propagation. Fig. 2 shows a typical area of these coarse slips in a 14 at. pct A1 crystal after a room temperature shear strain of 0.01. Two slip systems were apparently active. Using a method described by Cullity, the angles, between the specimen axis and the normals of the primary and secondary slip planes were determined to be 50 and 84 deg, respectively. 'From the Laue photograph, was 52, 81, 66, and 30 deg for the primary, cross, conjugate, and fourth slip planes, respectively. In water flooding peripheral, center-to-edge, line-drive or water-encroachment patterns the question has arisen, "when should a producing well be converted to a water-injection well?". It is realized that, if the producing well is shut in when water breakthrough occurs, some oil could be left in an unswept area. Yet, operation to high water-oil ratios may require processing much additional water. If a well is shut in, "where should the allowable be transferred?". A review of the literature indicates that very few data are available to the engineer to assist him in answering these questions. It is the purpose of this paper to present information which may be of value in selecting the flooding technique and the injection and producing wells and in scheduling injection and production rates. Certain phases of these problems can be studied in the laboratory. The Potentiometric model is well suited for studying many waterflooding problems. This model assumes that steady-state flow exists, that the mobility ratio is equal to one and that gravitational effects are neglected.'-' The three-phase sand model also has been recognized as an effective means for studying certain reservoir problems. Both models were used in making the study reported here. This paper discusses seven cases utilizing various waterflooding techniques. Data for the first five cases were obtained on the potentiometric model. Data for Cases VI and VII were obtained by constructing and flooding an unconsolidated sand pack (a three-fluid-phase system) and by determining the swept area and cumulative oil recovery for various types of operations. APPARATUS AND PROCEDURE The potentiometric model reservoir was 30 in. long X 10 in. wide by about 1/2 in. deep. Four wells were equally spaced in a line array along the lateral center line. (See Fig. 1.) Well No. 1 initially was an injection well for each of the patterns reported. The cases studied with the potentiometric model and sand model are described herein. The laboratory sand model reservoir was a 30- 10-in. rectangular Lucite vessel packed with sand to a depth of about 0.65 in. Four wells were equally spaced in a line array along the lateral center line. The reservoir material was an unconsolidated sand into which the reservoir fluids were mixed to yield fluid saturations of 55 per cent oil, 25 per cent water and 20 per cent gas. The water was added to the sand and the material mixed, after which the oil was added. Kerosene and water, the fluids used, gave a viscosity ratio of 1.64:1. In packing the reservoir, care was taken to assure constant fluid saturations and constant porosities. A new mixture was prepared for each run. During water flooding, a colored water was injected by a constant rate pump. The injection rate was 1.1 B/D/ft of sand thickness. For this series of tests, each of the producing wells was open to the atmosphere and, as in the potentiometric model study, Well No. 1 initially was an injection well for each of the patterns. KESULTS OF POTENTIOMETKIC MODEL STUDlES Two cases (Cases I and 11) involving equal pressure injections were studied, with the following results. Case Water injection was initiated at Well No. 1; the producing wells (Nos. 2, 3 and 4) were operated at constant and equal bottom-hole pressures. When water broke through at Well No. 2 and achieved the selected water-oil ratio, Well 2 was converted to a water injection well, resulting in two injection and two producing wells. The injection pressures at Wells 1 and 2 were maintained equal and constant; pressures at the producing wells were held equal, but they were lower than those at the injecting wells. THIS paper is presented in the hope that it will be instructive in view of the future large expansion of the mining industry in the west-coast countries of South America. There is a more or less general impression that the Spanish-American workman is inferior to the American, but after some years of experience and observation I doubt the correctness of this view. Taking into consideration all the elements which make for efficiency of labor, it has been found, particularly in Chile, that under proper organization native labor yields as much, man for man, and more, dollar for dollar, than in the Western United States. If a manager is willing to accept unreservedly the c costumbres del pais, without combating intelligently and patiently the ones tending to inefficiency, he should expect no better results than he deserves. He must conscientiously insist that a " square deal " be given and exacted; that liquor be excluded from camp as far as possible; that comfortable quarters and other uplifting elements of life be provided; and that the costumbres del pais shall not be over-ridden roughshod. He should also insist upon the gradual and reasonable adjustment of these conditions to the exigencies of the work; and (by no means the least difficult of his tasks) he should select the most competent men to patiently direct and teach the natives in the several departments, and by their own example encourage self-respect and decency. While the Braden mine is by no means as yet operated on a large scale, according to modern rating, it will nevertheless be interesting to note what has actually been accomplished there. The effect of loam on the permeability of porous media to water was studied as a {unction of foaming agent concentration, specific permeability, pressure gradient, length of a porous medium and its oil saturation. At a given fluid saturation in a porous medium, the permeability to water was found to be the same whether loam was present or not. Foam decreases the permeability to water by developing a higher trapped gas saturation than that obtained by water flooding without loam present, increasing the concentration of foaming agent increased the trapped gas saturation and thereby decreased the permeability to water. The presence of oil reduced the capability of most foaming agents to decrease the permeability of a porous medium to water. A few surfactants were found to be effective loaming agents even in the presence of oil. These results are similar to those reported in a previous paper on the effect of loam on the permeability of porous media to gas. The effect of loam was found to persist in long porous media at moderately high reservoir temperatures and during the passage of many pore volumes of surfactant-free water. INTRODUCTION This paper describes part of a study on a novel approach in the use of surfactants for oil recovery; the use of foam rather than water to displace oil. Previously it was found that foam can displace oil which normally is not displaced by water.4 The foam is formed by successively injecting a suitable surfactant solution and gas into a porous medium. Foam appears to have at least two uses in the field: (1) it shows promise as a superior oil recovery agent, and (2) it shows promise as a selective permeability reducing agent. Foam may be very useful in water floods, or in other oil recovery processes, where highly permeable streaks or unfavorable mobility ratios are a problem. A previous paper reported the effect of foam on the permeability of porous media to gas.1 In the present study the effect of foam on the permeability of porous media to water is reported. The specific objectives of the study were to determine: (1) the effect of foam on the permeability to water in porous media of various specific permeabilities, (2) the effect of foam on the permeability to water in the presence of oil, (3) the effect of foam and crude oil on the trapped gas saturation, (4) the effect of foam on permeability to water at trapped gas saturation, (5) the effect of pressure gradient on the permeability to water under foaming conditions, (6) the persistence of foam during the passage of surfactant-free water through the porous medium, and (7) the effect of various foaming agents, length of the porous medium and temperature on the permeability reduction caused by foam. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES EQUIPMENT AND MATERIALS The experimental apparatus consisted of consolidated and unco n soli dated porous media, wet test meters and constant delivery pumps. The porous media consisted of consolidated sandstone cores (6 to 36 in. long), and unconsolidated sand packs (3 to 30 ft long). The consolidated cores had permeabilities of 32 and 1,000 md and porosities of about 20 per cent. The sand packs had permeabilities of 3,500 to 211,000 md and porosities of about 40 per cent. (Throughout this report a term such as 100 md sand" is used. This term means that the porous medium had a dry, nitrogen permeability of 100 md.) Fluids used in the experiments were distilled water, 1 per cent NaCl solution, aqueous solutions of foaming agents, nitrogen gas, air and crude oil.

For several years International Minerals & Chem-ical Corp. has used a radiation method to assay potassium content of products from potash and feldspar beneficiation. The procedure is rapid, accurate, and inexpensive and is easily handled, if necessary, by nontechnical personnel. Data are presented to show the accuracies that may be expected if the technique is used for control of pilot plants or large-scale plants. Natural potassium is composed of three isotopes —K, K and K. Five other isotopes, artificially produced, have been detected. In natural potassium only the K isotope, with a half life of 1.4x10 years, is radioactive. Its modes of decay are beta and gamma rays, positrons, and x-rays. Only the more abundant beta rays, however, are important in radiation measurements using geiger tubes. Barnes and Salley' measured radiation of potassium salts in solution in 1943. Gaudin and Parnell2 first reported the use of solid salts arranged in a vessel surrounding the ß counter in 1948. Later, Scheel used the method to assay potassium content of various crude and finished potash salts. Experimental: Dip-type Geiger-Muller tubes (TGC-5) supplied by Tracerlab Co. were used in all radiation counting measurements. The tube was encompassed by a glass container about M in. larger in diameter than the tube. This container, which served as a sample holder, was closed at the bottom with a rubber stopper to facilitate removing the samples. Samples were not weighed, but about 40 g of sample were needed for each test. Electrical impulses from the tube were counted on either a Tracerlab scaler or a rate meter. To obviate the need for constant attendance, preset features were incorporated into the scalers, so that at a predetermined time or count the units were automatically deactivated. When rate meters were used, counting rates were read directly from instrument or from a recorder used in conjunction with the rate meter. Each tube was calibrated, according to the manufacturer's instructions, to determine the correct operating voltage to insure reproducible results. A linear calibration plot of percent K2O vs counting rate was also obtained for each tube by recording the counting rate plus background count of several standards of different K2O content chemically analyzed by the chloroplatinate method.' These standards were of approximately the same particle size distribution as samples to be assayed. Specific background count caused by cosmic rays and other surrounding radiation was checked periodically by counting a sample of pure NaCl. Fig. 1 is a representative calibration plot. Assays were determined directly from the standard plot or calculated by subtracting the background count from the counting rate, then multiplying by the slope of the line. Chemical assays of the test samples were made by the Sherril method," a flame photometric technique, or the chloroplatinate method. Data: The radiation assay method has been used for three years by International Minerals & Chemical Corp. in the laboratory and in pilot plants processing ores containing potassium. These dry concentration plants process sylvinite and langbeinite ores at Carlsbad, N. M., and feldspar ores at Top-sham, Maine. Sylvinite ore is predominantly a mixture of syl-vite (impure KCl) and halite (impure NaCl). Contaminants include sulfates, such as langbeinite (2MgSO - K2SO4), kieserite (MgSO H2O), poly-halite (MgSO4.K2SO, 2CaSO, . 2H2O), and slimes. Langbeinite ore is predominantly langbeinite and halite with small amounts of sylvite, sulfates other than langbeinite, and slimes. Several variables, in addition to correct calibration and standardization of tubes, were found to be important in obtaining reproducible results. The dilhsion of silver and trace concentrations of tin in liquid silver has been rrzeasured in the temperature range from about 975° to 1350°C. The higher diffusivity of tin is interpreted in terms of the coullombic repulsion which results from the fact that tin dissolved in silver has a valence of +3 relative to silver. THE phenomenon of diffusion has been well-described theoretically for hard-sphere gases and solids and found to be in good agreement with experimental data for certain gases and solids. Liquid-diffusion phenomena have not been well described theoretically and there is generally a lack of good experimental data. In this investigation self-diffusion and solute diffusion in liquid silver were studied. Silver was chosen as a solvent for two main reasons. First, silver is a noble metal and the atoms are considered to have a spherically symmetric charge field; hence the liquid may be considered to be a random array of approximate hard spheres. Mercury, gallium, and other lower-melting metals were eliminated from consideration since it appears possible that in their liquid states there is some residual long-range order and directional bonding. Second, silver behaves as a monovalent solvent and, while cadmium, indium, tin, and antimony all have nearly the same atomic size, they have chemical valences relative to that of silver of +1, +2, + 3, and +4, respectively. Slifkin, Lazarus, and coworkers1-5 investigated the diffusion of these solutes in solid silver and found that their diffusion rates increased with an increase of the excess valence of the solute. In the solid state the diffusion-rate increase was calculated to be due to a change in local modulus of the solvent caused by the excess valence of the solute.1"3 For the present investigation it was planned to determine the effect of valence upon solute diffusion in liquid silver. It was deduced that a coulombic repulsion between solute and solvent might be responsible for larger volume fluctuations in the vicinity of the solute thereby enhancing the diffusion of the solute atoms. Tin was the first solute investigated and was chosen for experimental convenience. If an excess-valence diffusion effect exists in the liquid state, the solute tin with its excess valence of + 3 might show a large enough effect to distinguish it from the self-diffusion of silver in silver. The silver self-diffusion data were obviously required as a base line for comparison. In addition silver self-diffusion was investigated with a view toward examining the data in connection with the Sutherland- Einstein: Coheen-Turnbull,7 and swalin8 theories of diffusion in liquids. I) EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES The diffusion coefficients for tin and silver in liquid silver were determined in separate experiments using the capillary-reservoir method of Anderson and saddingtono but following closely the experimental techniques outlined by Ma and Swa1in. The radioactive alloy bath was prepared by plating either tin-113 or silver-110 m isotope* onto 99.999 *Isotopes obtained from Oak Ridge National Laboratory. pct Ag rods.* The silver and isotope were melted *Silver obtained from Cominco Co. and mixed in a graphite crucible under a purified argon atmosphere, then outgassed for capillary filling. Some of the fused-silica capillaries were filled individually as reported by Ma and Swalin, but most were filled in a different manner. A long piece of capillary tubing was sealed off on one end and held in the system so that the open end was just above the surface of the molten alloy. The system was evacuated, the open end submerged into the alloy, and argon was admitted into the system up to atmospheric pressure. The molten alloy was forced up the capillary several inches where it solidified and was subsequently cut into segments of the proper length for diffusion annealing. The apparatus for diffusion annealing was the same as that used for capillary filling except that a Pt—Pt, 10 pct Rh therinocouple was placed in the solvent bath in order to accurately measure the temperature during the run.
