Specimens of the alloy CU3AU in the ordered and disordered states were subjected to explosive loading at shock pressures in the range from 160 to 475 kbars. The resulting changes in the resistivity, stored energy, microhardness, and microstructure were determined. By comparing the effects of explosive loading on ordered and disordered specimens a separation of structura1 and configurational changes has been made. In the pressure range from 290 to 370 kbars, representing a small increment of strain, the degree of long-range order in the ordered alloy decreased sharply. This change is attributed to the generation of shear stresses in excess of the theoretical shear strength of the alloy. Disordered CU3AU under explosive loading behaves in a manner considered to be characteristic of fee solid-solution alloys generally. The response of metals to high-velocity deformation and, in particular, to explosive loading has attracted much interest in recent years.' In general, metals are substantially strengthened by the passage of shock waves although the permanent strains are small. Explosive loading induces this strengthening by causing the metal to undergo rapidly a transient strain in a narrow region, first in the shock front and then in the rarefaction wave, which releases the pressure. The transient strain is given by e = 4/3 In V/Vo, where Vo and v are the specific volumes in the uncompressed and compressed states.2 The process produces many defects, which account for the strengthening. For the investigation reported here, an ordered alloy was chosen because it was expected to give sensitive indications of the near-neighbor effects produced by shock waves. The ordered alloy CU3AU was of special interest because of past work on the effects of conventional deformation on this alloy.314 The disordered alloy was included as a standard for comparison and as an alloy typical of a solid solution containing short-range order. The effects of explosive loading were followed by measurements of the resistivity, stored energy, and microhardness, and by metallographic examination. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Preparation of Specimens. Part of an ingot of the alloy Cu3Au prepared previously4 was cold-rolled with several intermediate anneals in vacuum to a final thickness of 0.042 in. Specimens of dimensions 2.0 by 1.0 by 0.042 in. were machined from this strip. After a recrystallization treatment of 1 hr at 565oC, half of the specimens were disordered by heating in evacuated Pyrex capsules for 1 hr at 460°C and quenching into water. Although they contained short-range order, they will be referred to as 'disordered" to indicate the absence of long-range order. The rest of the specimens were cooled slowly from 380°C to induce long-range order. The grain size of the ordered and disordered specimens was 0.012 mm. Explosive Loading. This was carried out at the Eastern Laboratory, Explosives Department, E. AS this is the age of reform, a uniform mining law for North America is a moot subject for discussion at this meeting of the Institute. The question is one of peculiarly technical and, in many respects, local character. We all appreciate the value of the metal-producing industries and recognize the necessity and importance of a well-considered and evenly balanced mining law as a branch of our jurisprudence either for the Provinces or the Dominion as a whole. Mining has taken its place as a forempst industry and legislation that seeks to control and govern it is the concern of not only the active miner but the citizens of the state. A law that, through its charitable measures brings into being the prospector, the pathfinder and superstructure of all mining activity and industry! protects his interests, safeguards invested capital, and encourages and enforces development, possesses at least the salient requirements of a businesslike Act. The manner of doing so is, I think, one of local and internal concern. May I be permitted to say without presumption that of the five mining codes, or Acts, that we have in the Dominion of Canada born and bred within the Provinces of British Columbia, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia, some of them could be materially improved. In many respects they do not measure up to the times; they were no -doubt creations of merit at the date of their .birth but they have not been clothed in seasonable raiment as the years passed by. It is a stern fundamental principle that all natural resources are the inalienable property of the crown. If it is mineral land, then it follows for the protection of the state and the direct advancement of the occupant that the land should be developed as such. The method or machincry by which this must be accomplished is a matter of detail, not of principle. If the right to possession as a licensee depends on discovery, it is not inconsistent with the duty the crown owes to the state that a grant in fee should pass to the discoverer if there is imposed, after patent issues, a requirement of continuous work or the alternative of an acreage tax sufficiently burdensome to make it unprofitable that the land should be held in an undeveloped state. If this requirement is recognized, the mental distinction between a grant and lease ceases to exist. A

THAT neither the Reconstruction Finance Corp. nor its subsidiary, the Metals Reserve Corp., are in competition with private enterprise was stressed by Charles B. Henderson in an informal talk before the N. Y. Section, A.I.M.E., on Sept. 23. Among other things, the speaker stated that the R.F.C., since its establishment, had authorized loans of $12,000,000, of which over $8,775,000 has actually been distributed. Of this amount, over $6,600,000 has been repaid. None of this money was appropriated by Congress, the sole assistance from that body being the initial authorization of $500,000,000 capital stock.

The interpretation of notched-bar impact results has been a matter of controversy since the introduction of more or less standard tests by Fremont,' Charpy2 and others at the turn of the century. Many investigators3-l1 have contributed to the understanding of the significance of such tests. Several symposiums12,13 have been held with the express purpose of discussing the significance and interpretation of the impact tests. It is not the purpose of this paper to review all these contributions to the development of the knowledge on this subject, but rather to present an interpretation of notched-bar impact tests that appears to be in agreement with the available published data. Fundamentally, the interpretation discussed in this paper of the brittle failure of some steels in notched-bar impact test is similar to the qualitative analysis presented by Ludwik3 in the I92o's. Essentially, Ludwik stated that the function of the notch was to increase the tensile stress necessary for yielding, and that brittle failure occurred when the stress necessary for yielding exceeded the normal stress required for fracture (with no plastic deformation). Ludwik, however, had no means of measuring this normal stress necessary for failure of a plastically* undeformed metal, therefore he could not extend his interpretation beyond the qualitative stage. Kuntze14 and recently Mc-Adam15 attempted to determine the effect of deformation on the stress necessary for fracture by testing, in tension, specimens notched to various depths and angles. Because of the uncertainties in Kuntze's (and McAdam's) analysis of the stresses (which have been pointed out by Sachs16) and the inherent nonuniformity in the stress distribution in notched bars, the results of such investigations are difficult to interpret. A more direct method of measuring the effect of deformation on the fracture stress was suggested in previous papers"-18 and has been utilized in the present investigation. The present paper concerns itself primarily with the behavior of notched impact specimens. The effects of strain rate, temperature, and stress distribution, which are discussed with reference to the impact specimen, apply just as well to the behavior of metal at the bases of notches in any engineering structure. All that is necessary is to determine the stress distribution in the structure at the base of the notches.

The demands of the petroleum and chemical industries for steels to be used in pressure vessels and similar structures at artificially low temperatures are continually increasing, and the writing of proper specifications with suitable tests becomes increasingly important. Likewise, the selection of suitable steels for such applications is of increasing concern to the metallurgist. It is generally recognized that highly alloyed steels of the austenitic stainless type retain their properties even at very low temperatures and represent the best technological solution of the low-temperature steel problem. However, in many instances less expensive carbon or low-alloy steels suitable for service within limited temperature ranges are available. The problem thus becomes one of defining the various factors involved in the production and fabrication of these less expensive steels and determining the temperature ranges in which their properties justify engineering application. Most of the applications involve welded structures, and the heat effect of welding as well as the nature of the weld metal are matters of prime concern. The first problem that the metallurgist faces is the determination of the type of test to be used as a criterion of the performance of the steel in low-temperature service. It has been generally recognized that the static properties of steel as determined in the ordinary tensile test undergo a gradual and relatively slight change as the temperature of test is lowered in the range of current interest; i.e., from room temperature to minus 120' C. It is further generally recognized that the behavior of steel under impact involving notch sensitivity is definitely affected at the lower temperatures. While the major subject of this paper is the effect of grain-refining deoxidizers, of low-alloy additions and of welding on the low-temperature notched-bar impact properties, an inquiry into the general behavior of steel under low-temperature impact testing is included. Abstract-Although the ore microscopist routinely examines polished sections to determine the mineralogy and texture of ores, his importance to the solution of problems peripheral to geology is not always fully realized. The techniques which he uses can be applied with little modification to the solution of a wide variety of beneficiation problem. By extending his studies beyond those normally considered to be of interest to the geologist, he can include examinations of polished sections of selected mill products. This is a logical extension, because the minerals and textures in the polished sections of ores are the same as those in mill Products. The mill dressing engineer should be more aware of the types of beneficiation problems that can be solved by the ore microscopist and what the ore microscopist can do for him. A greater degree of cooperation between the ore microscopist and the mill dressing engineer can be of significant mutual benefit. Ore microscopy holds an advantage over chemical analysis, because the interrelations and combinations of the mineral constituents of an ore or mil1 product can be visually determined. This advantage provides solutions to many beneficiation problems. Locking is a type of beneficiation problem that is particularly amenable to ore microscopy. The percentage, type, and distribution of locked particles can be readily determined with the aid of an ore microscope and an estimate made of the extent of additional grinding required for liberation. The extent of intimately locked types, which no reasonable amount of grinding will liberate, can also be evaluated. Mineral coating conditions, free particles of a deleterious mineral, and free particles of a valuable mineral held in floculated clusters of gangue are other features that can readily be observed. In some instances, visual examination may show that the problem is not one of locking. Photomicrographs illustrate the variety of beneficiation problems for which the ore microscope is applicable. These problems and their resolution demonstrate the importance of the instrument and show the value of close coordination between the mill dressing engineer and the ore microscopist.

The Hallimond tube flotation of sphalerite and pyrite with sulfhydryl collectors has been found to be inhibited near neutral pH in the presence of copper salts. Alkalimetric titration studies of the reactions between collector and activator indicate that this effect is apparently related to the formation of basic copper collector complexes. The conditions of formation of these compounds and their stability are in good agreement with the depression observed in flotation experiments. The general procedure employed in the flotation of zinc sulfide minerals requires activation of the mineral surface by heavy metal ions, usually copper, which react more easily than zinc with the common short-chain ionic sulfhydryl collectors.' Commercially, zinc flotation is carried out under alkaline conditions (pH 7 to 10.5), but small-scale experiments indicate that zinc sulfide minerals can also be activated and collected under acid conditions. Selectivity, however, becomes poor at low pH and undesirable materials such as pyrite, silicates and carbonates tend to report in the float. Several years ago, Wark and Sutherland~, measured the contact angles of air bubbles on copper-activated sphalerite immersed in various sulfhydryl collector solutions. MUCH descriptive matter has appeared on the subject of suspension roof supports, or roof bolting, as it is more commonly called. The widespread introduction of roof bolting into coal mines and metal mines is truly phenomenal. Mine operators were quick to recognize the advantages of supporting wide openings without hindrance to machine maneuverability and ventilation. Although suspension roof support has long been installed at St. Joseph Lead Co. mines in southeast Missouri,'" its application to coal mining presented new problems, such as proper anchorage and bearing for the bolts, bolt diameter, and spacing of bolts. After continuous testing and experimenting at the mines, standard roof-bolting materials were determined.'!' The study reported in this paper is not concerned with such details as bolt diameter, which may be considered already solved in practice. In the tests discussed here, small models patterned on actual bolts were found to function in the same way and as satisfactorily as their prototypes. The aim of these tests was rather to investigate the influence of roof-bolting systems on the stress distribution around mine openings and to study the fracture patterns obtained in actual testing. Little was found about this in the literature, as testing of suspension roof methods and quantitative measurements are only now coming to the fore. Several suggestions and actual measurements have been made to evaluate critically the functioning of roof bolting systems, single roof bolts, and parts thereof. Outstanding among them is Bucky's outline of structural model tests.'" Since none of the suggested testing equipment was available, however, for the experiments discussed below, a different approach was chosen. The response of a mine roof under stress has often been compared to that of a beam. The slow coming down and bending through of beam or plate-like banks of shale, sandstone, or top coal is a familiar occurrence, extensively cited in the literature." It was felt that testing of roof-bolt systems installed in a concrete beam which was loaded in bending would be a fair approximation of the behavior of a mine roof underground. Another school of thought considers the roof behavior over an underground opening in connection with the stress distribution all around a circular or rectangular opening. This is more accurate, and leads to the concept of a dome-shaped zone of material destroyed under tensile stress. This is likewise a common sight in unsupported roadways where the continuous fall of roof results in what has been called the natural outline of roof fracture. This theory could not be tested and is treated separately in Appendix B. It is important to note that according to both assumptions the immediate roof fails in tension; the use of a beam in these tests, therefore, should give information valid for either of the two theories. With the testing equipment at hand it was possible to load concrete beams 6xlx0.5 ft under two-point loading, giving an equal bending moment over the center part in which the model bolts were installed. A comparison was made of the ultimate loads needed to break plain beams and beams in which roof bolts were installed. Arrangements were made with: 1—plain beams; 2—bolts with plate washers, some with holes drilled at 90" angles and others with holes drilled at 45" angles; 3—bolts with channel irons underneath; 4—bolts in holes filled afterward with cement; and 5—bolts anchored in a stronger stratum. The foregoing arrangement is made in order of increasing strength, as assumed from the theory of reinforced concrete. Likewise, laminated beams with wooden model bolts and with combinations of the foregoing set-ups were tested. All in all, 21 experiments were made out of the much greater number of combinations possible. There were, too, some trial tests. Enough observations from this limited number were made to interpret the behavior of mine roof, supported by various types of suspension bolts, at fracture. In present-day concepts, which have been proved by mathematical derivations and stress analyses, any opening driven underground will change the distribution and magnitude of the stresses existing around it. It does not matter whether the stresses become visible, as in rocks whose strength is less than the forces acting upon them, or whether they are invisible, as in the gangways lacking evidence of rock pressure. In this latter case the rocks can withstand changes in stress-distribution. To consider the mine roof as a beam, there are, with transversal loading, tensile stresses in the lower fiber and compressive stresses in the upper layers above the neutral axis of the beam. Beams of brittle material such as rock and concrete fail exactly as shown in Fig. 1. Nearly all model beams showed the same fracture pattern as that of a tension crack. (Butte Meeting, August, 1913.) GENERAL. THE Tooele plant. off the International Smelting & Refining Co. is situated at the mouth of Pine canyon, Tooele county, Utah. It is connected with the main line of the San Pedro, Los Angeles & Salt Lake railroad by the Tooele Valley. railway, and is about 7 miles from Tooele Junction. Fig,. 1 is a general view of the plant. The copper plant has been in operation since July, 1910, and the first blast furnace it the lead plant was blown in on Feb. 29, 1912. The location of the plant was selected on sloping ground with the idea of using gravity to the fullest extent and thus keeping labor at a minimum. Practically the entire plant is constructed of steel, reinforced concrete, and. brick.

It has been repeatedly questioned whether estimates of oil reserves are of any practical value, as the greater number of such calculations previously made have subsequently been proved to be grossly inaccurate. But even admitting partial justification for such statements, it must be evident that some idea, however approximate, of the available reserves of essential minerals is of vital importance in mapping their development and the future trend of the related industries, particularly if it is kept constantly in mind that these estimates—which are never intended as a final word—must be continually subject to revision in accordance with the changes in their component factors. The value of these estimates, therefore, hinges on the clear understanding that they can only apply within the limited time when the controlling factors remain unchanged. It should be understood, however, that while estimates of possible and probable oil deposits are as a rule but idle conjectures, appraisals of proven oil reserves can undoubtedly be made with an ever-increasing degree of accuracy. And it is with this in mind that in the present study the endeavor has been to estimate only the world's proven oil reserves—the oil that yet remains underground in the producing fields—and their logical extensions, and to leave out of consideration the questionable volume of the probable and possible oil reserves. In Table 1 the countries at present producing oil in commercial quantities are listed in the order of the magnitude of their proven reserves. As shown in the table, the world's proven oil reserves are estimated at over 24 billion barrels, while the total production to the end of 1932 aggregates nearly 23 billions. Past production represents, therefore, 48 per cent, and proven reserves approximately 52 per cent of the total. About 61 per cent of the reserves are located in the American continent and close to 33 per cent in the Near East fields of Russia, Iraq and Persia. It is interesting to note that the proven reserves in the important producing regions almost equal if not exceed their production to date. The Mexican fields are a remarkable exception in this respect since they produced over 135 billion barrels and have proven reserves estimated at only 300 million barrels.

Recent experiments indicate that the usual type of concen-trating-table is not only poorly adapted to produce the desired results, but also is based upon an incorrect principle, namely, the use of riffles to perform the work of stratifying the various minerals. We have heard a good deal about riffles for concentratiug-tables; exhaustive experiments have been made to discover the proper form of riffle, or to prove the superiority of this or that form; disputes and patent-litigation have arisen over the matter of riffles, and thus marly have been led to believe that the riffle is the saving-device upon which the process of concentration depends. In the present paper it is proposed to show that the riffle is greatly overrated as to the part it performs in the concentration of minerals, and that, in the near future, it may possibly be eliminated entirely from that process. The experiments in question have shown that the troublesome riffle can be considered of secondary importance at the most, and should be so classed in the construction of a concen-trating-table built upon the right lines. The action of any form of riffle on a concentrating-table is such as to upset and retard the process of settling and stratifying the various minerals on the table-deck. From the deck of a riffled table no concentrates can be delivered until the deck is " bedded," that is, until a suffcient amount of metallic values has been fed to the table to spread over a large portion of the deck, forming a substratum of the heavier minerals. This substratum must be maintained by the feed within quite narrow limits, and directly proportional to the rate of discharge from the table, in order that the bed shall not be lost. On the other hand, the riffles having a very limited carrying-capacity, considerable care must be taken not to overfeed a riffled table, in which case the table proceeds, in mill parlance, to rob itself. The development of new processes and methods by The Pennsylvania State University to improve slate quarrying technology has centered in recent years on cutting and sawing stone in the quarry to eliminate a second cutting process in the mill. Two machines exhibit promise for this work: 1) a circular saw mounting diamonds or hard inserts to produce smaller sizes of stone and 2) a chain saw with insert cutting teeth to produce stone in the larger dimensions. Prototype machines have been constructed and tested in several Pennsylvania slate quarries, and one commercial installation has been operated for several months with a circular diamond saw. Other kinds of dimension stones may be cut by these saws. Research at Penn State has begun to study the fundamental cutting action of rotary tools or saws in slate and other dimension stones. A laboratory drill press is being instrumented to permit thrust-torque-rotational speed us penetration rate studies of single tooth cutting surfaces on stone. Machinability studies of slate conducted with tungsten-carbide inserts have been performed. The dimension stone industry generally accepts the rather basic premise that the larger the block removed from the quarry, the more practical and economical the operation. Thus, the concept of cutting to size any dimension stone while it remains in place in the parent bed would receive little consideration from the majority of members of the industry. However, the slate industry, which is usually considered a separate member of the dimension stone family, is pioneering in the development of an in-place sawing method. Before any final decision can be reached concerning a proposed new system, it is essential to take a long, hard look at the present method of operation in order to determine if the new system is indeed an improvement or even desirable. In the following section is a brief description of present quarry practice in the slate quarries of eastern Pennsylvania. PRESENT METHOD OF QUARRYING SLATE In the numerous slate quarries of Lehigh and Northampton Counties of Pennsylvania, the grain and cleavage of the slate are most often at right angles to each other; if a third surface is broken at right angles to these two natural planes of weakness, blocks of more or less rectangular shape can be separated.' In conventional quarrying a large calyx core drill prepares holes of 36-in. diam in which wire-saw standards are positioned. By wire sawing between strategically located core-drill holes, large sinks or benches of virgin slate are opened up. The sides freed by wire sawing will vary from quarry to quarry but generally are rectangular in shape with dimensions averaging 20 ft in length and about 15 ft in depth. Some quarries are fortunate in having a joint or natural parting to work to, which of course diminishes the amount of core drilling and wire sawing required. Once the various benches have been developed either through wire sawing alone or through a combination of wire sawing and natural jointing planes, the block removal proceeds in the following manner. A plug hole is drilled in the block with a compressed-air hammer and a feathering chisel is inserted in the hole to cause a fracture of the rock either with or against the grain as indicated by the positioning of the so-called feathers. This operation is referred to as sculping. After a block has been freed with and against the grain by means of wedging from the cross fracture with long bars or levers, the block is further freed along the cleavage plane by shimming it up with small wooden pieces in an operation known as styling. A large steel loading chain is wrapped around a block thus freed and the chain is attached to the wheel of an overhead cable. The block is then hoisted vertically to the cableway and moved along this cableway laterally to the lip or edge of the quarry. From here it is unloaded onto a rail car or truck for transportation to the processing mill. Except for occasional blasting to free stubborn blocks,

The solubility limit of oxygen in columbium has been determined in the range between 775' and 1100°C by means of lattice parameter measurements and microscopic examination. The solubility is a function of temperature and varies, in the range given above, from 0.25 to 1.0 pct O, respectively. BECAUSE of the marked deleterious effect of oxygen upon the mechanical properties of some of the transition metals, it is desirable to know something about the solubility of oxygen in these metals. The brittleness caused by oxygen in solution is particularly marked in the case of the group VA elements, vanadium, columbium, and tantalum. The solubility of oxygen in vanadium has already been reported in an earlier paper,' and Wasilewski2 has given a value (0.9 wt pct) for the solid solubility of oxygen in tantalum at 1050°C. Brauer3 in 1941 investigated the Cb-0 system up to Cb2O5, but made no real effort to investigate the extent of oxygen solubility in the metal. He made the observation, however, that this solubility must be less than 4.76 atom pct (0.86 wt pct) oxygen. This estimate was made from X-ray diffraction results on the alloys CbO, CbO, and CbO; all alloys consisted of the terminal (Cb) solid solution plus CbO, but the last alloy containing 4.76 atom pct 0 showed only three very weak CbO lines. It is surprising that Brauer, by examining only three alloys, arrived at an estimate of the solubility which agrees very well with the results to be reported herein. Experimental Procedure A columbium strip obtained from Fansteel Metallurgical Products was cut into strips, 0.020x1/2x2 in. Two holes, about 3/16 in. in diameter, were made near the ends of the strips in order to hold them against a flat steel block for mounting in a General Electric X-ray spectrometer for lattice parameter measurements. The same holes were used to hang the specimens inside a fused silica vacuum furnace tube which was part of a Sieverts' gas absorption apparatus. The apparatus and method of adding oxygen gas has been previously described.1 According to the supplier, the columbium obtained had the analysis given in Table I. After degreasing the samples, approximately 0.001 in. was etched from each side of the samples in order to remove possible surface impurities from the last rolling operation. For this purpose the following cold acid pickle was found satisfactory: 8 parts HNO3, 2 parts H2O2 and 1 part HF. Various Cb-O compositions were obtained up to 0.75 wt pct O by the gas absorption and diffusion technique. After the sample had absorbed all the oxygen gas added at 1000°C, an additional 24 hr was allowed for homogenization. This treatment appeared to be adequate, as shown by the linearity of the lattice parameter-composition plot. More concentrated alloys were prepared by arc melting mixtures of Cb and Cb2O5 since it was very time-consuming to make Cb-0 alloys in the neighborhood of 1 pct O, or over, by the diffusion method. When the flat strip specimens were used, they were ready for the X-ray spectrometer after cooling from the Sieverts' apparatus. The cooling rate obtained by merely allowing the hot fused silica furnace tube to radiate to the atmosphere (when the furnace was lowered) was sufficiently fast to keep the dissolved oxygen in solution. Arc-melted alloys were reduced to —200 mesh powder in a diamond mortar, wrapped in tantalum foil, sealed off in evacuated fused silica tubes, and then heat treated as indicated in Table 11. The fused silica tubes were quickly immersed in cold water without breaking the tubes after the heat treatments. The tantalum foil prevented reaction between the fused silica and the sample; there was no reaction between the powdered samples and the foil at 1000°C, but some trouble was experienced at 1100°C. At this temperature level a reaction between the sample and the foil was sometimes observed, which resulted in erroneous parameter values. Experimental Results Hardness Tests: Since most of the X-ray samples were in the form of flat strip, it was convenient to obtain Vickers hardness numbers as a function of oxygen content. Compared to the V-O case,' oxygen hardens columbium much more slowly, presumably because of the larger octahedral volume in colum-bium (about 12.0 compared to 9.3Å3 in vanadium), hence, requiring less lattice strain for solution. The plot of VHN vs wt pct O is shown in Fig. 1.

In the petroleum industry, the process known as oil well cementing is the equivalent of pressure grouting in the mining and construction industries. The science of oil well cementing has been known and practiced for many years. At the present time it has been brought to a high degree of perfection in the handling of many different types of jobs, all of which are known as oil well cementing. In order to understand more easily these processes, we will discuss briefly several different types of oil well cementing jobs, the purposes for which they are performed, and the methods of their accomplishment. It is believed that some of .these procedures, in a modified form, can be applied to pressure grouting projects in general. Originally, oil well cementing consisted of placing a neat cement slurry about a steel casing set in a bore hole. Cement is used about these casings to protect them from the corrosive effects of ground waters, to protect the oil and gas zones from encroachment of undesired water from other levels, to prevent the blowing out of high pressure oil and gas zones from shallow levels, and to strengthen generally and support the casing being placed in the bore hole. After the bore hole is completed to the desired depth, casing is run into the well, pumps are attached to this casing and circulation of the mud fluid in the hole is established; this circulation being from the inside of the casing into the annulus about the casing, and thence back to the surface. Next, a cement slurry is mixed and pumped into the inside of the casing string, A plug, which acts as a piston within the casing, is placed above the cement slurry. This is to separate the top of the cement slurry from mud or water which is used to shove the cement down through the casing and out into the annulus. This plug further serves the purpose of shutting off against a baffle in the bottom end of the casing string, thus stopping the flow of cement out of the casing and leaving the shoe, or lower end of the casing, surrounded by cement and also filling the annulus there above. Casing strings cemented in the above described manner may vary in length from a few feet of large diameter pipe to very long lengths of smaller pipe. As of the present date the longest string of casing which has yet been cemented is some 16,600 ft deep. As a general rule, the deeper the well and the more cement slurry used, the higher the pressures which are required to place the slurry. In parts of West Texas, it is not uncommon to use 4000 sacks to cement a single string of casing in place. Machinery used to mix the cement and place it into the casing is mounted on heavy duty, powerfully equipped trucks which are capable of negotiating any type of highway or country roads. These trucks

IT is a distinct privilege to participate in this meeting convened to honor the memory of Henry Marion Howe, a distinguished scientist and metallurgist. Many have added to our rapidly growing fund of metallurgical knowledge but few have made the unique contribution of formulating basic concepts essential to an over-all comprehensive view of the subject of metallography. Of those previously selected to deliver this lecture, several have added a personal touch to their discourse because they were able to refer to their associations with Dr. Howe. It was not my good fortune to know him or to enjoy his inspiring influence. Like most of you, my contact has been with his published works, which are outstanding in that they provide lucid, detailed expositions of the nature and behavior of metals and alloys. His deep understanding and clarity of expression have greatly accelerated our progress in metallography and in the use of metals. The degree to which a man's thinking, experimentation and writing contribute toward an understanding of basic laws and phenomena determines whether his life's work is of transitory or permanent value. This occasion appropriately recognizes the fundamental importance of Dr. Howe's pioneer work in the field of metallurgy. On two former occasions, gray iron was selected as a subject for discussion. The fact that the production of pig iron has not been discussed before does not reflect any lack of interest on the part of Dr. Howe or former lecturers in the process that under- lies the production of steel. Although Dr. Howe's work in his later years centered around metallography, his earlier publications show a considerable interest in the production of iron and steel. He recognized that in the ascending spiral of metallurgical advancement we are not winding a single thread but are weaving a complex fabric. Specific evidence of his interest in the production of pig iron may be found in his book1 on The Metallography of Cast Iron and Steel. In explaining why blast furnaces have been in constant use for about 600 years, he says: "The process is economical because it utilizes with extraordinary completeness the calorific power of the coke due to the thorough transfer of heat from the gaseous products of combustion to the charge." This emphasis on heat transfer, overlooked in many more extended and more recent discussions of the blast-furnace process, illustrates Professor Howe's ability to see the essentials. Other distinct advantages of the blast furnace, such as the removal of much of the sulphur and practically all of the oxygen, were mentioned. It was also stated that although the blast- furnace process is complex in nature, its outward form is comparatively simple, thus permitting large-scale production at small labor costs. SEVERAL investigators, mainly concerned with the mechanical proper-ties of the alloys, have studied the so-called aluminum bronzes after various quenching and reheating treatments. Of these works, perhaps the most complete is that of Bouldoires,1 who studied changes of length, electrical conductivity, thermoelectric force, hardness and micro-structure oh tempering quenched alloys containing 5 to 20 per cent of aluminum, although the work of Carpenter and Edwards,2 Curry,3 Greenwood,4 Braesco,5 Matsuda;6,7 Grard8 and others has added much to our knowledge of the changes occurring during tempering. The so-called acicular ß decomposes on tempering at temperatures between 350° C. and the eutectoid, giving rise to a Widmanstätten structure of a needles in a matrix of d or fine a + d, associated with an increase in hardness and almost complete loss of ductility. Matsuda, studied the' eutectoid transformation by means of dilatation and electrical "conductivity measurements during cooling at different rates. He found that on cooling at the rate of 10° C. per minute there was a decrease in electrical resistance and in length instead of the usual increase which occurred with slow rates of cooling. On tempering the rapidly cooled samples, the increase commenced at about 400° C. and at 520° C. the resistance and length had reached the equilibrium values. These peculiarities he accounted for as being due to a transitional phase ß' being formed, ß having an electrical resistance and volume less than either ß or a + d.

It is stated by Dr. Tuttle in a paper read before the New Jersey Historical Society, that the celebrated Dickerson mine at Succasunna, Morris Co., N. J., yielded ore, about as early as 1710, for use at the Whippany forge, on Rockaway River, between Rockaway and Boonton. The ore was, for some time, free to all who chose to dig it. The tract embracing the Dickerson mine mas taken up, on account of its minerals, in 1713 or 1714, by John Reading, who sold it in 1716 to Joseph Kirkbride. John Jackson built a forge in 1722 on the Rockaway River a mile west of Dover. The ore here worked was probably chiefly from the Dickerson mine, but a portion may have been Hibernia. Hon. E. D. AN ESSENTIAL mental equipment for planning exploration is the fullest possible. knowledge of the way in which the orebodies occur in the region to be explored, also the realization that in no mining district is this knowledge complete, and that new: facts of importance will he revealed to the explorer in every exploration if he is in the proper frame of mind to grasp them. The geology, of the ore deposits of the Gogebic Range for a long, time was thought to be relatively simple, but work in recent years, by several men, has proved that this is not the case. We now realize that we are far from knowing all the factors that have resulted in the localization of ore deposits. For example, we have long known that the intersections of the dikes and. the foot wall were favorable places to look for ore, but only within the last few years have we learned that there are several horizons' in the various members, well north of the foot wall, that are likely to carry ore. The influence of the numerous cross faults on orebodies is not known or appreciated beyond a general realization that they are important. Just how they may be favorable or unfavorable to the localization of ore is not known. Such elementary information as the positions of these faults is just beginning to appear on the mine maps. Such being the condition, one can hardly overestimate the importance to the various operators and fee owners of careful studies of conditions in their properties for the purpose of assuring themselves that they are not missing valuable ore-that they are doing all the exploration that their situation demands in order to secure maximum returns. Valuable ores have been missed in the past and will be missed in the future. Only with a complete knowledge of all the factors that have united to produce ore could anything else be expected. The purpose of this paper is to call attention to these facts briefly and to suggest a few of the principles that should guide effective exploration. The foremost principle is that the man who starts out with the idea that he knows all about the mine geology of the Gogebic Range is starting with a heavy handicap.
