SINCE I have mentioned the art of alchemy in. many parts of this treatise of mine, especially when 'came to the description of the practice of various operations,* I do not here intend to argue as to whether it may be called true or not. But in case it is true, inasmuch as it is seen in operation to be a result dependent on the actions and virtues of fires, I should not pass by in silence without speaking at all of this art here, nor would I wish to do so, especially since I think that you do not really know what it is except in so far as common report is heard everywhere to the effect that whoever carries it to completion makes silver and gold with it. Because of this belief, many seek it with much time, labor, and expense, as I know you have often heard related, if not elsewhere, by me in the chapter on gold that I have written in this volume. Now do not think that I wish to teach you this art here, for I am one of those who do not know it. Therefore I shall tell you here, so that you may know more, only. that those workers who so eagerly follow after and seek it proceed by just two pathways. One is that which takes its enlightenment from the words of the wise philosophers, by means of which they think to attain it. This they call the just, holy, and good way, and they, say that in this they are but imitators and assistants of Nature, indeed, manipulators and true physicians-of .mineral bodies, purging them of superfluities and assisting them by augmenting their virtue and freeing them from their defects. In this way they sometimes proceed to corrupt these bodies in order to be able to separate the elements they contain so as to reduce them, if possible, to their primary materials, as they call them, or sometimes they convert them into new substances by means of this art or by adding another spirit different from the first one. Thus they seek in this way to bring these materials to a certain point of corruption or to a separation of elements, or to remove or add spirits to things, or to make coarse materials subtle and sometimes to make subtle materials coarse. Therefore, as you can understand, these persons, with bridle broken, run a circular track night and day, without ever having rest; and surely I do not know whether anyone has ever arrived at the desired goal. THERE is at least one concrete indication that Soviet Russia's two most important iron ore producing centers are seriously depleted. While keeping in mind Russia's penchant for reverse propaganda, one piece of evidence indicates that Magnitugorsk in the southern Urals and Krivoi Rog in the Ukraine have been mined to a point where lower grade ores are being recovered. An article in Pravda, Soviet newspaper, by I. P. Bardin. a Russian metallurgist, says that ore presently mined must undergo an expensive enriching cycle before it can be used in blast furnaces. Com- pounding Russian metallurgical troubles is the low quality of coking coals. High ash and sulphur content typifies the coal Badin talks about. Coal from the Ukraine, Eastern Siberia, Kazakhstan, and the Far East requires extensive treatment before it can be used, according to the article in Pravda.

IN reheating quenched steel to remove part of the hardness, the softening effect has generally been considered to be a function of temperature and time. The temperature effect is well known, and long before pyrometers were heard of the blacksmith was able to do a good job of tempering, by rule-of-thumb methods and experience in judging temperatures. Modern conditions, which demand steel that will withstand the severest tests, require that the heat treatment he carried out with every possible precaution to secure the best results obtainable. Pyrometers and heat-treatment furnaces of many types are on the market and improvements are continually being made so that it is now possible to regulate the temperature in heat treatment very accurately. There is -still a question regarding the time that the steel should be subjected to treatment. It is customary with all operators to insure the desired tem-pressure throughout the specimen and it is generally supposed that a longer treatment of a hardened steel produces a further softening but there are few published figures showing the exact effect of time of treat-ment at constant temperature. A search of the literature disclosed several brief statements that the tempering effect was a function of both time and temperature, but in no case were any figures given. The opinion is very generally held that the well-known tempering colors are accurate indicators of the degree of tempering. This is disputed by Brearley (The Heat Treatment of Tool Steel, page 102) who states: It has been said that the result would be the same in respect to both hardness and other properties whether the colors were obtained by a shorter heating at a higher temperature or a longer heating at a lower one. This, to say the least, is a very doubtful conclusion, and is certainly not borne out by mechanical tests on oil-hardened and tempered motor car steels, which, after tempering for periods varying from 15 min to 2 hr., show no very great differences. The present investigation had for its object the obtaining of some definite data regarding the effect of time, which might serve as a guide to those engaged in the heat treatment of steel. The solubility of oxygen in molten Fe-Cr alloys has been determined at 1550° , 1600°, and 1650°C for alloys containing up to alloyshasbeenabout 50 pct Cr and found to decrease as chromium increases to 6 pet and then to increase gradually. Phase relations in the Fe-Cr-0 system at steelmaking temperatures have been evaluated and two previously unreported oxides have been identified. OPERATIONS in the melting and refining of chromium steels are dependent to a major degree on the reactions of chromium and iron with oxygen and are primarily directed toward controlling and modifying these reactions to secure maximum advantage in the utilization of chromium. Although fairly effective practices have been developed empirically, understanding of the specific reactions is limited. Moreover, the ability of molten steel to dissolve oxygen that subsequently precipitates as oxide inclusions during solidification is well known, so that clarification of the effect of chromium on the nature and mechanism of formation of these inclusions is desirable. Study of the problem indicated that increased knowledge of the fundamental Fe-Cr-0 system is essential to further technical and economic improvement. Consequently, an investigation of the influence of chromium on the solubility of oxygen in molten iron and of phases and phase relations in the Fe-Cr-0 system was undertaken at the Metals Research Laboratories of the Electro Metallurgical Co. as part of a general program on the effective utilization of chromium in chromium steel production. Experimental Procedure All of the experimental runs made during this investigation were carried out in the rotating crucible induction furnace which has been described in detail in a previous publication.' In review, the principle underlying this furnace is that rotational forces in the crucible cause the molten metal to assume a concave shape in such a manner that the slag is contained in the molten metal cup, thereby minimizing slag/crucible contact and subsequent reaction. Practically all of the heats were melted in commercial-quality magnesia crucibles of the type usually furnished for laboratory induction furnaces. All of the runs were made under an argon atmosphere after the furnace chamber had been degassed. Bath temperatures were controlled by Pt—Pt-10 pct Rh thermocouples. The basic furnace charge consisted of a premelted 12 to 15 lb electrolytic iron slug which had been cast to a shape convenient for fitting into the rotating furnace crucible. A typical analysis of the electrolytic iron slugs is given in Table I. For certain runs, it was desirable to melt down charges containing high initial chromium contents. In these cases the chromium was added to the electrolytic iron during the premelting operations. Chromium was added to the rotating furnace bath in the form of electrolytic chromium of the analysis given in Table 11. In all of the constant temperature runs, the standard procedure was to melt down the electrolytic iron or alloy slug under vacuum, admit argon to slightly greater than atmospheric pressure, and adjust rotational speed to develop a well formed "cup" on the bath surface. The melt was then saturated with oxygen by an addition of ferric oxide and the temperature of the bath adjusted to within +5°C of the desired level. At this point the heat was permitted to come to equilibrium prior to sampling or further addition. This time interval was varied from 15 min to 2 hr but generally was about 20 min. After sampling, the desired chromium addition was made and the bath again equilibrated prior to subsequent sampling. This cycle of addition and sampling continued for the duration of the run which lasted from 4 to 8 hr. At the end of this period, power was shut off and the bath allowed to solidify in the furnace. Quenched metal samples were taken from the equilibrated melts by means of the "Taylor sampler" which has been described by Taylor and Chipman.' Before being submitted to chemical analysis, all samples were carefully examined for surface slag occlusions and cold shuts. Later in the study, each sample was radiographed and examined metal-lographically in cross-section to determine the presence of internal defects. On the basis of these examinations, sound and apparently clean specimens were selected from the Taylor samples for chemical analysis.

An investigation of the effect of size on the deformation properties of metal single crystals made it desirable to grow from the melt cylindrical aluminum single crystals possessing exactly the same crystallographic orientation but varying in diameter. Methods for the growth of rather large (up to 3 in. diam) aluminum single crystals in molds of the desired shape are well known. However, when one applies the same techniques to the growth of smaller (less than 1/8-in. diam) specimens many additional problems arise. Two of the major problems are the construction of the molds to be used and the removal of the thin specimens from these molds without deformation after growth has been completed. Also the problem of the constraint forces exerted by the mold on the specimen is much more pronounced for the smaller specimens. The technique described herein is a zone-melting method in which no mold is used since the surface tension of the molten metal and its oxide is sufficient to retain the melt. The specimen is suspended vertically in a manner similar to that of Keck and Golay.2 However, while Keck and Golay supported the specimen from both ends, the method used here supports the specimen only at the upper end. The surface tension of the molten aluminum and aluminum oxide contains the melt and suspends a length of newly grown crystal that has already passed through the molten zone until the weight of the newly grown crystal is equal to the component of surface tension holding the specimen together in the molten region. When the weight of the newly grown crystal is equal to the component of surface tension holding the specimen together the specimen pulls in two in the molten zone. The length of crystal which can be grown before this separation occurs varies with the diameter of the specimen and the size of the molten zone. In order to prevent the specimen from pulling in two a tube of glycerine is placed beneath the furnace in such a manner that the newly grown crystal passes into the glycerine which provides sufficient buoyancy to allow aluminum single crystals in wire form to be grown to lengths determined only by the length of the tube containing the glycerine. A schematic diagram of the experimental arrangement is shown in Fig. 1. The furnace used is constructed as follows. High-resistance nichrome wire is coiled on a 3/8-in. diam fused quartz tube. The distance between the windings is much less over a length of about 3/8 in. at the center so as to develop a hot spot. This core is located in the center of a 4-in. diam steel cylinder 5 in. in height and insulated from it by Kayolite. The temperature of the furnace is controlled by means of a thermocouple located near the central hot spot and a Minneapolis-Honeywell temperature controller. Temperature ins,ide the furnace is measured with a thermocouple and a standard potentiometer in the usual manner. By the above method it is possible to grow high-purity (99.99 pct Al) aluminum single-crystal wires over a range of sizes. Crystals varying from 1/8 to 1/64-in. diam were grown by the authors. Since the tube containing the glycerine cannot contain a crystal longer than approximately 3 ft, the growth of crystals longer than this presents another problem. The response of the Guard Electrode sonde (LL3) and the Laterolog (LL7) can be mathematically computed only for cases that do not represent realistic conditions. A resistance network analogue that simulates a number of typical—although idealized—formations was used instead to obtain, for both devices, a large number of resistivity logs and current distribution maps. From these data, charts were prepared for estimating true resistivities under a number of conditions. Some of these charts and current distribution maps are presented. INTRODUCTION Two main benefits are expected from a resistivity log: (1) obtaining geological information for mapping and other purposes, and (2) obtaining petrophysical data, based on true rock resistivity. The geological information can be derived from any resistivity curve having sufficient vertical detail, but true rock resistivities frequently are difficult to determine with desired accuracy because we do not have sufficient interpretation data. This is particularly true for the records given by the Laterolog tools. The object of this paper is to throw some light on the factors affecting the responses of these tools so that better resistivity data can be obtained from Laterologs. LATEROLOGS Laterolog measuring systems are of two types: the LL3 sonde, frequently called "Guard", and the LL7 sonde. Both measure the resistance between a single exploring electrode placed in the borehole and a faraway return electrode whose influence will be assumed here to be negligible. Although the principles of these tools have already been outlined,1-3 it is desirable to review them briefly in this article. LL3 Fig. 1, left side, represents a long cylindrical, vertical current electrode placed in a medium of uniform resistivity. The current leaving the center section of the electrode flows essentially along horizontal lines, delineating a surface having the shape of a biconcave lens. It is the elec- trical resistance offered to this particular group of current lines that is measured by the Guard tool. This is done in practice by having a long cylindrical electrode consisting of three sections physically and electrically separated by thin insulating washers, as shown in the center of the figure, and keeping the three sections at the same potential. It is obvious, for all practical purposes, that the current and potential distributions about this electrode are the same, as if we had a continuous electrode of same dimensions. Because the three sections are electrically separated, the resistance seen by the center section E can be independently measured. This section will be called the exploring electrbde, or E electrode. Its height generally is from a few inches to 1 ft. The outer sections are the guards G, which are several feet long. The combined length of the three sections is from 10 to 12 ft for the tools currently used in the petroleum industry. Let V denote the potential difference between E and the faraway return electrode, and I be the current flowing between these two electrodes. The resistance (Re) seen by the exploring electrode is VII, and the corresponding apparent resistivity is Ra = k(Re),............(1) where k is the tool calibration factor. The previous description establishes that the Guard tool uses that central portion of the sonde from which, in a uniform medium, the current follows essentially horizontal paths. The isothermal formation of martensite is studied in Fe-Ni-Mn and Fe-Mn-C alloys under conditions where the athermal transformation is completely avoided, there being no martensite present at the beginning of the isothermal reaction. The initial rate of martensite formation is extremely low under these conditions, but it increases greatly as soon as some martensite is formed. It appears that true initial characteristics of the isothermal reaction can be studied only in samples wherein the formation of martensite on cooling is completely eliminated. THE phenomenon of isothermal martensite formation is well established1 -" but the observations have been made in the presence of varying quantities of athermal martensite. Complete avoidance of athermal martensite and the formation of martensite under pure isothermal conditions have been reported by Kurdjumov and Maksimova2 in an Fe-Ni-Mn alloy (23 pct Ni, 3.4 pct Mn, and the balance Fe) and have been confirmed by recent experiments of Cech and Hollomon in a similar alloy. In each case, the isothermal transformation rate was a maximum at the beginning of the transformation and decreased as the reaction proceeded. These initial transformation rates were used by Fisher7 for the confirmation of calculated nucleation rates based on classical nucleation theory extended to include the effect of elastic strain energy. Cech and Hollomon have admitted, however, that up to 3 pct martensite formed on cooling in their samples and thus was present at the initiation of their isothermal runs. In this paper, experiments on similar alloys are described, except that care was taken to remove the incidental martensite developed at the surface prior to the isothermal reaction. It is shown here that the reaction rate at the beginning of the strictly isothermal reaction is very low. As soon as some detectable amount of martensite is produced, the transformation rate increases rapidly but ultimately decreases as the reaction proceeds. When martensite is allowed to form isothermally in the presence of about 2 pct of prior martensite, the apparent initial reaction rate is a maximum and corresponds to the observations of Kurdjumov and Maksimova and Cech and Hollomon. It is evident that the cooperative nature of the martensitic reaction results in a significant stimulating or autocatalytic effect on the isothermal reaction rate. Experimental Procedure The chemical compositions of the alloys used in this investigation are listed in Table I. The Fe-Ni-Mn alloys A and B were melted in an induction furnace, cast into ingots 2 in. diam by 4 in. long, and forged into % in. diam rods. The manganese steel (alloy C) was melted in an arc furnace and cast into ceramic molds 1/4 in. diam by 5 in. long. The rods were sealed in evacuated Vycor tubes and homogenized at 1175" to 1200°C for 50 hr. The long homogenization resulted in some manganese loss from the surface, producing a thin layer of transformed material. This surface layer was removed by grinding and the specimens were then swaged to 0.050 in. diam wire. Measurements of electrical resistance were made with a Kelvin double bridge to follow the course of the martensitic transformation. A small permanent magnet was also useful in scanning an entire specimen for small localized quantities of martensite. This test is almost as sensitive as the electrical resistance method in detecting the presence of martensite (which is ferromagnetic in these alloys) and it was especially useful in deciding whether a specimen was completely free of martensite. The wire specimens (0.050 in. diam by 2.5 in. long) were sealed in evacuated tubes and austenitized for 5 min at 1150°C. The specimens were quenched into water and, unless otherwise stated, stress-relieved for 1 hr at 650 °C in order to induce greater uniformity in the subsequent martensitic transformation. As dem-

RELAXATION in metals has been studied in detail by many workers in recent years.1-5 These studies have shown that there is an energy-loss peak observed in a metal placed in mechanical resonance at low frequencies which may be correlated with various metallurgical processes. These experiments have been largely used to study single-phase materials. In order to study the effect of a finely dispersed second phase in a metal matrix upon this phenomenon, the relaxation behavior of an aluminum-aluminum oxide SAP-Type alloy in both the fine-grained as-extruded and coarse-grained recrystallized conditions was investigated by the use of internal-friction measurements. The alloys studied, designated MD 2100, consist of a matrix of commercial-purity aluminum containing a finely dispersed second phase of aluminum oxide. The aluminum oxide is present in this alloy in the form of fine platelets approximately 130A units thick and several microns on edge. The mean free path betwen dispersed platelets is approximately 0.5 p. The grain size of this alloy is extremely stable at temperatures as high as the melting temperature of the aluminum matrix. In the as-extruded condition the grain diameter is several microns, while in the recrystallized condition it is several millimeters in diameter. The damping characteristics of the alloy samples were determined using a torsional-pendulum device. The internal-friction constant was determined for this alloy in both the fine-grained as-extruded and coarse-grained recrystallized conditions over the temperature range from 343" to 923°K at frequencies of 0.9, 1.3, and 1.8 cycles per sec. An internal-friction peak was observed in testing the fine-grained alloys which was not observed for the coarse-grained alloys. This peak, which might be associated with a type of grain-boundary relaxation, was observed at each of the three different test frequencies for the fine-grained sample. The temperature at which the relaxation peak occurred for each of the three different frequencies is shown in Table I. From these data an activation energy of relaxation for each pair of frequencies was determined by comparing the temperature shift of the relaxation peak with frequency between each of the test frequencies, assuming that an Arrhenius-type rate equation is applicable. The activation energy of relaxation determined from these data is also shown in Table I. The mean value of the activation energy was about 6 kcal per mole. The activation energy for the relaxation process determined in this investigation indicates that the relaxation associated with the grain boundaries in this aluminum-aluminum oxide SAP-Type alloy is quite a different process than grain boundary relaxation in single-phase aluminum alloys. In these latter alloys, the activation energy for relaxation has been found to be the activation energy for self-diffusion, approximately 36 kcal per mole1,2 Where the activation energy is the same as the activation energy for self diffusion, it has been proposed that the relaxation phenomena is dependent upon vacancy formation and motion. It is apparent therefore, that, in this aluminum-aluminum oxide SAP-Type alloy, the relaxation must be due to another type of atom transport. It has been shown previously in studies of the high-temperature, low-stress, steady-state creep behavior of as-extruded aluminum SAP-Type alloys, that the activation energy for steady-state creep is one that may be characterized by the nucleation of dislocations from the grain boundaries. It is proposed that the relaxation behavior observed here is due to a similar effect. In this case, the internal-friction peak is a resonance behavior due to the time-dependent nucleation of dislocations from grain boundaries in the sample. A visitor to the Republic of South Africa might profitably make his first sightseeing objective the Voortrekker's Monument at the administrative capital, Pretoria. Here he will find memorialized in sculptured stone the epic of the migrations of Dutch colonists from the Cape in search of new pastures and to escape British rule. He will see depicted the battles with the Bantus who were coming south also in search of habitable land, the peace treaties with great chiefs and the rise of Afrikaaner leaders. An American will be struck by similarities in events with his own history as well as in clothes and in type of covered wagons of the colonists. Before the latter half of the 19th century, little that transpired in South Africa was of any great international moment. The country had not attracted a great many settlers (about 15,000 Europeans in 1800 compared to about 2 million in the American colonies in 1776). Although some gold was being mined the majority of population was engaged in trade or subsistence farming.

The feeling was so different from that existing in the United States among those engaged in producing coal that it made a profound impression on me, and many times since then I have speculated about the reasons for the difference in opinion in the two countries. Here, of course, our units are much smaller and more numerous, there is not so large a proportion of technically trained men, and we have the American trait of depreciating the things we do at home; but among those not actively

The dike here described is exposed in the workings of the Wedge and Bachelor mines, on the southern side of Red Canon, north of the town of Ouray, Colorado. Its course is north 80° east, or nearly east and west, and it hades to the north about 10°. It rarely outcrops, and was nowhere seen at the surface near the mines. A specimen collected by Dr. A. C. Spencer about two miles to the westward, near the mouth of Red Creek, indicates, however, a probable exposure of the dike near this point. The Wedge and Bachelor mines lie in a nearly horizontal series of fine-grained, light-grey sandstones, alternating with beds of very fine-grained shale of the same color. The shale as encountered underground is unusually compact and massive, but weathers readily on exposure, and splits much after the manner of ordinary shale. When fresh it closely resembles some finely arenaceous limestones, but it does not effervesce with acids, and is eseentially a fine, indurated, siliceous silt. Ely:1 "Conservation, narrowly and strictly considered, means the preservation in unimpaired efficiency of the resources of the earth; or in a condition so nearly unimpaired as the nature of the case, or Wise exhaustion, admits. And broadly considered, it means more than the word itself implies, for it naturally includes an examination of methods Whereby the natural inheritance of the human race may be improved; and still more broadly considered, and as used in popular discussion, it includes a treatment of the effects of productive conservation methods upon distribution. "Conservation means a sacrifice of the present generation to the future generations Whenever it is carried too far. There is a sharp limit to the economic sacrifice that we may reasonably ask the private person to make for even the present Welfare, and the limit is still sharper when we come to consider the interests of future generations." In a paper on the iron ores of America, presented to the Pan-American Scientific Congress at Washington, I have emphasized the fact that the reserves of iron ores in the two Americas are enormously in excess of the requirements of the present generation, in fact, so large that no shortage is to be anticipated for many generations in the future; that a large part of the value of iron ores is put into them by man's efforts to make them available. This fact is fundamental for the intelligent consideration of- policies of conservation as applied to iron ore. As I interpret it, this fact makes it practically unnecessary that the present generation should make any especial sacrifice for future generations in the way of conservation of its iron-ore resources. Even if we were disposed to look forward to a period of 100 or 200 years, with a view to insuring the welfare of the people living at that time, it is doubtful whether any procedure we could now formulate would materially help them in the matter of iron ores, so large are the reserves available. In order that an appeal for conservation may be effective it must obviously favor the welfare of the present or immediately following generations; it must promise benefits to general and individual welfare during a period within the range of comprehension of the average man.

The consequences of this fact on the use of the concept "hydraulic radius" in the case of porous media are examined. The validity for consolidated sands of Kozeny's rela- tionship and of the formula derived by Carman for capillary rise are discussed. INTRODUCTION In the course of time several quantities and relations have been put forward in order to describe the texture of a porous medium and the flow of fluid through it. Among these relations the so-called Kozeny formula and a formula for capillary rise, for both of which Carman',' has given a derivation, will be specially considered here. The rules laid down by Peter von Rittinger in his classic Lehrbuch der Aufbereitungskunde (Berlin, 1867, p. 513) concerning the designing of dressing-works still possess authority for such works and their operation. Nevertheless, some modifications and additions suggested by practice may be of value at the present time. Rittinger says: "I. Choose the apparatus and machines which can be, under the existing con-' ditions, easily constructed and kept in running order!' This rule contemplates the construction of apparatus (mostly of wood) on the spot, with the command of good sbops and especially of good workmen in wood. But in many cases, particularly for the sake of a prompt supply, the construction of apparatus is now left to special manufactories, which pay more attention in the choice of materials to durability and strength than to easy manipulation and erection. The comparison of actual energy of comminution with theoretical surface energy presents a wide gap. On the other hand, Solid State Theory presents a viewpoint that places actual energy of breakage in understandable relationship with the theoretical strength of materials. Therefore the physical background of comminution theory favors Kick's Law. A11 discussions of comminution theory appear farfetched when comparison is made of the actual energy of crushing with the energy input called for by thermodynamic theory. Quoting Taggart:' "The work required to crush halite was of the general order of 0.10 kg cm per sq cm of new surface produced (based on air percolation) whereas the theoretical energy of this new surface, based on thermodynamic calculation by a number of investigators is 1 x 10'4 kg cm per sq cm or the work expended was 1000 times the new surface energy — an indicated crushing efficiency of 0.10 pct." It is frustrating to probe into comminution theory with the prospect that the energy one is measuring is 99.9 pct waste energy. Do the laws of comminution deal with energy consumed by mineral breakage or with waste heat energy? There seems to be something wrong. Solid State Theory may provide the answer. The following statement is particularly apt to the situation: "The fundamental fact about metals and indeed all materials, is that they are much weaker than they should be. By this, we mean that if the stress required to cause a given plane of atoms to slip past a neighboring plane is calculated from basic atomic and Solid State Theory, the resulting number is some 1000 times too large to be accounted for by errors in approximations or assumptions. We know now that this is due to dislocations, and we even have a fair understanding of the details of the process by which dislocations make a crystal weak. An intriguing possibility which suggests itself, results from the discovery of very minute metallic crystals which are apparently free of dislocations and which have a strength approaching the ideal value for a perfect crystal." Here we have an extraordinary reversal of the situation. The actual energy for breakage is only one-thousandth the theoretical instead of 1000 times as given by Taggart. But the theoretical energy presented by Solid State Theory is the binding energy between atoms (or ions) in a crystal lattice. This is the kind of energy envisaged by Kick's law. The surface energy or the other hand corresponds to Rittinger's law. Comparison of theoretical with actual, on the basis of surface or on the basis of Rittinger's law, seems to present an absurdity; yet Rittinger's law is confirmed by an impressive array of experimental evidence. Comparison of theoretical and actual on the basis of Solid State Theory or, in other words, on the basis of Kick's law seems reasonable; yet there is not a scrap of evidence to verify Kick's law. The situation appears paradoxical, but the developments in the next section of this paper show that the paradox is a hint to a strange turn of events. ENERGY-WEIGHT FRACTION FUNCTION charles3 has presented a final equation showing the relation of energy consumed in comminution to size of product n{-1) a-n + 1 E is energy, C is proportionality constant, a and n are constants and k is the coarsest size in the ground product (size modulus). In the course of study of a large amount of experimental evidence, Charles discovered that in the general case, a-n + 1 approximated zero. For some reason, a and n differed only by unity. But if a—n + 1 = 0 within experimental error, then it is obvious that Eq. 1 states that it requires an infinite amount of energy to grind any sample to any size. This is a case where nature gives an absurd answer to a man-made mathematical equation, hence something is wrong with the equation. An adjustment must be made to fit the equation with experience. Correlation between Metallography and Mechanical Testing By H F MOORE (Henry Marion Howe Memorial Lecture Trans, vol 120 11,000 words ) The lack of effective correlation between metallography and mechanical testing from the days of Reaumur to the present is noted, and two general problems of such cor¬relation are stated (1) the correlation of qualitative test results with quantitative, and (2) the correlation of average results with maximum or minimum results Some correlation has been achieved, notably in the field of heat-treatment and in the study of elastic strength of metals Correlation is in the process of being developed in several other fields, including the quantitative study of the effect of grain size of metal on mechanical properties, of grain size and type of crystalline structure on the sensitivity of metals to weakening at holes, notches and other "stress raisers," and in the study of the starting phases of spreading, "fatigue" cracks Correlation of mechanical test results and metallographic study is needed in the study of such problems as the various theories of failure of metals, the meaning of and tests for service ductility of metals, and the relative damaging effect of defects inherent in metals, such as minute cracks and segregation, as compared with the damaging effect of "imposed" stress raisers, such as screw threads, sharp shoulders, etc The neces¬sity for more correlation of metallography and mechanical testing during student days is emphasized, and also the need of a better understanding on the part of engi¬neers of the significance and limitations of metallographic apparatus and results and of X-ray diffraction This should be matched by a better understanding on the part of metallurgists of the significance and limitations of mechanical tests of metals, of testing machines and strain-measuring apparatus

GENTLEMEN Like every other significant activity in the United States today, the work of the Institute has been affected by and adjusted to the prosecution of war against Germany, .Japan and their satellites. As the elaborate engines and materiel of modern mobile warfare are made, for the most part, of metals and other minerals; and are powered by mineral fuels, the industries -represented by the A.I.M.E. are of primary and vital importance. Of some 29 critical materials officially listed by the War Production Board, 24 are minerals. An alternate for one of the others, rated as a nonmineral, is to be made principally from petroleum. This alludes, of course, to rubber. The procurement of tremendous quantities of such raw materials and the effective processing, fabrication, and utilization of them depend on members of those branches of the engineering profession represented by the A.I.M.E.

Two processes have been developed for improving the quality of molten-aluminum alloys before casting. The Filtration Process. which involves passing molten metal through a packed bed of granular filter material, is a rapid means of removing finely divided particles. It has the most potential in those instances where removal of inclusions is of primary importance. The Combination Fillration-Inert Gas Fluxing Process inuolzles introduction of an inert gas so that it will diffuse countercurrent to metal flow through the filter bed of granular material. Dissolved hydrogen is removed from the metal in addition to removal of finely divided particles. The Combination Process is most useful where both inclusion removal and attainment of conistently low-hydrogen-content metal are important. Metal treated by the Combination Process is of higher and more uniform quality than heretofore attainable with prolonged chlorine fluxing. Costs of the Combination Process can, for the most part, be offset by savings derived from high recoveries and increased production of superior-quality products. IMPROVEMENT in the quality of molten-aluminum alloys is secured generally through the use of some fluxing practice in a crucible, holding furnace, or ladle involving either gaseous or solid fluxing media. Typical fluxing agents may include the gases nitrogen, argon, or chlorine used either singly or as mixtures and the solids aluminum chloride or hexachloroethane. Regardless of the fluxing means used, the primary objectives are the adequate removal of both metallic and nonmetallic inclusions and reduction of hydrogen content to an acceptably low level. The ultimate goal is to produce ingots and cast products of high quality free from inclusions and porosity. The development of ultrasonics for measurement of internal quality, tightening of quality controls, and the application of the aluminum alloys to new or different commercial fields have been responsible for an ever increasing demand for improvement of quality of both cast and fabricated products. This demand for high quality has not been restricted to any single type of product. On the contrary, the demand encompasses about the entire variety of products including those for fabrication, those to be machined, buffed, or finished for decorative purposes, and those for critical applications where both surface and internal quality is of utmost importance. In many instances products acceptable in the 40's would now be scrapped as unacceptable by these higher present-day standards. With this ever increasing demand for higher quality, it became apparent at Alcoa that conventional means of melt treatment were inadequate in many instances and new approaches were necessary. Consequently the research program was intensified with attention focused on metal treatment during transfer in order to reduce the furnace processing time to a minimum in an effort to attain the desired results at a minimum of additional expense. As a result of this intensive research program which covered numerous variations and adaptations of conventional methods in addition to new methods of melt treatment, several new processes were developed, two of which will be described here. The first of these, a method of melt filtration, was patented in February, 1959.l The second process involving combination filtration—inert gas fluxing was patented in June, 1962. 2 Other melt-treatment processes developed during this period of investigation were patented as listed.3 FILTRATION PROCESS General Description.
