Weight-gain data obtained by nitriding low-carbon sheet steel in an amrnonia CNH,) atmosphere indicated that the process obeyed a parabolic rate law. The calculated actization energy for nitriding in the range 964" to 1268°F agreed reasonably well with published data. At 1358"F, rate data indicated that the activation energy decreased. Weight-gain data obtained by uszng mixtures of NH3 -Nz at 1268°F containzng jrom 10 to 100 zol pct NH3 also obeyed a parabolic rate law. The rate of 'nitriding increased with an increase in the NH3 content of the gas Mixture. It is well-known that steel heated in gas mixtures containing ammonia (NH3) takes up much larger quantities of nitrogen than steel heated in nitrogen, both gases having a total pressure of 1 atm;' this phenomenon can presumably be attributed to the catalytic decomposition of NH3 on the steel surface to furnish nascent (monatomic) nitrogen. This process was studied bv Brunauer. Jefferson, Emmett, and Hend-ricks at furnace temperatures of 752" and 831°F2 using mixtures of NH3 in Hz. Englehardt and wagner3 reported that, at a furnace temperature of 914°F and under their experimental conditions, both nitriding and denitriding were controlled by the rate of gas-metal reactions at a steel surface rather than by the rate of diffusion of nitrogen in iron. The present study was undertaken to obtain information on the kinetics of nitriding low-carbon steel strip at higher temperatures so that practical rates for short-time strip-annealing treatments could be estimated. Variables studied included time: temperature, and NH, content in the annealing atmosphere. Mechanical and chemical characteristics of steel nitrided in this manner will not be considered in the present article. MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL WORK The samples used were from a commercial low-carbon steel, 0.0244 cm thick, in the cold-reduced condition. The chemical composition of this steel is given in Table I. Panels were cut to 5.1 by 17.8 cm, degreased in toluene, and weighed just before treatment. Four specimens were nitrided under each of the experimental conditions. A study was made of the nitriding rate of steel in a 100 vol pct ammonia atmosphere, 740 mm pressure, at five specific temperatures within the range 964" to 1358°F. The nitriding rates of steel in ammonia-nitrogen gas mixtures containing 10, 18, 26, 50, and 100 vol pct ammonia, 740 mm total pressure, at 1268°F were also determined. All atmospheres used were dried by successively passing them through drying towers packed with soda lime and with Linde Molecular sieve Type 4A. Quoted gas compositions refer to those entering the furnace. Specimens were held in the constant-temperature zone of a vertical annealing tube furnace for times of 14, 3, 5, 10, or 15 min. Gas flow rates were maintained at 3.8 cu ft per hr, which was nineteen volume changes per hour for the system used. The rate of flow was selected to provide a high level of free NH3 for cracking on the steel surface where the ammonia gas is most effectively used as a nitriding agent. The vertical annealing tube furnace consisted of a Hevi-Duty tube furnace with a 2 1/2-in.-ID mullite ceramic high-temperature tube. The constant-temperature zone (controlled within 10°F) was about 10 in. long. After each specimen was degreased, a hole was punched in one end, for attaching the specimen by hook to a chain so that it could be lowered into or raised from the high-temperature portion of the tube by means of a power-driven winch. A stainless-steel access port with O-ring seals was connected by suitable glass-to-metal seals to the cool upper portion of the furnace tube. After the weighed specimen was placed in the access port, the furnace tube was evacuated to approximately 10"3 torr, and then the system was flushed thoroughly with the atmosphere under study. When the gas flow rate and constant-temperature zone of the furnace were established, the specimen was lowered into the constant-temperature zone. The atmosphere flowed from the top to the bottom of the vertical furnace tube and was then vented. A recent paper described, by means of stereographic pole figures, the preferred orientations produced by cold-rolling low-carbon steel of automobile-body grade. It was found that the surface of the sheet exhibited a deformation texture significantly different from the texture possessed by the inside of the sheet. Efforts to produce the surface texture by buffing a sample exhibiting the normal or inside texture, using a copper lap, have not been successful. In view of the data collected by Kurdjumow and Sachs2, it was suggested that the surface texture might be the result of partial recrystallization of the normal or inside texture. The recrystallization texture of cold-rolled mild steel was studied by Goss3, but he did not use the pole-figure method, so that his conclusions were in need of verification. For these reasons the work reported in here was undertaken. It had two objectives: (1) to study the general behavior of cold-rolled mild steel on recrystallization below the critical temperature Al, and (2) to attempt experimentally a demonstaration of the genesis suggested above for the surface texture in cold-rolled steel. The material was that used by Gensamer and Mehl, cold-rolled to 97.5 per cent reduction in thickness. Fig. 1 is an X-ray pinhole photo-gram of this material, taken with the beam transmitted perpendicular to the plane of the sheet, using a molybdenum target at 35 kv. with no filter. It is typical of the inside texture, but in it the deformation texture is better developed than in the samples that showed a well developed difference between the inside and surface samples. Specimens from this sheet, which was 0.005 in. thick, were annealed for 5 min. at various temperatures in a lead bath. After about 0.0005 in. had been etched from both surfaces, X-ray photograms were prepared, using the technique described in the earlier paper1. Figs. 2 to 6 are photograms of the annealed sheet, at 566, 571, 577, 580 and 650" C. (1050' to 1202" F.), in order. Fig. 2 shows that 5 min.

ALTHOUGH the American petroleum industry was affected by the Second World War from its early beginning it was not until Dec. 7, 1941- that the industry was placed on full war footing. Even throughout most of 1942 the American overseas operations were limited and not until late in the year did expansion of military activities, more particularly the offensive in North Africa, affect the domestic supplies to such an extent that critical deficiencies developed locally in this country, particularly along the East Coast. The definite outlook for greatly expanded offensive operations by the United States on both Atlantic and Pacific fronts makes certain that during 1943 the domestic situation will. not be alleviated; rather it may become even more critical even though additional transportation facilities, now being built and planned. will be completed from the southwestern producing states to the East Coast.

INTRODUCTION As the world's population expands and nations struggle to better their relative position and standard of living, increased emphasis is being directed to the exploration and production of mineral resources, to the mitigation of natural hazards such as earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, and to geotechnical engineering projects such as high-level nuclear waste disposal, underground military facilities, and transportation tunnels. Several topics are common to all of these endeavors. One is the characterization of the rock mass in situ, including the definition of the initial environment (e.g., temperature, stress, etc.). A second is, depending upon the use of the underground or the desired result, the manner in which the boundary conditions or the environment are to be changed by man. Next, the physicochemical behavior of the rock mass must be measured, or inferred with uncertainty limits placed on this behavior, over the appropriate range of environmental conditions (e.g., temperature, chemistry, etc.) for the application proposed. And last, an appropriate, validated predictive model must be applied to estimate the rock mass response to the perturbation. In the period preceding about 1955, only relatively simple testing of soils and rocks was commonplace, partly because the environment (depth) to which these data were applied was not so extreme as it is at present and partly because less precise predictions of material response were acceptable. Only limited and relatively simple test data seemed to be needed to guide the engineering. At the present time and certainly in the future, as we extend our interaction with the earth's crust to greater depths and impose more extreme perturbations on it, we need a larger body of data, deter- mined under much more complex conditions, in order to make the required predictions. BENEFICIATION of a Korean scheelite ore has been studied during the past year in the Basic Industries Laboratory at Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Co. A flowsheet has been recommended including flotation, gravity separation, and a final cleaning by a magnetic separator. The investigation was continued in the field of flotation in order to establish the effect of certain variables on recovery and grade of rougher concentrates. The results of this investigation are recorded here. Mineralogy The scheelite ore was obtained from Korea and was mined from the Sang Dong deposit. This deposit is described as lying in gently dipping metamorphosed sedimentary beds of Cambrian age.' The metamorphism was probably either metasomatic replacement or recrystallization, or both, with subsequent hydrothermal deposition. Igneous bodies in the form of granite porphyry have been found within 7 km of the main shaft and are considered to be a possible source of the mineralizing solutions. The Myobong formation, the host for the Sang Dong deposit, was laid down in middle Cambrian times and consists of series of mudstone, siltstone, shale, and marl, with local stratification of mica schists, hornfels, and tactites. The scheelite is found in quartz bands in the tactites. Although there are six of these bands, only one, the "main bed" averaging 1.75 pct WOs, has been mined to any extent. The ore sample as received in the laboratory was the product of a cone crusher and was all —2 in. The rock appeared to be even textured, medium to fine grained, and gray green in color. No scheelite could be recognized by the unaided eye. However, under ultraviolet light of 2537 A, the scheelite fluoresced and could be distinguished from the gangue. Under the black light, the scheelite showed no definite vein structure but was disseminated throughout the specimen. The raw ore had a specific gravity of 2.96 and weighed about 125 lb per cu ft at —20-mesh Tyler. The —2-in. material was stage crushed through 20-mesh, and samples were cut for mineralogical, chemical, and spectrochemical analyses. Several polished sections were cut from hand specimens. Figs. 1 and 2 show quartz to be the matrix for scheelite. It was reported by Kim2 that the greatest scheelite concentration in the mine is found with a high concentration of quartz and a decrease in the abundance of garnet. Diameters of scheelite particles ranged from 1.2 mm down to less than 50 microns. Spectrochemical analysis showed the ore to be high in aluminum, bismuth, calcium, iron, magnesium, manganese, silicon, tungsten, and with lesser amounts of beryllium, chromium, lithium, sodium, and titanium. VARIOUS rationalizations of preferred orientations in cold worked polycrystalline metals have been based on the operation of at least two,1 three,2 five,4 an indefinite number,5 and all,6 slip systems of the type occurring in single crystals. Pickus and Mathewson3 suggested that the cold rolling texture in face-centered cubic metals could be rationalized on the basis of two or more operating slip directions symmetrically disposed about the direction of flow in such a manner that the resolved shear stress factor is equal for all operating slip systems and lattice rotations cancel each other. The importance of the direction of flow, † the necessity for the operation of slip systems capable of producing the required, changes in external dimensions, the maintenance of a common surface between adjacent grains and a symmetrical arrangement of the operating slip systems in order to produce an end orientation which is stable under additional deformation lead to the following rationalization of textures based on the type of slip systems operative in single crystals. The rationalization is intended to explain why certain orientations are suitable for deformational flow without a change in orientation and thus are stable end orientations or ideal texture orientations. It does not attempt to explain how the grains of a randomly oriented polycrystalline aggregate will reach this orientation. The rationalization is based on the following four postulates: I. The ideal textures for polycrystalline aggregates are the result of reorientations of individual crystals toward the same stable end orientation at which no further reorientation will occur even during additional deformation. Since, in simple slip, - the relative orientations of the stress axis and the active slip system determine the change in orientation during slip, it is considered that the orientation of the stress axis with respect to the ideal texture determines what slip systems must be active to retain the stable end orientation. Therefore the stable end orientation should be a symmetrical one around the stress axis with respect to the active slip systems such that lattice rotations resulting from slip will cancel each other and prevent a resultant change in orientation. (Rotational symmetry only-not translation, inversion, nor others-is considered here.) Thus a metal under a pure stress should develop a texture consisting of one or more of the crystallographically symmetrical directions, <100>, <110> or <111> for cubic metals or <0001>, <1010> or <1120> for hexagonal dose-packed metals, parallel to the stress axis. 2. VERY little is known of the economical value of the coal-betas of. the State of Texas. The first authentic statement in regard to their occurrence is that contained in the reports of the United States Explorations for the Pacific Railroad, near the 32d parallel of latitude, published in 1853-55. Professor William P. Blake reports, "that a number of seams of bituminous coal, varying, in thickness from two to four feet, have been opened along the Brazos River, in Young County, about one hundred and fifty miles west of Fort North." Dr: Shumard also states, "that the characteristic fossil forms of the Carboniferous Era have been found with this coal, and considers the ago of the formation established. Fossils obtained from the carboniferous limestone remove all doubt of the age of these deposits."† In the spring of 1879, I was called upon by. some Eastern capitalists to make an examination of the Brazos coal-field, in order to obtain the thickness, extent, and value of the coal which could be mined and be- made merchantable for steam, heating, and metallurgical purposes. The demand for coal in this section of the country is great, and a fuel. which in our Eastern markets might be considered of inferior quality, would here find a ready sale. It must be remembered that the market value of a coal does not depend upon its absolute purity, but upon its actual value in heat units which it is capable of producing. A poor coal which can be cheaply mined near the: consumer, is infinitely more remunerative to a mining company than a superior coal whose cost to the consumer is greatly increased by high mining charges and railroad freights. The value of the Texan coals does not depend upon their purity but upon their low first cost and nearness to a market. A glance at a geological map of the United States, will show that the Brazos coal-field is the extreme southwestern extension of what may be called the Missourian, Fourth or Western, bituminous coal * I am permitted by the gentlemen for whom the examination was made to publish the general statements contained in this paper. † Macfarlane&apos;s Coal Regions of America. More recently brief mention has been made of the coal-field in the pamphlets of the State geological survey. These reports are, however, too general, too indefinite, and too impracticable to permit of any conclusions as to the value of the coal as an economical, merchantable fuel.

An evident connection exists between chemical and calorific phenomena: the most important, of our sources of heat, the combustion of coal, is nothing else than a chemical reaction. Not satisfied with this indefinite statement, investigators have attempted to establish a more precise correlation between these two orders of phenomena, and have questioned whether there be not a necessary connection between the possibility of a chemical reaction and the algebraic sign of the quantity of heat which it would call into play (i.e., liberate or absorb). This question possesses the highest interest for metallurgical chemists. But the study of it by experimental methods only could not completely elucidate it. To arrive at a definite solution, it was necessary to appeal to a science much more general than chemistry,—namely, that of energetics, which embraces all the physical sciences. We can place absolute confidence in its conclusions, because they rest upon a proposition which can scarcely be denied, namely, the impossibility of The main facts in the history of the development o‡ this field of Triassic coals have been already set before the Institute in the papers of Mr. Oswald J. Heinrich, a former member of the Institute and the superintendent of the mines at Midlothian. † From these and other references to the field, it appears that coal was known to exist here as early as 1701; for on the 10th of May that year Colonel Byrd reported to the Colonial Council of Virginia the discovery of coal. Coal was mined from 1770 to 1780; but the amount shipped is unknown. It was much used in Richmond at this early date for gratefires. In 1789 shipments were made to northern ports. During the first half of the century just passed, mining operations attained in this field their greatest development, the number and extent of the collieries and the tonnage of coal raised per annum being greater for that period than for any similar period since. The maximum annual output exceeded 100,000 tons, while in two years only since the Civil War has the amount of coal raised exceeded 50,000 tons. This field covers about 150 sq. in. Its outline and the position of the strata in which the coal-outcrops occur are shown on the accompanying map, reproduced from the latest survey by the U. S. Geological Survey. Mining has been carried on along the margins of the area, often in the primitive manner in vogue at the beginning of operations, by means of shafts and slopes, usually too small in cross-section to permit the proper working of the beds. The distribution of displacements of originally plane surfaces by an invariant-plane strain has been analyzed statistically. The displacement ratio (the magnitude of the displacement of a point originally a unit distance from the invariant plane) can be determined from an analysis either of tilts of random surfaces or of displacements of random scratches scribed on a randowz surface. In either case the mean of the tangent of the observed displacement angle is related to the displacement ratio, and the number of observations used in determining the mean is related to the confidence limits placed on the estimate of the displacement ratio. In estimating the effect of applied stress on a phase transformation whose displacement effects can be approximated as an invariant-plane strain,* the dis- placement ratio of the invariant-plane strain is of primary importance. Two procedures for determining such displacement ratios are considered here. In the tilt method the measured quantity is taken to be the angle through which a random polish plane is rotated by the invariant-plane strain. In the scratch method the measured quantity is taken to be the angle between the original direction of a random scratch in a random polish plane and the projection of its final direction in the polish plane. In order to obtain precise results from either of the methods, it is necessary to measure the relative volume change associated with the strain in a separate experiment. TILT METHOD A locally homogeneous invariant-plane strain, P, with displacement ratio, S, may be written&apos; where ; and < are unit vectors indicating the displacement direction and invariant-plane normal, respectively, as pictured in Fig. 1. Eq. [I] describes a uniaxial strain if the direction of displacement is parallel to the invariant-plane normal and a pure shear strain if the displacement direction is perpendicular to the invariant-plane normal. The original orientation of the random polish plane relative to the invariant plane and to the displacement direction is shown in Fig. 2. An isothermal calorimeter suitable for measurements of heats of solution in liquid tin as solvent is described. Measurements of the heats of solution of gold, silver, copper, and a gold-silver alloy are reported. The heat of formation of this gold-silver alloy is also reported. HEATS of solution in liquids can be determined directly, but few such data have been published for metals as solvents. Knowledge of heats of solution is desirable because it contributes to the general understanding of energy relations in metallic solutions. Thermochemical measurements of this type also furnish answers to specific problems: For example, from the heats of solution of an alloy and of a mixture of its constituent elements in a given solvent, the heat of formation of the alloy may be found. Similarly, differences in the energy content of samples of the same metal in two different states, such as the annealed and cold worked states, may be determined. In the work reported here, gold, silver, and an alloy of gold and silver were dissolved in liquid tin at 240°C and gold, silver, and copper were dissolved in tin at 300 °C. The experiments yielded the heats of solution of these metals in tin. The heat of formation of the gold-silver alloy was also determined. The same calorimetric method is being used to measure the energy stored in metals during cold working and preliminary results have been published.&apos; Equipment and Experimental Procedure The isothermal calorimeter used in this work, Fig. 1, consisted of a Dewar flask completely immersed in a constant-temperature salt bath. A long neck provided space for thermocouple leads and a stirrer shaft and permitted the injection of solute samples. The metal bath in the calorimeter flask was stirred at about 100 rpm by a small glass impeller driven by a constant-speed motor. The shaft of the stirrer passed through a Wilson vacuum seal.2 All measurements were made under vacuum in order to eliminate temperature disturbances resulting from gas convection and to prevent the oxidation of tin. The calorimeter flask was joined by an all-glass connecting line to a gas-control system which made possible the use of a protective atmosphere of deoxidized and dried hydrogen. At the operating temperature of the calorimeter tin oxide was not reduced by hydrogen, presumably because the reaction rate was too slow. Part of the closed system was a removable side tube through which the solute sample could be introduced and in which it was held at a temperature of 0°C prior to injection into the metal bath. WHEN annealed carbon, or low-alloy, steels are suitably heated the ferrite (alpha iron solid solution) and the carbide, of which they are composed, react together to form a single solid solution of carbon (and other elements) in gamma iron (austenite). This reaction may begin only at a certain minimum temperature called the eutectoid temperature. The first ferrite and carbide thus to react together do so in definite proportions known as the eutectoid composition. With further heating the original constituent that is present in excess is dissolved in the austenite until exhausted. Whether the excess constituent be ferrite (hypoeutectoid steels) or carbide (hypereutectoid steels) the procedure is much the same, and upon slow cooling the homogeneous austenite expels the excess of either (proeutectoid ferrite or carbide) until the eutectoid composition is reached. Thus the reaction upon heating is strictly reversed upon cooling and accordingly an equilibrium diagram of this process may be constructed. Such an equilibrium diagram concerns itself only with the tempera¬tures involved and with the proportions and compositions of the phases developed under conditions that suffice to permit equilibrium. Specifically it has no concern for the type or mode of distribution of these constituents nor with any extra-equilibrium conditions such as undercooling, which is almost universally encountered in metals. Actually, however, of great importance is the sluggishness toward equilibration caused by the not inconsiderable time involved in diffusion. Thus instead of the theoretical transformation point AE, we find for a certain rate of heating or cooling the use of the designations Ar and Ac (transformation temperature found on cooling and upon heating). These figures obviously have no particular meaning except as measured and expressed for a definite heating or cooling rate, and represent the apparent temperature displacement caused by an inadequate time allowance. The side-blown converter has been investigated as a possible commercial process for the production of low nitrogen steel. During this work, two converters of 3-ton and 22-ton capacity were operated on a pilot plant basis for a total of 214 heats. The steel made in these converters was low in nitrogen and possessed good cold working properties. Some problems of converter operation remain to be solved. IN plants operating with a high iron capacity, sev-eral different refining methods are used in the conversion of the molten pig iron to steel. These include various ore practices in stationary and tilting open-hearths, the duplex process employing the Bessemer converter and open-hearth, and the Bessemer process. At J&L, a considerable part of the iron produced is handled by the Bessemer process, either alone or in conjunction with duplexing, and therefore an appreciable portion of the steelmaking research effort has centered about the method. This paper covers research work on the development of the side-blow converter for the commercial production of low nitrogen ingots and includes descriptions of the operation of a 3-ton and a 22-ton experimental converter at the Aliquippa Works. The refining of iron to produce steel requires the removal of a large portion of the carbon and silicon and the control of manganese, phosphorus and sulphur which are present in the iron in varying amounts. The first large-scale means of refining iron was the acid Bessemer process which was brought into use almost 100 yr ago. This method, using compressed air as the refining medium, accomplishes substantially complete removal of carbon, manganese and silicon. Phosphorus and sulphur are not affected but, by choice of an iron composition sufficiently low in these elements, a commercial product can be produced. Since the process will handle large tonnages rapidly, operates without external fuel and with a minimum of additional equipment, it quickly became the major tool in the early expansion of the steel industry. Later, the basic open-hearth process, by affording control of phosphorus and sulphur and by consuming the large quantities of steel scrap that were becoming available, forced the acid Bessemer process into a secondary position in the industry. During the past two decades the demand for steel to be used in cold forming and drawing operations has gradually increased. Bessemer steel, because of its work hardening and aging characteristics, is not as suitable for these applications as basic open-hearth steel, consequently the decline of the process was accelerated. More recently, because of changing economic conditions, this long range trend appears to have been arrested or perhaps reversed. Ingot production data for recent years furnishes only an incomplete picture of the importance of the converter in the American steel industry; open-hearth furnaces utilize large tonnages of blown metal for which no published statistics are available. Metallurgical Aspects The fundamental difference between Bessemer and open-hearth steels apparently lies not in the method of manufacture but, rather, in the differences in chemical composition of the two steels. It is further believed that the principal features distinguishing Bessemer from open-hearth steel are the higher nitrogen and phosphorus contents of the former. Evidence supporting this position is supplied by tests on laboratory induction furnace heats that were made to contain varying amounts of phosphorus and nitrogen but were otherwise similar to normal low carbon silicon-killed steels. Fig. 1, 2 and 3, summarizing the test results, are taken from G. H. Enzian&apos;s paper titled, "Some Effects of Phosphorus and Nitrogen on the Properties of Low Carbon Steels."&apos; Fig. l indicates that phosphorus has a marked effect on the cold work embrittlement of steel as shown by the work brittleness test of Graham and Work.&apos; In the low nitrogen steels, which as a group have the better cold working properties, the effect of phosphorus variations is the more pronounced.

K ENTUCKY&apos;S first acid-grade fluorspar flotation Kmill, shown in Fig. 1, was placed in operation Aug. 1, 1952, by the Pennsylvania Salt Manufacturing Co. at Mexico, Ky. During 1951 a critical shortage of acid-grade fluorspar developed and it became necessary for the company to produce part of its fluorspar requirements. In 1951 the company purchased the Crider and Lennen metallurgical fluorspar mill and an adjacent stockpile of tailing at Mexico, Ky. The tailing, assaying about 26 pct calcium fluoride, originated from log washer and jig mill concentrators in the area. As the mill did not have a fluorspar dryer or convenient rail facilities, the company leased the Burleson concentrator at Marion, Ky., where these facilities were available. At Marion, Ky., on the Illinois Central Railroad, dry acid-grade fluorspar is transported direct to the company&apos;s Calvert City, Ky., hydrofluoric acid plant. The Mexico flotation plant was reconditioned and designed to produce acid-grade fluorspar from the jig tailing stockpile. The new plant flowsheet is shown in Fig. 2. The ore feed, old tailing, which contains 10 pct of waste rock and coarse gravel assaying approximately 8 pct CaF,, is bound together by sticky clay

IN a recent technical paper of the Central Committee of the French Coal Mines (Note technique No. 198, by L. Lahoussay) the author points out that continuous in¬crease in depth of mine shafts makes it more and more necessary to look for appropriate means to reduce the weights and dimensions of the hoisting ropes. Increasing depth demands a larger section and weight for the cable if the useful load is not to be cut down at the same time. This naturally leads to increased cost per ton, and at the same time creates serious mechanical difficulties. The dimensions of the hoisting engine must be increased, acceleration at the start must be decreased so as to avoid periods of excessive peak power loads, and a longer time be allowed to slow down the speed of the hoist when applying brakes. The hoisting rope, upon which depend the dimensions and hence the mass of the hoisting engine, presents the greatest obstacle to the development of hoisting from greater depths. Evidently, for a given depth, the total weight of the rope can be notably reduced by utilizing a wire rope of decreasing section, approaching the theoretical logarithmic form. This is a solution frequently adopted for great depths. Of course, the weight of the rope could be easily&apos; diminished by reducing the useful load, but it is certain that with increasing depth of mining, more effort must be made to confine the hoisting to a small number of shafts, and increase the load hoisted per trip.

INTRODUCTION The production of coal is a major part of the mining industry. In recent years the production of clean coal has exceeded 600 million tons per year and is reported to have reached 660 million tons in 1977. Some data on the magnitude and utilization for the year 1975 is given in Table I. In that year 648 million tons of soft coal were produced and of this 267 million tons or 41% approximately was produced by mechanical cleaning. Of the 374 million tons of raw coal sent to the preparation plant, 28.6% or 107 million tons was discarded as refuse. In the same year approximately 6 million tons of anthracite were produced and nearly all of this was cleaned. Table I also gives coal utilization statistics for 1975. Excluding the approximately 20% that goes to the coke ovens or to export, the vast bulk of our production is used for steam power generation and a lesser amount for captive production of industrial power and process steam. While much of the nation&apos;s coal (e.g. strip mined western, sub-bituminous coal) may be removed from the ground in relatively pure form by modest selective mining techniques, other coal requires preparation in order to remove ash and sulfur constituents and produce an acceptable steam or coking coal. Preparation is often a valuable adjunct to mining in that rather non-selective, low cost, bulk mining techniques may be used underground while the preparation plant is used to reject refuse at low cost above ground. The principal reason for the use of coal preparation is to convert raw coal into an acceptable commercial product by removing the high ash and high sulfur refuse material.

Although the term "spalling" has long been known, Norton l first referred to its usage for the fracture or disintegration of materials subjected to rapid temperature changes. Spalling of ceramic materials at high temperatures has received attention in the past. Removal of the char formed during ablation in re-entry of space vehicles has been referred to as mechanical spalling. The first experiments to evaluate the process of rock fragmentation by thermal spalling were conducted by Stoces using a series of gasoline burners on the quartz veins of the Zinnwald deep mines in Germany. After the development of rocket-jet burners, the principles of &apos;thermal spalling combined with high fluid momentum found wide practical application in rocks. The well-known jet piercing process for drilling blastholes in taconite and for jet channeling in the quarrying of granite are among the more notable of these application^.

Oil and gas activities in Indiana during 1943 continued to decline at about the same rate as in 1942. New development, production, and prospecting, all showed the results of Federal regulation, low price for crude oil and shortages of labor and materials. Several local stripper-well operations were shut down, but no large-scale abandonment has occurred as yet. During the year, 277 holes were drilled for oil and/or gas, of which 99 were completed as oil wells, 19 as gas wells and 159 as dry holes. This record was a decline of 21 per cent over last year in the total number of completed tests, 20 per cent in the number of oil wells and 9.5 per cent in the number of gas wells. As in the previous year, most of the drilling (82 per cent) was in the southwestern part of the state, Gibson County ranking first, with 77 completions and 49 oil wells. Posey County was second, with 59 completions and 20 oil wells. The remaining 18 per cent of the drilling was in the old Trenton oil and gas area. The total footage drilled during the year was 482,799 ft., a decline of 18 per cent from the previous year. Of this, 146,559 ft. was wildcat footage. The total initial production of the oil wells completed was 6362 bbl. and of the gas wells was 2,562,000 cu. feet. Three tests in the old Trenton area were drilled into the Cambrian and reported nothing more than tar residue. A Devonian test was to be made in the Griffin field in the Wabash River but owing to the delay caused by Federal restrictions this test did not get started in 1943. It is expected to spud in March 1944. The new discoveries in 1943 were virtually all in the southwestern part of the state, and all, so far, one-well pools, except the North Owensville pool, in Gibson County. The latter was brought in during the month of February and by the end of the year nine wells were producing in the pool, with a reported initial yield of 1260 bbl. per day. By the end of the year it had a daily average production of 401 bbl. and an accumulated production of 39,129 bbl. The average gravity of the oil is reported to be 35.6. On the Ohio-Indiana state line, early in 1943, a new pool was opened up in the old Trenton area. The discovery well was on the Ohio side of the line. An offset well was completed on the Indiana side, with an initial yield of 64 bbl., and settled down to 5 bbl. per day. This well produced 1154 bbl. up to Dec. 31, 1943. There was no further development here, because of the Federal Conservation Order M-68, restricting drilling to one well on 40 acres. The development pattern usually followed in this area is one well to 5 acres. The E. Rogers field was extended by one pool (Table 4). Most of the development in the oil-field pools during the year took place in the Kirksville pool, in Gibson County, and the Caborn pool, in Posey County. The crude-oil production in 1943 was approximately 5,273,000 bbl., a decline of 29 per cent from the previous year. The Griffin field, of Gibson and Posey Counties,

The purpose of this discussion is to comment briefly on one of the points raised in the paper. The topic is that referred to in the Conclusion 2, in which the authors note a "disproportionate increase in mixing rate" as they proceed from a displacement performed at viscosity ratio 0.998 to one at 1.002. The recovery curve of this displacement, Fig.2A, shows a quite noticeable difference between the two runs in which displaced and displacing liquids were interchanged. This difference is ascribed by the authors to the change in viscosity ratio between the two experiments. This interpretation of the experimental results must certainly be based on rather precise measurements of the fluid viscosities or, at least, of the ratio of their viscosities. The ordinary Ostwald viscometer, employed in the usual way, is only just able to distinguish between liquids whose viscosities differ by two or three parts per thousand. The experimental refinements which then must have been necessary to measure with any precision a viscosity ratio of 1.002 would be worthy of mention. Indeed, one would have expected the authors to devote at least a paragraph to the display of this technique. For the same reason - to emphasize that the details of such unusually critical experimental work should be reported and discussed in the literature — I would have liked to see some comment by the authors on the requirements for temperature control during both the viscosity measurements and the displacement experiments. The temperature coefficient of viscosity of Soltrol C at room temperature has been measured in this laboratory at about - 1.9%/1°C. How much did the coefficients for the fluid mixtures used in the experiment differ from this and from each other Even if the two fluids were identical in this respect, it would appear that a temperature difference of .l°C between them in the flow system would produce a viscosity con- trast equal to that imposed by their composition. Reference to the experimental solutions of these problems would render Conclusion 2 more credible. Published theoretical work on the stability problem contains no indication of such extreme sensitivity to the viscosity ratio in the immediate neighborhood of unity. On the contrary, perturbation calculations such as those made by Chuoke1 and Perrine2 lead to initial finger growth rates proportional to the first power of the viscosity difference. The later instability growth calculated by Scheidegger,3 using the assumption of zero pressure gradient perpendicular to the average flow, is also simply proportional to the viscosity difference. The conflict regarding the sensitivity of the dependence of instability growth or mixing rate on the viscosity contrast needs explicit recognition in the literature. In particular, it would seem that the experimental work reported here should be supported by a more detailed description of the viscosity controls. Further discussion of possible alternative interpretations of the data would also be in order. For instance, is it possible that the unconsolidstted bead pack used changed its characteristics between the runs (due, perhaps, to the handling and inverting involved in the injection of the front) Or, are the data points of Fig. 2A averages from several runs performed in a series in which the two liquids alternated as displaced and displacing fluids? To summarize, it seems to me that the relationship asserted by Conclusion 2 in the paper needs the support of more detailed experimental evidence. REFERENCES 1. Chouke, R.
