The elimination of metalloids in the open-hearth process depends on oxidation of the metal by diffusion of FeO from the slag (or absorption of FeO by the metal), with subsequent reaction between dissolved iron oxide and the metalloids carbon, manganese, phosphoms, and silicon. During an investigation on deoxidation with silicon, data on rate of oxidation of the metal were obtained, and these combined with certain other information, are presented here in an attempt to show the fundamental principles governing the diffusion of FeO from slag to metal. Inasmuch as the aim of the investigation was not a study of diffusion, certain data are lacking and it has been necessary to make assumptions on metal viscosity and effect of temperature on diffusion. These factors are known to exert a considerable effect on diffusional processes. Overoxidation, or supersaturation of the metal with iron oxide, is not taken up in this paper. Overoxidation has little effect on diffusion except under a few special conditions, and the discussion has therefore been limited to diffusional processes. Though the results given in this paper should be regarded as preliminary, certain of the conclusions drawn are definitely applicable to any steelmaking process. Previous Study of Absorption An extensive study of absorption has been made by the Department of Chemical Engineering, Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The results are of such direct interest in the problem of slag-metal reactions that it is feIt worth while to summarize them here. COMPAÑIA Minera de Peñoles, S. A., at its Avalos unit operates a lead-zinc concentrator having a capacity of about 600 short tons per day. Lead and zinc concentrates are made by flotation methods. The concentrator is at Terminal de Providencia, in the state of Zacatecas, some 70 miles south of Saltillo, Coahuila. The Peñoles-Avalos railroad operating between the plant and Estacion Avalos, a distance of 6 miles, makes connections with the Coahuila and Zacatecas railroad, which in turn connects with the Nacionales de Mexico at Saltillo. The three railroads are each of different gauge, requiring the transfer of all supplies and concentrates at each junction. The mill operates on company ores, on ores from leased mines, and as a custom mill. The custom business is very small. The lead concentrates are shipped to company smelters at Monterrey, Nuevo Leon and Torreón, Coahuila. Since the European war, all zinc concentrates have been shipped to the United States. ORE TREATED The major source of ore supply is a group of four mines owned or leased by the company, some three miles south of the mill in the mountains, from which the ore is delivered to the mill by a gravity aerial tramway. Custom ore comes in by rail. The ores occur in chimneys. The upper levels contained oxidized siliceous ores of lead, copper, silver and gold, with varying amounts of zinc. These ores were direct-smelted. In the first two years of operation a good deal of the tailing loss was caused by the oxidized content of the ores milled. Much of the ore in the transition zones between the oxides and sulphides was not mined. The ores now being milled are clean, hard sulphides in a limestone gangue, with only occasional contamination of oxides. The lead and zinc sulphides are of coarse structure and are freed even above flotation sizes. The galena is usually "steel" colored, easily and quickly floated. When there is any oxidation, it is usually on the coarsest crystals. The zinc minerals vary a good deal in color; a resin sphalerite predominates but there are varying shades of brown marmatites. On an average, the zinc sulphides contain 64 per cent zinc. The only common copper mineral is chalcopyrite. Little is known of the occurrence of gold and silver. Waste minerals are mainly limestone and pyrite, both of which are barren. The ores vary from 20 to 35 per cent pyrite. In the summer of 1909 the Boston & Montana reduction department of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. completed a new flue system, at a cost of about $1,100,000, and as this includes the largest and highest chimney in the world, and some new features of flue construction, a description will be of interest. At the Spokane meeting of the Institute in September, 1909, a brief mention was made of this flue system, in discussing Mr. Brunton's presidential paper on the Progress of Metallurgy in the West, and a promise was given that when a long enough time had elapsed, so that operating results could be given, a paper would be offered. The smelting plant includes blast furnaces, MacDougall roasters, gas-fired reverberatories, and converters.

The species responsible for flotation when xanthate is added as collector for pyrite is dixanthogen. Measured oxidation potentials of these systems show that xanthate should be oxidized to dixanthogen, and the presence of dixanthogen on the pyrite surface is confirmed by infrared absorption. Zeta potential measurements are presented and related to collector adsorption. In spite of the normal presence of pyrite in most sulfide ore deposits, only a modest amount of study has been devoted to the xanthate-pyrite flotation system in the absence of activators and depressant~.'-~ As a result, little is known about the mechanism of xanthate adsorption on pyrite. From the few studies that have been made, however, a number of significant observations have been forthcoming. For example, the dependence of flotation response on the state of oxidation of the surface was noted in two studies — one conducted by Plante and Sutherland4 and a later one by plaksin.~ In another study, Gaudin and wilkinson3 found that ferric xanthate was not present on a pyrite surface. In a later investigation, however, Gaudin' and his colleagues did extract a small amount of ferric xanthate into benzene when pyrite was ground in an evacuated mill with water, benzene, and xanthate. (communication to the Secretary): When, at the New Pork meeting, February, 1899, Mr. Douglas gave an abstract of his highly interesting paper on the Copper Queen mine, he invited the members of the Institute, in his usual progressive spirit, to make a full scientific investigation of the region of that mine during the prospective excursion to Bisbee, Arizona. I volunteered to examine some of the metallurgical processes and products of the works, and obtained from Mr. Douglas a valuable series of samples. Upon the issue of his paper, however, I found that he had already a considerable volume of analyses of those products, and that little was left for me to do in that respect, except to duplicate his results, the importance of which work would not have been commensurate to the time and labor involved. I selected, therefore, only some points which he had not made entirely clear, or concerning which I was skeptical. The details of most of my work will appear in a future paper. Small MnS inclusions with known crystallographic orientations were placed inside powder compacts of low-carbon steel. After the metal was axially campressed with negligible end friction, the deformstions for the metal and the inclusions were compared. The MnS inclusions deformed more when the [100] direction was aligned with the compression axis than when the [111] direction was parallel to this axis. The deformations of the inclusions in the two principal radial directions were equal for each of the above orientations. Inclusions with [110] compression alignments did not deform with radial symmetry. The relative deformation of the inclusion and metal was closely dependent upon the relatiue hardness of the two phases. The relative deformation of the two phases was not sensitive to the rate of deformation. RECENT studies by the authors1.&apos; suggested that the plastic deformation of MnS in steel would probably be highly sensitive to the orientation of the inclusions and to the temperature of the metal. This paper reports an investigation of these factors upon MnS behavior within steel. Manganese sulfide (MnS) possesses an NaCl-type structure and typically has extensive (l10) {110} slip as a separate (noninclusion) crystal.&apos; A secondary slip system, ( l 10) { l l l}, has also been observed where the major slip system is restricted. In general, MnS inclusions must be rated as a highly deformable second phase.3 The amount of sulfide deformation varies, however, with several composition and processing factors. Some of these have been only partially assigned. For example, it is known that minor amounts (<0.01 pct) of silicon within free-machining steels will increase the amount of MnS deformation,4 but the mechanism of the added deformation can only be surmised at the present. Manganese sulfide and steel have sufficiently comparable deformation characteristics so that slip which is started in steel may be continued through the sulfide inclusions and back into the steel if the crystal orientations are favorable.5 A more detailed discussion of previous work on the plastic deformation of NaC1-type crystals and on the plastic deformation of inclusions within a metal is given in Chao&apos;s work.6 EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The manganese sulfide which was used in this study was prepared by previously described methods.&apos; Single crystals of MnS, both as cleavage cubes and as spheres, were oriented within steel powder compacts so that the desired crystal directions were parallel to the direction of axial compression. A four-stage hydrostatic compaction procedure was used and involved the following steps. In the first stage part of the powder was placed in a metal die 1 in. in diameter with a thick (1 in. OD, 5/8 in. ID) rubber liner which had one end plugged. The steel powder was hand-rammed, making it as dense as possible before placing a carefully sized MnS crystal (either as a sphere or as a cube) near the center. The crystal was oriented with the chosen direction vertical; viz., [001], [011], or [111], with the aid of a X10 microscope. A pair of tungsten wire threads 0.020 in. in diameter was inserted along the side of this (&apos;core compact" to locate the desired plane after the compression tests. After the crystal was positioned in the center of the die, more powder was added and carefully rammed by hand. The die was then capped with a rubber plug of the same hardness and thickness as that of the liner. The whole assembly as shown in Fig. 1 was compacted by a ram load of 54,000 lb (about 70,000 psi). In the second stage a smaller, 3/4-in, rubber-lined die was used to give a stress of approximately 120,000 psi. The above process was repeated with the initial compact serving as a core for a larger compact. The final product after sintering was a cylinder 1 cm long and 1 cm in diameter, having a density of 7.54 g per cu cm. This was close to the theoretical density since the metal contained a non-metallic phase. There was no evidence of MnS deformation during the hydrostatic compaction or subsequent sintering. Elevated-temperature hardness data were obtained by procedures previously described.2 Compression tests for inclusion deformation utilized the cylinders which were described above. TAX TREATMENT OF EXPLORATION AND DEVELOPMENT EXPENSES Exploration Expenditures General Principles. Exploration expenditures are expenses incurred within the United States or the Outer Continental Shelf for the purpose of ascertaining the existence, location, extent or quality of any deposit of ore or other mineral. Section 617 of the Internal Revenue Code permits a taxpayer to elect to deduct these expenditures currently. In default of election, exploration expenditures must be capitalized and included in the basis of the mineral property for purposes of determining cost depletion. Entitlement to Deduction. In order to qualify for current deduction, exploration expenditures must be incurred prior to the commencement of the development stage, i.e., when mineral deposits are shown to exist in sufficient quantity and quality to reasonably justify commercial exploitation. Generally, expenditures for geological and geophysical investigations, reconnaissance, surveying, testpitting, trenching, drilling, driving of exploration tunnels and adits and similar types of work constitute exploration expenditures if incurred prior to the commencement of development. However, expenditures to further delineate the extent and location of an existing commercially marketable deposit are not exploration expenditures. Exploration expenditures may be incurred from within a producing mine to ascertain the existence of what appears to be a different ore deposit. Expenditures for property which is subject to an allowance for depreciation are not deductible under §617. However, depreciation properly allowable on assets used in exploration is an exploration expenditure. Election to Deduct Exploration Expenditures. The election to deduct exploration expenditures is made by deducting these expenditures in the return for the first taxable year for which such treatment is desired. The election applies to all properties of the taxpayer. Once the election is made all exploration expenditures, in the year of election and thereafter, must be deducted, unless the election is revoked with the prior consent of the Commissioner. The Tax Equity and Fiscal Responsibility Act of 1982 (TEFRA) made substantial changes in the treatment of exploration expenditures. For exploration expenses incurred after 1982 and before 1984 by a corporation, the amount currently deductible is limited to 85% of the expenditure. The remaining 15% must be capitalized and recovered over a five-year period. Although exploration costs capitalized under this provision are not part of the basis of the property for cost depletion purposes, investment credit may be claimed with respect to these expenditures. Further changes have been added by the Tax Reform Act of 1984 with respect to expenditures made after 1984. The Act reduces the amount of otherwise currently deductible costs from 85% to 80%. Additionally, it limits the availability of the investment credit for capitalized mineral exploration costs to deposits located in the United States. TEFRA also allows individuals a special method of recovery under which exploration expenditures may, at the election of the taxpayer, be amortized ratably over a 10-year period beginning with the year in which the costs are paid or incurred. If taxpayer does not use this method, the excess of the exploration expenditures actually deducted over the amount that would have been deducted if 10 year amortization had been elected is an item of tax preference subject to the alternative minimum tax.

Equilibrium vaporization ratios were obtained for light hydrocarbons, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen sulfide in a reservoir fluid containing 35 mole per cent hydrogen sulfide. The data cover the range from 700 to 2500 psia at 154°F. The results of this study are compared with results obtained by other investigators on systems containing less hydrogen sulfide. When large amounts of hydrogen sulfide are present, the equilibrium vaporization ratios for ethane and heavier hydrocarbons are greater than the ratios for systems containing little or no hydrogen sulfide. Large amounts of hydrogen sulfide have the reverse effect on the ratios for methane. Routine PVT studies were performed on the reservoir fluid including flash and differential liberations of the dissolved gas. The pressure-volume relationships of the saturated fluid were also determined. It is shown that the use of published correlations on physical properties of reservoir .fluids can lead to gross errors when applied to systems containing large amounts of hydrogen sulfide. INTRODUCTION Equilibrium vaporization ratios for various components in naturally occurring crude oil and condensate systems have been reported in the literature.1,2,3,4 Recently, several papers have been published with emphasis on non-hydrocarbon components such as nitro- gen, carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide.5,6,7,8,9 The increased discovery of reservoir fluids having high concentrations of these non-hydrocarbon components, particularly hydrogen sulfide, has created a need for a further study of their phase behavior. Equilibrium vaporization ratios are known to vary with pressure, temperature, and overall composition of the system.&apos;" It was anticipated that ratios for systems containing large amounts of hydrogen sulfide would differ from the ratios for systems containing small amounts of hydrogen sulfide. Therefore, the present work was undertaken in order to obtain reliable equilibrium vaporization ratios for the reservoir-fluid in question. PROCEDURE The procedure followed was evolved after considerable experimentation on methods of handling the very sour crude. It was found that drying agents (e.g. CaCl2 and CaSO4) absorbed an appreciable amount of hydrogen sulfide from the gas used to prepare the recombined samples. The concentration of hydrogen sulfide dropped as much as 10 mole per cent in a single pass through a 3-ft drying tube. It was also found that when undried gas was agitated with mercury in the PVT cell, a black scum, believed to be mercuric sulfide, was formed and the hydrogen sulfide content of the gas dropped several mole per cent. Because composition changes during a run could not be tolerated, separation of the mercury and sour fluid was necessary. In order to effect this separation, a stainless steel piston, equipped with Teflon O-rings, was placed in the PVT cell between the mercury and the sour fluid. A theoretical and experimental ana1ysis is given of the change in volume of a porous medium due to changes in external and internal pressures. The result enable one to deduce directly the effect of large increlents in stresses. It is shown that the three-dimensional representation of the volume of a nonlinear porous system is a cylindrical rules surface, the generating lines of Which have a slope according to the solid rock compressibility. Analytical expression for such a ,surface is very simple. It follows that the bulk and pore compressihilities depend only on the difference between pore fluid and external hydrostatic pressure, i.e., the effective rock frame pressure. From measurements on a number of sandstones as well as limestones it can be conduded that for practical values of this effective frame pressure the pore compressibility falls in the range between the compressibility of water and that of undersaturated crude oil. In general, pore compressibility is found to be higher the lower the porosity. For a particular limestone reservoir pore compressibility and porosity could he related by means of a simple empirical formula. Results from the described study find a direct applicxtion in material balance calculations and in prob1ems of liquid flow through porous media. Since the elastic constants of the rock bulk material enter into equatiorls for velocity of acoustic waves, the results are also of importance for calculating rates of wave propagation in these media. It is shown for sandstones with 1.5 to -10 prr cent porosity that laboratory measured porosities may differ from those lender reservoir conditions by about I per cent of their value. The difference for low porosity limestotnes can be of the order of 10 per cent. The subsidence caused by elastic deformation of reservoir rock is shown to he very small. General formulas relating pore and bulk volume to external and internal pressure can be derived, as has been shown by Biot1, Gassmann2 and Geertsma.2 Their theories describe the differential change in volume caused by a variation in pore fluid tension and external hydrostatic tension. It has been known for a long timei that the stress-strain relations of a packing of spheres are essentially noninear. Our experiments show that for almost all reservoir rocks which arc elastically deformable the relation between volume and loading is also a nonlinear one, resembling that of a packing of spheres very closely. The behavior of these media is often described by using the linear stress-strain relations for small incremental stresses and strains in the vicinity of a pre-stressed condition." The present study differs from these considerations in that it enables one to deduce the effect of large increments in the stresses directly. In analogy to the stress tensor for a homogeneous body the stress tensor for a porous body can be written in the conventional way: where the tensor components, o, and t, represent the total forces acting on the faces of a unit cube of porous material. This tensor can be split into two parts. a hydrostatic and a deviatoric part, as follows2,3,1 where the component of the hydrostatic stress system, a. equals The hydrostatic stress causes a change in volume whereas the deviatoric stress system gives rise to a change in shape only. One of the difficulties in describing changes of volume occurring in reservoir rocks is that the relations connecting these volume changes with external and internal stresses are essentially non-linear. A complete description requires the bulk volume, V,,, as well as the pore volume,V,,. to be known as a function of both the changes in pore fluid tension (v) and the hydrostatic tension on the outer boundary.

Hydrogen additions of 390 ppm to A-55 titanium and 368 ppm to Ti-8 pet Mn have no deleterious Hydrogenadditionseffect on the unnotched and notched rotating-beam fatigue properties of these materials. &apos;These amounts of hydrogen, however, are sufficient to cause severe notch-impact thesematerials.embrittlement in A-55 titanium and pronounced loss of tensile ductility in Ti-8 pet Mn. The lack of embrittling effect in fatigue in the latter alloy is consistent with the postulated strain-aging mechanism of hydrogen embrittlement in a-ß alloys. There is a significant strain-agingincrease in the unnotched endurance limit of A-55 titanium with the addition of hydrogen. This increase may be explained as the result of internal heating effects which would dissolve the hydride and cause solid-solution strengthening. TITANIUM and its alloys may be seriously embrittled by relatively small amounts of hydrogen. The form which this embrittlement takes has been shown to vary with alloy type. The a alloys, for example, suffer most strongly from loss of notch-bend impact toughness&apos; when sufficient hydrogen is added, and this effect has generally been associated with the presence of hydride phase in the micro-structure. In a-ß alloys, on the other hand, hydrogen is most detrimental to tensile ductility in slow-speed tests,2-1 and the embrittlement may be detected in a most convincing manner by means of rupture tests at room temperature. This particular kind of embrittlement has not been associated with a change in microstructure, but has been classified rather generally as associated with a strain-aging type of mechanism.&apos; In the present paper, the effect of an embrittling amount of hydrogen on the rotating-beam fatigue properties of both an a and an a-ß titanium alloy is covered. For this study, annealed commercially pure (A-55) titanium was chosen as an a alloy, and equilibrated and stabilized Ti-8 pet Mn as representative of a typical a-ß alloy. Nominal hydrogen levels of 20 and 400 ppm were evaluated, the latter amount having been shown previously to be severely detrimental to the impact toughness of commercially pure titanium and to cause pronounced strain-aging embrittlement in the Ti-8 pet Mn alloy. The only report of the effect of hydrogen on the fatigue properties of titanium is given by Anderson et al.,° in which a push-pull type of fatigue test was conducted on as-received commercial-purity titanium sheet. Much scatter was found in the results, but generally the presence of hydrides slightly decreased the fatigue strength of unnotched specimens in the longitudinal direction. The results of notched tests were masked too greatly by scatter to be significant. Experimental Procedure Preparation of Materials—Analyses of the A-55 titanium and the Ti-8 pet Mn alloy used in this investigation are given in Table I, which indicates the 8 pet Mn alloy to be more nearly a 6 pet Mn alloy. This alloy will be referred to as Ti-8 pet Mn, however, since this is the commercially designated composition. Both alloys were received in the form of5/8-in. diam rod and, after suitable surface preparation, 5-in. lengths were vacuum annealed at 820°C. Half of the rods for each material were then hydrogenated at 820°C to a nominal hydrogen content of 400 ppm. The hydrogenated and vacuum-annealed A-55 rods were hot swaged at 700°C from 5/8-in. diam to 1/4-in. diam, and then annealed 1 hr at 800°C and air cooled prior to preparation into test specimens. Fabrication of the Ti-8 pet Mn alloy was by hot swaging to 3/8-in. diam at 760" and then 1/4-in. diam at 704°C. This material was then annealed 1 hr at 704", followed by furnace cooling to 593"C, and finally air cooling to room temperature. Evaluation—In order to examine more completely the effects of hydrogen on the particular materials studied, slow-speed tensile and notch-bend impact properties were determined in addition to fatigue data. Tensile specimens were of the standard ASTM type with a reduced section of 1/8-in. diam and a gage length of 1/2 in. A subsize cylindrical Izod specimen was used for impact tests. These specimens had a 45" notch with a 0.005-in. radius and a 0.150-in. root diam, and the stress concentration factor of this notch in bending was Kr = 3. Both the ten-

THE continual improvements in. the two extremes of the drilling, unit, the drill and bit, have prompted critical examination of the drill steel, the weak link of this drilling unit. Obviously, little is to be gained from the betterment of the drill and bit if the drill steel which transmits the force needed for drilling from the machine to the bit cannot stand long hard service. The technology of the bit has advanced from the integral type to steel detachables, thence to the tungsten carbide insert. The carbide insert is the most significant advance in the bit, bringing it to the level of a machine tool with its performance records under constant surveillance. Long steel changes have become advantageous because the carbide bit will drill greater footages without replacement than did the steel bit: The development of the tungsten carbide insert opened new fields of endeavor in drilling with percussion drills here- to fore known, but limited by the steel bit. After the introduction of the tungsten carbide bit, drill manufacturers began promotion of long feed shells, lighter drifters and stopers, and easily handled auxiliary equipment. Ultimately this promotion of better equipment was intended to increase the bit-against-rock time of the drill shift. Advantages of the uninterrupted drilling period of a long steel change and faster setup time of lighter drill machines are lost when the shank fails in the machine, rod failure requires continual changing, or the bit breaks off in the hole. At a time of great antiquity when our Yomato tribe had not yet found its way throughout the country, there lived in Japan barbarous tribes of the stone age, whose dwellings were vertical caves covered with roof&apos;s of twigs and weeds. In a cave lately discovered at the village of Morita, 10 miles west from the port of Aomori, there were found pieces of micaceous iron-ore and psilomelane, with oval holes pierced from both sides. Apparently these objects were regarded as ornaments or curios, without being applied to any practical use. Among the traditions given in the Nihonshoki, an ancient history of Japan, there is one relating to the mining industry. According to this tradition, in the mythological age Izanami-no-Mikoto gave birth to Kanayamahiko-no-Mikoto, god of mines, and Amaterasu-Okami (the sun-goddess) was armed with swords. It came to pass at one time that she concealed herself in Ama-no-Iwato ("Heavenly Cave"), and several gods made contrivances to entice her out. Among them, Ishikori-dome, a smith, made a mirror with copper obtained from the Ama-no-Kagoyama, by means of a pair of bellows known as the Ama-no-habuki, which was made of a deer-skin. It is recorded also that Susanb-no-Mikoto, her younger brother, observed the abundance of gold and silver in Korea, where his descendants were to reign, and urged them to provide themselves with boats to convey them across the Sea of Japan. Salt production in Louisiana and Texas at the present time is entirely from salt domes of the interior and coastal groups. Before and during the Civil War salt was recovered from numerous salines and salt springs by evaporation in open kettles. The location of these in nearly every instance was near what is now known to be a salt dome, and the source of the salt in the salines and spring waters was that in the salt core. The tops of many of the shallower domes have been subjected to erosion1. The discovery that the salt occurred as large masses of rock salt in the form of domes was made in May, 1802, at Avery Island, La., by John Marsh Avery, grandson of the original owner, John C. Marsh, who built the old salt works in 18122. The first shaft for mining was sunk on the Avery dome in 1867 by Chouteau and Price. It was 90 ft. deep, about 58 ft. being in solid salt. It was abandoned in 1870. There are three general groups or fields of salt domes; interior Louisiana in northern Louisiana, interior Texas in northeastern Texas, and the coastal domes nearer the Gulf Coast and extending from the Mississippi River to the Rio Grande. This last group contains by far the greatest number of domes. As many of the coastal domes especially are prolific producers of petroleum and a few of sulfur, their geology has been intensively studied and fully covered in the literature. The depth to the top of the salt varies from near the surface, where shallow ground waters have dissolved the salt to just below recent deposits, to several thousand feet, where the depth has been cstimated only by geophysical methods. The diameter of the salt core varies from less than 1/2 mile to over 2 miles. Only domes where the salt is comparatively near the surface have been developed for commercial salt. Three deeper domes, which will be described later, have recently been developed or are in process of development, as a source of brine for chemical use. On the basis of data obtained from microscopic examination, melting observations, cooling curves, X-ray analyses, and resistance measurements, phase diagrams have been proposed for the Th-Cb and Th-Ti alloy systems. Both are simple eutectic systems and have no terminal solid solubility or intermediate phases. The eutectic between thorium and columbium occurs at a composition of about 8 wt pct Cb and a temperature of 1435°C. The Th-Ti eutectic occurs at 1190°C at the composition 12 wt pct Ti. No change was observed in the transformation temperature of thorium in either system or in the titanium transformation. RECENT study of thorium and its alloys has been promoted because of the possibility of employing this metal in nuclear reactors. Their corrosion resistant properties, nuclear characteristics, and high melting points put columbium and titanium among the many metals being employed in the study of thorium alloys. Since a knowledge of the phase relationships would be important in the application of such an alloy, investigations were undertaken to propose phase diagrams for the Th-Cb and Th-Ti systems. Experimental Procedures Thorium metal sponge was specially prepared for use in this investigation. Carbon in a quantity less than 0.04 wt pct was the principal impurity. There was also less than 0.01 pct each of iron, calcium, zinc, aluminum, and nitrogen in the thorium. Columbium, both as a powder and sheet metal, was obtained from the Fansteel Metallurgical Corp. The manufacturer&apos;s specifications indicated that the metal contains less than 1 wt pct total impurities. An analysis of the metal showed approximately 0.18 pct C in the powder and less than 0.05 pct C in the sheet. The titanium used was commercial sponge, reported to be 99.5 pct Ti. An analysis showed that this metal contained 0.2 pct Fe. Preparation of Alloys—Since the metals used in this investigation are reactive and might become contaminated on melting in a refractory crucible, the alloys were prepared by arc melting. The titanium sponge was employed in the form of small lumps while the columbium additions were made either as pressed pellets of powder or as clippings from sheet. The alloying material and the thorium sponge were melted together under argon in conventional arc melting equipment employing a tungsten electrode and a water cooled copper crucible.

The interfacial free energy of the high angle grain boundary and of the stacking fault is assumed to be thermodynamically equivalent to the corresponding in-terfacial tensions. In terms of the true dihedral angles & between the intersecting interfaces, the equilibrium of interfacial tensions in the direction parallel to the stacking fault yields: ysF = -ygb(cos F1+ cos ±cosF2) Here, ysF is the stacking fault free energy and ygb is the grain boundary free energy, assumed equal on both sides of the intersection. Forces acting normal to the grain boundary, of the form ??gb/?F,l are assumed negligible as the grain boundary remains straight for a considerable distance on either side of the intersection. The micrograph of Fig. 1 may actually consist of several closely spaced stacking faults on the same slip plane.
