LEACHING of mined-out areas at the Arizona property of the Ray Mines Division, Kennecott Copper Corp., was started on Jan. 20, 1.937, and by July 1, 1938, 10,000,000 lb. of copper had been produced by this method. Leaching operations at present are confined to the western portion of the ore body and over an area of approximately ten acres. The ore in this area was extremely high in pyrite and the copper content, which averaged slightly in excess of 1 per cent, was the result of incomplete secondary enrichment by solutions which apparently worked laterally from the main ore body. Above the ore was an unaltered zone of primary or protore averaging 125 ft. in thickness and containing approximately 0.6 per cent copper. Above this was the capping or leached zone averaging 50 ft. thick.

The following paper is based chiefly on work done for the North Carolina Geological Survey, and is presented here by permission of Professor J. A. Holmes, State Geologist. It represents, in a very general way, the field-results obtained during the summer months of 1893, and 1894, and part of 1895; and the portions pertaining to North Carolina are, to a certain extent, abstracts of a report shortly to be published as Bulletin No. 11 of the State Survey. Less emphasis, however, is here laid on the petrographic descriptions of the peridotites, and more detailed treatment is given to subjects pertaining to methods of mining, cleaning, and utilization of the commercial product, corundum. Some of the most extensive fields for investigation which this subject presents have been scarcely more than suggested.

What progress has been made in rapid excavation of tunnels and shafts? Where do we go from here? To get some answers to these questions was the reason that 500 tunnel men-contractors, geologists, professors, lawyers, mining engineers--came to the University of Minnesota May 15-17. The attendance of 500 astonished conference organizer Professor D. H. Yardley, who had anticipated half that number. They came from Japan, South Africa, Austria, Sweden, and Australia to name a few, and an officer of the Corps of Engineers thought all his people should have been there. The Civil and Mining Engineering Departments of the University combined for the program, which was staged by M. K. Cragun for the General Extension Division. The Saga of the Oso Tunnel The present state of the art of rapid excavation is "good." There is little controversy about where we go from here and what's more, this reporter finds that the technical know-how to automate excavation in any kind of ground is extant, even if it will take some years to achieve this state. In a nut- shell though, the present status can be seen in its various ramifications in the saga of the Oso Tunnel, as told by V. L. "Vic" Stevens of Boyles Brothers Drilling Co. :

SHORTLY after the Armistice there appeared a few references to numerous attempts that had been made to produce steel without the aid of manganese, or at least with manganese in abnormally low percentage. Some years later, during two consecutive days of train travel, I had excellent opportunity to read Sir Robert Hadfield's book, entitled "Metallurgy-Its Influence on Modern Progress," and also his paper, "The Metal Manganese and Its Properties : Also the Production of Ferro-Manganese and Its History," presented at the spring meeting of the Iron and Steel Institute, 1927. Oxidation hardening of cylindrical and spherical specimens first decreases with depth below the surface, but then increases again as the center is approached. This is in agreement with the view that this change in hardness is mainly determined by the change in velocity of the oxidation boundary, which affects the dispersion of the oxide. WHEN a thick slab of silver containing 0.3 pct Mg by weight is internally oxidized, the hardness measured on a cross section is found to decrease considerably with distance from the surface.&apos; This phenomenon has been attributed to the diminution of the velocity of the oxidation boundary. The smaller this velocity is, the more slowly the free-oxygen concentration rises towards the concentration in equilibrium with the oxygen gas. And a small 0 concentration favors dissociation and thus conglomeration of the oxide. For instance, the hardness decreases more rapidly during long annealings in nitrogen than in air.&apos; Measurements by Gregory and Smith3 on sections through internally oxidized Al-silver wire showed a smaller variation in hardness, probably because the wire diameter was only 0.9 mm. Wood4 found a drop in hardness with depth in internally oxidized Al-copper strip, and also—by electron microscopy—the concomitant increase in Al2O3 particle size. Under certain circumstances internal oxidation leads to formation of rather irregular inner oxide films in the midst of dispersed oxide. This special sort of conglomeration—discussed in Ref. 5—is also favored by greater depth below the surface.3,5 In this paper hardness measurements in large diameter cylindrical and spherical specimens are described. Here the oxidation velocity* goes through ness initially decreases with depth but increases again towards the center. Normally, the diffusion coefficient D1 of oxygen is very large compared to D2, that of the dissolved metal. If, furthermore, the atomic fraction c2 of the latter is much larger than the O-solubility cl- but c2D2 << c1D1- the velocities in question are easily calculated2 to be: for the cylinder and for the sphere. Here p is the radial coordinate of the oxidation boundary and R the specimen radius, which in dilute silver alloys is constant, as no external oxidation occurs. These equations have been derived for a divalent solute; for nondivalent solutes c2 has to be multiplied by half the valency. The equations are not valid near the center. For which can be considered as a standard case,2 the Eqs [I] and [2] begin to yield U-values which are appreciably too high for p/R = 0.05 and 0.15, respectively. But at the v-minima they are still very good approximations. These minima lie at p = emlR= 0.37R in the cylinder and p = 1/2 R in the sphere. Other factors besides the velocity v will also influence the hardness. The oxide concentration cox is constant in a flat strip, apart from a narrow region in the middle,2 but in cylindrical and spherical specimens cox decreases steadily with depth. I HAVE now traversed for you in the small and fragile bark of my writing all the shores of the deep and spacious sea embracing the uses of material fires, drawn on by my own desire to enrich you with more learning and with the procedures of these things, as much as to satisfy your demands. Having through the grace of God arrived at the appointed end of my voyage and neither knowing nor perceiving a way of going farther, I had decided to furl the [167] sails and cast die heavy anchors into the water in order to enjoy in tranquillity respite from my sailing, when I was warned by my pilot that before I could disembark I should turn my glance backward and reexamine my work in detail to see if there were any part that had by chance remained undescribed in the obscurity of silence. When I did this there immediately appeared in my mind&apos;s eye the many sublimates and smoky tinctures that had been made by the burning and most powerful fire of love. I need not say that I knew of it in far-off countries or from the knowledge of others, but I knew it in my own breast and as my very own and can therefore surely esteem it as hotter than all the other fires that the world calls by that name. Although today its sparks and living flames are spent because of my cold and hoary season, nevertheless it is true that the memory of acts of love of long ago still remains with some smoke and warmth. Therefore, since in this work of mine I wish to describe for you the effects and powers of fires, I should logically have spoken of this before any of the others, because of its actual nearness and the great acquaintance I had with it. But since I have had the glance of my intentions directed at distant things, I have behaved as one does who does not see where he places his feet because he is looking at the sky, or as one who thinks about the affairs of others and forgets his own. But now I do not wish to pass over this thing and I wish to correct my error, particularly in order to provide a happier ending to my written work than by remaining among the horrible uproar of guns, powder, and saltpeter, which would be a harsher ending than speaking of love. PRESIDENT Edwin Ludlow and Secretary Bradley Stoughton made their first-trip of the year 1921 to visit Local Sections of the Institute, and talk over Institute interests and policies, during the early part of April. The main purpose of the trip, as usual, was to bring back to headquarters suggestions or comments on the Institute&apos;s work on the part of, members. The trip was made a brief, one by the necessity of remaining in New Fork until Apr. 1, and of the attendance of President Ludlow at a meeting of American Engineering Council and. the organization of a Philadelphia Section of the Institute in Philadelphia on Apr. 16.

BETWEEN 1945 and 1948 the author made studies of the western phosphate industry and its potentialities. These included an appraisal of the opportunities for western development of the industry, studies of production costs, of market potentials, of transportation economics, and of industry location. This paper will be directed toward pointing up the factors which have an important bearing on the establishment of fertilizer plants in the western area. Industry Location Factors: There are, of course, an infinite number of possible organizational setups which might require consideration. However, the phosphate industry is simple enough so that studies of the most probable alternatives can be made conveniently. The salient factors which require special consideration in such a study are: (I) the location of the raw materials, (2) the location, size, and character of the present and potential markets, (3) the location of energy sources and materials required for fertilizer processing, (4) the location and capacity of present manufacturing facilities, (5) the cost of assembling the materials and energy needed in manufacturing, and (6) the cost of distributing the manufactured product. Raw Material Supplies: Rock phosphate is the raw material for the manufacturing of phosphate fertilizer. In the United States the important known deposits of this material are located in three general areas (fig. 1). The western deposits, comprising about 60 pct of the nation&apos;s supply, are in the four-state area—Idaho, Wyoming, Utah, and Montana. The Florida deposits comprise roughly 38 pct of the national supply. The Tennessee deposits, comprising about 2 pct of the national supply, have been the most important source until recent years. The western deposits, which are virtually undeveloped, have not been used to any extent to meet the nation&apos;s need for phosphate rock and phosphate fertilizer. Fertilizer Markets: The large national markets for fertilizer are in the midwestern and eastern United States (fig. 2). The principal far-western markets are along the Pacific Coast, especially in California. Until recent years the western markets have been extremely limited, whereas the markets in the eastern United States have long been established and manufacturing facilities have been provided to meet these needs (fig. 3). In recent years the western markets have expanded very rapidly, continuing to grow throughout the war years and postwar period at a similar rate. The question always arises as to whether this is a temporary war-swollen market which will shrink back to its original size as soon as the present agricultural price levels drop. In order to answer this question consideration must be given to the character of the market (fig. 4). I have considered seventeen western and midwestern states in the western market area where transportation costs from the western deposits are equal to or lower than those from Florida. They include all states west of a line drawn through Chicago, Kansas City and the western boundary of New Mexico. In the mewar period this was a small market totaling only 37,000 tons of P,O, annually. The 1946 total for this same area was approximately 200,000 tons. Considerably more fertilizer would have been used in 1946 had adequate supplies been available. Estimates of future markets are difficult to make, but we do have some indices that are useful. The

REEP studies and measurements in most in-V> stances are based on a relatively gross gage length. Even in some recent theoretical studies on the mechanism of creep, changes were followed by means of X-rays and metallography without regard for the behavior of the individual grains and grain boundaries.&apos;" Analytical studies of creep have frequently indicated that more than one competing process is operative and that the ultimate creep performance depends on the effects of temperature, time, and strain rate as well as grain size.&apos;-" he grains and grain boundaries are known to respond differently to these variables but the extent of the response is still little known, especially in poly-crystalline materials where the relative orientations of grains and grain boundaries are important. This paper reports some experimental observations of the behavior of the grain boundaries and their effect on the deformation in the grains. High purity aluminum was used to avoid complications of aging reactions, second phase, inclusions, etc. Experimental Procedure A small vertical nichrome wound furnace was built to permit direct loading on the test specimen. This furnace is capable of operating up to about 1300°F with reasonable temperature distribution. A ground rectangular quartz window, 1.25x0.5 in., is imbedded in the external stainless steel tube to permit observations of the creep process with a microscope. An argon atmosphere ,was provided to prevent oxidation. The quartz window caused a temperature gradient between the back and front surfaces of the specimen of 15" at 700°F. The temperature gradient could be cut down to 3°F along the length of the specimen by adjusting shunts across the furnace windings. An ordinary metallurgical microscope with a working distance of 14 mm was rebuilt so that it could be moved in three mutual perpendicular directions. Visual examination could be made with either a 30X eyepiece or a 15X filar eyepiece. Using an objective of focal length 24.3 mm and a numerical aperture 0.20 a total magnification of 120X or 240X could be obtained. High purity aluminum rated at 99.995 pct was supplied by the Aluminum Co. of America as % in. then the gage portion was further machined to 3/16 in. diam. The ends were Y4 in. diam and threaded to fit available specimen holders. Two opposite flat surfaces of the gage portion were obtained by milling, giving final dimensions of the gage portion of 3/4x3/16x3/32 in. Machined specimens were first electropolished in Jacquet&apos;s solution.&apos; Reference marks were produced by pressing a thin sewing needle into the surface of the specimen. The specimen was then annealed at 900°F for 24 hr and at 1150°F for 12 hr. Typical macrostructures of specimens treated in this manner are shown in Fig. 1. The range of the grain size was 1 to 5.5 mm (see Fig. l), but most of the grains were of 2.5 mm and went through the whole thickness of the specimen. The specimen was re-electropolished and etched electrolytically to reveal the grain boundaries. In order to reveal the orientation difference of the grains, etch pits were produced on the surface of the grains by etching in a mixture of hydrochloric and nitric acids (HC1, 45 pct; HNO,, 10 pct; H,O, 45 , by volume). The specimens were very carefully put into the holders and furnace; yet even with this care, fine slip lines were developed on the specimen surface.

THE real and permanent advances which take place in any industry are for the most part slow evolutions which frequently develop and grow almost imperceptibly from clay to clay. A meritorious idea may and generally does require long and patient development and commercial application under a variety of conditions and in a number of localities before it emerges as standard and generally accepted practice. There must be not only technical perfection but also economic advantage. Thus a cross-section taken at any particular time of an industry may reveal little that is distinctly new and yet there may have been considerable progress. During the past year there has been little that is new in milling and yet there has been real progress; some problems have been solved and some of what we may term the newer developments have become more firmly, established.

NO physical impairment can be more serious than the partial or complete loss of sight. With reasonably good eyesight, a person is equipped to care for life and I limb, provided a rational measure of t caution is manifested. When the sight of one eye is lost or badly impaired, one-half of this God-given asset is gone, and extreme care must be taken to prevent the tragedy of total darkness that closes out the beauty of sky, field and mountain, the faces of relatives and friends, and either removes entirely or in part one&apos;s capacity to produce and earn. During 1933, The Union Pacific Coal Co., operating ten coal mines in Wyoming, decided to undertake a visual survey of all of its mine operating officials and employees. Although the cost of workmen&apos;s compensation paid because of eye injuries was material, the management was more deeply concerned with the social loss and the suffering resulting from the many eye injuries. As every element of coal production cost must be scrutinized, accurate data on all accidents, with the workmen&apos;s compensation paid therefor, are carried forward monthly. The number of accidents to eyesight and the resultant compensation paid are shown in Table 1 for nine calendar years:

St. Joseph Lead Company&apos;s Southeast Missouri mines have been successfully converted to the use of ammonium nitrate and fuel oil as a blasting agent. This is significant to the company because it means a savings of a quarter of a million dollars per year. It is significant to the mining industry because of the unusual conditions involved and the methods and materials used to overcome them. St. Joe has been mining the low grade lead deposits of southeast Missouri since 1864. This ore occurs as disseminated galena in widely scattered pockets within the Bonneterre dolomite. The daily production of 20,000 tons is obtained from several hundred small, room and pillar stopes covering an area 10 miles long and five miles wide. Distribution of explosives and other materials is a real problem. Drilling in the stopes is done with air legs, column- mounted machines or jumbos, depending on the size and location of the stope. Drill hole sizes vary from 1 3/8-in. diam down to 1 1/8-in. Each driller charges his own holes and shoots them at the end of the shift. Numerous shafts provide natural ventilation which is supplemented in isolated areas by churn drill holes equipped with blowers. Water, in most stopes, is not a serious problem, although the mines do produce about 20,000 gpm.

Slurry transportation of coarse coal from the mining face to the preparation plant has proved successful in a West Virginia underground mine. Coal has been pumped from the mining section for several months. The system is currently being provided with the flexible link to the face to allow for continuous transportation. Some future plans for coal mines and projections for broader applications of the transportation method are given.

Although the amount of dust that will be actually recovered in the six main dust-control systems cannot be accurately stated until the tests mentioned previously are carried out, it is estimated that the average air entering the wet collectors will contain around 5 grains of dust particles per cubic foot. This means that the six systems handling a total of about 133,000 cu.ft. of air per minute will return about 68 1/2 tons of dust to the concentrator per day and since the copper in this dust will average around 2 per cent, the total recovery is approximately 1.37 tons of copper every 24 hours. This important copper recovery is not due entirely to the dust-control system since in a plant without control only the duct that is dispersed to the atmosphere represents a loss. A conservative estimate of the recovery of copper solely due to the dust control system would be about half of the total or approximately 0.70 tons of copper per day.

The data about production in this county are exceedingly meager, and there are few reliable data about shipments. It is probable that consid¬erable amounts of coal from here moved north to Erie by both the Beaver and Erie. Canal and the Erie and Pittsburgh Railroad, and if so, they are included with Mercer County. The data in the early state reports are very inaccurate and are always much too low. Much of this coal was used in local furnaces and iron plants and not handled by railroads. There was some production in this county on the line of the Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne and Chicago Railroad, of which no record can be found. The estimated production is based on the number of mines reported as operating in the county at various dates and their probable output, as suggested occasionally in county histories. It is believed that these figures are below, rather than above, the actual figures, which can now never be obtained.

A certain amount of interest has been indicated recently in the resistance to oxidation at high temperatures of iron-aluminum alloys (rich in iron). Hautmanl published a paper in which some interesting results are given. According to his paper, only alloys containing at least 8 per cent aluminum indicate a marked improvement in their resistance to oxidation. At about this aluminum content, however, alloys become brittle, which considerably reduces their commercial value. About two years ago the author performed a series of experiments, the results of which are presented here. A series of iron-aluminum-carbon alloys was prepared by melting electrolytic iron, aluminum and high-carbon iron alloy in an induction vacuum furnace.2 The list of these alloys is given in Table I. This brief paper is designed to place on record some interesting occurrences, recently observed during an examination of the Golden Age Mine, in Boulder county, Colorado. Leaving the little village of Jamestown—or Jimtown, as it is more generally called—located in the canon of James creek, the road winds up a steep mountain composed of the coarse gray granite, with occasional belts of gneiss, common to all the mineral-bearing sections of Boulder county, to the summit of the front range of the Continental Divide. Here are located the mines known as the Golden Age and the Sentinel, the relative locations of which are shown in Fig. 1. The Golden Age location covers the outcrop of a quartz-porphyry dike, which cuts through the granite country-rock with a strike of about N. 70&apos; E. This dike varies in width from a few feet, as at a point between the main shaft and the Hill shaft, to about 50 feet,

Alaska requires an adequate fuel supply for its development, and has large potential coal reserves ranging from lignite to subbituminous and anthracite. Coal production in the Territory now is less than the requirements. In L947, production was 361,000 tons, divided about equally between bituminous coal from the Matanuska field and subbituminous coal from the Nenana field. There is need for development of modern mechanized mines, which should produce the required output with a minimum of workers. These mines should not be thought of in the light of large potential capacity, as in the States. However, these new mines should be developed by modern methods, which should result in lower costs than at Present. Because of the diverse physical conditions in the coal fields, intensive investigation by diamond drilling is necessary to properly plan the development and equipment of mine sites at minimum cost. The Bureau of Mines is doing this now in the Wishbone Hill area of the Matanuska field. All coal land in Alaska is government-owned and subject to the Coal Leasing Act. Coal mining in Alaska has been handicapped by an inadequate supply of dependable workers. Wage scales have been very high in recent years, and "floaters" have been attracted to the coal mines. This type of labor is not conducive to efficient operation. Modernization of mines will require skilled and dependable workers and to induce such men to become interested in coal mining in Alaska, modern facilities, such as modern houses, schools, churches, and recreation halls, must be provided near the mines. Alaska is still a frontier and improvements in living standards must accompany development of mines in order that a stable community may be established. Coal is known to have been mined in Alaska at Port Graham, on Cook Inlet, by the Russians in 1854. During the Klondike gold rush in 1898, coal was mined in scattered areas for use on steamers plying the Yukon River and its navigable tributaries. After the Alaska Railroad was built, two important fields were developed—the Nenana and the Matanuska (Fig 1). The Bering River field was explored by the Guggenheim interests at one time, and a railroad to the area was constructed. However, the field was abandoned because of litigation and reported unsatisfactory physical condition of the beds. There are areas that today are unimportant but which may be developed in the future. Possibly the most important of these is the deposits of subbituminous coal adjacent to Cook Inlet, near Homer, on the Kenai Peninsula (see Fig 1). It is expected that the demand for coal in the Kenai Peninsula will increase because the population in that area has increased as a result of agricultural development. Numerous outcrops of coal are exposed on the peninsula and development of a mine there would obviate dependence on supplies of coal from the Matanuska field. Coal from this field must be shipped approximately 160 miles by rail to Seward and transported thence by boat about 180 miles to Homer. There has been no regular boat service from Anchorage to Homer. There are deposits of coal in the Arctic region but a description of them will not be given in this paper, which will describe the more important deposits in the Alaska Railroad belt. The results of a reconnaissance in the Arctic have been described.&apos; Description of Fields MATANUSKA FIELD The Matanuska field lies in the valleys of the Matanuska River and its tributaries and their separating ridges. This field has been interpreted by geologists as a sunken fault block that separated the Talkeetna Range of mountains from the Chugach Range. The Matanuska River flows west along the south side of the field and the Glenn highway, which extends from Anchorage via Palmer to the Richardson highway near Glen Allan, follows the Matanuska Valley.
