The term "operational research" was probably first used to describe work started under E. C. Williams, now Director, SHAPE Air Defense Technical Center, late in 1937 or 1938, at the Bawdsey Research Station of the British Air Ministry, a laboratory center concerned with the development of radar equipment. After the practicability of the early techniques had been demonstrated, a large (for those days) program of development and installation was authorized. It was very soon realized, both by the Royal Air Force and by the scientists that almost as important as the gear itself was the way in which it should be used. Accordingly, it was decided that some scientists should cooperate to study the way in which the equipment should be deployed and operated in conjunction with the Royal Air Force. To distinguish this work from the normal work of a research and development establishment, the term "operational research" was coined. It merely meant at this time that this particular section of scientists was to be concerned with the use of the gear rather than with its technical development and it seemed natural to those concerned to adopt the word "operations" which has a specific connotation in the armed forces.' This method was later extended to peacetime business enterprise, government operations and other human activities. Operations research appears to have penetrated the extractive industries more slowly and less completely than other industries, the military, or the government. This may be due (1) to a difference in the attitude of management towards operations research, or towards research of any kind, for that matter; (2) to unsuitability of the extractive industries for application of the operations research method; (3) to inaccessibility of the data; (4) or to a lack of trained personnel who are interested in applying operations research to the mineral industries.

THE IRON HUNTER. By Chase S. Osborn, pp. 316, Ills. 10. The MacMillan Company, New York. 1919. An autobiography, the story of a Hoosier boy who fought his way to manhood and power through early misfortune and poverty, from street urchin and newsboy, to editor and author; from lumberjack and dock walloper to statesman and Governor of Michigan. The reader has the measure of the man in the first chapter, a dramatic recital of how the fighting boy editor cleaned up a lawless mining camp of 40 years ago. The thread of the narrative is the author's life-long devotion to outdoor living, ex-ploration and travel. Residing in Sault de Sainte Marie, Mich., in the heart of the Lake Superior country, he took his delight and, incidentally, found his fortune in prospecting the north woods for iron ore; eventually, extending his travels to the continents and many of the islands of the world, he discovered what, he believes-to be a great iron range in Madagascar. In this book there is plenty of anecdote, a great deal of wholesome social and po¬litical philosophy and some interesting sidelights on the characters of some of the author's prominent contemporaries in the political life of Michigan. The style is direct and animated, flavored and illuminated with the vernacular of Hoosierdom and the woods country of the North. The author levies on the vocabulary of the sciences and the classics for many a noun and adjective and, with Rooseveltian license, now and then coins a word. The reader's interest will be gripped from cover to cover, albeit he may occasionally need a dictionary. R. C. A.

In the quantitative interpretation of the SP logs, the electrochemical component is generally taken equal to — K log Rm /Rw where K has the theoretical value corresponding to solutions of pure sodium chloride. This method may be misleading when relatively large quantities of salts other than NaCl are present in form-rrtion waters—as is generally the case for low salinities —or in gyp-base muds. In such cases recourse is made in the field to changing the K value or to adding a correction term to the equation on the basis of local experience. An investigation has been made in the laboratory of the influence of HCO3, SO4=, Ca++, and Mg++ on the amplitude of the SP deflection, which included in par-ricular determinations of the activity coefficients of Ca++ and Mg++. The theory, the experimental techniques and a tentative method for applying the results are described. So far, applications to actual field cases where chemical analyses of waters were available have provided an excellent confirmation of the proposed method. The case of the SP in very salty brines is also considered and it is shown that the use of activity data for sodium gives satisfactory results. HISTORICAL In early times of electrical logging, the SP curve was used exclusively as a tool for the location of permeable beds and the definition of their boundaries. Later, with the introduction of methods of quantitative analysis, attention was called to the possibility of deriving from the SP log some information on the formation water resistivity, which constitutes one essential element for the computation of water saturation from log data. The first laboratory experiments' in 1932 had shown that, as a result of electrochemical phenomena arising at the contact of the niud and the formation, the amplitude of the deflection of the SP curve was, at least partly, a function of the salt concentration of interstitial water and accordingly of its resistivity. It was indicated that the amplitude of the electrochemical component of the SP should be equal to K log R1/R2, R1 and R2 being the resistivities of the mud and of the formation water respectively. However, the exact value of the K coefficient was not determined at that time because the surface clay used for a laboratory model was far from an ideal shale membrane. Consequently, the way was not yet open towards quantitative interpretation. In the early forties, Tixier reported2, on the basis of field log observations, the following equation for the case of NaCl solutions, SP = -71 log f1c1/f2c2, c1 and c2 being the concentrations and f1, f2 the mean activity coefficients. The local variations observed in the empirical values of K, chiefly in the Rocky Mountains, led him to advance the opinion that, besides the relative amounts, the nature of the salts present in the solutions had a bearing on the magnitude of the SP. At about the same time Mounce and Rust- ad published laboratory results which emphasized the part played by the shale in the generation of the SP. On the basis of laboratory tests and theoretical considerations, Wyllie in 1948' published the following equation of the electrochemical SP for the case of NaCl solutions, SP= - 71 log (a1)m/(a2)m

INTRODUCTION Throughout the world, the caving mining methods of ore-draw under the overlying waste rock are sublevel caving in Sweden, block caving in U.S.A. and forced block caving and sublevel caving with sill-pillar in U.S.S.R. These caving methods are of high efficiency, low cost and large production (especially the block caving method) when compared to opencast mining. From the ore production of all under- ground mines, the largest annual production of underground metalliferous mines in the world is caving methods. The sublevel caving in Kiruna Iron Mine of Sweden has reached annual ore production over 20 million tons in 1974. The block caving in Climax Molybdenum Mine and San Manuel Copper Mine of U.S.A. both have produced about 40 thou- sand tons of ore per day in 1971. At the same time, the productivity of Kiruna was 12 thousand tons of ore per man-year, Climax 42.8 tons (48.3 short tons) per man-shift and San Manuel 29.01 tons (32.1 short tons) per man-shift. The main feature of this group of mining methods is the underground extraction of ore from beneath overlying caveable waste rock. Since the loss and dilution of ore are inherent (sometimes to a great extent), the control of ore-draw in these methods as com- pared with other methods is very important. Consequently, concerned Universities and Research Institutes have devoted great amounts of research on ore-draw theory and control management which has provided positive results to mine production, and has apparently promoted the development of the caving methods. During 1979 in China, metalliferous underground mines accounted for 15.22% of the total iron ore produced, while also accounting for 56% of total non-ferrous production. According to the mining methods, sub level caving in the principal underground iron mines counted for about 56.74% of total principal underground iron mine production, but only about 1% of total non-ferrous underground mine production. Relative to forced block caving and sublevel caving with sill pillar, the Chinese non-ferrous under- ground mines estimated about 35% of total non-ferrous underground mine production from these two methods, mainly from the latter. From the trend of development of underground metalliferous mines in China, the percentage of production in caving will be increased in the future, especially in block caving and forced block caving which have already been given great attention in the mining circle. In these types of mining methods the ore is drawn from the stope under a large area of overlying waste rock, which complicates the basic regulation and control of ore-draw, but provides lower loss and dilution than sublevel caving. Because of these reasons, the Kiruna Iron Mine in Sweden is intending to change its sublevel caving by testing a sublevel shrinkage caving method and considering a large area of ore-draw beneath the stope as an advantage. Therefore, the basic regulation and control management of ore-draw under a large area, as practiced in China, will be discussed in this paper. BASIC REGULATION OF ORE- DRAW FROM CAVING STOPE The aim of studying ore-draw under a large area of overlying waste rock is to se- cure a planned draw schedule that guarantees a certain plane of interface between ore and waste rock, and controls the change of its shape in spatial position for reducing ore loss and dilution during the draw process. Presently, the ellipsoid theory is comparatively near the actual attitude of ore-draw from the cave. 1. Ore Drawn Out from Single Drawpoint Laboratory testing and practical experience all show that after a certain amount of ore has been drawn out from a drawpoint, its original shape in the stope before drawing is more or less similar to an ellipsoid, hence the name "draw ellipsoid." This draw ellipsoid is cut at the bottom by a horizontal plane corresponding to the raise of the drawpoint, and its volume can be calculated by the following formula:

Production of crude oil in Tennessee during 5945 was slightly more than 6000 bbl., the lowest figure since 1916. Approximately 5500 bbl. was produced from the "Mississippi lime" in Scott and Morgan Counties. The remainder was from two wells each in Clay and Fentress Counties. Thirty million cubic feet of gas was marketed off the lease in Morgan County and about 10 million cubic feet was produced in the Jamestown field in Fentress County. The production of oil by counties is shown in Table 1.

THE United Electric Coal Companies, operating large strip mines at various points in Illinois, pioneered in developing and perfecting the strip method of mining coal by use of large shovels and drag-lines. Coal stripping was first started on the properties owned by this company near Danville, Ill., in 1885. The first mechanical' excavating machine used for the purpose was really a dredge minus the hull, which had been purchased from the Marion Steam Shovel Co. It was erected on a wood frame supported by wheels and was referred to as a dry-land dredge or stripping machine. Wood was used throughout in the construction of this primitive excavator, even for the boom which was 50 ft. long. A single-cylinder vertical steam engine furnished power to hoist the %-yd. dipper arid swing the boom. 400 cu. yd. of overburden moved in a day was a great record.

IN a paper published three years ago,' the term "silicic chemistry" was used for the first time to emphasize the increasing importance of the chemistry of silicon in science and technology. The development through which the colloid chemistry of siliceous matter has gone since then is in itself ample proof that the coining of this new term for this branch of colloid science was not presumptuous. Until quite recently, however, silicic chemistry concerned itself only with the composition and colloidal properties of natural and synthetic siliceous matter, but had not paid much attention to the genesis of this matter, particularly to that of the clay minerals. What is even more disturbing, particularly from an educational point of view, is the fact that neither mineralogy, geology, nor metallurgy has fully realized the important role colloidal phenomena must have played in the genesis of our planet and the formation of minerals generally speaking. Considering the importance of colloid chemistry today in the fields just mentioned, it is not surprising that the theories most agreed upon by geologists and mineralogists for the origin of clay minerals are not acceptable from a strictly colloid chemical point of view for the genesis of these most important and most abundant components of the earth. Of all the theories pertaining to the origin of clay minerals, those still most accepted by geologists and mineralogists are the "residual clay" and the "transported clay" theories.15 The former is based primarily on the assumption that the formation of clay minerals is the result of surface weathering of fresh rocks, or is due to the action of solutions. Taking the action of water on orthoclase as an example, the most recent ideas have been summarized by H. Jenny13 as follows:

Miscible displacenzent recovers all oil in the area contacted by the injected .fluid, whereas water or immiscible gas drives usually leave substantial amounts of oil as residual. However, the Door mobility ratios associated with a gas-driven miscible displacement cause the sweep pattern efficiency to be much lower than that obtained with water flooding. One way in which the sweep eficiency in a miscible displacement process can be increased is by decreasing the mobility behind the flooding front. This can be achieved by injecting water along with the gas which drives the miscible slug. This water reduces the relative permeability to gas in this area and thus lowers the total mobility. The main operating conditions for the simultaneous injection -vrocess are that a zone of gas exists between the miscible slug and the leading edge of the water and that a su,@cient amount of gas be injected with the water to form the pas volume which is being left in the water zone. Laboratory model studies have shown that the ultimate sweep pattern efficiency can be as high as 90 per cent for a five-spot flooding system. If gar alone is used as the driving medium an ultimate sweep-out efficiency of about 60 per cent would be obtained in the same system. I INTRODUCTION The miscible displacement processes are a step towards total oil recovery. Conventional gas or water drives usually leave 25 to 5.0 per cent of the oil as residual in the swept portion of the reservoir. This residual can be eliminated if the oil is driven by a fluid with which it is miscible. At some reservoir conditions natural gas will become miscible with the oil. This is the "high pressure gas process".' More often, the oil does not contain enough light hydrocarbons to cause the gas to become miscible with the oil at reasonable pressures. In these cases a small band of fluid which is miscible both with the oil and gas must be kept between them2. Less than 2 per cent of the reservoir volume of the slug material is needed to keep the displacement miscible. Both processes work in the same manner, recovering all of the oil in the portion of the reservoir contacted by the injected fluids. The only difference is the manner in which the miscibility between the oil and the injected gas is obtained. Previous publications have contained detailed descriptions of these processes.1,2,3,4 However, total displacement of the oil in the swept region does not guarantee an efficient recovery process. The amount of oil to be recovered is also determined by the fraction of the reservoir contacted by the flood. This fraction is largely determined by the mobilities of the fluids. (The fluid mobility is the permeability of the rock to that fluid divided by the fluid's viscosity, k/p). This. dependence of the fraction swept on the mobility ratio has been shown in previous studies. Fig. 1 shows the ultimate fraction swept in a five-spot system as a function of the mobility ratio. The small drawings show the location of the areas left unswept for two different mobility ratios. The ultimate fraction of the reservoir swept is here considered to be attained when the producing stream contains less than 5 per cent oil at reservoir conditions. THE GAS-DRIVEN MISCIBLE DISPLACEMENT Since there is no oil left in the swept region after miscible displacement the mobility in this region is very high. It is often 50 times the mobility in the unswept regions. This means that the fraction of the reservoir contacted by the injected fluid will be less for a gas-driven miscible displacement than for a conventional water or gas drive. For a five-spot injection system, water would contact the entire reservoir volume, and the low pressure gas would contact about 90 per cent of this volume, while a gas-driven miscible displacement would only contact about 65 per cent of the reservoir. This poor sweep efficiency often offsets the benefits obtained through miscible displacement. Fig. 2 shows what the recovery curves for the three processes might look like for a five-spot system. Diffusionless transformation in Au-Cd single crystals containing about 50 atomic pet Cd was investigated by means of X-ray analysis of the orientation relationships, electrical resistivity measurements, and motion picture studies of the movement of boundaries between the new and old phases during transformation. The nucleation of diffusionless transformation by imperfections and the generation of imperfections by diffusionless transformation were discussed. THAT connections exist between plastic deformation and diffusionless phase changes has long been recognized. Thus it is often possible to produce a diffusionless phase change in a temperature range, above that in which the change occurs spontaneously, by cold-working the initial phase. Certain aspects of the dislocation theory of the plastic deformation of crystalline solids also provide for a rather direct connection between the processes involved in plastic deformation and in diffusionless phase changes. Heidenreich and Shockleyl have pointed out that simple edge dislocations in f.c.c. metals are probably unstable, and that the more probable lattice imperfections, called extended edge dislocations, consist of two half dislocations separated by a distance of the order of magnitude of 100A. The region about two atomic planes thick between the half dislocations because of this stacking fault may be described as having the hexagonal close-packed structure. Presumably the stacking faults observed by Barrett" fter cold-working f.c.c. Cu-Si alloys resulted from the passage of such half dislocations through the lattice of the initial phase. It is now becoming clear that the development of a detailed theory of the atomic movements involved in diffusionless phase changes will require a consideration of the role played by lattice imperfections, just as such considerations are necessary to the understanding of plastic deformation mechanisms. This point of view has been recently set forth, for example, by Cohen, Machlin, and Paranjpe3 who pointed out the role which might be played by screw dislocations in nucleating diffusionless phase changes. The present paper reports on some aspects of the diffusionless phase change in single crystals of the beta phase alloy Au-Cd which serve to emphasize further the importance of lattice imperfections in diffusionless phase changes. The diffusionless phase change of Au-Cd possesses several remarkable features. One of these is that the interface between the high-temperature beta phase and the low-temperature orthorhombic phase typically moves with a low velocity, in contrast to the behavior observed in the transformation of austenite to martensite. Motion pictures of this slow interface motion have been prepared in the course of the work reported here. Another important feature of the Au-Cd transformation is the small amount of undercooling observed. The reverse transformation occurs on reheating to a temperature only 20" higher than the transformation temperature observed on cooling, and under some circumstances the hysteresis observed is substantially less than this. This narrow temperature range between transformation on heating and cooling is presumably in part a consequence of the fact that the transformation requires a lattice shear of only about 3". Finally, the orthorhombic product phase possesses unusual mechanical properties, as was first pointed out by olander' and Benedicks." After completion of the transformation on cooling the specimen can be severely deformed, yet on the release of load it springs back to its original shape in a rubber-like manner. Explanation of this phenomenon will require an understanding of the lattice imperfections in the orthorhombic structure and, correspondingly, of those in the initial body-centered cubic structure. Single crystals of Au-Cd alloy containing 47.5 and 49.0 atomic pct Cd were prepared from fine gold (99.95 pct purity) and chemically pure cadmium (99.99 pct purity) by melting the alloy in an evacuated and sealed fused quartz tubing and growing into single-crystal form by the Bridgman method. The Au-Cd alloy containing 47.5 atomic pct Cd undergoes a diffusionless transformation from an ordered body-centered cubic structure to an orthorhombic structure when it is cooled to about 60°C, while the reverse transformation takes place when the alloy is heated to about 80°C, according to electrical resistivity studies. The structures of these two phases have been studied by Blander,4 reinvestigated by Bystrom and Almin.e he lines of Debye photo-gram of powdered samples of Au-Cd alloy containing 47.5 atomic pct Cd prepared in this laboratory were identified and agreed fairly well with those of

The effects of hydrostatic pressures to 26 kbars on the micro structure of poly crystalline Cd, Zn, Bi, Sn, Zr, Mg, Cu, and Fe were examined. Pressure-induced microscopic plastic flow in the form of boundary migration, slip, multiple slip, or twinning has been observed either singly or in combination in cadmium, zinc, bismuth, and tin. No deformation was observed in zirconium, magnesium, copper, and iron. The occurrence of such deformation, in terms of its intensity and initiation pressure, relates directly to the degree of anisotropy in the linear compressibility. Pressure cycling does not significantly affect the residual tensile properties of a zinc alloy which exhibits pressure-induced deformation similar to that of Pure zinc. CLASSICAL elastic theory predicts that a superim-posed hydrostatic pressure will not induce shear stresses in an ideal material. Thus, in the case of homogeneous and isotropic materials plastic flow will not occur as a result of pressure exposure, regardless of the magnitude of the pressure, unless some form of phase transformation or permanent density change takes place. However, real materials, such as metals, often vary considerably from the condition of homogeneity and isotropy. For this reason, Vu and johannin' examined and observed hydrostatic pressure-induced microscopic deformation in polycrystalline cadmium and, zinc, but not in aluminum, to pressures of 9 kbars and indicated that its occurrence is related to anisotropy in the linear compressibility. In addition, Davidson and omaan' have reported pressure-induced deformation in polycrystalline bismuth below the 1-11 transformation pressure. It becomes apparent then that under certain conditions hydrostatic pressure can induce localized internal shear stresses in some metals of sufficient magnitude to cause plastic flow. In this work, eight pure single-phase metals of different lattice structures and degrees of elastic anisotropy were examined after pressure exposures of up to 26 kbars in order to establish the conditions under which such deformation occurs and the type of deformation as a function of pressure. IN reviewing the aerial cameras produced in different countries, it becomes apparent that in nearly all of them an attempt has been made to secure the greatest possible angle of view. This angle, of course, is determined by the objective. The objectives most commonly in use in aerial cameras have a maximum angle of 65°. The objective developed for this new Zeiss camera combines freedom from distortion and brilliant definition, with an angle of 95°. Aerial mapping, it is claimed, has been placed on a different economic basis, and new possibilities presented, par-ticularly in connection with automatic stereoscopic plotting instruments, to which some short references are made. One way of enlarging the angle of view is to couple several instruments with their axes convergent, thereby producing a multilens camera. Typi-cal of cameras of this sort in the United States is the Bagley four-lens camera, which later was developed into the five-lens camera (T3-A) of the U. S. Air Corps. More recently, in order to get away from the unfavorable Maltese cross image field of the five-lens camera, and to obtain a more practical form, two five-lens cameras were combined. By using them in tandem and rotating them by 45° relatively to each other, a ten-lens camera was produced, covering an octagonal ground area, with a total angle of view of 140°. Similar designs have been evolved in other countries. In all of them, however, a number of difficulties have arisen, quite apart from their large weight and high cost. Because of their complex mechanism, numerous shutters and magazines, and the high precision with which these parts must be interadjusted and synchronized, these cameras are far from dependable. Moreover, a multilens camera by itself does not yet constitute a complete outfit for producing pictures suitable for photogrammetric survey. Because all the component pictures, except the central one, are obliques, it is always necessary to employ rectifying apparatus which transforms the marginal views to the perspective of the central one. Most igneous rocks, and particularly those of the basic type, contain relatively high percentages of magnetite and other iron oxides, which give them moderately high magnetic susceptibilities and make them responsible for an important percentage of the magnetic anomalies observed during the course of geophysical surveys by the magnetic method. The irregular form and high susceptibility of the igneous rocks make them readily polarizable and the position and strength of the magnetic poles formed are not always explicable by theoretical calculations of anomalies due to certain assumed forms in the normal magnetic field of the area under study. During the last four years our field work has permitted us to make detailed observations of anomalies due to igneous rocks in all the states of south Brazil. The form and position of the igneous rock at some places were fairly accurately known, which made it possible to calculate theoretical anomalies and compare them with the observed data. Some of the data we obtained have been published and additional cases are now awaiting publication. In this paper, we will present a few specific cases where the geology is moderately well known and which we believe to be of considerable value as representing typical magnetic anomalies in the south magnetic hemisphere, where the inclination of the magnetic field is very low. Although the vertical intensity is negative in the Southern Hemisphere, we have adopted the convention of plotting increase in intensity (negative) as a positive anomaly; i.e., above the x axis. This convention facilitates comparison with anomalies in the north.

Sponsored by the Utah Section of AIME, the 1960 Annual Rocky Mountain Minerals Conference brought more than 500 members of the mineral industry to the conference rooms of the Newhouse Hotel in Salt Lake City during the period October 5 to October 7. Under the overall supervision of J. M. Ehrhorn, general chairman, and H. E. Wright, assistant general chairman, the Conference offered 14 papers of technical interest in four sessions during the first two days, and it culminated in the Exploration Symposium held on the morning of October 7. The opening session of the Conference, meeting on the morning of October 5, heard R. P. Work, utility engineer of the Mountain Fuel Supply Co., discuss the growth and economic factors related to the use of natural gas in Utah. In his paper entitled Natural Gas Market In Utah, Mr. Work emphasized the very good prospects of natural gas serving almost all parts of that state. He mentioned that recently the El Paso pipeline, built to serve the Pacific Northwest with gas from Texas, has permitted natural gas to be available to Eastern Utah, and a tentatively planned pipeline from Green River, Wyo. to Southern California will bring natural gas to the central and southeast areas of the state.

INTRODUCTION SEVERAL years ago the writer was connected with the Mint and Assay Service of the Federal Government as Assistant Assayer at the-Salt Lake Assay Office. At that time cyanide bars formed approximately half of the bullion purchased by that office. Disagreement in valuation between the producer and the office was not infrequent and to a lesser extent between the Assay Office and the Mint, this latter issue being soon obviated, however, by adopting uniform methods of sampling the bars. A nice problem seemed to offer itself for research and the writer began a series of experiments which were soon terminated, however, by his going into other work, and which he regrets have not since been completed. The results attained may suggest lines of approach to this problem and are, therefore, offered in this article. Frederick P. Dewey, Assayer of the Mint Service, U. S. Treasury, has had abundant opportunity to study this phase of metallurgy, and has published several articles relative thereto.1 In the last article cited Dewey quotes analyses of cyanide bullion similar in content to that with which the writer worked, and which show some of the variations met with. In the discussion of these papers,2 comparison has been made in terms of copper bullion, but to the writer this seems of questionable value. Copper bullion may resemble silver bullion, but its similarity to, gold bullion with little or no silver content is another thing. The freezing-point diagram of Roozeboom, reproduced on page 881 of the discussion cited, is for the gold-silver series as stated. Most igneous rocks, and particularly those of the basic type, contain relatively high percentages of magnetite and other iron oxides, which give them moderately high magnetic susceptibilities and make them responsible for an important percentage of the magnetic anomalies observed during the course of geophysical surveys by the magnetic method. The irregular form and high susceptibility of the igneous rocks make them readily polarizable and the position and strength of the magnetic poles formed are not always explicable by theoretical calculations of anomalies due to certain assumed forms in the normal magnetic field of the area under study. During the last four years our field work has permitted us to make detailed observations of anomalies due to igneous rocks in all the states of south Brazil. The form and position of the igneous rock at some places were fairly accurately known, which made it possible to calculate theoretical anomalies and compare them with the observed data. Some of the data we obtained have been published and additional cases are now awaiting publication. In this paper, we will present a few specific cases where the geology is moderately well known and which we believe to be of considerable value as representing typical magnetic anomalies in the south magnetic hemisphere, where the inclination of the magnetic field is very low. Although the vertical intensity is negative in the Southern Hemisphere, we have adopted the convention of plotting increase in intensity (negative) as a positive anomaly; i.e., above the x axis. This convention facilitates comparison with anomalies in the north.

INTRODUCTION THE senior author of this paper, while in Colorado on other official business, made a trip to the Cripple Creek gold-mining district to get more data than are at present available regarding the composition of the gas that issues from the rock into the mines of the district. This was done at the suggestion of George S. Rice, Chief Mining Engineer of the Bureau of Mines. There are many questions of interest and importance in connection with the ventilation of the mines in the Cripple Creek district, such as the menace to life and mining of a suffocating gas entering the mines from the rock, the danger due to powder smoke (from blasting operations), and danger of continued inhalation of rock dust by the miners. This report confines itself to the first problem, the gas from the rock, and principally to one phase of this question, the composition of the gas and its effects on men and lights. A more thorough study of this and other ventilation problems is planned. That the, rock gas is a real menace is shown by the fact that miners (variously estimated from 25 to 50 by different persons interviewed) have been killed by it in the 25 years that mining has been vigorously carried on at Cripple Creek. Many men have had narrow escapes from death, some of them having been incapacitated for days. In addition, much loss of time results because at certain periods of the year or on certain days it is impossible to enter some workings. No true conception of the Park City mining district can be obtained without first giving consideration to the part it has played as a consistent producer of mineral wealth. Its position in this regard is almost unique in the annals of a lead silver camp. For over fifty years it has been a continuous producer of lead and silver and for twenty years it has added to the world's supply of zinc. Few camps with its productive history are so little known to the mining fraternity for the reason that its life has never been punctuated by periods of "boom" which serve to attract general attention, neither has it been the field of operation for promoters who temporarily focus attention upon their scene of action. Its history is one of legitimate mining operations. These were at first carried on by a number of smaller companies. A period of consolidation followed and at the present time the entire production of the camp is in the hands of two major companies and one smaller company. These are flanked by a number of prospecting properties, which are at this time actively engaged in the search for ores and later events will doubtless put some of them in the producing class.

ALTHOUGH many persons know that a lot of type metal and etchings are used in the U. S. Government Printing Office few would expect to find anything on metals in the annual report of the Public Printer, George H. Carter. Yet the report for the fiscal year ended June 30, 1931, contains many interesting items. For example: Among the 57,500,000 lb. of materials and supplies delivered to the printing office was little new metal, but the metal in circulation is 6,000,000 to 7,000,000 lb. In the cost of production $31,523 is charged against metal, nearly one-third for salaries and wages. In miscellaneous sales were $4,696 from waste metal and $1,147 from waste gold (from books). Electrotype and stereotype covered 11,438,314 sq. in. The vaults and storage rooms contain 1,700,000 plates and 130,000 pages of type containing 4,600,000 lb. of metal valued at $275,000. In what was known as the Congressional Globe vault were 46,000 stereotype plates; these were salvaged by remelting for other platemaking service. The Congressional Record superseded the Congressional Globe in 1873.)

IN view of the increasing importance of sintering in the beneficiation of iron ores preparatory to their reduction in the blast furnace, the writer believes the time is opportune for an up-to-date, though brief, discussion of the general principles of sintering, as well as a discussion of some of the recent improvements and mechanical developments that have been achieved in this industry, its present trend and future possibilities. Sintering may be defined as the agglomeration of fine mineral particles into a porous mass by incipient fusion caused by heat produced by combustion within the mass itself. Its first successful application, in connection with the treatment of lead sulphide ores, was known as blast roasting. In this process the lead ore was given a preliminary roasting in a reverberatory furnace, then the incandescent mass was placed in a pot with a grate and an updraft was applied. It was soon discovered that much better results were obtained by cooling the ore, moistening it, and placing it upon an incandescent layer of fuel previously placed upon a grate, and then applying the updraft blast of air until the charge was converted into a more or less agglomerated mass. The fuel was sulphur and the process one of desulphurization, which was the principal result desired. The application of downdraft to blast roasting brought about tremendous results; the principal one of which was that an air blast of high pressure could be passed through a layer of ore deposited on a grate, or on a grate covered by a layer of coarse porous material, without disturbing the particles of which the layer is composed. The air current is compelled to filter through the pores of the charge, whereas if the same pressure applied to the top surface of the charge with downdraft were applied to the bottom of the charge with updraft, the charge would be completely blown off the grate. Another result of reversing the draft was that a flame could readily be applied to the top surface of the charge for igniting purposes. Broadly speaking, sintering is an oxidizing or burning process, therefore the volume of air passing through the charge is the all-important factor. The air must pass through with sufficient rapidity to produce the necessary heat, and if sufficiently rapid the combustion will take place
