That America's great coal deposits eventually will be our principal source of liquid as well as solid fuels is generally accepted. Moreover, the day when synthetic oil from coal will begin to supplement our petroleum supplies does not appear to be far off. The American petroleum industry has not spared effort or expenditure in its attempt to keep pace with the demand for oil, and recent production has exceeded expectations. However, the rapidly rising demand for liquid fuels plus the increasing difficulty of finding and developing the new oil needed even to maintain present production rates make it highly unlikely that oil from domestic wells can fully meet future oil requirements. Therefore, it appears that one or more of the following courses must be followed: 1. Curtail oil consumption. 2. Incr ase imports. 3. Develop new sources such as synthetic liquid fuels. All three courses may well be needed, as it is doubtful that any one of the three alternatives alone can satisfactorily solve the problem indicated by the prevailing trend in demand for oil. Curtailment of oil consumption is not a constructive policy, except where oil is being wasted or coal can be readily substituted as in stationary steam plants. Reduced oil supplies for most uses will curb our economic advancement and, in addition to inconveniencing consumers, will have a pronounced adverse effect on American industry. The oil-burner-manufacturing industry already has been dealt a hard blow. Shipments in the first 5 months of 1948 decreased 70 pct from those in the same period in 1947.1 The effect of a similar cut in the automobile industry can be imagined. A severe prolonged shortage of gasoline could seriously disturb our present economic well-being. It might be pointed out also that even the prospect of a shortage or lack of assurance for the future can discourage buyers of equipment, as occurred in the case of oil burners. An increase in our imports of oil seems to be a necessary expedient for the immediate future. Its advantages are that it will require a minimum of manpower and steel in a time of critical shortages and will conserve domestic reserves. Any major dependence upon foreign sources for our oil supplies should be avoided, however. Other nations are increasing their oil consumption more rapidly percentagewise than the United States and eventually will compete with us for the not unlimited world supplies. In peacetime, foreign countries might restrict ship- ments of oil to this country or impose exhorbitant prices. In the event of war, there is serious danger that such sources would be cut off, and American-developed oil fields overseas might even be used against us. Although synthetic fuels cannot relieve any oil shortage that might develop within the next year or two, an immediate start toward a substantial synthetics industry to supplement petroleum not only could help relieve shortages several years hence but also would help establish the much needed "know-how" for large-scale production. By assuring ample future supplies, such a start would permit sound planning by industries dependent upon oil and maintain or restore the confidence of prospective customers for oil-con-suming equipment. If it is agreed that domestic production of crude oil cannot be expected to meet future domestic demands, that oil rationing in general is undesirable. and that too great dependence on foreign oil should be avoided—and the weight of the evidence supports such conclusions—it is inescapable that commercial synthetic fuel production should be developed to supplement domestic petroleum supplies, which, of course, will furnish the bulk of our requirements for yean to come. Sources of Synthetic Oil The three principal sources of synthetic oil are natural gas, oil shale, and coal. A commercial plant using natural gas is under construction, and expansion of this industry is expected.

The behavior of large bubbles in the size range 4 to 25 cm3, rising through molten silver, has been studied. It was found that rising velocities were equivalent to those in aqueous systems of low viscosity. Mass transfer coefficients for oxygen bubbles dissolving in silver were found to be 0.036 ± 0.007 cm sec-1, being close to those predicted for transfer through the front surface of the spherical cap bubble only. It is suggested that the surface active nature of oxygen in silver could account for the relatively low coefficients obtained. MANY metallurgical processes involve interactions between gas bubbles and liquids. Examples include the removal of carbon monoxide in Open Hearth Steelmak-ing, the removal of sulfur by blowing air through copper matte during converting, and the removal of hydrogen from steel during vacuum degassing or inert gas flushing. The steps involved in such refining processes include; transport of the dissolved species to the bubble interface, adsorption and chemical reaction of the species at the interface, desorption of product molecules from the interface, and transport of product gas into the bulk gas phase of the bubble. It has been concluded1 that all the interfacial steps involved proceed so rapidly at steelmaking temperatures that transport of the solutes, present in the metal, become the important rate controlling factors provided nucleation phenomena are not restrictive. The O-Ag system was chosen for the investigation into gas bubble-molten metal interactions due to the relatively high solubility of oxygen that enables rates of oxygen transfer to be measured from changes in bubble volume. Other advantages of this system include the absence of a stable oxide phase at an oxygen pressure of 1 atm and the relatively low melting point of the metal which permits the use of a metallic container, providing that it is resistant to oxidation. In those metallurgical processes where bubbles have an important influence, bubble volumes are usually greater than 5 cm3. For this reason the present study relates specifically to single large bubbles of oxygen rising in silver. These bubbles adopt the characteristic spherical cap shape similar to that shown in Fig. 1 for a 30 cc bubble rising in water. After an initial investigation to determine the velocities of inert (nitrogen) bubbles rising in molten silver, experiments were carried out with oxygen and the rates of mass transfer between the oxygen bubbles and the silver were measured. EXPERIMENTAL Apparatus. The apparatus, Fig. 2, for containing molten silver, was constructed from "Nimonic 75" Alloy (75 pet Ni, 20 pet Cr, 5 pet Fe, Mn) and provided for the release of single bubbles from an hemispherical cup, situated at the bottom of the column. The cup was turned by translating the rotation of the drive shaft through 90 deg. This was accomplished by the use of a bevelled gear system, and a smooth drive was provided by the lubricating action of the silver on the gears. Since reliable high temperature seals at 1000°C were found to be impracticable, the filling and drive shaft tubes were extended outside the 3.5 kw resistance wire tube furnace, where connections were made using easily accessible O-ring seals. The apparatus remained gas tight to the atmosphere at pressure differentials far in excess of those used. The filling tube was connected via a small bore tube to the differential pressure transducer. Gas could be bubbled into the inverted cup from two i-in. tubes which passed down the inside of the column to preheat the gas. The temperature of the silver was maintained at 1020°C during all experiments. Measurement of Bubble Volume. In order to calculate mass transfer rates, it was necessary to obtain a continuous record of the bubble's volume during its passage through the column of molten silver. The method adopted for measuring the bubble volume involved closing off the top gas space to the atmosphere prior to each experiment, and recording the variation in gage pressure of this space during the formation and rise of the bubble. Peripheral water injection has been underway in the Sholem Alechem Fault Block "A" Unit, Stephens County, Okla., since 1955. In the engineering planning of the flood, it was recognized that maintenance of pressure in the large, dry gas caps was vitally necessary to prevent the loss of an estimated 27 million bbl of oil through saturation of the gas caps by the oil banks moving updip on the peripheral flood pattern. The development of an abundant, low-cost water supply and the rising cost of makeup-gas purchases indicated that gas-cap control by water injection was desirable from an economic standpoint, provided an eflective water barrier could be placed without premature water breakthrough into downdip oil producers. A laboratory model scaled to the existing reservoir conditions was comtructed to evaluate the feasibility of gas-cap water injection. Model studies indicated that (I) water injected at the edge of the gar-oil contact would form a continuous barrier between the oil and gas zones, and (2) water would advance uniformly downdip without segregation due to gravity effects provided a specified, minimum water-injection rate was maintained. The model test results also indicated that it was not necessary to fill the gas cap completely with water. Water injection at the edge of one of the gas caps was initiated in March, 1958, to field test gas-cap water injection. Water breakthrough occurred at a downstruc-ture producing well in April, 1959, after approximately 2.5 million bbl of water had been injected into the gas cap. This was the volume calculated to be required to form the barrier between the oil zone and gas cap. This performance indicates that prevention of oil encroachment into dry gas caps in a peripheral water flood by water injection at the gas-oil contact appears practical and that the model studies provided a valid prediction of field performance. INTRODUCTION The Sholem Alechem Fault Block "A" Sims Sand Unit was one of the fist major waterflood projects in Oklahoma to utilize a peripheral injection pattern. Design of control measures to minimize oil encroachment into the large crestal gas caps was one of the greatest single problems during engineering planning of this flood. Engineering studies indicated that saturation of the gas caps with oil displaced by the peripheral water flood could result in a loss of about 27 million bbl of oil, or over one-half the estimated waterflood recovery. This estimate was based on a residual oil saturation after water flooding of 35 per cent pore volume, compared to the negligible oil saturation initially in the gas caps. The Sholem Alechem Springer field, located in Stephens County, Okla., is an elongated anticline with structural dips varying from 400 to 1,000 ft/mile. The structure contains numerous faults, some of which are sealing. The portion of the field considered in this paper is Fault Block "A", which is the largest of the five major fault segments in the field. A map of the unit is shown on Fig. 1. The unit is bounded on the east and west by major sealing faults, on the north by a water-oil contact and to the south by a deterioration of sand development. Two domes, each having gas caps, exist in the unit and are separated by a north-south fault as shown in Fig. 1. The sands being flooded are the Sims sand members of the Springer series of early Pennsylvanian age. The Sims sands average over 100 ft in thickness in Fault Block "A" and have a porosity of approximately 19 per cent. Core permeabilities average 160 md, with interstitial water saturation of about 23 per cent pore volume. Three different zones can be correlated over most of the area. However, they are commingled in most of the producing wells. The two upper zones, designated as First and Second Sims, are the most important. Both the First and Second Sims have gas caps in the east dome, while only the First Sims has a gas cap in the west dome. These gas caps, whose limits are also shown on Fig. 1, initially occupied nearly 11 per cent of the total reservoir volume. The major concern of this paper is the control of the two gas caps in the First Sims sand. Fig. 2 is a cross section, to scale, across the east dome of this formation. Notable features are the relatively shallow dip, the deterioration of the First Sims sand on the south side of the gas cap and the water-oil contact on the northern edge. The formation dip at the gas-oil contact in this cross section is approximately 5".

The effect of 1ow-temperature stabilization anneals on the structure of the 0 phase Au-Cd alloys and on the diffusionless transformations observed in these alloys was examined by X-yay diffraction techniques. A phase separation in the ß-phase region was proposed to account for the experimenta1 results. The effects of quenching from elevated temperatures on the transformation behavior of these alloys were shown to be consistent with the proposed mechanism. IT has been shown that the high-temperature ß phase (CsCl structure) of the Au-Cd alloy system transforms to a phase having an orthorhombic (D2) ß&apos; structurel1-3 for compositions near 47.5 at. pct Cd and a tetragonal (4/m, m, m) ß" structure* in the vicinity of 50.0 at. pct Cd. Both transformations are diffusionless, crystallographically reversible, and occur on cooling at about 60° and 30°C respectively. The temperature interval from the beginning to the end of the transformation is of the order of 5°C in each case. Although the transformations are normally athermal, some of them have been reported to occur isothermally.= wechsler6,7 has shown that the effects of quenching a 49.0 at. pct Cd alloy from elevated temperatures are consistent with the retention of a nonequilibrium number of lattice vacancies. Annealing of these quench effects results in a broadening of the X-ray reflections.8 After a suitable quench, the 47.5 at. pct Cd alloy transforms to a phase having not the p&apos; orthorhombic structure but another structure which has properties similar to that of the ß" tetragonal structure.5.9 This change in the type of transformation has also been obtained after long anneals in the ß-phase region at about 70oC10 The present investigation was primarily concerned with the structural changes accompanying the above transformation phenomena. The change in transformation product and accompanying physical changes during an anneal in the ß phase have been termed stabilization effects. Experimental Procedure —The results reported in this investigation were obtained with the use of a Norelco diffractometer fitted with a temperature-controlled cryostat. The specimen temperature was controlled to better than ± 0.l°C during the measurements. CrKa radiation monochromated electronically with the use of a scintillation counter and pulse height analyzer was utilized. Specimens containing 47.5 and 50.0 at. pct Cd were prepared by sintering filings obtained from homogenized ingots of the proper alloy composition. (Gold of 99.999 pct purity and cadmium of 99.98 pct purity were used). All heat treatments were carried out with the specimens capsulated in vacuum ( < 10 % mm Hg) or in a He-H gas mixture. The quenching technique used in these experiments was to drop the pyrex capsule which contained the specimen from the annealing furnace into water, the temperature of which was controlled. The pyrex capsule shattered on contacting the water resulting in a relatively rapid quench. After the heat treatment, the specimens were mounted in the diffractometer and were left undisturbed in the diffractometer specimen holder during each sequence of measurements. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS A) Low-Temperature Annealing—The transformations which were considered "normal" for these alloys were those obtained athermally during furnace cooling at approximately 50°C per hr after an elevated temperature anneal. Under these experimental conditions, the specimens were observed to transform to phases having structures whose diffraction patterns could be indexed as the ß&apos; orthorhombic structure for the 47.5 at. pct Cd and as the 0" tetragonal structure for the 50.0 at. pct Cd alloys. The transformation temperatures on cooling were approximately 60" and 30°C, respectively. Under the "normal" conditions both transformations were observed to go to completion, i.e., the entire volume of the ß phase was transformed to the product phase. In some specimens an extremely weak ß 110 reflection was observed at 20°C indicating that a small amount of retained ß was present. The effect of low-temperature annealing on the nature of the diffusionless transformations was examined for the 47.5 and 50.0 at, pct Cd alloy. The specimens were annealed in evacuated capsules at temperatures in the vicinity of 600°C (as specified in Table I) for 24 hr and were then cooled to 100°C at a rate of 50°C per hr. The specimens were then removed from the capsules and mounted in the diffractometer without allowing the specimen temperature to drop below 80°C. Annealing at the low temperatures was accomplished in the diffractometer by means of the cryostat which was mounted around the specimen. During the low-temperature anneals the lattice parameter, integral breadth of the reflections, and ratios of the integrated intensities of the fundamental and super lattice reflections for the 0 cubic phase were periodically determined. After annealing for the required time, the specimens were slowly cooled in the diffractometer and the diffraction patterns were recorded as a function of temperature. The specimens were cooled until the phase transformations were completed, following which the specimens were heated and diffraction

The insufficiencies of our mineral resources are becoming well known, and the national political conscience seems to be troubled at last by our dependence upon mineral commodities which must come from other lands. This realization places increased responsibility upon the industrial, educational, and governmental groups whose task it will be to solve the problems of mineral supply. As we all know, from the time that man first sought mineral deposits until recent years, prospectors have been largely responsible for mineral discoveries. Today the era of the prospector is almost over. The human ants that have literally examined all accessible outcrops and have tested the gravels of nearly all stream beds in the United States have left undiscovered few worthwhile mineral deposits within the scope of their recognition. The pages in the history of mineral exploration are now being turned from the era of the surface prospect to the era of the hidden de- posit.

CIVILIZATION&apos;S PROGRESS, which has multiplied man&apos;s comforts, conveniences, a n d happiness, is based upon the extensive employment of natural minerals and sources of energy. Mineral resources are basic factors in modern economic development, machine industry, international trade and world power. A survey of mineral consumption shows that the United States leads the world in the production and consumption of energy materials, of metals, and of the large and diverse array of earth materials that fall in the nonmetallic mineral group. The use of nonrnetallic minerals exceeded both the metals and the fuels in the long period before the industrial age, but it is only in the last two decades that consumption of non- metals has kept pace with and approximated in value the output of metals. Although the data of production in the first half of the last century are meager and fragmentary, the record of the past fifty years-the period of most rapid growth-is available, and reveals an astounding growth.

PLANS are well matured for the joint meeting of the Coal Division and the Ohio Section of the Institute at Columbus, Ohio, Oct. 27 and 28, at which a large attendance is expected. The proceedings for a day and a half will be devoted largely to the uses of coal, the program providing for two technical sessions in the auditorium of Battelle Memorial Institute (505 King Ave.) on Friday, and various plant inspec¬tions on Saturday morning. By way of diversion on Saturday afternoon arrangements have been made for attendance en bloc at the football game between Ohio State and Northwestern, 100 seats having been reserved for the game at $2.40 each-as long as they last. An inventory of the high lights of the meeting would be incomplete without reference to the informal banquet at the Deshler-Wallick hotel on Friday evening, for which Eli T. Conner, Chairman of the Coal Division, is down for a talk, and Howard N. Eavenson, Vice-president of the Institute, will be the principal speaker. The program in detail is as follows:

The Oklahoma City Wilcox sand, discovered on March 26, 1930, has produced 394 million barrels of crude oil and 819 billion cubic feet of natural gas as of July I, 1941. The 100,000-bbl. wells, pressures of 2600 lb. per sq. in., and flows of "Wilcox" sand caused exciting moments in the early life of the field. Today the reservoir is substantially at atmospheric pressure and produccs 75,000 bbl. of crude oil daily through 466 pumping wells. Early estimates of the initial crude-oil content of the "Wilcox" sand1 indicated that about 600 million barrels of crude oil would remain after the pumping wells ceased to produce economically. The Oklahoma City Wilcox Secondary Recovery Association was organized in March 1939, to study the possibilities of recovering a portion of this oil. Only a very brief summary of the information available can be presented in a paper of this nature. Some simplifications and generalizations are necessary to give the over-all picture in SO short a space and statements made may not apply to a specific well or small area. Since the area under consideration by the Association is that north of the south line of section 22-11-3, some information will be presented for areas A, B, C, 1, 2, 3 and part of 4 of Fig. 2, and some will be for the entire Wilcox zone west of the fault. This paper is essentially an abstract of an engineering report made by A. D. Small, B. T. Murphree, M. C. Sons and the author for the Oklahoma City Wilcox Secondary Recovery Association on Sept. 5, 1940. Some information is taken from a report to the Association by C. V. Sidwell on March I, 1940, and some data are from a recent report by A. D. Small. It gives a brief history of the Wilcox zone, estimates of the initial oil contents of the reservoir, present conditions in the reservoir, and probable results from several programs of "secondary recovery." History of Wilcox Zone The Wilcox sand lies on the flank of the general structure, as shown by cross section of Fig. I2,3,4 and areal map of Fig. 2. The sand is of Ordovician age and is composed of well assorted, rounded sand grains with no apparent cementing material. The loose texture of the sand is shown by the enormous quantities of sand production from the wells and from the soft cores. The productive sand varies from zero thickness on the east to 220 ft. maximum and to zero thickness on the west because of water. The development of the pool4 as dependent upon drilling restrictions within the city limits, which accounts for the spacing of drilling operations listed in Table I by years. In 1931, areas I through 7 of Fig. 2 were open for drilling with the exception of some west-edge properties, and all wells drilled before Feb. I, 1935, were in this portion of the field. Nearly all wells drilled from 1933 to 1037 were in areas A, B and C. Since 1939, the newly drilled wells have gradually enlarged the producing area toward the west in the northern portion.

The behavior of particulate non-metallic materials in moving contact with smooth surfaces is of interest and concern to manufacturers and users of abrasives, of fillers, and of pigments alike. The theoretical aspects of the subject have been treated to considerable extent in the literature, and correlatic,ns are available that attempt to relate various methods of hardness determination." 2 The particle size and friability are characteristics of the abrasive that are not related to the smooth surface. The hardness, on the other hand, may be visualized as relative to that of the smooth surface. In a study of abrasive action, the role that hardness, per se, plays is a complicated one. For it is necessary to compare the "hardness" of the abrasive, usually a non-metallic, with that of the smooth surface, generally a metal. Hardness of non-metallics is defined as resistance to scratch and is almost universally described with respect to the Mohs scale.3 Minerals have been rated by Mohs numerically from the softest (talc = 1) to the hardest (diamond = 10). By definition, a mineral has a designated hardness when it is scratched by the standard that is numerically just above it on the scale; and conversely, when it scratches the standard that is just below it. Hardness of metals. however.. implies resistance to indentation, a property that has been measured by a number of methods. In fact, the indentation hardnesses of the standard minerals on the hlohs scale have been determined by the Rockwell tester. Reproduced below are two versions of this correlation. &apos;A conversion chart, prepared by Wilson Mechanical Instruments Division of American Chain and Cable Co., merely gives the conversion from Rockwell to Knoop hardness. The relation between Knoop indentation hardness and Mohs scale has been reported by G. S. Smith — A New Scale of Hardness, The Engineer, Aug. 26. 1949. G. F. Kinney in Engineerin Properties and Aplications of Plastics reports the Rockwell hardness of the minerals directly in the Mohs scale. The question immediately arises as to whether this relation is valid when applied in reverse; namely,

Mechanical science is severely tested by the demands of the iron manufacture for the varied apparatus needed to transport and to treat raw materials and products. Water has long been a favorite means of transmitting pressure for such purposes, because of its own incompressibility. Further advances in its use are the more to be expected, since mechanical improvements have steadily tended to overcome the difficulties formerly encountered in the employment of great hydraulic pressures. So long as the pressure is not higher than that which requires for plungers, etc., only ordinary stuffing-boxes, with hemp or other similar packing, the necessary arrangements for the production and transmission of the water-pressure without leakage are very simple. But when this limit (which is, for most purposes, 50 kilos to the square centimeter) is exceeded, new conditions of construction arise, which are met in various ways, and which justify a primary division of hydraulic presses into low-pressure and high-pressure respectively. The former are used in lifting and moving weights, and employ pressures as high (in extreme cases) as 100 kilos per square centimeter; but at this point the friction between piston and hemp-packing is so great that the use of cup-leathers is already preferable. Beyond 100 kilos it becomes a necessity. The range of practicable tight packing which follows is considerable, extending to about 1000 kilos; but "high pressure" in practice is from 100 to 600 kilos, and it is to this that the present paper applies. Hydraulic transmission at high pressure usually claims consideration in case the solid mechanism, such as levers, cams, screws, and gear-wheels, would have to be too large, would involve too much friction, or could not be suitably adapted to the speed-requirements of the working-tools. In many investigations of the performance of petroleum reservoirs the assumption is made that the liquid, if below its bubble-point pressure, is at all times in equilibrium with gas. On the other hand, observations by numerous investigators have indicated that gas-liquid systems including hydrocarbon systems, may exhibit supersaturation to the extent of many hundred psi in the laboratory. Up to the present, there has been no reliable data on which ti judge the actual extent of supersaturation under conditions approaching those existing in petroleum reservoirs. The work reported here deals with observations and measurements on mixtures of methane and kerosene in the presence of silica and calcite crystals. Bubbles were observed to form on crystal-hydrocarbon surfaces in preference to the glass-hydrocarbon interface or to the body of the liquid. Statistically, it was found that the number of bubbles formed per second per square centimeter of crystal surface was a function of the supersaturation only. and the function was evaluated graphically. Supersaturations were observed up to 770 psi, under which condition bubbles formed quickly and with considerable violence. With decreasing degrees of supersaturation, the frequency of bubble formation became less, until at 30 psi supersaturation and lower, no bubbles were observed to form, even though the observation at 30 psi was continued for 138 hours. It was found that silica and calcite crystals had identical effects, within experimental error, in accelerating the formation of bubbles, and that small amounts of water and crude oil had no effect on the results. It is shown that the maximum supersaturation that can exist in a reservoir may be calculated from the data presented and from the area of the rock surface. It is also shown that the number of bubbles formed in the reservoir, in order of magni- tude, may be calculated for any rate of pressure decline imposed on the reservoir by production. The bearing of the number and distribution of bubbles on reservoir performance is discussed. INTRODUCTION A liquid system is supersaturated with gas when the amount of gas dissolved exceeds that corresponding to equilibrium at the existing pressure and temperature. The degree of super-saturation may be conveniently expressed as the difference between the bubble-point of the mixture and the prevailing pressure. Thus, if a mixture having a bubble-point of 1,000 psi at a given temperature exists in single liquid phase at 700 psi at the same temperature. it is supersaturated to the extent of 300 psi. There are many examples of high supersaturations, mostly in aqueous solutions, reported in the literature. Thus, Kenrick, Wismer and Wyatt1 showed that water may be saturated with oxygen, nitrogen or carbon dioxide at 100 atmospheres, and the pressure reduced to one atmosphere without producing bubbles immediately. When liquids are in a state of tension, they may be considered as supersaturated at least to the extent of the tension. The tensile strength of water has been reported as 30 atmospheres by Meyer,1 60 atmospheres bv Budgett. 30 to 50 atmospheres by Temperley and Chambers,4,5 200 atmospheres by Dixon6. and 223 atmospheres by Briggs.7 Vincent8,9 determined the tensile strength of a mineral oil as 45 psi. Gardescu1 maintained pressures for short times in a model reservoir at 115 psi below the bubble-point. It should be noted that the high supersaturations observed were obtained on systems carefully purified to remove particles or surfaces which might promote the formation of bubble; These "nuclei" were considered as contaminants which interfered with the determination of a property of the liquid. A petrographic and chemical investigation was conducted to determine the occurrence and distribution of the organic and inorganic forms of sulfur in various size and specific gravity fractions of a high volatile, A-rank, Pittsburgh seam coal. The investigation was conducted to aid in the resolution of the problem of how metallurgical coke of lower sulfur content can be produced from high sulfur coals. The Pittsburgh raw coal contains about 2.4% S in two dominant forms: pyritic and organic. Pyritic sulfur constitutes about 57% of the total sulfur in the raw coal and occurs in macroscopic and microscopic-size particles. A plant cleaning process mechanically separates between 50 and 60% of the pyritic sulfur, mainly the macroscopic particles. The organic sulfur constitutes 41% of the total sulfur in the raw coal and 55% of the sulfur in the washed coal. Thus, organic sulfur is not reduced by physical methods of separation. Organic sulfur occurs in all the coal entities, but in general, increases as the exinoid content of the coal increases. In this study, it was found that carbonizing certain selected low gravity coal fractions containing an average of 0.45% pyritic sulfur and 1.01% organic sulfur produced cokes containing an average of 0.22% pyritic sulfur and 0.91% organic sulfur. However, the organic sulfur in the coke is probably derived in part from the heating of pyrite in the presence of carbon. Thus, the total sulfur in the coal carbonized is the most important factor affecting the sulfur content of the coke produced. Concentration of microscopic pyritic and organic sulfur in the middling-type coal indicates the necessity for rejecting as much of this material as is economically feasible. Most of the sulfur introduced into the blast furnace originates from the coke. Although the sulfur content of the hot metal can be controlled by the addition of flux, the flux used restricts the productivity of the furnace by displacing ore and requires first to be smelted; therefore, low sulfur coke is highly desirable. Since the sulfur content of coke is dependent upon the sulfur content of the coals from which the coke is produced, low sulfur coals are required to produce low sulfur coke. In the western Pennsylvania area, large quantities of good coking coal are available from the Pittsburgh seam, but this coal unfortunately contains relatively large quantities of sulfur. To provide information that might be useful in reducing the sulfur content of this coal in the cleaning process, an investigation was conducted to determine the physical and chemical forms in which this sulfur occurs and with what petrographic components it might be associated. The Pittsburgh seam coal, like most other coals, contains two dominant forms of sulfur: one occurs as the minerals pyrite and/or marcasite and is referred to as pyritic sulfur; the other is combined with the coal substance and is called organic sulfur. Pyritic sulfur is amenable to physical methods of separation, whereas organic sulfur is not. Pyritic sulfur particles must be freed from the surrounding coal if they are to be removed in the washing process. Generally, this requires crushing; the required degree of crushing being a function of the size and distribution of the pyrite. The present investigation was conducted to 1) determine the size, distribution and association of sulfur-bearing minerals in the coal and 2) to determine whether the organic sulfur has a preferential association with specific coal entities. If a preferential association exists, this knowledge may be useful in devising a method for organic sulfur reduction. In addition, a study was made to determine the extent to which pyritic and organic forms of sulfur in the coal contribute to the sulfur in the coke produced from this coal. A representative 3%-ton sample of raw coal was crushed to —3 in. and screened into square-mesh sizes: 3 to 1 in., 1 to % in., % to % in., % in. to 10 mesh, 10 to 35 mesh, and 35 to 200 mesh. Separate samples of the -200-mesh fraction and the all-size composite were also collected. AS with Phil Kraft, referred to on this page last month, travel has always held a great fascination for Raymond Frank Baker and for that reason he determined to become a geologist. He had heard that geologists travel and that was what he wanted to do. Now as chief geologist for The Texas Co. his early wish has been fulfilled-he spends almost one third of his time journeying&apos; from one oil field to another. Mr. Baker was born in New Haven, Conn., on Jan. 11, 1892, and went through the public schools in New Britain. A stalwart New Englander, he attended Yale and in 1912 received a degree in civil engineering. For a year following this he worked as a civil engineer for the New York Central Railroad, but his early urge to travel widely could not be satisfied here. So in 1913 he re-entered Yale and until 1916 studied mining and economic geology. He had a little taste of field work, which later became so enjoyable to him, in the summer of 1915 when he worked with the U. S. Geological Survey as a geologic aid. In 1916 he made his first contact with The Texas Co. when he entered their Tulsa office as a geologist. This early career was interrupted by service in the

In planning and designing of underground excavations and construction, it is of considerable importance that the stresses and displacements in the rock mass subjected to arbitrary sequences of unloading and loading be within allowable limits. For determination of the stress and displacement fields, the usual approach is to treat the rock as an elastic material and to apply the principles of the theory of elasticity. However, analytic solutions are available only for a limited class of problems of simple geometry and idealized material properties. Nonhomogeneity and anisotropy of material coupled with complex geometrical configuration and initial stress fields that are almost always preexistent in rock masses at great depths, render the problem intractable by analytical methods. Approximate solution techniques using numerical procedures have, therefore, to be resorted to. The finite element method as applied to plane stress analysis was introduced by Clough.1 It has developed into a powerful tool for the analysis of various field problems in structural and continuum mechanics. The method is well documented in the literature2-6 and, therefore, its historical development will not be discussed here. Wilson&apos;s analysis of the plane stress/strain problem has found extensive use in the area of soil and rock mechanics including stresses around underground openings; stresses and displacements in dams, foundations, etc.7-11 In his analysis of the axisymmetric solid,3 Wilson proposed a procedure to allow for certain cases of nonlinear material properties. During the years 1942-1934, about 125 New England deposits were mined for sheet and punch mica, and many others were briefly prospected. During this period the Geological Survey, United States Department of the Interior, carried on detailcd studies of the deposits and the pegmatite bodies that contain them. The primary purpose of the studies was to provide geological information that would contribute toward efficient mine development and operation. The studies were aimed directly at practical production problems. Detailed maps showing the structure of the deposits were prepared, and geological findings were closely correlated with data on specific yields and costs of mining and processing. The result is information that permits a reasonably accurate appraisal of the mica deposits of New England and the mining industry that they support. At a time when the future of the industry is in doubt, it seems desirable to submit this appraisal for consideration. Domestic mica deposits supply only a small fraction of the country&apos;s needs in normal times? for only the richest domestic deposits can compete with the low-cost mines of India and Brazil. However, the possibility that this country may be cut off from its supplies in time of war gives domestic deposits an importance much greater than their peacetime production would imply. New England supplied about 22 per cent of domestic output in 1943 and 1944, the peak years of wartime production. Its actual contribution to the war effort was greater, for the proportion of sheet mica of high quality in the New England product is higher than the average for domestic mica. The data analyzed below were collected for the Geological Survey by D. M. Larra-bee, A. H. McNair, J. J. Page, V. E. Shai-nin, G. W. Stewart, and the co-authors of this paper. The first stage of operation at a deposit was normally opencut mining. Drilling was done mostly with jackhammers powered by portable compressors driven by gasoline engines. Muck was shoveled by hand into buckets with a capacity of 45 to 35 ton and commonly hoisted by derrick to a dump adjacent to the cut. As operations were carried to greater depth, and the tram sition to underground mining was made, these methods were modified to a degree depending largely on the attitude of the deposit mined. Several investigators, mainly concerned with the mechanical properties of the alloys, have studied the so-called aluminum bronzes after various quenching and reheating treatments. Of these works, perhaps the most complete is that of Bouldoires, who studied changes of length, electrical conductivity, thermoelectric force, hardness and micro-structure on tempering quenched alloys containing 5 to 20 per cent of aluminum, although the work of Carpenter and Edwards,² Curry13 Greenwood,4 Braesco,5 Matsuda,67 Grard8 and others has added much to our knowledge of the changes occurring during tempering. The so-called acicular ß decomposes on tempering at temperatures between 350" C. and the eutectoid, giving rise to a Widmanstätten structure of a needles in a matrix of 6 or fine a + 6, associated with an increase in hardness and almost complete loss of ductility. Matsuda studied the eutectoid transformation by means of dilatation and electrical conductivity measurements during cooling at different rates. He found that on cooling at the rate of 10" C. per minute there was a decrease in electrical resistance and in length instead of the usual increase which occurred with slow rates of cooling. On tempering the rapidly cooled samples, the increase commenced at about 400" C. and at 520" C. the resistance and length had reached the equilibrium values. These peculiarities he accounted for as being due to a transitional phase ß&apos; being formed, ß&apos; having an electrical resistance and volume less than either ß or a + 6.
