Recrystallization of aluminum single crystals after plastic extension is carefully studied in relation to the structure of the deformed matrix. The shapes of the new grains are analyzed with regard to slip planes and to the presence or absence of deformation bands. A mechanism by which the orientations of the grains are related to the parent lattice is described. EXPERIMENTS previously reported&apos; have been extended to develop some of the characteristics of the new crystals which are formed on annealing axially strained crystals whose deformational characteristics had been documented with special care. Thus, the presence of deformation bands affects the growth contours of the crystals, some of the strained crystals produced single crystals anew, and some, polycrystals, on annealing, while others merely "recovered" or "polygonalized" after the 600°C annealing treatment generally adopted in these tests. In the matter of orientational relationships between new crystals and the strained matrix, the present experiments have added little to previous experience, which had demonstrated great variety in the range of orientations encountered and no simple theory or correlation. For example, there has been ample evidence for the predominance in various face-centered cubic metals of a favored orientational relationship; viz., a rotation of 30° to 40° around a <1ll> axis, between grains growing in a matrix with a strong single orientation texture and the matrix itself.&apos;-&apos; This reorientation has been interpreted by various investigators in support of both the "oriented nucleation" and the "oriented growth" hypothesis. In the case of axially extended single crystals of aluminum, no general relationship, such as the one stated above, can be used to correlate the orientations of the recrystallized grains with that of the original crystal. Thus, Carpenter and Elama and Burgers and Basart7 were content to assume that the orientational relationships so developed were random in nature. Mathewson, however, in the Campbell Lecture of 1943 "rgued on the basis of <112> slip that a complex strain, chiefly characterized by rotation around a variable axis in the slip plane combined with a principal rotation around the pole of the slip plane, could be responsible for such devious relationships. Nevertheless, owing to the limited data now available dealing with orientational relationships between new grains and the single crystals strained in tension from which they have recrystallized, no adequate examination of the above generalization could be made. Here, there is the disturbing preliminary condition that any desired orientational relationship may be expressed by means of two rotations about mutually perpendicular axes, so the process lacks a certain critical flavor and any successful choice of axes meeting certain theoretical requirements could be replaced by another differently selected pair. With this reservation clearly in mind the process of double rotations, as previously indicated, was used to relate the orientations of the single crystals which grew out of the strained single crystalline matrix and was construed as certain evidence in favor of the theory of incongruent shearing action proposed by Mathewsons as a necessary element in the (111) slip process with close-packed metals. THE year 1937 started off most hopefully for the metal industry but the prices for nonferrous metals declined after reaching a peak in the first quarter. E. & M. J. average prices for March were: -electrolytic copper f.o.b. refinery for domestic delivery 15.775c., lead 7.19c., and zinc 7.38c. There was the usual talk of shortages and the accompanying peak in the market prices of securities of producing companies. In retrospect it now appears that this was the peak of general security prices as well and of most commodity prices. On Dec. 1 copper was back to 11c., lead to 5c., and zinc to 5.5c. At the same time metal security prices had fallen to less than 40 per cent of their March highs. This has not been a purely domestic phenomenon. Metal prices have followed a similar course in London, in spite of the fact that in all three metals a tariff wall separates the domestic market from the foreign. There is nothing in the record to suggest that planning has so far had any stabilizing effect on prices. It is doubtful whether anybody will he found to claim credit for the planning. Strong evidence supports the conclusion that domestic demand for these and the other metals has been dammed back by the uncertainties confronting those who are considering long term construction commitments. This is particularly true with the public utilities, who are the largest consumers of copper and lead. If the plans were designed to maintain employment rather than to maintain political control of the Government, it would appear that they should be discarded. The course of the steel industry has been followed so closely in the press that no comment is necessary to indicate its similarity.

Application of surface tension measurements has been made to molten silicates in order to determine the effect of sulphur upon the surface tensions of synthetic blast furnace slags. In melts with the same molar ratios of AI2O3 + SiO2 to the basic oxides BaO, CaO, and MgO, the surface tensions increase in the order of oxides listed. Sulphur lowers the surface tensions of the basic BaO, basic CaO, acid BaO, acid CaO, and acid MgO slags in that order; and the concentration of excess sulphur at the slag surface increases in this same order of slags. The rate and amount of desulphurization of iron by these slags is favored by a low excess surface sulphur in the slag. IN a previous paper,1 the authors discussed the applications of surface tension measurements of molten silicates to problems of metallurgical interest. Of major importance is the aid that such studies lend to forming a working concept of slag structure. Since the ability of a slag to desulphurize metal depends strongly upon its composition,2"4 fundamental information about the structural differences between various slags which contain sulphur should aid the development of better desulphurizing media. For that reason, the present investigation concerns the effect of sulphur upon the surface tensions of synthetic blast furnace slags. Experimental Procedure , The maximum bubble-pressure method was used to measure the surface tensions of synthetic blast furnace slags in the temperature range 1300° to 1600°C. ONE of the properties of copper, which has done much to give it its present prominent place among the useful metals, is its electrical conductivity, a property which has now become the chief criterion of &apos;the value of the commerical product. In pursuance of that distinctively American principle that, 1&apos; the best is none too good," metal of the highest conductivity is usually called for even where such extreme purity is of no advantage, for instance, in the making of brass and other alloys. The average brass-founder feels nervous unless his copper is so very pure that it shows a conductivity of 99 or 100 per cent., while the character of the zinc used is usually overlooked in his anxiety. Electrolytic refining has made it possible to produce copper of a&apos; very high degree of purity, the metallic impurities averaging but a few thousandths of 1 per cent.; oxygen, usually present in the form of cuprous oxide, bringing the total up to about a tenth of 1 per cent. The published data bearing upon the relationship between chemical purity and electrical conductivity is, however, very scant,&apos; nearly all the work that has been done having dealt with alloys carrying considerable quantities of the foreign elements. In this paper I have brought together the results of experiments extending over a period of several years that have been carried out with the idea of determining the amount of various elements which would lower the conductivity 3 or 4 per cent.-a series of impure coppers rather than alloys. Observations of dislocations in zinc using Berg-Barrett X-ray micrography confirm the validity of a dislocation etch for (1010) surfaces. A technique for measurement of the depth in which dislocations can be imaged in X-ray micrographs is given. This depth on (0001) surfaces of zinc was found to be 2.5 µ using a (1013) reflection and CoKa radiation. BUCHANAN and Reed-Hill (B & RH) have recently questioned the ability of a dislocation etch to reveal all of the basal dislocations which intersect (1010) surfaces in annealed zinc crystals.&apos; This etch was developed by Brandt, Adams, and Vreeland who conducted a number of different experiments to check its ability to reveal dislocations.2,3 B & RH prepared (0001) foil specimens for transmission electron microscopy from annealed crystals and observed dislocation densities of about l08 cm per cu cm in the foils, while the etch indicated densities of the order of l04 cm per cu cm in their annealed crystals. As this etch has been used in a number of studies of dislocations in zinc, it is of considerable importance to reassess its validity in the light of the B & RH results. The X-ray work reported here was undertaken to check the ability of the etch to reveal dislocation intersections on (1070) surfaces of zinc. The X-ray technique was chosen for this check because it could be applied to the as-grown crystals with a relatively small amount of specimen preparation. We believe that the possibility of accidental deformation in preparation of the bulk specimens is considerably less than that for thin foil specimens suitable for transmission electron microscopy. Unfortunately, basal dislocations are not visible on Berg-Barrett topo-graphs of (1010) surfaces, which are the surfaces on which the etch is most effective. Therefore, a one-to-one correspondence between the etch and X-ray observations could not be made. Basal dislocations near (0001) surfaces have been observed by Schultz and Armstrong4 using the Berg-Barrett technique, but they did not report the as-grown dislocation density observed in their crystals. We have applied the X-ray technique in this study to surfaces oriented from 1 to 2 deg of the (0001) to determine the basal dislocation density, and have compared this density with that observed using the etch on a (1070) plane of the same crystal. The X-ray observations permit determination of the depth in which basal dislocations can be observed under the diffracting conditions used. SPECIMEN PREPARATION High purity zinc crystals are very soft, so a good deal of care must be exercised in the preparation of observation surfaces. As-grown crystals approximately 2.5 cm in diam and 20 cm long were acid cut into 1.25 cm cubes. A thin slab was cleaved from an (0001) surface to produce an accurately oriented reference surface on the specimen. Some of the cubes were examined in the as-machined condition while some were annealed in argon at 410°C for 2 hr. Heating and cooling rates were less than 2°C per min. Some of the specimens were scratched on a (0001) surface with a razor blade to produce fresh dislocations. Approximately 2 mm of material was acid lapped from one face of a cube to produce a surface oriented between 1 and 2 deg from the basal plane and parallel to the [1210] direction. A (1070) surface was also acid lapped. The lap used a 1 to 3 pct solution of HN03 in water to saturate a soft cloth which was backed by a stainless steel plate. The cloth was moved over the crystal surface at a rate of 20 cm per sec while a normal force of about 4 g was maintained between the cloth and the specimen. As-lapped surfaces were examined as were surfaces which were chemically and electrolytically polished after lapping. The small angle between a lapped surface and the (0001) plane was measured to 0.1 deg using a Unitron microgoniometer microscope (the cleaved surface was used as a reference in this measurement). The microscope was modified so that the intensity of reflected light could be continuously monitored on a meter. This modification produced nearly a ten-fold increase in the reproduceability of orientation readings. OBSERVATIONS The Unitron Microgoniometer observations indicated that the lapped surfaces had a terraced structure with the terraces quite rounded and spaced about 0.1 mm in the [1010] direction. The maximum change in slope between terraces was 0.25 deg, indicating a terrace height of about 0.1 µ. A Unitron measurement of the average angle between (0001) and a lapped surface was checked by micrometer measurement of the specimen and found to agree within 0.1 deg. The Berg-Barrett micrographs using (1013) reflections and CoKa radiation5 revealed subboundaries, short dislocation segments, spirals, and loops near the surfaces which were oriented from 1 to 2 deg of the (0001). Micrographs of surfaces prepared by lapping appeared very similar to those of the chemically and electrolytically polished surfaces. The loops and spirals were not extinct in (1013) or (0002) reflections, indicating that they have a nonbasal Burgers vector. Extinctions of the short, straight dislocations indicated that they belonged to an (0001)(1210) system. Laboratory experiments were conducted to investigate the cutting of a single diamond on limestone and shale under simulated down-hole conditions. A high-pressure chamber was modified by adding a rock-rotating device so that planing tests could be run. Weight on the diamond, diamond geometry and differential pressure across the face of the rock were varied. It was found that (I) high differential pressure reduced the volume of rock cut by the diamond at a given bit weight by strengthening the rock and changing the mode of failure; (2) a finely powdered rock left in the bottom of the grooves reduced the volume cut by as much as 50 percent; and (3) orientation of a single diamond about the axis of a drill point had considerable influence on diamond cutting efficiency. INTRODUCTION Diamond bits consist of many diamonds held in a matrix provided with water courses for fluid passage to clean, cool and lubricate the diamonds as they drill formation. Each diamond contributes its share to the overall effectiveness of a bit, but a lack of understanding of the performance of a single diamond has hampered efforts to engineer improvements in diamond bits. The need for those improvements prompted this study. This paper describes the findings of a laboratory investigation of the outting action of a single diamond where the differential pressure between the wdlbore and formation, diamond geometry and vertical force on the diamond were independently varied. The tests were conducted in a pressure chamber that provided relative horizontal motion (planing) between a rock and diamond under simulated down-hole pressure conditions. EQUIPMENT HIGH-PRESSURE CHAMBER WITH ROTATING DEVICE The high-pressure chamber used in previous rock mechanics studies&apos; was modified for this study by addition of a rock-rotating device. The modified chamber (Fig. 1) differs from the old chamber in that the rock can be rotated to provide relative horizontal movement between the rock and the penetrator which may be a small element of a diamond or a drag bit. In this study the penetrator was a single diamond. The rock sample holder inside the chamber is mounted on a thrust bearing and is connected to the external drive mechanism by a stem that passes through two seal elements. The seal elements are needed to allow formation pressure to enter the bottom of the rock sample through a small hole in the stem. The Kapseal seal elements (Tefion boots backed by O-rings) provide low friction (hand free) even at differentials of 5,000 psi. The drive mechanism is a variable-speed transmission with a speed range from 0 to 30 rpm and an output torque of 2,800 in.-lb. A right-angle-drive gear box couples the drive to the stem. The new design has two independent pressure systems (formation and borehole) to simulate down-hole rock stress environment. Formation pressure enters from the bottom of the rock through a 6-in. diameter area, and borehole pressure acts over the remaining surface. A 14-in. layer of zero fluid loss oil-base mud poured over the top of the rock and an O-ring seal on bottom allow a differential between the borehole and formation pressures. Bayol 50 was used as the hydraulic fluid in the chamber. The differentials reported here were obtained by elevating the borehole pressure while keeping the formation pressure at zero.

WHEN mixed with common cast steel in quantities ranging from 11 to 13 ½ per cent. and properly treated, manganese increases the ductility of the metal and adds greatly to its toughness and resistance to abrasive action, which properties comprise the distinctive characteristics that make manganese steel so valuable for many purposes at the present time. Manganese steel has been manufactured for about 26 years. .It was first made in a small way in England and subsequently produced in the United States in 1892. At present the manganese-steel foundries of this country have an annual capacity of about 60,000 tons and most of the growth has occurred within the past 10 years. In the early days of the industry it was impracticable to make manganese castings weighing over a few thousand pounds, but at present crusher heads, rolling-mill pinions, and similar castings weighing up to 30,000 lb. each are produced, and it does not appear that the limit of weight has been reached by a considerable margin. Manganese steel is similar in analysis to ordinary first-class converter metal except that it is high in carbon and contains from 11 to 13 ½ per cent. of manganese. From one standpoint manganese steel is similar to malleable iron in that the casting as it comes out of the sand is hard and brittle and must be made ductile by a heat-treating process. The heat treatment is an essential part of the process of making manganese-steel castings and must be properly carried out to secure satisfactory results. The necessity for heat treatment limits the thickness of sections which may be made of manganese steel. Originally the annealing depth was comparatively small, but researches carried on during the past few years have resulted in an increase in the thickness of section up to 5 ½ in., which it is possible to treat successfully. Large castings are cored out to a minimum thickness of 5 ½ in., thus not only eliminating some of the internal stresses which are invariably set up in a very thick casting, but also reducing the weight and inertia of the piece, an

10.3-1. Introduction. Equipment replacement or maintenance is of major concern to every company today. It can be the difference between an efficient and profitable operation or an inefficient and struggling one. Mining equipment, as everyone knows, will not last forever. Some equipment becomes obsolete before it wears out while some may be doing its intended job, yet not economically. It is a major problem for management to make the decision as to whether a piece of equipment should be repaired or replaced. There are numerous approaches to this problem; using formulas, charts, and graphs. These would be very good if all conditions were stable. Since conditions and requirements are constantly changing, an accurate observation cannot be derived from a set formula. A formula does, however, serve as a reminder to include most of the items that should be considered when evaluating old and new equipment. In the field of mining there are several questions which enter into the reasoning that are difficult to put into an equation. Some of these are: 1. Will the present equipment produce the required output of the mine, or an increase if necessary? 2. Are reserves adequate to support the purchase of new equipment? 3. Can the old equipment be repaired to efficiently continue the mining operation? 4. What is the stability of future markets for the product? Depreciation rate, or the write-off life, is a factor that can directly effect decisions on replacement. If the initial life expectancy is too long and the price of equipment is not written off when discarded, then the original investment has not been recovered. If the write-off time is too short, then the equipment is written off before replacement is even considered. In this case, the depreciation accrual is usually used to finance some other phase of the operation. In view of the increasing prices, the amount of depreciation fund is generally too small for much incentive to replace an older unit

VESTA No. 4 and 5 mines supply most of the high volatile coal required for Jones & Laughlin&apos;s byproduct coke plants. Until 1944 all coal produced in these mines was loaded by hand. Pressure to mechanize at Vesta was brought on by the manpower shortage in World War 11, and in 1943 a decision was made to change to mechanical loading. It was the opinion of those concerned that by use of selective mining the coal would be clean enough to be processed by the existing preparation plants. At that time coal cleaning at Jones & Laughlin consisted of hand picking the larger sizes at the mine tipples and wet washing at plants located at the Pittsburgh and Aliquippa Works. A typical section of the Pittsburgh seam as it occurs at Vesta is shown in Fig. 1. The 14 to 16 in. of drawslate immediately over the coal is too soft to be used for roof and must be taken down, leaving the rooster coal just above for roof. In selective mining an attempt is made to mine the coal under the drawslate first and then load out the drawslate separately as refuse. In full seam mining slate and coal are shot down at the same time and loaded out. Mechanical loading at Vesta created new problems. It was found that selective mining, even when carefully applied, increased the refuse in the raw coal to such an extent that the washers at the mills were unable to handle it. Large tonnages of refuse were being transported, a reject disposal problem was created, and good metallurgical coal was being loaded out and lost. In addition, the selective method handicapped operation of the loading machines. Fig. 2 shows how the ash content of the raw coal increased as mechanization proceeded at No. 5 mine. New Preparation Plant: After an exhaustive study of this situation by J & L management, is was decided that a preparation plant should be constructed at the mines, capable of handling full seam mined coal and large enough to process full production of both No. 4 and No. 5 mines. It was decided that from the standpoint of inside operation and haulage the new plant should be located as near as possible to the old No. 5 tipple on the Monongahela River near Vestaburg. Full seam mining at Vesta could be expected to produce a tremendous volume of refuse along with the coal, since 14 to 16 in. of slate would be mined with an average 78 in. of coal. Disposal of this refuse required serious consideration in selecting a plant site. The only area near Vestaburg large enough for disposal of the plant refuse was across the Monongahela River at LaBelle. Ample space was available here, and construction at this location would not interfere with operation at the No. 5 tipple. It had been noted over the years that the sulfur content of the coal produced at Vesta was gradually increasing, and there was every indication that this increase could be expected to continue as the mines developed further from the river. It was decided to construct a three-part separation plant with complete blending facilities to produce both metallurgical and steam coal. In this system an attempt is made to reduce the sulfur in the metallurgical coal in a secondary cleaning process. Construction of the new preparation plant got under way early in 1947 and continued until the spring of 1950. The plant was designed to handle 2400 tph of raw coal containing 30 to 35 pct refuse. Cost of outside buildings and equipment was about $14 million. Total cost of the plant, together with improvements and changes made at this time, was approximately $21 million.

The Division Chairman is an individual endowed with a broad perspective of the ferrous metal industry he result of his earlier experiences as a successful operating man in the working and management of blast furnaces and his later experiences as an engineering-consulting executive concerned with the design and erection of and steel works throughout the world. William A. Haven was born to iron steel in the Pittsburgh district on ;. 1, 1888, and in due time--or in 1909 graduated from Penn State with a Bachelor degree in industrial chemistry.

PERHAPS the most important event f or exploration geophysics in 1940 was the publication of three textbooks : "Geophysical Prospecting for Oil," by L. L. Nettleton ; "Exploration Geophysics," by John J. Jakosky; and "Geophysical Exploration," by C. A. Heiland. The literature had grown so bulky, and such a long time had elapsed since the publication of the texts by Ambronn and Eve, that treatises covering exploration geophysics comprehensively in all its branches and giving literature and patent references were sorely needed. This need has been satisfied admirably in these textbooks, and geophysicists owe the authors a debt of gratitude. In 1940, geophysics came of age. A conference on applied nuclear physics was held at Massachusetts Institute of Technology from Oct. 28 to Nov. 2. Several papers on geophysical subjects were presented at this meeting. Geophysical activity has decreased in all parts of the world except perhaps in Canada where, under the stimulus of the war&apos;s increased demands, prospecting for oil has increased. However, even there the war has had a seriously adverse effect on prospecting for ores and upon the promotion of new properties, although activity in producing and near-producing mines has been stimulated.

The effects of changes in short-range order on some thermodynamic, electrical, and mechanical properties of the silver-rich Ag-Mg solid solutions have been investigated. The heats of formation at 273°K of several alloys after two different thermal treatments were measured by liquid metal solution calorimetry. Their electrical resistivities were measured at temperatures ranging from 4° to 773°k. Tensile tests and microhard-ness measurements were carried out at room temperature. An effective short-range order parameter and an effective interaction energy are defined. The measured changes in the properties are interpreted in terms of these quantities. The short-range order parameter is evaluated separately from calorimetric and X-ray data; the results are in fair agreement. Increasing short-range order lowers the resistivity of- the silver-rich Ag-Mg alloys but does not measurably affect the temperature dependence of the resistivity. Short-range order increases the yield stress of these alloys but does not affect the ultimate tensile stress. Changes in the effective short-range order parameter independently obtained from measured changes in the heat of formation, resistivity, and yield stress are in fair agreement. THE thermodynamic, electrical, and mechanical properties of solid solutions have been investigated as functions of composition in many alloy systems, but the effects of configurational variables, such as short-range or long-range order, on these properties have received much less attention. The silver-rich terminal solid solutions in the system Ag-Mg are well-suited for the investigation of the effects of order. The composition of these solid solutions may be varied over a range extending to about 27 at. pct Mg.1 Appreciable short-range ordering is likely to take place in these solid solutions; the degree of short-range order can be varied by suitable thermal treatments. In the alloy Ag3Mg long-range ordering is possible.2 This paper is primarily concerned with the effects of short-range order on some thermodynamic, electrical, and mechanical properties of the silver-rich Ag-Mg solid solutions.-The long-range ordering transition is the subject of a concurrent paper.3 1) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES 1.1) Preparation of Specimens. Ag-Mg alloys containing up to 26.4 at. pct Mg were prepared by melting 99.99 pct pure Ag (obtained from Baker Chemical Co.) and 99.99 pct pure Mg (obtained from Eastman Chemi- cal Co. or Johnson Mathey & Co.) in graphite crucibles under molten potassium chloride. The solidified ingots were homogenized at 823°K for 10 days in evacuated Vycor capsules. A surface layer 6 in. thick was then removed by machining. The ingots were swaged into rods (2.5 mm diam) which were drawn into wires (1.0 mm diam). The wire specimens were annealed at 773°K for 24 hr in vacuum and either quenched into iced brine or cooled to room temperature over a period of 15 days. The average grain diameter (obtained from the linear intercepts) was about 0.1 mm. 1.2) Calorimetry. The heats of formation of the alloys were measured in a tin solution calorimeter as the difference in the heat effects of alternate additions of samples of an alloy and the mechanical mixture of its component elements. The additions were made from 273°K to the bath at about 623°K. The heat effect on addition of the alloys was approximately 5.5 kcal per g-atom. The procedure and the method of calculation have been described.4 1.3) X-Ray Diffraction. Short-range order parameters of two alloys were calculated from diffuse scattering intensities,&apos; obtained with briquettes made from powdered specimens. A GE-XRD 5 diffractometer with filtered copper radiation was used. The absolute intensities were based on calibrations with paraffin. 1.4) Resistivity Measurements. The electrical resistivities were measured by a potentiometric method in which the potential drop across the specimen was compared with that across a standard resistance. For measurements below room temperature, the specimens were immersed in liquid helium (4°K), liquid nitrogen (78°K), dry ice and trichloroethylene (195°K), or ice and water (273°K). Measurements above room temperature were made on specimens held in a furnace under helium or in vacuum. The resistivity measurements were reproducible to ±0.5 pct or less. 1.5) Mechanical Tests. Tensile tests were carried out at room temperature with a Tinius-Olsen XY elec-tromatic Universal testing machine. Wire specimens (nominal gage length 1 in.) were used. The strain was measured with an extensometer, which had a sensitivity of 4 x 10-5; the strain rate was 10-3 min-1. Microhard-ness measurements were made with a square-pyramid indenter and a 100-g load.11 2) RESULTS AND DISCUSSION All measurements were made on two parallel sets of specimens, one quenched and the other slowly cooled from 773°K. The reported values are the averages of at least three measurements. In the range of magnesium concentration substantially below that of the composition Ag3Mg, quenched alloys have less short-range order than slowly cooled alloys. Although the Lansing-Kansas City groups One one of the more important producing horizons of Central Kansas, exploitation has been hindered by inability to consistently identify and correlate the various productive intervals. A study of gamma ray-neutron logs and core data indicates that definite zones exist which are related to production and which may be generally correlated over an appreciable portion of Central Kansas. A suggested system of zoning and nomenclature is developed and illustrated, along with examples of its specific application in overall evaluation and in development of zonal production characteristics. General adoption of the suggested system should aid appreciably in the future development of commercial Lansing-Kansas City production in Central Kansas. It is probable that similar systems might be developed for other regions where production is obtained from various uncorrelated and unnamed zones in thick pay intervals. GENERALIZED GEOLOGY OF CENTRAL KANSAS The most important large subsurface feature in Central Kansas regarding oil production is the Barton Arch, which is part of the Central Kansas uplift. The Barton Arch is a buried ridge of Pre-Cambrian granite running northwest-southeast, near which the majority of Central Kansas oil fields have been found. To the northeast of this arch, the granite dips sharply into the Salina Basin and similar basin areas to the west and south are termed the Hugoton Embayment and Anadarko Basin, respectively. This report deals Primarily with the region of the Central Kansas Uplift and its southwestern flank. Fig. 1 indicates the general location of subsurface structural features along with the oil and gas fields of central Kansas. Above basal granite lies the Cambro-Ordovician Arbuckle Dolomite which is the principal oil producing zone in Central Kansas. This formation, as well as those higher in the section, reflects the general underlying granite structure; however, the Arbuckle top is an erosional surface and most oil producing structures are probably topographic hills. Formations above the Arbuckle in ascending order may include those of the Ordovician, Silurian, Devonian, Mississippian, Pennsylvanian, and Permian periods as well as certain recent sediments. As the Barton Arch is approached, those formations below the Pennsylvanian and above the Arbuckle tend to pinch out until Pennsylvanian rocks, which include the Lansing-Kansas City groups, rest directly upon the Arbuckle. The Arbuckle itself is also completely eroded away at points on the Arch, but is up to 600 ft thick only 20 to 30 miles down dip. Formations of the Pennsylvanian system vary considerably in thickness but probably average about 1,000 ft as an overall total. The more commonly known oil productive zones are the Tarkio, Topeka, Toronto (Dodge), Lansing-Kansas City and Marmaton. Of these, the Lansing-Kansas City, which varies from about 200 ft to 400 ft in thickness, is the most important, since its areal frequency of oil production is exceeded only by that of the Arbuckle. Most Pennsylvanian rocks in Central Kansas were deposited in shallow seas which alternately covered, then retreated from the land. This resulted in recurring cycles of thin beds which cover relatively large areas. Small surface deformations during the period of deposition also caused variations in the type material deposited and its thickness. The old laboratory at the School of Mines was among the notoriously bad ones, being situated in apartments of the main collegebuildings not originally intended, and conspicuously unfit, for the use to which they were put; while, as in many of our schools and colleges, the assaying was done in the basement of the college. Prominent among the disadvantages of such an arrangement are insufficient light, poor ventilation, and little or no provision to carry off offensive gases. It is not my intention now to present a complete description of this building. I wish merely to call attention to a few points in its construction and equipment, which may prove of interest to those who contemplate erecting buildings for snch work, and who may be, as we were in this instance, limited as to funds. AN investigation of the phase relationships between the 6 phases of the uranium-molybdenum and uranium-titanium systems was conducted by studying alloys ranging in composition from uranium-31.5 at. pct Mo to uranium-34 at. pct Ti. A ternary cut showing these phase relationships is presented upon the basis of thermal-analysis data obtained and upon the basis of metallographic and X-ray examination of heat-treated and quenched specimens. Isothermal ternary sections, inferred from phase relationships determined between the two 6 phases, are presented for the uranium-molybdenum-titanium system. In the compositional range investigated, a y-ura-nium solid solution exists at elevated temperatures. At about 900°C the 6-U2Ti phase, with limited molybdenum solubility, forms. Epsilon, a molybdenum-titanium-rich solid solution appears at the same temperature and appears in all phase regions that exist below this temperature except in the terminal 6-phase regions. The y phase is stable to approximately 660°C in titanium-rich alloys; the y and 6-U,Ti phases decompose at this temperature to a uranium in a peritectoid reaction. The y phase in molybdenum-rich alloys of the ternary cut studied decomposes in an apparent eutectoid reaction, at about 593°C, to the 6-uranium-molyb-denum and a-uranium phases. The e phase while present, presumably plays a negligible role in these reactions. Titanium was found to markedly decrease the stability of retained y in these alloys. Age-hardening characteristics developed in titanium-contain ing uranium-molybdenum alloys quenched from 900°C and aged at 500°C are ascribed to decomposition of Y to the a and E phases. INTRODUCTION Alloys of uranium with molybdenum, titanium, and zirconium, respectively, are of great interest because of their potential use as reactor fuels. As a result, this interest extends to the constitution of these alloys, particularly in view of their uniqueness of constitution. In these systems, alone, among known uranium-alloy systems, an intermediate phase forms by direct decomposition of the high-temperature y-uranium phase. As a prelude to possible future alloy development, an investigation has been undertaken of the phase relationships that occur between the intermediate phases of these systems. These phase relationships have already been reported for the intermediate 6 phases of the uranium-zirconium and uranium-titanium systems.&apos; The results of an investigation of the phase relationships between the 6 phases of the uranium-molybdenum and uranium-titanium systems are reported here. The phase relationships that occur in the binary systems pertinent to this investigation are shown in Fig. 1. Phase nomenclature appearing throughout this report is as shown in these diagrams; the crystal structure of the phase is given in Table I. Isothermal salt bath annealing of 0.014-in. thick 3 pct Si-Fe sheet was conducted at temperatures ranging from 927" to 1260°C in order to investigate the grain-growth behavior. Within the temperature range studied normal grain growth did not take place; instead nucleated grain growth prevailed. The nucleation frequency was found to increase with the annealing temperature, with corresponding decrease in grain diameter of ultimate secondaries after long-time annealing. Large secondaries grown by low-temperature isothermal annealing are essentially of (110)[001] orientation, and the (110)[001] texture is strong. The relatively small secondaries grown by high-temperature isothermal annealing also have orientations near (110)[001] as an average but widely scattered; thus the amount of (110)[001] texture is found to decxease with isothermal annealing temperature. Grain growth and texture development at various annealing temperatures can be described by families of sigmoidal curves with the time axis. ThE cube-on-edge (110)[001] texture and predominating large secondaries in fully annealed 3 pct Si-Fe are customarily produced by a 1100°C annealing of a primary recrystallized sheet. On annealing the primary recrystallized sheet above the temperature at which secondary recrystalliza-tion starts May and turnbull&apos; have demonstrated that secondary grains decrease in size as the temperature is increased. The phenomenon was attributed to a decrease in the (G/N) ratio where G is the growth rate of secondary grains and N is their nucleation frequency. In addition, the growth of grains in orientations rather far from (110) [0011 occurred. The present investigation is devoted to detailed rate studies of the same phenomenon. Mi-crostructure, magnetic anisotropy, and texture data were obtained on strips of 3 pct Si-Fe isothermally annealed for various lengths of time in a BaC12 salt bath at temperatures ranging from 927&apos; to 1260°C. The texture results are reported elsewhere.2 EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Commercial 0.014-in. cold-rolled silicon-iron strip (3.16 pct Si), prepared by two stages of cold rolling with an intermediate short anneal, was given a decarburizing 3-min anneal at 800°C. Metallo- graphic studies indicated complete recrystallization. In order to provide a protective atmosphere and to obtain a rapid rise to an elevated temperature, a BaC12 and NaCl fused salt bath was used to heat samples isothermally at temperatures from 927" to 1260°C for various lengths of time. Torque magnetometer measurements were made on 1-in.-diam disc specimens before and after annealing, since magnetic torque curves supply information on textures and texture changes. Surface layers of the strip samples were polished and etched to reveal the grain structure. The diameters of grains were measured from micrographs at X100. The average value of diameters of matrix grains was established. Individual grains in the micrograph were cut out separately along grain boundaries. These grains were classified either as matrix grains or growth grains. The percent weight of growth grains in the cut-out patterns was reported as percent growth. Manv of the individual grains in the annealed samples were large enough to be X-rayed with a 5-mil beam for Lauegrams. Complete (110) pole figures were obtained for the primary recrystallized structure and short-time annealed structure with CoKa radiation at 30 kv in the back-reflection range, such as (220) for (110) poles, as described recently by Newkirk and ~ruce.~ Both the X-ray optics and the technique for pole figure differed slightly from those adapted previously.4

The world&apos;s largest steam-driven mine hoist, built by Nordberg Manufacturing Co. a half century ago, has become a major tourist attraction in Michigan&apos;s Upper Peninsula. The hoist, designed by company founder Bruno V. Nordberg, is located in the Quincy Mine Number Two, just north of Hancock. Nordberg began construction of the mammoth machine before World War I, but delayed completion until after the war. The hoist became operational in 1920 and continued running until the mine was shut down in 1931.
