THE need for more efficient utilization of labor in the metal-mining industry has been the subject of several recent editorials in the mining press, and one attractive possibility for such improvement lies in the designing of future milling plants particularly with economy of man-power in mind. We are accustomed to think of mill design as the selection and coordinated arrangement of process equipment, but if labor is to be efficiently utilized it must be given early consideration in planning the new mill. There are three good reasons for economizing in labor: (I) to reduce costs, not only in the form of wages but also in housing, hospital, welfare, and other obligations that a company accepts when a new man is added to the payroll; (2) to prepare for recurrent periods of manpower shortage, during which a well-designed plant can manage to get along with skeleton crews; (3) because a milling plant that must depend upon an inordinately large labor force for its operation and maintenance is certain to be inefficient in other respects, for many of the shortcomings in design that make necessary the excessive use of labor are generally not corrected merely by having too many men. A simple example of this is a poorly designed ore-feeding system: if this is inadequate to the extent that one man must be constantly unclogging feed chutes, it may help the situation to put two men or three at this task instead of one, but the feed rate will still be inconstant. First of the factors that affect labor saving is the location of the mill. This is often determined by transportation costs alone, and as a result the mill may be placed close to the mine regardless of the nature of the terrain. The designer must then adapt his layout to the conditions, favorable or not. This happens often at small properties, where capital investment may seem more important than operating expense. In most instances, however, a mill site carefully selected for the advantages it gives the designer in laying out the plant is the most economical in the long run, even if it involves a slight increase in cost of ore haulage. Given some freedom of choice, the design engineer may be able to find just the piece of ground that provides the proper gradient for the needs of the flowsheet, permits installation of essential yards and trackage, and perhaps supplies an excellent site for a tailing dam. Further justification for having placed the mill not too close to the mine sometimes emerges only years later as an opportunity to treat ores from other properties. When it is known from the beginning that the new mill will serve a number of scattered mines, a free choice of mill site is naturally stimulated. IN AS MUCH as the interesting changes in the economics of the zinc industry are covered nowhere else in this issue, and they are related to technological progress in the metallurgy of zinc, some reference to prices and production will first be made. The latter part of 1939 is outstanding in the large war demand for metals including zinc, whereas in the first eight months the demand for zinc was subnormal. The cause of the rapid in- crease in demand was the European war and hence the future is problematical. When the year began zinc was in the doldrums, with low prices, and continued thus until August when an advance in price started, reaching 6.5. per pound early in October. (Prime Western, St. Louis.) Rapid changes in the price of any metal are viewed adversely by the metal industry. The persistent low price for zinc of 4 to 49512 for about two years curtailed production and in one instance closed one large plant for a brief period.

SLAG composition, slag constitution, reactions in slag, and reactions between slag and metal-in other words, the physical chemistry of slags-are matters of great importance to the open-hearth operator, whether or not he makes use of any detailed knowledge of them. Although this is a relatively young branch of the science of steel- making, much progress has been made; however, much remains to be learned, and many of the statements that can be made at present are probably--or even certainly-subject to future change. Nevertheless, the physical chemistry of slags is sufficiently developed to provide a reasonably secure basis for real understanding of steelmaking reactions. FUNDAMENTALS OF SLAG CONTROL By way of introduction, some time is spent in this chapter on effecting an easy transition from some of the more "practical" manifestations of slag to discussions couched in the more formal language of physical chemistry. This necessitates a certain amount of repetition, but it is felt that the purpose of the chapter is best served in this way. Reactions in the metal phase have products that find their way into the slag and are important components thereof; they are discussed in detail in the preceding chapter. Some substances distribute themselves Between slag and metal in definite fashion, and others are found only in the slag. Their reactions are a large reason for this chapter. Limitations of Slag Control. The open-hearth process is essentially oxidizing and cannot be otherwise operated. (Oxygen gradients in the furnace, the mechanism of oxygen inflow, and similar subjects are discussed in Chapter XIX.) As shown in the calculations of material and heat balances for the charge (see Chapter XV), from 25 to 50 lb. of oxygen will flow from air or combustion gases into the charge or molten bath during the heat for each ton of liquid steel

ONE of the important factors that determine the resistance of a metal or alloy to further chemical reaction is the structure of the superficial oxide film A thorough understanding of the physical and chemical structure as well as the stability of the oxide film formed on the surface as a function of time and temperature of the chemical reaction might furnish clues as to the nature of the reaction process and the protective nature of the film A comprehensive program has been undertaken to study these phenomena This paper summarizes the structure of the oxide films formed on the metals iron, cobalt, nickel, chromium and copper at temperatures up to 700°C Before the introduction of the electron diffraction technique, it «as necessary to use either direct chemical analyses or X-ray diffraction analyses to determine the nature of the oxide film formed on the metal or alloy Chemical analyses yields information on the percentages of the several atomic species present in the film while X-ray diffraction analyses yield information on the atomic geometry In special cases the information obtained may be identical, but in general both view-points are necessary Much of, the early work was carried out on the oxidation of bulk samples where thick films were obtained The products were identified after cooling to room temperature by X-ray diffraction and chemical analyses Although much useful information has been obtained in this manner, little could be learned about the character of the protective oxides during the period when the films were actually protective Evidence concerning the chemical structure of thin oxide films has been made possible by the development of the electron diffraction reflection technique In this method the most fruitful investigations have been made by carrying out the reaction in situ at the temperature at which the film is actually protective LITERATURE The oxidation of iron has been extensively investigated by X-ray and electron diffraction Jackson and Quarrell1 found that oxide films formed and examined at the same temperature differed considerably from those allowed to cool to room temperature The results showed that below 400°C the oxide that was stable in intimate contact with iron was Fe304, between 515° and 900°C the stable film was FeO Above the upper change point of iron the oxide was found to be Fe304 prom 400° to 515°C , FeO, Fe304 or a mixture of the two oxides was found Recrystallization of the air-formed film below 400° and above 900°C led to the formation of Fe304 In the range where thicker films consisted of FeO, the air-formed film was converted to a new hexagonal oxide not previously described

The injection of a hot liquid into initially cool porous media, saturated with the same liquid and surrounded by two impermeable but heat conducting media (cap and base rock), has been studied both experimentally and theoretically. The temperature dependence of the viscosity was included in the theoretical model, but it was assumed that the specilic heats and densities of the various materials were independent of the temperature. Solutions to the theoretical model were approximated by numerical methods. Both theoretical and experimental results indicate that center-line temperatures are significantly higher than boundary temperatures. Comparison of experimental and theoretical results with a cold/hot viscosity ratio 01 19:1 were in reasonable agreement. Theoretical calculations show that the effect of the temperature dependence of viscosity was very significant at ratios of 100:l to 1000:1, which are typical of those that occur when injecting hot water to flood heavy oil reservoirs. INTRODUCTION We consider the problem of prediction of fluid flow and temperature distribution in an initially cold-fluid-filled reservoir on the injection of the same hot liquid by the use of mathematical and physical models. The results reported are for a two-dimensional rectangular section of the reservoir, as shown in Fig. 1. The injection and withdrawal faces are assumed to be equipotentials for fluid flow. The ultimate purpose of such models would be to predict hot-water injection performance. However, we note that in the work presented here, one of the most significant aspects of the problem — the instabilities resulting from two-phase, water and oil flow — is not included. We will not give a historical review, but refer instead to the paper of Spillette and Nielsen,1 which contains a rather complete bibliography and critical discussion. The physical problem is exactly the same as Spillette and Nielsen, except for certain simplifications in our assumptions. The mathematical details are somewhat different, and we will present the details of our method here. The mass flow equation, which is elliptic in character, is handled by successive overrelaxation. The heat flow equation, which is parabolic in character, is handled by a straightforward explicit approximation. Some difficulty arose in the over-all heat balance due to small errors in the solution of the mass flow equation, and we feel that a different formulation of the heat flow equation would be desirable for future work. In addition to the mathematical solutions for the temperature distributions in a porous medium due to the injection of hot liquids, experimental data are presented to check the validity of these solutions. A schematic diagram of the model is shown in Fig. 2. Certain qualitative physical conclusions were obtained from our numerical and experimental results. These are: 1. Assuming high (infinite) conductivity normal to the bedding plane in the reservoir is a poor approximation, and may lead to overestimates of the total heat losses (to cap and base rock) of as much as 50 percent. 2. More heat is retained in the reservoir (per unit of heat injected) for higher viscosity changes. 3. Any particular temperature isotherm moves more rapidly along the center line for higher viscosity changes. Consequently, the approximation of temperature independent viscosity is not suitable for obtaining quantitatively correct results. MATHEMATICAL MODEL Our mathematical model is that of a reservoir of thickness 2h. The problem is idealized from that of a linear hot-water drive, and we imagine that the input face is sufficiently far away from the injection wells that the stream lines enter it normally. FactoRs entering into the market value of coal are its grade, and the cost of labor, material, and capital. Reduction in these costs cannot be expected in the future, and it therefore follows that greater economy in their use must be accomplished if it is desired to hold the present markets; more tons of product per unit must be obtained in a given time from both men and material, and means devised for increasing the percentage of lump and domestic sizes. This paper is presented for the purpose of inviting discussion and stimulating thought in regard to the influence of methods of procedure and plans of mining, upon the quality of coal, the economical use of labor, material, and capital, and the cost of production. Even the better methods of the present day leave much to be desired, and a review of the reasons and necessities for their use may be of value in pointing the way to more economical mining. The writer does not attempt to discuss untried methods of mining, but rather to state clearly and concisely a summary of the results obtained under the several methods of procedure that have been adopted. In some instances a high degree of concentration has been effected, and comparisons of the results obtained with the results of lesser degrees of concentration form an interesting study. It is believed that much may be accomplished in improving the quality, and in the more economical use of labor, material, and capital, by concentration, and it is to concentration in particular that your study is invited. The writer, who has occasion to visit many mines, most of which are under different management, has been inclined to the opinion that improvement has been retarded in many ways and that mining has not as yet been entirely freed from the early-day practices which were forced upon it. Practices resulting in lack of concentration, to which reference will be made, are: The absence of robbing, necessitating the frequent interposition of barrier pillars; lack of system and of proper supervision, resulting in losses of life and coal. The effects of heat transfer on the corrosion behavior of type 304 stainless steel in boiling water have been studied. Heat transfer conditions increase the tendencies of the stainless steel toward stress-corrosion mucking when the water is contaminated with Cl-. Surface preparation is the most important variable in determining the severity of the stress-corrosion problem in water with a given Cl- content. Heat treatment, chemical cleaning, and degree of wet film boiling also affect the corrosion of stainless steels used as heat transfer surfaces in boiling water. An up-paratus for corrosion testing under controlled heat transfer conditions is described. THE principal objective of this investigation was to study the corrosion behavior of AISI Type 304 stainless steel in boiling high-purity water under conditions of heat transfer. The principal variables in the study were: a) boiling conditions: limited boil, agitated boil; b) metallurgical structure: annealed or sensitized; c) surface condition: rolled, pickled, or ground. The results of the study should elucidate the role of heat transfer in the corrosion of stainless steel in boiling high-purity water and provide a base line from which to assess the severity of this type of corrosion. Although there has been an investigation of the effect of heat transfer on the corrosion behavior of stainless steels in alkaline waters,' work on the corrosion of stainless steels under heat transfer has been largely confined to various acid solutions.'-4 Furthermore, the study of the corrosion of stainless steels in high-purity water has been generally restricted to auto-clave and instream testing in superheated (e.g., 300°C) water and steam.5'6 Cooling water problems led to this study of the corrosion behavior of type 304 stainless steel in high-purity water at its atmospheric boiling point. In addition to the effects of heat transfer, this study also considered the influences of the type of boiling,7 metallurgical structure, and surface condition on the corrosion behavior of stainless steel in high-purity water. Two boiling conditions were investigated in this study: a) limiting boiling, i.e., when the heat-transfer surface had just reached the boiling point and boiling nucleated randomly over the specimen surface and b) agitated boiling, i.e., when a mild degree of superheat had been achieved on the specimen surface and boiling occurred generally over the specimen surface. Both boiling conditions are broadly classified as wet-film boiling. Originally, this program included the study of a third type of boiling, dry-film conditions. At dry-film boiling the temperature of the heat transfer surface is high enough so that it is covered with a continuous film of steam. Experimental difficulties made it impossible to study this kind of boiling with the available apparatus. Since surface condition affects heat transfer rates, three typical surfaces were chosen for study: a) as-rolled, the 2B finish received from the supplier, b) as-pickled, 30 min in 8 pct HNO3-1 pct HF, and c) as-ground on 120 grit paper. In order to evaluate the effect of improper heat treatment or welding on hot wall corrosion, both annealed and sensitized mi-crostructure were included in this study. EXPERIMENTAL Test Apparatus. The particular problems of interest in this investigation required a knowledge of the thermal gradient through the test specimen. From this gradient, the heat flux to the surface and the surface temperature could be determined. In order to satisfy this need, an apparatus similar to the boiling-disk apparatus of Fisher and whitney2 was designed. This paper presents a general discussion of the utility of the statistical technique known as multiple correlation, and gives three specific examples of its application. The first demonstrates the most simple form, or straight-line, multiple correlation. The other two demonstrate multiple correlation analysis in best-fitting third-degree parabolas. With the increasing availability of digital computers, the method becomes entirely feasible where heretofore its use was impractical. The advantages of the method are discussed, and curves are presented which were developed by computerizing the regression equations developed in the examples. The method described in this paper is for use with complex systems, and the examples given are complex metallurgical systems. This subject falls under the general classification of cybernetics, which is defined' as "the science of control and communication, in the animal and the machine." Machine, in this case, can include chemical and physical processes which take place within machines and processing equipment of all kinds. The classical approach to scientific investigation has been the construction of simple models and the changing of variables one at a time. This method is wholly inadequate for obtaining useful information from the complex systems of modern technology including many of our flotation and hydrometallurgical processes. Cybernetics offers the method by which complex systems which have been implemented as an art in the past can now be analyzed with all the discipline of a science. Mathematical techniques for achieving multiple correlation analysis have decided advantages over some of the other statistical methods.2-4 Multiple correlation does not require a series of experiments that have been rigidly planned as do many of the other statistical methods. For this reason, it can be used effectively for interpretation of information from op- erating plants, where planned experiments are impractical, as well as for laboratory experiments. First-degree multiple correlation has been used for many years, and was useful, but limited to linear or nearly linear relationships. The technique described in this paper provides a method for analyzing systems which may be non-linear. This particular technique is multiple correlation analysis in best-fitting third-degree parabolas. It is quite possible that lack of reference to the technique has been due to the overwhelming mass of computations it requires even for relatively simple problems. With the advent of computers, however, its use has become entirely feasible. For the benefit of those who may not be familiar with the subject, it might be well to pause at this point to discuss multiple correlation analysis — what it is and what it achieves. To go back to the old familiar fitting of a set of points with a best-fitting straight line by the least squares procedure, it is conceded that this a good method where there is only one independent variable influencing the dependent variable under consideration, and providing that the relationship is linear. In most fields of investigation, however, there are usually a number of factors exerting important influence, and they frequently bear relationships with the dependent variable other than straight line. Under these conditions, it is easy to see how misleading a simple correlation study might be. Multiple correlation can be used for any number of variables. Within the experience of the writer, this technique has been used to establish regression equations for determination of carbon rate, burden permeability, and production rate on iron blast furnaces, production rate on open hearth steel furnaces, life of molds for steel ingots, rolled steel tensile strength and various defects in rolled products, the performance of ore dressing equipment, and optimization of extractive metallurgical process variables. The discovery of mathematical correlation does not prove, per se, true cause-and-effect relationship, but simply establishes a hypothesis. If the regression equation can be used to make successful predictions of what will happen with future arrays of independent variables, then one can feel reasonably assured that true cause-and-effect relationships have been discovered.

The basic research for this study was conducted by Battelle's Columbus Laboratories in 1974. The high-sulfur content of coal threatens to erode its competitive position in the future. The impact of sulfur removal on final costs of eastern interior coal lies at the very heart of this market analysis. An extensive market survey was conducted that considered both traditional coal markets as well as anticipated future markets. Competition for coal from this province considers low-sulfur Western coal, nu- clear power, international oil and coal trade, as well as Appalachian coal producers. Based on projections of future energy consumption under several scenarios, a comprehensive market forecast for eastern interior coal was made to 2040. The study upon which this paper is based was completed by Battelle's Columbus Laboratories for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1974. It is but part of an overall effort by the Corps to evaluate the costs and benefits to the nation of waterway improvements. This study is primarily concerned with future coal markets for production from those counties near the Wabash River in the heart of the Eastern Interior Province. An objective here is to consider a most pessimistic energy (and hence, coal) demand for planning purposes.

The terms kaolin, china clay, ball clay, and paper clay are more or less loosely and interchangeably applied to a large class of white-burning clays. These clays are made up chiefly of hydrous amorphous (colloidal) aluminum silicates with variable amounts of free silica and other impurities in small quantities. Occasionally also the term kaolinite is wrongly applied to a white-burning clay, for kaolinite is a mineral of definite chemical composition and definite crystalline form which occurs but sparingly in nature. It is not the purpose of this paper, however, to define or classify clays, or to enter into a discussion of the chemistry of clays. It is rather a general description of the occurrence and methods of mining of a kindred group of clays, and a discussion of their future economic aspect. In the Southern Appalachian States, the mining of white-burning clays has in recent years become an important industry. Although these clays are of several distinct types, which occur in as many localities under different geologic conditions, they are for the most part primarily of the same origin. They are essentially the same in elementary constituents, and are largely consumed in the game industrial arts. From the standpoint of a mining engineer, therefore, and for convenience in comparison and correlation, it should be interesting to discuss them under one heading. Kinds of Clay The most important types of clay which are now being actively mined in the Southern Appalachian States and with which this paper is particularly concerned are the North Carolina, Virginia, and Georgia kaolins or china clays (residual); the South Carolina and Georgia kaolins or paper clays (sedimentary); and the Florida and Tennessee plastic kaolins or ball clays (sedimentary). Other varieties which are interesting but which are as yet of little importance are the pocket deposits of white clay in Augusta County, Virginia, the bauxitic kaolins of Tennessee,

ISOTOPIC tracers have become an important aid in following the progress of chemical processes in the laboratory. It has recently been found possible to utilize a system of naturally existing isotopic tracers to obtain information about the geo- logical history of lead ores. Common lead, such as is found in lead deposits, is a mixture of four stable isotopes having atomic weights 204, 206, 207, and 208. Of these, the last three are identical with the lead isotopes produced as stable end products of the radioactive decays of uranium and thorium: the first, lead-204, is not known to be produced on the surface of the earth by any process. Since uranium and thorium occur in the surface regions of the earth in amounts comparable with lead, and since the half-lives of uranium and thorium isotopes are of the same order as the age of the earth, they produce the radiogenic lead isotopes in amounts com- parable to the amount of nonradiogenic lead present. Every significant exposure of a sample of lead to uranium and thorium will therefore lead to the permanent alteration of the lead isotope ratios in that sample.

IT is not often that bore hole surveys can be checked by actual civil engineering methods. A recent Arizona survey was checked by normal surveying methods and the comparison of the results should be of value to both oil and mining men. During the summer of 1948 the Phelps-Dodge Corporation, at its Copper Queen property near Bisbee, Ariz., drilled a 1245 ft, 8 in. diam, churn drill- hole in a mineralized area and cased part of it, intending to use it to transfer mill tailings for stope fill. The hole, as frequently occurs, was not straight, and, in endeavoring to locate the bottom in- the underground workings, they found no evidence of the hole at the underground coordinates directly below the surface location. The noise of the drilling tools was reasonably clear, but the direction of sound was uncertain. Preliminary tests with available equipment were not successful in locating the bottom of the hole. Be- cause of the mineralized character of the area and the fact there was some casing in the hole, any magnetic method of well surveying would give results ' of doubtful value.

A cellular precipitation reaction in which cells consisting of an Ni3Ti (DO24) phase and austenite are formed has been studied in an austenitic Fe-30 Ni-6 Ti alloy. The variation of the growth rate and interlamellar spacing of the Ni3Ti cells with temperature has been determined m the range 400" to 975°C; the interlamellar spacing is proportional to the degree of undercooling; the growth rate can be expressed by an equation of the form G = K?T)2 exp(-Q/RT). The habit of the Ni3Ti lamellae is (001)Ni3Ti (111)y;[010]Ni3T2 [010]y. An almost perfectly coherent interface is formed between Ni3Ti lamellae with this orientation rela -tionship and the intervening austenite. This first Ni3Ti cellular product is subsequently consumed by a second cellular reaction of much coarser spacing. CELLULAR precipitation reactions have been studied in copper-base,1,2 Au-Ni,3 pb-sn,4 and iron-base ferritic5,6 solid solutions, and this mode of precipitation has been treated theoretically by smith," Turnbull,8,9 cahn,10 and more recently by bohm.11 In the case of substitutional austenitic iron-base alloys little or no data are available, Cellular precipitation reactions are well known in austenitic nickel-base alloys12,13 but usually these reactions do not proceed to completion because of general precipitation occurring in the matrix, and they have not been studied in detail. Precipitation from an austenitic Fe-30 Ni-6 Ti alloy was studied as part of a larger investigation of the mechanisms of precipitation from substitutional iron-base alloys. This alloy, austenitic at high temperatures, decomposes at lower temperatures by a double cellular precipitation reaction. The first decomposition product consists of alternate lamellae of an Ni3Ti(DO24) phase and austenite. The reaction proceeds to completion, consuming all of the original austenite. This first cellular product is subsequently consumed by a second cellular reaction of much coarser spacing. The first cellular reaction was studied in detail by light and electron microscopy, hardness measurements, and by X-ray and electron diffraction. Interlamellar spacings and growth rates were measured during isothermal aging in the range 400" to 975°C. The orientation relationship between the Ni3Ti and austenite lamellae was determined and indicates that an almost perfectly coherent interface exists between the two phases. This first Ni3Ti cellular reaction is of particular interest because it occurs over such a wide temperature interval. This allows cellular growth rates and interlamellar spacing data to be obtained for much larger degrees of undercooling than reported hitherto. Beginning with a small but positive participation in undersea mining, the Bureau of Mines continues its active investigations into this potentially tremendous field. The Bureau began its active role in undersea mining in September 1963, with a small task force of three dedicated scientists and a secretary, establishing headquarters at the old Tiburon Naval Net Depot about seven miles up the coast from San Francisco. The past months have been both busy and productive. With 22 Federal agencies involved in oceanography, it logically was the intent of Congress that the Bureau of Mines undertake research concerned only with the technology of marine mineral production and utilization. The Bureau has maintained this purpose in its activities at Tiburon, for while institutes, universities, the Navy and other Government agencies have developed exceptional programs in the fundamental science of the oceans, commonly called oceanographic research, little has been done toward advancing man's ability to exploit the ocean floors other than by drilling for oil and gas and sulfur.

D. A. Dahlstrom—Mr. Falconer has done an admirable job of proving the adaptability of the cyclone to the beneficiation of a very difficult size range in the preparation of coal. The addition of the cyclone to other coarser size methods makes it economically feasible for the coal operator to rigorously control his marketed products at a high and uniform quality level down to the 48 and 100-mesh size. Furthermore, it should be pointed out that by utilizing the cyclone as a deslimer or classifier the —3 200-mesh fraction, usually containing large percentages of undesirable material, can also be quickly and cheaply removed from the clean coal. Advantages of such a step are several: (1) Reduction of ash content, especially where clays and slimes are serious. (2) lower moisture content of the final coal. (3) easier mechanical and thermal de-watering of the fine coal due to higher cake and bed permeabilities. The author has indicated that adjustable control means should be installed on the cyclone operating on a heavy-media slurry. This also holds true for the cyclone acting as classifier, deslimer or preliminary dewatering agent and is worthy of special emphasis. Such controls, while not necessarily automatic, must be simple, rapidly adjustable, and require a minimum of attention. Three methods available to the operator are (1) throttling valve on the feed line, (2) back pressure valve on the overflow, and (3) adjustable diameter underflow nozzles. The first two, while fulfilling the specifications, suffer the disadvantage of restricting capacity if severe throttling is necessary. The third method has little effect on capacity and easily maintains an underflow of correct moisture content. Several designs are possible, but two find the widest application. The first was developed by Robert Piros of The Truax-Traer Coal Co. and uses a simple casting containing two holders for underflow nozzles which can be rotated about an axis parallel to the cyclone centerline. These holders retain the underflow nozzle flush with the conical section walls. When a change in nozzle diameter is required, the new size is placed in the spare holder and rotated into place. A second design utilizes a soft rubber cylindrical tube which is compressed or released from three sides, causing the inner diameter of the tube to decrease or increase. DURING the past few years there has been considerable effort devoted to the understanding of radiation effects on materials. The concept of the Frenkel defect and other lattice defects suggests that radiation may alter the rate of many metallurgical phenomena, especially those which are diffusion controlled. In 1953 R. R. Coltman and T. H. ~lewitt' found an appreciable effect on the ordering rate of Cu,Au due to fast neutron bombardment. Since then several rather comprehensive theories have been proposed on radiation enhanced diffusion in solids.2"4 If the energy of the radiation is above the threshold energy for the removal of atoms from their lattice sites, Frenkel defects will be produced. These defects can be produced uniformly throughout a relatively thick specimen by high-energy X-rays permitting bulk property studies without the limitation of sample dimensions. In this work high-purity arsenic containing 30 ppm of impurities was allowed to diffuse from the gase- ous phase at 700°C into single crystals of p-type germanium containing 0.1 ppm of indium. As the arsenic diffuses into the P-type germanium, an n-type layer will form in the diffusion zone. At the p-n junction the concentration ratio of the arsenic to the indium is constant. Experimental Procedures—The germanium specimens, 10 mm by 10 mm by 5 mm, were polished and etched to a mirror finish. The specimens were then sealed off in a vycor glass capsule at 3 x 10"5 mm Hg pressure with a sufficient amount of arsenic powder to produce a one-half atm pressure of arsenic at 700°C. Specimens were annealed at 700°C without radiation. The diffusion coefficient determined from these samples agrees within 8 pct of previous work done by Fuller.' Three specimens were given diffusion anneals at 700°C in a small tube furnace centered beneath the target of a 2-mev Van de Graaff generator. The specimens when in the furnace were 10 cm directly below the target of the generator. These specimens were irradiated continuously during the diffusion run with the Van de Graaff operating at 2 mev with a tube current of 225 to 250 pamp. The intensity of the x-radiation at the surface of the specimen inside the furnace was approximately 4.5 x l05 roentgens per hr. The temperature was controlled within m2°C by a chromel-alumel thermocouple throughout this work with no observed temperature change due to the radiation. By careful lapping, the samples were polished at an angle of 5 deg to the diffusion zone, giving a XI0 increase in the visible diffusion zone. The location

HENRY MARION HOWE, in whose memory we are gathered together, was one of the great thinkers who develop from time to time to whom is given the rare gift of synthesis. Analysis is given to few, but synthesis, the ability to show the relation of all parts to each other and thus to give a clear picture of the whole, is reserved for the very few. Analysis can be achieved by honesty, intelligence, and industry, but synthesis is only given to genius Professor Howe's crowning achievement is the picture of the whole iron-carbon series shown in Fig. I, which places steel, malleable, gray iron, mottled and chilled irons in their proper relation to each other and shows the essential unity of the series. Perhaps his best statement of the case is found on page go of the Metallography of Steel and Cast Iron in these words: "Each member of the gray cast-iron series consists of the metallic matrix approximately equivalent to that member of the steel-white-cast-iron series to which it corresponds in percentage of combined carbon with its continuity broken up-by masses of graphite . . . " Apparently he had taken considerable interest in this idea around the turn of the century, for he refers to a discussion at the Franklin Institute in 1900 in which he said: "Though many others had probably conceived this relation between the steels and cast irons, it was here enunciated for the first time, so far as I know. It was received with great incredulity." The concept was explained in some detail in a paper on 'The Constitution of Cast Iron" presented before the A.S.T.M. in 1902 when Professor Howe was retiring president of that young society. In the discussion Dr. Sauveur stated that he was "very well acquainted with Professor Howe's theory of the constitution of cast iron," and went on to say that while he "shared it to the fullest extent, some foundrymen . . . claim cast iron is a metal entirely different from steel . . . that steel and cast iron have very little in common, and that therefore the knowledge gained in the study of steel is of little or no value in the study of cast iron." Dr. Moldenke, in discussing the same paper, said he had been working on the same theory for 12 years but he laid no claim to publication. Discussing the difference in the micro- structure of the metallic matrix, Professor Howe pointed out that "such minor struc- tural differences are indeed to be expected, because of the difference in the conditions under which these constituents are generated. "One difference in these conditions is that the steel of most micrographs has been either forged or at least treated thermally in such a way as to give a new structure radically different from that which formed during the initial solidification, whereas the cast irons have not.
