The anelastic behavior of Ni-C alloys of nominal 0.5 wt pct C has been determined over a wide temperature range. The most prominent damping effect, that due to the presence of C-C pairs, was measured both above and below the Curie temperature. The effect on diffusion of the C-C pairs by magnetic spin ordering is deduced to be very small. The diffusion coefficient for C-C pairs in nickel is given by the expression ThE solid-state diffusion of both interstitial and sub-stitutional solutes in ferromagnetic solvents has been the subject of a number of investigations. Measurements of the self-diffusion of iron,"' the diffusion of nickel1,4 gold,"1 and cobalt4 into iron, the diffusion of vanadium in an Fe-V alloy,' and the diffusion of cobalt and nickel in Co-Ni alloys9 show an unusual behavior. In both the ferromagnetic and paramagnetic regions, far removed from the Curie temperature, the diffusion coefficient, D, obeys an Arrhenius relation. However, in the ferromagnetic region D is markedly lower than would be expected from an extrapolation of D from the paramagnetic region; this results in an increase in the activation energy in the ferromagnetic region. The cause of this effect for self- and substitutional diffusion is uncertain. Since substitutional diffusion is presumed to proceed by the vacancy mechanism, it has been variously suggested that the increase in activation energy below the Curie temperature is due to one of the following causes: 1) an increase in the energy of formation of a vacancy because of local demagnetization around the vacancy,2,3 2) a decrease in vacancy mobility in the ferromagnetic state,' or 3) an effect on the entropy of motion of a vacancy in the ferromagnetic state.5 Quite another explanation for the observed effect has been proposed by Borg.7 The diffusion coefficient is a function of the elastic constants of a metal. Since the temperature dependence of the elastic constants often changes at the Curie temperature, the temperature dependence of D might be expected to undergo a universal change in the vicinity of the Curie temperature. The magnitude of the change in D would, of course, depend on the magnitude of the change in the elastic constants. One might attempt to differentiate between vacancy effects and elastic effects by making measurements on interstitial alloys, in which vacancy effects play no role. Some measurements of this type have been made; this paper reports additional observations. Measurements of the diffusion of carbon in a Fe by a tracer technique8 and of the diffusion of carbon in a Co and in Co-Fe alloys by a decarburization method9 reveal a small effect, if any, on D of the magnetic change at the Curie temperature. If the effect of spin ordering is only to alter the parameters controlling formation or mobility of a vacancy, interstitial diffusion should indeed remain unchanged through the magnetic transition, as these measurements imply.

The constitutional diagram for the gadolinium-cobalt system has been determined. Seven intermetallic compounds have been found at compositions corresponding to the follwing gadolinium-cobalt ratios: 3:1, 1:1, 2:3, 1:2, 1:3, 1:4, 1:5. The GdCor compound has a congruent melting point above 1600°C. whereas the remaining compounds melt incongruently. Eutectics exist at 16 wt pct Co and 84 wt pct Co, with melting points of 620° and 1260°C, respectively. PREVIOUS papers'" have recorded constitutional data for systems of gadolinium with iron and nickel. This paper presents data obtained on alloys of gadolinium with the remaining 3d transition element-cobalt. voge13 found that cerium forms, with cobalt, the intermetallic compounds; Ce3Co, CeCo, CeCo2, CeCo3, CeCo4, and CeCo5 Other workers4-' found the 1:2 compound in this series to exist in a C-15 (face-centered cubic) structure and the 1:5 compound to exist in a hexagonal crystal system. Comparison of earlier data with that now reported will be made subsequently. EXPERIMENTAL Methods of alloy preparation, annealing procedures, and experimental techniques have been previously reported.' The cobalt content of alloy specimens was determined volumetrically. RESULTS Microstructure—The alloy containing 10.5 wt pct Co corresponds closely to the composition of the first intermetallic compound Gd3CO. In Fig. 1 the microstructure is essentially single phase composed of Gd3Co which formed peritectically. The globular areas are remnants of the peritectic reaction which did not quite go to completion. A eutectic occurs between Gd3Co and the next higher compound GdCO, which is followed by a series of peritectic compounds. Fig. 2, an arc-cast alloy containing 20.2 wt pct Co, shows large primary crystals of GdCo etching either white or black (depending on crystallographic orientation), embedded in the eutectic. Similarly, in Fig. 3 at 31.2 wt pct Co, a compound, probably GdCo3, has separated from the melt. Subsequent peritectic reactions were almost completely by-passed as the alloy cooled, the residual liquid freezing as a fine eutectic. In the 47.5 wt pct Co alloy, Fig. 4, the high melting point compound, GdCO4, has solidified as massive, white-etching grains, which reacted with the liquid to form GdCo3 as the second phase. The microstructure of an arc-melted alloy containing 60.5 pct Co is complex, Fig. 5, and presents some difficulty in interpretation. The grey etching matrix is probably primary GdCO4. The dappled phase represents grains of GdCO5 which have separated from the melt on cooling. The discrete spots in this phase are eutectic liquid. Small light etching crystallites are probably GdCO5 formed by the incomplete high-temperature peritectic reaction. GdCO4 is retained in arc-melted specimens containing 70.5 wt pct Co, Fig. 6. White areas of this compound are held in a matrix of GdCO5 the appearance of which is mottled slightly by inclusions of the second eutectic in this system. The development of the spheroidized eutectic at high cobalt contents is depicted in Fig. 7 (80.3 wt pct Co) in which the white massive crystals are GdCO5 compound. Further development of this eutectic is seen in Fig. 8, the primary white phase here being pure cobalt. Thermal Studies—Differential thermal analyses and melting point determinations have yielded the data shown in Fig. 10. The high gadolinium eutectic, indicated by microscopy, was confirmed at about 16 wt pct Co, melting at 620°C . A eutectic also occurs at about 84 wt pct Co melting at about 1260°C. The accumulation of paraffin deposits in tubular goods has been recognized as a major production problem since the inception of the petroleum industry. This problem is not limited to any particular geographical area nor is it limited to a specific type of crude oil.' Generally speaking, "paraffin" deposition pertains to the deposition of any predominately organic material in flow lines, and possibly even at the sand face, which would hamper the production of oil. In some fields, a continuous effort is required to remove deposits of paraffin and in order to accomplish this, many unique methods have been devised. The best solution to this problem, however, is to prevent the formation of such deposits. One method which has been tried in a number of fields is the use of plastic pipe. The purpose of this investigation is to compare the relative effectiveness of several plastic materials to aid in the reduction or prevention of paraffin accumulations in surface flow lines. COMPOSITlON OF PARAFFIN DEPOSITS By definition, paraffin deposits are those materials which are insoluble in crude oil at the prevailing producing conditions of temperature and pressure. Such deposits1 s usually consist of small particles of petroleum wax intermixed with resins, asphaltic material, and crude oil. They may also contain a variety of foreign materials such as sand, silt, water, various metal oxides, sulfates and carbonates of iron. barium, and calcium. The petroleum waxes deposited in flow strings usually consist of both a "hard" and a "soft" wax fraction. These waxes are largely aliphatic hydrocarbons with smaller amounts of aromatic and naphthenic compounds. Nathan' has classified the hard and soft wax fractions. The aliphatic hydrocarbons present are those of high molecular weight with high melting points. Reistle3 pointed out that these high molecular weight compounds first separate from the oil due to a sharp decrease in solubility as the melting point increases. The identification of the resins and asphaltic materials rests, at present, on an arbitrary solubility procedure. Under certain conditions, materials which are insoluble in pentane (ASTM D-893) are defined as resins and asphalts. Subgrouping of these materials is made on decreasing solubility in benzene and carbon disul-fide. Shock' found some correlation be-tween the solvent response and the pentane insoluble content of paraftins: higher pentane insoluble fractions are less soluble in any of the commonly used commercial solvents. PARAFFIN CONTROL METHODS The methods used in oil fields to prevent and remove paraffin accumulations can be grouped into four general classes: (1) operative methods, (2) physical methods, (3) chemical methods, and (4) combination of any of these. Operative methods attempt to prevent the formation of paraffin deposits while the other methods are concerned primarily with the removal of these deposits. Plastic coated pipe has been used for a number of years to prevent cor- rosion in wells, and in manv instances paraffin deposits have -been greatly reduced. Field observations have indicated that plastic coated pipe not only reduced paraffin accumulation but in some cases eliminated deposition completely; however, data are needed to demonstrate the relative effectiveness of plastic materials. Deposition Apparatus The pipe used to determine the effect of velocity on rates of deposition was %- and 2-in. nominal diameter, and 5 ft in length. Steel, butyrate, rigid PVC, kralastic resin-type plastic pipes, epoxy coated pipe, PVC lined glass fiber pipe, and aluminum pipe were tested. Steel pipe was used as a control. Fig. 1 is a schematic diagram of the apparatus showing the relative position of the separate units making up the equipment. In order to facilitate the installation and removal of the test pipes in the apparatus, O-ring seals capable of sustaining pressures of 50 psi were provided at each end. Test pipes were submerged in a cold water bath maintained at or below room temperature by circulating water through copper cooling coils packed in ice. A hot water bath equipped with immersion-type heaters, stirrers, and a thermoregulator was used to maintain the temperature of the oil prior to introduction into the piping manifold. The capacity of the oil reservoir was 30 gal. A 33-gal/min centrifugal pump, capable of producing turbulent flow velocities in the test pipes, was used to circulate the oil through the system when using %-in. pipe; and a 70-galjmin centrifugal pump was used in later tests using 2-in. pipe. THE writer has dealt with the effect of various methods of melting copper upon the gas content of the metal.1 The copper referred to in his in his earlier paper was melted in the foundry both in the oil furnace and the electric furnace. It was thought that some information in regard to the gases in a sample of overpoled copper might also be of interest, and through the courtesy of C. R. Stevens, superintendent of the copper mill of the Westinghouse Elec. & Mfg. Co., such a sample was obtained. The metal was chill-cast in the form of an ingot about 7 in. long, 2 ½ in. deep (from the base to the raised surface of the ingot) and from 1 3/8 to 1 7/8 in. wide. A photograph of part of the ingot is shown in Fig. 1. The effect of overpoling on the surface of the metal is here quite clearly shown.

In a paper by Abrahamson and Alexander concerning a series of correlations between electronic structure and property changes, it was hypothesized that each solute atom in a dilute solution had a characteristic volume of solvent atoms over which some form of electronic interaction occurred. From this description it is possible to picture the solute atoms as occurring in an ordered array for the most efficient arrangement. A recent review article2 has shown that some form of anomaly exists for a whole series of properties when dilute additions of tungsten are made to iron, of. Fig. 1. Any mechanism to fit one property must also be amenable to mechanisms for the other properties. The possibility of some structural change in this region appears to offer the best hope. The system chosen for investigation was the iron tungsten system. Zone-refined iron with zone-leveled tungsten additions were supplied by Materials Research Corp. as 3/8-in.-diam bars. Transmission electron microscopy was used to study the structure. One-quarter inch specimens of each alloy were cold-rolled to 10-mil sheets, cleaned, punched to electron-microscope specimen-holder size, and annealed in vacuum for 2 hr at 800°C and 2 hr at 700°C followed by a furnace cool. The specimens were attached to a platinum wire and the specimen edge and wire were painted prior to thinning in a solution of 10 pct perchloric acid in glacial acetic acid. It was believed that if ordering were present due to electronic interactions the polishing procedure chosen would provide a simultaneous combination of chemical attack and electropolishing to exhibit the ordered structure. The chemical attack would be expected to penetrate those areas equidistant from the tungsten atoms, while the electropolishing would serve to "plane off" the volumes where the chemical attack had taken place. If one of the ordered tungsten planes were parallel to the specimen face at the edge of the thinned hole, a plate or micalike structure would be expected. A typical result of this polishing is shown in Fig. 2. Here a series of plates can be seen lying one upon the other. In several other specimens the plates parallel to the electron beam have been observed, behaving like slices of bread in a loaf. These edge views coupled with moire patterns indicate that the minimum plate thickness is 37 to 42A. This is equivalent to a concentration of 455 at. ppm of W if a simple cubic superlat-tice exists, or one tungsten atom every twelve iron atoms on the ordered plane. It was further noted that the base iron exhibited no signs of platelike structure. As the concentrations increased above 100 at. ppm W the amount of plate material increased. THE earliest mention of the sulphur deposits in what is now Culberson County, Texas, seems to be contained in "Explorations and Surveys for a Railroad Route from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean, United States War Department, 1853-54." Captain John Pope (he was not commissioned Captain until 1856) had charge of one of the divisions of the Survey. In his report on the geology of the route, William P. Blake noted the analysis of a greenish earthy powder from the bed of Delaware Creek, at the springs, which contained 18.28 per cent. of free sulphur. The report states: "From the chemical examination of the waters of the spring, by Dr. Booth, it appears that chloride of sodium is the principal solid ingredient, but considerable quantities of sulphide of sodium are present. * * * * * The waters from the springs examined by Dr. Booth were alkaline, but it is possible that some of the springs are acid; and in this case the precipitation of sulphur would ensue on the mixture of the acid waters with those charged with alkaline sulphurets and the origin of the deposits of sulphur would he thus explained." This is the first reference to the existence of sulphur in that region, the first mention of the character of the water found there and the first suggestion as to the' origin of the deposits. The possibility of the existence of acid waters was confirmed by E. M. Skeats, nearly 50 years later.1 In this publication, Skeats says that the water from the sulphur deposits in Section 11, Block 114,, Township 5, contains 79.08 grains of free sulphuric acid per gallon. This locality is about 13 miles (21 km.) south of Delaware Creek and about 35-miles (56 km.) east of the Delaware Springs. The next published reference to the existence of sulphur in Trans-Pecos Texas is in the First. Annual Report of the Geological Survey of Texas, 1889, page 226, where W. H. von Streeruwitz mentions that sulphur is found in that region, but gives no further information. In the

IN recent years, there have been many changes in mining operations in the Lake Superior district. To follow these trends on the Menominee Range of Michigan, information has been assembled from all of the iron informatior]mining operations in the area. There are 15 operating underground mines in the Iron River-Crystal Falls area of the Menominee Range. Within the past two years, two idle properties were reopened pasttwoyears,and are now producing, and a third and fourth are being reopened. Also, there are two siliceous openpits operated by independent companies outside this immediate area. Six companies operate the underground mines, employing some 1850 employees. Table I shows pertinent facts about these properties. During 1949, the largest mine in Iron County shipped 571,287 tons, and one of the newer mines shipped 39,378 tons, with a range total to 3,535,-373 tons. Since the Menominee Range was opened in the 1870's, the mines in Iron County have shipped 85,890,922 tons. From an operator's viewpoint rather than a geologist's, the ore is' classified as semi-hard, composed of hematite and limonite. It is not as soft as the ores of the Marquette Range nor is it as hard as the hard ores of the Marquette and Vermillion Ranges. The ore bodies have slate hanging walls and slate footwalls. In most cases the hanging walls and footwalls are soft and high in sulphur. The sulphur comes from pyrite, and these slates will ignite when piled more than 6 to 8 ft high. Ore is mined on this range by: 1—Sub-level stop-ing; 2—Shrinkage stoping; 3—Sub-level caving; 4— Block caving; 5—Top slicing. The predominance of these methods is in the order named. Underground drilling is important in the mining cycle. Some changes made and trends toward future changes fall into four categories: Drill bits, drill steel, drill machines, and compressed air pressures. Several types of bits have been tried and are in use. They include the detachable tungsten carbide, insert bit; the intraset steel bit, which is a conventional steel rod with tungsten carbide insert; the one-use bit; and the multiple-use bit. For many years, detachable multiple-use bits have been standard. In tests conducted recently to im- prove drilling efficiency, this bit was used as the basis for comparison. Under existing conditions, a multiple-use bit can be resharpened about three times before it is discarded. A thorough test of 2-in. tungsten carbide threaded bits was conducted under various ground conditions. 1—The drilled footage ranged from 48 to 600 ft per bit; averaging 357 ft per bit. Under these same conditions, a multiple-use bit ranged from 8 to 80 ft per bit. 2—The bit cost was greater for the insert bit in each case. 3—The average drilling speed for the insert bit was 12 in. in 62 sec and for the multiple-use bit was 12 in. in 64 sec. In a second test, 2V4 -in. tungsten carbide bits with the large 1 3/16-in. thread were used in moderately soft ground on a 152-lb drifting drill on a long feed jumbo. 1—The drilled footage ranged from 450 to 5000 ft per bit, averaging 1810 ft per bit. Under these same conditions, a multiple-use bit averaged 64 ft per bit. 2—The bit cost was reduced by the use of the insert bit. 3—No increase in drilling speed was recorded. 4—Minimum footage obtained was caused by thread failure. To improve the thread life, thread size on the rod was increased and the bit was attached to the rod with a pipe wrench. After this, bits failed in equal proportions because of cracked skirts, broken inserts, and gage loss. Tungsten carbide bits are now used in the operation where this second test was conducted because labor costs were lowered as a result of reducing the number of bits being changed by the miners. At the same operation and under the same conditions as the second test, 1Y4-in. insert bits with standard 1-in. threads were used. These bits did not drill much more than 300 ft before thread failure and were then welded to the rods and used until total failure. Sometimes this footage was considerable, sometimes it was not. LIGHTWEIGHT aggregates have been in use for many years in the United States but are now receiving more and more attention by manufacturers and users of concrete shapes. These shapes comprise building blocks, special forms, such as door sills, lintels, floor slabs, and beams. Lightweight aggregate also is adapted for monolithic construction. The increased building activity since termination of the war, together with the widespread shortage of cinders resulting from a general trend toward the use of oil and pulverized-coal fuels, has aggravated the situation. In some localities? new producers of lightweight aggregates have been stimulated to increased efforts to supply the demand. In addition, various estab- lishments of the United States Government have recently given attention to this problem. The National Bureau of Standards, in the Commerce Department, and the Bureau of Reclamation, in the Interior Department, have completed a series of tests on concretes made from some of the available commercial aggregates in order to evaluate their qualities. The tests have been made to focus attention on the desirable properties of good aggregates. This work was done at the request of the Technical Office of the National Housing Agency and Housing and Home Finance Agency. Some time previously, the former office had conducted a survey of the locations where lightweight aggregates are produced.' A study of this information discloses that the producing centers are widespread and that certain areas, notably the region east of the Mississippi River and especially the southeastern states in the sections along the Atlantic Coast, have only a limited number of such plants. The situation has been alleviated to some extent with new plants having been erected near Richmond, Va., and Lansford, Pa. Experiment Stations of the Federal Bureau of Mines at Tuscaloosa, Ala., Norris, Tenn., and College Park, Md., have investigated types and sources of potential raw materials such as clays, shales, and slates, as well as methods and procedures for utilizing these materials for their conversion into aggregates, and have published the data as a Bureau of Mines report.' Structural Uses of Lightweight Aggregates: Production of masonry blocks in the United States has averaged close to a billion units a year for the past three years, and of these it is estimated that more than 40 pct consisted of the lightweight type. It is anticipated that the future will witness an increase in this percentage in view of the superior insulating properties, decrease in dead weight, and ease of handling, transporting, and laying units of this type. Lightweight aggregates are used extensively in multistoried buildings in which the weight of the walls and floors is carried by a structural steel framework. The substitution of a lightweight concrete for normal concrete in a building of this type has brought about in many instances some or all of the following advantages:

There are important phenomena in rock and soil mechanics that cannot be explained in terms of theories of homogeneous, isotropic materials. Subsidence of strata about mine openings is an example. In-situ stress measurements in nonisotropic sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks is another. Patterns of joints, faults, fractures, and similar geologic features impart directional mechanical properties to rock masses that are locally isotropic or anisotropic. On the geologic scale, the non-homogeneity of composite rock masses may, in certain instances, be dealt with as homogeneous anisotropy. The mechanics of large rock masses can, therefore, be expected to involve considerations of anisotropy. The source of the anisotropy is not relevant. Once the scale of observation is selected and the material is defined accordingly, the analysis of stress and deformation proceeds without regard to the numerical values of the material constants. There are also important phenomena in rock and soil mechanics that cannot be explained in terms of linear elasticity, theory. For the mechanical description of anisotropic geologic materials capable of de- forming beyond the limit of purely elastic strains, a plasticity theory is required.

The First Conference of the Powder Metallurgy Committee convened in the East Foyer of the Hotel Waldorf-Astoria, New York City, at 9:45 a.m., on Feb. 21, 1944, Mr. John Wulff, General Chairman, presiding. THE CHAIRMAN.-In behalf of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers I welcome all members and guests to this conference on Powder Metallurgy. We hope that this meeting will give expert and novice in the field a chance for discussion. Unfortunately, the subject has been overemphasized by some, and, of late, severely criticized by others. We have here today powder producers, fabricators, and engineers of different viewpoints, who can make the meeting a success. Such success depends not only on the caliber of the papers presented but more so on the discussion. To give you time for a free exchange of views, the papers have been shortened purposely. With the hope that you will all benefit by this conference, I shall turn the meeting over to the Chairmen of the morning session, Mr. Roland P. Koehring, of Moraine Products Division of General Motors, and Dr. R. K. Waring, of the New Jersey Zinc Company. SESSION ON DESIGN FACTORS IN POWDER METALLURGY R. P. Koehring and R. K. Most metallurgists are well acquainted with the contributions already made to the study of metals by the use of X-rays. On the one hand, the radiographic method is constantly becoming of increasing importance as a nondestructive testing procedure, while on the other hand the techniques of X-ray diffraction have made important contributions to the fundamental knowledge in studies of phase diagrams, stress conditions, and so forth. A new, and as yet insufficiently appreciated, tool exists in the application of microradiography to alloy structures. This new procedure in many respects bears the same relation to microscopic investigations as does macroradiography to the gross inspection of metal surfaces. However, where macroradiography is used ordinarily to determine the soundness of the metal structure, this new method can be used not only to investigate micro-un-soundness but also to examine the distribution of the constituent elements within the body of the alloy. When combined with the normal procedures of microscopy, this offers a technique of great potential power. It is intended in this paper to present a few examples of copper-base alloys demonstrating the additional knowledge obtained from the microradiographic method. The detection of micro-unsoundness is demonstrated in Fig. I for a sample of cartridge brass as cast. The sample ap- peared quite sound when viewed under the microscope, but in reality was thickly populated with minute voids. This application of the method conforms in every way to conventional large-scale radiography and has been used to facilitate production of metal for vacuum devices.' The true potentialities of the technique are revealed by comparison of Figs, 2a and 2b, which are respectively a photomicrograph and a microradiograph of a cast alloy of 80 per cent Cu, 10 per cent Sn, 10 per cent Pb. The remarkable difference in appearance provides some concept of the additional information this method may yield when used as an auxiliary to microscopic studies. Fig. 2a shows two phases of the copper-tin system plus segregated_ lumps of lead. Fig. 2b, on the other hand, shows with exceptional clarity the actual dendritic growth of the metal crystals during solidification. The practice of microradiography depends upon the laws of absorption of X-rays. This subject has been reviewed thoroughly in recent papers,l,2,3 but for clarity a brief resume will be given here. As is well known, when a beam of X-rays is transmitted through a, layer of homogeneous material, the intensity is reduced according to the relation: where Il is the transmitted intensity, I0 is the incident intensity, µ1 is the linear absorption coefficient of the material, t1 is the thickness of the material.

A study was made of the effect of small additions of metallic solutes on the thermodynamic activity of zinc in dilute solution with molten bismuth in the range 450o to 650°C. The experimental measurements were made in a multielectrode galvanic cell using. a fused LiCl-KCl electrolyte. The activity of zinc in binary solution exhibited a strong positive deviation from Raoult's law and obeyed Henry 's law to at least 0.050 mole fraction. The ternary addition of lead, gallium, or indium increased the activity of zinc. Cadmium or tin additions slightly decreased the zinc activity. Copper, mercury, silver, or antimony caused moderate decreases, while gold strongly decreased the zinc activity. The results are expressed in terms of Wagner's interaction parameter ejZn and a second-order cross-interaction parameter. The interactions for copper, gold, silver, and antimony showed a linear dependence with reciprocal absolute temperature, while the other interactions were essentially independent of temperature over the experimental range. Since tin and antimony decreased the zinc activity, the hypothesis of a purely periodic variation with atomic number was rejected. A semiquantitative explanation was possible with a free-electron model when relative electronegativities were used to express changes in the electron/atom ratio caused by the solute addition. Random solution and quasi-chemical models correctly predicted the majority of the interactions for which binary data were available to apply them. A knowledge of the thermodynamic interactions in liquid (and solid) metallic solutions is of considerable theoretical and experimental interest in the formulation of quantitative thermodynamic relations for metallurgical processes. The approaches to defining the interactions may be either phenomenological (i.e., "What mathematical function adequately describes observed behavior and permits extrapolation to new situations?") or theoretical, such as a specific model

MOST of us are far .from home, and yet our Japanese hosts- have made us feel very much at home. Here in the Orient we engineers are .learning a new meaning for the word "orientation"- hereafter that engineering term will be a synonym for gracious hospitality, and "to orient" will mean to turn a whole country over to the World Engineering Congress. Mere geographic distance is no longer able to separate nations, for the conquest of distance is one of the triumphs of 'modern engineering. We of the Americas are fortunate in the position of our continents: with their shores lapped by the waves of two oceans, we face' two great civilizations, the' Occidental and the Oriental, and thus we can share the intellectual resources of these two older cultures.

Bore surfaces of used guns commonly show a pattern of cracks in various degrees of development. It has been suggested that these cracks may aid erosion by providing channelways for the gases, eventually leading to the tearing out of blocks of metal. Under the general studies of gun erosion conducted at the Geophysical Laboratory it appeared desirable to consider this factor, and to determine the resistance to surface cracking offered by gun steel and by various other materials that might be used in the bores of guns. Method and Apparatus In order to make such a determination it is necessary to have (I) an arrangement in which the surface to be studied can be subjected to conditions similar to those in a gun with respect to temperature, pressure (developed by explosion gases), composition of the gases and length of time the surface is exposed to the gases; and (2) a specimen that can be examined readily after any number of shots, and then fired again, if necessary. The first of these conditions can be met by using an explosion vessel designed by H. S. Roberts of the Geophysical Laboratory. Fig I shows a cross-section of the apparatus. The "gun" G from which the charge is fired is made from the receiver of a caliber 0.30 army rifle, M1903, and the charges are prepared in caliber 0.30 cartridge cases. The test specimen S is held in place by a cone-shaped plug P and by a steel bridge B which is bolted to the outside of the explosion vessel on either side of the section shown. The plug, in turn, is held in place by a screw collar C. Maximum pressure is controlled by a brass rupture disk R. Part of the explosion gases flow past the two flat areas on S. Temperature and composition of gases, and the time before the rupture disk breaks, can be controlled by amount and kind of powder used, and pressure can be controlled by using rupture disks of different thickness. While the explosion vessel used was not designed so that temperature and pressure could be measured, in other vessels of closely similar size and shape containing proportionate charges of the same kind of powder as that used for standard testing procedure, values of 2700°K and 50,000 psi were obtained. Since the orifices past the flat areas on the plug are small compared to the rupture disk hole (I:I6), most of the gas goes out through the rupture disk when it breaks. The amount that goes by the plug depends on (I) the pressure attained before the rupture disk breaks and (2) the time it takes for this pressure to be built UP. THE content of this paper is a presentation of the diffusivity theory for the calculation of the water drive on an oil reservoir in which b the history of reservoir pressure with time are the essential parameters for the determination of the rate and cumulative water encroachment into a field. The paper is divided into two parts-the main portion and appendix. The main body is essentially the application of the principles underlined here to actual field data. It consists of the work plots of the radial-flow case, and includes a discussion of an illustrated problem for which the water-drive calculations are treated in conjunction with the volumetric-balance equation. The appendix is a mathematical treatment of the linear, radial, and spherical cases of water influx into a reservoir.
