IN an earlier series of studies on 18-8 stainless steel at 600°, 700°, and 800°C.1 one pretreatment was used throughout; viz., 15 min. in hydrogen at 950°C., followed by an air quench. Several manufacturers of this alloy since have expressed doubt as to the suitability of the temperature employed, recommending instead the more customary Strauss treatment as promising superior results. In this subsequent investigation on the effects of the temperature of pretreatment several interesting points have arisen, which are described in this paper. Previous work on our equipment had shown a marked difference between alloys of "similar chemical composition" that had been manu-factured by different companies. Accordingly, one mill-bar length was selected from which to prepare all specimens. It could then be assumed that any marked differences in creep characteristics would be due to effects resulting from variations in the pretreatment of the alloy. The material was furnished by the Allegheny-Ludlum Steel Co. in the form of 5/16-in, dia. rod, finished by air cooling from a mill anneal at 1950°F. (1066°C.). It was analyzed only for the elements shown: carbon, 0,07 per cent; chromium, 18.73; nickel, 9.46; manganese, 0.40. Three pretreating temperatures were chosen, the specimens being held for 15 min. in hydrogen at either: (1) 1150°C., to conform to the recom-mended Strauss treatment; (2) 950°C., to compare with the results of previous tests; or (3) 750°C., to initiate precipitation of carbides in the material before testing. As the test cross sections were only 1/8 -in. dia., air cooling followed the annealing treatment. These treatments per-mitted two direct comparisons: (1) between the 1150° and 950°C. treat-ments to indicate the effect of grain size when all carbides were probably in solution at the start of the test; and (2) between the 950° and 750°C. treatments to indicate the effect of carbide "nucleation" for similar grain sizes.

The data presented indicate that the critical shear stress and strain-hardening Thedatapresentedrate of a zinc monocrystal depend on the orientation of its slip direction with respect to its external boundaries. The tendency of a crystal to form deformation bands also depends on its shape. THE plastic behavior of pairs of zinc monocrystals in which both members of the respective pairs had the same orientation with respect to the longitudinal axis, but each had different orientations with respect to their rectangular external shapes, were compared in this investigation. The purpose of the investigation was to see what influence the shape or surface of a zinc crystal has on its mechanical properties. In a previous investigation of triangular zinc monocrystals,1 anomalous axial twisting was observed which seemed to be related to the triangular shape of the crystals. Wolff,' in 400°C tensile tests of rectangular rock-salt crystals bounded by cubic cleavage planes, found that, of the four equivalent slip systems, the two with the "shorter" slip directions yielded and produced slip lines at lower stresses than the other two. This observation and the work of Dommerich³ as formulated by Smekal4 as a "new slip condition" for rock-salt: "among two or more slip systems permitted by the shear stress law, with reference to the formation of visible slip lines by large individual glides, that slip system is preferred which has the shortest effective slip direction." More recently, Wu and Smoluchowski5 reported essentially the same effect for ribbon-like (20x2x0.2 mm) aluminum crystals at room temperature. Experimental Chemically pure zinc (99.999 pct Zn), purchased from the New Jersey Zinc Co., was the raw material. Glass envelopes, containing graphite molds and zinc, were evacuated while hot enough to outgas the graphite but not melt the zinc. At a vacuum of about 0.2 micron the envelopes were sealed off and then lowered through a furnace at 1 in. per hr so as to melt and resolidify the zinc and produce mono-crystals. One-half of one of the molds is shown in Fig. la. Each mold consisted of four pieces from a cylindrical graphite rod that was split longitudinally and transversely at its midpoints. Rectangular milled grooves 0.050 in. deep and % in. wide formed the mold cavity when the split halves were assembled with twisted wires. Fig. lb shows the specimen shape obtained when the top and bottom mold-halves were rotated 90" with respect to each other. Good fits prevented leakage and excess zinc was necessary to provide enough liquid head to fill the mold completely. In removing soft crystals from the molds it was impossible to avoid small amounts of bending. However, manipulations were carried out whenever possible with the crystals protected by grooved brass blocks. All specimens were annealed prior to testing. From the top and bottom sections of each crystal, X-ray specimens and tensile specimens 7 to 8 cm long were sawed. The tensile specimens were annealed inside evacuated tubes for 1 hr at 375°C. Next the crystals were cleaned and polished by 2-min dips in a solution of 22 pct chromic acid, 74 pct water, 2.5 pct sulphuric acid, and 1.5 pct glacial acetic acid.' Cleaning was followed by a 10-sec dip in a 10 pct caustic solution, then washed in water and alcohol, and dried. This treatment results in a bright surface covered by an invisible oxide film. The testing grips were a slotted type with set screws and were supported in a V-block during the mounting operations in order to avoid bending the crystals. A schematic diagram of the recording tensile-testing machine is shown in Fig. 2. The machine has been described elsewhere.' The head speed was 0.3 mm per sec for all tests. The crystal orientations were determined by the Greninger X-ray back-reflection method with an estimated accuracy of 1. Description of Crystal Geometry A schematic picture of a rectangular zinc mono-crystal is shown in Fig. 3. ABD designates the front edge of a basal plane (0001) of the crystal, the only active slip plane for zinc at room temperature. Of the three possible (2110) slip directions, the active one is indicated by an arrow. Cartesian coordinates are taken parallel to the specimen edges. It was hypothesized that solid-state point defects should alter the flotation properties of solids. Tests conducted on pure AgCl and AgCl doped with CdC12 show that atomic point defects exhibit an important role in the floatability of AgC1. Tests conducted on PbS doped with Ag2s or Bi2S3, also show that the defect structures resulting from these dope additions, i.e., a combination of electronic and atomic point defects, contribute significantly to the flotation of PbS. IT has been established that flotation occurs only when a finite contact angle exists between a solid and a gaseous bubble.' This angle, measured through the liquid phase, is expressed by the equation where the are inter facial free energies and the subscripts S, G, and L represent solid, gas, and liquid phases, respectively. As is seen in Eq. [I] three interface free energies, sG, sl, and GL, enter into the contact angle equation. Therefore, any variation in these energies which sufficiently varies the contact angle will, in turn, vary flotation processes. Changes made in any of the phases concerned, i.e., gas, liquid, or solid phase, are reflected through the changes occurring in two of the surface energy terms. Thus, a change in the liquid composition would be noted in sL and GL, and it is this phase, the liquid, which is most frequently altered in flotation studies., Changes in the solid phase must be reflected through the changes occurring in the sG and sL terms. In particular, it is hypothesized that changes in the surface concentrations of point defects in the solid-phase will alter the sG and sL terms which, in turn, will be reflected by flotation results. As an illustration of this hypothesis one may consider the defect structure and the flotation of AgC1. The bulk defect structure of AgCl is essentially one involving equal number of cation vacancies and interstitial cations.3 Upon adding CdC1, to AgC1, a greater number of silver ion vacancies are created in the bulk of the crystal.4 On the surface of the crystal the smaller binding forces and the free space accomodations may also allow for the creation of "surface interstitial anions", which will be designated as ad-anions. Thus, the point defect structure of the surface of AgCl doped with CdCl, will consist of cation vacancies and/or adanions. If the molecular forces responsible for the surface energies, ?SG and ?sL, are significantly altered by the presence of these surface point defects, then differences in flotation results will be noted as the concentration of these defects is varied. The defects present in AgCl are predominantly atomic in nature. In the case of PbS both electronic and atomic defects are present.5 This compound conducts electrically by either electrons or electron holes depending upon whether excess lead or excess sulfur is present. Upon disolving BiS3 in stoichio-metric PbS, one increases the concentration of cation vacancies and the number of electron carriers in the bulk of the crystal.5" At the surface, the possibility of ad-anions must also be considered. Conversely, upon dissolving AgS in stoichiometric PbS one increases the concentration of interstitial cations and the number of electronhole carriers in the bulk of the crystal.5,6' At the surface the interstitial cations will be designated as ad-cations. Thus, the point defect structure of the surface of a PbS crystal doped with Bi2S3 will consist of a number of cation vacancies and/or ad-anions and an excess of electrons. Conversely the point defects on the surface of a PbS crystal doped with Ag2S will consist of a number of ad-cations and an excess of electron holes. Again, as in the case of AgC1, should the molecular forces responsible for the magnitude of the interface free energies, ?sG and ?sL, be significantly altered by the presence of these surface defects then significant differences in flotation results will be noted as the concentration of these defects is varied. EXPERIMENTAL To test this hypothesis flotation tests were conducted on pure and doped AgCl and on PbS doped with either Bi2S3 or Ag2S. Preparation of the AgCl samples was performed as follows: AgCl and weighed amounts of CdC1, were melted in a porcelain crucible. The melt was then forced through a capillary tube and the particles emitted solidified in air as they fell about 1.5 meters. Data are presented which show that fractions of varying densities-from the same coals are oxidized at different rates by nitric acid. From oxidation data, the approximate quantity of "bright" and "dull" components may be calculated. Definite relationships between oxidation rate and rank are shown for density fractions from at least two bituminous coals.

IN powder metallurgy it has often been observed that shrinkage may occur in one direction and growth in another during sintering. Even in long-time sintering experiments the rate of shrinkage may be different in different parts of the compact. In the fabrication of some parts requiring a constant permeability it is even questionable in some cases whether pressing from one direction should be attempted. These observations require for their interpretation a more detailed study of green or pressed density than has heretofore been available. Usually average density measurements of the whole compact are made and in some cases carefully cut sections are measured. A different approach to the problem was first mentioned by Rakowski1 and also used by Balshin.2 Balshin's diagram is reproduced in Fig r and schematically shows the result of pressing three layers of metal powder with fine intervening layers of graphite. The retarding effect of the die walls and a qualitative example of the density distribution is evident. More quantitative information about the distribution of density within a cold-pressed powder compact would be useful in showing the variation in density in compacts as influenced by the type of powder, shape of die, lubrication during the process, and other variables. Furthermore, information about the cracking of cold-pressed compacts may be obtained from an analysis of the stress distribution within a powder compact, and some information about the stress distribution can be obtained in turn from the density and strain distributions. A more detailed report on some of the present experiments appears in reference 3. PRESENT INVESTIGATION In order to ascertain the density gradients in cold-pressed metal powders, a deformable lead grid within the powder was employed. After pressing in cylindrical dies the ejected compact was radiographed, giving a pattern of the deformed grid. From the radiograph density and deformation from point to point is readily measured. From the radiograph strain distribution and stress trajectories were also determined. The latter also permits the determination of the coefficient of friction at the die wall. This technique indicates that the densest part of a compact pressed from one side is at the top outer circumference and the least dense region at the bottom circumference near the stationary plunger. For some heights of compacts the density at the axis is such that the lower density is at the top rather than at the bottom. So irregular a density distribution is due primarily to die-wall friction. As the ratio of diameter to height of compact is increased the die walls play a correspond¬ingly smaller role. More uniform density

The progress of primary recrystallization has been studied in alloys of nickel with 0.01, 0.1, and 1.0 at. pct Ta. It can be shown that in one particular alloy containing 0.1 Ta and 0.02 02 a large grain structure (0.5 mm diameter) could he developed by primary recrystallization in thin sheetswhich were cold-worked to 97.5 pct reduction in thickness. Electron transmission microscopy demmstrates that this phenonmena was linked to the occurrence of fine precipitates at subboundaries. A discussion of how fine precipitates can exert under certain circumstances a rather distinct retarding effect on nucleation rate is included. IN a former investigation, the recrystallization and texture formation in a series of binary nickel alloys including pure nickel were studied.' Nickel alloys with some tantalum added displayed peculiarities during primary recrystallization which have been studied in more detail by the present investigation. The alloys were prepared by powder-metallurgy techniques similar to the previous investigations.' Pure metal powders were thoroughly mixed to obtain alloys with 0.01, 0.1, and 1.0 at. pct Ta, referred to as alloy A, B, or C, respectively. The metallic impurities were kept below 0.005 at. pct except iron and cobalt with slightly higher values, by using highly purified nickel and tantalum powders.' The mixtures were pressed into bars and sintered at a temperature of 1300°C. The sintering atmosphere was either high vacuum, dry hydrogen, or wet hydrogen. The sintered rectangular bars were rolled 60 pct to a thickness of 3 mm, then annealed under dry hydrogen at 1000°C and again cold-rolled to about 97.5 pct reduction of thickness. After this heavy deformation, the sheet thickness was 0.07 5 mm. In order to study primary recrystallization which occurred in measurable times between 400" and 600°C, samples of the rolled sheets were annealed in a salt bath at various temperatures for various times in order to study the progress of recrystallization by hardness measurements and microscopic examination. For optical observation, the samples were polished and etched in a solution of 65 cu cm HNO3, and 18 cu cm acetic acid in 20 to 100 cu cm H2O, depending of the particular sample and annealing treatment. For transmission electron microscopic observations, thin foils were prepared by the combined window and Bollmann techniques.273 The electrolyte consisted of 23 pct perchloric acid and 77 pct acetic acid held at 15°C. Polishing was performed at a current density of 0.4 amp per sq cm. The examination of the thin films was accomplished by a Siemens Elmiscope-type electron microscope operating with an accelerating voltage of 100 kv. RESULTS The progress of primary recrystallization was very accurately followed in these alloys in order to establish the time when recrystallization started and ended during an isothermal anneal. Table I gives some of the data obtained by these studies. The time for beginning is a mean value, where somewhat less than 5 pct of the matrix has recrys-tallized. The end of recrystallization is the time when at least 95 pct of the matrix has recrystal-lized. Listed are three different B alloys, with 0.1 Ta distinguished by different sintering atmospheres which influence the rate of primary recrystallization. By the above method, the state of the grain structure when primary recrystallization was completed, but grain coarsening had not started, could be clearly defined. The average grain diameter of the recrystallized matrix is also given in Table I. The grain size did not depend on the temperature of the isothermal anneal. With one exception the grain size of the primary recrystallized matrix was found to be rather fine

The magnetic susceptibilities of some ores and the major rock formations of the Precambrian Belt Supergroup in the Coeur d'Alene mining district were determined both in the laboratory by the use of the Gouy method and in the field with a Bison susceptibility unit. Trace element analysis of the same group of rock samples was also made using the atomic adsorption technique. Results of this preliminary study indicate that some correlation exists between the magnetic susceptibilities and the various rock formations. This may be useful for regional mapping and mineral exploration.

The Butler Mine property is situated in the vicinity of Pittston, in the Wyoming coal-field of Pennsylvania. The coal has been ' worked out from the fourteen-foot or Baltimore vein for a number of years on part of the tract, the old chambers remaining open as when originally abandoned. This vein outcrops on the Butler prop erty, and is nowhere more than sixty feet below the surface of the ground on the line of the cut-off to be described. Above the four teen-foot vein and about, say midway, between it and the surface of the ground, there is another small vein or rider of coal, about twelve inches in thickness. The rock between the two veins is a carbon aceous slate, about twenty-five feet in thickness. Above the smaller vein is a bed of sandstone, varying in thickness, but generally not less than from eight to ten feet. This sandstone is also carbonaceous, but the proportion of carbon is much less than in the slate below. Both rocks have been analyzed, and before the next Institute meet ing, the writer hopes to be able to furnish the exact proportions. The sandstone is overlaid with debris up to the surface of the ground. Some time during the spring of 1876, it was found that the coal left in the worked-out mine had been set on fire, and that the fire was gradually spreading. Inquiry developed the fact that the fire had originally been started by a woman, who had taken up her abode in an old tunnel leading into the workings. Owing to some delay in the early attempts made to extinguish the fire, it finally gained such headway that no ordinary means were found to be effectual. Finally, Mr. C. F. Conrad, civil and mining engineer, of Pittston, Penna., was called in as consulting engineer. He advised the making of a thorough cut through such portion of the old workings as had not been reached by the fire. It was found by survey that this cut could be limited to a length of about one thousand two hundred feet, as the vein faulted on both sides, and that the greatest depth of the cut would be about sixty feet. Subsequently it was decided to tunnel part of the way, thus saving the deepest portion of the cut. In 1856-7, there occurred a fire in the same mine. Two stone walls in V-shape running from the apex of the V towards the out crop, were built to cot the fire 06 and these walls were carried as far as the vein had at that time been worked. DURING the Revolutionary War an iron mining industry was born in the Adirondack region of New York State. New York State ores provided the iron from which were forged the links of the chain that, strung across the Hudson River, successfully kept British vessels from ascending. The industry flourished for a while and then became dormant. For the successful prosecution of World War II, the magnetite mines were revived and given considerable aid in the form of government financial support. The complete story appeared in a special issue Of MINING AND METALLURGY published in November 1943. Now, almost four years later, it is interesting to see that these "war babies" were not really such but are well-established enterprises with a bright future. A ten-day trip through the Adirondack region and to St. Lawrence County dispelled all thoughts that mining in northern New York State is a transitory industry. In addition to substan-

DuRing the summer of 1919, the late Dr. Henry M. Howe, then Chairman of the Division of Engineering of the National Research Council, organized a committee to obtain a better insight into the behavior of carbon steels under the influence of various treatments by a proper control of the time and temperature factors. During part of 1919 and 1920, work in connection with this investigation was carried on at Dr. Howe's laboratory at Bedford Hills, N. Y. During 1921 there was an enforced hiatus in the work, occasioned by the illness which resulted in Dr. Howe's death in 1922. At that time one of the present authors compiled the results of the work which had been done and this was published in 1923.' Following the publication of this work, it seemed desirable to carry on in the same manner an investigation of steel of C 0.75 per cent., which steel had not been as fully treated as had the other steels of C 0.34 and 0.52 per cent., used in the published work. Furthermore, certain unusual results have been obtained in the treatment of C 0.52 per cent. steel by quenching and drawing, and repetition of this part of the work seemed advisable. This has been done during the past year at the School of Mines and Metallurgy of the University of Missouri at Rolla, Mo., by a cooperative undertaking of the School and the Bureau of Mines, working in conjunction with the Committee on Heat Treatment of Carbon Steels of the National Research Council. The present paper is a report of the results obtained in this work.

Weed concentrator in Butte, Mont., The Anaconda Co. has achieved substantial increases in through- put tonnage, plus better recoveries as a result of the finer feed size to subsequent flotation operations. If steel grinding is so superior to autogenous grinding, why wasn't it chosen in the first place? Briefly, here's why:

WHEN I agreed to accept your Committee's suggestion that I talk to you at this meeting on the future of copper, lead and zinc mining, I could not help wondering why I had been chosen to be a prophet. Knowing the pious nature of your committee, I thought I had better look up and see what the Bible says about being a prophet, and what the dictionary definition of a prophet is. The word "prophet" comes from the Greek and is defined as "one who speaks through a divine inspiration." Also, in the Gospel of Saint Matthew, Christ tells us that a prophet is "not without honor save in his own country and in his own house." That gave me pause until I remembered that after all, I had started my professional career as a Naval Architect, not as a Mining Engineer, and consequently, this might be a clue to the fact that the eminent geologists of this society, who know infinitely more about the world's crust than I do, were passed over in this assignment. In thinking back, I then remembered that the first really successful prophet was Noah and that Noah was a Naval Architect. Here then was the answer. One more quotation from the Bible I shall take as my text: In Ecclesiastes, chapter I, verse 9: "The thing that hath been is that which shall be." Joseph (University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, Minn.)—Mr. Killian is to be commended for his inquiry as to why a decrease of 15.3 pct in coke consumption was accompanied by a decrease of only 1.9 pct in the CO/CO, ratio of the top gas. Although I encouraged him in his efforts to find a more significant and meaningful carbon-gas ratio, the method, calculations, and conclusions originated entirely with the author. Whether we agree entirely with the assumptions underlying his corrected ratio, I think we can all agree that a better ratio is needed, and that he deserves credit for recognizing the need and for doing something about it. To be most useful, the CO/CO, ratio for the top gas should reflect the way in which the carbon is gasified in the furnace, particularly the degree of oxidation and the extent of heat release. The effect of CO, from the decomposition of the limestone and the effect of the reaction of CO and water vapor in the upper part of the furnace on the quality of top gas should be isolated from the effect of more basic reactions such as ore reduction and solution loss. The reduction of sufficient iron oxide to produce a ton of pig iron and the accompanying changes in the proportions of the carbon gases can be expressed on a mol basis as follows: 16.5FeA + 16.5CO - 33FeO + 16.5CO, [1] 33FeO + 33.0CO = 33Fe + 33CO. [2] The CO, from eq 1 normally escapes from the furnace because it does not react with coke at the temperature of its release. However, as much as 50 pct of the CO, from eq 2 may react with coke because it is released at temperatures above 1000°C: 16.5CO. + 16.5CO2 = 33CO [3] Thus we see that the gasification of 16.5 mols or about 200 lb of C in solution loss will regenerate as much CO as is required for the last stage of reduction. The pronounced effect of reaction 3 on the final proportions of CO and CO, in the gas stream is obvious. It also follows that reaction 3 materially alters the heat release but it cannot be entirely eliminated in Lake ore practice. A previous study indicates that 100 lb of solution loss may be necessary to maintain the reducing power of the gas. A reduction of 100 lb from the normal level of 200 lb would mean that over 1,-000,000 additional Btu are released in the process. The 100 lb of additional carbon which will be burned at the tuyeres will release 437,000 Btu and the absorption of 583,000 Btu by eq 3 would be prevented. One of the chief objectives of sized ore burdens and more uniform distribution of the gas stream is to minimize solution loss by completing reduction higher in the furnace and in turn to release the maximum amount of heat from the carbon charged. It was odd, indeed, to find that the use of sized ore and sinter in the careful tests reported by Dobscha had changed the CO/CO2 ratio very little. The author has stressed the close correlation between his corrected CO/CO, ratio and production. A correlation of fuel consumption and the CO/CO, might be more logical. Fuel consumption on the prepared ore burden decreased 15.3 pct whereas the corrected CO/CO2 ratio decreased 19.0 pct. Although this agreement between the reduction in fuel and the reduction in corrected CO/CO2 ratio is not as close as the correlation with tonnage, it indicates the corrected ratio is superior to the normal ratio which decreased less than 4 pct. Some adjustment should be made for the reaction: CO + H2O = CO2 + H2 —700Btu [41 because there is evidence to indicate that about one half of the hydrogen is formed in the upper 21 ft of
