The partial molar heats of solution at infinite dilution in tin of aluminum at 300° and 350°C and of gallium, indium, and thallium at 240°, 300°, and 350°C have been measured by tin solution calori-metry. Aluminum, gallium, and thallium are endo-thermic on solution; indium is exothermic. Any temperature dependence of the heats of solution lies within the experimental scatter. Over the dilute ranges investigated, only aluminum has a measurable change in its heat of solution with composition. HEATS of solution of one element in another reflect the interaction between them. The investigation of partial molar heats of solution in dilute alloys is of particular interest as the properties of the solvent are altered to only a limited extent by the presence of the solute and also as the interaction between solute atoms is small. When the heats of solution of a related series of elements in a solvent are known, a systematic comparison may be made. In the investigation reported here, the partial molar heats of solution of the Group III elements aluminum, gallium, indium, and thallium in dilute solution in tin were measured. This work follows an investigation of the heats of solution in tin of the Group IB elements.' EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Materials. Samples of gallium, indium, and thallium were obtained from Johnson, Mathey and Co., Ltd. Indium and thallium were supplied as wire, 1.6 mm in diam; gallium was in the form of irregular pieces. The supplier reported the following minimum purities: gallium—99.95 pct; indium—99.99 pct; thallium—99.99 pct. The aluminum, obtained from Alcoa Research Laboratories, was reported to be 99.995 pct pure. The tin was supplied by Baker and Co., Inc.; the reported analysis indicated a tin content of at least 99.96 pct with lead as principal impurity. Calorimeter. this description will cover only the essential features of the calorimeter with special attention to modifications made since an earlier description was published.' A Dewar flask containing the tin bath was held in a constant-temperature bath of a near-eutectic mixture of lithium, sodium, and potassium nitrates. This bath, which was stirred vigorously, was heated by a primary resistance winding in the container wall and by a secondary winding immersed in the salt. The voltage supplied to both windings was stabilized. The temperature of the salt bath was controlled by means of a platinum resistance thermometer in one arm of a Wheatstone bridge. The light from a mirror galvanometer in the bridge circuit fell on a photocell which controlled the current in a saturable reactor in series with the secondary winding. In this manner, the temperature of the salt bath was controlled to ±0.003°C and that of the tin bath to at least ±0.002°C. Each of these temperatures was measured by two iron-constantan thermocouples in series, coiled in a helix to minimize heat loss and immersed in the salt and tin baths in protective sheaths. The temperature of the laboratory was kept constant to ± 1°C during a run. Specimens were dropped into the tin bath from an addition arm held at O°C which was part of the cal-orimetric system. The system was evacuated to about 0.02 1 to minimize oxidation and to reduce transfer of heat. The bath was stirred by a glass stirrer introduced through a double Wilson seal. The samples were scraped clean before weighing, which was carried out as rapidly as possible. Each sample was immediately placed in the evacuated addition arm to minimize contamination. These precautions were especially necessary with aluminum. After the runs with gallium and thallium at all temperatures and with indium at 240° and 350°C (Series I) were completed and before the runs with indium at 300°C and aluminum at 300° and 350°C (Series 11) were begun the following changes were made. The shape of the Dewar flask was changed so as to result in a lower surface to volume ratio of the bath and at the same time the amount of tin was reduced from 500 to 400 g. The paddle type stirrer was replaced by a helical screw and the rate of stirring was increased to about 150 to 200 rpm.

In preparing the Steep Rock Lake iron ore body for mining, it was necessary to drain Steep Rock Lake. Using diamond drills, a cut 1800 ft long, 100 ft wide, and maximum depth of 95 ft amounting to 300,000 cu yd of material, was excavated in Greenstone to provide a drainage channel. This was done under the general contractor C. A. Pitts, of Toronto, who in turn employed a diamond drill contractor, Boyles Bros., to do the drilling. The method of excavation was selected be- cause a clean square cut and grade could be maintained in the bottom of the channel. Bootlegged holes would have left blocks of rock in the corners which would have created a situation which would have become progressively worse as the open cut advanced from one side of the ridge to the other.

AT elevated temperatures the oxide of silver is unstable in the air at atmospheric pressure, consequently no external oxide scale forms upon pure silver under conditions of high-temperature annealing When small quantities of certain alloying elements are present in the silver, the formation of a thin external scale is possible' and in addition there may form a subscale composed of the oxide of the solute element precipitated within the body of the silver Norbury2 and Leroux and Raub3 have reported internal oxidation (subscale formation) in alloys of silver with 2, 7 5, and 30 per cent of copper The presence of the subscale is believed to be responsible, at least in part, for the objectionable "fire mark" in Sterling silver' Several other alloys of silver, after oxidizing heat-treatments, are known to exhibit undesirable polishing characteristics that may be the result of internal oxidation Except for the absence of an external scale of silver oxide, it is to be anticipated that silver alloys will prove to be very similar in their oxidation behavior to the alloys of copper, the oxidation characteristics of which have been studied in some detail 5,6 The present research confirms this anticipation The oxidation of a series of 20 dilute alloys of silver has been studied metallographically, some types of subscale not encountered among the copper alloys have been found Instances of internal oxidation in alloys of most of the metals of the I-b and VIII groups of the periodic system are on record, but evidence of this type of oxidation in alloys of the metals of the intermediate groups is lacking A number of the metals of the intermediate group, among them cadmium, lead, tin, and zinc, appear to provide the conditions essential to subscale formation, i e , they form oxides with a relatively low negative free energy of formation, they dissolve other metals that form more stable oxides, and, presumably, oxygen will diffuse through them In a study of 4o alloys of these white metals only a few cases of internal oxidation have been found The probable reasons for this difference in behavior will be discussed presently EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Silver -The silver alloys employed in the oxidation studies were prepared in heats of 30 grams each from high-purity silver (99 993 per cent Ag)* and the purest avail-

The action of mercury on stressed brass to produce cracks was known before Moore, Beckinsale and Mallinson1 showed that actual season cracking did not occur spontaneously but could be induced by ammonia. These investigators studied other substances, including diphenylamine, without finding that anything other than ammonia could cause season cracking Grimston2 reported season cracking in cartridge cases stored in wooden boxes wetted with dilute sulphuric acid pickling solution. Season cracking associated with sulphur dioxide, water vapor and air has been reported by Johnston,3 although he reported that trimethylamine and pyridine did not cause cracking. Jevons4 has ascribed season cracking of brass in certain instances to trimethylamine, "aldehyde amine," "ketone amine" and pyridine, but no experimental work was done evidently to prove this definitely. Pyridine was investigated by Morris,5 who found it to have considerable cracking power. In the present investigation, the object was a qualitative evaluation of a number of representative amines with respect to their ability to cause season cracking. Thus it was desired only that an appreciable vapor pressure of each amine be obtained in order to make the test as severe as possible, without attempting to test equivalent concentrations for comparative purposes. MEthods Specimens TWO types of specimen were used: 1. Unannealed 70-30 brass CUPs formed from 0.040-in. thick sheet. Height of cup Was 13/8 in. and diameter was 17/8 inches. 2. First draw pieces of caliber .50 cartridge cases in the unannealed condition (70-30 brass)- The cups were representative of a thin wall and thin base specimen, whereas the draw pieces have a thick base (1/4 in.) and a thick wall (approximately 3/32 in.). Both types of specimens contained high residual stress and cracked in less than one minute in a solution of I per cent mercurous nitrate and I per cent nitric acid provided that this was receded by a 30-sec. pickle in 40 per cent nitric acid. Specimens were prepared as follows: (1) degreased in trichlorethylene, (2) rinsed in H2O, (3) pickled 5 min. in 10 per cent by volume H2SO4 (1.84 SP. gr.), (4) rinsed in H2O, and (5) dried. Amirtes Tested In selecting the amines, representatives of the three series of amines, and one series of substituted amines were chosen. The aliphatic series was represented by the methyl and ethyl primary, secondary and tertiary amines. These are the simplest aliphatic amines. For the aromatic series, the phenyl primary, secondary and tertiary amines were selected as being the simplest. The heterocyclic series was represented by pyridine, which is a simple heterocyclic base (tertiary amine).

A Reconnaissance of the manganese- and chrome-ore deposits of Cuba was made by the writer, as a representative of the U. S. Geological Survey, in company with Mr. Albert Burch of the Bureau of Mines, under instructions of the Secretary of the Interior, in the spring of 1918. The Cuban Government courteously detailed Sr. E. I. Montoulieu, a mining engineer connected with the Treasury Department, to act as escort and associate throughout the work on the island. The object of the study was to obtain authentic information for use of the United States Government as to the location, character, quantity, and availability of the manganese- and chrome-ore deposits in Cuba. Accordingly, the work comprised examination of such deposits as seemed to be of promise, without regard to stage of development, with a view to a determination of the quantity and quality of ore likely to become available for shipment during 1918 and 1919, and of the tonnage of ore in reserve. Wile it was possible to visit most of the deposits that seemed to be of promise, there was not sufficient time to visit all that were brought to our attention, some of which may have merit. Moreover, the necessity for paying particular attention to the ore deposits and the mines precluded the possibility of making more general studies of the geology of the region, and of making satisfactory collections of country rock and of fossils, and so for other details as to the geography and geology of Cuba the reader is referred to the report by Hayes, Vaughan, and Spencer.l Mr. Burch returned to the United States about 10 days in advance of the writer, who continued, in company with Sr. Montoulieu, investigations of reported deposits in Pinar del Rio, Matanzas, and Santa Clara Provinces. On his arrival in Washington, Mr. Burch submitted to the Director of the Bureau of Mines a summary of the results of the work to date. Later the writer published, as Press Bulietin 190. 380 of the U. LIKE a runner catching his second wind, the mining geologist in 1944 has had some opportunity to appraise the result of three years of active and intense search for the metallic sinews of war and peace. The war period has been one of physical activity and accumulation of new data but has not so far resulted in the announcement of any profound or revolutionary theoretical concepts or techniques. Most technical publications during the year have been either descriptive or statistical. A review of accomplishments during the war years, although affording some measure of satisfaction in individual cases or regarding production of certain metals or' ores, is far from justifying any feeling of complacency regarding the growth of the profession either in fundamental knowledge or in application. During 1944 an abundant supply of all metals and minerals flowed steadily to smelters and fabricating plants. Also, during this and preceding years, adequate stock piles for war needs, in view of the improved foreign and domestic supply situation, were accumulated in many metals in such quantities that the mining industry has become concerned not with the problem of supply but with the effect these accumulated stocks, if maintained, might have on the postwar market. These considerations culminated in the enactment by Congress of the Surplus Disposal Act, which, admittedly a tempo-

Salt, or halite, has a long and most varied history. While we know the Chinese were producing salt as early as 3000 B.C., the first written reference to salt appears in the book of Job recorded about 2250 B.C., which reads: "Can nothing which is unsavory be eaten without salt?" We do not know when man first used or realized that he needed salt. Perhaps one of our early Eolithic ancestors noted a piece of salt shining along the shore of a salt lake or a bay. He may have been attracted by its shining luster and tasted it. He found that it had a tart, zesty, distinctive flavor and perhaps chewing a large piece, became ill. However, by experimentation he soon learned that taken in the proper proportions salt was a very pleasant additive to his food. He may have noticed, too, that it increased his feeling of well-being. Thus, when the curtain of recorded history rises, we find man using salt for his health's sake, seasoning his food with it, feeding it to his animals, and using it in many superstitious and religious ceremonies. These uses, however, are a far cry from the uses for salt today. The first attempts of white man to make salt in continental United States were reported in the year 1614, while the first commercial production was in 1753 from the Kanawha licks. Practically all this salt was for human consumption, preserving food, and curing hides. Prior to the coming of the white man, Indians are known to have made salt from salt springs such as those that existed at Avery Island, LA, Charleston, WV, Saltville, VA, and Onondaga, NY. In 1862 the first rock salt was mined in the US from the Avery Island salt dome. Almost immediately thereafter, rock salt was mined at Saltville, VA and then at Retsof, NY in 1885. Of the more than 39 million tons produced annually in the United States, about 58% or 23 million tons are consumed by the chemical industry in the production of chlorine, caustic soda, hydrochloric acid, sodium metal, and some 30 other basic chemicals. These basic chemicals, in turn, are used in the preparation of approximately 14,000 chemicals which range from soap and detergents, to such chlorinated hydrocarbons as DDT, BHC, carbon tetrachloride, etc. Utilization of cavities created in salt beds and domes has grown rapidly since 1947 until now the waste salt is creating an ecological problem. The uses for both dry- and solution-mined cavities range from the storage of liquid hydrocarbons to containerized storage of toxic wastes, from compressed air for the peak shaving of power to storage of nuclear wastes. Geology Mineralogy Properties: Because of its simple structure, halite, the mineralogical name for salt, was the first structure to be analyzed by X-rays. THE effect of tempering temperature and time upon the properties of quenched steel is clearly a subject of great practical importance, as well as of considerable theoretical interest. It would be very desirable to be able to predict the properties of a quenched steel when given any selected tempering cycle, with a minimum of experimental work upon that heat or even type of steel. Two problems are involved: one consists of relating the structure obtained to the physical properties, and will not be discussed here; the other, with which this paper deals, involves the relations of time, temperature and composition with the structure obtained on tempering. Indentation hardness is perhaps the most convenient quantitative measure of the tempered structure, or of what might be called the "degree of tempering." Undoubtedly, it is not an exact measure, and in some cases (as when temper-brittleness occurs) pieces of the same quenched and tempered steel may have widely differing properties at the same hardness. However, hardness has the advantage of being simple to determine and is certainly the most widely used indication of the degree of tempering. Moreover, for fully quenched steels that are not temper-brittle and do not contain retained austenite when quenched, it appears that, in general, if the hardness of the steel is the same, the tensile and impact properties will also be identical, whether a high or a low tempering temperature is used. The tempering charts available in the metallurgical literature usually give the hardness as a function of tempering temperature for only one tempering time. However, in practice, tempering times frequently vary, and a method of converting tempering curves for one time to tempering curves for some other time would be very valuable. It is also advantageous, in determining the tempering treatment necessary for a given part, not to have to temper samples at several temperatures for the time used for the commercial tempering operation. A more satisfactory procedure would be to employ times of the order of 10 to 30 min., rather than 5 or 10 hr., and if possible to use only one temperature. Furthermore, it is frequently desirable, for reasons such as temper-brittleness,* to obtain a given hardness with short times at relatively high temperatures, and it would be convenient to be able to compute without tests the time required to produce this hardness. (communication to the Secretary*):—Doubtless all engineers who have paid more than a casual visit to Russia have come into contact with that formidable document, the " smieta," or estimate of the Russian manager. It is an institution which seems to be inseparable from Russian mining-methods. As Mr. Shockley points out, the year's costs a agree very closely" with the figures of the smieta made at the beginning of the year. In cases which have come under my notice, I have been satisfied that there had been a good deal of " rigging" of accounts to this end. The sum spent by the manager was carefully kept down to the total of the estimate, because it was well known that no more money would be forthcoming, and when this is done it is not a difficult matter to see that the right amounts come under the right heads in the final accounts. I do not say that this is always the case, but I have come across notable instances. Looking at it from the Russian owner's point of view, I think that the balance of the argument is usually in favor of the smieta as limiting " impulsive indiscretion" on the part of managers. The Russian Mining Code of to-day leaves much to be desired, but this is thoroughly appreciated by the official world there, and great changes are spoken of for the future. In many, if not in most, cases the laws are interpreted liberally, and a great deal is left to the discretion of the district mining engineer or inspector, with whom it is necessary to keep in close touch. As Mr. Shockley points out, the officials of a mine, who are always Russians, are held personally responsible for accidents resulting to employees, quite independently of any compensation which may be made to the sufferer. THE Charleston Section of the A. I. M. E. held a joint meeting with the National Coal Association and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers on May 6 and 7, at which 94 members and guests were registered. Mechanical operation of coal mines was the subject discussed. First on the program was a paper entitled "Rock Dusting in the Coal Mines of West Virginia," by R. M. Lambie, chief of the Department of Mines, and Gordon MacVean. It appears in full in the current issue of MINING AND METALLURGY, p. 290. J. E. Jones of the Old Ben Coal Corp. opened this discussion by describing the method of rock dusting employed in the mines of that company, giving many interesting details, incidentally referring to the use of rock dust in fighting mine fires. He described one case where a number of troughs was brought to within 150 ft. of the fire, and rock dust had been thrown in its direction. After each trough had been thrown the party advanced a few feet, where another trough was discharged. About 10 ft. were gained on each advance, until the party found they had advanced completely over the fire.

Edward Halse, Puerto Berrio, Colombia, So. Amer. (communication to the Secretary*): The Taviche mining-district is generally known as " Taviches," being named from the two villages called respectively San Pedro Taviche and San Jero-nimo Taviche. It is so called by Jose G. Aguilera, in his paper on the Geographical and Geological Distribution of the Mineral Deposits of Mexico;' and in published reports by the late N. W. Rudston Read ;2 and by Juan de Dios Villarello3 The region is a large one, measuring about 24 miles long and 7 miles wide. Dr. Chance, in his interesting paper, tells us very little about the nature of the ores, and, with regard to the geology of the district, contents himself with observing that " the country, as a rule, consists of eruptive rocks; and no evidences of sedimentary strata appear near the mines." J. J. MCLELLAN, Webb City, Mo.-The Media mill, at the time it was built, was the largest mill that had been designed in the Joplin district. It was put up in a hurry, to take advantage of the high prices for zinc ore in 1915, by the owners of an adjacent plant, which had been very profitable. They owned a compound Corliss engine, and to take advantage of a single-unit drive it was necessary to build the mill in the form chosen, which involved making the hopper feed directly through the breakers and rolls, the undersize from the screen passing at once to the jigs, the oversize going through the rolls and returning to the original trommels. The mill was built in fairly good proportion; crushing was done by jaw breakers, Webb City pattern,' and three sets of 42-in. (106.7-cm.) Cornish rolls for reducing the oversize. The jigs were larger than the usual practice. The roughers were two six-cell jigs, with 42 by 48-in. cells. The cleaner jig was the largest ever constructed in the district up to that time, having seven 36 by 48-in. cells, for treating the rougher jigs. There was also a chat rougher. "Smittem," as used in our district, is the partly concentrated product from the rougher, which is finished on the cleaner jigs. "Chats" are the middlings proper, that is, they are the grains of chert with included particles of sulphide; the very low-grade smittem is sometimes included among the chats. When drawing chats from a jig, we also draw about ten times greater quantity of barren chert in order to insure complete recovery of mineral. This mixture of middlings and tailings is taken to a set of 30-in. rolls, the crushed product then going to a chat rougher, a comparatively small jig, with 26 by 36-in. cells. The principal departure of the Media mill from the usual practice was to build a hopper sufficiently high to give gravity feed to the jigs, without using elevators. The sludge plant, for table treatment of sand and slime, also contained several innovations in the manner of distributing the feed. The tables were arranged in two rows and the feed ran around the outside in a launder having two or three cone classifiers

Using X-ray pole-figure information and the single-crystal elastic constants, the angular variation of an elastic modulus in a polycrystal can be calculated and compared to measured clalues. This procedure has been used in the past to provide supporting ecidence for a particular choice of ideal orientations in the description o the X-ray pole figure. Since it is well-known that the absolute value oj an elastic modlus oj a poly crystal cannot be acczrralely calculated from the single-crystal elastic constants, there exists a serious question about the reliability oj this modulus method in the study of textures. The vesults show that, although the absolute isallre oj Young's modulus depends strongly on the assumptions made, the shape of the modulus vs angle curve is not very sensitive to the assumptions and thus can be used reliably in texture studies. Exatzples oj' using this criteriotz are illustrated in the text. NeARLY all poly crystalline materials have some preferred orientation in the arrangement of their grains and hence exhibit anisotropy in their properties. This preferred orientation is usually measured and studied by X-rays which yield detailed information on the statistical distribution of grain orientations in the form of pole figures. The usefulness of these pole figures in theories of texture formation and in predictions of properties has come to depend almost entirely on the characterization of the pole figure by one or more ideal orientations. Unfortunately, this characterization is not unique and different authors often present different ideal orientations to characterize a given pole figure. In order to distinguish between these different choices of ideal orientations, it is necessary to go beyond X-rays and consider other physical properties which reflect the texture' simply because any choice of ideal orientations must predict correctly the observed anisotropy in all physical properties. The most common example of this procedure has made use of the angular variation of Young's modulus with respect to the rolling direction in the plane of a rolled sheet.3 4 Here the anisotropy can be measured easily and it can also be calculated from the single-crystal elastic constants and the chosen ideal orientation. Unfortunately the methods used to calculate this anisotropy were chosen for their simplicity rather than for their mathematical rigor so that there exists a serious question as to the validity of conclusions reached by this modulus method. It is well-known5 that the absolute value of the Young's modulus of a polycrystalline aggregate cannot be calculated very accurately because different mathematical averages over the grains yield different results. It is one purpose of this paper to examine the effect of different averaging procedures on the calculated anisotropy of Young's modulus in the rolling plane of rolled sheets in order to see if this property can be used reliably in texture studies. This particular modulus and type of material were chosen because the modulus is easily measured and rolled sheet is technologically important. The results show that, although different averages yield different absolute values for Young's modulus, the shape of the modulus vs angle curve is not very sensitive to the averaging procedure and thus can be used as a criterion to check the various ideal orientations used to characterize the X-ray pole figure. Examples of this checking procedure are given in the final section. Another purpose of this paper is to examine the possibility of using the anisotropy of Young's modulus as an indicator of texture without reference to pole figures or ideal orientations. Such a use would require that different textures yield quite different shapes for the modulus vs angle curve so that the distinction between textures would be quite clear. The experimental results presented in the final section indicate that there is easily enough variation in shapes to allow modulus measurements to be useful texture indicators, par-

Problems associated with deposition of titanium infused chloride baths using TiCl4 as a feed material are reviewed. A potentially workable cell design using Alumdum diaphragms is discussed. Problems inherent to diaphragm-type cells are emphasized and experiments described which led to the development of a cell without a diaphragm. INVESTIGATORS assigned the problem of developing a commercial electrolytic process for making titanium metal have found that they are faced with the difficulty of overtaking rapidly improving magnesium and -sodium reduction processes. The ultimate goal must be a simple process that can be conducted with low-cost raw materials in equipment that is inexpensive to build and operate. This paper deals with some work of a preliminary nature conducted by personnel of the Research Laboratories, National Lead Co., Titanium Division. Many others have reported on the general subject of depositing titanium from fused salt electrolytes. A partial bibliography is attached. PRIMARY CONCEPTS Anyone attempting to deposit titanium metal from fused chloride electrolytes using TiC14 as a source material is faced with at least the following problems: 1) Getting the titanium into solution in the bath. 2) Controlling oxidation and reduction reactions associated with multiple valency of titanium, which result in low electrical efficiency. a) Prevention of dichloride oxidizing to trichloride and trichloride to tetrachloride at the anode. b) Prevention of trichloride from being reduced only to dichloride at the cathode. 3) Prevention of metal formation away from the cathode thru disproportionation of titanium dichloride to satisfy the equilibrium. 3 TiCl2 == 2 TiCl3 Ti [I] 4) Protection of reduced chlorides in the bath from reaction with oxygen from the bath container or air. 5) Removing from the bath the deposited metal formed without allowing it to become contaminated with oxygen or nitrogen. 6) Selecting cell materials of construction which will not contaminate the metal product or cause cell inefficiencies. EARLY EXPERIMENTS The initial attempts made to electrodeposit titanium from fused chloride baths using TiCl4 as a source material indicated that TiCl4 was essentially insoluble in molten chlorides of alkali and alkaline earth metals. If, however, the TiCl4 was introduced close to a nickel cathode some metal could be formed and appreciable quantities of reduced chlorides would be present. These reduced chlorides reacted with any oxygen present in the atmosphere above the bath and would also diffuse quickly to the anode (graphite) where they would react with chlorine and be evolved as TiCl4. The net electrolytic efficiency of such a cell is essentially nil. The TiCl4 evolves from the anode at almost the same rate that it is introduced in the vicinity of the cathode although a small amount of titanium metal can be formed on the walls of the cathodic pipe. It becomes apparent from the operation of such a cell that: metal can be deposited on the cathode, although of small particle size and a nonadherent nature, and when reduced chlorides are present in the electrolyte, TiCl4 can be absorbed, probably by the following reactions: TiCl4 + TiC12 - 2 TiCl3 [21 2 TiCl3 + 2 faradays - 2 TiC12 + C12 [31 DIAPHRAGM CELLS These facts encouraged the development of cells containing diaphragms to prevent migration of reduced chlorides from the cathode area to the anode. THE material available for mineralogic study, consisted of drill cores, 2 to 3 in. thick, supplemented by small well cuttings. Such study has added no essential new information regarding the minerals, though the refractive indices, used for determinative purposes, have been determined more accurately than before, permitting the development of a scheme for the rapid identification of these minerals. The essential points brought out by the investigation are two: (1) that certain mineral associations evidently point the way to an understanding of the geologic history and (2) that a definite sequence of mineral formation has taken place so that the original minerals formed have been in part-reacted on producing new compounds and associations; Twenty minerals have been found. INCREASING realization that pouring and ingot-mold practices involve many factors of fundamental importance to ingot quality and general steel-mill operations has caused these phases of steelmaking to become major concerns of operators and metallurgists engaged in control of quality and costs. Methods of pouring steel from the ladle into the ingot molds have some direct effects on ingot quality. The mold itself governs solidification and dimensions of the ingot and in so doing exerts some very tangible influences not only on ingot quality but also on product yields and general steel-mill processing. In addition, practices are employed in the handling of molds during daily open-hearth operations that are important to quality and production costs. Therefore, pouring and mold practices must be considered highly specialized and important steps in steel-mill operations. MOLD DESIGN Mold design is difficult to discuss in a precise manner because it varies greatly throughout the industry, both in theoretical concepts and practical application, and few well developed data are available. Most ingot molds are designed to meet conditions peculiar to a given plant wherein quality standards are dictated by end-use requirements, which may differ considerably even for the same grade of steel. The mold designer must also consider the equipment available to process ingots and the product obtained from them. Such equipment, used for stripping, heating, blooming and finishing operations, is seldom, if ever, exactly the same in any two steel plants. Thus, pronounced contrasts in mold designs can be expected to continue, even among plants making strictly comparable types of product, particularly because some producers are just beginning to realize the benefits possible from specialized designs. The Alabama flake-graphite industry has flourished only in times of war when importations of foreign graphite for crucible use have been greatly curtailed or cut off. World War I was a boom period and in 1918 some 30 plants produced 7,795,475 Ib. of flake graphite. The industry languished following the war and no graphite was produced from 1929 to 1939. The Federal Bureau of Mines began investigating the Alabama graphite deposits in 1940 and worked out modern recovery methods that were applied to production during part of World War 11. A prospecting program disclosed reserves of over 25 million tons of graphtic schists. In 1942 the War Production Board authorized the enlargement of the only plant then producing flake graphite and the construction of two new plants. Production of flake graphite from these three plants in 1943 is estimated at 8,100,000 lb. Increased imports from Madagascar late in 1943 shut down one of the new plants and curtailed production at the other. Alabama flake graphite has not yet been able to compete with Madagascar graphite for use in the manufacture of any but small graphite crucibles. The future of the industry must depend on meeting the higher carbon content demanded for other uses. Introduction The flake-graphite deposits of Alabama are confined to a narrow belt extending for about 60 miles southwest from the northeast corner of Clay County across Coosa County to the edge of the Coastal Plain in Chilton County (Fig. I). The continuity of the beds is broken by a 10-mile gap between Millerville in Clay County and Goodwater in Coosa County. The Clay County beds extend about 27 miles northwest of this gap, with a width of 3 to 4 miles near Millerville and of less than a mile at the northeast end. The Coosa-Chilton are? is about 33 miles long with a fairly consistent width of 2 to 3 miles. Geologically the graphite belt lies near the northeast boundary of the outcrop of metamorphic rocks of the Ashland series, a complex group of intensely folded and faulted beds of pre-Cambrian age composed mostly of quartz-mica schist, in which the mica is predominantly muscovite; garnet-mica schist, in which biotite is more common; and hornblende schist. Flake graphite is found in commercial quantities only in the quartz-mica schist. The best graphite, both in quantity and quality, is found in schist cut by numerous small pegmatite stringers along the planes of the schistosity. The pegmatites themselves contain little graphite, but the adjacent country rock is normally rich. . The schist was derived through the recrystallization of shale during the intrusion of the pegmatites, the graphite being derived from amorphous carbon in the shale. The intrusion of the pegmatites, and therefore the size and quantity .of the graphite flakes, seems to have a structural control.
