THERE are many who know The Lucky Tiger and will remember the 35-mile road from Esqueda, a station on The Nacozari Railroad in northern Sonora, Mexico. They will remember the box canyons of the Agua Caliente Mountains which are scarcely wide enough for two cars to pass; the Bavispe River which one hour may be a lazy trickle and the next a sweeping torrent, and the tortuous road up Tigre and Espuela canyons, now following the wash, now hugging some gigantic red cliff. It is still the same. From camp the view of the distant blue-gray mountains is the same. But one thing a visitor of a former day might miss: The hundreds of pack mules and burros, loaded with concentrates from the mill, which used to take most of the road and show up at the most inopportune places, have almost disappeared, replaced of course by the auto truck.

To alleviate pollution more restrictive legislation is being enacted, either limiting emission of pollutants or the type of fuel that can be utilized. The nature and magnitude of air pollution problems affecting the mining, preparation, coking and combustion of coal are described. Methods for combatting particulate emissions by use of mechanical separators and electrostatic pre-cipitors are discussed. Proposed methods to meet the problem of gaseous emissions currently receiving considerable attention are described, with special emphasis on methods to decrease pollution by sulfur oxides. Concern about air pollution goes back several centuries, but until very recently most effort has been aimed at coal smoke and other visible pollutants. The classic example of a 'successful' campaign for smoke abatement and control is the fruitful combined effort of the city of Pittsburgh and its surrounding Allegheny County, which eventually led to the reconstruction of downtown Pittsburgh at an estimated cost of one billion dollars. Historically, the city's downtown Golden Triangle district had been afflicted by pollutants evolving from steel mills, from a variety of other industries, and from railroad locomotives. Efforts to alleviate the situation prior to 1943 were virtually ineffective. In 1945, however, a comprehensive redevelopment plan was prepared and backed by state authority. Within a few years a clean, modern metropolis has evolved where once stood America's famous 'smoky city.' But the victory in Pittsburgh, as in various other American cities, has not solved the national problem. Current estimates indicate that 133 million tons annually of air pollutants from all sources still are emitted annually into the atmosphere above the United States. About 10% of this annual effluent is particulate matter so that most of the remaining pollution problems will be solved only when other effluents are reduced. Essentially, these are sulfur oxides, nitro- gen oxides, hydrocarbons, and carbon monoxide. Over the years, both states and local communities have tended to increase the restrictions on smoke and fly ash — problems mostly of concern in the combustion of coal. Prior to the middle 1950's, ordinances sometimes permitted emissions of smoke equivalent to as much as No. 3 on the Ringlemann scale. Since 1956, no ordinance has been passed which allows smoke of greater than No. 2. Under today's conditions of improved fuels, equipment and practice, a few communities have passed laws prohibiting emission of smoke of any density darker than Ringlemann No. 1. The majority of existing laws on fly ash emission in the U.S. limit emissions equivalent to 0.85 lb of fly ash per 1000 Ib of flue gas. In recent years, however, regulations which have been adopted give cognizance to the higher level of performance now obtainable with improved equipment. A comparison of the restrictions of five codes adopted since 1960 is given in Table I. The most stringent of these is the one for New York City which provides for a maximum emission of 0.6 lb fly ash per million Btu heat release (equivalent to roughly 0.51 lb/1000 lb of flue gas). The first comprehensive effort to restrict the emission of SO2 resulted from the passage of a 1937 law in St. Louis. This regulation stipulated that coal containing in excess of 23% volatile matter and 2% sulfur must be washed, thereby presumably producing some effective reduction in the input sulfur content. This was followed in 1949 by a Los Angeles County law which prohibited the emission of SO2 in concentrations greater than 0.2%. Most SO2-restrictive legislation passed since that date has been based on this limiting 0.2% SO2 by volume, although modifications are occasionally permitted under selected conditions, sometimes based on the fact that certain limiting ground concentrations are not exceeded — such as in the rules adopted by the San Francisco Bay area. To date, no legislation has been passed in the U.S. to limit the generation of nitrogen oxides from the combustion of fossil fuels. However, such oxides are considered to be of potential importance in air pollution control because of their possible detrimental effects on health and their reported role in the formation of photochemical smog. Interest in reducing oxides of nitrogen from powerplant and auto exhausts is increasing and regulations limiting their quantity can be expected in the future.

AMONG the curious results of the recent advance of prices in the iron trade of the United States, one of them at least is to be regarded as of great importance. I allude to the utilization of mill cinder as a cheap and almost costless substitute for high-priced iron ores in many blast furnaces, situated within easy reach of such raw material. It has been, with but few exceptions, the practice in this country, based upon tradition rather than upon authority or European precedents, to waste this material on 'account of its high proportion of silicic and phosphoric acids, although known to contain more iron than most ores, and although also known to be sometimes applied to the blast furnace in greater or less quantities without serious detriment to the iron for specific purposes. While in use to a limited extent in the Hocking Valley and Hanging Rock iron regions of Ohio for several years, its use in Western Pennsylvania has only become general of late, under the exigencies of high prices and a short supply of ore. Especially has mill cinder largely entered into the stock of furnaces attached to rolling mills in and about Pittsburgh. Under such circumstances the cinder pig has been paddled on the premises, and the malleable iron produced has been unexpectedly good. Cautiously as at first mill cinder has been applied, it is evident that the temptation to use it freely is a strong one whenever the commercial rates for high-class ores are out of proportion to the general conditions of the iron trade, as sometimes happens in this country, especially as the free use of it is apparently justified by the quality of the iron produced from this cheap and abundant material. Indeed the consumption of cinder pig has., not been wholly confined to mills using up the production of furnaces belonging to the same plant. One furnace at least on the Ohio, at Covington, for several' months has been making foundry pig from "all cinder." The iron has gone into the general trade. UNDER the names of Conservation, Social Justice, the New Nationalism, and Progressive Democracy, many earnest reformers are calling for a new system of Federal government to replace the one which they ascribe to our fathers, and declare to have been outgrown. They are proposing the lease by the United States of certain natural resources on the public domain, for the profit of the U. S. Treasury, instead of the sale of such resources to private citizens or associations of citizens. In the present paper, I shall try to show that this notion is neither new nor good. It is clear that the United States is owner, as well as sovereign, of public lands acquired through conquest or purchase from other nations, as it was owner of the public lands expressly ceded to it by the original thirteen States. Its policy with regard to such lands involves, therefore, two entirely distinct questions: What shall it do as owner ? and, What shall it do as sovereign ? The latter question, it must be confessed, has played but a small part in our history. All the prerogatives of sovereignty which were not explicitly conferred upon the Federal government by the original States were retained by them. The ownership or control of precious or other metals or minerals in the earth, for instance, was thus reserved to the several sovereign States. New York, South Carolina, and other States have passed laws on this subject, without regard to Federal authority. As new States have been successively admitted to the Union, the tacitly accepted theory has been,. that they thereby acquired all the reserved rights of the original States. These newer States largely outnumber the first. thirteen; and it is inconceivable that they would submit to any deprivation of sovereignty based on historical grounds. The preparation of massive uranium metal containing very low concentrations of a number of light elements by bomb reduction of UF4, with calcium is described. Details of procedures are given for preparing high-purity ingredients for the bomb reduction. The as-reduced uranium metal contained, on the average, less than the following amounts of light element impurities, in ppm: Li, 0.1; Be, 0.1; B, 0.1; C, 25; 0, 70; Na, 1; Mg, 3; Al, 2; and Si, 7. Other impurities for which the metal was examined averaged, in ppm: Ca, < 10; V, < 10; Cr, 2; Mn, 6; Fe, 50; Co, < 5; Ni, 8; and Cu, 1. THE preparation of very high-purity uranium metal in massive form for research purposes is of great importance. Recently the kilogram-scale preparation of uranium metal containing less than 70 ppm of detected impurities was accomplished by Blumen-thal and coworkers by vacuum remelting of high-purity crystals of uranium obtained by fused salt electrolysis.1"3 Albert and coworkers4 have reported successful experiments in lowering the concentrations of certain impurity elements in uranium, notably iron, to a few ppm by the zone-melting method. The present paper describes the preparation of high-purity massive uranium metal by the bomb reduction of UF4, with calcium. Early in 1951 a program was undertaken at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory to prepare uranium metal of very high purity with respect to a number of the light elements. The methods considered for this purpose were 1) bomb reduction of a uranium halide with calcium, 2) electrolysis of fused salts, and 3) hot wire decomposition of UI4, The first of these processes had been used extensively at Los Alamos since 1943 (and still is used) for the production of uranium metal.5 In considering the three processes it was evident that either of the last two would require an extensive development program with no certainty of success. On the other hand, a study of available data showed that uranium metal of very high purity with respect to some light elements had occasionally been made in routine processing by the first method. It was therefore decided that an intensive study of the bomb-reduction process would be made to see if it could be improved to yield uranium metal with very low concentrations of light elements. DEVELOPMENT OF PROCEDURES The bomb-reduction process used at Los Alamos consists of reducing UF4 with calcium, using iodine as a booster. The reaction is carried out in a magnesium-oxide crucible enclosed in a steel bomb. Argon is used in the bomb to avoid objectionable side reactions which would occur in the presence of air. All ingredients for this bomb-reduction process were examined as possible sources of light elements. It was known that high-purity UF4 was required. The calcium used in the reductions was a source of carbon and magnesium. The magnesium-oxide crucibles were sources of boron, silicon, and magnesium. The iodine did not appear to be a source of any impurities. Pure UF4- The UF4 for bomb reduction is prepared from U3O3 , by successive reduction to UO2, with hydrogen and hydrofluorination of the UO2, with anhydrous HF. Since it was known that no impurities were normally introduced during the gas-solid reactions, effort was directed toward the preparation of high-purity U3O3. Of the many possible procedures for the purification of uranium solutions the following were investigated: 1) Precipitation of uranium peroxide. (Two procedures were tried. The first consisted of simultaneously adding hydrogen-peroxide and ammonium-hydroxide solutions to a uranyl-nitrate solution, containing citric and malonic acids, at such relative rates that precipitation was carried out at a constant pH of 1.5 The second consisted of simultaneously adding uranyl-nitrate, ammonium-hydroxide, and hydrogen-peroxide solutions to an aqueous solution

Uniquely colored, thin-bedded quartzite is quarried between Crossville and Crab Orchard in Cumberland County, Tenn. It is produced in all sizes up to the limits of transportation from beds usually ranging in thickness from less than 1/2 in. to 6 in. The stone is very resistant to wear and weathering and is marketed throughout the country for many different purposes in exterior and interior construction. The annual production exceeds 36,000 tons, valued at nearly $1,000,000.

ONE time or another placer mining attracts the attention of a large number of people, because of the possible low initial investment, low operating cost, and quick returns. Much has been said about sampling and operating placer deposits but many are still inclined to jump at a property without giving much, if any, consideration to proper sampling. This statement does not apply to experienced mining engineers but I am hoping that readers will tear out this article and pass it along where it will do the most good and thus help to preserve the reputation of legitimate mining. It would appear that some people have an ability to sink test pits in high-grade gravel that is positively uncanny. AN enthusiastic crowd, cheerfully confident that the upturn in the oil industry has arrived, gathered in Los Angeles on Sept. 29 for a Petroleum Division meeting arranged by the Southern California Section. The assembly room of the California Oil and Gas Association was the place of meeting. H. Norton Johnson was in the chair for the morning session, with about eighty members and guests present. Four papers were presented before lunch and a fifth, on electrical coring, was withdrawn as the work on which it was based is still confidential. Joseph Jensen read his contribution on the "Kettleman Hills Middle Dome Unit Plan" and, as he had an active part in framing the plan, his outline and discussion of it was authoritative and informing. J. H. Woods asked concerning the operation of the casing-head gasolene plant under the plan and was informed that one company would operate the plant and royalties would be paid participating companies

Successful blast-furnace operation depends upon securing an optimum balance between a number of important variables. This balance will vary somewhat from furnace to furnace in the same plant and with raw materials available in different plants. It is difficult to isolate the effect of any one variable unless it has a rather pronounced effect upon the efficiency of operation. The physical properties of iron ore and coke are known to affect the process, yet it is difficult to set up any definite yardstick by which these differences can be appraised. In recent years, whenever practicable, operators have taken steps to obtain better control over the absolute size and uniformity of size of the ore and coke. The size and physical character of the stone, however, have received comparatively little attention, emphasis being placed upon chemical composition, fluxing efficiency, and action as a desulphurizing agent. Since the stone occupies only about 10 per cent of the volume of the stock column, its influence upon permeability is less than that of the ore and the coke. The large pieces now used have a tendency to roll to the center and thus increase the permeability of this part of the stock column. Smaller pieces would be more effective in promoting the permeability of denser portions of the stock. The size and physical properties of blastfurnace stone are important also for reasons best understood by considering the results obtained by the crushing and the sizing of iron ore. Crushing ore to about 2 in. at Provo, Utah, and to about I in. in Alabama produced material somewhat less permeable to gases, even though sized. In spite of some sacrifice in permeability, the efficiency of the process was improved by crushing and sizing the ore, as indicated by a substantial saving in fuel and increased output. This saving in fuel is due in large measure to more thorough reduction of ore in the upper part of the furnace and to a corresponding decrease in the amount of carbon consumed prematurely above the tuyeres by the reaction CO2 + C = 2CO - 70,080 B.t.u. [I] The physical properties of stone, its size and rate of calcination are important because they influence the rate at which CO2 is released and the completeness of calcination before reaching a level in the furnace where the temperature does not exceed 1050°C. (1920°F.). Briefly, carbon dioxide from the limestone or from the reduction of ore may cause premature corn bustion of carbon above the tuyeres. Assuming that 1000 Ib. of limestone is used per ton of pig iron, about 435 Ib. of CO2 will be liberated during calcination of a good grade of stone. GROWING use of basic slag in the agricultural industry is of special interest and importance to the iron and steel industry of the Birmingham district, providing an increasing outlet for this by- product. Such use of basic slag was first developed in England about fifty years ago where it soon became wide- spread. About twenty years ago the Tennessee Coal, Iron & R. R. Co. began its production in the United States after exhaustive tests had demonstrated its high value here as in Eng- land. It is particularly valuable on heavy clay and acid soils, improving their physical condition, increasing their alkalinity where that is desirable, and providing soluble phosphate and small amounts of manganese to soils deficient in these respects. Its use in agriculture is growing as its advantages are becoming more widely known.

Introduction This papers describes some of the latest improvements that have been incorporated or planned by the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. to reduce operating costs and improve pellet quality. The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. operates and manages mining, beneficiation, and pelletizing operations in Michigan, Canada, and western Australia. This paper deals with the grate-kiln pelletizing operations at Republic, Humboldt, Tilden, Empire, and Pioneer in Michigan, and the Adams and Sherman in Ontario, Canada. Table I characterizes each operation in regard to location, ore type, pellet capacity and date that pellets were first produced. All of the operations with the exception of Pioneer and Tilden, utilize downdraft-two-pass grate cycles of drying followed by preheating. Pioneer utilizes an all-downdraft, three-pass grate cycle which consists of three drying zones followed by the preheat zone. The Pioneer and Tilden cycles have been described previously (Lindroos and Koski, 1966; Villar and Dawe, 1975; Koski, 1977). Tilden utilizes a three-pass grate cycle with a stage of updraft drying, followed by two downdraft drying stages. Recuperation systems which supply hot gases to a drying zone from second stage cooling were designed and fur¬nished for Tilden I. Tilden II will be identical. Empire IV will also be furnished with a recuperation system. The Adams grate¬kiln system was retrofitted with a recuperation system. This paper will summarize some of the efforts that are in effect or planned for grate-kiln pelletizing systems to: (1) reduce operating and maintenance costs, (2) reduce energy requirements, (3) improve product quality, and (4) meet environmental standards.

As one surveys the extensive taconite operations on the Mesabi Range, he may find it difficult to believe that only 15 years ago, the iron ore mining industry here was staring at its own imminent demise. Due to the high demands for iron ore during World War II the postwar period of 1946-1950, and the subsequent "police action" in Korea, there was rapid consumption of the Mesabi&apos;s already depleted ores, and some economists were giving the Range only 20-25 years of life. In the 13-year period 1941-1953, more than 850 million tons of iron ore were shipped to steel mills, an amount almost equal to the total production during the preceding 30 years. Proven ore reserves dropped from 1.1 billion tons in 1940 to 8.3 million tons in 1954, the largest decrease being recorded in the famed direct shipping ores.

Introduction. THE Georgetown mining district is located in Deerlodge county, Mont., about 20 miles west of Anaconda. It lies along the divide between the headwaters of Warm Springs creek, draining eastward, and Flint creek, flowing west and north through the Philipsburg valley. The actual divide is formed by Cable mountain, a narrow ridge running north and south, terminating to the south in low hills overlooking Georgetown lake, and to the north in a high, rugged plateau that falls off to the west to the wide valley of Flint creek. Oil the eastern, or Warm Springs, slope of Cable mountain is the Cable mine, with the Hidden Lake mine a few miles north. On the western slope is the Southern Cross group, with smaller mines, the Twilight, Cincinnati, Red Lion, and Big Bill, at intervals to the northward. The Georgetown mines lie in the hills south of Cable mountain; the Philipsburg mines, of which the Granite Mountain, Bimetallic, Hope, and Trout are the chief, form a separate group to the north, overlooking Flint Creek valley and Philipsburg. (See Fig. 1.1) The region ranges in elevation from 5,000 to 9,000 ft. It is, with the exception of the lower valleys, well timbered with small fir and pine, although Cable mountain and the higher summits to the northward rise slightly above timber line. The main valleys have the smooth contours of glaciation, and their mouths are frequently choked with morainal deposits.

IT is generally assumed that in most metals and alloys a given tensile stress produces a given deformation irrespective of the length of time during which the stress is applied. This assumption is justified in most of the important engineering applications of metallic materials; however, in the case of some metals and alloys used or tested at temperatures over or slightly under that at which recrystallization can occur the assumption is not warranted.1 This paper deals with the variations of deformation produced by a constant tensile stress acting for varied lengths of time in the special case of thin aluminum alloy sheet of the duralumin type, which had been subjected to different thermal and mechanical treatments. The material investigated was in the form of a sheet approximately 0.002 in. thick, which had been cold-rolled from a thickness of 0.020 in. It has been found that at a sufficiently high constant tension such material deforms continuously with the elapse of time and that the rate at which this deformation occurs is greatly influenced by the previous thermal and mechanical treatments.

It is indeed a pleasure for me to have this opportunity to discuss with you a subject which I find infinitely interesting and intriguing - namely, world-wide iron ore supply and demand. We will be examining the following: (i) current iron ore production and requirements; (ii) the major ore producing countries; (iii) the seaborne iron ore trade; (iv) ore grades or types; and (v) future requirements. For those who may not be familiar with the iron ore mining industry, it may be useful to know at the outset that our industry has been plagued with overcapacity for the past seven years. The optimism which prompted substantial expansion of productive capacity in the early to mid-1970&apos;s has unfortunately proved to have been unfounded. I shall begin by describing where we are today as well as a little about how we got there. In the latter regard, it&apos;s not so much that historical knowledge will solve any of the industry&apos;s problems or provide clairvoyance with regard to the future. Rather it&apos;s a feeling on my part that some knowledge of the past will provide a useful perspective capable of enhancing our analysis of future trends. At the time of writing, the most recent year for which we have definitive world-wide iron ore production and consumption statistics is 1980. In that year the world consumed approximately 859 million metric tons of iron ore to produce approximately 510 million metric tons of primary iron consisting of 502 million tons of pig iron and 8 million tons of sponge iron. Crude steel production for the same period attained a level of 719 million metric tons. Because it is possible in today&apos;s world to produce steel without consuming iron ore simply by melting scrap, the key statistic insofar as iron ore demand is concerned is primary iron production. In 1980 the ratio of iron ore consumption to primary iron production was 1.68:1.00. The comparable ratio over the past seven years has varied from 1.63 to 1.87 and averaged 1.72:1.00. All the same, as a practical matter crude steel production and iron ore consumption tend to parallel one another closely, and for the time being a good rule of thumb is that to produce an average ton of crude steel requires 1.20 tons of iron ore. Let&apos;s turn our attention now to the regions where the 859 million tons of iron ore necessary to support 1980 world-wide iron and steel production were produced. Not surprisingly, most of the ore was produced in the same region where it was smelted. In round numbers 65% of the world&apos;s iron ore production is currently consumed in the same general region as it is produced, while 35% enters the seaborne trade and is transported in ocean vessels to a more remote consuming area. Approximately 85% of the world&apos;s seaborne iron ore trade is directed to the Western European and Japanese markets, both of which are almost entirely dependent on off-shore sources for their mammoth iron ore requirements. The following tabulation lists, in order, the twelve leading iron ore producing countries in 1980 as well as their percentages of total and free-world production; in addition their export potentials are presented. As a group these countries accounted in that year for 89% of world-wide production which stood at 871 million tons. Leading World Iron Ore Producing Countries [ ] One will first note that world iron ore production is dominated by the top four producers - namely, the U.S.S.R., Brazil, Australia and the U.S.A. - which together accounted for nearly 60% of total 1980 production. Of these four major producers the U.S.A. and the U.S.S.R. produce almost exclusively for consumption in their own regions, whereas Australia and Brazil produce primarily for the seaborne export trade. In fact Australia and Brazil accounted for about 50% of all seaborne iron ore trade in 1980! It is also interesting to note that Australia, Brazil, the U.S.A. and Canada accounted for nearly 60% of free world iron ore production in 1980. Once again the importance of Australia and Brazil shows itself, with their share alone of free world production reaching 35%. In making heating gas with anthracite coal for roasting ore during the past few years, I have tried many forms of gas generators. So far, the most successful and satisfactory one has been what we call a fluxing producer, which is simply a small cupola or blast furnace, in which we charge with the coal, say, 30 or 40 per cent. of basic blast-furnace cinder, to unite, when melted, with the ash or earthy matter in the coal, and carry it off as cinder. The producer we have in use at Chester, N. J., has more of the lines of a blast furnace than a cupola, the hearth being 24 inches diameter and 24 inches high. It then enlarges on an angle of about 25 degrees from a perpendicular to 4 feet, and then is drawn into 3 feet on top ; total height, 12 feet. We use one water coil-tuyere 12 inches above the bottom, and blow through a 1 1/2 - inch nozzle. The depth of coal above the tuyere averages about 6 feet. The producer-is blown with
